My rendition of Tuonenpoika, the guardian of the Finnish underworld, Tuonela; This gore-covered son of Tuoni fishes for unwanted visitors downstream, slaying them. He is said to collect the belongings of all the dead flowing down river Tuoni.

Ya know, I got tumblr because I saw people wizardposting and thought it was funny, and fun and cool and wizard majik and all that good stuff. So I went on to make an account as you do, but couldn’t think of an appropriate wizard based name, so kind of just went with something something wizard something alchemist stuff, and then picked the alchemist from Noita because, Noita is fucken awesome?

And so it has just occurred to me that there will most certainly be a Noita community on here, and I am ecstatic.

Anyway I am going to spend so much time making an alchemist character you have no idea, like not the alchemist from Noita or anything, don’t wanna disrespect the Kalevala or anything like that, literature like that seems pretty important to me, I will definitely be taking inspiration from it though, somewhat.

If anyone who sees this wants to pitch in any ideas for it I’ll absolutely take them into consideration, and maybe even tie the whole thing in with this semi-ironic extended universe thing me and a friend are doing.

Rewriting Ymver, the Eternal Bard — Part 1

So, Ymver was originally loosely inspired by Vainamoinen but, with the changes I've been making the Saegenfolk, obviously, their folk hero must change too.

See, the ways these stories work is that, hypothetically, everyone in the culture tells this story over and over. For a real life example, in the modern USA, we have this idea that we have to rebel against the oppressors -- like first, it was the British and then it was women's right to vote and then it was African American rights, etc. etc. American history is, by mainstream sources, a story of achieving our goals of freedom and equality. And naturally, the real world is far more complicated but the story is still there. But this shapes how US citizens see a lot of things -- like, growing up is sometimes seen as "gaining freedom from your parents" or making money is "gaining freedom to do what you want when you retire."

So, let's look at the stories that the Saegen folk are set up to tell, with their new culture:

Overcoming the cold

Trusting and not-defying the Gods

Defeating a lot of people in battle with wits rather than relying on physical strength

^ In light of that, using music and art and crafts to defeat enemies (this comes back to being a metaphor for overcoming the cold)

Perfecting yourself without tearing down the competition, raising others with you (this stands in stark contrast to Thuille, where it's more of a "Victory at Any Cost" mindset)

With all that in mind... let's start with his appearance, why not?

So to begin, he's gonna be less white and more "Northeast Asian" i.e. Manchurian, Mongolian, Yakutian, etc. Or possibly a selkie, which makes him darker skinned. Or maybe a coral selkie, which makes him pink and feylike?

And with the Saegen culture more focused on exceptional individualism, I'm thinking maybe writing him like a burnt out gifted kid. Like, when he was young, he was this incredible, perfect prodigy... and now he's like "What was all that 'trying to achieve perfection for'?"

And I've got this pseudo-father relationship between him and Arlasaire and I want to do something better with that, especially since she's also got a complicated father-daughter relationship with Diacaius...

Side tangent: I wanna incorporate elements of Eve's Fight Song animation from YouTube. If you aren't a weirdo, anime fan who goes and learns about musical artists of anime you like -- Fight Song is a Chainsaw Man ending and Eve, the artist, made a whole animation about a young man saving a younger girl from a fight ring or something and it's very very good. Highly-condensed visual storytelling. Big fan.

Other tangent: With my worldwide focus on Kings Under Mountains... China has its OWN variant of a King Under the Mountain (literally) with Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Although, his story is much less Jesus-like than Western stories, he is literally under a mountain for a bit. So it could be neat to incorporate some of those elements...

O: You’re quite a writer. You’ve a gift for language, you’re a deft hand at plotting, and your books seem to have an enormous amount of attention to detail put into them. You’re so good you could write anything. Why write fantasy?

Terry: I had a decent lunch, and I’m feeling quite amiable. That’s why you’re still alive. I think you’d have to explain to me why you’ve asked that question.

O: It’s a rather ghettoized genre.

Terry: This is true. I cannot speak for the US, where I merely sort of sell okay. But in the UK I think every book— I think I’ve done twenty in the series— since the fourth book, every one has been one the top ten national bestsellers, either as hardcover or paperback, and quite often as both. Twelve or thirteen have been number one. I’ve done six juveniles, all of those have nevertheless crossed over to the adult bestseller list. On one occasion I had the adult best seller, the paperback best-seller in a different title, and a third book on the juvenile bestseller list. Now tell me again that this is a ghettoized genre.

O: It’s certainly regarded as less than serious fiction.

Terry: (Sighs) Without a shadow of a doubt, the first fiction ever recounted was fantasy. Guys sitting around the campfire— Was it you who wrote the review? I thought I recognized it— Guys sitting around the campfire telling each other stories about the gods who made lightning, and stuff like that. They did not tell one another literary stories. They did not complain about difficulties of male menopause while being a junior lecturer on some midwestern college campus.

Fantasy is without a shadow of a doubt the ur-literature, the spring from which all other literature has flown. Up to a few hundred years ago no one would have disagreed with this, because most stories were, in some sense, fantasy. Back in the middle ages, people wouldn’t have thought twice about bringing in Death as a character who would have a role to play in the story. Echoes of this can be seen in Pilgrim’s Progress, for example, which hark back to a much earlier type of storytelling. The epic of Gilgamesh is one of the earliest works of literature, and by the standard we would apply now— a big muscular guys with swords and certain godlike connections— That’s fantasy. The national literature of Finland, the Kalevala. Beowulf in England. I cannot pronounce Bahaghvad-Gita but the Indian one, you know what I mean. The national literature, the one that underpins everything else, is by the standards that we apply now, a work of fantasy.

Now I don’t know what you’d consider the national literature of America, but if the words Moby Dick are inching their way towards this conversation, whatever else it was, it was also a work of fantasy. Fantasy is kind of a plasma in which other things can be carried. I don’t think this is a ghetto. This is, fantasy is, almost a sea in which other genres swim. Now it may be that there has developed in the last couple of hundred years a subset of fantasy which merely uses a different icongraphy, and that is, if you like, the serious literature, the Booker Prize contender. Fantasy can be serious literature. Fantasy has often been serious literature. You have to fairly dense to think that Gulliver’s Travels is only a story about a guy having a real fun time among big people and little people and horses and stuff like that. What the book was about was something else. Fantasy can carry quite a serious burden, and so can humor. So what you’re saying is, strip away the trolls and the dwarves and things and put everyone into modern dress, get them to agonize a bit, mention Virginia Woolf a few times, and there! Hey! I’ve got a serious novel. But you don’t actually have to do that.

The wild references to Finland in Honkai Star Rail

Hello, in this post I'm going to go over the various references to Finland in Honkai Star Rail (Also touching a little on HI3) and explaining them the best I can so that non-finns can understand how hilariously delightful they are.

Starting with a funny one: Welt Yang.

The man is canonically 1/2 finnish, 1/4th chinese and 1/4th german according to sources I dont understand.

The way this is represented in Honkai Star Rail comes in one intentional form and one that may be an accident but I love it anyway:

1.

Welt's given name is Joachim Nokianvirtanen, a name that is utterly hilarious to a finn like me. Why? Well Nokianvirtanen is not a surname anyone here would ever have. Virtanen is a real surname, but for some reason Mihoyo decided slap Nokia in the front of it??

The name translates to "Nokia's rapids." Which adds to the funniness because yes Nokia is an actual place in Finland and not just the brand, but it is also very much the brand.

(Also Joachim is not a finnish name even if many finns are christian.)

This is the equivalant of naming an american character Jesus McDonaldslake.

2.

Welt's hair colour! A lot of people imagine blond and blue eyes when imagining a finn, but that's not actually accurate to the statistics. The most common hair colour here is in fact "Maantien harmaa." Translating to country road grey. Sometimes they leave out the word grey or replace it with blond. The colour is known as dirty blond or pale brown in english speaking countries 👍 This is less funny and just a cute detail.

Secondly we'll be going over Sampo Koski, a man many know to have a very finnish name.

BUT FIRST Fun backround info: I didn't know Sampo was in this game when I first started playing, so when he showed up and suddenly dropped finnish words at me I was utterly jumpscared.

Finland is very rarely referenced in media outside of our country, so most of us are NOT used to hearing anything about our home in media.

Furthermore there's actually a meme about this very thing that everyone in the country knows: Torilla Tavataan. This translates to "Lets meet at the marketplace" which is referring to the idea that when something massively cool happens we should gather together and celebrate.

Anyway back to Sampo. His name is actually something I could totally see a real finn having, although his first name is a little out there.

Sampo is an item from finnish* mythology that was forged by a super capable smith with the help of his whole village. The item is golden with multiple spouts that produce valuable things like flour, gold and I believe... salt? You can find more about the item online.

Koski meanwhile means a river rapid. Uhm, lotsa water themed names here, huh!

Nothing that funny going on with his references to be honest. I can even say the voice actor did an amazing job pronouncing his name correctly.

Yunli's companion quest!

This is the newest batch of references I've ran into, but if I or anyone else finds more I'll be updating this list :]

In Yunli's companion quest we meet... Paavo. His name is Paavo--

This NPC introduces himself as a traveler from far away who's come to deliver a sword from his homeland back to the Xianzhou where it was originally forged. Here's why he made me giggle uncontrollably every moment he was on screen.

1.

Paavo is considered kind of a joke name, very comparable to naming someone Bob in america. The way NPC's referred to him sounded like "Mr. Bob" to me. It was so funny

2.

He is from the PLANET KALEVALA?? SAFlJ LJ ???

Kalevala is the national epic of Finland* and tells stories such as the one of Sampo's creation. The title does refer to setting of the story, but it is still weird to hear it as a name of a planet lol.

Paavo explains the sword he has come to deliver is called Miekka Kivessä. This is the finnish translations of "The sword in the stone." he proceeds to then explain the legend of the sword in the stone, which. It's not a finnish legend. We've never had a king, yet alone chosen them with a sword-- Not even in myths. Kalevala's highest ranking guy in the mortal realm is Väinämöinen who's an old wise man.

Also he says Miekka Kivessä wrong but that's to be expected, very funny, and also I admire the effort to at least try and make it sound natural.

5.

Finally, he later reveals his last name-- Which, why are we refering to him as Mr. Paavo if he has a last name...? Oh well! Mr. Paavo's last name is Kalastaja, which translates to Fisher. This is not a real last name in Finland. The english equivalent of this man's goddang name would be something like Mr. Bob Employee.

Since you've made it this far I assume you won't mind me rambling a bit more. I'm personally psyched to see Finland mentioned in non-finnish media and love the wonky but genuine attempts to include us!

I think considering how many weebs there are in Finland who've come up with illogical "Asian names" to sound cool online, it's only fair we got the same treatment back :P I hope they'll keep delivering and I'd love to visit planet Kalevala one day.

*It's worth noting Finland is a colonizer of the Sami people, and a lot of their culture has been annexed without any care or respect towards them.

Finland was also under colonialism itself for hundreds of years, and our myths have been largely lost to time with only some information left. It's super difficult to tell what is finnish mythology and whats the Sami people's mythology.

That's a fact that's deeply important to remember when discussing things like this, and I hope that the people reading this consider looking into how to help the indigenous people of the nordic region. Thank you.

Let me know which one of the characters of Kalevala you think you are

My theory on Sampo's true identity...

(Minor Spoilers for 2.4) (also, I’m no expert in… anything, really, but these are just my ramblings).

So, this has probably been mentioned before, but I have a teeny-tiny theory about Sampo’s true identity, and it relates to Finnish mythology.

So, “Sampo” in and of itself doesn’t have a set meaning, but it has its roots in Finnish mythology, particularly the “Kalevala” which is a 19th-century compilation of epic poetry. In it, a blacksmith god by the name of Seppo Ilmari(nen) forges the mythical device known as “The Sampo”. It’s never quite explained what The Sampo really is; some versions depict it as a mill, others as a cornucopia from which bountiful creations flow from, and some even have it as being a world tree/world pillar, so what The Sampo really is, isn’t entirely known. But, what is known, is that it brought riches and good fortune to its holder (again, the same as the cornucopia from Greek mythology).

But why am I mentioning all of this? Why bring up the Kalevala? It could be that Hoyo just chose the name “Sampo” for some flavour—befitting of a character who magics up relics from seemingly thin air and is trying to create riches—and yeah, it’s a possibility…

Until I saw these two screenshots from the 2.4 story:

You know what this means, right? 

Kalevala is a real planet in Hoyo’s Star Rail universe, and I find it awfully coincidental that they would use this name for a planet and not have it related to a certain blue haired conman, especially since The Sampo is such a pivotal element in the plot of the Kalevala—there is no way this is a coincidence (I refuse to believe it).

This leads me to believe that Kalevala is Sampo’s real home world, and is where he originates from.

Now, this is all well and good, knowing where “The Sampo” hails from, but I want to focus on its creator—Seppo Ilmari(nen)—and his parallels to a certain blue haired conman. For one, Ilmari(nen)’s name is quite interesting as the ‘Ilma’ part is Finnish for ‘air’ or ‘weather’, and as we know, Sampo’s element is that of ‘wind’ (And also the fact that Ilmari(nen) is credited as “Godlike smith-hero and creator of the sky”. I could go into a whole spiel about Ilmari(nen) and Qlipoth swinging their giant hammers in tandem together for all eternity (Go Sampard! Geppie is Qlipoth's true heir, you can't convince me otherwise!), but that’s for another conspiracy theory lol).

So, ‘Ilma’ means ‘air’, and Sampo wields ‘wind’.

Cool.

If the parallels ended there, I’d just say I was being crazy… but there’s more.

Sampo’s 4th (and arguably best) eidolon is called “The Deeper the Love, the Stronger the Hate”. Two out of his six eidolons refer to 'love', whilst the other 4 are to do with wealth and riches. The wealth and richest aspect leans towards The Sampo of mythology, whilst the ‘love’ aspect, well…

According to the story, Seppo Ilmari(nen) is the unluckiest bastard alive when it comes to love. Like, seriously. His whole storyline is that he can’t find a woman. For one, Seppo Ilmari(nen) is double crossed by his so called buddy, Väinämöinen, into creating The Sampo for the evil witch Louhi of Pohjola in exchange for her daughter’s hand in marriage (which, Ilmari didn’t even want in the beginning), but when the poor guy actually sees the daughter and falls in love with her (and subsequently creates the Sampo—after failing miserably a number of times, mind you—he creates a crossbow, a boat, a cow(wtf?) and a plough, all which are somehow either evil or flawed), she ups and just leaves him hanging! (in the original runes, however, he is successful in gaining a wife, as his ‘unlucky in love’ spiel was later added by Lönnrot in compiling the Kalevala).

As with any mythology and re-telling of it, there’s so many different versions of the same event. In “The Maiden of the North”, a 1898 opera written by Oskar Merikanto, both Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen compete for the chance to marry Louhi’s daughter, who is then mentioned as being “Ilmari(nen)’s first wife” and who later dies to Kullervo’s curse (apparently she was a bit of a bitch to Kullervo by taunting and tormenting the poor boy—who was a child slave mind you!). Distraught, Ilmari(nen) forges himself a wife of gold and silver, but he finds her to be too cold and callous—he forges her out of love but only finds hate—so he tries to gift her to Väinämöinen (who doesn’t want her either, lol), and suggests he cast her back into the furnace and to “forge from her a thousand trinkets”.

Here’s the accompanying poem:

Never, youths, however wretched,

Nor in future, upgrown heroes,

Whether you have large possessions,

Or are poor in your possessions,

In the course of all your lifetime,

While the golden moon is shining,

May you woo a golden woman,

Or distress yourselves for silver,

For the gleam of gold is freezing,

Only frost is breathed by silver.

It is apparently your standard Aesop’s fable of “money can’t buy happiness”, which is something else I see in our dear old Sampo Koski. During our time in Belobog, we see how different he acts with the Underworld and Overworlders. To the poor, he actually seems approachable (albeit a bit of a nuisance), going so far as to help the Underworlders (an example being the questline “Survival Wisdom” in which he and Peak set up a business together renting out his tools to help the miners make a decent wage to support their families). In contrast, we actively see Sampo being very hostile towards the Overworlders, scamming them and putting the nobles in their place or setting them up to be caught by the Silvermane Guards (an example being during the museum questline where you discover his identity as “Mr Cold Feet”. Sampo clearly states to who he thinks is his mark that ‘we are not friends’ in a very hostile manner, something which we’ve not seen from Sampo before as he is usually quite amicable). 

For all Sampo’s showboating and flashing his money around, he helps where it counts. He wants to make money, sure, but not at the detriment of the people who need it the most, only to those with excess.

Anyway, back to him being unlucky in love…

In another rune entitled “Kosinta”, Ilmari(nen) goes on a journey to compete for Hiisi’s daughter, and wins by completing various feats, one of them being “ploughing a field full of snakes”:

And as we know, Sampo is very heavy on the snake motifs (the head of the snake on his shoulders, the spine wrapped around him, the daggers are its fangs…etc.)

So that’s another interesting link between Seppo Ilmari(nen) and Sampo Koski.

So, why have I gone on this long winded tangent about Seppo Ilmari(nen) when I’m supposed to be talking about Sampo Koski?

Well, that’s because I think Sampo Koski’s real name is (or a variant of) Ilmarinen.

In the Hoyo universe, I believe Ilmarinen came from the planet Kalevala and ‘created’ the persona of Sampo Koski, much like how in the Kalevala, Seppo Ilmari(nen) forged The Sampo.

As I’ve listed above, there’s so many links between the two:

“Air” as a name and “Wind” as an element.

Seppo Ilmari(nen) ploughed a field of snakes to win Hiisi’s daughter’s hand in marriage, whilst Sampo Koski relies heavily on snake motifs for his attire.

Sampo’s two eidolon names that relate to love (which are completely different from the other 4 eidolon names), whilst Seppo Ilmari(nen) is known to be unlucky in love.

I’m pretty damn sure Sampo creates his own bombs and tinkers with the old relics to bring them back to life, whereas Seppo Ilmari(nen) is a smith who created the dome of the sky! They’re both artificers!

And now the revelation that a planet by the name of “Kalevala” exists is no mere coincidence.

So, either Sampo is Ilmari(nen) - or! - Sampo is a puppet (like Herta) created by someone called Ilmari(nen). 

(I would love if his 5* version is him with this name).

Right, I’m finished rambling. Gonna go huff some copium...

Joseph Alanen (1885-1920), 'Ilmatar', 1913-1916 "In the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, Ilmatar was a virgin spirit and goddess of the air. The name Ilmatar is derived from the Finnish word ilma, meaning "air," and the female suffix -tar, corresponding to English "-ress". Thus, her name means Airress. In the Kalevala she was also occasionally called Luonnotar, which means "female spirit of nature" (Finnish luonto, "nature").

She was impregnated by the sea and wind and thus became the mother of Väinämöine (..."a demigod, hero and the central character in Finnish folklore and the main character in the national epic Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot.")

THIS SCENE WAS SO GOOD FOR HER CHARACTERIZATION. “I wish I was good at something other than war.” was echoing through my head the entire time, because that’s what’s going on with Bo-Katan here, that for so very long now, she’s been alone, she’s fucked it all up, she doesn’t know how to lead, everyone has abandoned her and she was adrift. She was prepared to go off into the dark to eat her food like all the other cover members, she’s been so beaten down by all her losses.  Not just Mandalore over and over and over again, but her home on Kalevala now, too.  Everyone who was once loyal to her is gone. But then this group of Mandalorians welcomes her with open arms and pats on the back.  Bo-Katan, who hasn’t felt comraderie with other Mandalorians in so long desperately yearning for that in some corner of her heart, no matter how hard she tries to pretend it’s over. And then.  She’s the leader of the war party.  She has the honor of sitting by the fire to eat her food.  She’s alone in the shot, but they’re giving her something she has wanted all her life--to be good at something that helps people. She was the one who took off after Ragnar, she was the one who knew how to climb the cliff face, she was the one who was leading the party, this party that brought back a child safe and sound. Everything about this is a knife slipping under Bo-Katan’s armor to slice her open, to expose that part of her that has wanted all her life to be good at something that saves people and protects them.  Even in her most misguided moments (YOU JOINED A TERRORIST GROUP, BO) that’s what she wanted. And now it feels like maybe she might be getting it.  She can help because she’s good at fighting, good at war, and these Mandalorians will thank her for it. I don’t know if Bo-Katan is truly going to convert to the covert’s ways, she’s certainly on a mythic journey in her character arc/in her heart, the looming specter of the Mythosaur that she saw is one more thing that’s pulling her towards something more mystical and religious, but I love that I can see exactly why she’s being pulled there. How long has she been feeling like a failure and like she’s done more harm than good?  How can she not be lured in by being able to finally, finally use her skills at war to save someone and be welcomed for it?

lemminkäinen is a character in kalevala who, in order to win the hand of one of pohjola's daughters, is tasked to shoot the swan of tuoni

shooting the swan of tuoni brings doom to those who attempt it, and lemminkäinen even before attempting this is attacked by a man that shoots him into the tuoni river and eventually is described to be "shattered to pieces" by the son of tuoni who protects the river the swan resides in, which i always thought was a pretty gruesome visual....he's later put back together by his own mother, but there's already a famous painting about that part!

Iirc the man from kalevala said his remote planet is far from pier point and it'd take some time to get there. EXPLAIN HOW argenti went from penacony to kalevala and THEN returned to the xianzhou all in the span of like, a week. knowing that he usually stops to save people and that he has a normal spaceship unlike the crew, who have an aeon made train that can wrap in space. Argenti is such a convenient character...

I love argenti but he deserves a proper event like the ghostly groove or events like those cuz, WDYM we are slowly getting closer to SW with her minor roles in random events but not him (i still like the development with SW tho)

Helsingin Sanomat did an interview with Windows95Man. Here are some of the main points, translated and summarized for you who don't have access to it since it's paywalled.

Note, There is a section talking about his stance on Israel's paryicipation in esc as well as his own.

The topic of Israel was brought up and I'll translate that part fully here, because I think it is important to get in his words:

"Even though Keisteri said on Saturday, before the UMK win that he would be ready to represent Finland at Eurovision regardless of Israel partisipating, he also siad he wishes that Israel wasn't allowed to. The matter is not so simple now that he has actually won UMK.

'I'm not in this alone but with Henri. We got on this project to spread joy. That's what we want to do at Eurovision too,' keisteri says seriously.

'Everyone who's in this has to be comfortable.'"

"At the moment Keisteri doesn't want to take a stance on wether his and Piispanen's trip to Malmö is certain. There is no date on teh calendar when they must have an answer.

'Were stalling it now. We want to have a few rest days, so that we can think in peace.'

You can see from Keisteri that he has ended up as the target of a rough social media beatdown as the result of the Israel situation.

Keisteri has already formed one clear opinion. He wishes that every artist chosen for Eurovision could sign a petition, that demands Israel's removal.

'I'm gladly furthering something like this.'"

Back to the other things in the article:

The denim look started from a joke video he made for a friend.

The windows95 outfit was inspired by said video and became his Flow-outfit (I'm guessing referencing Flow festival, but it is not specified.)

Windows95Man developed from there for his first ever gig, and the artist name was chosen because Dj Windows95 already existed

The artist picture taken for his first show (the one of him lying on the bed in the get up with super bright flash) has made some wild rounds on the internet as a meme completely unrelated to him

He eventually got hired for a mini gig at a bar at Flow festival. The pay seemed unreasonably bad so he intentionally played bad music like Crazy Frog. The place became totally packed. This then resulted in a huge amount of small gig offers .

He recently watched the final performance with his wife and son. His son laughed and him and his wife cried. He apparently hadn't realized the affect that their performance had had on the crowd.'

He had wanted to perform naked, in a Kalevala creation story type of performance.

Once he gets a break from all this madness, he wants to sit down with Käärijä. Apparently Jere reached out to him after the victory.

Tapio – The Finnish god of forests and the hunt

Tapio is a Finnish forest spirit or god in Finnish mythology. Hunters prayed to him before a hunt. His wife is the forest goddess, Mielikki (Ref). He is the father of Annikki, Tellervo, Nyyrikki (the god of hunting), and Tuulikki. Fitting the Green Man archetype, Tapio has a beard of lichen and eyebrows of moss.

Tapio is a major character in Kalevala, the Finnish national epic based on Finnish and Karelian folklore, the hero Lemminkäinen offers him and Mielikki prayers, gold and silver so he can catch the Hiisi elk.

Tapio, the personified forest, was sometimes depicted as being the size of a fir tree, fierce-looking, like a human being in the front, but like a gnarled old tree from behind. Often the forest deity was female, occasionally an especially beautiful woman, who enticed hunters or woodcutters staying in the woods overnight; but he, too, turned out to be a rotten old stump upon closer scrutiny. The various forest deities and spirits were generally capricious in nature and had to be constantly placated by those who were dependent on their favours. Thus hunters made offerings to the deity and made sure they did not break any taboos in the forest, such as making excessive noise or shooting unusual birds that might be the forest spirit in disguise.

タピオ 〜 フィンランドの森と狩りの神

タピオはフィンランド神話に登場する森の精霊、または神である。彼の妻は森の女神ミエリッキ（参照）である。アンニッキ、テレルヴォ、ニャイリッキ (狩猟の神)、トゥーリッキの父である。タピオは、グリーンマンの原型にふさわしい人物で、地衣類の髭と苔の眉毛を持っている。

タピオは、フィンランドとカレリアの民話に基づくフィンランドの民族叙事詩『カレワラ』の主要人物である。『カレワラ』では、英雄レミンカイネンがヒイシのヘラ鹿を捕まえるために、彼とミエリッキに祈りと金と銀を捧げている。

森の精霊を擬人化したタピオは、モミの木の大きさで、正面から見ると人間のような獰猛な姿をしているが、後ろから見るとニョロニョロの老木のような姿で描かれることもあった。また、森の神は女性であることが多く、特に美しい女性で、森に一晩滞在する猟師や木こりを誘うこともあったが、彼もよくよく観察すると、腐った古い切り株であることが判明する。森の神々や精霊は気まぐれな性格で、その恩恵にあずかる者は常になだめなければならなかった。そのため、猟師は神に供物を捧げ、森での禁忌を破らないように気をつけた。例えば、過剰に音を立てたり、森の精霊の変装かもしれない珍しい鳥を撃ったりしないようにした。
