i get such a sense of primal envy when looking at edwin’s clothes up close because god you can just tell his coat is real wool and made to last and not cheap flimsy mass produced garbage and auggagghhhh that was just STANDARD in his time. by no means am i saying i was #borninthewronggeneration because i like having vaccines and household appliances but. man. to have a personally-tailored coat like that that’d last for years and years……. and fabrics of fine thread-dense quality………. if only

thinking about how I had a few folks at my last market suggest to me (kindly and with good intentions) that I make and sell some versions of the hand knit cardigan I was wearing because people would "totally pay $300 for that!"
I appreciated the sentiment, but people don't understand what goes into handmade clothes! I don't use a knitting machine. Every stitch in that garment is created by hand on needles, and the sleeves were brioche. Even using inexpensive acrylic yarn for the whole project, and accounting for the HUGE sleeve stitches (saving me time making the sleeves)—the material cost was $55 and the labor was well beyond that.
Let's conservatively estimate the cardigan took me 30 hours to create. Currently, when pressed to put a dollar amount to my time, I use the living wage as a baseline and then go up from there $1/hour for every year I have been actively practicing that particular skill. In the case of knitting that would be 11 years, and the current living wage in my area is approximately $23/hour. Setting aside the fact that this is calculated based on a 40 hour work week and I don't believe that is ethical or sustainable, we'll just leave it at $34/hour. That would make labor alone $1,020.
This brings the "production cost" to $1,075.
Items are not sold at production cost because that would leave your profit margin at 0%. This is not sustainable because it costs money to run a business (think things like paying for computer repairs, buying tools, the tablecloth you use at markets, paying for a website, etc.). Realistically to cover business costs and still come out with a 7% "net" profit margin, which is just a number pulled from averages in the clothing retail business...
... I'd have to sell that cardigan for $1,350.
So yeah! Something to think about when you see the price of clothes that are handmade. :o)

I am dead fucking serious when I say I wish I saw more fat women in public. I want to see fat models. I want to see fat women in department stores getting absolutely HYPE when they find racks and racks of clothing in their size and sizes up, so they too can get the "oversized, baggy fit" like women who fit into smalls and mediums. I want to see fat women wearing crop tops proudly and rocking mad midriff. I want to see fat women trying on clothing for their friends and family and saying "look! it compliments my body shape! it's like it was made for me!" I want to see fat women with "cankles" wearing pretty jingling anklets skipping and jumping just to show them off. I want to see fat women on TV, in magazines, on billboards, in all manner of ads, and in online shop images because I want to see my fucking self and all the women I know who don't see enough of themselves. I want to see fat women living, loving, and being visibly proud of who they are because they are beautiful, WE are beautiful. I want to see fat women because fat women need to see other fat women.

"Its impossible to shop 100% ethically" but its possible to fucking try no? Just because you cant guarantee that the brands who claim ethics are 100% honest doesnt justify shopping from brands that actively have reports of monsterous behaviour. There is always an alternative, thrift stores, buy nothing groups, second hand apps, or LEARN TO SEW!!!! It will change your life. But end of the day, you will live without your £4 shein blouse, cute clothes are not a fucking necessity. If you truly put having your ideal wardrobe over someones life, someones family , the planets welbeing... i think your selfish. Like actually fucking selfish. You dont need to buy 3 outfits a month btw, if you dont buy any new clothes for 2 months, just wear what you already own... you can buy a lovely garment from ethical brands that will LAST!!! Also, the argument that shein makes jobs is BULLSHIT!! Because all it does is close the gap in the market for ethical brands to emerge. The fashion industry if constantly growing and evolving, there will be brands and jobs if shein is taken down. Or !!!!! Alternatively, dont shut shein down, billionaire chris xu... pay your fucking workers. BILLIONAIRE chris xu, put some money into not KILLING your workers. Im sure you'll get a lot more clothes out of them when they can afford to eat.

bestie ik this is random but im having a fashion crisis (god that sounds so cheesy) and methinks your style fucks, gender as hell, literal goals etc etc.. soooooo whats your secret, do you have tips, how are you so swag, whats your inspo, how do u find/do stuff, please, looking at u w my big eyes, im so swagless
HUH??? respectfully my beloved: WHAT? I'm so bad at putting together good outfits I literally wear like the same rotation of like 5 articles of clothing or 2 fancier outfits :sob: I have like three to four pairs of pants that I rotate wearing and like a few shirts that I wear. I am very bad at style or clothing choices. I guess like the most significant thing is that I customize a lot of my clothing??? Like my bitb and other jrwi shirt I both made myself, I have another shirt that I embroidered a design on, and my two sweatshirts I customized but that's really the entire secret. I just make my clothes look cool myself and then they become a Safe Item(TM) and I wear it constantly. Like I probably wear my jrwi/bitb shirt at least once a week (I had to stop myself from wearing the jrwi shirt today bc im like I need to do a new outfit).
Like my main two outfits that I enjoy wearing is my cargo pants + either my bleached bitb shirt or my other jrwi shirt. And I wear that whenever possible. I just wear whatever is comfortable imma be so fr :sob: and those are my most comfortable items. Plus my patch sweatshirt. It's really just 90% of stuff that I've customized myself.

its been a billion years since I posted anything meaningful about mcga but I'm thinking about Alex helping Magnus with clothes.
I think Blitzen would love to help style Magnus, but I think he might accidentally end up being a bit overbearing, albeit with good intentions. He wants to help, but would probably end up tripping over his own fashion opinions more often than not, and Magnus would want to make his friend happy too much to actually voice his own opinions consistently. But Alex would understand that identity through fashion is something slow to be discovered on your own. It's not instant, it's a slow process of trying things and finding out what makes you feel good physically and emotionally. You can't pressure a person finding their own style, especially someone who's never had much room to do so and will likely feel guilty about making that room. She's gone through the process, and she'd probably be more than happy to help someone with it too.
I'm thinking about them going around to different stores and finding that Magnus likes second hand and low-end boutique stuff more than anything. Alex letting him onto her etsy account and buying his first piece of jewelry, taking him around to all of her favorite stores where she's greeted as a friend. Yeah, they could do all this in Valhalla, but where's the fun in that?
I think Magnus would like earth tones and dark, muted colors. He would avoid synthetic materials for their unnaturally soft textures and blue would make rare appearances. Alex would parade him around in his first pair of White Guy Khaki Shorts in five years, glowing with a silly sort of pride and Magnus feeling something kindle back to life in his chest at a growing collection or flannels, just like his mom. I'm imagining Magnus learning what it's like to live with his body, rather than despite it, and feel comfortable with himself in his surroundings for the first time since he was a little kid, taking a hike in the woods. And I'm thinking of Alex holding his hand the whole time.
#feeling sooooo sos normal rn#and i dont mean to make this post and trample the people who feel clothing has no bearing on their comfort or self perception#i just want to talk about how much it can mean to someone trying to find who they really are and come to terms with that person#and when i say style i dont mean aesthetic or fashion. i simply mean personal preferences for comfort and look (if that matters)#your personal style can literally be cheap graphic tees and basketball shorts and if that makes you happy then have fun!! live your truth!!#this is just me noting that magnus seems to almost intentionally avoid clothes except to mention discomfort and i think he should get a#happier relationship with his outer appearance than he has especially considering the royal fuckery thats happened with his bodily autonomy#and confidence within the context of the series#i might be crazy and projecting but i just want to give him something kind. as a treat.#and alex does seem to enjoy sharing her passions with those she cares about!! its quality time without any kind of social expectations#regarding the nature of their attachment. she can just spend time with someone she likes doing something she likes no strings attached.#im sure its qlso fun to gently heckle things throughout the process with someone whos gonna just nod along 💀#im thinking way too hard about this#but im gonna hit post and know. i am still thinking.#magnus chase#alex fierro#mcga#mcga headcannon#raspberry rambles
