i'm genuinely kinda pissed about this idk if you can tell

this is going to have far reaching consequences with the site's economy, when the quest log was a feature specifically added to fix these issues in the first place. stamps are likely already jumping in price as people buy them up cheap now that we're unable to reroll.

and beyond that it'll have far reaching consequences with the relationship between tnt and the playerbase, because they just straight up lied to us even in support tickets. there is simply no way this is an "exploit", not when there is/was unique graphics and text relating to skipping quests.

they clearly put work into this system, so gutting it and claiming afterwards that it was an exploit while saying they're "keeping it in mind for the future" is just blatantly false and sets a precedent that tnt is unwilling to be honest with players. no amount of monthly qnas and transparency can fix that.

First time designing a new Neopet character in almost a year and it's this weird dog

I want really bad to get a container of chia seeds and mix in equal amounts of varied carpet beetles, and then watch them crawl.

ONE OR TWO WILL BECOME REAL

took a stab at tweaking the Darigan Chia- it was a good lesson in humility, if I'm being honest. Its never been my favorite design, so I went overboard at first with changes, and then ended up reigning it back in and feeling more appreciative of the original design then when I started.

(my original 'heavily redesigned' version before I walked it back a little)

The main things I wanted to change going in:

the spots not having shading

the face looking silly instead of intimidating

unclear attachment of the horns + the one closest to the viewer looking like it was attached at a weird angle

the claws on the feet looking like a mustache and not looking attached

the weird little claw at the base of the wings, which is incomprehensible to me

the angles and positioning of the back spikes - two of them seem like maybe they're coming from the back of the arm, but its unclear, and they also create a weird tangent with the already confusing wings

Shading the spots was easy- I ended up adding a few more too, since the value of the spots is so similar to the value of the shadows, the design felt like it needed a few extra that overlap the shaded area. After I decided I wasn't keeping my tailed redesign, I went back and added even more spots to the forehead- if I kept something else from that version, it'd probably be those spots, I think they look nice.

The funny face with the visible lower teeth implies an underbite to me, so I redrew it a little fiercer. I also played around with the idea of a cuter vampiric happy kitty mouth, but it felt too different from the original design.

I understand the original artist's decision to design the eyes the way they did them (the upper line of the eye is the chia's original eye, so if you put contacts on them they look weird but Less weird than they will on completely redrawn eyes), but decided to give my edit the Darigan Wocky redrawn eyes treatment instead, since the base Chia eyes are, imo, kind of awful.

While I made their attachment to the head more clear, I feel that I failed to make the closer horn aligned properly, and I don't think how I drew the rings on the horns makes sense with how they attach to the head either. Symmetrical curved horns are so hard to draw in perspective, and I suspect the original artist had way less time than I spent on my attempt, too. Maybe someday it'll bug me enough to take another stab at it, but I'm setting it down for now, lol

I'm not 100% sure the bigger claws I ended up going with are an improvement either- while they look more attached to the foot and less like mustaches, you lose some of the teal color on the feet, and that color is nice.

I initially redrew the wings completely, but ended up liking the shape of the original wings way better- mine feel cluttered, and my attempt to bring the teal back in a second spot doesn't have the nice contrast that the white webbing has. While I was making slight edits to the original wings, I realized that without the spike tangents and with the far wing re-positioned slightly, I probably wouldn't mind the strange little claws. Its not like this style of cartoon bat wing is realistic anyway.

Oh and I also gave my more elaborate redesign a tail because I felt like it looked like it was gonna fall over, and slit pupils because uhhhhh, and I gave all of them shinier hair because I got carried away and its fun.

Can I ask for an Ice color neopet review? Cause uhh question to TNT: why is Bruce the only one not made of ice like the others??

Ice was first introduced via the Ice Bori, which was exclusive to the Neopets toolbar (which was basically a rebranded Yahoo! toolbar). Ice was the only unique Bori color you could make and the Ice Bori still has restrictions to this day. On top of that, ice as a whole is a lab ray-exclusive colour, making it a pain to get for any species of Neopet.

For such an exclusive, rare colour however, ice always felt a bit underwhelming, if I'm being honest (and yes, that includes the super special Ice Bori). For one, it already shares a bit of concept with the colour Snow. The executions are very different, but there's undeniably some overlap there. And secondly, "ice" is just not a very exciting concept—it's just a regular Neopet, but made of ice. There is a bit of variation in how it's sculpted, as some pets are smooth like real ice sculptures and some are more polygonal, but it's more-or-less a copy/paste for each pet, without anything to really make them unique individually.

Being a very straightforward colour, Ice was not really affected much by conversion. Some pets had a few details tweaked for whatever reason, such as some becoming less polygonal, but otherwise ice still looks about the same as it used to.

Favorite Species:

Bruce: I lied when I said all Ice pets are the same. There are two exceptions: the Hissi, shown below, and the Ice Bruce, which is designed to look like a Brucicle (basically the Neopets version of those novelty shaped ice creams on a stick). Admittedly, it does bug me that this one stands out so much—I feel like it would've been better as it's own Bruce-exclusive colour, like you could have a Magical Red Brucicle ala fruit and veggie Chias)—but it at least has a fun concept, which is more than you can say for most Ice pets.

My only other issue with this one is that, unlike other Ice pets, the Ice Bruce got it rough with conversion, and completely lost the point of the concept. I do like the texturing of the converted version—looks more like ice cream, whereas the UC/styled version looks like cardboard—but why they thought altering it was a good idea at all is beyond me.

Hissi: The other Ice pet to actually have a concept, the Hissi is based off of the Snowager, and has a really cool design to match. The stripes give it some much-needed flavor compared to other Ice pets, and I like the bit of subtle transparency as well.

Cybunny: Out of all the standard Ice pets, I think I like the Cybunny the best. It's not the most amazing design in the world or anything, but the texturing is nice, complete with a few sharp unfinished angels and some scratchy lines. It's also nice and shiny, and retains a good amount of contrast, unlike some other Ice pets.

Least Favorite Species:

Wocky: One of the few Ice pets that was made worse during conversion for no real reason, the Ice Wocky is a bit of a mess. The shading is all over the place, the actual texturing is basically non-existent, and the polygons don't make sense with the body and are negated by areas that have a lot of detail, like the fur and the eyes.

The pre-customization version wasn't great or anything, but it was at least better shaded and the polygons were less intrusive, making it far more appealing than whatever we ended up with.

i am thinking about them and i am giving them animals to hang out with. yeag

hiei - falcon

falconeers don't really own their falcons. it takes a long time to build trust with them, and they can fly away at any time. they are wild animals

i think hiei would appreciate that untamed quality, and the speed, sight, and skill of them. i think he'd want a capable animal companion, if any at all

note: kuwabara would be freaked out by the emphasis on competence/functionality as well as the impermanence of it. he views animals as creatures to be protected and cherished, while hiei would rather spend time with something capable, self-sufficient, and useful (stealing this idea from my eikichi fic bc i think im right)

the closer an animal or an animal-owner relationship is to a baby/baby-parent relationship, the further he wants to be from it. it grosses him out a Lot. to him, it's like adopting an adult and then babytalking it

i think he'd enjoy small, clever troublemakers

there's some tension inherent with kurama owning any prey animal (i think they sense his foxness), but if he finds one that isn't bothered by it, i think they'd get along just fine

if i had to guess at a reason for it i'd say it's a matter of feeling appreciated. you generally can't get cats to do anything they don't want to do, so that means when they show you love, it's extra special. and i think his perseverence with challenges could help him win over even the most reluctant of cats, as well as his gentleness and unconditional love towards those critters

i think kuwa likes winning animals/people over and feeling chosen and seen

strong preference for very social animals, particularly mammals (so not, like, hermit crabs). i think he'd like dogs too

hates mice, so kurama's rats would be a bit weird for him

not huge on fish or reptiles, but willing/able to admire the coolness of them after freaking out for a bit. not huge on bugs and usually doesn't get over that

yusuke - it's complicated

i hate to say it but i don't think yusuke's really an animal person

HOWEVER. i do see him having a 50-year love-hate relationship with a sassy parrot. idk why i just think he'd argue with a bird

less used to short lifespans relative to him, would probably do better with something that lives longer, i.e. a parrot, while he's adjusting to that reality

bonus points bc he's kind of a bird (puu bird imagery)

though i think he'd appreciate feeling wanted and loved, i don't know that the responsibility of a pet would make him feel grounded and secure (i.e. kuwabara), but more anxious and constricted.

his carefree lifestyle would conflict with high maintenance pets, so he probably avoids them for a long time until he's ready to settle down

i think he likes dogs like he likes kids. they're cool to spend time with, but he's probably not gonna feel ready for them until they get dumped on him. i can see him dogsitting for keiko.

ok. i know birds are probably everyone's first thought bc of her bird friends at tarukane's, but i have a counter-proposal:

i think yukina loves birds but wouldn't want to trap them. she strikes me more as a feeding-birds-at-the-park type + knows what it's like to be trapped (and resents it)

she would be very willing to take in a wild bird that, due to injury or illness, could not be re-released. i think she'd love that

instead, i propose: hermit crabs and brine shrimp

my justifications for this are pretty limited. i mostly just think she'd be really into little guys. and i think she'd have a bit more interest in pets that would be considered weird or boring by others (i.e. cockroaches, beetles, tarantulas), especially if they come from non-icy climates. i can picture her holding everything from an iguana to a maggot with similar enthusiasm. but i think she'd likely start with small aquatic guys

plus, she feels a lot less bad about the trapping thing because they need to be in water to survive. it feels more right to her

anyway i just feel like she'd enjoy aquatic stuff. maybe because it's novel, if the ice world was too cold for them to be accessible

i like to think there's ponds on genkai's property that she could put koi or turtles in

i also struggled with her a lot, but i think she'd be a dog person

AND i also think she'd be into those small rodents, i.e. hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs (for smth bigger). maybe she had a few as a kid and never really got bored with them like others did. quite passionate about their value as pets, very upset about how they are treated by broader communities

part of me says she'd want a little dog and part of me says she'd want a huge rowdy dog (a bit like yusuke), so maybe she can have both. as a treat :)

though if i had to place anyone as interested in raising farm animals (as livestock or as pets), it'd be her. idk why but i can see her caring for geese and pigs and stuff. she wouldn't mind the hard and often dirty work of it

-Ranking Neopets by Design and Colors-

My sister and I are in a nostalgia kick over neopets and I've decided to do some design geeking and talk about neopet creature design.

Like I am with Pokemon I prefer my Neopets looking definitevely neo-ish, so less like just any old animal you can find in the real world. Keep that in mind as I separate these by both objective opionion ("that's a well designed neopet") vs my personal preferences ("zomg that's MY FAVORITE neopet"). Know that I'm trying to take into account the:

overall design with the basic paintbrush colors

paintbrush creativity

Unconverted vs converted art and how the likability changes therein because of the character that crosses over from the art (I personally dgaf about unconverted art. I think the stock-look for the pets is fine as it is it just sucks to loose what was such cute art for the paintbrushes)

customability

a final note: I've never played neopets for myself. I don't have time to take care of a virtual pet, let alone 4 or more now that I'm an adult. While I'd like to have a neofamily and work hard for the money for them I kind of would really prefer a job first.

All of these preferences come from watching my sister play the game and my own fondness for the pets as toys and as comics over the years.

It's hard to mess up an elephant and it's "less is more" here. Personally I think it's new sprite is a VAST improvement compared to it's old one. I hated it's creepy grin growing up. Elephante is a cutesy elephant with a bunny tail and teeny tiny wings that's sitting down in the old art. How can you POSSIBLY ruin that gorgeous art with a nasty toothy grin?

Not a huge fan of evil/notevil species variants. Apparently it's more of a fish than it is a dolphin which knocks it down a few points as I always wanted it and Jetsam to be dolphins.

I'm very split on Ogrin. For some reason or another I find Ogrin kind of ugly and overdesigned. Like, it looks like the protagonist to a 3d animated not-Dreamworks film that takes place on another planet who's voiced by Frankie Muniz. And yet I admire it in terms of being a unique creature. Feels like a Dr. Seuss creation because of it's paw feet, or like the camelopard of old beastiaries. As with all personal unfavorites, I like moreso it's paintbrush colors than I do the species overall.

The critical side of my brain is hellbent on pointing out how Peophin is JUST a hypocampus...but the mythology horsegirl in me is just gushing over there being a hypocampus at all. Genuinely I think it's really regal and cute and pretty. Would love one as a plushie. Also I think it's newer art is superior to it's old art.

Perfect dog-thing especially with it's evil toyvariant that always creeped me out. Besides that though it's very much a neopet's neopet with them big ole 2000s' eyes. Love it. The only limited edition pet that I think is worth it's limited-editionness.

Personal fav since I had a beloved Shoyru as a plush as a kid. I count it as a dragon even though it's supposed to be a pterosaur. I think I just really love it's face and body and the fact that it's wings are separate from it's body actually makes it stand out from the dinosaur it's supposed to be.

Again never liked the "coded to be evil"-type neopets, but a decent grumpygrump dragon person. Adorable.

I have a soft spot for Uni since I overhated it so much as a kid for being 'girly'. TBH I don't hate unicorn/pegasus hybrids in their own isolated fantasy and I think Uni just looks perfectly adequate as one. Also great alt. for My Little Pony lovers who want their ponies looking like ponies again and don't need a cutiemark to enjoy a good fantasy horse.

I have a thing against usuls. Always found them utterly unappealing personally wise and overrated by TNT. They're good 'not exactly squirrel'-creatures but they're hampered by it's basic coloring problems. Also, it always struck me as a "mean girl" neopet even though I guess canonically that's what Uni is. Bleh.

Vandagyre 5/10 | 6/10

I don't know what it is. I think it's the pose, but objectively I think Vandagyre is kind of lazy even though other neopets work well with the "this animal but with these other animal parts added on". I feel like the paintbrushes though really go hard or go home for this pandabearowl, so I like that.

Very cute but...literally just a cat. Also it's basic coloring could be annoying with it almost always having a pink-ruff.

I remember when this thing debued. Such a fun time! I love how they look vaguely lion-maney but also gerbil like. So cute. So NEOPET.

Zafara 9/10 | 8/10

Perfect neopet to end an alphabet with and also just to end off on. Like a neopet version of a Dr. Seuss creation. I love it's smile and it's spikes. It's just very friendly.
