Chris realizing in Texas that his grandparents always talk about his love life with gendered terms

"do you have a girlfriend back in LA?"

"you could meet some nice girl at pool club"

etc

And one night he remembers his talk with his dad, who used neutral terms "someone" "they'll love you"

And from that point he hates everytime his grandparents mention his love life, up until the point he explodes and tell them why he hates it

"It feels like you're not giving me a choice! Either I can like a girl or I'm not liking anyone!"

"But you like girls!"

"Yes Christopher, you do like girls, you've told us you do! What are we even talking about right now"

"I mean I yes I do but if I could like boys too or only boys"

"Are you trying to tell us something son?"

"Yes! B-but not THAT! (and don't come me son!!)"

"You've lost me Christopher, if you're not gay what is this all about"

"I- I wouldn't feel confortable telling you if I liked boys"

Then later Adriana comes by, and since Chris is still mad at his grandparents, she goes to speak with him

But when they talk she doesn't seem to realize what he's mad about either at first, not until he explains that his dad was always careful to make sure he knew it was okay to love anyone

"oh... Sorry I didn't.. I didn't get it at first because that's just how we grew up but you're right, Eddie is right, it's good that he always gave you that safety"

"so you never had it when you were young?"

"hm well, I didn't feel unsafe, of course! And I'm sure Adriana and your dad never felt unsafe either! But yeah no, I'd doubt if l had have a sexuality crisis, I would have felt like I could confide in them... I would probably have told Edmundo though. Because when he loves you, he loves you forever ad no matter what, you know? "

"...yeah I know"

Then Chris starts wondering how different exactly have his and his dad's childhoods been.

On a TOTALLY UNRELATED note, he starts sending texts to Buck

Chris : did you only realized you liked men recently because you grew up with people not giving you another choice than liking women?

Buck : oh wow

Buck : i mean, it depends who you call people? are we talking specific or just like ✨society✨? because I never really had problem of feeling like my family wouldn't accept me, my parents bc i didn't think they cared about me enough to be bothered by who i'd date, and Maddie bc she loves me no matter whats. but sex ed was mostly about how not to get a girl pregnant, and in middle school 'gay' was still used as an insult so maybe that played a role subconsciously?

Buck : but honestly I just didn't realize that what I felt towards some men was the same attraction I've felt for women

Buck : can I ask why you're asking?

Chris : just like that dw

Buck : you know your dad will always love you and be there for you?

Chris : i know

Buck : and me too! I'll always be proud of you

Chris : i'm not trying to come out buck

Buck : ok!!

Buck : but if you did it wouldn't change a thing

Chris : i know i know

Chris : thanks

And maybe after that, Chris starts wondering if his dad would've been confortable to be queer growing up the way he did. And when the answer is an obvious no, maybe Chris starts thinking about how his dad used to keep it all in when he was sad about Mom, and if maybe he also kept it all in when he was young and sad about not being accepted

Just read a fic where Chris calls Buck ‘Pop’ and it’s cute and adorable and some part of me really sees that it can happen, especially if buddie does become canon, but also—I can just see him call Buck as Buck for the rest of their lives. I can see Chris just default to always calling him his Buck, because Buck to him exists on another plane, another label, another important person in his life. Buck doesn’t mean more than Dad or less than Dad, it exists in its importance on its own. Buck is Buck. But also I can just really see him call him Dad—on the occasions that Chris needs to, or needs Buck to hear it. I can see Chris using Dad the same way Eddie uses Evan. When they want to address that part of Buck, the part they know needs to be dragged out sometimes but love all the same, maybe even more.

Okay but when Eddie comes home with Chris, even though the 118 crew and families love to throw Going Away or Welcome Back parties (at the Bathena house) I feel like as soon as Buck gets word that eddies on his way back, Buck is like “yup, everyone back off, I’m just gonna get beer, a pizza and a video game, I’ve missed my pseudo son!”

Still very angry at Eddie, Chris makes a wish to the universe that Eddie wouldn't be his dad

The Universe : so you want different parents?

Christopher : i just don't want Dad

Then he wakes up in an alternative universe where he isn't Eddie Diaz's son....

But Buck and Shannon's son somehow

In this universe :

Unfortunately Shannon is still dead i this universe, but at least Buck doesn't seem to have had a weird thing with her doppelganger

Shannon and Buck never were in a serious relationship, they just slept together during like a holiday thing they both went to, and decided to have the baby and coparents. Since none of them have a good job yet, they rely a lot on the Buckley's money to take care of Chris, which is why they agree to have Margaret and Philip in Chris's life (otherwise Buck didn't want to impose them to his kid)

Shannon still leaves when Chris is like 3, and Buck and him move to LA to be closer to her, and Buck becomes a Firefighter in the 118, where Chim, Hen, Bobby and Eddie already work

Buck having a kid somehow pushes Maddie to leave Doug sooner, and the end of their story is approximately the same, except it happened before she met Chimney

Chimney and Maddie do end up together but their story is really different, and so much so that Jee-Yun and baby Han n°2 don't exist

Also Eddie is like openly gay in this universe

Once Chris realizes he's in another universe, he immediately regrets his wish, and misses Eddie. He knows he needs help to find his way back home, so he goes to Hen and Chimney about it.

Hen seems to not really believe him, while Chimney (after discovering he has a daughter in the real verse) is absolutely on board to help him

I could imagine somewhere in the story, Chris and Eddie having a talk where Eddie tells him about his childhood and his parents (the way Buck would talk about his parents to Chris in the real verse) which might help Chris understand his father a little bit more

Then thanks to Chim and maybe the rest of the 118 fam, Chris finds a way to take back his vow and go back to his world.

Now he sees his father differently, and his relationship with Buck too

And there's like a conclusion to make probably but I have no idea rn

“These conversations are supposed to be sappy!” Buck says. Chris makes a ‘throwing up’ motion. “You know what? Come here, you little snot-” Buck lunges across the couch, dragging Chris into his arms, hugging him tightly. Chris wiggles for a second, not really trying to break free but just showing his displeasure at being “forced” to hug his buck. Buck scents him a little, just because he can and it feels playful and right in the moment. “Ughhhh, Buck.” Chris complains. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’re too old and too cool to hug me, and to have me scent you, and to have sappy conversations.” Buck says. They both giggle together. Then the moment settles. -OR- The Chris and Buck episode.

Eddie smiles, bright like the sun, and Buck knows he’s made the right choice. Even if he’s never going to get over the crush he has on Eddie now. OR Buck Misses Eddie's scent and he goes a little crazy girl insane. Eddie comes home, and shows buck just how much he missed him back.

ahhhh my first ever (published) 9-1-1 fic!! i have some more serious ones in the works, but this is mostly just buck missing eddie and a/b/o fluff hahaha

i think why buck and chris relationship is so important to me because yes i understand eddie loves chris without conditions, that’s his son. he’s an amazing father. that’s his own flesh and blood. he tries to do right by him. he is doing right. his love for him is enormous, it transcends everything in his life.

chris is his life. there’s no doubt about it. i can definitely understand a parent’s love. how protective he is of christopher. but buck? buck isn’t his flesh and blood, buck has only known this kid when he was seven. and i do not attempt to say that he loves chris just as much as eddie (maybe to eddie he does) (nobody will fight for my son as hard as you) BUT he loves him in his own unconditional way. he’s an amazing person in chris’ life. he tries to do right by him. takes note of everything, listens to every detail and makes it happen for chris. his love for him is enormous, it also transcends things in his life.

he took this kid in and loved him in such a way it seems paternal. it seems familial. it seems like he wants to take him in, take him as his own and he has. he doesn’t seem to have any relationship close to it. and there’s this want that makes me visceral. to want to continue doing this, doing life, doing cupcakes and homework and going to the zoo.

it’s one thing for a step parent to love their step kid, that’s a wonderful thing on its own, but in canon buck and eddie aren’t together. and they only show this type of relationship with them. like!!!
