For as much as people shit on him, Chris Thorndyke is not a fundamentally bad character. Him being the human bestie and POV character for the audience is fine, the problem is that his overuse renders much of the extended cast useless and his character arc is executed so poorly that it makes him really unlikable

Sonic character design is at its worst when they try to make it as "Sonic-like" as possible, and at its best when it's at its most unconventional (i.e. Fang the Sniper, the Witchcarters, the Kukku Empire, the humans in Sonic Unleashed and Chronicles, SatAM and AOSTH characters, etc)

Infinite's maskless design is lame

Sally Acorn, Amy Rose, Princess Elise and Lanolin aren't the worst characters, you just want to hate female characters. There are way worse written characters and you choose those three to bash on

That said, Chris Thorndyke and Charmy Bee aren't annoying, you just hate children. Chris' unwilling to let Sonic go in the finale of Sonic X's season two wasn't a dick move, that's his character arc. And of course Charmy being loud, annoying and basically dooming the resistance by turning himself into a zombot to try and save someone makes sense. He's a god damn six year old

Ian Flynn trying to "simplify" Fang the Sniper takes away all that made him interesting, his weirdness and confusing design (he literally took away Fang's hybrid side and him being originated from the Special Zone. Blaze exists, why can't Fang be from another dimension too?)

Gemerl not having Emerl's personality isn't neither a betrayal nor a bad take on his character. In fact, it makes his contrast with Emerl and comparison to Omega and Metal Sonic better. Shard is not coming back guys. Cope

Sonic Forces should've been less focused on Classic Sonic and more on the Rookie. In fact, Shadow should've replaced Classic Sonic in the storyline

Sonic Colors is worse than Sonic 06 in terms of storyline and the DS version should've been the real deal

As fun and awesome and amazing as Sonadow is (totally not speaking from bias), making it non-canon is the best for everyone

Characters like Shadow and Omega shouldn't have a classic form, but it would be interesting to see other modern characters in classic form

Classic characters shouldn't be confined to the "classic universe". Archie's best parts were when classic and modern characters interacted (Mighty and the Werehog, Shadow and the Hooligans, Jet and Speedy)

The idea of the Babylon Rogues being associated to the Kukku Empire in the past IS an interesting concept. What isn't is the Kukku Empire being associated with the Babylon Garden. They should be their own villains

As goofy as Sonic Chronicles was, it wasn't a bad game at all

Sonic characters acting immature shouldn't be a big deal. They are kids, no matter how many times you point out how they removed the ages at the Sonic Channel site. Amy Rose herself was at her best when she was an immature hotheaded girl

As much as I wish Silver was more serious at IDW, him acting excited and happy isn't bad either. He's healing from multiple broken futures

Silver and Blaze are better staying out as platonic. If Sonic and Shadow's tanabata references can be seen as platonic, then those two can two. That said, their relationship should still be seen as meaningful to both of them (perhaps more to Silver than to Blaze). Male and female friendships exist without it being instantly romantic

Sonic Shuffle shouldn't be shafted just because of the weird gameplay and human-like characters. The Maginaryworld characters should make a comeback (ESPECIALLY with to the implications of the angel statue in Sonic CD's Wacky Workbench)

We need more truly irredeemable female villains (Surge doesn't count, I'm talking about characters like Witchcart, Lien-Da, Thunderbolt)

For the love of God, Sega. Bring Classic characters back

If you can give personality to Metal Sonic and Mecha Sonic II, you can give to the other robots (and no, making Tails Doll an eldritch horror doesn't count)

My interpretation of the "young Robotnik/Eggman (late teens to early-mid 20s), before he turned evil" concept. Inspired by the Archie Comics and Tales of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Julian Kintobor was a mechanical prodigy and lab assistant to Dr. Nate Morgan from the human city of Megapolis in the United Federation. When his mentor was framed for treason by GUN after refusing to build weapons of mass destruction to use against the Mobians, he fled the city and wound up in the Kingdom of Acorn; where was found by Julius "Jules" Hedgehog and his older brother, Sir Charles, aka Uncle Chuck, and taken to Mobotropolis. After convincing King Frederick that he meant no harm and being reunited with Dr. Morgan, Julian became one of the kingdom's royal scientists.

When the Great War broke out, Julian's older brother, General Colin Kintobor, led an attack on Mobotropolis. Refusing to let his new home be destroyed, Julian used his knowledge to improve Acorn's arsenal and form battle plans to defend the city. After a month long siege, they drove Colin and his forces back.

For his bravery and cunning, Julian was appointed Warlord of Acorn, becoming the first human to hold the title, as well as the youngest at the age of 19. He would hold the office until the end of Great War over 10 years later, eventually becoming an independent researcher.

Julian's appearance is partly modeled after Chris Thorndyke, while his Warlord uniform is inspired by Robotnik’s modern Sonic and movie designs.

We have a comic book based on a videogame series, but for reasons, we don't want to use the game characters besides the protagonist and villain because we're afraid to do something with lasting consequences with the rest of the game cast, so instead we have THESE other comic exclusive ones that we're gonna use in their place because it's so much easier.

You know, at this point I ask myself "Why care about this comic that was supposed to distance itself from Archie, only to go back into the same old pit where the comic exclusive characters matter and are more than the game cast?"

They had five years. Have they invested in any significant arc for the game characters who are not named Sonic, Tails or Eggman?

They do give them their moments, but that's the problem... they're only moments, small glimpses here and there, but never anything more substantial beyond that.

Always felt an ill omen ever since Yuji Urkawa made that vover for IDW where on the forefront we see Sonic, Tangle and Whisper, while in the background and only as blackened silhouettes, Tails, Amy and Knuckles. Didn't say anything back then because I was still willing to give the book the benefit of the doubt, but god if my gut was telling me that day what is already known: the game cast are NOT the stars. Again they're displaced to 2nd tier.

Why the hell does this always happen when americans handle the Sonic comics?

Sure, JP aren't saints when it comes to also adding OC's like Chris Thorndyke in Sonic X... and still, even then it wasn't THIS bad with the game characters... what the vast majority of fans expect to see front and center, are displaced.

You don't see them written in the same interesting ways they do with the OC's.

So the question here is, who's to blame?

To me, they're all equally guilty. Either because oversight from Sega (again), or because of taking advantage of a good disposition by people who wish they were on the same standing as Sonic Team, and forgot that the comic was supposed to be for everyone and not just for their exclusive characters.

I hope things with IDW go back to a healthy balance, and to give the game cast their place and respect, because those are characters that earned their place, and to see them used in a minimized capacity leaves a bad taste and feeling. To do otherwise, is something that is starting to stink like hubris.

It is not entirely true that if you call him "Chris" you start that block, the block started because apparently the last words of the last name are seen as a forbidden word even though technically speaking it is Thorndyke 🤣

Yes I named him after one of the main human characters in Sonic and I don't regret it

What if...Black Verge Became a Story Arc For Sonic X?

What if...Black Verge ( or at least some elements of it ) was integrated into a story arc of the FoxBox/Jetix anime series, Sonic X? What would the story be like? Would it be an alternate story arc?  How would most of the series characters ( including Chris Thorndyke ) be affected by the events? What characters would be involved? Where would the story arc take place? Who else would get captured by Black Arms and assimilated into alien beings aside from Sonic, Knuckles and maybe even Shadow?

Idw stans are so damn funny. They really think sonic team is obligated to avoid contradicting the comics even though sonic team are the ones who created and are in charge of THE MAIN SONIC SERIES THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE FRANCHISE IS BUILT AROUND along with the fact that idw is literally optional filler and nothing more. That's not even getting into how the comics constantly contradict the games despite their "totally legitimate" status as canon.

I really want to try and understand how they perceived..... REALITY IN GENERAL, let alone the function of a multi media franchise that also happens to be the mascot of a billion dollar corporate conglomerate, that they think that Takashi Iizuka the president of Sonic Team is seriously gonna be sat in a room and be told "this is what we're writing for the comics, therefore you need to change what you're creating for the new game to accommodate that storyline." Keeping in mind that this comic is published by a foreign third party company who's working relationship with SEGA begins and ends with the comic company paying SEGA for the permission to create a comic book using their licensed property.

These people are legitimately fucking insane. They do not perceive reality the same way you and I do. Visual and auditory simulation is processed by their brain differently than everyone else's brain processes the same information. There is simply no other explanation.

Sonic Team didn't give a fuck about the Archie comics, didn't give a shit about the western produced cartoon shows, didn't give a shit about the JAPANESE produced anime which if anything would influence the course of game development it'd have been that right but no they didn't add Chris Thorndyke into any of their games. Didn't give a shit about the movies outside of taking some aesthetic inspiration. Didn't give a shit about Sonic Prime.

Why the fuck do they seriously, legitimately, think that Sonic Team is suddenly going to be beholden in their video game development to the whims of the IDW comic book?

Insanity. Plain and simple. These people are fucking insane.
