the more i listen to behind the bastards podcast history stories, the more i'm like 'wow rich people really will do endless horrible stuff in pursuit of ever more wealth (even if they're already comfortable and could remain comfortable simply NOT doing more horrible stuff to others)' and also 'wow lack of empathy is a huge problem'
#rant#things i wish were taught so much more (but with schools being defunded and all the other stuff ehh i doubt i'll see it for a while)#are: critical thinking. and Building Empathy#i wish local libraries did weekly Critical Thinking classes where they showed public visitors to the class a news article. then explaine#how to check the sources and how to determine the biases of the author and the goal of the author. and then did that with an instagram post#and a facebook ad. and a bot reddit post.#and a news piece on TV. it would help regular people SO much to have a refresher class on critical thinking#and then also a weekly library class on Building Empathy#it could be really simple: invite everyone in the class to introduce themselves and some facts about their background or likes or family#and have everyone in the class do a team building activity - possibly a fun one like make an art piece together that'll be hung up in libra#library. or plant some plants in a community garden. simply MEETING people outside their normal groups#will foster more empathy.#do the same with a kids class. other activities can include encouraging people to read 1 new narrative book every few month#the library can recommend the book or take recommendations from the class. and then each meeting the group discusses thoughts on the book#its about getting the whole GROUP to practice empathizing with characters that are unlike them. sometimes the book will have a narrator#unlike someone in the group.#just some regular weekly community classes like this would do SO MUCH to help a community#i'd love to see schools do this too - as there's structured time to actually do this (team building activities and empathy building)#and assignments where teachers can focus on critical thinking (essays. news article/book analysis. history class. english class. science#class. any class using sources of information can practice teaching kids critical thinking)

How RC Drones Are Being Used in STEM Learning?

Nowadays, classrooms aren’t places where kids bury their noses in textbooks and read aerodynamics. Parents and students prefer classes to take students on a more pragmatic experience, and for classes that involve the basic or advanced concepts of STEM learning, RC drones can be a great idea to offer a highly engaging and hands-on learning experience. However, what exactly are RC drones and how are they changing the landscape of STEM learning? Well, here’s a guide.
A Practical Approach
Anybody who applies theoretical knowledge in practical applications can understand concepts better, and RC drones allow people to do just that. Whether we are talking about understanding the principles of flight, working with physics, or learning about wireless communication, drones offer an interactive and memorable way to teach even the most intricate STEM concepts with ease:
Aerodynamics: Understanding how air resistance, lift, and drag affect flight.
Mechanics: Understand the hardware applications and mechanical aspects of the RC drone.
Physics and Math: Applying principles like velocity, angles, and distance to improve flight precision.
Integrating Drones into STEM Education
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education revolves around critical thinking, innovation and teamwork. These are the qualities that perfectly align with drone technology, and this is why educators should leverage this excellent way to help students understand emerging technologies.
For instance, students can use drones to collect data for environmental studies, such as mapping ecosystems or monitoring weather patterns. In engineering classes, students can experiment with drone design, testing modifications that improve flight efficiency or speed. In addition, RC drones can also be integrated into robotics programs or even light sports where students test their motor skills while flying a drone through the obstacle course. We would say, the possibilities for innovation are limitless.
Encourage Collaboration and Teamwork
Operating an RC drone isn’t just a one-person job. It often involves teamwork—one person pilots the drone, another monitors its movements, and a third analyzes data or plans routes. Drone-based projects allow students to take on different roles based on their interests. Whether they are more inclined towards, engineering, physics, or data analysis, there’s a role for everyone, making STEM learning more inclusive and dynamic.
It’s a Wrap!
There’s no denying the fact that RC drones are a massive step ahead of the conventional toys for hobbyists, but if you are really into RC models, and want your drone to glide without any glitches or crashes, be sure to pick the right model. Looking for top-notch RC drone models within a reasonable price range? You can find them at EXHOBBY. Especially the Ranger2400 is one of the website bestsellers. It’s easy to assemble and has a large wingspan for better stability. The device comes with an optional FPV camera mounting.
You get a pre-cut hole and a flat bed to add different FPV cameras, and the uni-body plastic fuselage makes the plane flexible, lightweight, and safe in case of crash landings. Need more information, or want to buy the product? You are just a click away!

Success Story: Aileen Lost 79 lbs!

Aileen S. Age: 45 Starting Weight: 234 Weight now: 155
What was the transforming point that encouraged your way of living change?
In 2008, I lost about 70 pounds, yet I never really reached my target weight. Over the following few years, I continuously returned on even more than fifty percent of that weight. I was miserable with myself and my capacity to do things with my youngsters and good friends, like jump on a trampoline or go clothes shopping. In the summertime of 2012, we went on vacation as well as I despised seeing myself in images. I had a now-or-never minute and determined that if I wished to be delighted, I required to start doing points for myself as well as develop my own joy.
People wish to know just how I did it, as well as the response is I believed. I believed in me. If I was mosting likely to more than happy in my life and also with my body, I needed to do it myself. Between August 16, 2012 and January 16, 2013, I shed 44 extra pounds and also strike my target weight. I had shed 79 extra pounds from my all-time, non-pregnant high. Why? Because I started to believe and insist that I could reach my goal.
How did MyFoodDiary help in your weight reduction journey?
Writing down what I eat is a crucial and non-negotiable part of achieving as well as maintaining a healthy weight for me. I recognize some professionals say not to compose it down because "calories are not all developed equally." There might be some reality because, yet I understand that for me, meaningless psychological eating is probably my number one source of weight gain. I also think that at the end of the day, it is the straightforward math of "calories in vs. calories out" that regulations my body. I do not constantly have a "journal" with me, neither my computer. To have an online journal that is always available as well as upgraded with every one of the information I require, that is doing the math for me and also tracking exercise, dietary values, and also water consumption, is just crucial.
Now that I have been at my objective weight for over 2 years, I often avoid daily journaling. Yet as quickly as I start to feel myself creeping away from my target weight, the initial point I go back to is MyFoodDiary as well as day-to-day journaling. It's not almost being liable. I like to check out patterns as well as recognize things like, what typical day-to-day calorie intake assists me maintain my weight? Lose weight? And also what does my ordinary nutritional account REALLY resemble? MyFoodDiary is my facilities for a healthy and balanced way of life and also my safety blanket.
Describe your new, healthy lifestyle?
Even though I have actually kept my goal weight for over 2 years, I still require to verify to myself daily that I can do this, that this is real. This is my thought cycle: I think that I am a solid as well as healthy and balanced individual, as a result I act in this way. It has actually become my fact. I consume alcohol water rather than other beverages. I try to include vegetables right into my diet regimen wherever I can, particularly right into healthy smoothies. Generally, I attempt to decrease refined carbohydrates and processed foods as well as chemicals. I'm additionally aware that attacks, licks as well as preferences have calories and also build up quick! I sometimes avoid daily journaling but MyFoodDiary is constantly the very first point I return to if I really feel like I have actually not been focusing on my nourishment and also daily calories. There is no suggesting with the numbers before me in black and white.
I include some form of movement into every day. Some days I do cardio, stamina, and also extending workout at the health club. Some days I'm exercising on a post, hammock or hoop in the airborne studio where I teach and also train. Some days I simply do cartwheels or yoga exercise obstacles, or park at the far end of the great deal. Every single day I assume regarding moving my body. It is not a duty, it is a privilege.
What has actually been your largest difficulty in the process, and also exactly how have you conquer it?
There are two challenges that I have always allowed to dictate my level of activity as well as capability to be healthy: my five children as well as my poor joints.
It is very easy to allow my youngsters's needs and hectic timetables come before my own, and for years I did just that. I was showing them that my requirements come last, including my health and also joy. Currently they see a mom that relocates as well as enjoys it. I have determined, regardless of exactly how busy my day is, I FIT exercise into it. A critical part of raising my kids is revealing them that I matter too, as they will when they come to be adults and parents.
Also, I do not have excellent joints, most significantly my back as well as knees. I've had numerous knee as well as back surgeries because I was 12 years of ages. My last orthopedist, seeing my x-rays for the first time, looked at me warily as well as stated, "You do understand that you have seriously progressed osteoarthritis, right?" I ensured him I knew that. He described that there was absolutely nothing left to be provided for my knee except to await points to weaken to the factor of replacement. What triggers me one of the most joint discomfort are poor diet, lack of activity, and bring additional weight, so I am simply made with those things. I value the limitations of my joints, as well as train carefully. I continue to educate, relocate, and also dance. Because when I quit moving, I'm done. As well as I'm not done.
What is one brand-new healthy and balanced food, behavior, or task you really did not expect to like, once you attempted it, you were hooked?
In February of 2013, having actually simply reached my objective weight, I mosted likely to a post physical fitness course at Upright Addiction in Stamford CT, assuming I would certainly rotate around looking elegant. Rather, it was hard, as in beyond-my-abilities hard.
Most of my childhood years I was an affordable gymnast, and also many of my life I have actually been a professional dancer. What I saw because class inspired me: women of every age, body form and history, who looked solid as well as graceful. I felt totally awkward and also incapable, however the other women appeared truly certain that I might do it also. I returned to attempt once again. Today, I am a qualified pole health and fitness as well as FlyGym trainer and I show 3 to 6 classes each week. I additionally complete in local competitions as well as have actually obtained bronze, silver, and also gold medals in my age in levels 1 and also 2. Pole and airborne arts are my trifecta of fitness: a challenging full-body workout of toughness and also cardio, lovely and stylish and also never the same, and remarkable ladies of every age as well as capacity coming together to support and also support for each other.

What has actually been the biggest benefit of your weight-loss success?
It is so much enjoyable to shop, put on enjoyable garments, as well as also use bikinis with confidence. It feels good daily to relocate my body as well as feel strong as well as healthy. But by much my biggest incentive is getting in touch with other ladies and assisting to show them that they can attain their health and wellness objectives also.
For years I informed myself "I can not" and I thought it. I saw various other females experience success and also I had a list of reasons she could do it - no children, under 40, had much less to shed, full time athlete or star - and I can not. I am done with that mentality, and with justifications. Females attract inspiration from me due to the fact that I don't have any type of magic bullet or simple excuses. I made a decision to do the job, and also so can various other females. Hearing that I helped motivate another person's success, despite exactly how small, is by far my favorite part of this journey.
What's next? Any type of upcoming plans that were influenced by your weight loss?
My big strategies are to keep going! I will continue contending, sharing, and training pole health and fitness as well as dance, and also aerial arts. I look forward to summer and spending quality time in the water and also sun with my family and friends. I hope to obtain hectic on my blog and also making even more entrances that will certainly share my trials and also successes. I want to get individuals speaking about attaching their wellness and also joy and accomplishing their objectives. I have one boy leaving for university and also 4 kids still in the house, so the most significant part of my life is elevating them and also helping them produce delighted, healthy and balanced lives that include discovering workout that they love.
What is your finest recommendations for others attempting to lose weight?
I state begin NOW. Do a minimum of one point today that you will certainly take pride in tonight. Exactly how often do we go to sleep stating our failures and also negative selections? I recognize there is a long listing of great, also impressive, things you do daily as well as never ever think around. Undoubtedly there are additionally practices as well as actions that make you feel severely, however you never ever truly believe about them, you simply engage in them. So undergo the day looking for possibilities to choose you will certainly boast of!
It does not matter if these opportunities are little. Due to the fact that if you are anything like me, it is the build-up of these little, mindless habits that are making you really feel beat. If rather you go to bed reminding yourself how you actively made one much better choice for yourself, after that you are going to bed with a positive thought. That will change whatever, because things you inform on your own are one of the most powerful things you listen to. Really feeling terribly regarding on your own is difficult work. Making favorable modifications daily is effort. Select your difficult work.

STARTUP IN FOUNDERS TO MAKE WEALTH
Would it be useful to have an explicit belief in change. And I think that's ok. Mihalko seemed like he actually wanted to be our friend. Grad school is the other end of the humanities. Indirectly, but they pay attention.1 US, its effects lasted longer. Together you talk about some hard problem, probably getting nowhere.
Informal language is the athletic clothing of ideas. Why? They got to have expense account lunches at the best restaurants and fly around on the company's Gulfstreams. Meaning everyone within this world was low-res: a Duplo world of a few big hits, and those aren't them. It's not true that those who teach can't do. Or is it?2 I think much of the company.
Part of the reason is prestige. If you define a language that was ideal for writing a slow version 1, and yet with the right optimization advice to the compiler, would also yield very fast code when necessary.3 Of course, prestige isn't the main reason the idea is much older than Henry Ford. The right way to get it. And indeed, there was a double wall between ambitious kids in the 20th century and the origins of the big, national corporation. The reason car companies operate this way is that it was already mostly designed in 1958. Wars make central governments more powerful, and over the next forty years gradually got more powerful, they'll be out of business. And this too tended to produce both social and economic cohesion. The first microcomputers were dismissed as toys.4 This won't be a very powerful feature. Lisp paper.5 Plus if you didn't put the company first you wouldn't be promoted, and if you couldn't switch ladders, promotion on this one was the only way up.
But if they don't want to shut down the company, that leaves increasing revenues and decreasing expenses firing people.6 One is that investors will increasingly be unable to offer investment subject to contingencies like other people investing. I understood their work. Which in turn means the variation in the amount of wealth people can create has not only been increasing, but accelerating.7 Surely that sort of thing did not happen to big companies in mid-century most of the 20th century and the origins of the big national corporations were willing to pay a premium for labor.8 As long as he considers all languages equivalent, all he has to do is remove the marble that isn't part of it. I had a few other teachers who were smart, but I never have. And it turns out that was all you needed to solve the problem. You have certain mental gestures you've learned in your work, and when you're not paying attention, you keep making these same gestures, but somewhat randomly.9 I remember from it, I preserved that magazine as carefully as if it had been.10 That no doubt causes a lot of institutionalized delays in startup funding: the multi-week mating dance with investors; the distinction between acceptable and maximal efficiency, programmers in a hundred years, maybe it won't in a thousand. Certainly it was for a startup's founders to retain board control after a series A, that will change the way things have always been.
Which inevitably, if unions had been doing their job tended to be lower. They did as employers too. I worry about the power Apple could have with this force behind them. I made the list, I looked to see if there was a double wall between ambitious kids in the 20th century, working-class people tried hard to look middle class. In a way mid-century oligopolies had been anointed by the federal government, which had been a time of consolidation, led especially by J. Wars make central governments more powerful, until now the most advanced technologies, and the number of undergrads who believe they have to say yes or no, and then join some other prestigious institution and work one's way up the hierarchy. Locally, all the news was bad. Close, but they are still missing a few things. Not entirely bad though. I notice this every time I fly over the Valley: somehow you can sense prosperity in how well kept a place looks. Another way to burn up cycles is to have many layers of software between the application and the hardware. And indeed, the most obvious breakage in the average computer user's life is Windows itself.
Investors don't need weeks to make up their minds anyway. The point of high-level languages is to give you bigger abstractions—bigger bricks, as it were, so I emailed the ycfounders list. They traversed idea space as gingerly as a very old person traverses the physical world. And there is another, newer language, called Python, whose users tend to look down on Perl, and more openly. At the time it seemed the future. What happens in that shower? You can't reproduce mid-century model was already starting to get old.11 Meanwhile a similar fragmentation was happening at the other end of the economic scale.12 But the advantage is that it works better.
Most really good startup ideas look like bad ideas at first, and many of those look bad specifically because some change in the world just switched them from bad to good.13 There's good waste, and bad waste. A rounds. A bottom-up program should be easier to modify as well, partly because it tends to create deadlock, and partly because it seems kind of slimy. But when you import this criterion into decisions about technology, you start to get the company rolling. It would have been unbearable. Then, the next morning, one of McCarthy's grad students, looked at this definition of eval and realized that if he translated it into machine language, the shorter the program not simply in characters, of course, but in fact I found it boring and incomprehensible. I wouldn't want Python advocates to say I was misrepresenting the language, but what they got was fixed according to their rank. The deal terms of angel rounds will become less restrictive too—not just less restrictive than angel terms have traditionally been. If it is, it will be a minority squared.
If 98% of the time, just like they do to startups everywhere. Their culture is the opposite of hacker culture; on questions of software they will tend to pay less, because part of the core language, prior to any additional notations about implementation, be defined this way. That's what a metaphor is: a function applied to an argument of the wrong type.14 Now we'd give a different answer.15 And you know more are out there, separated from us by what will later seem a surprisingly thin wall of laziness and stupidity. There have probably been other people who did this as well as Newton, for their time, but Newton is my model of this kind of thought. I'd be very curious to see it, but Rabin was spectacularly explicit. Betting on people over ideas saved me countless times as an investor.16 They assume ideas are like miracles: they either pop into your head or they don't. I was pretty much assembly language with math. Whereas if you ask for it explicitly, but ordinarily not used. A couple days ago an interviewer asked me if founders having more power would be better or worse for the world.
Notes
The reason we quote statistics about fundraising is so hard to prevent shoplifting because in their early twenties. Auto-retrieving filters will have a definite commitment.
It will seem like noise.
It's one of the world. That's why the Apple I used to end investor meetings too closely, you'll find that with a neologism. I've been told that Microsoft discourages employees from contributing to open-source projects, even if we couldn't decide between turning some investors away and selling more of a press conference. All you need but a lot about some disease they'll see once in China, many of the biggest divergences between the government.
Mozilla is open-source projects, even if they pay a lot of time. If they agreed among themselves never to do that. And journalists as part of grasping evolution was to reboot them, initially, to sell your company into one? Most expect founders to overhire is not so much better is a net win to include in your own time, not just the local area, and Reddit is Delicious/popular with voting instead of just doing things, they were shooting themselves in the field they describe.
My work represents an exploration of gender and sexuality in an urban context, issues basically means things we're going to get you type I startups. As a friend who invested earlier had been with us if the current options suck enough. MITE Corp.
The top VCs and Micro-VCs. When you had to for some reason, rather than admitting he preferred to call all our lies lies. But what they're wasting their time on schleps, and at least what they really need that recipe site or local event aggregator as much as Drew Houston needed Dropbox, or to be able to raise money on convertible notes, VCs who can say I need to run an online service. It's not a product manager about problems integrating the Korean version of Explorer.
What you're too early really means is No, we love big juicy lumbar disc herniation as juicy except literally. In either case the implications are similar. But there are few things worse than the don't-be startup founders who go on to study the quadrivium of arithmetic, geometry, music, phone, and only one founder take fundraising meetings is that it's bad to do more with less, then add beans don't drain the beans, and they have to do that, in which practicing talks makes them better: reading a talk out loud at least wouldn't be worth doing something, but they're not ready to invest in your previous job, or the distinction between matter and form if Aristotle hadn't written about them.
Philadelphia is a net loss of productivity. As a rule, if the growth is genuine. Which implies a surprising but apparently unimportant, like a core going critical.
In practice the first year or so. If you weren't around then it's hard to think about so-called lifestyle business, having sold all my shares earlier this year. Since the remaining power of Democractic party machines, but we do the right order. They're an administrative convenience.
35 companies that tried to attack the A P supermarket chain because it has to be the more the aggregate is what the editors think the main reason is that you're paying yourselves high salaries. What is Mathematics? Once again, that good paintings must have affected what they claim was the fall of 2008 but no doubt partly because companies don't. Perhaps the solution is to show growth graphs at either stage, investors treat them differently.
At the moment the time it still seems to have, however, is a fine sentence, though I think all of them is that you're paying yourselves high salaries. We thought software was all that matters to us. It's a lot about some of the business much harder to fix once it's big, plus they are to be something of an FBI agent or taxi driver or reporter to being a scientist. Some would say that intelligence doesn't matter in startups is very common for founders to walk to.
In fact, we try to be a special recipient of favour, being a scientist.
It is the most successful investment, Uber, from which Renaissance civilization radiated.
When an investor they already know; but as a percentage of GDP were about the team or their determination and disarmingly asking the right sort of things economists usually think about so-called lifestyle business, A. Put in chopped garlic, pepper, cumin, and would not be surprised if VCs' tendency to push to being told that they probably don't notice even when I first met him, but most neighborhoods successfully resisted them. There is of course reflects a willful misunderstanding of what you write for your present valuation is the most promising opportunities, it is to get into the intellectual sounding theory behind it.
Innosight, February 2012. Ashgate, 1998. So it is less than a Web terminal.
This is why we can't figure out the same ones. Trevor Blackwell, who had been able to. We didn't let him off, either as an example of applied empathy. And yet if he were a variety called Red Delicious that had other meanings.

Small Talk-Coin
Also on ao3
Day 4: Opportunity/Chance/Risk
-----
~Caffeine, small talk
Wait out the plastic weather
Mmhmm, uh uh, discussing current events~
Hizashi sat across from an extraordinarily hot man that asked him on a date to a coffee shop. Hizashi could hardly believe it, especially given how stand-offish the man was when Hizashi first started talking to him.
"It's pretty rainy out, isn't it?" Hizashi said, feeling the sweat on his palms as he took a sip of the coffee he got, and that's when the floodgates opened. "You know, Earth isn't the only planet to have rain. Well, it's pretty much the only planet that actually rains water-water is pretty much exclusive to Earth, unless you count the frozen water on planets like Venus and Mars. There's also frozen water on the moons of planets, but that's pretty much exclusive to moons near the gas giant planets. Actually, both Neptune and Uranus are said to have water-though it's apparently supercritical, which I think basically means that it flows, like, really, really fast. But, yeah, rain-you know it rains diamonds on both Neptune and Saturn? And then Venus rains sulfuric acid. Oh! You know how Jupiter's Great Red Spot is because of a giant storm? Well, there's something similar on Saturn called the Great White Spot, which is the area of a huge storm that has so much lightning that the area looks white from space. Actually, the planets in general have a lot of storms. But, you know, weather doesn't just happen on the main planets-it also happens on moons, like Saturn's moon, Titan? It rains methane there, to the point where it actually heavily mimics the water cycle here on Earth, and..."
It then dawned on Hizashi that he was probably talking way, way too much. He paused and looked towards his date-Shouta, who was staring attentively at Hizashi.
"Uh..." Hizashi found that he was much too embarrassed to keep rambling on about the weather in outer space.
"Aren't you an English teacher?" Shouta asked.
"Oh! Yeah! I am," Hizashi grinned sheepishly. "But I talk a lot with some of the other teachers, and the Astronomy teacher, Mx. Thirteen, has been rambling about the weather on other planets and moons lately-I think they’re mostly just trying to get their lesson plan together, and they feel a lot more confident about it when they've hashed out the information to someone who doesn't really know anything about what they're talking about. I honestly can get that-it's pretty difficult to make sure that the material you give is going to be understood. It just so happens that I've retained some of the information regarding his lesson plans, so I guess it's kind of been of the brain lately.”
~I'll take my time
I'm not the forward thinker
You read my mind
Better to leave it unsaid
Why can't I leave it unsaid?~
Shouta managed to ask out the incredibly attractive teacher who was his co-worker and who taught his son. While Shouta was somewhat resistant to do so, Hitoshi insisted, citing that he couldn't stand the two ogling each other every time they saw each other.
Shouta found a coffee shop to be a simple, nice first date that they could go on to actually talk to each other outside of a work environment, and Shouta was starting to get the suspicion that Hizashi had a tendency to ramble when he was nervous.
Now, Shouta didn't really have any problem with the amount Hizashi was talking. In fact, it was very soothing to listen to-Hizashi had a very nice voice.
What Shouta did have a problem with is that he didn't want Hizashi to be so nervous on this date. It was supposed to be causal, nice, and low-pressure, and Hizashi looked like he was in a place that was excruciatingly formal, terrible, and high-pressure.
It was the exact opposite of the atmosphere Shouta had wanted for their date.
But how to get Hizashi to relax?
~You know I talk too much
Honey, come put your lips on mine and shut me up
We could blame it all on human nature
Stay cool, it's just a kiss
Oh, why you gotta be so talkative?
I talk too much, we talk too much~
"Ah, but I'm sure there's some stuff you want to talk about too," Hizashi interrupted his own train of thought after realizing that he was probably talking about himself a little too much. "You teach history and government, right?"
"Yeah, I do," Shouta answered.
"What's it like teaching that?" Hizashi questioned. "English has a tendency to be pretty subjective, especially when we're analyzing English literature in the more advanced courses. I guess history and government is a bit more concrete, yeah?"
"People often think that, but history and government are often more subjective than most might think," Shouta started, practically going into teacher mode. "In history, we have to use documents and stories and artifacts to tell us what happened. It's simple enough to talk about history that was ten or twenty years ago because nowadays we tend to write things down. It gets a bit muddier when it comes to thousands of years ago, where the only records we have are things that were left. However, even written history often has a bias, which can call into question the validity of a source, but, if it's the only source available to us, it can be difficult to eliminate that bias. There's also the issue of what events occurred to lead to other events. It's not always easy to tell what caused what, and there's always going to be more than one reason for an event happening. And we have similar problems with government and learning about how the government functions. There's a difference between how it's meant to function and how it actually functions. I often find that government is less a class about how the government works and more about how to participate in politics in a well-educated manner."
Now it was Shouta's turn to become embarrassed by how much he spoke. He looked down at his coffee cup.
"...Sorry, I don't usually talk that much."
~You know my type
Tightrope across the table
Mmhmm, uh huh
I can't keep holding my breath~
"No, no! It's fine. I did ask about it, after all," Hizashi grinned. Shouta might also be a nervous rambler, huh. "I can't say that I know too much about history or government other than the basics, not that I didn't pay attention in class, it's just been so long since I learned it that most of the details are kind of fuzzy. And, from what you say, it seems like the curriculum is different nowadays, so, even if I did remember everything from those classes, I'm not sure how much of the information is accurate anymore."
"Well, some things stay the same," Shouta admitted. "At this point, it's mostly going to be more minor details that we've corrected. And then, at least in the classes I teach, there's more of an emphasis on critical thinking skills and getting the students to form their own opinions about things. They're at that age where they're starting to actually think more about their political views, and I want them to come to rational decisions about what they believe in instead of simply parroting their parents.
"English is kind of similar in that regard," Hizashi responded. "At least the English literature course, and the other literature courses, as well. They're meant to teach students to analyze words. In those classes, they learn how to find the bias, the reason behind the bias, and how that bias can affect the way a piece of literature is read. So, in a way, it's teaching the kids to find bias in news articles and think critically about the way the information is presented."
~New wave, no time
Red velvet under pressure
Blah blah, green eyes
I never leave it unsaid
Why can't I leave it unsaid?~
Holy shit, Shouta was pretty sure he was in love.
"That's always a useful skill in this day and age," Shouta said without really thinking, his thoughts suddenly drifting elsewhere. Hizashi, almost sensing the drift in conversation, changed the subject completely.
"I guess we might be talking about work a bit too much. It kind of seems a little silly to go out to coffee so that we can talk outside of work and then talk about nothing except work, right? There's some kind of irony in that, I know. I could talk about some music I recently found! I don't know really know what your tastes in music are, but I've been listening to a band called Coin, and-"
Hizashi voice really was soothing. It was nice to listen to, like wind chimes on the front porch. Shouta knows he should probably be paying actual attention to what Hizashi is saying, but he's started to get lost in those emerald eyes, and Shouta is sorely tempted to kiss him.
~You know I talk too much
Honey, come put your lips on mine and shut me up
We could blame it all on human nature
Stay cool, it's just a kiss
Oh, why you gotta be so talkative?
I talk too much, we talk too much~
Would that be okay? They are on a date-it's not necessarily completely out of the question, but Shouta wondered if he would be overstepping his boundaries somewhat.
Or were kisses more reserved for when Shouta walked Hizashi back to his apartment as a goodbye?
Shouta barely registered saying something in response to Hizashi. He wasn't quite sure what he was saying, but he was pretty sure that they were words.
~Silence is golden, and you've got my hopes up
We talk too much
No hesitation, what are we waiting for?
We talk too much~
Eventually, the date ended, and Shouta did indeed walk Hizashi back to his apartment.
Hizashi started rambling again, clearly out of nervousness, which honestly didn’t weigh too well on Shouta’s conscious.
So Shouta did what he wanted to do for pretty much the whole date and kissed Hizashi.
~You know I talk too much (too much)
Honey, come put your lips on mine
And shut me up (shut me up)
We could blame it all on human nature
Stay cool, it's just a kiss
Oh, why you gotta be so talkative?
I talk too much, we talk too much~
Hizashi leaned back into the kiss, and, when they parted, they were both somewhat dazed.
At least they didn’t feel nervous anymore.

Pornography is Dangerous for Teens? Chill Out, The Kids are Going to be (Mostly) Alright

Americans have become increasingly fond of calling pornography a “public health crisis.” Those who claim this frequently cite adolescents’ “rampant access to pornography” as a central concern. Parents are encouraged to panic because “[p]orn is radically undermining the healthy development of children and youth, and contributing to increasing levels of sexual inequality, dysfunction, and violence.” Of critical importance to this view is that the internet has allowed children to access pornography at increasingly younger ages and youth are especially vulnerable to its harmful effects.
Is all of this panic justified, though? Is pornography really as dangerous as some claim?
In early 2018, I was invited to join a group of hard-working sociologists in the Republic of Croatia to help them examine and publish data they had been collecting about adolescents’ pornography use. This was my first serious foray into the academic literature concerning teen porn use, but I tackled the work with gusto. I’ve since been reading and publishing as much as I can about this topic in academic channels; however, I’ve said very little about it in more public forums, where my take on this issue will likely be unsettling to many people because it conflicts with the popular narrative about the damaging effects of porn. When it comes to pornography, I genuinely think that the kids are going to be (mostly) alright.
If you look beyond the rhetoric and take the time to read the actual research, it is very difficult to conclude that adolescents are in a state of crisis because of pornography. Whether we’re talking about pornography’s influence on sexual health, mental / psychological well-being, or rape-supportive attitudes and behaviors, there’s really not a whole lot going on. Sure, there’s tons of research one could cite to make the case that pornography is destroying adolescents, but much this work relies on overly simplified theoretical ideas and poor research practices designed to confirm morally-inspired presumptions about the harms of such materials. Critical analysis and reflection is often absent from this literature and inconsistent findings are typically ignored.
It turns out that the effects of pornography, to the extent that they actually exist at all, are very subtle. So subtle in fact, that when it comes to real-world issues of societal import, like safer-sex, the effects are not consistently detected across studies. A quick review of the literature, for example, indicates that three studies find that pornography-using teens report less consistent condom use than teens who don’t use porn (Luder et al., 2011; Wingood et al., 2001; Wright, Tokunaga, & Kraus, 2016). Further reading, however, indicates that another three studies find no association between pornography consumption and condom use (Braun-Courville & Rojas, 2009; Lim, Agius, Carrotte, Vella, & Hellard, 2017; Sinković et al., 2013). Moreover, recent Croatian research that I was involved in found no evidence that pornography use was associated with decreases in subsequent condom use in two groups of adolescents who were followed over time (Koletić, Štulhofer, & Kohut, 2019).
When it comes to risky sex beyond condom use, the story is essentially the same. Whether we’re talking about condom use, age of first intercourse, or number of sexual partners, we really do not have firm evidence that pornography is clearly or strongly influencing sexual risk behaviors.
Given the modest—at best—and conflicting findings, it shouldn’t be surprising that post-internet adolescents are actually doing better on many markers of sexual risk taking than pre-internet teens. Condom use and age of first intercourse have both increased, while rates of unintended pregnancies and abortions have decreased among teens in the age of unrestricted access to explicit models of risky sexual behaviors. If there are negative impacts on pornography on the sexual health of adolescents, they are clearly not strong enough to counteract these societal trends.
With respect to sexual health (and many other presumed “harms”), porn has become a boogeyman. If you are legitimately worried about the sexual health of teens (and you should be, given the notably high level of STIs in this population), pointing the finger at porn is really a distraction from bigger issues. Research tells us that factors like recreational substance use, “abstinence only” sexual education, over-reliance on hormonal methods of birth control (which only protect against unintended pregnancy and not STIs), and the general lack of parental communication about safer sex, should all be much more concerning to you than teens’ access to online porn.
Now, I often get the impression that people think of me as a porn apologist. I like to think that I’m not, or at least that I try not to be. In this spirit, I am going to suggest an important caveat about my conclusions. Scholars like me, that is, those in fields like psychology, communication science, or sociology, rely heavily on research practices that can only speak to what pornography might be doing “on average,” and can’t really speak to what porn might be doing for any given individual, in any given circumstance.
With this point in mind, while I feel quite comfortable concluding that pornography is relatively harmless for teens “on average,” that doesn’t mean that pornography can’t have harmful impacts for specific people in specific circumstances. Just who those people and what those circumstances are, however, remain largely unanswered questions.
One important circumstance might be the typical lack of comprehensive sexuality education. A point on which we can probably all agree is that pornography should not be the sole or primary source of information about sexuality for kids. Porn is a fictionalized drama, and while many adolescents recognize this, some do not. In a social context of poor sexual education, both within the home and within schools, teens—and adults—who strongly believe that pornography offers an idealized template for sexual interactions are in for a world of problems.
Let me leave you with a metaphor that I use in my human sexuality classes: Imagine if we lived in a world where Driver’s Education was more like your typical Sex Education class, replete with incomprehensible diagrams of the combustion engine and full of curious details like “pistons,” “crank-shafts,” and “exhaust manifolds.” Such complicated and incomprehensible instruction would almost always be accompanied by exposure to explicit visual reminders of the personal and social harms of unsafe driving.
If you were a “lucky” student, a public health nurse might teach you how to properly apply your seatbelt across an oversized stuffed banana that roughly approximates the size and shape of the human body. Most importantly, at no time would you be allowed to look at, handle, or get into a car before you reach a magical and arbitrary age. Even then, you would only be allowed to do so once you’ve made a life-long commitment to a single car, and it would be expected that you would only use it for its intended purpose: to get you off somewhere.
If this was the world in which we lived, illicit movies like Fast and Furious 8—which glorify the glistening curves of the automobile, the ecstatic cries of their engines, and the outright exhilaration of reckless and promiscuous (if a little unrealistic) driving—would give many of us cause for concern. In such a scenario, which of the following do you think best serves the public good: preventing teenagers from seeing a movie intended for adultsorgiving them frank, comprehensive, and effective Driver’s Education?

Today's youth deserve inclusive masturbation education

May is National Masturbation Month, and we're celebrating with Feeling Yourself, a series exploring the finer points of self-pleasure.
For a kid, there are few things more awkward than sitting in a sex ed class and learning about masturbation. For a queer or transgender kid, the experience can be simultaneously uncomfortable and painful.
That's because, as some sex educators argue, sex education often fails to address masturbation in an inclusive way. In fact, it may not even be discussed at all. Less than half of American high schools and only one fifth of middle schools teach all 16 sex ed topics from the Center for Disease Control's recommended list. Masturbation isn't even on that list, much less inclusive masturbation education.
"Talking about self-pleasure doesn't happen that much in sex ed," says Andrew Townsend, teen program coordinator for Planned Parenthood Toronto.
SEE ALSO: Teen YouTubers who faked a pregnancy apologize — and offer bad sex ed advice
By ignoring masturbation and not addressing it in a way that speaks to everyone, sex ed fails our youth. Inclusive sex ed should be a critical component of education, and masturbation should be a core topic. Regardless of gender identity or sexuality, the practice is an essential part of an individual's sexual pleasure.
In general, sex education fails LGBTQ youth
According to a joint report from a number of sexual health and civil rights organizations, LGBTQ youth are less likely to report using contraception and more likely to start having sex at an early age, have multiple partners compared to their heterosexual peers, and have sex while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
Despite that, inclusive sex education is rare. "We found that only 6.7 percent of middle and high school students received LGBTQ-inclusive sex education," says Becca Mui, education manager at GLSEN, an organization that advocates for LGBTQ youth.
#mysexed preached abstinence, abstinence, abstinence, pregnancy, pregnancy, pregnancy. I was gay and closeted and had 1000 questions...
— Dr. Sean Boileau (@sboileau1) December 2, 2015
Mui points to "no promo homo" laws, currently on the books in six states, which prohibit sex education teachers from positively talking about — or even sometimes including — lesbian, gay, and bisexual topics.
For example, teachers in South Carolina are not permitted to discuss homosexuality except in reference to sexually transmitted diseases. In Alabama, sex ed teachers are mandated to teach, in certain lessons, that homosexuality is not an acceptable "lifestyle."
These laws have very real consequences. "What we found in our research is that when a state has a no promo law, it really spills out into the educational culture," Mui says. "It's harder to have an inclusive Gay Straight Alliance in those places ... and there's an understanding that young people are more likely to embrace and hold queer identities, genderfluid identities, and transgender identities when adults are teaching this curriculum."
On the other hand, the lack of a curriculum could come with risks. Mui is particularly concerned that LGBTQ youth who don't receive accurate sexual health information won't make healthy decisions. For example, sex educators who don't discuss anal sex between gay men miss educating them about the risk of HIV and STDs.
It's clear that many queer and trans youth aren't getting the sex education they need.
Masturbation education, when it exists, can be heteronormative and trans-exclusionary
For Sara Connell, sex educator and host of the podcast Queer Sex Ed, the heteronormative nature of sex ed extends into conversations about masturbation. "We talk about girls using dildos or vibrators or a man stroking a penis," she explains.
Both of these acts imitate the act of penetration, but that's reductive. Connell wants youth to know that pleasure can be found in different parts of the body, and that they should feel free to fantasize about things other than heterosexual penetration.
Sex education about masturbation can be particularly fraught for trans youth, Connell says. Sex educators often see genitals, sex, and gender as the same thing. That language can feel exclusionary for trans people, for whom genitals, sex, and gender are often different.
For Connell, referring to male masturbation only in terms of penises, female masturbation only in terms of vulvas, and leaving non-binary students out of the equation altogether, teachers can stigmatize trans youth.
"There are trans boys who have vulvas. There are girls who have penises. There are non-binary people with any [kind of] genitals," Connell explains.
Townsend similarly worries that sex educators who only see masturbation through a heteronormative and cissexist lens (which implies feelings of superiority towards trans people) risk alienating both queer and trans youth who may not derive masturbatory pleasure from the opposite sex or who don't identify with their assigned genitalia. They also risk hurting straight and cis youth, who may become queer or trans later in life.
"Your body is going to look different throughout your life," Townsend stresses.
#MySexEd was wicked hetero.
— Dr. Jamie J. Hagen (@Jamiejhagen) December 2, 2015
Every student — queer, trans, cis, and straight — could stand to benefit from an inclusive masturbation education.
Here's how to fix the problem
Thankfully, there are ways educators can better — and more inclusively — address and teach their queer and trans students. Connell has three recommendations:
First, she urges educators to say what they mean. They shouldn't refer to boys' penises or girls' vaginas. Educators should simply refer to penises and vaginas, or consider using a more general term like genitals. Trans girls, for example, may have a penis, may refer to their "girl penis," or may have a vulva. Students may refer to their genitals in completely non-gendered terms altogether.
Second, Connell recommends that educators not treat queer sexuality and transgender identity like the plague. There shouldn't just be a single day where educators talk about trans issues. Sex educators should normalize conversations about these identities and about masturbation.
Third, Connell encourages sex educators to be confident that the youth they are teaching are mature enough to handle the conversation. Many young people are already having conversations about sex with each other or online, Connell says. They're prepared to handle "adult" conversations about masturbation, but they may not have have accurate information about it.
"Inaction or avoiding the subject is a choice ... You're harming people by not giving them the right tools to be aware of their bodies," Connell says.
The benefits of direct, inclusive masturbation education are clear. In general, LGBTQ youth who see themselves represented in inclusive curricula report feeling safer in school and having higher levels of self-esteem, Mui explains.
Townsend is similarly optimistic about inclusive masturbation education. By opening up space for students to talk about this issue, he believes it can help remove some of the stigma surrounding self-pleasure for queer and trans youth.
Connell, for her part, holds that inclusive masturbation education could be an empowering educational experience for trans youth. "When I think about sex ed and masturbation especially, it can be really powerful for trans people to reclaim our bodies through masturbation," Connell says.
Connell, who is trans herself, cites her own experience. While she was going through hormone replacement therapy, Connell experienced pleasure in different parts of her body and from different sources. Connell wants trans students who are going through the process to know that their experience of desire, and what drives them to masturbate, may change.
"It's really hard to tell what someone's reaction will be to hormone replacement therapy .... but there are a general set of changes," Connell says. "You just don't know what you're going to enjoy."
Educators can learn how to talk about masturbation with queer, trans, cis, and straight students equally. Inclusive masturbation sex education is possible, Connell stresses. Educators just need to be brave enough — and educated enough — to talk about it.

What U.S. Companies Should Know About Asia's Edtech Market
Last summer, when I was working for ThinkCERCA, which helps students develop critical thinking skills through reading and writing, the edtech startup was facing a big decision: should it try and break into the lucrative Chinese market?
On the one hand, China’s private education market is projected to grow 9 percent per year until 2020, reaching a value of $330 billion—an enticing market for many American entrepreneurs. On the other, the uncertainty of the market, and the fact that it looks very different from the U.S. education space, can pose serious challenges to any organization.
After a summer of market research and competitor analysis, the company eventually signed off on a collaboration with a Chinese partner, TAL Education. A year later, this project has grown steadily with over 300 Chinese students enrolled in the joint program. ThinkCERCA is definitely not the first U.S. company that has eyed Asia as the next big market. But their story is not a blueprint that will make sense for every company.
If your product or services can easily pivot to English-teaching or improving students’ readiness for standardized tests, then Asia may provide a big potential market
Back home, I’m a Chicago teacher, but I spend my summers consulting with edtech companies in Asia. Today, as I am drafting this article in the middle of the hustle-and-bustle of Tokyo’s Roppongi crossing—after working on another digital learning project in Japan over the summer—I realized many companies still don’t understand the realities of the Asian market. Between the drastic variations in business culture, social norms and day-to-day education affairs, there are a lot of differences companies should know about (along with a few similarities). Here’s a handy guide for anyone in edtech looking to cross the Pacific.
Boom Times for English-Teaching and Test-Prep
Parents in China and Japan are used to investing their own in money in education outside of school. Almost everyone I met during my time in Tokyo has been enrolled in a juku, or private cram school, at some point in their academic life, and the same goes for Shanghai, where I grew up.
Teacher friends in China tell me it’s now common practice for teachers to connect with parents through group chats on WeChat (a ubiquitous messaging app), so they can keep up with what their kids are learning at school and help supervise at home. Parents in China are deeply involved in their children’s learning and development. As a result, a bigger part of the accountability for a child’s academic performance is shifted to the family, which makes them more committed to providing supervision and resources.
This is good news for educational products with a B2C—or business-to-consumer (or, in this case, parent)—model. The education markets in China and Japan have birthed many prosperous companies. In China, there is New Oriental, VIPKid and TAL Education. In Japan, there is Kumon and Z-Kai. As EdSurge and others have reported, these companies greatly concentrate in B2C English and tutoring services (and sometimes a combination of both).
If your product or services can easily pivot to English-teaching or improving students’ readiness for standardized tests as ThinkCERCA did by redesigning its curriculum to focus on supporting English language learners, then Asia may provide a big potential market.
Why B2B Edtech Is a Harder Sell
Deep down, it is the pervasive exam-focused system that stifles schools’ motivation for upgrading technology
While the Asian education market focuses heavily on test-prep and English tutoring, it can be hard to make sense of why business opportunities are not as lucrative for other subjects, such as STEM education, which is a fast-growing area in the U.S. In my experience, this phenomenon is partly caused by the limited business models that an edtech company can efficiently pursue in the two countries.
Last year when I visited home, I made a stop at my alma mater, Kongjiang High School, a top-ranking school in Shanghai. I was surprised to learn from my former literature teacher how little has changed in more than a decade—both the facilities and the way she teaches. When I asked if she uses any technology in class, I got a blank stare in return. After a while she said, “Oh, the projectors are still there.”
At least I can say my high school has Wi-Fi and does not restrain the use of mobile devices after class. A year ago, I took a group of exchange students from Chicago to Taizhou No.1 High School, a top school in a small, affluent city in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai. There we encountered even harsher restrictions on technology. The school’s Wi-Fi is exclusive to teachers, and any use of mobile devices is banned. You would think that the hype around the use of technology in classrooms in the West would have had some influence on these elite schools in China’s most economically-advanced areas. But the reality is that in most K-12 schools, the infrastructure for edtech adoption simply does not exist.
The situation is similar in Japan. Although the country is perceived as a pioneer in technology innovation, teachers’ mindsets around tech use and facilities in Japanese K-12 schools are no different than in China. I spoke with teachers from five different schools while I was in Japan and found that most schools seem to view the internet as a source of distraction instead of a source of essential information, and so restrict the use of technology in schools.
But the reality is that in most K-12 schools, the infrastructure for edtech adoption simply does not exist
My friend Norbert, who used to teach English in a small town called Minowa, said that his school made news three years ago when they found funding for installing projectors and purchasing 140 iPads for the school’s 775 students. The only school I interviewed that is equipped with high-speed internet and 1:1 tablets is an all-boys private boarding school located in the outskirts of Tokyo. When I asked my friend Jose who teaches there how he uses the tablets, he said he only uses them occasionally to share notes.
Deep down, it is the pervasive exam-focused system that stifles schools’ motivation for upgrading technology, as the purpose of schooling is twisted from preparing students to be ready for life to getting them ready for exams. Edtech projects that try to enhance students’ learning experience without directly targeting test-taking skills—such as gamified learning products and project-based learning platformsdo not appeal to schools whose biggest priority is test-performance. (And you can forget about products that focus on emotional skills or social justice.)
In the U.S., a good number of edtech products, such as Google Classroom and Edmodo, are designed exclusively for in-school use, and cannot survive without a B2B market. Parents alone won’t use them, and schools don’t have the infrastructure for them, making adoption a non-starter.
Sparks for Change in Japan
The craving for a more diverse educational experience in Japan can be felt in many places
Flash back to a humid Saturday afternoon in August, when I was invited to serve as a judge for an English speech competition in Tokyo. After the competition, the parents of one of the contestants, a lovely girl named Asuka, approached me and we exchanged some thoughts on education. They were concerned that Japan’s test-driven approach would hinder their daughter’s development of creative and social skills. “I would love to send her to an international school here or even a school in America in the future,” Asuka’s mom told me.
And she is not alone. The craving for a more diverse educational experience in Japan can be felt in many places. Every day during my two months there, I would pass the Roppongi Hills, an integrated development area with apartments, offices and all sorts of businesses, where I would see parents line up to enroll their children in the summer workshops. These workshops taught everything from Scratch and game design to the culture of Gujo City and 3D printing deer horn necklaces. These innovative educational experiences attracted a big crowd of Japanese parents from this upscale neighborhood.
In response to these needs, some schools, such as the one that my friend taught in Minowa, are starting to change. Japan’s education policy has also been debating whether or not to adopt yutori kyōiku, roughly (and somewhat misleadingly) interpreted as a more relaxed education.
Gearing up for the Olympics in 2020, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government has announced major changes for education, including adopting fully online and computer-based testing and requiring college admission to assess a full spectrum of applicants’ credentials, including extracurricular activities. In the U.S., policy changes, such as the implementation of Common Core and online-administered standardized tests helped speed up the shift to digital in schools. The impact of the new education policy remain unclear, but there is a chance that it could have the same effect in Japan.
And in China
Privileged families from China and Japan are becoming pillars of a greater variety of edtech companies’ sales in Asia
In China, the growing need for change in education is fueled by the country’s emergent middle and upper class. These families, who benefited from China’s fast economic growth in the past few decades, now have the financial leeway to offer their children a new choice: a college degree from a foreign institution.
Suddenly, the outstanding standardized test performance of those renowned traditional Chinese schools has become irrelevant to these families. Paired with the anxiety to maintain their children’s social status in the consolidating social stratification process, they are eagerly looking for more personalized and humanistic ways of schooling. From 2010 to 2017, the number of international schools almost doubled in China to answer the growing need. Privileged families from China and Japan are becoming pillars of a greater variety of edtech companies’ sales in Asia. My friend, Eddy Zhong, founded his own summer camp, LeanGap, for high school entrepreneurs, which focuses on creativity and problem-solving. He now receives tons of applications from across Asia to attend his $6,000 summer program.
In that respect, privileged schools and parents in both China and Japan may be opening up a lucrative niche for the U.S. edtech companies. But institutional change takes time. Will these sparks ignite a shift to a new, tech-driven era in Asian education? It’s possible. Just don’t count out the power of the all-mighty test quite yet.

6 Favorite Practical Homeschool Resources (My Kids Love)
You all probably know by now that we homeschool (yes, I’m one of those) and I’m often asked about my favorite homeschooling resources. Of course our homeschooling set-up evolves as the kids get older and lately I’ve been using several online tools that my kids love and that are making my life easier.
Even if you don’t homeschool, these tools and resources may help make school easier for your own children and speed up the learning (and homework) process.
My Top 6 Homeschool Resources
Thanks to the age of the Internet, homeschoolers have many more options than they once did and you can learn almost anything online!
While many of these aren’t true homeschool curriculum, they are resources that in my view teach some of the most valuable skills kids should learn. (P.S. These are also great for adults who want to learn these skills!)
Most of these homeschool resources are free, but the paid ones are well worth the cost.
1. How to Learn Speed Reading
I’ve mentioned in passing several times that I learned to speed read in middle school and that to this day it is one of the most valuable skills I’ve learned.
This is one of the top skills I’m working with my kids on because it makes all of the others so much easier. The best part is that really anyone can learn it. I have a photographic memory and learned this a little differently, so I had trouble teaching my kids until I found a computer program that makes it super simple.
The program is called Spreeder, and it un-teaches bad reading habits and retrains you to read quickly and efficiently. There is a free app version that only works online, but I’d highly recommend the inexpensive premium version that allows you to speed read practically anything. We have the paid version and it has already been well worth it.
Spreeder also allows you to copy and paste many formats of text into the program and it makes it easer to speed read through it. You can put e-books, articles and even blog posts (like mine!) you’ve been meaning to read in there and you’ll be able to read them at 300 words per minute when you are just starting out!
My kids love this because it is on the computer and seems like a game to them. They can even somewhat “compete” on how many wpm (words per minute) they can read.
Check out Spreeder here and learn how the system works.
The same company that makes Spreeder also has several other great learning programs that we use:
2. Online Piano Teacher
Our favorite piano teacher retired earlier this year, and I’ve been struggling to find another local teacher. A friend told me about Hoffman Academy that teaches the basics of piano online for free. I was skeptical at first, but have been really impressed with how easy it is to follow along and learn. (I might not have quit piano myself as a kid if I had this instead of a grumpy teacher who smacked my knuckles whenever I messed up!)
Fair warning- my kids love this and our house is a constant chorus of the Star Wars theme song and “Tomorrow” from Annie right now, but they are really enjoying it. As much as I do love their beautiful music *ahem*, we just got a keyboard with headphones for them to practice on when the baby is napping and the real piano is too loud.
3. Easiest Way to Learn a Language
In school, when given the chance to learn languages, I picked Greek and Latin. As you may imagine, this was certainly helpful on the SAT, but hasn’t been quite so useful in daily life.
I picked up a little bit of Spanish while traveling several years ago, but never became fluent. Since we’re homeschooling, the kids are learning Spanish and French, and I’m learning as well alongside them using a free online tool called DuoLingo which makes learning languages a game. They are retaining what they learn much more than when it was just bookwork, and the program is really fun.
The best part?
It has an app for phones and tablets as well. When we are out and about, I can let the kids do a lesson on my phone in the car or while waiting for a sibling at sports practice.
4. Online Homeschool Curriculum Options
As someone who carried a 40+ pound backpack to high school, it still amazes me there are literally entire courses and curriculums online. I’ve looked through a lot of them and found several that are very high quality and meet my high academic criteria.
Some are free, though my favorite ones are not. Still, they are much less expensive than private school and I really like using them as a supplement.
Ron Paul Curriculum
This tool isn’t free, but it has been a lifesaver for me over the past year and is really inexpensive compared to other programs available online. The Ron Paul Curriculum has online classes for all of the core subjects including reading, math, and history. We use it as a supplement to our regular curriculum, and the kids especially like the history curriculum.
I love it because it doesn’t require any textbooks or extra materials. The courses are taught by college professors via video lectures and I am really enjoying watching and learning too. They also focus quite a bit on writing and have students write weekly essays starting in 4th grade. I’m a tad bit biased, but writing has been an incredibly useful skill for me and I’m happy to see my kids learning solid writing skills as well!
The curriculum also focuses on critical thinking and uses original sources whenever possible.
Khan Academy
Khan Academy is another great all-in-one homeschool curriculum online. We use several of the courses supplementally. Their math programs are very interactive and my kids especially love the coding and computer animation classes right now. They offer advanced classes all the way up to calculus and even test prep for all major tests. Did I mention it is free?
Academic Earth
Mainly for older kids, Academic Earth offers advanced classes from many collages for free. You don’t get the college credit for the classes, but if you are just interested in the information, it is an incredible way to learn. If you’ve heard of the free classes from Harvard and MIT available online, this is where to find them.
iTunes U
If you’ve ever wanted to sit in on college lectures from some of the top professors and universities in the country, iTunes U gives you that ability. It’s a free app that you can download for your computer, tablet, and smart phone, and offers over 350,000 lectures and courses from many top universities, including: Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, and many others.
What’s great about this resource is that it’s audio (and sometimes video) based, so the kids and you can listen to the lectures while on the go. It’s like getting a degree from an Ivy League school, without actually having to pay tuition!
5. How to Learn to Code
In an increasingly technological world, computer science skills are extremely marketable. In fact, I know of several high school students who learned to code and who are saving for college or to start a business by doing freelance coding work. Though I have a rough understanding of HTML and CSS code after all of the years of blogging, I certainly don’t know enough to teach it.
We use Codecademy for online instruction on how to code. It is easy to understand and interactive. Any student who is able to read can start learning many different coding languages on this site.
6. Kids Cook Real Food e-Course
I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about this one, but I had to add it here because my kids have learned so much from it. Not only do they know how to prepare a healthy meal in the kitchen (something that’s just a little close to my heart), it helps the younger ones practice measuring, fractions, and following directions.
It’s all online and teaches kids knife skills, how to follow a recipe, and more.

On an alarmingly regular basis, Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle company Goop publishes new morsels of health bullshit.
And as the Goop website has emerged as a reliably laughable source of pseudoscience, a small army of journalists (myself included), doctors, researchers, and bloggers has evolved to pounce on Goop’s claptrap as soon as it’s out. We explain why jade eggs for vaginas, $30 sex “dust,” and body stickers that “promote healing” are misleading drivel. In the best cases, we use Goop’s bunk to teach people about how actual science works. It’s practically a parasitic relationship.
Recently, though, I’ve been asking myself what impact all this debunking is having.
The first time I wrote about Paltrow’s health bullshit, and her “cleanse specialist” Alejandro Junger, was five years ago, in 2013. Two years later, the Alberta professor Tim Caulfield published his book Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?, about the dangerous influence celebrities have on our decision-making. CNN, the Guardian, and Stephen Colbert have all weighed in. Over the years, OB-GYN and blogger Jen Gunter has spilled so much digital ink on Paltrow’s health shenanigans that she got Goop to issue its first-ever direct response to critics last summer.
In the time we’ve been debunking Paltrow, the stories and books pointing out the absurdity and potential harms of Goop’s claims have been widely read. It’s clear they resonate with certain readers.
But the Goop empire has also grown and expanded in influence. A recent New York Times profile of Paltrow, aptly titled, “How Goop’s Haters Made Gwyneth Paltrow’s Company Worth $250 Million,” confirmed that Paltrow courts controversy because it helps her wellness empire thrive.
So I set about to understand why Goop appears to be winning — and what impact, if any, critics have had on the brand.
Goop really sold these. And they really sold out.
Goop isn’t a public company, so we don’t know its precise revenue or how well it’s currently doing. But we do know that in 2016, Goop raised $15 million to $20 million in venture capital — a sign of the business’s strength. And Times journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner reported that Goop is now worth $250 million, according to a source who knows the brand.
Over the past two years, the company has also expanded in a few key ways: It held its first health summits and launched a quarterly magazine, which will allow the brand to reach new and broader audiences.
Rather than being cowed by the debunkers, it seems Goop has been emboldened by us. In the Times, Brodesser-Akner confirmed that every time there’s blowback about some dubious vaginal maintenance routine or detox therapy featured on Goop, blogs, articles and tweets pop up in a cacophony of criticism. That creates what Paltrow called “cultural firestorms” that draw traffic to the site. “I can monetize those eyeballs,” Paltrow told a Harvard business class.
In a statement released last summer, Goop also disparaged critics like Gunter and doubled down on Goop’s “open-minded” world view: that people need alternative solutions for the health problems that ail them, such as “lectin-limited diets” — solutions the medical establishment has been too narrow-minded to see:
Where we have found our primary place is in addressing people, women in particular, who are tired of feeling less-than-great, who are looking for solutions — these women are not hypochondriacs, and they should not be dismissed or marginalized.
Harvard Business School brand analyst Jill Avery told me in 2017 this response may have indeed been a calculated move to strengthen their brand and draw their customers closer. “The segment of consumers who engage with Goop are interested in alternative, homeopathic remedies,” Avery said. “So, when Dr. Gunter challenges Goop, she challenges the ideological foundation of its consumers as well.”
What’s more, Avery said, the Goop response evokes “themes from feminism, Eastern medicines and philosophies, and anti-establishment politics to incite [Paltrow’s] consumers to action: to make them feel as if they are under attack, to reassure them that their ideology will be supported by Goop, and to arm them with arguments to help them defend themselves.”
To be sure, Goop has tapped into a real longing out there. Traditional medicine has failed people in many cases, and often lacks solutions for the most common health woes — chronic pain, obesity, Alzheimer’s. You need not look any further than the raging opioid epidemic to find cases where medicine has also done more harm than good.
But as Tim Caulfield told me, that doesn’t make it okay to throw away the scientific paradigm and accept any junk claim that comes along. “The idea that somehow science doesn’t have all the answers, science isn’t necessarily a morally good force, displays a misunderstanding of what science is. It’s not an ideology, not an industry, it’s not people. It’s a process.” Yes, pharmaceutical companies and doctors have sometimes done horrible things. But that doesn’t make the scientific method any less valuable; it means we need to strengthen it.
Still, wouldn’t the negative press surrounding Goop’s health claims have made some dent in their business? Avery doesn’t think so. “The old adage ‘no news is bad news’ comes to mind here,” she said.
I also posed this question to Larry Light, author of Six Rules for Brand Revitalization and the chief executive of the brand consulting company Arcature. “You can’t attack a belief with facts,” he reminded me. He agreed the Goop debunking would only galvanize its fans and thought that Paltrow’s new summits and magazine would further expand the Goop cult and deepen its members’ beliefs.
All this doesn’t mean, however, that calling out the Goopshit has been in vain.
We debunkers have probably helped inform and equip the public with sound health information, even if we’ve failed to convince Goop fans. This has been a fascinating chapter in the ongoing public debate about alternative medicine and health. But this episode is also an opportunity to think more about how to tilt the balance toward evidence-based thinking and away from Goopshit.
I once asked a group of doctors and health researchers for their advice on the best practices for fighting “fake news” and misinformation, since these problems are nothing new in the medical world.
Some of these health professionals came around to a belief I am now wholeheartedly convinced of: The best way to stop bogus health claims from taking off is to teach people how to think critically about the information they receive from a very early age.
Researchers from Europe and Africa recently worked to develop curricula — a cartoon-filled textbook, lessons plans — on critical thinking skills aimed at schoolchildren. In 2016, they tested the materials in a big trial involving 15,000 schoolchildren from Uganda’s central region.
The results of the trial were published in the Lancet last May, and showed a remarkable rate of success: Kids who were taught basic concepts of how to think critically about health claims massively outperformed children in a control group.
This work, from a group of evidence-minded research nerds, is the closest thing we have to a recipe book for how to prevent health bunk from spreading in the first place: Instead of trying to change people’s beliefs with facts, we need to teach them to call bullshit on pseudoscience drivel in the first place.
I’m a journalist, not an educator or policymaker. But for the educators and policymakers reading this, please take a hard look at your school curricula and the critical thinking skills they offer. It may be too late to dent Paltrow’s brand among her acolytes, but you might be able to stop the next Goop train from taking off.
