INSANELY curious about what you mean by "if he dies the band becomes real" what does that mean that sounds so fucking cool
Oh lmao! Its for a backup character!
Our campaign is very much one where the threat of death is looming, so I have the bones of a character in the works in case I need to scramble together another one. I have to keep myself from coming up with too many ideas for him, but Dionysian Nightmare is supposed to be his band :]!
As long as Eddie is alive (which is hopefully the whole campaign o7) the band will just be a fun easter egg. However, if he does die, I will go full Band Development mode. It will be fun and sad. If the extra doesn't get used, I'll still probably recycle him for another campaign or release him from dnd and just have him as a standard OC
As a treat here is the better mockup of the album cover + notes
Tumblr media
#dnd#thank you for the ask >:]]]]#i have had the name for the back up character for genuinely years but i haven't used it. its so good. i will not tell you#uhh#oh i guess the blue vein imagery probably doesn't invoke anything to people that are not my dm.#so. hm. how do i explain the undertow. its like the climate crisis and systemic oppression of those in poverty had a kid#its. its like a metaphor for the prison industrial complex. the keep calling it classism but i think its like. more than that#but i don't have the to get into that!#anyway. gosdurec. its blue. its highly addictive. its made from organs! its an easy symbol for the problems with this society!#but yes. theres a lot going on. my dm made a wiki. i will not share it because i don't know how much real life info is on there#but i spend time on there. i don't think he knows how much i love his creation#uhhh. Dionysian Nightmare: its like if an oc was a band.#this post also does not mention my google doc of band/artist names that i made i decided i wanted to talk to one of the npcs about music#i gave it to my dm and told him. do whatever with these. i need them out of my brain.#theres so many. give me 15 min and I could get you so many more. its wonderful i love it#anyways. music. dnd. i hope eddie doesn't die.#actually. okay another tangent.#my dm jokingly threatens us by saying he'll kill our pcs but more often our favorite npcs. there are not many comebacks to this.#Except. i have gotten him attached to eddie. so now i have the perfect reversal of just saying ill just let eddie die#so. as ive said before. job security or something.

you know those mainstream pieces of fiction where they try to do, like, a "nuanced" take on feminism by showing some sort of all-female separatist group and saying "misogyny is bad but so is being mean to men :("? those always really get my goat, because like. female separatism has all sorts of really glaring problems that you can make interesting commentary about, but "being too mean to men" is only maybe the fourth or fifth most pressing issue.
the glaring primary issues are the transphobia / racism / classism / etc that are kind of inherent to separatist spaces due to the whole, yknow, everything about how radical feminism came about and developed over the last few decades, but even if your piece of pop media doesn't have enough political teeth to get into all of that then why are you covering feminist topics in the first place lmao there's still the massive problem that all kinds of separatist spaces are high control groups. they encourage disconnection from the "outside world" so that the group can build up a real us vs them complex and the leaders can exert high levels of control over members' behavior and punish people who step out of line. but uhhh I guess reverse misogyny is worse than being a cult, sorry.

[ch 2]
just finished ch2 and got sick so excuse the ramblings of an only partly functioning brain HAHAHA but anyways some thoughts so far:
i think while he was dead, wei wuxian was semi-conscious or at least aware of time passing? he has a few direct thoughts like "I've actually been dead for many years" (p.14) and indirect "Wei Wuxian had already lost count of the number of years it'd been since he last heard a live person speak ..." (p.13). It can help explain his rather vaguely cavalier attitude towards his traumatic death and his, well, peculiar attitude towards his reverse non-con body possession which is honestly a sentence I really never thought I'd write. I also believe wwx was active in choosing not to "haunt the living, for one, and he'd never saught vengence, for two" (p.17) which makes me think about where he was? I guess he could be in the underworld or something, waiting for his soup of oblivion and reincarnation cycle but there's really no mention of the afterlife and I assume there won't be either but I'm really really curious and could be fun to explore. Also this whole chapter has such a flippant tone and a very easygoing, almost jokey manner. Like calling wwx the most "decent and honest" (p.17) ghost there could ever be -- there's really lots of exaggeration and hyperbole and it's just so very wwx.
but also it's not completely lighthearted of course, you can tell when the narration becomes serious like when wei wuxian becomes incensed about mo xuanyu's life. he insults mo xuanyu at first, lots of "madman" and "lunatic" (p.20), but he continues reading mo xuanyu's horrible eye-straining letters, listens to this poor dead boy's words, and eventually his rhetorical questions become mocking towards the mo family, his narration becomes gentle towards mo xuanyu, ultimately questioning "what kind of hellish life was he fucking living" (p.21). it is forgiveness despite the reverse non-con body possession, and it starts the novels characterisation of wwx really well, a subtle moral declaration of standing with the weak and the helpless, of revealing his great and deep empathy. like i believe wwx genuinely felt bad this tortured boy destroyed his soul to fulfil his last wish only to get an evil ghost that wasn't even evil. like it just made me so sad reading this part, you can feel the tragedy of a life cut short because of cruelty. really, wwx so called trecherous, wwx the mad. wwx, forever righteous and just.
i adore foreshadowing and comparisons that can be made between mo xuanyu and wei wuxian, and especially how mo xuanyu's backstory sets up like a miniature version of wwx backstory vs the cultivation gentry, already establishing an anti-classism/aristocracy theme. "It appeared that, despite how the cultivation world had demanded Wei Wuxian's demise, they nevercheless had no qualms about making use use of of his his inventions." (p.33) truly what righteousness, what orthodoxy and what single broad path? only hyprocrisy and the insular gentry, a world soaked in the blood of the weak, gorged on by the powerful.
also wwx is so smart? i love how he questions and deduces his way into knowing how to fulfil mo xuanyu's unknown wishes. like him publically putting out a spectacle and humiliating the mo family was very funny but it makes it rewarding when it's also revealed as an information gathering situation of the mo family, the village, the servants, as well as finding out who the cultivators invited are, AND if this level of revenge was enough to fulfil the contract was just ingeniusly written into a very fun interaction. this plus the flag "stealing" scene really shows how wwx can really think on the spot to achieve his covert goals while masking it as fun mischief and like his understanding of social dynamics and utilisisation of prejudice/preconceptions is extremely proficient.
and he canonically meditates a lot even within the first few pages so I don't really understand where the fanon "he can't meditate" thing comes from alskkfl
also i like how wwx really didnt want to kill the mo family even if it meant like not dying but even worse dying this time cause his soul would be destroyed which allskdd huh maybe the traumatic death was an indication of smth but also wwx really isn't into killing or escalating situations at all. and then he's all like 'not like it'll be all that hard' about the killing too but still refuses to do so and compared to the whole massacre, blood, supreme evil lord stuff, it really reveals to not trust what the ears hear and only half what the eyes see (butchered edgar allen poe quote btw). and i really like how explaining the summoning also set up the spell backlash concept for later. and wwx really risking it all for the lan disciples because it was the good thing to do.
also i never really thought about it but mdzs is a really cool contrast to most transmigration/time stories I've read? mdzs is a really great reversal of the transmig/time-reversal genre tbh which should be expected of mxtx considering svsss i suppose! but like setting it 13 years into the future instead of the past, having the body snatching be intentional from the original owner, explaining the rules and that there had been previous and recorded historical accounts of this type of body trading, making the protagonist accidentally fulfilling the contract instead of actively, and many other things! it's great, it really is!
okay!! my brain is melting right now and i still have so much more to say like the lan disciples!!! and lan sizhui!! omhygod my boy!! but yeah! brain melt! so see you next time!!!

what would you change about lucas as a character? or is he good? claude? athanasia?
I would delete Lucas from the story if he wasn't the catalyst for setting the story in motion. His existence stunts Athy's growth and was one of the reasons why Aeternitas couldn't unleash his potential as the final villain. He's too overpowered, too mean. If you asked me what I would change about him, the answer would be everything. I just don't like him.
Claude is perfectly flawed. Love that. He can stay that way.
Athanasia: 1. Give her actual flaws, I guess. I mean she has some flaws like being self-conscious and doubting herself, worrying that she is unworthy of being loved but those are flaws that you can already find in 99% of heroines in shoujo mangas. The same goes for “stupid with love” and clumsiness. Her obsession with gold and sweets isn’t treated as a flaw but a small, amusing aspect of her character. It has a minor impact on the story contrary to Anastacius whose greed proved to be fatal. I would take some of her minor flaws away and replace them with major flaws.
like:- overplanning (it fits with her perfectionist character). I can’t understand how she planned to collect jewels for her escape, but beyond that she didn’t plan anything else. What to do if she lost them. What kind of profession she was willing to pursue, where she wanted to live, how to escape. Rather than her plan failing because of her lack of farsightedness, it’d be interesting if her plan didn’t work completely because she came overprepeared and as it’s normal a plan if involving too many steps is under a highter risk of failure since there are things bound to happen that you failed to clalculate.
ignorance/classism: I would have amplified this trait a little bit and then would have let her interacted with commoners at the bottom of the society for character development. Let her question what she has been taught. Let her go of the Imperial propaganda. Let her make connections to people who are not nobles after she has been toppled from the massive privilege she was born into. Instead of Athy forging money, which could get others in trouble, I would have let her work for a living.
Tumblr media
2. I would let her trauma have a deeper impact on her behaviour. Now that she has forgiven Claude everything seems to be happy-go-lucky. But that’s not how it works.  Realistically, she should be avoiding events, or places that remind her of her trauma. For example I can’t imagine her actual liking her birthday (same with Claude who I also think would hate Christmas), because bad things keep happening on these days. I can imagine her celebrating officially in front of the nobles, but secretly moving her birthday onto another day where she celebrates with a small circle of her loved ones. A change of preferances/dislikes like her suddenly despising the sight/smell of roses because her father tried to kill her in front of her beloved rose garden would be interesting too.
Nightmares are another way to show her trauma. I would have liked to see a scene where Athy awakens from a bad dream and runs to Claude to make sure that it really was only a dream. She knocks on Claude’s door and runs into his arms and is crying, and Claude hugs her awkwardly and tells her that he loves her and that everything will be alright. And when he rises his hand to pat her head she flinches, in such a way that he can’t help but notice. Maybe the way he moved resembled the way he moved his hand when he was about to try to kill her on that day. Sure, logically she knows that he won’t do that anymore but the memory is still deeply integrated in her mind and her body reacts accordingly. When she has returned to her room and fallen asleep. it’s Claude who experiences sleepless nights for he is now finally aware of the irreversibility of his actions and that forgiving doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting. (can we get guilty Claude trying to cheer up a depressed Athy? A reversal of season one?).
3. other stuff:
- Athy teaching herself magic earlier than in canon and accidentally blowing things up
- Athy getting frustrated that there are things she can’t do perfectly on the first try and giving up too fast (I think gifted people have a hard time with this new negative experience)
- her having ‘useless’ interests that aren’t valued in high society yet she chooses to pursue them regardless cause it is fun.
-  Athy developing an appetite for Siodonnian sweets and trying to bring her mother’s culture over to Obelia, causing a cultural exchange to happen. Food, fashion, dances, literature, festivals. The first dispute happens and Claude lets her mediate.
- Athy learning to cast her own protection spells. Always carrying jewelry with her. It’s not that she doesn’t trust Claude but it makes her feel safe in case something happens.
- Athy visiting orphanages and starting a well throught out adoption system for abandoned children and people who are unable to have children but want one. Basically Athy improving the lives of kids living on the streets and caring for children that got abandoned like she was. To make sure that they won’t be mistreated once they’ve gotten adopted she creates laws that criminalize the abandonment and neglect of children with hefty punishments for the wealthy elite.
- and lastly I want her to be stricter towards the other nobles that betrayed her. They got spared while Ijekiel’s family who helped her got punished. What kind of message does this send? Betrayal gets ignored and loyality gets punished? I know most of them didn’t know Ijekiel helped, but this doesn’t change that the other traitors got away easily. She’s still too soft.

Too Good (Ransom Drysdale x Reader)
Tumblr media
WARNINGS: NON-CON, CLASSISM, a surprise crossover
{IF ANY OF THIS OFFENDS YOU, PLEASE DNI}
➥ {page breaks done by @whimsicalrogers}
summary:  you’ve worked for the Thrombeys for years and your professional, borderline detached, attitude has always led Ransom to take you as another low class citizen who hates the rich. A surprise run in at your engagement party proves that isn’t the case at all: it’s just his family you hate.
~
“You staying for the soiree tonight?”
You paused in your cleaning, glancing up at Meg as she pulled from her juul.
Winter break had been well under way for a few days now and the entire Thrombey family had been trickling into Harlan’s home one by one. The famous writer always welcomed his family during the holidays, and while you admired his generosity, you hated that it put you face to face with the rest of the snobbish bunch.
Walter Thrombey was spineless and his wife, Donna, wasn’t much better. His wife at least had the tendency to steer clear of drama while Walt, on the other hand, was always trying to tell Harlan how to run his business. These were things you could overlook if it weren’t for the fact that they’d managed to raise a Nazi in the making. Some of Donna’s comments during politics talk told you that this wasn’t exactly a case of a rebelling teenager.
Joni was harmless but annoying at best. It wasn’t surprising that she and Meg were the only ones you could tolerate. They were far less snobby than the rest, but there was still something about them that didn’t make you completely comfortable around them. Meg loved to refer to Marta, Harlan’s nurse, as family, but occasionally you found yourself wondering how sincere that really was. You often told Marta that she shouldn’t have told Meg the truth about her family, but Marta was a trusting girl.
Linda, Harlan’s daughter, walked around with far too much self-importance all because she considered herself to be self-made. You chose your words carefully because you were positive anyone could be as successful as she was if they too got a small loan of a million dollars from their father. Her husband, Richard, was a racist who would balk at such a label. He’s full of micro aggressions and sometimes just downright aggression. He loved the money that came with being married into the Thrombey family, and considering he’d signed a prenup, it was no secret that the man lived in fear of losing everything with one wrong move.
Perhaps you were a bit harsh in how you looked at Linda and Richard, but they gave you more than enough reasons to think negatively of them, and the biggest reason of all was due to drift in with the wind any moment now. Joni had reached some milestone in her business that was apparently quite a big deal, and so Harlan had offered to throw a celebration. You were invited, not as help, but as a guest. You were still undecided and that was what you told Meg.
She exhaled, the sickly-sweet scent filling your lungs as you slid the rag along the kitchen counter.
“Don’t tell me you’ve got a better night planned with that boyfriend of yours?”
You chuckled, throwing her a small smile.
“Maybe I do,” you coyly replied.
She took another drag before replying.
“To be honest, I wouldn’t blame you if you ditched us for a hot date. Ransom is gonna show within the next three hours or so, and you know he can barely stand the sight of you,” she said.
“The feeling is mutual,” you murmured, turning to face her as you finally finished.
She laughed, offering you the juul. With a sigh, you accepted it, figuring that you deserved it after your day. You’d been cleaning along with Fran nonstop all day in order to prepare for tonight.
“Why does he hate you so much anyway?” she wondered out loud.
You pressed the plastic to your lips and handed it back to her just before exhaling.
“Because I think he’s a piece of shit,” you answered.
She rolled her eyes with a crooked smile.
“We all do,” she deadpanned.
“Yeah, but…you’re family. It’s kind of expected…especially in your family. Besides, I disliked him the very moment I met him. I never even gave him the benefit of the doubt because I saw right through him, and he knows I see right through him.”
You gathered your cleaning supplies.
“To tell you the truth, I’m not sure why that gets underneath his skin so much. I know I can’t be the only person he’s met who feels the same way, but maybe it has something to do with his pride or whatever. Who knows? I should get ready to go, anyway.”
There was a smirk on Meg’s red lips.
“I knew you had a hot date.”
You rolled your eyes.
“I wouldn’t call it a hot date or anything, but spending time with my boyfriend does beat the alternative,” you told her.
She followed you out of the kitchen, pouting as you threw on your coat and grabbed your purse.
“You hardly talk about him that sometimes I forget you have a beau waiting at home for you when you leave here,” she complained.
“Meg, you know I like to keep my work life and personal life as separate as possible,” you reiterated, looking for your keys.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re so uptight about that,” she waved you off.
You threw her a look.
“You know how your family can be,” you told her matter-of-factly.
Meg playfully scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest as she followed you to the door.
“Are you ashamed of us?” she questioned as you walked out.
You stuck your head back in, hand on the doorframe as you smiled.
“Yes.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You’ll be back first thing tomorrow, right?”
“Of course,” you chirped. “I can’t leave Fran to clean up the mess that will no doubt be left in the morning.”
“Drive safe,” she called as you descended the steps.
You were nearing your car when the purr of another sounded from the long driveway. You paused as you realized just who was making their way in and you wasted no time in unlocking your car. His light-colored vintage one slid in beside yours, and you sank into your seat just as he hopped out.
You didn’t spare him a glance as you started your vehicle, but you could feel his cold blue gaze boring into you. Your suspicions were proven right when you went to close your door only to be thwarted. His large hands pressed down onto the top of your door, and when you looked up at him, there was a mocking smile on his pink lips.
“Y/N,” he greeted. “Leaving so soon?”
You couldn’t see his eyes for his dark shades, but you just knew they were mocking you too.
“Yes,” you tersely replied, pulling on your door.
You huffed when he, and your door by extension, didn’t budge.
“That’s a real shame. I was looking forward to seeing what you look like when you’re not on your hands and knees…scrubbing, that is.”
“I have a prior engagement,” was your simple answer, pulling on the door again.
“Ah. I think I did hear Meg mention a boyfriend once. Let me guess… You’ve got a homecooked meal waiting for you in whatever rundown apartment you live in? Maybe you’ve got a date planned. Feeding the homeless? Singing to less fortunate children?”
You clenched your jaw, just waiting for him to back away.
“That is more up your alley, right? You’ve got to do something to make up for hanging around us snobs all day lest we wear off on you.”
You stared through your windshield, looking away from him with so much dismissal you were sure you heard him growl at you.
“Are you finished?” you wondered.
He scoffed, staring at you for a moment longer before eventually backing away. You slammed your door shut and locked it without hesitation. With a sigh, you finally backed away, pushing all thoughts of Ransom Drysdale out of your mind as you drove home.
Tumblr media
Soft music littered the air as well as the aroma of food as you stepped inside of your house. You dropped your purse and keys onto the table beside the door and peeled your coat off as confusion filled you. You didn’t recall having planned anything for the evening, but you shouldn’t have been too surprised. Your boyfriend was always going out of his way to treat you.
You looked around for him as you approached the kitchen, confusion growing when you saw no sign of him. You had just opened your mouth to call for him when familiar arms wrapped around you. You jumped a bit before relaxing into his embrace, a smile on your lips as he buried his face in the crook of your neck.
“Welcome home,” he purred.
“…and what a nice welcome it is. Is there some occasion that I missed?”
He inhaled, humming as he thought.
“Mm, no. None that I can think of. Can’t I spoil you? Especially after the day I’m sure you’ve had?”
At the mention of work, you groaned, and he chuckled.
“How was work, by the way?” he wondered, massaging your shoulders now as he walked you through the house.
“Tiresome,” you honestly replied. “They’re having some celebration of sorts tonight, so it was up to me and the other housekeeper to make sure the entire place was in tip top shape.”
He paused.
“You weren’t invited?” he asked, an iciness in his voice that was familiar to you whenever you talked about work.
“I was, but…”
You shook your head as you trailed off.
“You know that I don’t like to be around those people any longer than I need to be.”
You weren’t exaggerating when you told Meg that you liked for your work and personal life to be completely separate. The Thrombeys knew absolutely nothing about your personal life, including your boyfriend, and the reverse was the same. While your boyfriend knew that you worked for a rich family on the side to help with graduate school, he didn’t know what family it was, and that was how you liked it. Especially considering how tight knit elite circles were, there was always a chance he knew them.
“It’s almost over, hun. You’re almost done with your degree, and soon you won’t have to go back there ever again,” he murmured. “Of course, you wouldn’t be there in the first place if you’d just let me…”
You scoffed as he trailed off, and you turned around in his arms just as you two reached the stairs. You rested your hands on his shoulder, gazing into his blue eyes as he fought a smirk. You playfully narrowed your eyes at him before running a hand through his dark hair.
“Charles Blackwood… How many times do I have to say it?”
“Providing for you will hardly make a dent in my fortune, Y/N,” he sighed.
“I don’t care. There’s no reason you should pay for my tuition when I can do it myself. We barely compromised on me living here instead of my old apartment,” you grumbled, still miffed about it.
“It’s been what, 2 years since you moved in? Don’t tell me you’re still sour because I made more sense than you did during the argument,” he said with a smirk.
You rolled your eyes.
“That’s not important. You are not paying for my tuition. Like you said, I’m so close. I only have to put up with that family for a few more months and then…”
You leaned in, brushing your lips against his.
“I’m all yours,” you whispered.
“You’re all mine anyway,” he haughtily replied, deepening the kiss. “…after you get cleaned up.”
He gently pushed you away.
“I’ve run you a hot bath and its waiting for you,” he said.
You threw him a confused smile.
“Seriously, what’s the occasion?” you wondered.
“I’ll tell you later. Go on,” he urged, shooing you up the stairs.
With one last skeptical look thrown over your shoulder, you followed his demands. You didn’t think twice about getting undressed when you entered the lavish bathroom. Rose petals floated along the steaming water and the lighting was low, candles lit all over the room. You sank into the tub with a low moan, relieved to finally be off of your feet.
You did your best to enjoy the moment, doing everything you could to keep tomorrow off of your mind. Like Charles said, it was almost over. You only had a few months left, but you were sure that you’d murder Ransom before then. You scoffed at the thought of the dark-haired prick.
Hugh “Ransom” Drysdale was the embodiment of everything you hated. He was selfish, obnoxiously arrogant, spoiled, and there was a complete lack of reality that surrounded him that made your lips curl. Him being blissfully unaware of matters of the real world wasn’t the problem at hand. It was his contentment in his ignorance that was the problem, and Linda and Richard had raised him that way.
It was why you could never understand their displeasure with his attitude. Their annoyance and grievances with their son never failed to confuse you. Ransom was the way he was purely because of them. The spoiled brat did not raise himself. Forcing the blue-eyed devil out of your brain, you finished washing up. When you exited the bathroom, a gorgeous, and no doubt expensive, nightgown was waiting for you on your bed.
It kissed your feet as you descended the stairs, and you brushed your hands over the wine-colored garment as Charles faced you. He was placing your plates on the table when you entered the dining room, and his eyes lit up when he looked at you.
“You look a thousand times better now that you’re more relaxed,” he said, kissing your cheek as he pulled your chair out.
“I feel a thousand times better,” you agreed. “I really needed that. Thank you.”
Dinner was a talkative affair. You only discussed work for a short while longer before asking Charles about his day. He told you about some clients, one of them a bit of a pain, but nothing he wasn’t used to. You found yourself smiling at him as he droned on, just basking in the sound of his voice, and eventually, he stopped when he noticed.
“What’s the matter?”
You shook your head at him, finishing your wine.
“Nothing. I just…like hearing you talk,” you confessed.
He rolled his eyes and stood, approaching you.
“You’re so sappy,” he complained, leaning down to press his lips to your cheek, taking your empty glass.
“More wine?” he asked, grabbing the bottle.
“Please,” you said.
He placed the refilled glass before you, moving into the kitchen.
“Don’t tell me you have dessert planned too,” you called over your shoulder, bringing the glass to your lips.
With the day you had, you emptied it in no time. He didn’t respond and you were going to say something else, but your mind went blank when the light caught something at the bottom of the glass. Your mouth parted as you eyed it, blinking a few times, wondering if you were imagining things. Shakily, you stood up, turning to call for Charles when you nearly tripped over him.
He was kneeling…on one knee, blue eyes gazing up at you as you gaped at him. Startled, you dropped the glass, and before you could shout, he caught it, preventing a mess to clean. You fought to say something.
“Charles…”
“You’re mine just as I am yours, and I want to make it official…”
You softly exhaled as he continued.
“I know you hate it when I spend money on you,” he continued, pouring the ring into his hand. “…but it’s just how I know to show I care. I would buy you the stars…if I could…”
He held the ring up to you.
“I know you want to be a lawyer and rule the world, so let me rule it with you…”
He took your hand, pressing his lips to your fingers as he looked at you from beneath his lashes as your full name fell from his pink lips.
“…will you marry me?”
It was insane how quickly you answered, how smoothly the ‘yes’ fell from your tongue. Marriage had come up maybe once during the entire relationship, and it’d been so long ago that you’d forgotten how the conversation went.
Once the ring was on your finger, it took no time at all for him to sweep you up into his arms. It appears that you had spoken too soon, because there was indeed a mess to clean when Charles cleared the table in one sweep, depositing you on it before attacking you like a man starved.
You didn’t keep count of how many times he fucked you that night, on every surface he could possibly lay you on. He loved the feel of your hands pressing against him, the cool band of the ring pressing into his skin. You didn’t feel guilty at all for calling in the following morning, opting instead to spend the day in bed with your fiancé.
Tumblr media
You walked out of Harlan’s office with a small smile. He’d taken your abrupt resignation better than you’d hoped, but then again, Harlan always had been a kind man. The months you’d originally had left had been shortened to a week. When asked why, you simply showed Harlan your ring, watching his crinkly eyes widen at the sheer size before a youthful laugh left his lips.
“Well, congratulations,” he’d said.
You’d thanked him, telling him that the next few months or so would be spent planning the wedding. Neither your or Charles wanted to waste any time. Harlan respected how private you were about your personal life, so he didn’t press for information, only saying that your fiancé was a lucky man.
Harlan’s voice carried, you’d always known that, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to find Meg and Fran waiting outside of the door when you exited. Their eyes sparkled in anticipation, and with a playful sigh, you reluctantly lifted your left hand.
Embarrassment flooded you when they shouted, gasps and ooh’s and aah’s leaving their lips as they admired the ring. It started to attract the attention of the rest of the family, and you shrunk in on yourself. Meg suddenly took your hand, lips parted.
“Y/N, this…this cost a fortune,” she breathed.
You cringed.
“Please, please don’t tell me how much. I was kind of hoping that since it’s one of those big diamonds its really more show than what it’s worth,” you said.
“Not likely,” Meg scoffed, running her finger over it.
“You sure know how to pick them,” Fran said, lighthearted jealousy coating her tone.
“Oh my God,” Joni dragged out as she took your hand, mouth gaping as her eyes flickered between you and the ring. This is from the new-.”
She cut herself off when Meg nudged her, signaling that you didn’t need to know.
“Please, I’d sleep much better at night if I didn’t know how much this cost. You can speculate amongst yourselves, but leave me out of it,” you laughed.
You ran into the rest of the family, sans Ransom, as you walked away. They immediately pulled you into hugs, congratulations on their lips. They all took turns admiring the ring and telling you how lucky you were. When you finally broke away, you got started on your job. You were much happier to do it now that you only had one more week left.
You were upstairs, cleaning a spare room when you finally ran into Ransom. You had turned to exit only to find him leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed over his chest. A light blue sweater adorned his frame, making the color of his eyes pop even more.
“Hugh,” you barely acknowledged, moving to get past him.
The asshole that he was, he pressed his hand to the other side of the frame, blocking you in as he smirked down at you. Before you could react, he was gripping your left hand in his own, holding it up to his face as he looked down his nose at your ring. He let out a low whistle.
“I suppose Meg wasn’t kidding. That’s an expensive piece you’ve got there,” he murmured.
You snatched your hand out of his when he brushed his thumb over your skin. You pursed your lips as you glared at him.
“Thank you,” you curtly replied.
When he didn’t move, you heaved a sigh. It seemed that he was determined to make your last week as miserable as possible.
“Judging by your taste in men, I do have to wonder how he can afford it,” he said, just shy of an accusation.
You scoffed.
“…and how would you know my taste in men? You don’t know anything about me,” you argued.
He smirked down at you, disdain in his eyes.
“I know that you wouldn’t be caught dead with…let’s say, a man like me. I’m simply curious is all. I would hate for you to find yourself in an embarrassing situation all because it turned out to be stolen,” he quietly replied, lips curling over his teeth. “…or fake.”
You clenched your jaw, tempted to slap him at his insinuation.
“You’re right. My fiancé isn’t a man like you, and that’s how I know it isn’t stolen…or fake, so you don’t have anything to worry about,” you snidely replied, shoving past him.
You could feel his eyes boring into your back as you descended the stairs.
Tumblr media
“Sweetheart, you look amazing,” Charles purred, hand tightening along your waist as you adjusted your strap again.
“I just… I feel so out of place,” you murmured.
You and Charles had rented the most extravagant hall to host your engagement party. It was just a taste of the life you were marrying into, and you’d accepted that when you said yes, but it was going to take some getting used to. While you were familiar with some of Charles’ friends, it had never occurred to you that everyone who was anyone would also be invited. Wealthy business partners and elite families alike were in attendance, eager to see who the Charles Blackwood had popped the question to.
Your friends and family seemed to blend right in though, much more receptive to this lifestyle than you were. It was your own mother who’d picked your dress and shoes, and a close cousin who’d done your hair and makeup. You decided to entrust them with the task more often the minute you saw Charles’ face, eyes darkening as he took in the golden number you had on. It swished around your feet as you walked and tastefully clung to you in all of the right places.
“Relax,” he murmured, kissing your cheek.
You laid your hand on his as you did just that. The two of you stood on the spiral staircase near the entrance, greeting everyone as they came in. A greeting was already on your lips as the next set of guests entered, but your words died in your throat as you eyed them.
You turned your head away, back almost completely to the entrance as you looked down. Charles laid his hand on your shoulder.
“What is it?”
“Why are the Thrombeys here?” you wondered.
He frowned.
“They’re old friends of the family. We hardly speak, the last time being years ago, but I felt it polite to invite them, nonetheless. How do you…?”
He trailed off as your eyes met his, realization bleeding into them.
“Ah,” he quietly said, blinking. “I feel silly for not connecting the dots sooner…”
“Don’t,” you said, placing your hand on his chest. “I wanted to keep my personal life private from them and the same goes for my work life with you. You know how stressed I get talking about them and I just…”
“No, I get it,” he murmured. “Let me guess… The ‘asshole’ you often refer to is none other than Ransom. He hasn’t changed at all, I see…”
He nodded over your shoulder as he said this, and you nodded. His lips thinned into a line, but he simply pulled you closer as you turned back around. Your smile was strained as the familiar faces got closer.
“Y/N, you never told us that your fiancé was none other than Charles Blackwood himself,” Joni cried out, kissing each of your cheeks. “When we saw the names on the invites, well, I just said to myself there’s no way!”
You let out an awkward chuckle as Linda did the same.
“It never really came up, I suppose,” you lamely replied.
Meg pulled you into a hug, making you swear to tell her everything, and you could hear Richard and Walt congratulating Charles as Donna hesitantly hugged you as well. Ransom was quiet, and you found that odd. He never ran out of insults to hurl at you, but then again, you supposed he was saving face.
Walt and Richard extended their congrats to you again, and you swallowed when the questions started. How did you meet? How long have you been together? How did he propose? Deep down, you knew what they really wanted to know. How had you bagged him? What did he see in you? How did you even meet, what with your differing social circles and all? Charles was more than happy to answer all of them for you, sensing your discomfort, and you found your eyes connecting with a familiar blue pair.
Ransom was dressed as impeccably as everyone else, black suit adorning his fit frame as he gazed at you. Unable to hold his heavy stare, you glanced away, relief flowing through you when they finally departed to go partake in the festivities. Charles pressed his lips to the side of your head when they finally left, breathing you in.
“I won’t invite them to the wedding,” he offered.
You chuckled, shaking your head.
“No, it’s fine. It’d be odd not to, I suppose. Like you said, they’re old friends of the family, not just my employers…”
“Former employers,” he corrected with a smile.
You happily sighed, smile widening.
“Ah, yes. It feels good to be reminded of that,” you replied, squeezing his hand as he pulled you along.
Yesterday had been your last day which was why you were gutted to see them again…and so soon. Your farewells the previous day seemed silly now. Embarrassing even, since you’d been so sure that would be the last you’d see of them. Ransom had just made your last week so unbearable that you’d been overeager to leave the house.
Every sly comment he threw at you was meant to get under your skin, to make you uncomfortable. You suppose that had been his goal ever since you started working for his family. The dislike was mutual sure, but at least yours was valid. Ransom treated people he viewed as less than like garbage. He was a classist prick, and there was no doubt in your mind that his sour mood had everything to do with a low rate citizen like you joining his world, so to speak.
After having too much to drink, you slipped away from your fiancé with a kiss on his cheek.
“Where are you off to?” he wondered.
“I have to use the little girl’s room,” you whispered in his ear.
He chuckled, urging you along.
“I told you to slow down,” he whispered back with a smile. “Hurry back.”
“Will do,” you sang, leaving him with a peck on the lips.
The two bathrooms downstairs were all full, and considering how full your bladder was, you had no other choice but to climb the stairs to the second floor. You’d made a deal with the owners that all of the festivities would be held downstairs, upstairs off limits, but you were one of the renters and you had to pee. Badly.
The elaborate hallways were a bit confusing, but eventually you found a bathroom. You hurried as best as you could, not wanting to keep Charles waiting. You took longer than you intended to when washing your hands, distracted by your ring. It gleamed at you in the light, and you found yourself absentmindedly smiling at it, still in disbelief that you were getting married.
A yelp of fright escaped you when you finally opened the door, almost running into a chest. For a brief second, you thought that it was Charles, thinking that maybe he’d come after you, but the dark hair and blue eyes did not belong to him.
“What the hell, Hugh? You almost gave me a heart attack,” you complained, hand pressed to your chest.
“We wouldn’t want that, now would we?” he hummed.
You blinked, fully realizing that he was upstairs when he shouldn’t be.
“What are you doing up here?”
He didn’t answer you, instead stepping forward, causing you to stumble back as he entered the bathroom. Before you could say anything else, he slammed the door closed behind him, and your heart jumped in your chest. Alcohol may have been coursing through your system, jumbling your mind a bit, but you were coherent enough to understand that something wasn’t right. You looked him over, somewhat concerned, and noticed that his tie was missing.
“Hugh-.”
“You know, all this time, I just thought you were the typical jealous bitch,” he casually started, making your eyes widen as he glanced around with a sigh.
“Excuse me?”
“You looked at me like something you find on the bottom of your shoe the very moment you met me,” he quietly spat, eyes meeting yours. “What a shame I thought it was that you were another one of those ‘eat the rich’ types. I thought we could have had some fun together, but you wouldn’t look twice at me. Hell, you hardly looked once.”
“Are you drunk, right now? Is that what this is?”
He stepped closer, and you stepped closer to the sink, trying to get around him.
“You always have a grand time with Fran and Marta, giggling with them and any other staff member we temporarily hire, but you clam up the minute any of us comes near you. I always hated how obvious you were about it, how unashamed you were to broadcast your disgust with our lifestyle-.”
“I think you’re drunk,” you finally decided.
“Little did I know that it wasn’t the money that disgusted you. Otherwise, why on earth would you be getting married to Charles Blackwood, of all people?”
He said your fiancé’s name as if it were the vilest thing in the world, and you frowned at him. His expression was unreadable, and your frown deepened.
“Are you telling me you’re shocked that my hatred of your family has nothing to do with your wealth but instead, oh…I don’t know, your personalities?”
“As if Charles is just a beacon of generosity,” Ransom sneered.
You crossed your arms over your chest, glaring at him.
“Are you upset with me because I don’t like you? Is that it? I refuse to believe that because, believe it or not Hugh, a lot of people don’t like you,” you mockingly told him.
He leaned one hand on the sink, officially trapping you as he looked down his nose at you.
“That usually stems from some level of envy, but not you it seems. Why would you be envious? You’ve been dating Charles…Blackwood…”
He chuckled, but it lacked humor. His other hand gripped your left, and he sneered at your ring.
“It was easier to write your rejection off when I thought it was shallow and unfounded, you know. That isn’t the case though, is it? Hell, soon you’ll be richer than me,” he murmured.
“Are you jealous?” you chuckled. “Charles doesn’t exactly seem your type…”
“Didn’t think he was yours either,” he threw back.
You scoffed.
“I don’t care about the money. That’s not why I’m with him. If I wanted to bag any rich guy for tuition, I would’ve slept with your father a long time ago,” you told him.
His jaw ticked, and he backed you into the wall. Ransom was definitely drunk, that much was obvious, and you found yourself growing nervous the longer he stared at you.
“What does Charles Blackwood have that I don’t?” he slowly questioned.
The question confused you, throwing you off, and you huffed, looking away from him. He was so close, body heat mingling with yours, and you cringed when he rested his hands on the wall. Fed up with his games, you pushed against him.
“My fiancé is waiting for me,” you hissed.
He pushed back, pressing his chest against yours as he pinned you to the wall.
“You wouldn’t look twice at me, but you’ll marry Charles Blackwood?”
“He has class!”
He glared at you.
“…for one thing,” you continued. “…and unfortunately for you, that is something money can’t buy. Now if you’ll excuse me…”
He gripped your wrists when you tried to leave, and you winced.
“Let go of me, Hugh! Charles will start to look for me,” you warned him.
His lips curved upwards into a smirk.
“Then I guess I better be quick…”
You opened your mouth, but he swallowed whatever you were going to say with a kiss. You fought against him, but he wrapped his arms around you, pinning you against him as he moved his mouth against yours. You gasped for breath when he pulled away only to sharply inhale when he shoved his tie in your mouth.
Your screams were muffled as he spun you around, hand pressing into your back as he pushed you against the counter. The sound of his belt buckle caused your struggle to increase, and your fears were confirmed when you looked in the mirror. Tears skipped down your face when he pulled up your dress, and you reached back, but he simply grabbed your hand and pinned it to your back.
He was pressed so firmly against you that you could hardly move your legs. His chest was firm as it grazed your back, and your heart dropped to your stomach when you felt him reaching in between you, the head of his cock grazing you moments later.
You tried to call his name around the fabric in your mouth, to try and talk sense into him, but it was no use. His lips grazed your ear as he leaned over you.
“You think I’m not good enough for you?”
You pushed back against him, and he chuckled.
“You think you’re better than me? You think your fiancé is better than me?”
He thrust into you, and a choked yelp escaped around the tie. One hand clasped around the back of your neck, pressing your forehead against the mirror as he forced himself into you again and again.
“I can have any woman I want- I do have any woman I want. I’m not going to let you walk around thinking you’re the exception,” he purred, rutting into you.
Your core burned at the forced entry, his hardened member dragging against your walls. You stomped your foot, sobs escaping you now as he had his way with you. You squeezed your eyes shut when he would groan, his labored breathing coinciding with the rhythm of his hips connecting with your butt.
“You walk around that house like you’re better than us. Looking down on us like you’re too good. You’re not. No one’s too good for me,” he moaned. “Not even the future Mrs. Blackwood.”
Somewhere upstairs, you could hear your name being called. You knew it was Charles, and there was no telling how long it’d take for him to find you. You yourself had almost gotten lost looking for a bathroom. Ransom’s thrusts grew erratic, his harsh breaths in your ear.
“That sounds like your lovely fiancé… I wonder what he’d do if he walked in here? You think he’d still marry you? Hmm?”
His hand slid around to the front of your throat, cutting off your breathing.
“He’d probably throw you out of that big ole house…you’d have to come and work for us again…”
He pulled you away from the sink and pushed you up against the door. His hand that was on your back moved up to turn the light off, sliding into you with ease now. You reached up to claw at the hand around your throat, vision blurring. You moved to bang against the door, but his arm snaked around you, pinning yours to your side.
Your head lolled back to land on his shoulder, and he let out a low moan in your ear. You shook as he came inside of you, his thrusts slowing down, lazily sliding his cock in and out of you now. You heard Charles getting farther away, his voice distant now. Ransom gripped your chin, finally allowing you to breathe and forced your head towards him, tears in your eyes.
His blue eyes were cold, nostrils flaring as he glared at you.
“No one is too good for me,” he quietly told you. “Remember that when you walk down the aisle.”

re: your reblog on mako and bolin, people really be calling mako trash for becoming a detective (when 1. LOK takes places in a universe without the history of U.S. policing and 2. he's grew up in poverty and this is the first job that he didn't take out of survival) WHILE glossing over asami and varrick being war profiteers, wu being an ass-hat royal, and korra being repeatedly tortured so that she could "empathize" with a fascist. classism is real in this fandom.
oh it's so fucking weird, like
sure, there are discussions to be had about the way police were portrayed in lok, particularly in the context in which the show was created (in universe, they didn't have the history of US policing, but the show was aimed at an audience who did, and there are worthwhile discussions to be had about that, especially considering the way lok was westernized compared to atla), and especially given the optics of all police in republic city being benders when book one revolved around nonbender oppression (so maybe something should have been made about the fact that law enforcement was entirely populated with benders that had highly specialized bending forms [like entire squads of metalbenders]), but those clearly weren't discussions the show was interested in having.
which is absolutely a criticism to be leveled at the show, but why does mako get all of this hate for??? taking a job with a steady income???? a reliable steady income, that isn't reliant on winning a whole series of competitions (pro-bending) or physical labor intensive/dangerous (factory work)???? so that he can provide a better life for himself and his brother????
nevermind the fact that, like you said--asami and varrick are war profiteers (and varrick doesn't even get a real redemption arc, he just... lingers and eventually grows on people like a fungus, and then has a really western wedding to a woman he mistreated for the entire series), wu is a spoiled prince, and korra spends the entire series upholding the status quo. ("you're all oppressing yourselves" continues to live in my mind rent-free to this day, and not in the good way, since it's not a stance she ever meaningfully confronts or reverses; nonbender oppression is just forgotten about by the next season and i guess we're meant to think it's just Over because a nonbender is president even though he seems to be little more than an ineffectual figurehead, but anyway)
it makes no sense to me that mako gets so much hate in fandom for 'being a cop' when becoming a cop doesn't have the same weight in-universe as it does in the US (the reason i talk shit about toph becoming a cop is that growing up to enforce laws when she spent her entire life before then flouting them is completely antithetical to her character, and i think lin becoming a cop as a form of rebellion against her mother would've made a much more compelling family narrative for the beifongs, and also wouldn't have involved toph being a corrupt police chief hiding evidence to get her child out of trouble and then running off to hide in a swamp so she didn't have to deal with the fallout from the way her choices affected her family), and so many other characters did stupid shit that makes a whole lot more sense to rake them across the coals over????
especially since war profiteer varrick (who only stopped because, as far as i can tell, it stopped being particularly profitable for him--not because he actually cares about where his money comes from) continues to be a fandom darling lmfao. like where is the understanding and compassion for the boy who watched his parents get murdered when he was eight years old and struggled to survive while protecting and raising his little brother????

Embarrassingly, last night I wrote an exceedingly long and sickeningly heartfelt email to some Netflix people (executives? Idk) based on advice from #saveteenagebountyhunters. It felt important, so I decided to share.
Hi there, friend.
I don't usually do this, because writing in to a studio about a show that you just watched seems a bit over the top, and potentially just a drop of salt water in a river that somebody has already built a bridge to get over.
However, on the off chance that this email might make a difference, I just want to say that it would be really, really, super-mega-cool if you guys changed your minds about renewing Teenage Bounty Hunters for another season. I finally got around to watching it this week, and I want to firstly, congratulate you for such a stellar piece of work, and secondly, implore you not to leave it unfinished. Not only is it fantastic and hilarious, but I also think it's kind of important, and I'm going to apologise in advance for the length of time I'm going to spend on telling you why.
I'm definitely not a teenager anymore, but I was definitely a young christian questioning her sexuality when I was a teenager, and there was just nothing remotely like this on TV at that time. If there had been, I think it might have been a bit easier for me to figure myself out. Much easier, even. I dislike clichés, so I don't like that I'm basically saying the same thing that most queer people over 30 are saying about new media featuring queer representation, but the thing is, there's a reason that we're saying it. And Tropes Aren't Bad. The only thing that was around when I was growing up that had any gay women in it was porn and the L Word. Buffy too I guess, but I never got into it when it was airing (I'm not even sure if I'd have been allowed to watch it, to be frank) and later on, I wasn't interested in the drama and heartbreak. And of course, because I was a young christian, I thought porn was bad (I mean, it's terrible if you're looking for accurate romantic representation, but it's certainly not morally wrong like I thought it was) and because I don't live in the US, I never came across the L Word until I managed to pirate it in university. And while the L Word was massive and so important for representation and visibility... Honestly, I never really liked it. I didn't relate to a bunch of lesbians having sex and being bitchy in LA.
But Teenage Bounty Hunters? Shit. That would have been young Alex's obsession. Or lifeline. Cup of tea. Addiction. Breath of air while feeling like I was drowning? I don't know. Pick one. All of the above. I grew up going to an Anglican, semi-private high school. So while lesbianism wasn't wrong per se; (God still loved the gays - they weren't wrong for loving who they did) it definitely had to be wrong for me. Because it also sure as hell wasn't good. It was definitely no path to happiness. Lesbian was an insult that you used against girls you didn't like on the opposing soccer team. It wasn't until I went on exchange to France when I was 17 that I met girls who were out and proudly, wonderfully, sweetly dating. It's not even like it was illegal or anything, or that the LGBT+ community weren't tirelessly working to be visible and represented. I live in New Zealand. Generally, we're a pretty open, progressive, liberal country. I like to think that most of the time kiwis make pretty sensible decisions in terms of governance (though, believe me, there's always room for improvement). But, there's a difference between what's allowed, and what's socially acceptable. Especially in high school. Especially when you bring religion into the conversation. Or politics. It just wasn't done. Even in public school, you'd be asking to be an outsider.
So I can't satisfactorily express how incredible it was for me to experience the relationship and character arcs of April and Sterling. A couple of staunchly christian girls, falling in love and unashamed of that. Albeit fucking scared. Their storyline resonated with my queer little soul. I was Chapel Prefect in my final year at school. I was an overachiever like April, and I had no idea how potentially gay I was, like Sterling. I wanted to kiss boys and sort of ignored all the crushes I had on the girls I went to school with. I wanted to be a good student and above all, a good person. I believed in a god. In fact, I wanted to believe in a purpose for existence and God so badly, that I chose to continue to believe, even while I wanted to kill myself in my first and second year of university because I felt like I was a bad student and a bad person. I still believe and it still keeps me alive from time to time.
All this is a very dramatic and unfortunately slightly sad way to say that you've got something incredibly special in Teenage Bounty Hunters. And that's just from one perspective. There's so much else that the show brings to the table. So much that it has the potential to. I could talk about racism, or adoption, or classism, or so many other things that I don't really feel I have the experience or understanding to give voice to, and do them justice, but you get the picture.
Finally, I just want to say, I think I got my first recommendation for this show after you'd actually officially cancelled it. And it wasn't from your algorithm, it was from a male co-worker. Somebody I wouldn't have expected to recommend something like this show. Both based on judgements from before and after watching it. And I'm not going to lie, I heavily judged the title when I heard him talk about it, because I thought it sounded pretty frivolous and mindless. But certainly after searching for the show (I'm kind of shocked it was never recommended to me actually), and watching the trailer, I was immediately interested, because it's fucking hilarious. Now, after watching it I'm curious to know what he liked about the show too. So if your algorithm is designed to target viewers you think might be in a show's intended demographic, I feel like it needs tweaking. Also, I feel like you need to give more than two months grace-time for a show after releasing it, before you decide to cancel it. It's kind of tragic finding out about and deciding watching a show even though you know it's cancelled and then having your suspicions confirmed about you loving it. Very Fox and Firefly. Congrats, I guess?
Anyway, I do genuinely want to say thank you for the work that you do and the joy that you've brought me and others through Netflix. I do hope the decision does get reversed, but it is a small hope.
If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading all of this. You're clearly a generous person with your time.
Sincerely,
Alex

hi i just wanted to say i appreciate all your posts that go into the specific dynamics of andrew and neil, especially since a lot of people in the fandom don’t really consider how sex with the two of them would actually work since i’d say a majority of them aren’t mlm. idk it’s just nice to see your thoughts on these things as a mlm myself (sort of. my relationship with gender and sexuality is complicated to say the least). it feels more genuine than a lot of what i see in the fandom
Yeah, fandom can be a lonely place, especially when something that feels like it should represent you... doesn't. Like fandom largely revolves around not just romance, but typically mlm romance, and I never feel seen by it. not the media that creates it, and not the fandom that ships it. So I'm glad to know it feels more genuine and real than most of the stuff you see, it’s nice to know that there were other people who felt the same way about these things. I've mentioned it before but the aftg fandom specifically was really bad for my mental health lmao which is why I only reblog from a handful of people.
I have one mlm friend in fandom, and a few people in a discord I kinda know, but the rest aren’t, but even still just having one other friend who has more similar experiences with me than others is always nice. But it was really cool to hear how he felt the same as me on a lot of aspects about what its like to be a mlm in fandom, even if we don’t have the same opinions on characters or like other characters more than others. If you ever wanna come off anon and chat I'm down with that.
Also, there's never a rush on gender and sexuality, I still don't try to label myself a lot besides ‘I like what I like when I like it’ for both clothes and expression and people I'm attracted to and all that. I used to want to find very specific labels and micro labels within that, and while that's helpful for some people, I was feeling stressed about it and queer is comfortable for me. Identity is a lot, but there is no time limit on anything and there is no rush.
But yeah, on the genuine thing, sometimes I can read something and think to myself: hm I don't think this person has ever had a mlm friend, much less a guy friend, maybe never been close with a guy in general and therefore doesn't have a lot of insight on how... we act I guess lol. Its sort of like when male authors write women super weird but reverse. You don't know who the author is or what their experiences are, and what they write about isn't always projecting–such as how I like to purposefully explore kinks I'm not interested in with characters who I think could fit said kinks to understand them, or authors writing about experiences they haven’t had.
I think it’s bad to assume the characters thoughts are the authors thoughts and the characters trauma and experiences must be the authors as well, but also I've read countless fics with Andrew or Neil POV where they have a very middle class perspective on life, with casual classism that wouldn’t fit two characters who have had unstable living and experienced on and off homelessness. It just shows a perspective that is ooc of the character due to the authors own preconceived ideas. I don't think I'm a good author or anything, I'm teaching myself but its definitely not my top skill, but when I read anything, fic, comic, novels, or whatever, it is something I can see, especially in fandom spaces.
That being said, here's Anton Ego’s quote from Ratatouille:
“In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment.”

@temporalobjects challenged: ♡ + jinwai and pinklei and samin... kyungcha?? lmao
jinwai
Who is the most affectionate? Jin, no contest. He is the one who puts his hands on Iwai frequently like placing them on his shoulders to get them somewhere, caress his hair, let fingertips tap Iwai’s cheeks now and then. The worst part is that his touching can be subtle and so soft because he’s not aware of the effect he can have on poor Iwai so— that’s their life in the future!
Who initiates the handholding? I was going to say Jin but no, this one goes to Iwai. Because handholding is a subtle display of intimacy, I can see Iwai being a bit shy/trying hard-to-be-casual as fingers skitter Jin’s way so he can hold his hand and it is so precious ;_;
Who worries more for the other? Both worry for each other but display it in different ways. Jin is transparent in his concerns so anything he wonders about he will be upfront with Iwai. Iwai may also ask but will probably try to find out more first—
Who is more likely to ask for help? Jin. He can be stubborn but he makes a point to ask for advice if the first attempt at something doesn’t go the way he wants it.
Who is the one always losing the keys? Jin— he can be a bit oblivious sometimes, specially when busy *sweats*
Who leaves little love notes for the other? Jin. He’s going to be the one to put cute little notes in Iwai’s lunch, coffee cup, you name it. But I think Iwai may write him things now and then too bc sometimes he has a hard time expressing himself publicly—
Who can’t sleep unless the other is there? Iwai. Once they get together, he’s gonna get so used to the warm piece of sunshine that the song "you are my sunshine” will resound in his head along with the part of “please don’t take my sunshine away” for the nights when Jin gets up to get stuff ready around the busy seasons. Iwai will probs get up since he can’t sleep and will make coffee for two uwu
Who is more likely to propose to the other? Jin. Though Iwai could also give us the big surprise if Jin decides to wait a bit to be a hundred percent sure Iwai feels entirely comfortable with him.
Who introduced the other to their family first? This is tricky because they met as children and Iwai’s parents know about Jin but! Not in the way Jin’s brothers know about Iwai so uwu Jin takes this one.
Who is more likely to play with the other’s hair? Jin. He is so affectionate he will constantly serve as a body pillow so Iwai can rest properly and will caress his hair until he falls asleep. All because Jin likes to see how pouty his lips become when he sleeps *heart eyes emoji on a different level my dude*
Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated? Jin. Iwai will probably get a few extra kilos haha— it’s that curvature that develops when you get together with someone who expresses their love not only in the physical way but also with acts of service so— no escaping this!
Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other? I think both do after reaching the commitment level. Right now, Iwai doesn’t have a reason to stand up for Jin so he may do it or not, I guess it would depend on how bad the thing would be? But yeah, once committed, it’s a it’s-always-two kind of deal c:
Who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other? Jin. He adores surprising Iwai so he'd be in charge of the small or big surprises c:
Who makes the other pinky promise not to do certain things? Jin. It starts as a game of remember when we did this— and it becomes an adorable habit uwu
Who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch? I think both do. In the rare nights Jin is the one who falls asleep first, Iwai does it uwu and when it’s Iwai, Jin makes his way in the couch and cuddles him.
pinklei
Who is the most affectionate? Pinky. I have no idea how she puts up with such a boring, clueless guy! She is the one who has all the humor and sunshine in this relationship tbh Lei is less than a moon– he’d be Pluto probably!
Who initiates the handholding? Pinky. Again, why does she put up with him, he is oblivious to the basics of romance come oooon!
Who worries more for the other? Lei wins this one finally! He knows Pink is a capable woman and respects her too much to ever think she is dumb, but he also knows that sometimes she forgets important things like having an extra jacket, so he looks out for her in that sense, also providing the food/water, things human bodies need to function. He may be a social klutz but! He at least knows how to take care of Pinky’s health.
Who is more likely to ask for help? Pinky. Lei is too proud and stubborn in spite of his quiet demeanor so he would never admit out loud he needs help with something.
Who is the one always losing the keys? Pinky. Being so energetic, it’s not that she forgets things but with all her moving around, she probably drops them often so Lei has the spare that becomes the unofficial only set of keys and he’s always accompanying her home.
Who leaves little love notes for the other? I think Pinky does this one. Lei doesn’t use a lot of words so his way to express love is even more scarce in the writing—
Who can’t sleep unless the other is there? Lei, probably. Once he gets used to having someone around and holding her through the night, he will need that from there on to finally get some sleep.
Who is more likely to propose to the other? Lei. He sees this as his natural obligation? So it'd be him the one to bend the knee and propose. Half the hospital if not all of it will know about it because he’s going to ask how to make a proposal and what girls want from a proposal and yeah!
Who introduced the other to their family first? I’m not sure about this one but Lei may be the one. He hates his family because they represent that traditionalism and classism he despises but because he was brought up there, he can’t shake off these steps of honor and good manners ingrained into his brain.
Who is more likely to play with the other’s hair? I'm divided. Pinky is affectionate and Lei likes things that are soft and smell nice so I can picture him being happy playing with Pinky’s hair so! Both.
Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated? Both do, but Lei may be more proactive about it by bringing fruit and water with him so when they are on their way to Pinky’s home, she has a snack to replenish her energy without messing her appetite for dinner uwu
Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other? I think both are but Lei may be a bit slower on reacting than Pinky!
Who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other? Pinky— he has no sense of surprise, the only one he’ll give her will be the proposal night xD
Who makes the other pinky promise not to do certain things? Pinkyyyyy. Because she is cute and Lei needs to be explained things like a child sometimes so, it works uwu
Who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch? Lei. During long shifts and all, he makes a point of checking on Pinky so when she is resting, he will always put a soft blanket over her before leaving quietly c:
kyungcha xD
Who is the most affectionate? Sacha, Kyungmin doesn’t stand a chance XD
Who initiates the handholding? I think it would also be Sacha. Kyungmin is too self-conscious to battle past that and be upfront about his affections physically. Inside the room, he’s passionate and stuff but outside from their nest? Yeah, not so much of an affectionate sweet thing ^^:
Who worries more for the other? Kyungmin does. It’s not that Sacha doesn’t worry it’s more that Kyungmin is constantly worrying so that’s why!
Who is more likely to ask for help? Sacha, because Kyungmin is a dumbass too stubborn to admit when he needs help. Unless it’s about something manual-related like fixing things at home xD
Who is the one always losing the keys? Sacha probably, Kyungmin may be annoyed about this quite a lot so he keeps an eye on where Sacha placed his keys to remind him about it until he learns his habits and is all like, keys? yeah, behind your jacket.
Who leaves little love notes for the other? I think Sacha would be the one but occasionally, Kyungmin will slip a few notes like “Fighting!” in his lunch box and stuff c:
Who can’t sleep unless the other is there? Kyungmin probably complains that Sacha is too big and warm but he really loves that, the hypocrite xD
Who is more likely to propose to the other? I think it'd be Sacha. Kyungmin is too afraid of disrupting something that’s already good even when he wants more so he wouldn’t want to push it. *like I said, dumbass*
Who introduced the other to their family first? Kyungmin did and it’s a total accident. Probably the whole family accompanied him to the orphanage when they realized he looked like he was in love xD
Who is more likely to play with the other’s hair? Kyungmin would do and not notice he's doing it until it’s too late. It becomes a habit uwu
Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated? Kyungmin. He has the service-kind-of-love, so he makes sure to get Sacha good meals and there’s always either nice tea waiting for him on rainy days or fresh water in the fridge.
Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other? Kyungmin would be quick to snap and defend Sacha but Sacha wouldn’t be too far behind if it’s a reverse situation, he just wouldn’t be vicious and violent like Kyungmin—
Who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other? I think Sacha would be the one after he notices that Kyungmin likes that kind of thing c:
Who makes the other pinky promise not to do certain things? Sacha because he is a total sweetheart and Kyungmin can bitch all he wants about how this is ridiculous but he will take these promises to heart!
Who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch? Kyungmin. Again, little acts of service c:

About your new AU. When toddler Rapunzel cut her hair did she cut all of it or just some strands. If she cut it ALL why was Gothel still alive? On a side note Gothel probably died by the time Rapunzel's an adult from lack of magic. Also, would the moonstone trigger Rapunzel's magic like the rocks did in canon or is Rapunzel completely separated from the sundrop?
The post is actually a contribution for Rapunzel Appreciation Week, not really a “new AU”. I wasn’t expecting there to be so much fandom interest (which is super sweet of y'all!), so because of that I guess I might turn it into a fic someday. Honestly, I made the edit just because the idea seemed fun, not as some kind of fic announcement or anything, haha. Still, I do have answers to your questions:
She cut it all, which is why her hair is brown in the image
Gothel is still alive long enough to abandon Rapunzel because she got a dose of healing very shortly before Rapunzel cut it (idk if she survived after that but tbh her character is not important in this universe beyond giving Rapunzel abandonment issues and separating her from her parents, since it’s supposed to be more of a role reversal between her and Eugene + a commentary on classism)
No rocks whatsoever because Zhan Tiri ain’t a thing in this AU (also Cass’ parentage isn’t who it is in the show bc that’s the beauty of AUs), so the moonstone would have only triggered the magic if she touched it, which she didn’t because Eugene hid it so as to convince her and Lance to make a deal. And, uh, when I say Eugene “hid” the moonstone, I mean he may have panicked...and er, swallowed it. Whoops.

Lupe was having the luckiest bad day of their life, and if it didn't let up soon, they were going to collapse from the stress.
First, it had been the flooding—an event that easily could have killed a dozen people or more, but from which Lupe had escaped without getting so much as a toe in the water. Then it was getting trapped in the swanky office building, where they were sure to get caught and arrested, only to see on the news that the only thing stopping them from leaving was some weirdo up on the roof. And then, it was ARCOM's killer robot and its—handler?—which had almost shot Lupe dead on the spot but decided not to at the last second, instead chasing off after the weirdo in the mask and opening, however unintentionally, Lupe's escape.
So Lupe had hidden in the stairwell in case the Division showed up before the water cleared (they hadn't), and had taken the back-alleys and underpasses out of downtown in case the regular cops were looking for them (they weren't), and was now holed up in a booth at the back of the one Powered bar in Albuquerque, accompanied only by the tinnitus ringing in their ears, nursing a gin and tonic and supposing they ought to feel relieved.
They didn't.
An acrylic nail tapping on the table brought them back to the present. Their favorite bartender, Jess, was standing table-side, rainbow dreadlocks bright against dark skin.
"Starting to pick up in here, honey," she said. "You might wanna start thinking about heading out, before you lose all your elbow room."
"You can't just let me out the back again?" Lupe asked.
"I'd love to, except Cindy's working tonight, and she's been looking for an excuse to fire me."
"Is Cindy the racist one?"
"Take a wild guess."
Lupe winced. "Okay. Thanks for letting me know. Is it okay if I finish my drink first, or. . . ?"
"You got time. I'll get you a lemonade to go so we ain't just kicking you out. On the house."
"Are you sure? You don't have to."
She pressed a hand to her chest and sighed hugely. "If I don't, you might leave us a bad review."
"I couldn't even if I wanted to," they said.
"It's a joke, we're already drowning in bad reviews from normies. Zero stars, service was terrible and it was full of mutants, I felt sooooo threatened when everybody got mad at me for calling them slurs."
Lupe snorted. "Has that happened?"
"Weekly, honey, weekly."
"I'm sorry."
She grinned. "It's all good. They never stick around too long." She tapped her nail on the table again, and a breath of blue flame rolled up the back of her hand. "Lemme get you that lemonade before I forget."
Lupe gave her a lazy, two-finger salute as she moved off. They sucked down a few good gulps of their gin and tonic. Maybe Jess had gone a little heavy on the gin, or maybe it was just that Lupe hadn't eaten in almost twenty-four hours, but it was hitting them harder than usual. They checked their pockets for change and found about four dollars—and since they were getting kicked out before they could get another drink, maybe they'd go get a burger, instead. As they stuffed the cash back in their pocket, somebody pulled up to their booth.
"Mind if I join you?"
He was white, mousy, and freckly, with short-cropped brown hair and a midwestern accent. He was wearing thick-rimmed glasses, a green flannel over a band T-shirt, dark jeans washed a few too many times. He had a drink in each hand.
"I—I was actually just leaving, sorry, it's all yours," said Lupe, scooching outward.
The guy's face fell. "You were?"
"Yeah, it just—I just have to—" They cast around for Jess, but she was nowhere to be seen. They didn't need the free lemonade, anyway; they should get out of here while they could, before this poor guy put a foot in the wrong place and got electrocuted.
"I guess I have to drink both of these, now," he sighed, looking down at the two drinks. One was a beer. The other was clear and bubbly and had a slice of orange in it.
"Well," said Lupe. They fidgeted. "You weren't—you didn't—did you. . . ?"
He offered the cocktail to them. "It was supposed to be for you," he said hopefully.
Lupe fidgeted some more. The room wasn't too crowded yet, and one drink couldn't hurt, especially if it was free. Jess was up at the bar now, busy with a large group of young women that had just come in. Lupe gestured to the other side of the booth.
"I'll save you from the spare drink," they said. "Just be careful where you put your feet, I run at a pretty lethal voltage."
The guy stopped halfway to sitting down. He stared. Lupe shrugged.
"No wonder you're back here all by yourself," the guy said faintly.
"Yeah," said Lupe. "It's fine if you—"
The guy slid the rest of the way into the booth and pulled his feet up after him, sitting cross-legged. With one finger, he pushed the cocktail across to Lupe.
"It's a Tom Collins," he said. "You struck me as the ginny type."
"That—that's a nine-dollar drink," Lupe objected, torn between being flattered and gravely suspicious.
"Yeah," said the guy. He gestured to his own. "And this is a three-dollar beer, split the difference."
Lupe struggled for words. They looked from the cocktail to the guy and back again. They swirled the tiny straws around in case it stirred up any suspicious white powder, which it didn't.
"What did you say your name was?" Lupe asked the guy.
"Zach," he said. "He/him pronouns, if anybody's counting."
"Oh—oh," said Lupe. Something fluttered in their chest, a sigh of relief. "I'm Lupe. Um. They/them."
"Pleased to meet you," said Zach. "I'd shake your hand, but—"
"Yeah, don't—don't do that. So, you—so—you're . . . Powered? I mean, Watt's, it's sort of—it's not like they card you, and if that's too personal, obviously, you don't have to answer, I just. . . ."
"Barely," Zach said, amused but taking pity. "Just enough to make my normie friends nervous."
"Do you mind if I ask what it is?"
"Eh, sure. You showed me yours, I'll show you mine."
In the blink of an eye, he was gone—into thin air, without so much as a puff of smoke or a flash of light. Before Lupe had gotten done being surprised, though, he was back, scrunching his nose like he needed to sneeze.
"That's not barely," said Lupe, astounded.
"No, it doesn't work like you think it does. For example—cameras. It doesn't work on cameras, for some reason. I'm like a reverse-vampire or something. And it gives me migraines if I hold it for more than a minute or so."
"Ohhh, yeah, that—that's not great. I guess it's fun at parties?"
"It's the best at parties," Zach said viciously, grinning. "I hate parties. And now nobody can make me stay, because as soon as nobody's looking, I can literally disappear."
Lupe chuckled and had a sip of their cocktail. It was mild and delicious, like a carbonated gin-lemonade, and there was no hint of a salty Rohypnol aftertaste. Maybe, they thought, this guy really was just being nice.
"Silver linings?" they said. "I don't know, I haven't been to a party in . . . Christ, probably twenty years."
Zach sucked in a breath through his teeth, wincing. "Yeah, what with the voltage and everything, I guess that's probably a little fraught. Don't worry, you're not missing much. Parties suck."
"But bars don't?"
"So long as there's no parties going on in them."
Lupe stirred their drink, being careful not to touch the table. At the bar, Jess was entertaining the group of young women, lighting their drinks on fire with her fingers (to their great delight). Zach watched them, amused, his chin on his hand, his beer untouched.
"Um," said Lupe. "I um. Look, before, um . . . I appreciate the drink, and the—the company, but I just want to make it clear that I'm not really, um, interested in—in—not that you're not—but I'm, sort of, very asexual? So—"
Zach turned back to them, startled. "What? No, no, that's not what this is about. I'm straight."
"You're what?" said Lupe. Their face went hot. "Oh, no, of course, right, I just—"
"Not that you're not a good-looking guy—sorry, person. You're just not my type."
"No, yeah, same, but I just kind of . . . forgot about straight people. Hahah."
"You don't get out much, huh," said Zach, with that same amused-pity look from before.
"I'm homeless, I'm always out," said Lupe, and then realized that it was a top-tier idiot thing to say.
"Holy shit, seriously?" Zach said. "You don't look—okay, you kind of do look homeless, but I figured that was just a fashion choice."
"And you don't look like an ignorant dick, but here we are," Lupe retorted. Maybe they'd had a little too much to drink. Whatever. A remark like that deserved a little snappishness.
Zach winced. "Okay, I deserved that," he said. "But—man, that's rough. Do you need a place to stay, or something? I could put you up at a hotel for a couple of days, or—"
"Don't, just—don't," Lupe sighed, holding up a hand. "It doesn't work. Unless you can find a hotel that doesn't use keycards, it won't work. Just—forget I said anything."
"Are you sure?" Zach pressed. "You could stay at my place, if you needed to. Not forever, I'm kind of already maxed out on roommates, but for a while. Until you get—"
"Get my feet back underneath me?" Lupe filled in. "Sure, I just have to find a job where they don't require you to touch any computers, machines, or other people. Oh, and it has to be no-experience-required, too, and no high school diploma, and not need a physical address or an ID or a phone number, and and and. It won't happen. Trust me."
Zach stared at them, full-pity, looking like a lost puppy in the rain. Lupe shook their head and muttered in Spanish under their breath and looked someplace else. The pity was always the hardest to take.
"Well—do you want dinner, then?" Zach asked. "I could buy you dinner, at least."
"I don't want your goddamn charity," Lupe snapped. A bolt cracked off their wrist and earthed in the center of the table. Someone shrieked. Zach froze, whey-faced. The smell of burnt lacquer rose in a plume. Lupe ground their teeth and took deep breaths and waited for the whine in their ears to soften. Before it did, Jess sidled over.
"Hey, honey," she said. "Hate to butt in, but I think it's about time for you to be heading on out."
"Yeah," said Lupe. They abandoned the rest of their cocktail and got up, dizzy. "Sorry about the table."
"Don't worry about it. You ain't hardly the worst thing that's happened to a table in here."
They faked a smile, nodded to her, and headed for the door. Despite the crowd, a wide path opened for them. Every eye in the place watched as they went.

Roswell NM 2x05
My thoughts of this episode could basically be summed up on “Extremely Mixed Feelings” lmfao.
Let’s start with Rosa, obviously. Gosh, I adore her. ADORE her. She feels so lively and real and colourful among... well, everything and everyone else xD. She did even in death. She makes this show better by being the point of contention in the narrative. The mixed feelings come when she interacts with anyone else, because though she remains her incredible self, (almost) everyone else isn’t and I keep chaffing against the dominant narrative :P. She’s also hilarious lmao. I love every one of her zings xD. The “bitch-ass aliens” was obviously the winner, but her calling Max & Isobel’s nonsense “psychic twincest weirdness” was close LOL.
Like, I don’t know how I feel about the show even JOKING about Rosa possibly forgiving Max & Co. The scene itself with Rosa DEMANDING her own room was perfect, but. Yeah. Don’t even joke about that xD. To add that, I actually really love her scenes with Max, both in previous episodes and this one, when he briefly convinced her of stopping his resurrection (I kind of love that the episode was so close to Easter, btw, it’s so on the nose xDD). The energy between the actors works REALLY well and I find myself suddenly paying attention to Max, which hadn’t happened so far xDD. However, I’d enjoy those scenes even more if I could be reasurred that Rosa is always going to have mixed feelings at best about him, and will never be reduced to prop him or Liz/Max (like in the moment where Rosa almost has to comfort Liz about Max loving her. Leave my kid out of this pls). But. Yeah. I also have some guesses as to where the Rosa vs. Max storyline will go now that a.) she has more control of her new powers, and b.) his resurrection is the one that’ll follow the Came Back Wrong pattern, but they’re half-formed/half-wishful thinking so far lol.
I love love love the physicality of Rosa’s scenes with Liz too, even if sometimes I’m bothered by other elements. I’m just amazed by how the actresses manage to make it come across that despite the obvious visuals, despite how ~youthful and reckless Rosa feels... she’s the older sister, still. That’s how she feels, and Liz gets ~swayed by this. Like how she bundles herself agaisnt Rosa’s chest for comfort (and in the second one, the transition to that after Liz holds Rosa’s face in her hands), or how Rosa talks about her “sweet little sister”, etc. It also helps making the relationship feel less proppy than it would otherwise --younger sisters doing something for their older ones feels different than the reverse, idk. I have Thoughts about this but they’re all tangled up with myself projecting stuff on them, so idk what I’m trying to convey here xDD
I’m less conflicted about Rosa/Isobel. STAY AWAY FROM HER ISOBEL. Seriously, I full on despise her now. Fuck her. At the beginning of the season it looked like I might start finding her interesting, but nah. That’s over. And in particular I want her as far away as possible from Rosa. I’m even surprised by the strength of my reaction lol, but I wanted to yell at her to take her dirty paws off Rosa xD (seriously, the scene where she puts her hand on Rosa’s chest felt so so creepy? Was that just me? Add that in Isobel’s comment about having a “threeway” and deugh. GO AWAY ISOBEL). And frankly, it’s hard to miss how Isobel is always at her worst with women of color (I’m wary of her attitude to men of color, after the blatant sexualization/mind control thing with Kyle or all her bullshit with Arturo, too). Her comments on Rosa’s addiction (let alone assaulting her or locking her body in a closet ofc) didn’t help her case. I really, really wish Rosa had chocked a bitch xD. BTW, I’ve seen people attribute Isobel’s shittiness to her connection to Max and his darkness when a.) we saw NO SIGNS of this, and b.) she’s been terrible from day one, okay xD. If the show goes there to absolve her of responsibility like it did in s1... ugh.
My connection was crappy af last week and I somehow missed Michael’s “help me move a body” scene until I saw the parallel done with the one this week and... did this bitch really joke about desecrating Rosa’s body in front of Liz’s face?? (who said nothing because she’s now completely on pod-people’s POV land, ofc. I had flashbacks to Delena joking about Caroline’s rape right there, too). Seriously, the pod-people, ALL of them, have an enourmous debt with Rosa (EVEN MORE NOW), and I really, really wish she collected.
I wish we’d seen Arturo & Arturo-Rosa stuff this episode. It’ll still be tainted by the circumstances (*hates Isobel even more*), but I’m very curious about them. And about how Rosa’s bio-father ties to this stuff --that side of Rosa’s family is being left out of things so far and I don’t like it, tbh. It seems to be simply because it’s too far from the pod-siblings circle of influence ¬¬. Or about how Arturo is processing all this (he still thinks Rosa drove and killed the two other girls and that Max is A Very Nice Boy *barfs*. I seriously resent the very real posibility that Rosa’s story will never be untangled, to her father and to the town).
Not-Rosa-centric stuff under the cut, I guess, because this is getting long xD
I also have mixed feelings about Maria’s scenes with Alex (and Maria’s scenes in general). OTOH, she looked amazing (this is important, js. It’s such a shame we didn’t see Michael’s reaction to that last outfit of hers *-*); I love the actor’s easy chemistry, too; and I think it’s very, very interesting, that Alex basically nudged Maria towards Michael and Miluca. OTOH, I dislike how the conversation immediately turned to supporting him, and especially the false equivalences between Maria falling for Michael and Alex contributing to the lies to her (though I don’t find him as responsibly for that as Michael and especially Liz --since it was Michael’s secret and he planned and struggled to tell her, while Liz was pretty comfortable keeping her in the dark except for her own emotional needs, and knew too well why those secrets could cost), or between looking at your mother’s search history and forgiving someone for keeping you in the dark and endangering your life, js. That he guilted her into forgiving Liz (and so fullfilling Maria’s prophecy about how Liz only struggled to tell her because she wanted support, and my own about how little her anger was allowed to last) made it worse.
I feel terrible for Kyle. You could feel the toll he’s taken smh. My heart broke a little when he told Liz “you called, I broke the speed limit”, too :/. His relationship with his mother is hanging on the balance after all his lies too, which doesn’t bode to well for him either. I liked the scene between him and Alex, at least, though I still don’t think I could ever ship them, given Kyle’s romantic history with someone that ALSO was hung up on another person, js.
Other people have talked about how Alex’s scenes with Michael often highlight his classism and how little it’s talked about in this fandom, but yeah. His comments about Michael’s “wasting” his life... I Felt that.
Related to that, Max’s comment about how someone “has to clean up [Michael’s] messes” is part of why the pod-siblinghood thing is never ever ever going to work for me, sns xDD. Sure, it’s mostly because I don’t like Max or Isobel at all, or Michael 40-50% of the time, but yeah, things like that, or Isobel assuring him of the BLATANT lie that Michael means as much to her and Max as each other... they make it harder to get into the ~spirit lol. Another issue is how TERRIBLE the editing to make them appear younger looks xDD
I had to, HAD TO, roll my eyes at Max’s martyrdom. Ooooh, he’s not doing this for HIMSELF, he would NEVER care about being in PAIN, he’s doing this for US. And the narrative conveniently doesn’t take him at his word and saves him, ofc, because’s he’s a lead and that’s what’s up. It was interesting seeing the other characters coming to acceptance at first, however --I hope it’s a Sign. There are other Signs (of Max’s narrative maaaaaaybe weak spots) that really *pop* in this episode. Like the fact that there’s doubt over who is more important to him, Liz or Isobel. In a show with a really strong male lead, the answer would unquestionably be Liz: she’d know it, Isobel would know it, we’d all know it. And sure, I know a lot of people would say that it’s “better” (?) for a show to acknowledge the ~importance of familial and platonic bonds~ and what not, but c’mon. I don’t doubt that if Liz had been white things would be different. But that’s not the case here. And there are strong arguments for Isobel being number one... like the fact that this amnesia plot in the promo seems to ONLY involve Liz? I mean, he seems to remember Isobel just fine. A male lead forgetting the love of his life is very, very tricky. OTOH this is good in the sense that I’m all for anything that makes Max take a fall... but his & Liz’s stories are too tangled up and I’d fear she’d surely go down with him :/

“The First Thing I Remember is Fire”
Just a stream of thoughts.
Dammit the logo caught on fire. This is why they didn’t want open flames on the sets!
Gelfling are just super racist against Podlings.
A Guard: “Shut up, you’ll give everyone nightmares with that wailing!”
Hup: -sings louder, out of spite-
Sooooooooo Deet has decided to be a cryptid.
For Gelfling are a superstitious and cowardly lot.
Flew around wailing and screeching until A Guard and B Guard took off in a frighten and then rescued Hup.
“Thra’s true balance will be found when natural order is sound.”
Dark Crystal loves its weird, random prophecies. But they’ve got nothing on Redwall.
-Brea, breaks the secret door-
Why is there a secret room at the end of the secret passage under a secret door in the throne secretly that has the symbols of the seven clans?
Brea: “Oh, its a puzzle!”
Hey, yeah, this is coming off a little Legend of Zelda…
“I have to put the clans in their natural order, from highest to lowest, and then Thra will be in balance” =| ffs brea
You done learned a classism, growing up.
Dammit puzzle room, don’t reward her for classism! Orrr racism?
Brea is having a hard time ranking the clans once she gets past the ‘well obviously the Vapra are the best’
Wow, good job, modern puppeteers. You’ve made the Skeksis eating even grosser. And in the original movie it was a sort of cathartic trash the set sort of scene.
Wow, very gross.
Oh, this specific gross banquet is in honor of the Ornamentalist. So of course everyone spends the entire time whining about how food is like ash in their mouths compared to drinking soul goo.
Soul goo is crackier than crack. One sip and the Skeksis are all super hooked on it and already jonesing for another hit.
And the Ornamentalist is just annoyed.
Ornamentalist: “Essence, essence, essence! That’s all any of you talk about since I returned. It’s my party. Talk about me!”
Of course, the Ornamentalist would gladly try a hit but there’s none left.
Awww, they didn't invite Scientist to the party. They locked him in his lab until he finishes his mad science chores.
All the Skeksis are talking about wiping out the entire Gelfling population and Chamberlain is the only one thats not stupid about the horrific act of eating souls to maintain youth.
Chamberlain: “A wise shepherd does not cull entire herd, yes? We should take only what Gelfling we need to survive!”
Gourmand: “Moderation is for the meek!”
I again wonder how these dinguses managed to rule the planet for a thousand years without using it all up.
Chamberlain just called the General a coward. And the other Skeksis are just going FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
General: “I welcome war!”
Chamberlain: “Because you are too thick-headed to use brain!”
General: -affronted gasp-
And the Emperor is too busy PULLING HIS FINGER OFF to pay much attention
Gross. You’re getting pus… everything was already disgusting and you’ve found the way to make it worse, Emperor
So he wants instant results and starts yelling at the Chamberlain who can just shrink down and go ‘he started it’
Aww Emperor just dumped Chamberlain as his favorite counselor and his new bff is the general
Woow the general wasn’t kidding. The instant Chamberlain doesn’t have the Emperor’s favor, the General smacks Chamberlain to the floor and stomps on his hand.
I almost feel bad for him.
And now several minutes of Aughra complaining about how old she is and yelling at the ground to shut up until someone shoots plot arrows around her.
And the Emperor rolls into the lab to mock the Scientist for having no friends. Wow.
So the Scientist finished repairing the soul suck machine, with the bondage chair upgrade like in the movie.
Emperor: “How many Gelfling must we drain to cheat death for all eternity?”
Scientist: ‘thats fucked up, dude’
Or more seriously, the Scientist is actually worried about the Darkening and worries that draining Gelfling will cause it to spread faster.
But the Emperor is a global decaying denier and tells Scientist to tell him what he wants to hear.
Or he’ll kill his pet lab animals. Which the Scientist actually seems to like. I mean the animals, not the choking of them.
Scientist: “Fifty Gelfling, every trine!” I’m split between thinking ‘wow thats awful’ and ‘wow thats sustainable’
Chamberlain is feeling sad because Emperor doesn’t love him most anymore so he’s blowing an ominous horn.
Oh, another new Skeksis! SkekMal, the Hunter!
And all the other Skeksis are like ‘aw fuck not that guy’
Its interesting to think that from how much all the Skeksis seem to despise each other, thats actually them getting along and liking each other, and there are other Skeksis that they just don’t like at all.
WOW SKEKMAL LOOKS SPOOKY
THE GROUND IS ANGRY
THE SKY IS ANGRY!
WHY IS EVERYTHING ANGRY
Oh theres Aughra, of course she’s angry. She’s angry or peeved or irritated or disgruntled.
Aughra: “I will go no further!” -many plot arrows- “... I will go a bit further.”
I hadn’t gotten a good view yet but Aughra has a cool cape.
Oh hey, a new UrRu! This day brings a bounty. He’s the Archer who has been shooting arrows adjacent to Aughra.
Archer: “Thra still sings”
Aughra: “Then why don’t I hear it?”
Archer: “Because you turned your eye away from Thra and towards the stars.”
Hearing that from the Skeksis is just audacious but hearing it from an UrRu makes it hurt.
Aughra: “I trusted the Skeksis to look after Thra! I took their word!”
Archer: “And their gifts”
GET DUNKED ONNNNNN i guess.
Having four arms must help with archery. But apparently having arthritis in all of those arms doesn’t.
Archer shoots arrow straight up into the air and has it land right at her feet. And vanishes while she’s watching it go.
Aughra: “You could have just said this! Clearly, succinctly! Without all the walking!”
Archer is the troll UrRu
Ohhh, I bet Archer and Hunter are counterparts. BECAUSE THEY’RE BOTH BATMAN
Archer does the vanishing when he feels the conversation is ended part and Hunter appears out of nowhere to give Chamberlain a frighten.
Hunter: “What is the prey?”
Chamberlain: “A Gelfling”
Hunter: “Nope. Bye.”
But Chamberlain talks him into it anyway because talking people into things is what Chamberlain does.
Although first he tries to make the Hunter feel sorry for his, the Chamberlain’s, reverse in fortunes by whining that the General hurt his hand but the Hunter just. Doesn’t. Care. About castle politics. He wouldn’t be out in the night being batman if he did.
But Chamberlain does manage to somehow convince him that Rian is worthy prey.
Now the General is charge of Gurjin’s interrogation and he immediately cattle prods him several times and straps him into the soul suck machine. Welp.
Gurjin, you’re wonderfully defiant and snarky.
General: “I will ask you once again, WHERE IS THE FUGITIVE RIAN?”
Gurjin, having just been partially soul sucked: “Have you checked the Great Smerth? It’s particularly lovely in spring.”
The Emperor rolls in and its like dad came home and caught the boys misbehaving.
Scientist: “I told him not to do it!”
General: “I… I was just introducing myself to the Gelfling!”
Emperor: =__=
OH MY GOD BREA HAS JUST BEEN TRYING TO BRUTE FORCE THE PUZZLE THIS ENTIRE TIME
She’s just been trying different combinations and writing down what doesn’t work.
Brea: “‘Thra’s true balance will be found when the natural order is sound’… but there is no natural order because no clan is above any of the others! It isn’t a puzzle! It’s a lie!”
Good job overcoming your prejudices, Brea!
Also, apparently refusing to rank the clans was the correct answer. This puzzle room is smart.
Hey what. Hey um what. There’s this stone dinosaur now what.
Its kind of cute.
YODA????
IS THAT YODA???
So the rock creature is named Lore and it has like… rock grooved cylinders and a rock phonograph pick and like a recorded Yoda voice that drops exposition
Yoda: “Lore has imprinted on you. He is now your guardian and will protect you on your journey to the Circle of the SUns. There you will find the key to free Gelfing from Skeksis power forever.”
Oh.
Wait, who put this here? If the All-Maudra is NOW deeply in the Skeksis’ pockets then who and when put a secret room under her throne? And who knew enough to put a rock puppy in a secret room with a prerecorded message that the Skeksis were up to nooooo good. If someone knew all along that the Skeksis were jerks, why bury a message about it instead of doing something?
And then Seladon shows up and is like “THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE”
I’m not sure what the Gelfling guards were going to do to a rock monster with little spears anyway.
And now Rian has wandered into the Podling village. Hopefully he manages to be less racist than everyone else (except Deet) that interacts with them.
Wait, is that Rian? Then who is the other hooded gelfling and why are there ominous scare strings?
Podlings just love to party. They’re the Michelangelo of Thra’s races.
-Podling picks up entire keg and sprays it into another Podling’s mouth-
Rian gets a free drink because an old lady Podling wants to flirt at him across the room.
But his heart is too tender after losing the love of his life and I’m sure he won’t have room for a new love anytime soon.
Gurjin’s sister is hardcore. Shows up and puts Rian at knifepoint to ransom him off to get Gurjin back.
Oh and Cool Sister Tavra also shows up to also try to capture Rian for murdering a member of the Vapra (which he didn’t).
Oh Cool Sister Tavra, why’d you have to be racist at the Drunchens?
Rian: “Will someone just please fucking dreamfast with me so we can resolve this damn plot?”
Entirely new character Kylan: “Yeah I’m game” “The Skeksis may rule the land, but they do not rule my heart.”
Damn, entirely new character Kylan, you’re dope.
Tavra also decides that if entirely new character Kylan is going to do it, then she’s going to do it too.
And Gurjin’s sister gets peer pressured into doing it too.
FINALLY dreamfasting does what it was designed to do and shortcut past doubt and suspicion so we can get on with it.
Oh hey, Rian’s dad wanders in (geez Rian is bad at hiding if everyone found him at the same time) and also gets in on this dreamfast.
It feels a little weirder though because he gets in when it was already ongoing and its like weird because everyone else consented to the dreamfast and he just invited himself in.
But hey it lets Rian make up with his dad so, sure.
Dreamfasting also apparently can create- oh dreametching. Yeah they did mention that could happen.
So now Rian, entirely new character Kylan, and Dadrian are going to the All-Maudra to get her to rally the Gelflings against the Skeksis.
And Gurjin’s sister Naia and Tavra are going to the castle to free Gurjin.
I caaaaan’t help but feeeeeel that if Tavra went with Rian’s group they’d be able to convince the All-Maudra more easily but surrrrrrrrrre do whateverrrrrr
Unless you get captured and killed, Tavra and Naia. I’d be disgruntled at that.
Its kind of weird you have this group of plucky youths and also Rian’s dad who is like the wizened old man compared to them.
Wait, where IS Kylan? Did he go with the castle group after all?
Wait, shouldn’t Rian dad go on the castle mission since he’s the boss guard? And would make it easier for them  to-
Oh, I see. He has to be killed by the Hunter to show how serious the situation is.
Sorry, RIan’s dad. You’re the sacrificial lamb.
I mean, it hasn’t happened yet, but I bet it will-
OH HI DEET!
Deet and Rian just barely cross each other’s paths again. Its a small world after all.
Rian: “Do you remember [father-son bonding activity]?”
Rian Dad: “Ahhh I see how that memory we both share would be useful here.”
HOLY SHIT the Hunter can book. All the other Skeksis are like lumbering around and feeling old and he’s jumping in trees. Maybe fresh air IS good for you.
And he’s a puppet or a costume or a costume puppet so holy shit.
Rian tries to sword fight the Hunter but like…. The weight advantage is very much the Hunter’s. He’s just easily pushing the Gelfling around
HOLY SHIT HIS TWO EXTRA ARMS AREN'T ATROPHIED HE’S SKEKSIS GENERAL GRIEVOUS
Hunter: “You have heart…. I’ll take that too.”
Oh no I was wrong! Rian Dad wasn’t the sacrificial lamb! He was the heroic sacrifice!
He tackled the Hunter into a pit of angry earth and the Hunter seems pretty okay with that as long as he takes someone with him. What an enigmatic guy.
Oh. never mind. Hunter is still alive. He’s too angry and spry for the ground to eat.
I was about to say what a shame it was to introduce the guy and immediately get him eaten by the ground.
And also Riandad’s sacrifice was pointless because the Hunter immediately captures Rian and absconds with him.
Deet and Hup must be very confused coming into this plot branch with no context.

Ok I need to know your thoughts about this Green Book mess
... pray for me anon XD
anyway, never mind that my general thought is that I’m really sad the mule didn’t compete this round because then it’d have deserved all the awards hands down........
tldr: the fact that people are outraged is the proof that tumblr at large can’t recognize classism when it hits you in the face.
in longer words: 95% of the hot takes I’m reading are Patently False And It Shoes People Haven’t Seen That Movie.
in much longer words: counting that I haven’t seen all the nominees but I did see both blakkk/lansman (which from now will be BKKK) and blackpanther and green book (and borap but that one wasn’t gonna win best movie anyway so) and I guess that is where the crux is, so, in order.
bkkk was obviously the best movie of the lot quality speaking. in an ideal world, it would have one. except that bkkk is a movie that’s heavily political and if y’all think that the oscars would give a prize to the heavily political movie that directly criticizes the administration in power then y’all missed the part where that’s not what happens at the oscars. last time it happened it was 1978 and the deer hunter won and I still don’t know wtf was the jury’s state of grace at that point, but in 1980 they had apocalypse now in the list and kramer vs kramer won. like. guys. if you have APOCALYPSE NOW on the list and anything else wins in the major categories then you’re a joke. and tbh it surprises me that spike l/ee is still hoping he might snag a major win that’s not for screenplay with these parameters - they’re not gonna go there. hasn’t happened since ‘78. come on;
bp was not a best movie flick. like, guys: it’s not even the best mcu film around as far as I’m concerned and while it most likely deserved the technical awards..... seriously? like. if neither GB nor bkkk won then any other movie on the list had better shots than bp. I can’t even think people seriously assume it was best movie material or ON PAR WITH BKKK as in, ‘if bkkk doesn’t win then THAT ONE should have won’. like, no;
now: green book was a *safe* pick in the sense that it wasn’t as heavy-handed as bkkk when it came to be political so it was the perfect choice if they wanted to go like ‘oh hey see we gave the award to the movie about racism without giving it to the one raising the middle finger to donald trump’, but differently from moon/light (which according to me was the most political political win of the last ten years like guys sorry that movie was nowhere near as good as people said back then and I found it incredibly overrated, and before you tell me that it’s because I didn’t understand it: exactly the point. the wire is one of my fave shows ever and it tacked all the things moon/light tried to except that it did it vastly better and I actually got it for how well it was written, moon/light completely failed in that sense and I’m glad if it was a good movie for the people it was directed to but it didn’t engage beyond that target imvho but never mind that) it actually tackled very well a series of issues I never see discussed in US cinema when it comes to *racism-themed* movies and I thought it was a really well-made movie that nailed a lot of things especially when it came to how classism and racism interject themselves in the discourse and how you don’t get out of discarding one of them so easily.
specifically, with SPOILERS FROM THE MOVIE under the cut SO GO AHEAD AT WILL OR NOT:
now: all the posts ‘this is the usual movie about the white guy who gets the black friend’ already are obviously from people who haven’t seen it because they missed the basic point, as in: that the white guy is poor and uneducated and isn’t *racist* because he’s a terrible person, he is out of ignorance and not knowing any better BUT at the same time he’s not so narrow-minded that he doesn’t have fairly forward opinions on other -isms (see THAT REVEAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE after which he goes like ‘I’ve been a bouncer in most of new york’s night clubs do you think I mind that thing’ which is a thing the audience wouldn’t have thought since italian-american men from the 50s/60s notoriously came from a fairly -PHOBIC culture in that specific sense), and that the guy being italian-american ie a *white* category that back then did not have *white privilege* put him in a lower class position than the black guy;
on the other side, it was spelled that the black guy’s issue was the contrary in the sense that he’s rich, he’s cultured, he speaks five languages, he’s not a stereotype and since people want stereotypes or expect them, he can’t seem to please either side and feels alienated from both, which I think is a discourse that should be way more relevant in a website where people talk all the time about people of color not being stereotypes and so on;
like the entire fucking point of that movie is that white guy overcomes his racism unlearning his ignorance and black guy has a few realizations about how classism works and reconnects with his heritage throughout the entire thing;
and the fact that it was the black guy explaining the white guy how to write the poetic love letters without grammar mistakes and got him to appreciate finer things in life while the white guy helped him get down to earth (which he plot-wise definitely needed - he was unhappy af before XD) *and* at the same time the movie never fucking forgot that skin color > money when it comes to systematical racism in the south (ie the scene where they get stopped by the southern policeman and white guy punches him bc he basically told him that being italian-american was being half-the-n-word and black guy tells him ‘yeah well I handled that my entire life you could deal with it once’ was FAIRLY DAMNED OBVIOUS even if it also showed that it’s Not How Things Should Go) was imvo a very good narrative choice/balancing;
also, I was really appreciating that scene where don asks tony (a guy who has no idea who orpheus is and thinks orpheus and eurydice is about orphans) to shorten his name because vallelunga is too difficult to pronounce and tony’s like ‘if the people you play for are so cultured they can learn to pronounce my name properly’ because like guys that’s a thing that happens with all non-anglophone names and seeing it come from someone who hasn’t had an education but doesn’t want to be *made better* because that doesn’t make them unworthy and then only accepts help when he wants it and doesn’t come from a position of ‘you need to look more presentable’ but from ‘I want to make your life better’ was really fucking nice excuse me, because it *did* make a point about how not being formally educated means that people are considered lesser when they shouldn’t have to fight for it, and I thought that the class-switch in there was a really great idea;
anyway nvm my specific opinions about specific scenes, the point is: green book is not heavy-handed and admittedly is a lot more sugary than BKKK and has the feel-good ending that makes it palatable for easy wins, but the content is fucking everything but sugary or devoid of discussing Serious Issues that I almost never see tackled in this kind of US movie and if people actually wanted to watch a movie that sees the subject counting that class relations exist, that some -isms are culturally learned and can be overcome, that money counts when we’re discussing how people are treated in the US, the *earned whiteness* concept (because tony is *white* but hasn’t *earned whiteness* and it’s plenty damned obvious) and that class relations are not automatically clear-cut *especially in the US* then green book is an absolutely valid choice. and like...... it wasn’t white saviorism in the sense that WHITE GUY GETS REDEEMED AND BECOMES UN-RACIST, it’s about two people growing and learning from each other and the fact that tony’s racism is tied to a) upbringing while being poor b) not literally knowing any better but that it doesn’t really take that much for him to see that his opinions are wrong when usually it’s poor black person vs rich white person, and actually that’s why I thought calling it reverse driving miss daisy was reaaaally not getting the point, so if people actually saw the damned movie before deciding it’s terrible that’d be nice;
I also think sp/ike lee was beyond rude in his, er, reactions to GB’s win, but then again... listen guys I love the man’s movies but since that time he went like ‘clint eastwood can’t make movies about charlie parker’ (??) and dismissed the italian partisans’s associations complains about what he did in miracle in st. anna (a movie I did actually really like but they were right about him villainizing the resistence when he could have not) with basically I DON’T CARE THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE ISSUES WITH HOW I, AN AMERICAN, DEPICTED A FAIRLY IMPORTANT PIECE OF ITALIAN HISTORY... like he needs to chill and to realize that there’s a thing called losing with grace and he’s not doing it.
tldr: bkkk imvo deserved to win way more and tbqh if I was spike I’d complain about bp having gotten more awards than his movie when bp really is the safest choice ever if we wanna talk about politics win, and I can agree that GB was a political choice, but it was not a bad political choice nor a racist one and actually it raised a lot of issues that I’d like to see explored more in movies because they usually aren’t. on top of that I thought mahershala ali’s performance in gb was fucking stellar and definitely was miles better than his part in moonlight (but like... bc he was in moonlight for TWENTY MINUTES, he was co-lead here) and I’m honestly baffled that when he won for moonlight there were gifsets everywhere and here there aren’t when this role was WAY better and more nuanced and with more to chew, never mind that again, he deserved it just for the speech under the rain I was discussing before. but like..... of course we’re all ignoring it??
also: I’m really laughing that tumblr as a whole is crying about GB winning when until two days ago bkkk was the worst thing ever because adam dr/iver starred in it and OMG OF COURSE HE WAS CHOSEN TO PLAY THE KKK MEMBER BECAUSE HE REALLY IS RACIST [lmao as if spike l/ee would work with a really racist person] and no one on this website gave a single fuck about it when it came out except for adam dr/iver fan blogs but now everyone is like OMG WHY DIDN’T BKKK WIN???!!!!! like guys you didn’t care about BKKK until a day ago and now I’m supposed to think you were rooting for it all along? when you all hated it because omg how dare they cast ky/lo ren in something where he’s not a bad guy? like we serious? come the fuck on, no one on here cared. and the fact that if blackpanther had won no one would say BKKK not winning = UTTERMOST CRIME just says all about how a film’s quality is judged around here. bye, I said my piece.

The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh, by David Damrosch
I love having internet friends with good taste in books who blog about their reading because it means I get incredible books like this on my to-read list. And it only took me five years from when I added this book to my list to when I got around to reading it!
This is a nonfiction book that tells the history of the Epic of Gilgamesh in reverse chronological order, starting with the guy who translated it and working back in time through the guy who found it, the king whose library it was found in, the plot of the story itself, and what little is known about the historical king Gilgamesh. (Then at the end it comes round to the present day influences of the Epic of Gilgamesh, with particular focus on a novel written by Saddam Hussein, because why not.)
The whole of this book was fascinating; Damrosch is an engaging writer who clearly is interested in his subject matter and is good at making his audience care too.
But the first two sections, comparing the two very different Victorian-era men involved in the time period of its rediscovery, were particularly fascinating.
George Smith was a man from a working class background who fought hard against the classism of the British Museum and British society in general to become one of the world's leading experts in cuneiform of his era. He had to deal with a lot of discrimination because of his background, and it's really impressive how he managed to get his foot in the door and make a name for himself regardless - but he also had a whole pile of white imperial privilege, and when he was on site in Iraq doing excavations, he clearly thoroughly enjoyed the colonial lifestyle. And he was definitely racist, as so many white British men of his era were.
Hormuzd Rassam was born in Iraq in the era of the declining Ottoman empire. As a person of colour in the field of archeology at the time he was rather a large aberration, and oh my god the racism he had to deal with as a result. So much racism. But he chose to align himself with the British nonetheless, going so far as to have a job as a British diplomat at one point, wanting a government career, but that fell apart due to - guess what - racism.
He lived in that uneasy space where he was continually trying to make a place for himself somehow within British society but could never ever be deemed acceptable no matter what he did. And he made efforts to push back against the general opinions towards "Orientals" in British culture but was wholly unlistened-to on the topic. But he wanted to be able to belong, to be respected, and lived nearly his whole adult life in the attempt. And then he was forever remembered after his death as all the negative things the white people who disliked him said about him. Poor Rassam.
Rassam was clearly talented, interesting, charismatic, intelligent, etc, and I was fascinated reading all about him - he was clearly a person worthy of respect and attention! White people are the worst sometimes.
(But possibly my favourite thing I learned in reading this book is that though the Assyrians used the name Gilgamesh, the original Sumerian equivalent was Bilgamesh. It just - it is just so inexplicably FUNNY to me!)
