My daughter's school did "The Sound of Music" this year for their play; my daughter was Mother Abbess. Honestly, you don't expect this sort of thing to go past being a proud parent who might have to hear someone else's kid (natch) miss a note here and there, but this particular performance turned into an actual news story on account of how best to handle a play that deals with Nazi Germany where young ones are concerned. Literally four local news outlets, the regional paper, the local free news site, and a handful of other news outlets picked it up. I don't know if anyone was completely happy with the outcome--I wrote about it at some length on the Substack.
Tonight, though, I just want to lean in on the experience and something that's a touchstone for a lot of us. There are just a load of canonical songs in the musical; "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is maybe the trickiest to sing. Peggy Wood is just amazing here. And I'm a proud parent for my daughter having done her best with it--and with the whole play.

Thank you for the tag, @baronessblixen-- went about this slightly different than the rules-- shuffle on a repeat playlist, post the first 10 tracks, and tag ten people-- because I don't use playlists.
I decided to select an OST, randomly generate a number, and list the corresponding song below:
"Posh!", Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
"Symphony No. 3, Op. 55 (Eroica): I. Allegro con brio", Beethoven
"Chin Up", Charlotte's Web
"Eric to the Rescue", The Little Mermaid
"How Can I Refuse", Barbie The Princess and the Pauper
"Stroll Through the Sky", Howl's Moving Castle
"There's Always Tomorrow for Dreams to Come True", Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
"Climb Ev'ry Mountain", The Sound of Music
"I Dreamed a Dream", Les Miserables
"La Esmeralda", Pugni
Tagging: @welsharcher, @agent-troi, @amplifyme, @suitablyaggrieved, @dd-is-my-guiltypleasure, @cecilysass, @aloysiavirgata, @perpetually-weirdening, @enigmaticdrblockhead, @settle-down-frohike, and I think that's over ten, so I'll stop~.
My sibling is desperately looking for a good omens fic where the angels realize that they take the place of the Nazis in the Sound of Music story, they don’t remember much of the details other that that but maybe you can still help lol
It could be...
Dixit Dominus by effanineffableplans (T)
"Are we the Nazis, Gabriel?"
The Sound of Music hits a little differently in light of the events surrounding the failed apocalypse. Gabriel, Uriel, Michael, and Sandalphon come to Earth to apologize to Aziraphale. Only, their idea of an apology is to sing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" to him.
hands and toes. Climbing up this granite. [mimes climbing]
Seeking energy, strength... and toe and finger holds
Up thirty... three thousand... almost four thousand feet high in the air
One misstep, and it's- and they- and- and and and he- and they fall
The freeclimbers fall
[inhales] The first scene in the film
is our GUEST STAR, Sybok rides in on a polluted planet
and he has to breathe through a breathing device because evrything was so polluted
and seeks to convert
a... a follower to his way of thinking
the next scene
essentially, the opening scene:
CAPTAIN KIRK IS CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN
WHY IS HE CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN?
I've thought often, since, I wrote:
[YOSEMITE. CAPTAIN KIRK, FREECLIMBING]
I've thought often: "Why did I come up with that idea?"
And I had no idea!
For the longest time, I , i i i i-
I had no,,,, uhh... understanding
Subconsciously.
PICKING freeclimbing- which I've never done- and I'm FEARFUL of HEIGHTS
uhhhh
th-ey- to me-
the the the- my worst nightmare- as many people's are- is falling
and i've always found it hard to look overthe edge of aNYTHING
two storey building, let alone...
THREE THOUSAND
FOUR THOUSAND FEET
and then, I began to understand, within the context of the film- let alone in real life- what that climb *meant*.
The climb is not just a climb up the rock, but it's a climb-
the ASPIRATIONS to climb, to reach higher than yourself
man, and this human being, uh, Kirk, representing all of man, climbing higher than himself- there's a line uh, in the scene, I- "I wish to make this ascent," he says, "I'm making an ascent!"
The meaning of that line? Obvious, now, taken out of context.
Free-climbers challenge the rock. Challenge themselves. They are at one with the rock. They become PART of the rock.
There is reason to believe that GRANITE is ALIVE.
The- CRYSTAL formations, and the crystal growing- there's reason to think that a crystal can recreate itself, that's one of the criteria of life!
And- climbers believe that granite IS alive, and they get energy from the granite.
SUN-WARMED by EONS of DAYS in the sun.
THIS. ROCK. can be. thought of as alive-
and so they climb this living body
seeking to be part of the living body
aspiring to climb to the top
and challenging
DEATH
and, thereby, gaining life.
And that's what. I thought. KIRK would be doing.
And we treat it in a funny, in a comical fashion. Uhh... There is great humour in the scene, and- and that was the reason, I discovered for myself, that Kirk is on the mountain.
And the only place he could be [unsettlingly long pause]
was Yosemite.
Because THIS. IS. THE MECHA. [Pause]
For climbers.
From ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Friends of mine who've been on that mountain
over there
have said they have been climbing
and have heard languages from all over the world
and not heard English!
Climbers from every country in the world come to Yosemite
to CLIMB El Cap and the
mountains around it
because it is one of the great climbing places in the in- in the world.
Well. In the erm. In the film. When asked by Spock, uhhh, "Why're you climbing the mountain?"
Kirk says, somewhat facetiously, "Uhhh, because it's there," uhhh, a remark attributed to the climber MALLORY. Uhh. Uhh, who probably did say it, or maybe it was. said by ev'ry caveman who went above the, the lip of the cave 'n, jumped off the top, a-ooh-
"WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?"
"UH, BECAUSE. IT'S THERE."
You know? uh.
Which. Is a. An answer. That. It. Uhhh. FENDS OFF. The true emotion. Of climbing. A mountain.
The mountain is climbed YES because it's there, because, otherwise, you'd be walking the plains, but the mountain is climbed...
Because I think the climber wants to hug the mountain.
He wants to envelop that mountain within his body.
He wants to make love to the mountain.
And, on its highest and finest level, whether, uhhh, these
tough young guys with their sinewy bodies and their, uhh, one meal a day routine will admit it
There is a
passionate affair
going on
between the climber and the mountain.
[transcript of William Shatner interview by lyrics bot]
I've been meaning to sit down and write out all of my thoughts on "High on a Rocky Ledge" because that song does something to me and every time I listen to it my brain is like !!!!! and I grin hopelessly.
I totally get why this song isn't a Big Deal in the fandom, because it's used before Ed comes on the scene at all. But I'm going to ramble on now about why it affects me so much, because I keep thinking up these points and not jotting them down.
So the context where it's used in the first episode, when Stede is reading to the crew. It sounds a lot like a lullaby, positioning him as their father (along with the fact that he's ... reading a child's story to the crew), for all those found-family feels.
He's also dressed in blue and in bluish moonlight which just makes for an excellent image.
Moondog sounds like some kind of traveling pre-modern singer who travels from village to village, and we all (we are peasants in this scenario) gather around him at the fire at night and listen to him sing his strange stories. This one has an otherworldly edge to it, there is a truth behind it that we can't quite reach.
The tune is quite lonely. Stede has always been lonely. He's definitely a lot less lonely with his crew, who are finally on his side at this point in the episode, but he's still alone. He doesn't really have a second-in-command the way (we will find out) that Ed does.
He doesn't even know that he has a SOULMATE out there, just waiting for him to come along! He thinks he's about as happy as he'll ever be - away from his marriage and boring life, on a ship with a crew that finally seems to accept him. He doesn't know what we know!!
The song itself! Man!
High on a rocky ledge lives a Mädel Edelweiß
Shy as a shadow, lovely as lace, and cold as ice
High on a rocky ledge, I pledge my love to her
Ev'ry time I climb up to Paradise
How many times I've been up to see her, goodness knows
Huffing and puffing, dressed in the warmest climbing clothes
How many chances would be taken in my
Hopeless pursuit of the Schnee Mädel Edelweiß
Then spoke a spirit, "If you would win your lady love
There's only one way: fall to your death from high above
You will begin to grow in snow beside the one
You have waited for to be mated with"
Now, I'm an Edel vice to my Mädel Edelweiß
Dying to be with her wasn't any sacrifice
We're so deliriously happy on our ledge
Where I pledge my love to my Lady Fair
You who are climbing breathless to see me and my love
Snow flowers growing fonder on Lover's Ledge above
If you've the yen to pluck, then pluck us both
For we who have lived as one wish to die as one
So like it's all about a love that's hopeless on the face of it - a man is in love with a flower. He wants to be with the flower but he's a human and she's a flower so it won't work. Some kind of magical being tells him that if he falls off the mountain, he'll be reincarnated as a flower as well, so he does it and it works. That's DARK and weird.
It parallels himself and Ed, who are born to such extremely different positions that they might as well be a human and a flower.
In some ways, Stede is the narrator of the song - he has to die in order to be with the one he loves. This happens multiple times: he's said to have died when he leaves his family to be a pirate (a transformation), he gets stabbed and hanged and nearly dies of the fever as well at the time of his meeting Ed (very liminal), he fakes his own death to be said to have died more truthfully and get closure so that he can be fully with Ed.
At the same time, Stede is the flower. Stede loves flowers (and he has been treated like shit his whole life for it); he's picking flowers in the flashback where he's tied to the oars of a rowboat. He is definitely a figure of beauty to Ed, and kind of a damsel in distress - this guy who doesn't know what the hell he's doing as a pirate, who needs to be rescued from himself. (And "lovely as lace", something definitely associated with Stede.)
And that ending: "If you've the yen to pluck, then pluck us both / For we who have lived as one wish to die as one." Hooooooo. A definite parallel to the ending of the season - Ed tying himself to Stede rather than allowing him to be killed.

34. is there a song you know every word to by heart?
Oh, there are many. The first one that occurs to me is O Mio Babbino Caro. I know most of Nessun Dorma! but can't reliably get one section. The Lord's Prayer. The Sound of Music. Edelweiss. Climb Ev'ry Mountain. My Favourite Things (but not always, weirdly enough). I Will Be With You (by Amira). Follow Your Heart (again, not always; also by Amira). Ombra Mai Fu (from Handel's Serse - very famous I think most people would recognise it even if they don't realise yet that they would). Wouldn't It Be Loverly (from My Fair Lady). The Music Of The Night (also not every time, sometimes I forget it). The Phantom of the Opera (Christine's part, anyhow). Ave Verum Corpus (the one by Mozart, I think... I rarely manage to nail the long mortis at the end tho). Probably some I've missed. Ah yes. River (originally Joni Mitchell). Pedestal (Jackie Evancho). Apocalypse (Jackie Evancho). I can get most of The Haunting (also Jackie Evancho). O Holy Night.
36. how many times hav you changed your url?
Only once, and then back again - it was a joke. I was briefly thispyromaniac for less than a week, then returned to this url bc I like it. Any serious changes are likely to retain the catkin bit, anyhow.
45. can you remember what happened yesterday?
Asking the hard questions, I see! I did paperwork for my new job. I cried. I got stressed. Can't remember much details. Then again, I never can unless something special happened.
