I hate when creators give up creative control over their works. As a writer, how the hell are people okay with this when it often just turns out to be for the worse? YOU’RE the only one who knows your own vision not anyone else. Especially when you’re writing something not too grounded in reality, your vision will be extremely hard to live up to from other people.

This is why follow-ups and remakes often suck and why shows go downhill after their creator leaves them.

Short stories, novels, or poems?

Novels all the way. I've tried my hand at short stories, and they always end up being novellas or straight up novels by the time I'm done with them. May as well stick with what my little brain clearly desires!

What genre do you prefer reading?

Mysteries (cozy or otherwise), horror (especially zombie fiction or apocalypse fiction, yes please), fantasy (especially cozy, I love cozy fantasy so much, have you read Legends and Lattes?), and romance.

Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?

I'm a little of both! I'll generally have a plan in my head at the very least, if not a brief outline written down somewhere, but when I actually sit down to write, my writing tends to veer off wherever it wants and do its own thing (for example, FUCKING CHUCK). As long as it makes sense, I tend to just let it go wherever it wants lol

What music do you listen to while writing?

Surprisingly, I don't listen to much music while writing. I'll daydream to it, absolutely, but I mostly just throw on some Markiplier or an old debate that I've heard ten thousand times and write to that. It's more about the background noise than the actual content, y'know?

But when I DO listen to music, I drift toward lofi or mood music compilations on youtube. The kind that DMs play during their DnD sessions. Love those so much, they really help keep me locked in a single mood, which I absolutely need when I'm writing a scene.

Favorite books/movies?

Oh god. Lord of the Rings (including the Hobbit don't @ me). Train to Busan (or any Korean zombie movies/shows, really). Some Disney and Pixar - Big Hero 6, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Emperor's New Groove, etc. The Strain is one of my favorite TV shows - I also love Cutthroat Kitchen above all else, a bunch of different anime, and Dance Moms (yes I know it's toxic and yes I am ashamed of myself for enjoying it. I pity the kids but I rage at the moms.)

As for books, my favorites are the Beechwood Harbor Mystery series, The Luminous Dead, Thief Liar Lady, All Systems Red, Legends and Lattes, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, anything Holly Black, Suffer the Children, Contagion, Luck in the Shadows, Assistant to the Villain, Dead of Night, and Surviving the Evacuation!

Any current WIPs?

Oh gosh. I'm bopping between From Carnival to Chamomile, a prequel to a cozy mystery series, and Dauntless, a zombie apocalypse trilogy, right now. Sometimes I'll work on Priestess Without Honor, a paranormal low-fantasy romance, and Chosen Against My Will, a dark mafia romance. I also have zer0 ALPHA, a lit-rpg isekai zombie apocalypse novel, but I haven't touched that in years and have only recently rediscovered my notes for it.

If someone were to make a cartoon out of you what would your standard outfit be?

I wear the same thing every day, surprisingly. That's the autism for ya. I love jeans and a T-shirt, especially if that T-shirt has a picture from an anime or show or something like that. Printed shirts, I think they're called. Oh, and mismatched socks. That's me.

Create a character description of yourself: 

Too tall for her own good and unwanted curves for days. Bobbed dark-blue hair with steel gray eyes. Too busy writing or gaming to really notice what's going on. Expect a text back within seconds of receiving it - she reads faster than most people expect and tends to read every text twice just to give it that safety buffer. If there isn't a snack and a drink nearby, call the police.

Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?

Hehehehe maybe. But not exactly in a good way. I'm very much the kind of person who will put someone I dislike into my book just so they can get the justice they won't get in the real world, even over something as minor as pronouncing my name wrong on purpose (I'm looking at you, Keiara).

Are you kill happy with your characters?

I want to say yes because I kill off characters constantly, but when it comes to my main OCs, no. I can't bring myself to kill them at all. I go out of my way to create characters for death (like FUCKING CHUCK) rather than put my favorites in the line of fire. I think that's a problem I need to work on.

Coffee or Tea while writing?

but I do love tea, especially in the fall. In the fall, I tend to drift toward tea and apple cider rather than coffee.

Slow or fast writer?

Fast writer when I actually sit down to write! Slow writer when I'm procrastinating. I've been working on Dauntless for...thirteen years? Twelve?

Where/who/what do you draw inspiration from?

I get inspiration from EVERYTHING. Dreams. Books. Movies. Something dumb my partner says offhandedly.

If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?

I absolutely want to be something cool, like a shadow mage. But I'm probably a little gremlin that hides in the edges of the woods and steals your socks. Mmmm socks.

Most fav book cliche:

Enemies to lovers! Especially when one person is smitten at firstt sight and doesn't realize it.

Least favorite cliche:

Friendship is magic. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with powerful friendships being front and center, but when the big bad is literally destroyed because fRiEnDsHiP I gag a little bit. I also hate undeserved happy endings - make the ending make sense. If it's a sad or horror book, sometimes the ending needs to be bad. And finally, forced romance. No. No thank you. Some stories don't need romance.

Favorite scene to write?

Descriptions! Am I good at them? No. Will I spend three pages describing a tree? Maybe.

Also conversations. I tend to do a lot of conversations and monologues in my writing. Need to work on that.

Reason for writing?

If I don't write down the ideas in my head, I will explode.

Comfort Books Okay so like here's not one but two embarrassing truths. The first is that I really don't read a whole lot any more. Since living in Canberra means that public transport is essentially off the table I lost my #1 reading opportunity I took advantage of beforehand, and getting into a relationship I put as much of my time as possible into in which parallel-play is really not on the table either, that also rules out "while I'm just hanging out at home". So I just don't read books very much. That's truth one. Truth two is that when I do just kill time by reading something I've read before, nowadays it's almost always something that I've written.

That said, comfort books as a kid were Konrad, Lord of the Night, Legend of Zagor, and Artemis Fowl (just the first one).

I love Marry My Husband and all but the one thing I don't like about it is that the mc and the male lead get's told that they look handsome/pretty without their glasses, and pisses me off.

Like they were ugly with their glasses and that's a really hurtful cliche or stereotype, as a person with glasses, this stereotype made me insecure all my life. Like, that I'm ugly with my glasses and people who wear glasses are ugly, their not pretty.

Heck, the mc and the male lead didn't even look that bad, they just need better looking glasses in my opinion.

But in all honesty, it's not like only Marry My Husband is the only one who does this stereotype, a lot of webtoons, anime, manga, tv shows, movies and etc. does this a lot. And I am tired of this shit, the only movie that I saw that doesn't do this is with the Cloudy Chance of Meatball.

One of the main character (i forgot her name, so let's call her blondie) blondie is a person who wears glasses ever since she was a child but now wears contact lenses but when the flin? Or flyn? idk, told her that she looks pretty when she has her glasses on, and that made me really happy.

And I know there are a lot of shows, webtoon, anime and etc, don't do this and have a character who wears glasses, but most of the time, some of these out right tell us that these people are already handsome/beautiful, and there are characters who wear glasses that aren't told by the others that they are handsome/beautiful.

But I just want one show to atleast have a romance where the MC wears glasses, and instead of taking them off and suddenly their all pretty, the MC should just get better glasses the next time they are in need of a change of lenses. Or not, and just let them wear glasses. That would literally be the most beautiful thing ever.

But no, instead we still have people doing this shit.

so me and my dad have a bit of a hard time bonding sometimes, but there’s one silly little thing we had a LOT of fun discussing, and that’s this… i’m not sure what to call it. it’s not exactly a theory, what with how absurd and obviously incorrect it is, but it’s fun.

and it basically hinges off the fact that kristen schaal tends to play very similar characters. (no hate towards her, love her, love her stuff). and how some of them kinda perfectly line up? the characters, i mean.

sometimes after the events of gravity falls, mabel gets into either interdimensional or time travel, i do not remember which. i

this would be sometimes around her teen years. and she does this for a while,

but oh no, something went wrong! she’s forgotten her name and her past, retaining nothing but her interests, passions, and overall silliness.

uhhhhh yeah this show is what happens next. she gets a new name, a new family, and grows up and the story of last man on earth happens.

at some ambiguous time after the events of the show, she like. gets turned into a vampire. i guess. oh and does her unclear method of sci-fi travel, sending her into the past

if you’ve seen the wwdits tv series, and are caught up, you’ll know what i’m talking about

my girl got in trouble and got assigned position as the guide, and she slowly forgets who she was previously. for a second time.

and yeah that’s the general idea. again, just a silly concept dreamed up by me and my dad. i also haven’t seen kristen schaal in a TON of things, and of course i couldn’t fit all the roles i’ve seen her in into the timeline, i have my limits. so for example, her character who i genuinely do not recall the name of from our flag means death? i’d love to but she just doesn’t fit. and uhhh i think she was the orangutan in cloudy with a chance of meatballs two? yeah that. that speaks for itself. unfortunately.

Random Storytime

So in high school and college I did a ton of babysitting. I took a lot of lessons from The Baby-sitter's Club books.

I was babysitting for a new family but had talked to the mom. It was summer and a concern was the kids watching too much tv. So I was prepared with my normal kit (had some puppets, a Barbie and several kids books) plus a giant cardboard box.

There were three kids, two boys and a girl, between 3-8 years old.

Comes time for the parents to leave and they are shocked there aren't tears. But the kids were digging through my kit and just waved bye.

So they wanted to watch two episodes of a show that came on in about ten minutes (pretty sure it was Nicktoons summer block or something). I said that was fine. And it was because it was under the two hour total tv limit. Now remember this was the days before onDemand/streaming. After it was over they wanted to watch a Disney VHS.

That's when I said it was time for a new game or toy. I gave a few options but they wanted more tv. But I was warned.

So I pulled out the big box, scissors and markers. I told them about The Muppet Babies episode of the broken tv, including a terrible impression of the muppets. They seemed doubtful but helped in the creation of our new "tv".

Then I used one of the puppets to do a "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" type weather report. That got giggles. And bam it was then an argument of who's got to do their tv show first.

I don't remember any of them but they got very creative. The parents returned very surprised they weren't just watching a Disney movie.

The tv box was left so they could show their folks later too.

Tag 9 People you Want to Know Better

Oh, I haven’t done one of these in ages~ I used to do them back in the day on deviantART, so it’s nice to have a blast from the past! @no-braincells-inc tagged me~

Three Ships: Ah, there’s a considerable bit of brain rot going on in the ole noodle near constant, surprisingly mostly for three ships:

Ulquiorra/Grimmjow. I have shipped them for years, but only started writing my own fanfic for them recently. Their pairing tag on AO3 WILL have a resurgence! I swear it! Even if I have to write the fics myself! We will get to 250 then beyond!

Leon S. Kennedy/Chris Redfield. Probably my original brain rot, technically. They were my first ever multi chapter fanfic, and I love their dynamic. Shipped them for ages. So long I... can’t remember when I started? Maybe when I first realized men could love other men?

Dabi/Hawks. The most recent of the brain rot! I got into it very, very recently because my dumb ass didn’t go “oh, that’s a possibility” until someone who had a bunch of bookmarks of them read my Bleach fic.

First Ever Ship: God, I’m old and that was such a long time ago. I’m genuinely struggling to remember. It may have actually been Chris/Leon from Resident Evil. That’s the fandom I’ve been in the longest that I keep up with.

Last Movie: That I finished? Here Comes the Boom with Kevin James. That I have on right now while typing this? Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Currently Reading: No series at the moment, unless we count editing my own work? Last book I finished was Jurassic Park though.

Currently Watching: Again, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. TV show? I just finished Paradise P.D., but if you want something that’s not pothead humor, The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting (it’s fuckin’ adorable). Had that on last night.

Currently Consuming: Uh, I just ate a 100 grand bar and have a bottle of water. Tip: chew those things thoroughly. The caramel WILL try to kill you for the indiscretions of eating it.

Currently Craving: This Japanese place near Spade’s house. Or the Mexican place.
