android au - detective droids
Summary: In a modern-futuristic world, it is possible to create androids that are so advanced, they’re more or less human. There will be 5 android au posts total, each focusing on a different group!
The Sumeru collection was created specially for detective and investigation workplaces.
Characters: Tighnari, Alhaitham, Kaveh, Cyno
Tumblr media
Tighnari specializes in evidence collection on sites and processes them in the lab. You have no idea why they made him so pretty (don’t the designers know that it might distract you from work?), but paired with his underlying snark and the little smiles he only sends to you, you’re quite sure you have a favorite droid to visit during your breaks.
As a field agent, you’re no stranger to minor injuries and a few scrapes here and there, but Tighnari always chides you about being more careful. He often ends up treating you and patching up the androids when nurses weren’t around, tail swishing absentmindedly as he focuses on applying salves to your skin.
Tighnari is rather careful when it comes to you - or perhaps more gentle might be the better word, considering how he just pushes the others around, giving them a ‘told you so’ while rolling his eyes. You don’t realize this, but his gaze always drifts to you at these times, ears picking up on the little giggle that escapes your lips.
His ears and tail increase his sensitivity to his surroundings, meaning Tighnari notices details about a crime scene that regular people wouldn’t. The same goes for changes in his co-workers, be it burnt-out employees or ones that seem to have their loyalties switched… he never admits it, but Tighnari sends this information to Cyno or Alhaitham if he suspects it might bring harm to the agency, in terms of catching double-agents.
Once, the final straw was when he saw said double-agent trying to approach you. You were on a rather sensitive case and had tight lips, which led to them trying to attach a bugging device on your attire. Thankfully, Tighnari was quick to remove it, telling you that there was dust on your coat.
…Level headed as he is, Tighnari is quite protective of those he considers his close friends. He’s quite popular around the workplace anyways, so he does use this to keep tabs on people. No one said his work ended with just forensics, right?
Tumblr media
A data collection droid, Alhaitham is often known as a ‘witness’ of sorts that records everything he deems useful to a case. Due to his personality however, sometimes he just stands there and judges people, silently making comprehensive notes about their speech, body language, and any suspicions he may have.
These transcripts then go to you. Alhaitham highlights what is most relevant and enjoys seeing what you think before sharing his own theories. Some people say that the both of you sound like masterminds cooking up a concerning plan in the office, catching snippets of your conversation that sound like:
‘you did say he bought copious amounts of gasoline…’ ‘so it’s legal to blow up the factory?’ ‘i’ll check through my database, but i’m sure we can find a loophole’
People that aren’t close to Alhaitham might think he’s stoic and a stickler for the rules, but you’re more than aware of the chaotic-neutral methods he has a penchant for. In a sense, data collection really suited Alhaitham, who enjoyed seeing people squirm at the idea that he could psychoanalyze their deepest darkest thoughts.
As much of a dramatic he is, Alhaitham doesn’t tolerate uncooperative people or those that lash out against your team. Once, you were interviewing people for a case when an aggressive bystander attempted to attack you, only for Alhaitham to surprise everyone by knocking him out with one blow.
He says he controlled his strength, so there wouldn’t be any lasting injuries… but suffice to say the rest of your interviewees were very obedient after that.
Alhaitham also enjoys annoying (pissing off) certain people as a way to get ‘extra data’. You let it slide only because you’re aware he always has a reason for his actions.
At one point you asked Alhaitham why he manages to get along well with you, despite usually keeping to himself at the office. He merely shrugs, saying that it’s only natural to have good relations with someone he’s often partnered with.
That, and… if he was with you, he wouldn’t be accused of slacking off.
Tumblr media
Kaveh often works as an informant or undercover agent. His job relies more on his ability to pass off as a human, and his empathetic nature helps with that whenever he’s on the field. You’re his partner on these missions, either watching from the hidden cameras in his system or working by his side.
Kaveh does get a little annoyed however if people attempt to flirt with you during these, even if you were letting them because it was a way to gain information. He reasons that because he’s an android, he should do those tasks instead - Kaveh doesn’t want to burden you with that kind of work if possible. You’re the same; you may not be a saint, but it’s easy to want to treat Kaveh well.
Kaveh also has a legendary reputation as an escape artist. He claims it was just a stroke of luck, but he undoubtedly is good at navigating through even the most fortified buildings and picking the best spots to place explosives to knock it down.
He often gets embarrassed when people praise his skill, but only you’re aware of the work that Kaveh puts in, memorizing blueprints and guessing where hidden floors may be. Seeing him get the recognition he deserves always fills you with pride.
Once, you were on a mission alone and trapped within the workings of an underground fortress. To say that Kaveh appearing out of nowhere felt like an angel came to save you wouldn’t be too far off. With worry plastered on his face as he checked if you were alright, he quickly led you through the building with the distractions he had in place. Kaveh explains that once he heard backup was needed at your location, he’d quickly volunteered himself for the task.
‘Ah… not that I’m expecting your thanks for anything like that! …Um, I’m about to deactivate the lights, so could you hold onto my hand? I’ll lead us to the exit.’
Tumblr media
Cyno is an android designed for combat. Oftentimes he’s dispatched as a hitman or to guard important places and people. This time around, he’s been assigned to protect you.
Seeing as you’re being targeted by an unknown mastermind, the agency appointed Cyno to stay with you 24/7. He tries his best to simply be a ‘shadow’ at first so that you wouldn’t have to adjust your lifestyle for him, but after a while you told Cyno that you didn’t mind.
‘After all, I can just treat it as having a bodyguard or friend!’
Cyno can come off as intimidating to people, so he’s surprised by how friendly you are to him; asking him if he’d like to join in the activities you were doing, or what he likes to do in his free time.
Nowadays it’s hard to imagine going around without seeing him nearby, and once he even pretended to be your boyfriend when your acquaintances asked why you were always together.
‘Are you sure you’re alright with that? Your friends will think I really am dating you.’ ‘Well… I can’t really complain about having such a reliable “boyfriend”, can I?’
It becomes easier once you settle on this as a cover story, though Cyno doesn’t really do anything extra with the role besides holding the door more often and giving you fleeting smiles, unsure if he really looked the part with how serious his expression is otherwise. People think it’s cute. You find it more endearing when you pass by a collectives shop, and notice he’s glancing at the TCG cards on display.
One day, perhaps you’d order a custom card based on Cyno? From your chats with his friends, you think he might find it amusing at the very least.
Because of how he is with you, you forget that Cyno is normally feared amongst the enemies of their agency. He rarely misses his mark, nor does his targets escape his judgment without a price.

the business of small business is good business
I remember when I left college, I had an interview at an extremely tiny, extremely prestigious design firm. They weren't hiring (they made that clear) but I was able to convince them to do a portfolio review.
"You could go into accounts, you're great at it. But you'll be miserable. You could go into advertising but you'll be even more miserable. You'll make more money in either of these."
"What should I do?"
"Great question, you're going to have to figure that out, your skills and personality don't fit each other."
(Accounts are largely the sales folks in advertising agencies -- they handle clients, they are part of a pitch team, etc. If you've watched Mad Men -- Ken Cosgrove, Pete Campbell, Roger Stirling were accounts).
This was... many years ago.
I ordered dinner tonight, from my favorite restaurant, and had it delivered.
In the intervening years from that conversation, I doubled-down on my tiny businesses. It's been a good life.
I'm in the elevator with my favorite restaurant food in a bag and someone who lives in my building, whom I don't know, gets on.
"{Name of the restaurant]," I offer as way of greeting. "Fantastic food, I always get [name of dish]. Ever been there?"
"No but it smells great."
(Hands the person the menu from the bag)
On one hand -- I know I need to slow down, focus, tighten the ship.
Four years of transitioning Evil Supply Co. (which operated like a mad scientist lab / mad engineer's lab) into Netherworld Post Office (an extremely focused greeting card, printable downloads, and zine company) have taught me a lot of lessons.
On some level though
I can't/won't stop.
With the very depths of my soul, I love small business. I love the diner down the street, I love my suppliers for the Post -- I purposefully scoped them out and chosen the ones independently owned.
I. Love. Small. Business.
It's so hard, it is so rewarding, it takes so much, it gives so much more.
Every time you shop at a small, independently owned whatever, you're helping your community (we pay taxes locally).
You're helping the community -- be it your neighborhood or a niche interest online -- stay, grow, thrive.
There is a time and a place for Giant Corporation Things and I'll never argue that. I'm not here to nay-say.
I am here to remind you, regularly, constantly -- and maybe too often -- the width of the line between everything looking the same, sounding the same, reading the same, tasting the same -- because it is mass produced to the palette of a wide audience --
the width of that line is relative pocket change in price difference and/or a few extra days shipping time between a big box shop and your weird fav whatever.
If you want the world to be weird and shaped to your specific interests?
Shop small when you can.

Me and @hyperfixationwizard come bearing Spy AU!Roach headcanons.
He is their tech guy.
He's got a lab where he just fucks around with electronics and shit making all of their cool James Bond-y gear.
Throat mic, is what I'm getting at here, basically.
His nickname probably came from when he was doing a lot more field work because he was an expert in stealth missions and had some sort of weird headset with antennae he made himself.
Also he just really likes bugs. Even now that he's mostly just tinkering in his lab he has a headband with antennae because he's cool and quirky like that because it's my favourite design for him <333
He keeps various little terrariums in his lab and names them after the 141 and co. (I don't know much about bugs so suggestions are Very welcome)
Ghost is some sort of spider called Boo.
Soap is a stink bug called Bubbles (Roach thinks he's So funny for it)
Price and Gaz are both beetles (Taxes and Petrol?)
He and Ghost were childhood friends (met in elementary school or whatever) but Roach moved so they parted ways and met again in a mission after like a decade.
They dated really briefly but figured they worked better as friends and decided to break off in good terms. (Were in some sort of fwb/qpr type thing for a while?)
Also he's probably like aroace (or at least aspec).
Ghost frequently hangs out in his lab when he has nothing else to do but is around base. Sometimes he'll even take miscellaneous paperwork to do there. Yes he has his own office, that's irrelevant.
He mainly sits on the couch and rambles about how gay he is for Soap. Roach would keep around a spray bottle to physically spray him with water if he could but raising the humidity in his lab would fuck with his tinkers.
Instead he has a designated Hitting Ghost Newspaper that he uses to whack him with.

Chestnut Stud Across the Multiverse: Symmetra’s Warrior Monk experience
Tumblr media
Satya Vaswani, or Symmetra as she was known to some due to her own unique particular fixation and focus in balance and order, sat away typing at the desk of her workshop at the Capsule Corp offices. Idly glancing from her monitor screen to a nearby set of doors as she saw a pair of labgirls exit them. Their coats closed but doing little to hide the glistening sheen of their skin, faces flushed with red blushes and silly, satisfied grins as she watched them pass her by. Quirking a brow as she yet again had to wonder what the deuce went on inside that part of the building. Now she wasn’t a clueless virgin mind you, she just happened to be what one would call very work focused and goal oriented, so that meant she didn’t find or make much time for matters regarding sex and relationships. All she knew was that part of the office was the section dedicated to the company’s Capsule Cocks division, which was based on developing and marketing sex toys but that was the bare minimum of her knowledge to the matter. She’d tell herself it was fine being all she needed to know but damn her curiosity. Damn her treacherous brain putting ideas and fantasies into her head!! Oh sure she could just go up to her co-workers and maybe ask what went on inside and what they got up to but she felt that’d make her seem like a pervert! She was a Capsule Corp engineer and programmer of high skill and regard, not a slut!! If anyone was going to out her inquiry to rest, it might as well be herself as she mustered up some courage and confidence. Seeing no eavesdroppers or onlookers, she got up from her desk and made for the door, hacking the code lock was a cake walk for her as she entered inside. Time to see what it was that’s made those lab girls so weak in the knees and walking on sunshine oh so bad.
Symmetra:*hummed to herself,as she found this lab wing in one of its rare quiet periods. Usually there was heavy thumps and thuds like construction works mixed with some one playing very loud music on a high volume* huh, nothing unusual here…*the exotic engineer looked around with an inquisitive nature before coming upon a room labelle storage. Entering it to find half a dozen tables with sheets laid across whatever was lying upon them. Seeming person shaped which only made her even more curious.* what have we here now…..
Out loud saying that more to herself as she made her way to the nearest table, she took hold of the sheet and pulled it off. Eyes widening, her dark skinned fsce blushing as she beheld the sight of a five naked bald man. One she recognised as some close personal friend of ms.Briefs,Krillin if she recalled his name correctly. A greyish skinned twin of his literally bare before her, exposing sculpted,Herculean muscles and a cock of enormous girth and length than what you’d expect of a man of his size and frame. Her complex mind going mental gymnastics as she began to put the math together. Why so many women worked in this wing of the lab,so many of those volunteers and sex objects who seemed like hookers and porn stars. What she was looking at was a literal, full bodied, fully functional sex toy,a porno mannequin that for some reason looked like a friend of the boss lady herself. By all accounts this went against so many laws, rules and regulations of science and yet Symmetra couldn’t turn away. She’d never been one for thinking of anything in relation to sex, nevermind romance yet looking at this….compact figure of such design and build. So very well endowed, so easy on the eyes…
Symmetra:*sensually bites her lip as she rubbed her thighs together. There was no doubt about it,she was finding herself getting sexually aroused,as if the oresence of this…ideal man,had awakened Something in her.*I mustn’t,I shouldn’t be doing this….*yet her hands reached out to caress his torso. Tracing those powerful muscles, flinching as the sex doll Krillin clone’s eyes snapped open. The fresh of the production line, test pending warrior monk’s stoic gaze locked on her her.* Oooh my apologies, did I disturb your slumber? Let me make it up to you….*soon as she said that, she pressed her lips to his, kissing him. A gesture he didn’t hesitate in returning in the slightest.*
Symmetra moaned into the passionate kiss, which became sloppy as she and the warrior monk she started getting acquainted with let their lust guide and drive them. Her hands moving down along his Herculean compact body to grasp and caress his cock. Stroking it as she beheld with erotic awe at seeing it rise to erectness. Gasping as she found her shortstack companion grab and rip her clothes off of her, soon naked as she was yet not bothered in the slightest. If anything such boldness only spurred on her found sense of passion,as she moved to lay atop the warrior, making out with him as she straddled his waist. Gasping as she felt his cock smack and sandwich itself between her slit and the buns of glorious chocolate skinned booths. Her arousal skyrocketing as she grounded against that fuckmeat, her pussy soaking it with her nectar as her tits pressed snd rubbed against his firm pecs. Eyes flowing with lust as she glanced on either to see the other warrior monks sit up,awakening from their slumber. Their sheets falling off as their cocks sprung with erect stiffness at the sight of her in the act of such lewdness. It made the exotic beauty feel elicited to be the centre of attention, who cares if they’d re basically all the same guy! Breaking her liplock,a trail of saliva as she licked her lips at the other warrior monks, shaking and clapping her asscheeks to make thunderous mating cries.
Symmetra:come you hoard of alpha males. Fulfill uiur function and sate mt lust with your perfect bodies. Show me the pleasures of casual sexuality…..
As soon as she had spoke those words, she found herself on her knees, her hands and mouth moving between stroking and sucking off six warrior monks. Licking and blowing on their godly lengths and girths, even kissing and massaging their balls. Her dark skinned bombshell frame glistening with sensual perspiration as the six Krillin clones began to return the favour. Making her lay on a table as hone warrior monk ate her out, another facefucking her as her head hung off the very edge. A third straddling her torso as he cupped her tits, sandwiching his shaft between them as he used them to get himself off with a paizuri. At one oint she found one of them performing a rimjob, stunned to find herself somaroused at getting her ass eaten out. But then came that glorious moment when the mating began. Straddling a warrior monk so girl style as she shamelessly bounded and rode upon his cock, ass and firs bouncing and jiggling like jelly as the other 5 stood around, stroking away and staining her exotic skin with a rain of precum. Such a basic one on one postion so effective at bring her to climax but it omly got better from there.
From taking it doggystyle as one facefucked her while the other fucked her ass, showing her thst compared to getting ribbed, anal with such a lengthy, girthy cock filling her was an even greater experience. Particularly when she was sandwiched between a pair of warrior monks, their muscular forms between her as they fucked her balls deep in her ass and pussy. Two on one, three to all 6, the variety snd tandem combinations was a thrill ride for the capsule corp egghead as she began to understand first hand how and why so many many women came and went out of here looking so fulfilled and glowing. Symmetra of course unaware that Bulma was catching it all on camera, the ceo playing with herself as she used a warrior monk dildo to join her in experiencing orgasmic climax, her lewd mind already thinking now to approach and offer the engineer a new postion in the warrior monk development and test run program, once a gal had herself a taste like this, there was no doubt this one time was never going to be enough for her.

"It's a helicarrier." Fury explained, seeing your wide eyes staring up at the great big aircraft. "A mobile command center and forward operations platform."
"It's not gonna carry me to hell, is it?"
"Not if you keep the peace."
"Right." You nodded, unsure. "It's good, I'll give you that. Sustained and independently-powered flight judging from the turbine engines. Looks familiar now I think of it."
Fury looked at you as you approached a drop-down ramp, impressed. "I'd hope so. Part of the designs were made by your grandfather decades ago."
"What?" You turned. "That guy is full of surprises."
"We've noticed most Starks tend to be. This helicarrier is hopefully the first of many. Perhaps you could put your skills to use and provide upgrades for it."
"I'd have to check the schematics and do some white box testing for the engines and see what the electrics are compatible with. And I'll need to be on the whitelist. If you have one of those."
"Of course we do."
"Good. Is there anything else I need to know about... It?"
"We have a WEP-secured network, multicast broadcasting, and traceroute and trackback."
"That's a lot of website-based add-ons. What about defenses?"
"Retro-reflective panels and radar cloaking."
You nodded in response and entered the aircraft. You stared in awe, coming into what seemed to be a loading bay. It was filled with many goods ranging from tiny widgets and tools to enormous piping or guns. This area alone seemed bigger than the entire warehouse. You could only imagine what else could fit inside.
"Ms. Stark."
You turned to see who must have been another agent approaching. Like all the others, he was dressed like a packet of silk cut. However, he seemed more friendly than the others, wearing a smile instead of a stony look like everyone else.
"Agent Coulson." Fury introduced, motioning between the two of you.
"It's a pleasure." He said, holding out a hand.
You shook it. "Hello, agent."
As he exchanged some words with Fury afterwards, you couldn't help observing him. He looked familiar, like someone you might pass on the street, but you couldn't figure it out.
"I'm sorry, have we met before?" You decided to speak up.
Coulson turned with a knowing look on his face. "Not officially."
"Not officially?"
"The Stark Expo last week. I saw you take down a Hammer drone with consummate elegance."
You smiled a little. "Tell that to the bruised ribs I ended up with."
"Coulson here recommended you to us." Fury explained. "He said you have potential."
"Well, I'm flattered." You showed off the smile on your face. "So this Triskelion. What's it like?
-
It was pretty amazing.
The Triskelion was built along the Potomac River on Theodore Roosevelt Island as an enormous complex that occupied almost all of the island. Its central structure was composed of three very tall columnar buildings supporting a shared circular top.
As you were guided through it, your face disguised as not to be recognized, you were given a brief overview of what the large building housed.
There was the main atrium as well as many operating rooms. It contained Fury's office, the chambers of the World Security Council, work spaces and labs, interrogation cells, and a landing ground outside. It was aweing and you wondered just how advanced SHIELD was based on all this alone.
You couldn't believe your grandfather helped make this possible. He was a founder of this.
"This will be your lab." Coulson explained as he and Fury took you to the end of another long hallway.
Pushing the door open, your face showed a mix of reactions, mostly intrigue and curiosity. It was a wide and open space, very ideal, filled with advanced tech lining the walls and several tables to place work or research. It was every inventor's dream.
"This is..." You could barely speak due to smiling. "Amazing."
"And it's all yours." Fury said. "This will be your place of work out of assignments or commissions. You won't be disturbed unless it's end of the world urgent."
You raised a brow. "And will there be any 'end of the world' urgencies?"
He didn't answer which was very unsettling, but you weren't surprised.
-
A few hours later, you were called up to Fury's office and were waiting patiently for him to arrive. There was a news report playing in the corner about an attack on Culver University involving the ever annoying military and some kind of creature.
"Rumors continue to swirl about a violent clash between forces of the US military and an unknown adversary on the campus of Culver University earlier today. Sophomores Jack McGhee and Jim Wilson witnessed some of the battle."
The camera changed from the destruction to two boys. "It was so big! It was, like, this, like, hulk!"
It cut back to the reporter and displayed some footage. "McGhee, who happens to be a reporter for the campus paper, captured this on his cell phone. Further search for the mysterious Hulk was postponed by powerful thunderstorms in the Smoky Mountain National Forest."
You tilted your head when you saw this 'Hulk'. It was big and green and seemed to have a constant expression of anger on its face. However, there was something about the eyes that still seemed somewhat human. Perhaps it wasn't a monster after all.
"Interesting, isn't it?" Fury's voice spoke up from behind.
You turned to face him. "That's one word for it, yes. Who is it?"
There was a pause in which he clearly debated on telling you what he knew, but ultimately decided against it and walked behind his desk.
"I have several matters to discuss with you. All of equal importance."
"Oh?" You nodded, motioning for him to go on.
"Think of these as your first assignments."
"Wait, already? I've been here three hours."
"Trust me on this." He waited for you to nod before continuing. "At the Expo, you saved a boy. Do you remember that?" Your brows furrowed. "The kid in the Iron Man mask? What about him?"
"His name is Peter Parker. He lives with his aunt May and uncle Ben in a small apartment in Queens. His parents were good friends of mine before they died in a plane crash some time ago. He's a smart kid, very talented and promising, and he admires your father. I want you to keep a permanent home in New York so you can watch over him. Ben knows about this and he's more than happy to accommodate you."
You listened and thought about it in great detail. "So you want me to move to Queens and look after this Parker kid?"
"I do. He's had trouble in the past with an older boy who wasn't exactly the kindest of souls and hurt him. He needs someone to guide him and help him cope. You suit this role whether you believe it or not."
A sad frown was on your face when you realized what he meant by 'trouble' and 'hurt'. No kid should have to deal with that.
"Okay. I'll do it." You nodded again. "What else did you need me for?"
"Ah, yes. There's been calls and reports about an unidentified object landing in New Mexico about fifty miles into the desert. I would like you to analyze this and see if you can't remove it. You won't be alone, Agent Coulson will accompany you."
-
The next night you were on the road with Coulson heading to New Mexico where some atmospheric disturbances had been happening.
You had stayed up all night and most of the day creating something to help remove the unidentified object Fury had been telling you about. Apparently it was a hammer of some kind but he didn't elaborate much.
As you looked out the window, you couldn't help but smile. At night, even the deserted lands seemed beautiful. The sky was a velvety navy shade and the stars twinkled like tiny diamonds up above. You could see sandy plains and dusty mountains silhouetted underneath these little diamonds and it seemed almost magical. For a moment, you forgot you were a teenage runaway sent on a mission by a super secret government agency. In fact, just the idea of that seemed preposterous.
Until your stomach gave a mighty rumble and you were thrown back into reality, cheeks flaming in embarrassment as you glanced at Coulson who only seemed amused by it.
"Hungry?" He joked.
You laughed a little and nodded. "That obvious, agent?"
"Well the good news is there's a gas station just a mile down the road. We can make a stop there if you can hold on that long."
"I think I can manage."
The two of you shared a smile before you looked out the window again, feeling the nagging in your stomach as it craved sustenance.
Before long, you came to a stop at the gas station. You unbuckled your belt and stepped outside the car, stretching as the night air wrapped around you.
As the car filled up, you and Coulson walked into the tiny food mart. The woman behind the counter didn't seem too interested but acknowledged your presence with a courteous smile before going back to staring at the floor. Your stomach growled and you quickly shushed it before heading over to grab something.
You picked up a pack of sour patch kids and a bottle of water before joining Coulson again. He was crouched by one of the shelves, looking torn between powdered donuts or frosted donuts.
"Hands up! Don't move!" Someone suddenly shouted.
Your heart stopped and glanced up at the mirror in the corner to see two men with guns pointed at the woman behind the counter. As they threatened her, you decided to try and distract them. However, Coulson simply grabbed your arm and shook his head, saying he had it under control. You stayed hidden and watched as he stood up.
"Who else is here?" One of the men asked the woman. "Who owns the car outside?"
"I do." Coulson spoke up. "But it's really more like a lease."
The second man turned abruptly and pointed his shotgun at him. "Toss the keys over here. Come on."
He did as asked and the robber caught them, stuffing them in his pockets. Then they turned back to the woman who had her hands raised and was crying.
"Empty the cash register." The first one ordered, taking out a bag. "Start filling this bag with cigarettes."
"Excuse me." Coulson said, getting their attention again. "I also have this gun. You'll probably be needing that."
"Put it down!" They both yelled. "Put it down right now!"
"Okay, don't want any trouble." He said, raising his hands in surrender.
"Toss the piece over here then."
"I prefer not to throw it and risk the gun accidentally going off. Maybe I could slide it over?"
They shared a look, confused. "Yes. Slide it over to my feet. Don't try anything funny."
"Okay. I'm just gonna move over to this aisle. I'm gonna slide it over to you."
He slowly moved past you, still hidden, and into the next aisle as he said. You were just as confused as the robbers, wondering what he was planning to do.
He did as he said would and slid the gun over. However, as one of the men knelt down to pick it up, Coulson suddenly grabbed a bag of flour and tossed it at the second man, causing it to explode in his face and stun him. He then ran forward and used one of the shelves for a boost, jumping up and kicking the shotgun out of the first man's hands. He grabbed that next and pivoted, hitting both of them in the face and knocking them out cold with ease.
You stared, your jaw dropping in pure amazement, and slowly stood up. The woman behind the counter was just as stunned and you walked over, awkwardly placing your items on the counter.
"That was so cool." You said. "Can you be my new bestie?"
Coulson gave you a smile before turning to the other woman and putting down both the powdered and frosted donut packets. "Sorry for the mess. I couldn't decide."
He handed the money over but she only stared, afraid to speak and struggling to process what she'd just witnessed.
"Keep the change." He told her, picking up the items.
"Wait." She finally managed to say. "What should I tell the police?"
"Tell them those Tae-Bo tapes really paid off."
-
The next day, you arrived at the site. It was incredible how many people were already there.
A parking lot had been made, most of the cars pickup trucks or RVs, and dozens of men, women, and children alike were gathered around a huge crater in the earth. They had picnic blankets, coolers, tents, and even a barbecue set up. All for this hammer that supposedly couldn't be moved. From the looks of things, they'd even tried chaining it to one of the pickups but it was too heavy even for that and tore off the end of the truck.
"Is this it?" You asked, squinting past the sun to get a good look.
"This is it." Coulson confirmed, taking out his phone and dialing a number. He waited a few seconds for the person to answer. "Sir. We've found it."
Like magic, SHIELD trucks arrived over the course of a couple hours and quickly dispersed the gathered crowds. They set up a small compound around the hammer, many of the agents trying to lift it as they worked. You hadn't yet and were very desperate to do so but waited until it was all set up and you could do your thing.
You called in some help to lift the different parts of your invention over to the hammer but made sure to get rid of them so you could set it up without interference. It was a fairly simple design, a claw that used the weight of the object it was lifting to apply the right pressure and strength when lifting.
You set the clamps up, straightened the limbs of the support, and then moved the claw in place, the three steel arms positioned above the handle of the hammer. And, naturally, you couldn't resist trying yourself first.
You put a hand around it and lifted.
For just a split second, you could have sworn it budged from the rock it was stuck in. But it ultimately stayed in place. The reports weren't lying when they said it was like trying to lift the world itself. You hoped your little machine would work.
And so you stepped back, taking a breath before activating it. Many lingering agents turned to watch as it gave out a mechanical whir and the claw attached itself to the handle. You waited anxiously, praying it would work, but quickly found yourself losing hope when the entire thing began creaking. The ground beneath the clamps cracked and shattered under the pressure and just a second later sparks were sent flying as the claw completely snapped off from the rest of the machine, causing it all to fall.
It took a good minute for you to process that the hammer had destroyed your invention. Hours of working without a single break had amounted to nothing. You cursed extremely loudly.
"Screw you!" You shouted at the hammer before kicking the broken machine. You winced as pain shot through your foot and pointed at it as you hopped around. "And screw you too!"
-
In just twenty-four hours, your faith had been shaken considerably. You remained in New Mexico even after your invention failed, hoping to find a different way to lift the damned hammer. But the reason your faith was shaken?
You had seen things unexplainable and incomprehensible in nature.
Shortly after SHIELD captured and later released a man named Donald who broke into the compound to try and lift the hammer, the small town nearby was attacked by something very huge and very dangerous named the Destroyer. It was a seemingly indestructible automaton.
It dispersed most of the SHIELD team who were there to witness its arrival but you were one of the few who managed to follow it into town. There, three people dressed like they belonged at a renaissance fair attacked it. It managed to defeat them and the same man who SHIELD caught before offered himself to it.
You thought he was dead after it smacked him away, but the hammer, the curious and unmovable thing that had puzzled everyone, flew right into his hands and he seemed to regain some sort of power. His shirt and pants were replaced by armor and a billowing red cape. He managed to get rid of it with ease after that.
You had just witnessed all of this and couldn't stop blinking repeatedly as it sunk in. How was it possible? How could one man do all that? And how could he lift the hammer so easily? And why did the hammer seem to conduct lightning? Was the guy some kind of Thor wannabe from Norse mythology? He seemed to fit the description. But surely that wasn't possible.
"Excuse me!" Coulson called, you and him walking forward.
You had to stop short and take a sharp intake of breath at being so close to this 'Donald'.
He was hot.
Like the hottest being you had ever seen. You probably would have swooned or fainted if you didn't have self control.
"I don't think you've been completely honest with me." Coulson was telling him.
"Know this, Son of Coul. You and I, we fight for the same cause, the protection of this world." He said. "From this day forward, you can count me as your ally, if you return the items you have taken from Jane."
A brunette came forward. "Stolen."
"Borrowed." Coulson retorted. "Of course you can have your equipment back. You're gonna need it to continue your research."
She seemed happy with that and the Thor guy you were still drooling over looked down at her. "Would you like to see the bridge we spoke of?"
"Uh... Sure." She nodded.
He grinned and pulled her close, causing her to laugh.
"Wait, I need to debrief you." Coulson said, only to be ignored as they suddenly shot into the air.
"I don't think he cares." You finally spoke up, staring at the sky. "I can't believe he can lift that thing."
"It's pretty cool, right?" Another dark-haired woman with glasses said.
"It destroyed my invention."
"Still pretty cool."
Still looking up, you scoffed. "I can't argue with that."
-
It had been a year and a half since Thor visited earth. You had been at work as a SHIELD engineer and inventor and it was honestly the best thing to happen to you.
You had the alias of Ellen Campbell, as well as a new bank, ID, and social security number. You frequently changed your look to blend in and travelled between states quite a bit for when different bases needed you. You had an apartment in Queens now as well. After keeping your distance when watching over Peter, you had been instructed to become more involved in his life which you were happy to do so.
You were at the SHIELD facility now after receiving an urgent call from Fury. You found yourself again becoming awestruck by what he had to show you.
Tumblr media
Helicarriers and quinjets seemed unimportant when compared to things such as norse gods and superheroes. You were staring at the thawed body of Captain America. Everyone thought he'd gone missing and died during WW2 but apparently he was just frozen under ice after a plane crash. It was... Amazing. "My dad won't like him." You commented, still smiling as you and Fury watched over him.
"Why's that?" Fury asked.
"Because Captain Rogers got to know my grandfather more than he ever did. Howard mentioned him a lot apparently. I would recommend keeping them apart unless absolutely necessary."
He nodded. "Advice noted."
"Coulson will be happy, though. My favorite agent gets to meet his hero. I hope I'm there."

This tiny chip can safeguard user data while enabling efficient computing on a smartphone
Tumblr media
Health-monitoring apps can help people manage chronic diseases or stay on track with fitness goals, using nothing more than a smartphone. However, these apps can be slow and energy-inefficient because the vast machine-learning models that power them must be shuttled between a smartphone and a central memory server.
Engineers often speed things up using hardware that reduces the need to move so much data back and forth. While these machine-learning accelerators can streamline computation, they are susceptible to attackers who can steal secret information.
To reduce this vulnerability, researchers from MIT and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab created a machine-learning accelerator that is resistant to the two most common types of attacks. Their chip can keep a user’s health records, financial information, or other sensitive data private while still enabling huge AI models to run efficiently on devices.
The team developed several optimizations that enable strong security while only slightly slowing the device. Moreover, the added security does not impact the accuracy of computations. This machine-learning accelerator could be particularly beneficial for demanding AI applications like augmented and virtual reality or autonomous driving.
While implementing the chip would make a device slightly more expensive and less energy-efficient, that is sometimes a worthwhile price to pay for security, says lead author Maitreyi Ashok, an electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) graduate student at MIT.
“It is important to design with security in mind from the ground up. If you are trying to add even a minimal amount of security after a system has been designed, it is prohibitively expensive. We were able to effectively balance a lot of these tradeoffs during the design phase,” says Ashok.
Her co-authors include Saurav Maji, an EECS graduate student; Xin Zhang and John Cohn of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab; and senior author Anantha Chandrakasan, MIT’s chief innovation and strategy officer, dean of the School of Engineering, and the Vannevar Bush Professor of EECS. The research will be presented at the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference.
Side-channel susceptibility
The researchers targeted a type of machine-learning accelerator called digital in-memory compute. A digital IMC chip performs computations inside a device’s memory, where pieces of a machine-learning model are stored after being moved over from a central server.
The entire model is too big to store on the device, but by breaking it into pieces and reusing those pieces as much as possible, IMC chips reduce the amount of data that must be moved back and forth.
But IMC chips can be susceptible to hackers. In a side-channel attack, a hacker monitors the chip’s power consumption and uses statistical techniques to reverse-engineer data as the chip computes. In a bus-probing attack, the hacker can steal bits of the model and dataset by probing the communication between the accelerator and the off-chip memory.
Digital IMC speeds computation by performing millions of operations at once, but this complexity makes it tough to prevent attacks using traditional security measures, Ashok says.
She and her collaborators took a three-pronged approach to blocking side-channel and bus-probing attacks.
First, they employed a security measure where data in the IMC are split into random pieces. For instance, a bit zero might be split into three bits that still equal zero after a logical operation. The IMC never computes with all pieces in the same operation, so a side-channel attack could never reconstruct the real information.
But for this technique to work, random bits must be added to split the data. Because digital IMC performs millions of operations at once, generating so many random bits would involve too much computing. For their chip, the researchers found a way to simplify computations, making it easier to effectively split data while eliminating the need for random bits.
Second, they prevented bus-probing attacks using a lightweight cipher that encrypts the model stored in off-chip memory. This lightweight cipher only requires simple computations. In addition, they only decrypted the pieces of the model stored on the chip when necessary.
Third, to improve security, they generated the key that decrypts the cipher directly on the chip, rather than moving it back and forth with the model. They generated this unique key from random variations in the chip that are introduced during manufacturing, using what is known as a physically unclonable function.
“Maybe one wire is going to be a little bit thicker than another. We can use these variations to get zeros and ones out of a circuit. For every chip, we can get a random key that should be consistent because these random properties shouldn’t change significantly over time,” Ashok explains.
They reused the memory cells on the chip, leveraging the imperfections in these cells to generate the key. This requires less computation than generating a key from scratch.
“As security has become a critical issue in the design of edge devices, there is a need to develop a complete system stack focusing on secure operation. This work focuses on security for machine-learning workloads and describes a digital processor that uses cross-cutting optimization. It incorporates encrypted data access between memory and processor, approaches to preventing side-channel attacks using randomization, and exploiting variability to generate unique codes. Such designs are going to be critical in future mobile devices,” says Chandrakasan.
Safety testing
To test their chip, the researchers took on the role of hackers and tried to steal secret information using side-channel and bus-probing attacks.
Even after making millions of attempts, they couldn’t reconstruct any real information or extract pieces of the model or dataset. The cipher also remained unbreakable. By contrast, it took only about 5,000 samples to steal information from an unprotected chip.
The addition of security did reduce the energy efficiency of the accelerator, and it also required a larger chip area, which would make it more expensive to fabricate.
The team is planning to explore methods that could reduce the energy consumption and size of their chip in the future, which would make it easier to implement at scale.
“As it becomes too expensive, it becomes harder to convince someone that security is critical. Future work could explore these tradeoffs. Maybe we could make it a little less secure but easier to implement and less expensive,” Ashok says.
The research is funded, in part, by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, the National Science Foundation, and a Mathworks Engineering Fellowship.
