My lyoko designs ref sheet

after a long break I'm finally back to working on the chronicles, and I'm now up to book 3 chapter 15. the end feels so close yet so far.

I fell off it for a few reasons but mostly because I was getting bored with the story and it felt like a chore trying to get through it. even just doing a single chapter takes a long time (rightfully so, translation shouldn't be rushed) and combined with a plot that wasn't holding my attention, it was hard to motivate myself to keep going. taking a break was good, and seeing the state of the currently available release, the job really needs to be done. but hey, I have until september to make it before the 10-year anniversary window closes (aaaaghhhh)

some spoilers ahead

and it's a shame because I did really enjoy books 1 and 2. they were a nice cosy story about the gang recounting their story and then beginning to unravel the mysteries of the hermitage and anthea's disappearance, all while xana is working to get closer to them and infiltrate the group, being very careful with the information he chooses to reveal so as not to tip them off or give them an advantage.

then book 3 comes along and it starts off ok. but if I could point to the spot where things took a nosedive, I think it was when xana showed up in humanoid form. there's something not good about the characters thinking of xana as this dangerous, merciless, emotionless computer program that's out to kill them, and xana acting all powerful and evil, but then he just starts dumping exposition and giving his enemies useful information seemingly only to move the plot along. it was weird when he was like "I could kill you right now, I don't even care" to ulrich and then they just go on a gay little stroll around the city together and xana helpfully explains more things with an evil smirk on his face.

it's also around that same time the gang gets split up and there are lots more other characters involved, a lot of them either completely new, or existing characters who've been changed a hell of a lot. and I get it but it feels a bit messy, and the darker tone is hampered by caricature characters.

I don't have much of an issue with the overall plot, I think it's mainly just the characterisation that could have used work. also the handling of the abusive parent stuff uhhhhh

anyway I wouldn't say the books are bad, I just wish they were better :B and at least every cl sequel/adaptation manages to get jim right

I can’t believe Odd asked Eva to sleep with him! 0///0 I mean, I can believe it, because he’s such a ladies’ man, but I can’t believe he actually said that “on screen”! I expect that he just meant for her to sleep in the room with him, but still, wow! And she was possessed by Xana, of course, but for her to look at him “predatorily” and then invite him to come sleep over her place…!

1 Inuyasha

My very first anime I watched with the actual knowledge of what anime even was. Shout-out to my big bro for getting me into it when I was 10. Helped me make one of my very best friends to this day and I have such fond memories of this anime. 💗

2 House MD

My favorite medical drama to watch! Some episodes had me thinking 'I can't believe my mom was okay with me watching this show' 😆 I still remember so many episodes vividly and I really want to re-watch it all again now that I'm an adult XD

3 Chrono Crusade

Oh lord the things this show did to my teenage brain 💗 I shit you not I would finish this series and then REWATCH IT ALL OVER AGAIN ON THE SAME DAY, I was hardcore obsessed with this show!! Permanently altered my brain chemistry, and unfortunately in the process I watched it so much I ruined it for my older brother 😂😂 To this date this show has one of the most powerful shows of intensity coupled with the most bittersweet ending I have ever seen 😭 Like literally, hmu about this show because there's no one else I know that even KNOWS what this show is and I am always down to talk about this one any time!! (This gif of Chrono was too cute not to use!!)

4 Tiger & Bunny

This show. These two. Holy shit. 💯 they've definitely altered my brain waves too XD This show has some of the most dynamic characterization, design and storytelling I've seen in a long time! I definitely got into it later in life but I'd say I got into it at just the right time. An anime about the nitty gritty of superhero life specifically made with adult audiences in mind 💚

5 Code Lyoko

I was obsessed with this show when it first launched on cartoon network! A unique blend of 2D and 3D animation with all kinds of dangers and hijinks. The 3D is definitely a little aged but I think it still holds up well for a show made in '03. Me and my brother used to quote this show all the time and giggle over the dumb jokes so much that my mom dropped the rule of needing to be excused from the dinner table for reasons I can't remember XD Shout-out to Odd for being my first introduction to a cat-like person with his 3D model 💜

6 Case Closed / Detective Conan

Murder mystery anime for the win!! Still ongoing even after 28 years of airing 💯 I'm going through and trying to complete an entire series watch!I didn't get into this one until 2011 with the 6th movie (they played it at our library's local anime club meeting) and only watched the dub until recently, but at least I have a lot to watch! 💚

7 Xiaolin Showdown

I loved this cartoon! Fun, exciting, well rounded characters and villains, amazing plots and fun times all around! I remember they even had a contest for this show to design your own weapon that would be later added into the show! Jack Spicer is a hilarious villain and shout-out to Chase Young for being my first fictional crush ever 💚

8 Pokemon

Raichu my beloved!!! 💚💚Aside from Raichu, I loved this show growing up. Ash was such a fun and likeable protagonist for me as a kid and heck this show is even the reason why I have my irl nickname in the first place. I legit teared up when Ash was finally no longer the main protagonist of the series anymore lol!

9 Avatar: The Last Airbender

Ironically, we did not have cable at the time this show was at the height of it's popularity, so I was only able to watch it when my parents took me and my brother over to our friends house. (Our parents were friends so naturally all us kids were friends too!) But we would all get super excited when this show was on, especially if the episode was new! I think we used to pretend to be the characters? XD And I remember the eldest sister of our friends came by one day with avatar fruit snacks for us all, it was awesome 💯💚 Zuko still has one of the best redemption arcs I've seen in a show 👌

10 Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles

A middle school favorite!! For months I wanted everyone in school to call me Sakura 😅 Still have my DVDs and a few manga books for this series. Loved it a ton even if the anime itself never did wrap up the story completely. The OVAs were bad-ass though, and a lot of the OST is still downloaded to my ipod 💯 (Yes I still use an ipod in 2024 lmao) (Looks familiar? The Manga artists of Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Chobits also made this one - CLAMP!)

Holy fuck this took way longer to pull together than I thought it would! I think I spent over an hour?? XD But it was super fun anyway!! I will see if these cool cats would also like to do this one! (I can't think of 10 sorry! XD)

A compilation of interesting ideas you can steal for any fanfic writers like me! Ideas taken from other official works of Code lyoko, whether it's well known or not

(I'll shorten this since it's going to be a hell of a scroll)

Let's start off with the (not) fan favorite, there's not much to go off of, but anyways

Code Lyoko Evolution:

Episode 21 - Spectres on Lyoko

Essentially another xana scheme, where Xana creates bogus avatars of evreyone, and they have to differentiate between the fake and the real.

Personally, if they were given more reason or rewrite the episode, it would be a very interesting read!

Episode 15 - foreshadowing?

If you're like me who likes only three episodes, you'd know what this one's about: Xana creating a spectre of William trying to manipulate him back to him.

This could spark some interesting conversations, perhaps closure Will needed because let's be honest, he needs it

Episode 23 - Trap Replika

This one people don't talk about often, but when Ulrich and Odd tried to access a Replika, it opened up and a claw inhibited them from leaving, also fucking with the controls so they couldn't be devirtulized, or even move the Skid out of danger.

This would be SO tense, since you could bring the Kalimar back (since for some reason they didn't use it in that episode) and generally have a very intense moment where (whoever you choose) would be in SO much danger it would be so TENSE agh!!

Episode 19 - digital coma (?)

This one's a little weird if you're not going off of evolutions plotline. Essentially, the warriors trap a spectre into a scanner, and accidentally virtulizes it after it blows up (somehow.) It's this green code looking shit, and as soon as it touches anyone, it just immobilizes them, (they referred to it as a digital coma ig) and the way you kill it is to deactivate the tower it came from

Idk how the hell one would write the warriors actively wanting to trap it IN a scanner, but perhaps just before someone is virtulized, a spectre appears, and sends itself to Lyoko to induce the plot point that happened

Code Chimera - Quest for infinity

Basically a kill code for the Replikas with a different name (can only work in the main tower of the replika)

Idk, just thought this was interesting, that's it really

Volcano Replika - Quest for infinity

Many have heard of this one, but the volcano is essentially sector 5 but there's so many fucking towers and its so dangerous to traverse (this is where Xana lives now)

This one's a neat enough idea for new sectors! I live the ideas that spark from it

Insekts, volcanoids, scorpions, and boss creatures - Quest for infinity and get ready to virtulize

There's a whole list of creatures the games have introduced, most of them bosses, but insekts and volcanoids are normal enemies with unique properties, Insekts being buffed hornets with manta mines, and volcanoids being tough creatures that reside in the obvious volcano Replika, you can find all the bosses as a compilation on YouTube!

Not much to go off of in terms of just a simple retelling of the story that mentions some things, but I digress

Apis sapiens - Yumi WHAT???

A simular plot to "Swarming Atrack," but one of the bees manages to get into Yumis scanner, merging the two together, so Yumi has the head and wings of a bee (Yumi seems to not have any memories of this after Ulrich cuts its fucking HEAD off)

OH MY GOD PLEASE!! This idea has been played with such as the episodes "Laughing fit" and "Dog day afternoon," where Odd both times virtulized with something wrong going in the scanners, whether it be laughing gas weakening him or virtulizing with Kiwi after he was a dum dum (albeit not looking like a dog-boy hybrid) (thank god) but think of the ideas people!!

The best of both worlds - friendly creatures?

In canon, the volcano replika is where Xana puts his garbage, including creatures that are failed creatures. When Jeremie of all people virtulized on Lyoko (and no we don't see his virtual firm of course) he encounters failed designs of a kankerlat, blok, and tarantula, which are freindly! And become allies with him. That is until William comes in and kills them, whoops

Another unique situation! I definitely wanna see some first with friendly Xana creatures!

The final thing we'll talk about, we're almost there. The chronicles are such a mess to read, and i dont remember half of it because well- im not much of a fan of it, but it's essentially code Lyoko being more mature, and.... well idk how well they do it, but there definitely is unique ideas

Xana being....Friendly?

Way back when Franz created Lyoko and Xana, he sent Aelita to Lyoko so he could teach Xana about humanity, and for a brief while, Aelita and Xana were actual freinds, that is until he gained autonomy at a rapid pace and utamately rebelled

I'm actually using this idea myself, but not in the way the books you it oh my god why the fuck did they give him a fucking redemption arc

In the chronicles, Aelita is described to have a scar on her forehead, this being a fucking bullet wound when she and Franz were escaping the men in black

I too am using this idea, as I found it too fascinating to not use it. I mean imagine, Jeremie virtulizing her for the first time, and she asks what the scar is, to which he says instead possible, further hinting she is human

Going to be honest, didn't like the description all that much, I've seen better fan designs. However, his weapon. It's a small dagger, I can see him using that tbh

Okay, clever name aside, Aelita starts sleepwalking to the Hermitage, and soon figures out she was trying to tell herself something, which (apologies if I'm wrong but my memory is faulty from this godamn book series) she finds something, she connects to Lyoko, and it's a small place, where she can access memories Franz left of himself, lore reasons

I literally forgot what they were but they're the people behind Carthage I think

Doing a roleplay thing with my friends on the site Multerra, where I play Shulk as my main character. We were pitching ideas about how to make a plot work, and I thought "hey, what if X.A.N.A. from Code Lyoko were a character?" Then I considered if XANA were to possess Shulk, which would let it use the Monado. One thing led to another, and, well, here you go.

Winter William

This is an illustration of a scene from the first Code Lyoko Chronicles novel. The description in the novel is this: “Because at that precise moment, standing at the gate was their schoolmate, William Dunbar, wearing a grey woollen hat to protect his slightly-too-long black hair, and an elegant greatcoat that was zipped up to the collar. From his ears emerged the wires of an MP3 player, and the boy was whistling along to the music.”

As with most novels, a lot of it was left up to interpretation. When searching for a woolen hat on Google, most of my results were what I would call beanies. Since it’s a winter scene, I decided that was a safe bet. The “elegant greatcoat” was tricky, because what I think of when I read that is the same as what I get on Google when searching… which is a coat with buttons, not a zipper. I managed to find one coat that had an extra layer with a zipper under the button-up peacoat part, and I felt like this had the elegant aesthetic that I expected for William. It’s a little similar to stuff he’s worn in the show. Lastly, the gate was an embellishment that I chose of my own accord. I can find canon pictures of the gate outside of Aelita’s house, and they definitely aren’t like this, but I couldn’t resist drawing a wrought iron fence. Also, in retrospect, he may have been standing on the other side of the fence, because I don’t think he would have wandered into the Hermitage.

Yo, ummm, remember that I have a Code Lyoko superhero AU called The Amazing Lyoko Warriors? Well, TIL that Eva Skinner exists and, since I do not like her character in the slightest...I made her ten times better.

Behold: Disciple!

Eva Skinner as a villianous criminal mastermind known for her acts of domestic terrorism and her insane desire to be noticed by XANA. Click the read more for a better in-depth look!

AKA Eva Skinner

An absolute shell of a person, who wants nothing more to feel like she means something in society. However, she always got rejected by those on the side of the law, despite being smarter, richer, and more powerful than most of the adults in her life combined.

So, after hearing about XANA from a local TV report, she decided that the only way she'll feel like someone cares about her is by getting the attention of this artificial intelligence.

However, you do not get noticed by XANA overnight, and XANA does not care for petty criminals and brats. It only eyes for those with drive, power, and the capacity to achieve it.

So, in order to grab the attention of this goliath of a monster, Eva became a monster herself. And thus, became a supervillain.

Disciple, a criminal mastermind responsible for several local terrorist attacks, robberies, assassination attempts, and other horrible crimes. She always seemed to allude the Lyoko Warriors, always one step ahead…until they realized that she had placed a listening device on Odd, which revealed her identity to them.

Now a wanted criminal, she still acts from the shadows, desperate for XANA's affection…even if she has to augment her body with cybernetics and lose her humanity to get it.

She actually went to Kadic for a little bit before her secret was blown wide open to the whole wide world.

In fact, Odd used to have a crush on her before it was revealed that she was secretly the terrorist criminal mastermind supervillain Disciple...he'd rather not talk about it now.

She eventually becomes a cyborg, augmenting her body with various cybernetics to make her feel more in-tune with XANA, if very superficially.

Some crimes she may or may not have done/I have planned for her to do:

Bombs. Several of them.

Pouring mutagenic substances in the water supply (as in, like shit similar to TMNT mutagen)

Trying to kill the President of France

Hiring Chairman and multiple other villains several times

Giving Aelita a modified version of the bubonic plague

Making an Immortal want to destroy the Earth

And finally, my favorite: Trying to steal a highly dangerous device…just so she could impress XANA's right hand man.

She's insane, and I have not read Chronicles in the slightest, so this is not character accurate at all...but I love her.

Aelita Chronicles Redux designs: Earth and Lyoko

~10 years later I'm doing a (hopefully) final edit of the chronicles, and only just now discovering that the official french translation cut out a bunch of stuff? a lot of it is relatively minor, just some extra details here and there

but they also completely cut jim out of the hospital scene in book 2 and I think that's unforgivable

Writing my way up to H.G. Wells + J.R.R. Tolkien-tier and beyond

I mean, I would like to get a few short stories / poems / animation shorts / short films / "software toys" going and by far. So may as well pitch a few of my current narrative draft ideas for initial practice...

I guess I will make it clear that I feel a powerful need to write down immersive / cohesive yet oxymoron Axis victory set of stories. Most likely with some cultural & technological nuances (not about making Nazism, Fascism and others legitimate but definitely challenging some assumptions we societally made from the world wars) & conflicted characters as far as emulating dystopia-writing with a humane / relatable touch.

These are not the only narratives I would like to convey, far from it. I got a couple more related to historical "mysteries", my constructed world(s?) slice-of-life-s and overall making optimistic meta-narratives. Like some about my hometown, a couple around specific tools / challenges / design contraints, much about far far away alternate futures and a few drop-in "clef" replacements for some existing works with strong satirist-ic commentary & nuanced intrigue politics...

Don't mind me if I get started some onto the promised Jucika-derived comic strips and get the ball rolling on my open source workflow (first onto Kate + LibreOffice and eventually in the terminal with Tmux/Fish/Vim and all the other creative writing goodies...)
