Miguel lifted his hand up to shade his eyes so he could look at the sky, away from where the airship came to a halt and started to open up. His frown deepened. “About half an hour, maybe forty five minutes before I’m useless.”
“You turn into a pumpkin at noon or something?” Gladio asked, calling his sword from the armiger and letting it rest on his shoulder. It was one dropship, it shouldn’t be hard to clean up before then.
Miguel’s red eyes flicked over to him, and a rueful smile came over his lips. “Nah. More like sleeping beauty.”
Gladio snorted softly and adjusted his grip. He really wasn’t expecting them to be funny like they were, especially after such a close call the night before. It was almost like meeting another group like themselves — clearly these three had worked together for years and knew each other well, like him, Noct, and Iggy. Prompto would get there, but there wasn’t quite the right synergy yet. It would come with time, especially with how often they were getting attacked between hunts and daemons at night…
“You put your weapons in the trunk?” Gladio asked, not looking away from where the MTs were starting to drop out of the airship. One of them even had a flag. Pricks.
“Nope,” Emily chirped, and held out her hand.
It was a bit like watching Noctis summon something from the Armiger. The shape of a blade started to form in her outstretched hand by floating particles in the air, but that was where the similarities ended. Instead of crystalline motes it was embers, looking like sparks from a fire that swirled around her and formed the blade, until the center was practically glowing with inner fire. The tip curved upright into a wicked point, and the hilt looked more like a trigger clamp of some kind. The embers surrounding her weapon faded, but it seemed like the fire inside only got brighter until it solidified into molten metal that ran the length of the steel. Gladio swore he could see it moving inside the blade.
Dimly he realized that Yakumo and Miguel were doing the same, summoning their weapons out of what looked like a swirl of embers and sparks. There was even the faintest smell of campfire ash, just enough to make his nose twitch. Damn, he really, really needed answers as to just what the fuck was up with their magic, and how they even had it. It didn’t look like the Armiger, but it was too close for comfort.
Next to him, Noctis was idly flipping through his weapons, but his eyes were intent. They shared a glance, and Noct’s eyebrows rose just a tad. Gladio grimaced slightly and made a so-so motion with his hand, and the hand signal for “unsure”. Noctis just nodded and took a half step closer to him.
Sure, these foreigners said they had an alliance, but Gladio wasn’t about to take chances.

Going Under the Knife (Emily Sonnett x Kelley O'Hara x Reader)
You knew surgery was a big deal, which is why you'd did your best to hide it from your teammates, particularly Emily Sonnett and Kelley O'Hara, two women who were currently dating and two women you were desperately in love with. However, a single phone call draws them to the hospital, and to your bedside, where everything changes.
Your heart clenched roughly in your chest, your anxiety spiking as the IV punctured your skin, resting within a vein that would be used to lull you to sleep so the surgery could begin.
You knew your teammates would be livid when they realized you’d hidden your injury from them, but if there was one thing you didn’t like, it was to be fussed over.
You’d assured them time and time again that the slight limp you developed after a rough tackle during the World Cup was nothing to worry about, that the grimace on your face when you walked was nothing, and that the groan when you pulled your cleat off was in relief and not excruciating pain.
You stare at the white ceiling above you, glancing at the empty seat resting at your bedside.
You knew you should’ve told someone, anyone, that you were about to face a four-hour surgery, but again, you didn’t want to be fretted over.
Despite that, you knew you should’ve told THEM specifically, knowing that once they found out you were in the hospital and hadn’t told them, they would be far from happy.
Kelley O’Hara and Emily Sonnett had been dating for well over a year and considering this had been the first actual holiday they had together, you didn’t want to intrude on that.
Your heart again clenches in your chest, the surgery the furthest thing from your mind when you think about the couple.
It didn’t take long for feelings to develop between you and the couple, the light caresses, and the flirty retorts making you fall harder and harder for the pair.
No matter how hard you fell, you knew that they would never be interested in you, how could they when they already had each other?
You’re pulled out of your thoughts by the sound of a clearing throat, your eyes widening when you see your doctor standing before you, the man wearing blue scrubs.
“Are you ready Ms. Y/L/N?” He asks and you inhale deeply, your eyes fluttering shut as you nod reluctantly.
“I’m ready.”
************************************************************************
Alex Morgan rolled her eyes playfully as Servando chased her daughter around the living room, Charlie giggling wildly as he caught her, swinging her up into the air and kissing her face over and over again.
Alex’s brows furrow when her phone, which was resting on the counter begins to ring, the woman making her way across the room to pick it up.
She hums at the sight of the unknown number stretched across the screen, a number starting with, what she knew, was the area code for Seattle, Washington.
She clears her throat before answering, ducking into the kitchen to escape the noisy living room.
“Hello?” She asks.
“Is this Alex Morgan?” The woman on the other end of the phone clearing her throat.
“Ye-Yes, this is her.”
“Hello Ms. Morgan, this is UV Medical Center, calling in regards to a patient of ours, Y/N...”
***********************************************************************
Considering you spent your early years on the Orlando Pride alongside Alex Morgan, she almost immediately took you under her wing, the woman becoming not only a mentor to you, but something akin to an older sister.
It was soon after that, that she became your emergency contact, the woman the only one you trusted to handle an emergency.
Thankfully for her, she had yet to receive a call concerning your health, unfortunately, this was the day everything changed.
The second she’d hung up with the receptionist she immediately called the first woman who came to mind, her longtime friend and teammate Kelley O’Hara, who she knew was in Seattle with Emily Sonnett.
“Hey Al, what’s--”
“Did you know Y/N was in the hospital?” Alex cuts her off, noting the hitch in Kelley’s breath.
“N-N-no, what happened?!” She asks anxiously, her voice quivering, her distress alerting the blonde who’d just made her way back from the bedroom and into the living room.
“What’s wrong?” She asks, Kelley waving a dismissive hand in her direction, the defender listening intently to the woman on the other end of the phone.
Without warning, Kelley leaps to her feet before rushing towards the door, stuffing her feet in her shoes before grabbing her jacket, the anchor holding her into place being Emily Sonnett, the woman’s hands resting on her back.
“Kel, what’s wrong?” She asks nervously, the woman turning towards her, her brown orbs wide.
“Y/N’s in the hospital, we have to go.”
And with that Emily too begins rushing to grab her things, the pair slamming the apartment door shut behind them as they rush to UV Medical Center, and to your side.
************************************************************************
Despite the fact that UV Medical Center was MASSIVE it didn’t take them long at all to find where you were, Kelley rattling off what Alex had relayed to her on the car ride to the hospital.
You’d gone under the knife for ankle surgery over 5 hours ago, the extent of the injury you’d entered surgery for becoming much more prominent the deeper the doctor’s dug beneath your skin, which eventually resulted in a call to your emergency contact, that being, Alex Morgan.
“While we’re here, we’re getting added to the Emergency Contact list.” Kelley had mumbled as they rushed through the hospital towards the waiting area outside of the surgery suite you were currently located in.
Seemingly, the receptionist knew who they were, considering the second they spoke their names, she’d waved someone over, that someone leading them out of the waiting room towards a nearby elevator.
“The surgery went on longer than we expected, there was more damage to the ankle than we anticipated.” He explains as the elevator doors slide shut.
“Is she awake?” Emily asks, the man shaking his head.
“We had to increase the amount of anesthesia we used, so we’re having a hard time getting her to wake up.”
Kelley turns to Emily nervously; the nervousness Kelley is feeling conveyed right back at her from Emily’s hazel orbs.
“Do you know how long it’ll take for her to wake up?” Kelley asks, her fingers tangling with Emily’s, the blonde giving her hand a squeeze.
“We don’t know.”
The second the elevator door opens the man is leading them down the hall and into a nearby room, that turns out to be a secluded waiting room, offering the pair privacy.
“We’ll inform you immediately when she wakes up and leaves the recovery room.” He smiles softly, leaving the pair in the empty room, a TV hanging in the corner playing softly as the pair sit side by side on a small couch.
"Do you think she’ll be okay?” Emily whispers, resting her head on Kelley’s shoulder, the woman taking her hand, giving it a squeeze.
“She will be.” She whispers, unwilling to put her anxiety and worriedness into words, choosing to remain hopeful for the sake of the blonde beside her.
************************************************************************
As the time ticked away, the anxiety and fear within both women began to grow, and after an hour had passed, that anxiety was near teeming over, that was until the door clicked open softly, the man from earlier giving them a small smile.
“Ms. Y/L/N is in her room; I’ll take you to her.” He smiles, the pair jumping to their feet and rushing down the hall behind him.
“She may be in and out, she’ll DEFINITELY be groggy thanks to her pain medication, but she’ll be back to herself in no time.”
It doesn’t take long for the pair to be ushered into a room, the two immediately zeroing in on your ankle, which hangs well above you, your ankle wrapped tightly in bandages.
Kelley glances at Emily, seeing her own concern written on her face, the two slowly making their way hand in hand to your bedside.
A soft whine draws their attention to your face, your face which is currently scrunched up as you tiredly survey your surroundings before your eyes again flutter shut.
Silently, the doctor makes his way out of the room, the door clicking shut softly behind him, the three of you now left in complete silence.
You hum, turning towards the two, your eyes remaining shut before you peek between your eyelids.
“They must’ve really given me the good shit if I’m hallucinating.” Your tired eyes darting from Kelley to Emily and back.
“I’ll call and tell you guys later.” You whisper tiredly, your eyes fluttering back shut.
“You don’t have to tell us anything Y/N, we’re right here.” Emily says, giving your hand a squeeze.
“Alex called us.” Kelley says, shaking her head when you start to sit up.
“Well, I better call her back then.” You grumble, glancing around the room, your eyes still shut as you search for your phone.
“Sit still Y/N.” Kelley whispers, placing her hand on your shoulder to hold you in place.
“But I have to call Alex, she called me.” You mumble, completely unaware that the woman had indeed NOT called you.
“No Y/N, she called us.” Emily says, unable to bite back a smile when you turn to her in confusion.
“She called me, she didn’t call you, you’re not real.” You slur, the older defender on the opposite side of the bed cupping your cheek.
“But we are real.”
You shake your head.
“No, Kelley and Emily are on holiday together, because they love each other, not me, they wouldn’t come visit me.”
Kelley and Emily share a glance, Emily tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
“What do you mean Y/N?” She asks softly and you growl.
“Just what I said, they don’t love me, not like I love them.”
The pair stiffen, hearts stalling in their chests as the stare at one another in not only shock, but elation.
“What do--
Kelley’s cut off by a loud snore, the pair turning their attention back to you, realizing you’re again fast asleep.
Kelley gently caresses your cheek as Emily runs her fingers through your hair.
“Looks like we have a lot to talk about when you wake up, huh?” She whispers, ducking down to kiss your temple, Emily following suit moments later.
The blonde reaches across the bed, covering Kelley’s hand with her own, the pair sharing soft smiles before turning back to your sleeping form.
It didn’t take a genius to see that Kelley O’Hara and Emily Sonnett were absolutely smitten with Y/N Y/L/N, the moment they met.
The pair had been fearful when it came to their feelings for you, fearful it may end their relationship, but when they came to the realization that they both felt the same way about you, both had attempted to pursue you, something you were unfortunately not aware of.
However, with the sudden realization that you too felt the same, they knew everything was about to change.
“Do you think she meant it?” Emily whispers and Kelley smiles, glancing across the room at your sleeping form.
“I think she did, high mouths speak sober thoughts. I guess we’ll just have to ask her when she wakes up.” Kelley smiles, turning abruptly towards Emily when she sniffles.
“What if she didn’t mean it?” She asks, voice barely above a whisper.
Kelley cups her cheeks, resting for forehead against the younger woman’s before she presses a kiss to her lips.
“We’ll just cross that bridge if we come to it, okay?” She whispers, and Emily nods, the blonde unable to bite back a smile when Kelley kisses the tip of her nose.
“Okay.”
************************************************************************
It’s well into the afternoon that you begin to stir, pulling Kelley and Emily’s attention away from one another and onto you, the two leaning forwards in their seats, which they’d taken residence in beside your bed.
Your eyes crack open, your teeth clenching in pain, the overhead lights making your head throb.
Despite that, you keep them open, Y/E/C orbs darting from Kelley, to Emily and back.
“Wh-What are you guys doing here?” You ask, your voice rough and raw.
Kelley grabs a nearby cup and holds in to your lips, letting you take a greedy sip before she speaks.
“Alex called us.”
Your brows furrow.
“Alex?”
Kelley nods.
“The hospital called her, they found more damage to your ankle then they first thought, they wanted permission to continue the surgery.”
You hum, glancing sadly at your ankle, which is still hanging high off the bed.
“Looks like you’re going to have a lot of down time.” Emily smiles sadly, caressing the back of your hand, causing your cheeks to flush.
“Yeahhhh...” You sigh, leaning back, your eyes fluttering shut as your head rests against the pillow behind you.
“Why didn’t you tell us Y/N?” Kelley asks and you sigh.
“I didn’t want you guys to worry, I knew you planned on spending the holidays together, and I didn’t want to ruin it.”
Emily scoffs.
“You could NEVER ruin our holiday, honestly, we were going to come see you anyway.”
Kelley’s hand rests on top of yours and Emily’s.
“We really wanted you to be a part of it.”
Your eyes double in size, your heart skipping a beat in your chest as you glance down at your joined hands, your cheeks flushing.
“You had some things to say when we got here...” Kelley starts, and your brows furrow.
“I-I did?” You stammer and she nods.
“You did.”
You swallow roughly, your heart racing wildly in your chest, the thought you may have confessed your feelings making your palms go clammy.
“Wh-Wh-What did I say?” You stutter, eyeing your blankets nervously.
“Well, you didn’t think we were real.” Emily smiles and you chuckle, shaking your head.
“What else did I do?” You ask Emily and Kelley sharing a glance, which goes unnoticed by you.
Kelley clears her throat.
“You said we didn’t love you.” She whispers, your head snapping upwards, your eyes locking with her dark brown orbs.
“Wh-What...?” You stutter, sliding your hand out from beneath there’s only for Kelley to catch your hand before you can rest it in your lap.
“You said we didn’t love you, like you loved us.”
You mouth falls open, your eyes darting between the two women as your cheeks redden, the tips of your ears beginning to burn as your gaze falls to your lap, tears prickling at the corners of your eyes.
“I-I-I'm so sorry... Y-You weren’t supposed to find out... I-I-I... I mean...” You mumble, unable to look at the two women.
Unbeknownst to you, Kelley glances at Emily, who nods, the woman cupping your cheek before turning you towards her, your eyes glassy as they meet her brown orbs.
“I don’t know where you got that idea.” She whispers, your eyes widening dramatically when Emily glances at Kelley.
“What idea?” You ask, your voice quivering, Kelley tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
“The idea that we don’t love you like we love each other.”
Your heart stalls in your chest, your eyes darting from brown orbs, to hazel orbs and back, your breath hitching when Kelley’s brown orbs drop to your lips, her tongue running along her lips before she begins leaning in.
Your breath catches in your throat, the thought that this may still be a hallucination still prominent in your mind, that is until Kelley’s lips meet yours for the first time, her hands gently cupping your cheeks.
All thoughts of this being a hallucination leave your mind as the woman kisses you softly, your bottom lip trapped between hers as the two of you kiss, parting with much reluctance.
Kelley’s forehead rests against yours the woman smiling softly.
Moments later she’s pulling away, her forehead being replaced by Emily’s her hazel orbs locking with yours as she leans in, her eyes fluttering shut as her lips too, meet yours.
You cup her cheek boldly, your fingers tangling in her hair as you kiss, the woman sighing against your lips.
Again, you part, the blonde pulling back, only to turn your head, kissing your temple softly, the older of the pair resting her head against your own as well.
“So, what do you think now?” Kelley whispers and you chuckle.
“I’m thinking I REALLY hope I’m not still hallucinating.”
Kelley chuckles as Emily giggles, their laughter contagious despite the pain you’re currently feeling.
"How can we convince you that this is real?” Kelley asks and you grin.
“I mean, a few more kisses might help.” You shrug, unable to bite back a grin.
Kelley and Emily share a glance, the two grinning before Kelley leans back in.
“I think that can be arranged.”

Per @aroaessidhe: Little Thieves, The Kindred, The Summer of Bitter and Sweet, Gender Queer, (and I think The Bone Season?) have ace or demisexual MCs, not aromantic. also, a lot of the rest are side characters, not main characters.
Thank you, genuinely, so much, for this correction. I'm very sorry for the mistake. I create these guides between work assignments (I work from home, around the clock, trying to make ends meet in this mess of an economy) and didn't do my due diligence in double-checking every book. I think this started as an aro/ace list I was compiling and I tried to separate it into two guides. I apologize for the discrepancy vehemently and will strive to do better in the future. Thank you for catching my error.

Trilogy Of Deep Sea Horror
By Glenn Riley, Lady Eckland and Ms Darkwood
The Abyssal Symphony
By Lady Eckland
Dr. Eliza Crane pressed her forehead against the thick viewport of the Poseidon's submersible, watching the absolute darkness beyond. At these depths, their exterior lights barely penetrated the crushing void.
"Sonar's picking up something strange," Marcus said from the pilot's station. His fingers danced across the holographic controls, adjusting frequencies. "Listen to this."
He switched the audio to the cabin speakers. A low, pulsing tone filled the space, almost subsonic. It made Eliza's teeth ache.
"That's not geological," she said, reaching for her tablet. "The pattern's too regular. Too... deliberate."
Dr. Chen, their marine acoustics expert, leaned forward. "It's like whale song, but the frequency's all wrong. Nothing that size could survive down here."
The sound changed, becoming more complex. Harmonics layered upon harmonics, creating a melody that seemed to bypass their ears and resonate directly in their bones.
"We should collect our samples and begin ascent," Eliza said, but her voice sounded distant, even to herself. The song was... beautiful. Like a lullaby she'd always known but somehow forgotten.
"Look," whispered Sarah, their junior researcher. She pointed through the viewport, where something pale and massive moved just beyond their lights. "Those aren't rocks."
Eliza saw it too – structures rising from the seafloor, impossibly tall and graceful. Towers of bone-white material that shouldn't exist at this depth, arranged in geometric patterns that hurt her eyes.
"Why aren't we ascending?" she asked, forcing the words past lips that felt numb.
Marcus didn't respond. His hands were slack on the controls, his eyes fixed on the darkness beyond. A smile played at the corners of his mouth.
"Marcus!" Eliza grabbed his shoulder, but he shrugged her off.
"Don't you hear it?" he whispered. "They're calling us home."
The song grew louder, and with it came visions – promises of knowledge and beauty beyond human comprehension. Eliza felt her resolve weakening. Through the viewport, something vast shifted in the darkness. She caught a glimpse of eyes larger than the submersible, pupils split like cuttlefish, watching.
"Emergency ascent!" she screamed, lunging for the controls. "Override code Crane-Delta-Seven!"
The submersible's engines roared to life, but the song followed them up through the crushing depths. In the darkness below, something ancient and patient continued its eternal symphony, knowing that sooner or later, they would return to its embrace.
The Black Reef
By Glenn Riley
Jake Morrison yanked at his diving gear, checking straps with trembling fingers. The search and rescue boat pitched in the rough seas off Harrow's Bay.
"You don't have to do this," Captain Sarah Wells said, watching him prepare. "We can wait for the Coast Guard."
Jake shook his head. "My sister's down there. Emily's one of the missing divers. I'm not waiting."
The black reefs loomed beneath the surface like jagged teeth. Local fishermen refused to go near them, speaking of bad luck and ancient curses. Now four divers had vanished exploring the legendary shipwrecks trapped in their depths.
"Thirty minutes," Sarah said firmly. "Then you surface, no matter what. Clear?"
"Crystal." Jake pulled on his mask and rolled backward into the churning water.
The descent was quick. Visibility grew worse as he approached the reef. His lights revealed walls of dark stone shot through with veins of phosphorescent blue. Except... the patterns were wrong. Too regular. Too organic.
His radio crackled. "Jake, how's it look down there?"
"Strange," he replied. "These aren't normal rock formations. They're—" He broke off as something caught his eye. A flash of pale flesh among the darkness.
"Emily?" he called out, knowing she couldn't hear him underwater. But the figure turned, and Jake's heart stopped.
It was his father, dead these past five years. He smiled and beckoned, disappearing into a crevice.
"Dad?" Jake kicked after him, reason warring with impossible hope. The radio crackled with Sarah's voice, but he couldn't make out the words.
The reef walls pulsed with that strange blue light. As he swam deeper, he noticed things embedded in the stone – bones, fragments of ships, and... faces. Hundreds of faces trapped in the rock, mouths open in eternal screams.
Something brushed his leg. He spun to find Emily floating behind him, her diving gear gone, hair drifting like seaweed.
"We've been waiting for you," she said, her voice clear as day despite the water. Her skin had a blue-black tinge, veined with that same phosphorescent light. "Join us, Jake. Become part of something greater."
He tried to back away, but his muscles wouldn't respond. Tiny motes of light swirled around him, and where they touched his exposed skin, it began to burn and change.
"No," he gasped, fighting against the paralysis. "You're not Emily. You're not real!"
His sister smiled, revealing teeth that had grown sharp and numerous. "We are what the reef makes us. And soon, you'll understand."
Above, Sarah watched the thirty-minute mark come and go. Jake's radio transmitted nothing but static and what sounded like singing. When the Coast Guard arrived hours later, they found only his empty gear floating on the surface.
In the weeks that followed, more people vanished from Harrow's Bay. Some were found walking into the sea at night, speaking of loved ones calling them home. The black reef grew, feeding on its victims, spreading its spores through the water like a patient cancer.
Leviathan's Wake
By Ms Darkwood
"Another round for the happy couple!" Gerard Chen raised his glass in the Oceanus Retreat's underwater dining room. Outside the panoramic windows, schools of luminescent fish danced in the spotlights.
Monica squeezed her new husband's hand. "I still can't believe you booked this for our honeymoon, David. It's perfect."
The underwater hotel was a marvel of engineering, anchored to the seafloor at three hundred feet. Thick windows offered views of the open ocean, while state-of-the-art stabilizers kept the structure steady against the currents.
The first tremor was subtle – just a slight shiver through the floor. The second knocked glasses off tables.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm," the maitre d' announced. "Our facility is designed to handle seismic activity. Security personnel will guide you to designated safety areas."
Monica pressed against the window, peering into the darkness. "David, look! The fish... they're all gone."
The ocean had emptied, as if every living thing had fled. Then the spotlights began to fail, one by one, plunging sections of the hotel into darkness.
"Something's out there," an elderly woman whispered. "Something big."
The water seemed to shift and coalesce into a vast shape. An eye appeared at the window – pupil contracted against the light, iris swirling with colors no human eye had ever possessed. It was bigger than a car, bigger than a house, and it was studying them with terrible intelligence.
Screams erupted as the creature moved, its massive body blocking out what little light remained. The facility groaned under sudden pressure changes.
"Everyone move!" Security Chief Rogers bellowed. "We need to get to the emergency pods!"
They ran through darkened corridors as the thing outside tested the structure's strength. Walls creaked. Joints stressed. Somewhere below, there was the sound of metal giving way and rushing water.
"The lower level's flooding," Rogers said into his radio. "How many people are still down there?"
Static answered him.
Monica and David followed the group toward the pod bay. Behind them, a window cracked with a sound like a gunshot. Water began to spray through the spider-web fissures.
"Here!" Rogers directed people into the pods. "Four per pod, no exceptions!"
But there weren't enough pods. Not nearly enough.
The creature struck again, and this time the entire structure shifted. Monica lost her balance, slamming into a wall. Through a nearby viewport, she saw something impossible – not just one eye now, but many, arranged in patterns that defied comprehension. The ancient thing outside wasn't just hunting them. It was solving them, like a puzzle box containing fresh meat.
"Monica, come on!" David pulled her toward one of the last pods.
"Wait," she said, staring transfixed through the viewport. "It's... beautiful."
The eyes blinked in sequence, and in that pattern, Monica saw the truth – they were never meant to come down here. Humanity had built their hotels and platforms and deep-sea mines, thinking the ocean's depths were just another frontier to conquer. But these waters belonged to something older than mammals, older than dinosaurs, older than time itself.
And it had finally awoken to reclaim them.
The last thing Monica heard before the structure gave way completely was not screaming, but a sound like whale song – deep, haunting, and triumphant. The leviathan had waited eons in darkness. A few more hours to savor its prey would make little difference now.
---
In the days that followed, rescue teams found only debris floating on the surface. The Oceanus Retreat had vanished completely, leaving no traces of its guests or staff. Deep-sea monitoring stations recorded unprecedented seismic activity moving slowly across the ocean floor, heading toward the next human intrusion into its domain.
In coastal cities around the world, people reported strange dreams of eyes in the deep and a song that called them toward the sea. But surely these were just dreams, weren't they?
Beneath the waves, something ancient and patient continued its hunt, knowing that humanity's hubris would always lead them back to the depths, back to its waiting embrace.

Salem, Massachusetts
March 22, 2022
It was now dark and Lee had been driving for hours, swaying back and forth in his Dodge Dart with the windows down and the music blaring, trying to wash it all away just like you said, but his version of that was sipping on his second pint of Fireball. He was now at the impaired level to where he didn't care if he wrapped his car around a tree, but he chuckled when he thought of how it would be much more ironic if he crashed into an oncoming train.
As he changed the radio station, he found himself screaming with vein popping rage at the top of his lungs when the song came on that he had texted lyrics to you of earlier that day.
I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you. Take me back to the night we met. I don't know what I'm supposed to do, haunted by the ghost of you. Take me back to the night we met.
youtube
Simultaneously, you had been doing the same thing, minus the booze but listening to the same radio station as you drove around, crying your eyes out to that song and looking for Lee after he had just left you standing in the cemetery at his father's grave. You had called him over and over but he had shut his phone off. You left repeated voicemails and went to every known place you could think of that he might be, but he wasn't there or anywhere. Lee was just gone boy gone.
Was it all worth it? Dragging the truth of his past out of him, especially on that day of all days? His father's one month of passing. None of that day was supposed to go the way it went and it suddenly went from bad to worse.
Your phone rang as you pulled up to your apartment, but it wasn't Lee. It was Emily, your good friend from Ireland who had extended her stay in Salem when Jason supposably died to be there for you, but in all of the chaos, you had forgotten all about her.
"Em?? Hey." you softly sniffled. "What's up?"
"I guess I could ask you the same thing." she scoffed in her subtle Irish accent. "Where have you been and why have you not told me about Megan?? I just found out from your mom who I called to find out where you were at."
"Oh Em, I am so sorry. So much has been happening and it's all just a mess."
"Right. Well...are you ever coming back to the ice skating lessons for the kids? I've been covering for you and I need a break. I want to go out with someone on the 25th to a party and I'd like to take that entire day to go shopping and stuff. Can you at least do it that day?"
The 25th...that was Lee's upcoming birthday which you had forgotten about too and now you felt like even more shit, if that were even possible. Of course, you and he were supposed to spend it together, but now, all you could hear was his cold voice reiterate through your mind...fuck forever.
"Hello? Josie...can you?"
"Oh...sorry, I umm, I can't Em. I just have so much going on."
"Yeah, I noticed. Well, I can't do it. I'm not missing out on my plans."
"Ok, well. Just cancel the class. There's plenty of time. It's no big deal."
"No big deal? What is wrong with you anymore? You love that class and the kids. It's like no one exists now except your precious Lee."
"Hey, don't do that. Don't talk about him like that."
"Whatever."
"Em I said I'm sorry."
"Of course. And that makes it all ok. I stayed here for you ya know? And I've seen you not even a handful of times in 2 months. Twice to be exact."
"I know and I swear, I'll make it up to you soon, just not right now. So umm...who's the mystery man you're going to this party with?"
"Oh so now you're interested in my life? Well, if you must know, it's Johnny."
"What? Are you mad?? Jesus Em. You KNOW who he is."
"Oh stop it. You're not my mother. I'm a grown ass woman and can do as I please. In fact, I've been seeing him awhile now, ever since he came to the ice arena that day."
"Well that's just great, so you're into drug pushing mob men now."
"Don't be a hypocritical bitch. You had your fun with him before too and let's not forget who Jason was and from what I've heard, your landlord is one too who you're quite cozy with."
"Wowww. They don't do or sell drugs Em! So now you're letting Johnny fucking Zacchara fill your head with bullshit about me I see. You've never acted like this. He's bad news and you know it and clearly, he's rubbing off on you."
"Get over yourself already. Jealous much?"
"WHAT?? Jealous of Johnny??? Em grow the fuck up. You KNOW I don't want him. If anyone's jealous, it's you because he still wants me and you know it and he's using you to stay in my orbit."
"Oh, that's right. I'm not good enough compared to you. Johnny could never truly like me for me right??"
"God, you sound just like Megan."
"Well clearly Megan had a point! Everybody wants Jo! Well you know what. I DON'T. Fuck off!" she shouted and hung up.
"Ahhhhhhh!!!!" you screeched as you squeezed your phone with two hands, picturing yourself strangling her.
As you made your way up the stairs of the complex, it slithered up on you like a python in the everglades, wrapping around your chest and throat and relentlessly constricting as it pulled you straight to the ground to devour you whole. Shaking, gasping, clutching your chest, you crawled towards Craig's door where his music could be heard thumping about. He was never going to hear you. You had no voice. Even if you made it to his apartment, you didn't have the strength to bang on the door or reach for the handle that you knew was locked. You frantically dumped your purse out and grabbed your phone but in your frenzy for air, you couldn't turn it on. You must have literally squeezed the life out of it like your anxiety was doing to you at that moment. It was time to focus and fight. Your ears concentrated on the muffled music, your hands focused on the feel of the carpet beneath you, your tongue could taste your chap stick but your nose, it was useless to search for smell. Your eyes then caught sight of the fire alarm that happened to be just above you. Reaching, stretching, grasping and clawing at the brick wall, your fingertips were merely inches below it. Time was running out. Everything was about to go black. In your desperation, you found one last boost of adrenaline to lunge upwards and pull the lever. Ear piercing decibels sounded through the halls and blinding overhead lights kicked on as you slid down the wall, and then...there was darkness.
"Jo! Jo, come on sweetheart, wake up!" a desperate voice echoed in a gargle, sounding as if it were underwater.
"Miss March, can you hear me? Open your eyes for me." another voice, unfamiliar, stern but calm and more clear triggered the flickering of your lids.
"That a girl, there you are." the voice continued and now you could make out a face.
It was an EMT. As you gasped and darted your eyes all around, you then realized you were in the back of an ambulance. You swiftly sat up, knocking the oxygen mask from your face to see the very frightened face of Craig gaping in at you from outside the open back doors. Behind him was your car and a firetruck there, red lights swirling about. You were still at the complex.
"C..Craig??" you fearfully stammered and began to sob.
The EMT quickly jumped back before he knocked senseless by Craig's catapulting entrance. As soon as he reached you, he pulled you right onto his arms, clutching you tighter than the snake attack had done.
"Jesus Jo. You...you weren't breathing. You scared me to death. Don't cry. Don't cry. I've got you." Craig huffed into your ear.
"What...what happened??" you squeaked through his beastly bear hug.
He leaned back and cradled your face in both hands, his baby blues glassy and wet as he began to ramble. "I...I heard the alarm and ran out to find you unconscious in the hall. I had to give you cpr Jo and then finally, you gasped the most beautiful, sweet breathtaking breath I had ever heard besides Blaise's when she was born, but you were still out of it and then the EMS got here and I informed them of what I knew, about your anxiety and all and..."
"Oh my god...I...I remember now...I...it just hit me and I...I couldn't get to you...I pulled the alarm..."
Craig stroked your cheek and became the most open and vulnerable that you had ever seen him. "Thank the mighty lord above that you did or you'd be...Jo...I don't know what I would have done if I had lost you."
"You...you saved me? Craig...I...I don't know what to say."
"You can call him a hero Ma'am." the EMT intruded. "His quick thinking and actions kept you alive until we could treat you. With that said, we really should take you to the hospital now."
Panic crept up on you again and you began to ramble and beg. "N...NO. I am fine. I feel fine. I'm used to these attacks and I have meds for it...and my mom...she don't need this. No Craig...no, tell him I'm fine and that you'll be with me...right?? You'll stay with me...won't you?? Please don't make me go...PLEASE!"
"Jo I...I can't make you do anything and I won't...but...I'm worried about you. I know you know your body and all, but I also know you do not take your meds..."
"Craig...I swear to you....I am alright. I would never lie to you....not again."
"Not even to save your ass from going to the hospital?" he softly grinned as he stroked your hair. "And to be clear, you never lied to me. At least I don't see it that way."
"No...I won't lie even for that. I just don't want to go when I know I'm alright now thanks to you....and I don't want to face Orlando or Dave right now either. Can we please just go inside."
"I'll tell you what. Let's compromise. Please, for me, go to the hospital just to get checked out and then if all is good, I promise, I will bring you right back here. You'll be in the ER so I doubt your mom will see you and if you see your doctor friends, then you can ask them not to tell her. I will stay right by your side Jo. Please, it will make my heavy heart feel so much better."
His damn smile had some way with you. "Fine. I'll go but not in the ambulance. You have to take me."
"Deal."
You were quiet the entire car ride, staring out into the darkness while feeling Craig's eyes glancing upon you from time to time, but he also remained quiet. Knowing the man you had come to know, you knew he was trying to be respectful and let you rest. When you were ready to talk to him about things, you would. You knew though that you would be talking soon enough...to Orlando because he was the general physician of the ER and sure enough, his car was there when you arrived and he was at the nurses station when you walked in.
Orlando's eyes widened with fright and he sped right to you, offering a hand of support under you elbow and frowning as he gazed at your forehead.
"Josie? What happened?? You're limping and you have what looks like rug burn on your head."
"I...do? I guess I should have looked in the mirror. It's no big deal Landy. I just had a..."
Orlando's chocolate eyes became black as licorice as they darted over to Craig with a death glare. "What did you do to her!" he snarled and inserted himself between you and the man he knew was a mobster.
"Whoaaa down Fido." Craig commanded in a most calm and collected manner. It was not easy to intimidate him from all that you had seen.
"Landy, no. He didn't do anything to me. If anything, he saved my life."
"What??" Orlando gasped as his concerned eyes bolted back to you.
"I...I had a panic attack. A bad one and I passed out. I must have hit my knee when I fell and my head too. Craig found me and he helped me. I wasn't breathing, so....that's why I'm here. He really wanted me to come be checked out."
Feeling rather foolish, the good doctor apologized, but you still saw it in his eyes that he did not trust Craig, nor like him at all. "My apologies. I shouldn't have made presumptions. Thank you for what you did."
Craig's simple reply carried a hint of cockiness in his tone that you immediately recognized. He had been offended and you hoped he would let it go, but... there was also the fact Landy was Ethan's brother and you knew that didn't sit well with Craig either, even if Orlando was nothing like Ethan. "No worries Dr. Bloom."
"Alright, let's get you in a cubicle. Looks like I'll be your doctor again." Landy grinned and led you away.
"Wait!" you snapped and halted to look at Craig. "He comes too. I want him there."
The two men locked eyes. Craig's were smug and satisfied. Landy's were perplexed and wary.
Orlando was stern in his stance as a physician and as your friend. "He may come in AFTER we get you situated and assessed."
Your eyes saddened as you moved them to Craig's. "It's alright sweetheart. I'll be right outside this door." He assured and then his eyes went straight back to Orlando's with warning. "I'm not going anywhere."
Landy angrily whipped the curtain shut behind the two of you. "Sweetheart??" he groaned. "I do not like that guy. Since when are you so friendly with him??"
"Landy. Let's not talk about Craig right now...or ever for that matter. He cares about me, that's all and don't forget, I'm breathing because of him. Now...I need you to PLEASE not tell my mom about this..or Dave or...well, it don't matter."
"Lee? Did you ever find him after you called me earlier?"
"No and we're not talking about him either got it?? Can we just get this over with and this day already??" you snapped as you sat down on the bed.
Orlando half smiled and his eyes fell after your harshness towards him.
"Shit. Damn it Landy...I am so sorry." you reeled and took his hand. "I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm just so exhausted, physically AND mentally."
His fingers caressed over yours as the smitten doc tried to hide how good it felt to touch you. "It's alright. I know you're stressed and how scary panic attacks are. They take a lot out of you. And my lips are sealed. I can't talk about my patients anyways remember? Let me check all your vitals, do some routine blood work and then since you did fall and have a wound on your head, I'd like to send you down for a CT to rule out a concussion and get an x-ray on that knee as well."
"Ughhhhh....ok." you moaned.
Landy did all his preliminary testing, then gave you a gown to put on and left and sure enough, Craig was standing right there when he walked out.
Orlando stopped with a hard sigh and slammed his pen down on his clipboard. "Stay put. She's dressing." he scoffed and walked away.
Craig arrogantly followed. "You know." he softly whispered near Orlando's ear as he came up behind him while he was writing. "I don't like you much either."
Orlando swayed around with a glare. "You were eavesdropping??"
Craig chuckled. "Curtains are paper thin, practically useless for sound barrier. I'm pretty sure you knew that when you decided to complain about me to Jo, whom...by the way," he raved. "She shut you down real quick didn't she? You see, it's really simple Doc. She cares for me and I care for her. Get over it."
"I'm sure her boyfriend won't...get over it. Did you forget about him while you're staking some wolfy claim on her?"
"No. But it seems he's forgotten about her. I'm pretty certain that he is one of or possibly even the main reason she had that attack tonight. From the things she's confided in me, I would bet my life on it." Craig then looked around with gloating eyes. "Where is the good Dr. Pace anyways??"
"Don't you have a daughter to look for or something?" Orlando irrationally retorted with instant regret.
Craig stepped forward, leaving only a foot's length between the two 5'11 men as his eyes and tone hardened. "You definitely have that Bloom blood and mouth don't you? I'd watch what you say to me, especially about my daughter. Ethan didn't watch what he said to me and he didn't enjoy the consequences of that. I will find that little bastard, mark my words and I will get my daughter back and that ball-less brother of yours will meet his judgment day right here on earth just as others have for messing with me and those I love. Even that cop brother of yours walks a thin line with me. Those who like flirting with disaster get eaten by the so called wolves you speak of, or in my world as they put it, go swimming with the fishes. Have I made myself clear Landy?"
"Crystal." he snapped and daringly pushed past Craig's shoulder to go back to you.
"Knock knock" he called out in a pretend pleasant voice before opening the curtain.
"I'm good Landy."
Orlando brought in a wheelchair. "Hop in."
You giggled. "I'm so doped up right now on what you gave me that I can barely move."
"Here. I'll help."
After he wheeled you out, Craig came right to you and dropped to his knees to hold your hand.
You smiled and took his hand as your words slightly slurred. "They gave me drugs."
"I can tell." he chuckled. " So you're feeling ok then? No pain?"
"Oh I am feeling just fine." you giggled. "You're so sweet Craigy. I'm glad you're here with me. You make me feel better."
Craig squeezed your hand and smiled, giving a swift, smug glance up at Orlando. "I'll tell you a little secret. You make me feel better too Jo."
"Well it's not a secret anymore silly. Landy's standing right here. Oh gosh, I just love your smile Craig. It's so pearly white."
He released a hearty laugh. "Just how much drugs did they give you?"
"It's time to go Josie." Orlando interrupted.
"Ok but...Craigy...will you follow us down and wait for me?"
"Anything for you.... sweetheart."
Orlando rolled his eyes and wheeled you off with Craig on his heels. Once you were all done, you were taken back to your room to wait on the results and to rest and during that time, Craig stayed at your side and listened to you blabber about your burdens under the influence of your meds.
Finally, you were cleared. No concussion, no concerning damage to your knee, just bruised, and BP and oxygen normal so you were sent on your way. By the time Craig got you back to the complex, you were out for the count with your head on his shoulder. Unable to wake you, he carried you up to your apartment and placed you in your bed, covering you up, then he opened a bottle of your wine and sat on the couch drinking until he too fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Lee had miraculously made his way in one piece to Gordon's house in Boston, but he was definitely broken inside. Once he forced entry into the garage, he began trashing all the contents of a storage unit in search of something important to him.
"Come on... Where is it??!!" he growled as he threw boxes and knocked over shelves.
Gordon was still up and heard all the commotion and when he got to the garage, he found his brother panting in a confused state as he sat on a toppled box.
"Lee! What are you doing???"
"Where is it?" Lee softly snarled through his exhausted pants.
"Where is what?? Why did you trash my things??? and...how the fuck did you get in here??? Are you drunk???? You drove here this way???"
"Spare me the bogus brotherly concern. Where...are...my...drugs??!!" Lee fiercely chanted.
"You're kidding right?? We, meaning you AND me, used that stash years ago. Jesus Lee, how much have you had to drink or...are you high??"
"I certainly wish I was! That was the point of coming here!"
"Well you waisted a trip. You know I don't keep that shit around with Donna here."
"Oh come on Gordo! You probably snort that shit from her ass crack while she's sucking it off your cock."
Gordon's eyes widened and then he raised his brow. "Yeah, I...I've probably done that a time or two...so??!!"
"Come on man...you can't tell me you don't have anything at all...somewhere!! A little white lightning...that's all I need."
"Well...even if I did, I certainly wouldn't give it to you!"
"Why?? Because I'm drunk??"
"Nooo? Because you're a dick!!"
Lee chuckled sarcastically. "Oh, I'M a dick?? Who's the one trying to take MY farm from me??? and who's the one who didn't show up today at dad's grave???"
"DAD'S FARM! and we're both his sons!! You got him to sign it over to you under false pretenses and you'll never convince me otherwise. He wasn't in his right mind! And...and...who says I had to go to dad's grave with YOU??? I can go by myself!!"
"We're both his sons, you got that right, but YOU are NOT my brother!! You never had one ounce of interest in that farm. You HATED it there!! Look at you...you're a big city guy!! You only want it to spite me because dad left it to me...legitimately!! He didn't want you to have it!!!"
"Whatever. I'm not doing this with you. You're fucking wasted. Look, I don't know what's going on with you, but you're clearly on some downward spiral and I'm not contributing to it. Give me your keys. You can go sleep it off on the couch and then get the fuck out tomorrow."
"Fuck you. I'm leaving."
Lee pushed past him and Gordon grabbed his arm. "No, you're not! Give...me...your...keys or I'm calling the cops and telling them you're drunk and driving!!"
Lee jerked his arm away and shoved Gordon against the wall. "I will rearrange your fugly ass face if you so much as touch your phone."
"Fine...but you're not driving."
Gordon gloated as he held up Lee's keys he had taken out of his jacket and dangled them from his fingers, then ran like hell up the stairs to the house with Lee stumbling up the steps behind him.
"Give them back!!"
"NO!" Gordon yelled as Lee chased him around the kitchen table. "Call a cab if you want to leave!!"
Lee hopped on the table and crawled over it, then dragged Gordon to the ground and pinned him down, aggressively twisting his nipples.
"STOPPP IT MAN!!!"
"If you want me to stop..." he huffed through pursed lips, "then just give me the keys!"
"Get off of him!! ALL I gotta do is dial three numbers Lee!!" Donna shouted from behind, holding her cell in hand.
Lee stood up, defeated but kept a smug expression as he glared at her. "Well if it ain't ass crack Donna."
"Get out of here Lee. Now." she barked, ready to dial 911.
"Fine...fine...fine. Have it your way." he snidely complied, then looked at Gordon who still laid upon the floor, terrified. "Your dope probably smells like shit anyways. I'll be back for my keys tomorrow."
Lee took out his phone and called a cab as he staggered his way out the door. When he reached his car, he leaned upon it and lost his footing. Sliding down hard on his ass, he stayed there and sobbed with his head in his hands until the taxi arrived and took him home.

pll rewatch 1x22
get its own post for finale reasons, the show does its first hitchcock homage, and the liars become the liars
getting ezria out of the way: even as fan of vest + tie combos ezra's outfit sucks this episode, he sucks for his useless texts, aria's tantrum at the faculty party is dumb, all of this is so stupid
ok ok the other note is that my friend remarked that when one of the liars goes "who do we know that's interested in younger girls" after the creep videos, none of them even think of ezra in that vein
which is distressingly warped even as it makes sense for these girls' worldviews: spencer does not view ian negatively until A gives them the video of him possibly killing ali, she views him positively in her flashback of kissing him
Spencer is so bad for saying that Melissa's baby might be inhuman but she is so fucking funny for saying "humor is subjective" instead of apologizing. I just really enjoy it when Spencer takes a break from being tormented to be the teenage brat she was born to be
Pam takes ten fucking years to answer Emily asking if her dad is okay and that is wild to me, Pam y'all are a military family and you should know better
why did the writers come up with this Texas plotline by the way, did they ever explain that?
Emily and Samara are exchanging the blandest emails. Why do all these girls email each other so much, the only things I emailed my high school friends about was schoolwork, otherwise it was all about texts
do you think they have negative associations with texting because of A. does only Spencer get tormented via email is she special like that.
Lucas is back! And still miffed about the danceathon ploy. I completely misremembered him already knowing Caleb before he goes on this fetch quest, but no, this is solely a "Hanna should know the truth" move
anw my take on how he tracks him down is that (1) Caleb's cheap-ass bus ride has lots of delays because that is his fucking luck (2) Lucas gets Caleb's number from Hanna's phone before passing it over to Emily
Okay, I make fun of the liars a lot for being super weird about the blind girl (who they are partially responsible for blinding), but most of the time I enjoy it, because of moments like this episode's where Jenna will be like come on bro :/ I'm just a girl who raped my step-brother via threats :/ just a girl who made a mistake and regretted it :/ why you gotta be so harsh bro :/
jenna we all saw you this season still trying to creep on toby when you were back in the same house...
this episode reveals that Spencer and I have very different notions of burner phones, because she bought this
while I would have gone for a nokia brickphone. Then again I think Spencer and I have different budgetary considerations for burner phones. (717 is indeed an area code for southern pennsylvania btw)
The Ian plan is not bad but maybe would be better if they didn't all swivel to stare at him instead of staring at the phone, you know, the means you purchased to communicate with him
All of the liars leave when Mona shows up (w/o busing their trays! Emily and Aria, your parents raised you better than this! Spencer had no tray and Hanna was not raised better than that) and I know it's primarily because they need to plot, but Spencer also clearly finds Mona super fucking annoying and I respect that
Emily when accosted by a cop that she should really trust him goes wow, maybe he has a point, and indeed calls Garrett later. ACAB, Emily, ACAB. (Except Officer Barry Maple, who has never done anything wrong ever.)
Okay so the real reason they made Garrett her former neighbour is so they could pretend he was on this street to see family, when he was actually here to get in on Rosewood men's favorite hobby: underage girls
why does he take off Jenna's sunglasses before he kisses her, that seems unnecessary.
please remember that Garrett's actor was Paolo in The Lizzie Maguire Movie. swear he was less bland in that
The Hannily porch scene is very endearing, Hanna is so delighted at the notion that Emily might have a type
Toby gets Spencer to chill out before she goes off to do her convoluted plan, which is a good dynamic for them
Spencer calls him a "safe place to land", which will come up again, and says she wants him away from danger because of that
firstly, sweet sentiment Spencer, but I do not think asking him to keep Jenna busy is keeping him safe, he would rather wrestle Ian in the woods any day
secondly, thinking about who Spencer feels the need to protect like this - she is protective over all the liars and Toby, but is she more "don't let danger breathe on them" about Toby and Emily?
at no point does anyone mention the car that t-boned Spencer and Melissa or its driver like, was it a phantom car, are Rosewood PD falling down on even this
Veronica gets some good mom points in comforting Spencer and telling her the crash wasn't her fault and that Melissa knows she cares
S1!Spencer is all about guilt so she takes this as her cue to nobly walk to the church to get Melissa's phone, only to get fucking jumpscared for her trouble
I really love the sequence from when Ian shows up till when the liars find Spencer at the top of the tower. It escalates so well, the tension ramping up, there's a phone call that forces the liars to simply listen as Spencer begs for her life and Ian recites how he's going to construct Spencer's suicide (and would have anyone believed the remaining liars if he'd succeeded?)
Spencer Hastings while being violently thrown about: Uh, Alison didn't die of blunt force trauma, she died of suffocation. ILU Spence never change
And she really gets thrown about! Jeez, someone escort her to a hospital checkup after this, there's probably a fracture somewhere in there
Love the liars fussing over Spence while she clings onto that wooden post. They immediately go "do not worry about having killed Ian, you are so fucking valid" and Spencer has to be like "no, I know it sounds like a traumatized mind coming up with shit but there really was a random hoodie that showed up"
That pan down to the body swinging and that being what set off the bells....still sick
Officer Barry Maple cannot believe these teenage girls lied about a fucking body, cue the entire town going whisper whisper whisper because they're all at the goddamn church
Even Noel Kahn. My dude, don't you have dudebro things to do that are more fun than this.
you know I bet Paige isn't at the church I bet she's at home stressed out about swimming or whatever. this is going to be my take on Paige for a while: that she has minimal awareness of the plot drama the liars are enmeshed in. Bet she didn't even know they got interrogated about rat blood trophy.
I forgot they have "I'm Not Calling You A Liar" play us out. Perfect song choice, but amusing solely to me, because: it is the first credits song for Dragon Age 2, and a long time ago someone asked me for a Hanna Marin crackship and I proffered Hanna/Fenris. Imagine the Liars in Kirkwall....
Our final A message of the season: It's not over until I say it is. Sleep tight while you still can, bitches.

Between the Blues and the Pinks (Ch. 14)
Ship: Alex Blake/Emily Prentiss
Summary: The Baby Blues: The temporary feelings of sadness following having a baby. Also known as Postpartum Depression. The Baby Pinks: The mild mania experienced following having a baby. Also known as Postpartum Euphoria.
Warnings: Mental health issues, postpartum mood disorders.
Word Count: 1071
At 2:30 in the morning, Emily called Tara...
At just before one in the morning, she'd awoken to find Alex's side of the bed empty and cold – clearly, she'd been up for awhile and Emily had a feeling that didn't bode well. She'd been awoken by Lindy screaming bloody murder, which was rather unusual behaviour for the infant who was normally quite even-tempered, in spite of her young age.
Immediately fearing the worst, Emily was up and out of bed, racing to the nursery to find it empty. Her heart was pounding with anxiety and she could feel the adrenaline racing through her veins as she prepared for the worst case scenario, even though she had no idea what said scenario could possibly be...
"Alex!" she called out, moving from room to room in search of her missing wife and daughter. "Alex, what have you..." She stopped just short of outright accusing Alex of doing something horrible and she hated the fact that her mind had even gone there in the first place. She took a deep breath, attempting to calm the panic trying to claw its way out of her chest, then tried again, "Alex, where are you?"
Still, she didn't answer and that did nothing to help Emily's emotional state.
When she eventually did locate her, it was to find Alex tearing the kitchen apart in an obvious search for something. She had Lindy balanced in one arm while she slammed cupboard after cupboard in her search, the sound obviously disturbing Lindy who was already agitated.
"Alex, what are you doing?" Emily asked, attempting to keep her voice level and calm.
Alex whipped around at the sound of her voice, obviously surprised by Emily's presence. "What did you do with them!?" she demanded, voice just a shade off irate.
Holding her hands up in self-defence, Emily said, "I don't know what you're talking about..." Attempting to change the subject, she added, "I think Lindy's hungry, why don't you pass her to me and..." She took a cautious step forward, extending her hands to reach for the baby.
Alex immediately turned to shield Lindy from Emily's reaching hands. "Don't!" she shouted, "She needs me."
Seeing how agitated she was getting, Emily backed up slowly. "Alex, just calm down," she urged. "Can you tell me what's wrong?"
"You won't believe me," Alex accused. "You never believe me anymore!"
"I want to help you, Alex," Emily insisted, "But I can't do that if you don't tell me what's going on, okay?"
Rather than directly answer that question, though, Alex instead demanded, "Where are all the knives!?"
"The knives?" Emily repeated, feeling fear climb up her throat as all the worst case scenarios rushed to the forefront of her mind.
"You hid them, didn't you?" Alex said scathingly, "You don't trust me, so you hid them like I'm a child!" She pointed an accusing finger at her, took several steps towards her, then seemed to think better of it and once again backed up, shielding Lindy from her.
Emily sighed wearily, doing her best not to show how utterly frustrated and exhausted and absolutely terrified she was just then. "Yes, I hid the knives," she admitted, "But only because I'm worried..." She'd locked up all the knives and the medications and anything else Alex could possibly have used to hurt herself or Lindy in the safe – which she'd had to change the code to as well, just in case Alex thought to look there.
"Fuck you, Emily!" she snapped. "If you really cared about Lindy at all, you'd help me, instead of acting like I'm crazy!"
"No one thinks you're crazy, Alex," Emily insisted for the umpteenth time. "We're just..."
Alex cut her off with an abrupt, "I don't care what your excuse is! This is an emergency, so get me a knife or I'll find one myself!"
Lindy was still screaming bloody murder and Emily could tell that her cries were only spurring Alex on in her frenzied state. "Please, let me soothe her," she pleaded, "Then we can talk about what's going on with you..."
"I'm trying to help her!" Alex maintained, "That's why I need a knife!"
"Why?" Emily pressed. "Give me a valid reason and I'll go get one..."
"Because of the spiders!" she shouted. She was nearly in tears now, though it wasn't quite clear whether they were tears of anger or sadness or something else entirely.
Emily raised a brow, confused but also intrigued. "What spiders?" she asked. This was the first she was hearing of spiders being involved.
Alex quite literally growled. "The spiders in the formula – the ones they're poisoning her with! They're hatching in her stomach and that's why she's crying! Can't you see she's in pain? That's why I need the knife – I have to get them out!"
Emily blinked in stunned silence for a few moments as she struggled to process a lot of information given to her in the span of a few short seconds. "Alex..." she said gently, paused a moment to decide on her next words, her tongue flicking out over her lip. "Spiders can't survive inside the human body. It's just not possible."
Tears welled in Alex's eyes, then, and she stomped her foot, rather like a petulant child. "I'm not crazy!" she insisted, breath coming in choked gasps.
"No one said that," Emily murmured. She took a chance and stepped closer and, to her surprise, Alex didn't shy away. "Why don't you pass Lindy to me and I'll go get the knife?" she said; it was a lie, of course, but it was in everyone's best interest.
Alex stuttered for a moment as she seemed to debate whether or not she could believe Emily. Ultimately, though, she relented and passed the squalling infant to her wife. "Hurry, though..."
Emily smiled (or, rather, grimaced) and nodded. "I'll be right back," she said. As soon as she was out of earshot, she'd pulled her phone from the pocket of her robe and began dialing.
At 2:30 in the morning, Emily called Tara...

There are only three issues I know of where Sai has come under fire for this, and even if you found her delivery to be a bit harsh or insensitive, I believe in all three cases she was justified in her actions.
(1) Sai redrew someone's fanart. This fanart was of Emily from Hazbin Hotel, an angel and the youngest of the seraphims. Some people believe that she is black coded or literally of African decent, and an artist redrew Emily to have darker, purple skin and a hairstyle that is more inline with hairstyles common for POC. Sai's redrawing of this fanart simplified the design (needed for cartooning) and unified its style with the style of Hazbin. There's nothing inherently wrong with doing this, but she was accused of white washing the fanart drawing when in reality she hadn't.
(2) Sai was dismissive of concerns about Voodoo in Hazbin Hotel. In a few frames of the series, Voodoo symbols appeared around the character Alastor when he used his powers, a fairly small nod to where his powers come from. Some people took offense to this while simultaneity finding no problem with Jewish and Christian religious elements being misused and lampooned throughout the show. In the end, we're talking about religion, superstitions, and if you're going to take offence to anyone misrepresenting your preferred superstition, then you're in the same camp as the people who get bent out of shape if you use god's name in vein or depict the prophet Muhammad.
(3) Sai was called a "wigga" for saying "homie" in a tweet. This should go without saying that Sai is not at fault here, the person who called her "wigga" is at fault for using a word that some people believe is nearly as bad or equally as bad as the n-word. Saying that she can be called a "wigga" but is not allowed to discuss why this was an absurd thing to call her is hypocritical and not worth exploring.
The final thing to add is that @anger-ey and others have misunderstood Sai's point for bring up that she's autistic, a lesbian, and an atheist. All three of these clearly place her in a minority in the US, and each group has been severely mistreated even to this day. She didn't bring up that she's a minority to claim authority in speaking over other minorities, she brought this up as a hyperbolic argument, a straw man argument to demonstrate how ridiculous it is that a person's minority status means that they can speak on behalf of all members of the minority, which is what the people talking to her were doing. Reading half a conversation and drawing conclusions out of speculation does not help further communication and understanding between people. You should consider the whole context of a conservation before making conclusions that are so needlessly critical of a stranger.
@anger-ey Have you read any of the tweets from Sai that you're referencing? Sai never used the n-word (she was called a "wigga", which is not the n-word, it's as much the n-word as the phrase "n-word"). She doesn't "talk over black people" – I’m not sure where you got that from unless you’re talking about people being upset with Voodoo in Hazbin Hotel, and then why wouldn’t she be allowed to voice her opinion on that? "Retarded" was not historically a slur because it wasn't used to disparage people who were actually mentally handicapped. The idea that it was and that it’s a slur was invented some time recently. "Queer" can be seen as a slur since it literally means "weird" and was used for a long time to disparage gay people. Sai uses the debate over “retarded” and “queer” being slurs to highlight how ridiculous it is that “retarded” is called a slur these days. She brought up that she was an atheist as a hyperbolic counterpoint to someone claiming that since they’re a minority they have authority to speak - it’s a straw man position, but a lot of people failed the grasp that.
On the other hand, Lily is a rapist, fraudster, grifter who brown-faces, manipulates her friends and audience, encourages anti-intellectualism and violence, and is one of the most arrogant and self-centered people I’ve ever known. Sai and Lily don’t even play in the same league here. At worst, you might not like Sai’s humor or the way she talks, but Lily is a disgusting human being who’s caused real harm to people.
Please actually read the sources of the rumors you hear about people next time, because nothing you said about Sais is based in reality.
