Loch Maree: Location of an Ancient God, a Dried Up Healing Well for Curing Insanity, and a Wishing Tree
Tumblr media
Loch Maree is a fascinating place. It has two graves attributed to a King of Norway and a King of Ireland’s daughter, a plaque for the last woman(named Wynn) burnt as a witch in 1722, and an ancient god named Mourie.
The “official” story of Loch Maree say’s that it got it’s name thanks to a man called St Maol Ruanaidh, and that it was he who somehow made the sacred well flow with healing waters. However, the name of the loch is older than that, and instead is named after a god.
Sir A. Mitchell, writing in 1860, says : “The people of the place speak often of the god Mourie instead of St. Mourie.” An old man in the district told him the island’s name “was originally Eilean mo Righ (the Island of my King), or Eilean-a-Mhor-Righ (the Island of the Great King), and that this king was long ago worshipped as a god in the district.” The Folklore Journal; Vol 4, Issue 4 by Gertrude M. Godden (1893)
Two records from 1656 (Presbyery Records) voice concern about “the abominations within the parishes of Garloch” in regards to sacrificing bulls on the 15th of August, as well as pouring milk upon hills. Despite the pressure to stop, the practice continued to the late 1700’s.
Tumblr media
Offerings of food and milk were not the only reasons people would visit the area; travelers also came with the intent of curing “insanity” with the healing powers of the well on the island.
"The earliest allusion to the healing powers of the well is the mention of it in 1656 as the resort of the lunatic- In 1774, Thomas Pennant describes how the patient “is brought into the sacred island, is made to kneel before the altar, where his attendants leave an offering in money. He is then brought to the well, and sips some of the holy water. A second offering is made ; that done, he is thrice dipped in the lake.” The Folklore Journal; Vol 4, Issue 4 by Gertrude M. Godden (1893)
The bringing of mentally-ill people to the island continued until the well dried up, and local lore blames that on a man who allowed his dog to drink from it. The man apparently wanted to cure his “mad dog,” —which often means the poor dog had rabies— but despite his good intentions, the act caused insult and the well ran dry.
After the well dried people continued to visit the island, but now focused their attention on the “wishing tree.” For it, people would attach offerings to the tree, which was then known for less-specific healing properties.
” It is said that if anyone removes an offering that has been attached to the tree, some misfortune, probably the taking fire of the house of the desecrator, is sure to follow. To each of the hundreds of nails, he says, ” was originally attached a piece of the clothing of some patient who had visited the spot.” The Folklore Journal; Vol 4, Issue 4 by Gertrude M. Godden (1893)
The surface of the wishing tree was described as white and covered with coins, nails, and other metal objects. At the base of the tree was a small hole with stones and rocks, which was where the well once was.
Sadly, just like how the waters running dry was blamed on a well-meaning person, the death of the tree also came at the hands of well-meaning people. Instead of silver coins or iron nails, people moved on to something more readily available; copper coins.
This was made popular after Queen Victoria visited the island in 1877 and added her own coin, and people still add to them in every available space today(even if the wood is unrelated to the original tree).
This is something I strongly advice against doing. Copper coins can cause copper poisonings to the area, which is what killed the wishing tree. Even if there is no life left on the island, the copper can still be harmful for wildlife. This is actually a common problem for coin wishing wells with fish; where the copper poisoning gradually kills the fish.

best prank my nan ever pulled was getting my granddad a pack of 100 cigarettes (if you've never smoked, you can buy 100 packs which is 5 packets of 20 encased in a plastic wrap, or a box)
she very carefully unstuck the outer covering and slid out all the packets
then she equally carefully undid the individual plastic wraps on the packets from the bottom (again, if you've never smoked, there is one of those little pull tabs at the top to take the top part off, but the bottom is folded over and stuck)
doing this without ripping the plastic is very difficult
she slid out all of the packets from their plastic gowns
she very carefully opened each box so as to not rip or damage it
she carefully folded back the inner paper
she removed every single cigarette
in one box, she replaced the contents with candy cigarettes
and then, painstakingly, she slid each box back into its plastic wrap
re-folded and stuck the plastic at the bottom
put them back in the outer plastic, with the candy cigarette one at the bottom (so as to be last) and restuck that
and gave the cigrarettes to my granddad

Han Dynasty Bronze Money Tree
The most cherished human dream is cast in bronze – the dream of money growing on trees.
Chinese custom associates the money tree with abundance and prosperity. The money tree as a burial item served to ensure that the deceased continue to prosper in the afterlife. Elephants laden with wealth roam along the branches emanating from the trunk. The ensemble of auspicious figurines refers to all kinds of blessings.
Pecuniary symbolism is combined with pretty archaic depictions of phoenixes and taotie-like (饕餮) imagery. The treetop Phoenix is a later modification of the Solar Raven, so the artifact becomes more and more related to the World Tree.
On display in Mianyang Museum (綿陽博物館), Sichuan.

Antonia's dialogue about the Gold Coin Tree
Thanks to a post by @lopposting, I learned about Antonia supposedly having some extra dialogue about the portrait you find in the hideout of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, provided you talk to her first after obtaining it. I was curious to see this for myself, and since I'm currently on my NG+ run, I used the opportunity to check.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get Antonia to share any bonus dialogue about the painting, so if it's there, I don't know how to trigger it. (If anyone does, please leave me a hint!) I did, however, coincidentally stumble upon some dialogue Antonia has about the Gold Coin Tree and the Alchemists that I was completely unaware of until now.
To get this dialogue, you need to unlock the Gold Coin Tree (take the lift in the Malum District Town Hall) and then go to Antonia and speak to her. (During my first playthrough, I made the mistake of picking up the portrait in the town hall and turning around as soon as I saw the lift, since I thought it would take me to an unknown area. As a result, I got the conversation where Antonia gives you the key to Rosa Isabelle Street first and ended up missing this one.)
Upon talking to her, you'll get the following dialogue:
Now, this dialogue is very interesting for a variety of reasons, especially since it might support certain lore theories I've seen around. I'll put the more detailed discussion under the cut, since it goes into spoiler territory.
[Spoilers ahead!]
So, the first thing we learn is that Antonia was aware that the tree was there all along - makes sense, considering she also knew about the hidden underground tunnels. In fact, I'd be more surprised if she didn't know it was there, since Antonia knows more about the hotel's secrets than anyone else.
More interestingly, Antonia mentions there was infighting among the Alchemists:
"The Krat Disaster caused the Alchemists to fight amongst themselves. Many people died or went missing. That's the real tragedy of the Rose Estate."
This dialogue has led to the theory that the mysterious Rose Estate incident was a coup instigated by Simon Manus to dispose of Valentinus as a leader, and having seen the full dialogue for the first time now, I feel inclined to agree. Also, I'm not sure, but since Antonia says the "Krat Disaster" is what caused the Alchemists' internal conflict, does that mean the Puppet Frenzy and Petrification Disease outbreak already occurred before the Rose Estate incident?
Regarding the Gold Coin Tree itself, Antonia says it reacts to Ergo somehow - I guess that's why P can pick fruits from it? (But if you need large amounts of Ergo to harvest the fruits, how was the Black Rabbit Brotherhood able to steal them? Then again, they do mention the Gold Coin Fruits aren't easy to get in their notebook…)
From both Antonia and Sophia's accounts, it's obvious that the Alchemists wanted to do something with the Gold Coin Fruits - the question is just exactly what. Perhaps it has something to do with the Saintess of Mercy Statue. The notebook of Alidoro (presuming it was written by the real one) mentions the tree being "used on humans". Could that mean that the fruits can be used with the statue to revive dead people somehow? (I wrote some stuff about that here, and how Giangio/Paracelsus might fit into this.)
Either way, I get the feeling there's more to the lore of the Saintess Statue...

Reading my little tree notes, and getting a little emo about them. (I swear a few of you were like "I bet I can make her cry")
This silly little web site has brought so many incredible people into my life, and I want y'all to know that your friendship has been so important to me.
Those of you that have rambled with me about That Thing We Both Love (or something That Thing We Both Do Not Like), those of you who I get to talk with in DMs or tags or replies or Discord (when I can figure out how to use it), those of you who "just" pop up in my notes often -- all of you are so dear to me.
I see your username, and think "that's my friend!" I'm glad I get to be yours, too ❤️
Wishing you all a year full of happiness and things that bring you joy; I'm glad we get to spend it together in our little corner of the internet.
