an unconventional study tip that has helped reduce my stress:

spend an hour doing a hobby you enjoy before leaping into your workload

this goes against much of what we read on keeping a good study schedule (aka get your work done before doing the fun stuff) but when you're stressed, it can be really hard getting into study mode when all you want to do is decompress

which is why allowing yourself an hour to do that thing you really want to do (NOT DOOMSCROLLING) can help you out in the long run. doing that thing you love will help calm your nerves and clear your head, making it easier to tackle your assignments.

get one good hour of your hobby in and then lock tf in.

Today I'm building enclosures for sea turtle rehabilitation and discussing water chemistry. I LOVE this part of aquatics work and I'm so tickled to be using knowledge I already have. It makes me feel pride in myself. My girlfriend is working on more equations while preparing for finals and the cat is so happy to have the window open.

I'm experiencing a lot of trauma memories today related to my last relationship. Memories that make me feel guilty, ugly, and used up. But I'm throwing myself into good music, tasty snacks, fresh air, and this work that I'm passionate about. I'll process more of this later.

I'm making a potato and leek soup tonight and I'm going to add maitake and black trumpet mushrooms we grabbed at the winter farmer's market last Saturday. I've been in the mood for something hearty.

Dare I say I’m enjoying law school so far??? Back in the library and back to learning feels soooo good.

The truly annoying thing about college is that I'm kind of expected to be a top performer because I actually buckle down and do the work. I don't even do it that well, I just do it, and so I get decent grades (not phenomenal, but good) and I'm considered a good student. There are other kids who are waaaaaaaay smarter than I am. When it comes to raw intelligence they have me beat all hollow--they instantly pick up on topics I have to grapple with for days or weeks of careful study. They will easily answer a question that takes me four or five minutes of puzzling over to solve. But they're flunking out because they refuse to study. They're failing classes because they won't submit work. I'm only considered a good student because I muddle through it and actually submit assignments. Imagine how much better they could be if they actually studied for their exams or didn't wait to work on their projects until the day they were supposed to be submitted.

ok this might be a little random but I'm sitting at my desk trying to make myself do my overdue assignment and one that's due 2 and 3 days from now. in one of the discord servers i am in they added a chatgpt bot for fun so i was like: " eh fuck it let's ask chatgpt" and it actually gave me the answer as to why most study/productivity advice (both for people with and without adhd) doesn't work for me when it comes to schoolwork.

it's cause i don't understand the task.

last week, i was able to do an assignment due in 3 hours within those 3 hours because i knew what to do because i understood the instructions. Last night, i was only able to answer the portions of the work that i actually understood and gave up on the rest.

so if you have adhd and are also having a hard time starting work maybe it's cause you don't lnow what to do or you don't understand how to do it
