To be honest, I don’t particularly seek out merch, nor do I always remember to document it when I come across it, so if anyone has information on this, I would be very grateful!

It's time again for another Library Trade Roundup! In which I talk about all the books I checked of the library on my last time around.
Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood -- I'm a sucker for a good black&white or black, white&color anthology and this one was printed in oversize form so it was like 1 1/3 or 1.5 times larger than a standard comic book. This was just a very enjoyable read. It had some great artists working on it and the oversized art was a treat to see. The black, white, and blood concept meant that the use of red was really effective throughout (with a special shout out to Declan Shalvey's story in the first issue and the single red lettered 'blood'). I am also not immune to the appeal of watching Wolverine commit bloody slaughter. I'll have to see if I can find some of the other white black and blood anthologies at my library.
Dawn of X vol. 2 -- After reading X-Men: Red, I've started dipping my toe into modern X comics at the beginning of the krakoa era. I'd read House of X/Powers of X and Dawn of X vol. 1 digitally but I picked this one up physically when I saw it. The Dawn of X volumes each collect one issue from each of the X-books so this one was 5 issue #2s which has been giving a different feel to the reading experience so far. I do like not having to worry about figuring out which X books go where. I think Marauders is my favorite series so far of the 2 issues I've read of each. Fallen Angels is yet to really click for me. And across all books, my continued reaction is 'watching X-Men evolution as a kid did not sufficiently prepare me for the presumably decades of X drama being referenced.'
Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja Omnibus -- All of my Omnibuses are these big honking things, so at 24 collected issues this has got to be the shortest one I've read. Anyway, I see why people like this run so much. The visual storytelling of these comics was very strong. Storywise, I'm not sure if I've got much else to say other than it was good, but it's probably not going to stick with me. I think it's much more likely that the visuals do. The Kate Bishop subplot confirmed for me that Kelly Thompson was a strong fit for her solo series and also that I'm less invested it. It might've been because the Kate Bishop issues were also the ones that tended to get guest artist fills, but I found myself putting down the book more often during them.
Paper Girls -- This was a wild ride. I'm not sure what I was expecting coming into this, but it wasn't what it turned out to be. I'm curious to see where it's going. I really liked Chiang's art in this and the cypher was very fun to sit down and puzzle out.
She-Hulk: Breaking the Fourth Wall -- This was just a fun read. For the most part, the comics this collected weren't trying to take themselves seriously and it made for a very enjoyable read. I also enjoyed all the fourth wall break gags. This is the first thing I've read of She-Hulk so I don't know if this is typical for her, but it made me interested to check out more.
The Autumnlands vol. 1: Tooth and Claw -- I picked this up because it had a pretty cover and it had colors by Jordie Bellaire, but I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed it! Bellaire's colors were gorgeous as always--I love how she colored the magic, but the plot also has so many elements that I enjoy. We've got the nations of magical animal creatures, and they're trying to solve the problem of why magic is disappearing and they do it by trying to summon the ancient hero of legend--who turns out to be a soldier from a technologically advanced time. It's not the most unique premise, but it's one that I enjoy and it's very well executed. The art's pretty and the solider guy is doing chemistry stuff with bat guano to make/harness explosives to blow up a bridge. What more do you need? This is hitting all of the notes that sucked me into reading David Webber books in high school. This story definitely has the potential to be a spanning epic, but it looks like there are only fourteen issues. Alas, I'll have to see how the story gets wrapped up if I can find the next volume at the library.

selected albums ive listened to in 2024
this year I'm just posting the highlights so itll be shorter
[1] [2]
January
1/ VHS Head - Phasia (2023) first new album of '24 for me! "Strange Food" that zap pew beat is a delight! title track is p good, floaty. "Phocus" this is very vaguely leaning into…funk? i really like it. possible highlight? wondering why it shares the title of a different album.
---
4/ VA - FM Synth 2 (2017) yeah i love fm "Mach 5 Fusion Force X" is a god damn tour de force. insane! "Work Without Rules" second fav of mine for its smoov smoov swingy wobs
---
7/ Skee Mask - C (2024) first 2024 album in the list! dusty, crispy, chillout. analogue. deep bass when needed, never too thick of a presence. delightful chillout music. at worst, its a bit varied, as if it were an anthology. probably because it is. highlight: "Bassline Dub"
---
12/ (all OCRemix posts from 2017) all over the place ofc some insano selections: "Multi-track Drifting" N R G!!! "Big Room Gobi" funny but in a goes hard way also: Star Salzman's Katamari mix!!! i keep coming back to that in particular
----
15/ VA - Adventure Time, Vol. 1-5 (2019) they have extended versions of some sc cuts!! "Party With the Chief" esp(!) the biggest thing I noticed overall: this soundtrack is so…wack. meandering. ADHD in control of a quirky ensemble. continually amazed that this's from a hit show
---
16/ Diverse System - JAPAN 2 (2023) a mostly rly good grab bag of bangers with a japan flavor! i adore the koto mixed in with tight electric beats. big big standouts with "灯火" !!! and the much more electric "Amatsu"
---
17/ Patricia Taxxon - Bicycle (2024) laid back (mostly) textures n vibes. instant fav in "Frat Claws" and "I Do" specifically! i really like the FEEL within the sounds. i keep coming back to "Chipshop" and "Boys". visceral.
---
23/ Aleksi Perälä - Starlight 1 (2018) surprisingly solid, albeit a bit all over the place much love for the smooth sounds of "UK74R1823040" much love for the stepfiltered "UK74R1823090" not as much a fan of the techno flavors this time but still!
it's hard to recommend this artist in general but ive been listening to a lot of AP music. just give those two highlights a try and see what you think.
---
February
25/ BT - The Secret Language of Trees (2023) THE GOOD STUFF Producer's Cuts especially!!! "k-means clustering"……. the clicks in "Time Moves So Fast"…. if you ever wished ppl made more music from 2007, here it is. a return to the binary universe.
----
40/ Tom Bragl - Regainable (2024) a few crunchy niceities, but just a few imo. "Klamra" f.ex. feels very 2007, which IS a delight. for anyone who wishes they made more music from 2007. here it is. funny it's marketed as "80s esque" lol. i hear it tho.
----
43/ µ-ziq - 1977 (2023) mike has a very distinct style that stands out from a lot of his peers imo. i wasnt sure about this but the reverbed minimalist drum machine in tracks like "4am" and "Belt & Carpet" win me over. I think those two and the weirdly hazy house of "Houzz 13" are my favs. "4am" especially, with those ethereal (newage?) chopped vocals
----
44/ Autechre - 2005-4-15 Glasgow (live set) apparently there are some old soundboard recordings laying around!!! this is super good. quaristice stuff. i love love love the multiple variations of chence9! the fast version of IO is rly good too. ez fav but still.
----
March
47/ STAFFcirc vol. 9: MIDI MODULE FANATIX (2024) oh hell yes, midi AND rompler!!! "Thunder and Strawberry Wine" is otherworldly. i get how it was made but also. How? ooooghhh… "30 Domcaster St" delightful ooooghhh… "Cascade rev.2023" authentic zest "Yakumotatsu" god i love this trend of pushing msgs midi to the max "tunnel7_r35b" listen i love chimeratio and he brought his slapping
----
57/ Fields Of Mist - Biospore Farmers (2024) try not to compare to boc challenge: impossible. it's lush damnit. but the perc is way way more analogue drummachine. its wall to wall good. that opening track would have blown my mind in 2007. they dont make it like that anymore, except i guess they do!
----
60/ pilotredsun - Achievement (2016) an album misplaced in time. pristine early 00s bedroom musician vibes.

Shadows of Treachery (HH Vol. 22)
Another anthology of short stories. But Honstly? Until now I have not been a fan of those. It's always a coin-toss in these stories, with the range being "neat" and "absolute boredom". Luckily, the average on this book was a lot better than the previous ones.
Tumblr media
Story #1 "The Blood Red Fist" was more on the boring side, mostly because it is essentially loyalists fighting and getting absolutely wrecked. I do not remember a single named character aside from Peturabo, but the main takaway here is the absolute fuckery of chaos. Rogal Dorn's order for the fleet to return to terra came in the wrongest moment. If it had come before the fight, they would have run and made it home safely with some luck. After the fight, it would have been useful as a rally point for the survivors - even if there would barely be any as Peturabo would totally shred them. But it broke through right in the middle of the maneuver, completly ruining any chances they might have had. Don't get me wrong, they wouldn't have won, but they would have dealt a devastating blow to the Iron Warrior fleet
Overall pretty lame, but I guess that's loyalists for you.
Story #2 "The Dark King" meanwhile tunes us in to what will later be the highlight of the book, mostly focussing on the Night Lords and Curze in specific. Let's just say thet Curze already murdered Astartes before the Heresy even began. Rogal Dorn and Fulgrim attempted to contain his madness, but they did not stop the man from LITERALLY BLOWING UP HIS HOMEWORLD BECAUSE HE DEEMED IT UNWORTHY. Curze at max. level insanity, so a pretty good read.
Story #3 "The Lightning Tower" meanwhile is also a lot more interesting. Also a loyalist tale, this is essentially just a conversation between Rogal Dorn and his first captain (I think). Also it directly references the first story from Dorn's perspective, which is pretty neat. Also it once again hammers home just how much Dorn hated his job for fortifying the palance.
Story #4 "The Kaban Machine" mostly is Mars being weird, and telling people the Dark Mechanicum exists? We got a confirmation that they are working on a functional AI, but that's not very shocking really. For anyone who has read "Mechanicum" it is absolute filler material.
Story #5 "Flight of the Raven" is also not very interesting - it takes place before Corvus' book and that one sorta spoils the ending. Mostly how the Raven Guard and their Primarch made it out after the Dropsite Massacre. No relevant information was gained, aside from establishing Corvus' supernatural perceptive abilities. Also pretty boring.
Story #6 "Death of a Silversmith" is also filler-material, but so, SO much better at its job. It's essentially a civillian's perspective on the whole thing, an artisan working under the Lunar Wolves right before the heresy who got murdered by a heretic and the pages are essentially his last thoughts as the life is bleeding out of him. What makes this so good is how short it is. The author had an idea, put it down, executed it well, but never overstayed his welcome. THIS is how you write filler!
But now, to the actual star of the book - not a short story, but a novella in lenght, story #6 "The Crow Prince" which was my first introduction to the Night Lords character Sevatar - who is in equal parts a new favourite of mine and also an absolute bastard. You see, he sees himself at very rational, efficient, and all that, but is also the prime exampe for "if you want to be REALLY stupid you need to be smart first, because the dumb person will never rationalize the truly stupid decisions or in fact never realize they coud make them".
The man is beyond reckless, both in combat and social situations. Also I love how he just takes absolutely no shit from his Primarch, and Curze is also delightfully insane in this story as well.
Not going to spoil much but I sure hope there will be more Sevatar in the future, mostly because I definetly want to see where this high-functioning-absolute-idiot will end up.
The next book will be Angelus Exterminatus, and I am excited for I heard a lot of good stuff about this one...

Are the RWBY Mangas Canon?
Going over stuff like the Ice Queendom Manga(2022),RWBY Anthology Manga(2017,RWBY Manga(2015) and Finally "RWBY Official Manga(2018)"
I'd say despite minor changes here and there
They are overall canon to the series
Tumblr media
"RWBY Manga(2015)"
Tumblr media
-Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross were involved with this Manga's Development
Ambiguously canon(described by Rooster Teeth as being "not non-canon" and "canon until it's not")
- Ruby's Fight with Cardin emphasizing a flashblack to Ruby's past when Yang had to protect her from the Grimm at a young age which is reflected by Volume 2 Chapter 6 Burning Candle
Yang: (off-screen, while her younger self looks petrified) "There we were: A toddler sleeping in the back of a wagon and a stupid girl too exhausted to even cry for help. We might as well have been served on a silver platter. But, as luck would have it, our uncle showed up just in time".
As the Beowolves leap into the air to devour their young prey, the familiar sound of a gun-scythe follows the sight of them all being cut into pieces by a caped warrior. His bird-haired silhouette fades away to present day, where Yang has just finished drawing a clockwork eye.
-Chapter 3 has Weiss fighting the Arma Gigas and claiming that her father only got her into Beacon due to her proving her capabilities
-Chapter 4 Jacques is confirmed to have faced threats of white fang terrorist activities
☆Weiss highlights this notably in Vol 1 Chapter 15
-Chapter 5 highlights the Black Trailer with Blake and Adam going their separate ways
Chapter 6 has the team being visibly aware of Blake's Ears making this take place at the end of Volume 1 to the start of Volume 2
Chapter 7-8 had Yang's Fight with Junior like the Yellow Trailer
Chapter 10 provided more Blake and Ruby bonding moments like
☆Blake encouraging Ruby's interest in Weapons during their fight against the Eight Headed Grimm Snake
Rwby "Official Manga"
(2018)
Tumblr media
- Glinda saving Ruby during her encounter with Roman & Cinder
Just like in V1 Chapter 1 "Ruby Rose"
- Chapter 4-5 Team Rwby & JNPR worked together against the Grimm Bird like the Chess and pieces episode
- Chapter 6 Encountered Sun Wukong in the same way as like in "The Stray"
Rwby IQ Manga(2022-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- ^ Chapter 1 gives insight of the Creation of Crescent Rose prior the beginning of the series alluding to Volume 1 Chapter 3 "The Shining Beacon"
Ruby: (giggling)"Well, I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons, sooo... I guess I did go a little overboard when designing it".
- Ozpin's Mention of Ruby's silver eyes as well as expanding on that scene
How there were Silver Eyed Warriors in the past who have been legends and expressing a similar line in Canon that Strength alone doesn't guarantee Victory
- Expanding on Yang & Ruby's Home life with Taiyang as well as Tai & Oz having some sort of history together[Alluding to his time as Team STRQ]
-the Appearance of Zwei,Ruby's dog, lives with them at home
Reference to Volume 2 Chapter 5 Field Trip
Yang: I don't know yet. Dad sent it to us. I thought we could open it together!
Ruby: Ooooh! Something from home!
Ruby zooms over to Yang and wraps herself around Yang, trying to take the cylinder from her. The package opens, and another cylinder, hairy and black, falls out onto the floor and starts to shake. The object suddenly transforms into a corgi. Team RWBY leans in, staring at it.
The animal barks twice. While Weiss and Blake continue to react with great shock, Ruby and Yang react excitedly, with Ruby jumping in the air. Ruby, still airborne, is depicted among a changing blue background and four shots of the dog, two full body shots and two headshots. She then poses as she shouts the dog's name.
Ruby: Zwei!
Blake: He sent a dog?
Weiss: In the mail?
- Chapter 2 has Weiss fighting the Arma Gigas just as she's done in the White Trailer and within the Icequeendom anime
-Adds onto Weiss's Rocky relationship with Whitley [Whitley making fun of her for failing to live up to expectations during her Arma Gigas]
-Weiss's/Ruby's argument are more or less the same
-chapter 3 has Weiss doubt Ruby's leadership skills like in the OG & IQ series
Rwby Anthology (2017)
Tumblr media
stated, by Kerry and Gray, to be "very much in tune with the show" and that "very minimal feedback had to be given on canon stuff".(26:15)
As well as side stories they didn't have time to put into the show
Red like Roses: Volume 1
-in the "partner" side story,Roman was taken into custody and RWBY & Co are at the school dance
☆Referencing the Episode "Dance Dance Infiltration"Vol 2 Chapter 7
In the "Just trying to help" side story, Weiss confirms that Ruby and Cardin has fought before
☆ Referring to the Cardin v Ruby fight from the (2015) Manga
Mirror Mirror: Volume 2
- in "Snow White's Melancholy" & "The princess, Showcases Weiss's Neglection from childhood
- in the "Who is the Ice Queen meeting?" Side story, Weiss is shown training in secret so she wouldn't be considered a liability due to her loss against the White Fang Grunt
☆Referencing Vol 2 Chapter 11 "No Brakes"
- in the "Soft Warm Ears" side story,Weiss is still adjusting to the new change that Blake was a faunus and at the end she begins to embrace it freely (touching Blake's Ears).
☆Takes place after the events of Vol 1 Chapter 15 "The Stray"
-In "The Moon" side story, Weiss has a talk with Winter about her training and making connections
☆Referencing Vol 3 Chapter 3 "It's Brawl in the Family" & Chapter 4 "Lesson Learned"
From Shadows: Volume 3
In "the Monster" sidestory,Goes other Blake's Grim past as a white fang member with Adam remarking Faunus as Monsters
It also expands more on Ruby's & Blake's relationship
+Where Blake recalls her convo with Ruby in Vol 1 Chapter 3 and wanted to learn me about Ruby's way of thinking as she believed that just this once
A Fairytale can become reality.
In "Friend" Blake connects with a lost cat and ended up happily crying after he found his new home
+Which could parallel how Team RWBY became Blake's "new home"
In "Curosity killed the Cat" side story, Weiss mentions a train accident
☆Most likely alluding to Volume 2 "No Brakes"
In "Proof of a Black Cat", Yang provides Blake a way to open up more leading to Blake to be a bit less pessimistic and welcoming her as a teammate [Seemingly after Burning Candle]
I Burn:Volume 4
In "You can't have that bear", Yang battles and is fully aware of Melanie & Miltia
☆The Twin sisters she fought against in Junior's Bar during the Yellow trailer
In "Semblance Challenge" Ruby points out that Yang destroyed Roman's Paladin
☆ Notably referenced from Vol 2 Chapter 4 Painting the Town
In"The Reader" side story, it plays on Yang's perspective as a child dealing with her harsh reality of responsibility after summer never came back.

Debut creator Austin Paramore and artist Sarah Bollinger strike a chord in this humorous and heartfelt story about love, loss, legacy, and the music that ties them all together. What does the perfect song sound like? Normally, Malcolm Kid wouldn't give this type of question the time of day. As a straight-B student with a heart of copper, he is far more concerned with overcoming mediocrity than he is with achieving perfection. Mr. Piggy
Howdy!
Pretty brief one this week. You may've seen that Feb 1 was Hourly Comics Day. This is an annual event where people make a comic every hour. Lots of them are super short--a panel or two--and often biographical. I participated and what I've wrought can only be described as Mr. Piggy.
Apologies to Alec "Mr. Boop" Robbins, Jim Henson, and Lizzo. Know that the recommended soundtrack is a canned laugh track repeating at a regular interval that cannot distinguish from the comedy and the drama.

If anyone has a good recommendation for a therapist in the San Diego area that takes Anthem, my inbox is open! I know hard it can be to be kind to yourself, to treat yourself well, to do things you need to to not have bad brain days and find balance in your emotions when things are, genuinely, very bad in the world. But it's worth it to try.
Thanks! David
P.S. A funny little work story from this week. I was emailing with a creator who works under a pseudonym, and they mentioned that in reference to how their paperwork would have a different name. I'm looking at it and I'm like "Whoa, no wonder. It must be really hard being named Wells Fargo." I was, of course, looking at their bank information and am dumb.
What I enjoyed this week: Blank Check (Podcast), Honkai Impact (Video game), House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (Book), Persona 4 Golden (Video game), Poker Face (TV show), our new mattress, receiving mail, Dungeons & Daddies (Podcast), Barry (TV show), Genshin Impact (Manga--I finally went and caught up on that from a couple of years ago), other people's Hourly Comics.
New Releases this week (2/1/2022): Off week for my books!
New releases next week (2/8/2022): Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - All Hail the King #5 (Editor) Sonic the Hedgehog #57 (Editor) Sonic the Hedgehog, Vol. 13: Battle for the Empire (Editor, collecting Sonic #50, 51, the 2022 Annual, and I think the 2022 Free Comic Book Day short?)
Final Order Cutoff (2/6/2023): Sonic the Hedgehog: The IDW Collection, Vol. 3 (Editor, collecting Sonic #21-32 and the 2020 Annual)
Announcements: Arizona Comic Book Arts Festival - 2/25! Just a couple more weeks! They've got a heckuva guest list including me, Becca, Elizabeth Brei, Danny Djeljosevic, Mitch Gerads, Steve Rude, John Layman, Henry Barajas, Jay Fotos, Jeff Mariotte, Marcy Rockwell, John Yurcaba, Andrew MacLean, Alexis Zirrit, Meredith McClaren, James Owen, Ryan Cody, and many more! Come and see us! Becca'll have some very cool new merch, too! And tickets are only $10!
Speaking of Becca, did you know they have a Patreon? They're doing weekly drawing prompts that're uploading Sundays, so lots of new stuff up there as well as a pretty impressive backcatalog from the past few years. This month, if you sign-up at any level, your support's actually going to a really amazing local organization, The Brown Building.
And final Becca news, they contributed to Aradia Beat, a Magical Girl Anthology Magazine! It's now on Kickstarter! It's both a tribute to 90s magical girl stories and part of a larger project about the overall preservation and mutual support of magical girl stories! There're two weeks left to back, so throw some money their way to make this happen and tell your friends!

2022 comics reading log
In the early days of last year, I was inspired by some twitter mutuals to post my comics reading in the new year and kept it up from Jan 1 2022 till just about the bitter end. Something about it really helped keep me invigorated by the medium even in some pretty bleak times, so I’m going to keep it going this year, but here at Longboxd instead of on twitter, which I'm trying to spend less time at. Before I can do that though, I want to archive the 2022 entries in a spot that’s more permanent/less twitter-iffic, so here we go—pretty much every comic I read in 2022! (As transcribed from here)
Part 1: 1-21 (of 387)
(I can "only" post 30 images at a time here, so that’ll dictate the length of these catch-up posts)
1) Timeless #1 - I mean, Lol at that final page reveal but this was a fun comic. I like Kang stories and this is good Kang.
2)  Service Industry by T Edward Bak
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) Human Target #2
4) Grrrl Scouts Stone Ghost #1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5) Krania #1 by Brian McCray - “I will unmake you” - I sorta wish this was hornier?
6) God Bless The Machine by Connor McCann - A messy dystopian exploration of tech and social media etc that trucks along efficiently, wraps up nicely. Definitely some JTHM energy in the drawings that is chunkily satisfying.
7) Reckless: Friend Of The Devil - A fun read, but didn’t work for me as well as the first. Less "badass/men’s adventure magazine moments"  than in vol one, maybe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8) Cult Of The Ibis by Daria Tessler - Like Tove Jansson designed the "oh fuck I’m losing it" nightlife montage from your favorite noir movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9) Firepower #18
10) Future State: Gotham #7
11) Future State: Gotham #8
Tumblr media
12) Rust Belt Review #3 - Very solid anthology that seems firmly targeted at the more "literary" side of alt-comics (though of course there are some rowdy exceptions). 2-3 cartoonists clearly influenced by Sammy H, lots of humanity in the stories.
13) Tuki vol 1 - It's nice to have a new Jeff Smith comic to enjoy—he's great at this (this being funny/intense/heartfelt adventure comics), it's easy to sorta forget just *how good* until a new book comes out. Glad it's in B/W too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
14) Crisis #53 - The late 80s/early 90s was the best time for big format anthology magazines, great for just flipping through. Random issue of CRISIS has Sean Phillips doing his best McKean/Fregredo, & Steve Whittaker’s colors(!) on these Munoz SINNER pages are interesting (but print muddy).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
15) Crisis #54 - This one has a Paul Grist/Mark Millar prison comic.
16) Avengers #98 - They don’t make ‘em like they used to (kind of bad, chaotic, and hard to read)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
17) Nightwing: Leaping into the light TPB
18) X-Men #6
19) Human Target #3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
20) Boy Maximortal #3 by Rick Veitch - Veitch found a new life in POD publishing in a way that feels like it’s a spiritual sibling to those Ditko/Snyder joints, & we are richer for it. These are uncut Metaphysical Boomer Cape Comics & I love them unreservedly (also the indicia warmed this slow cartoonist’s heart)
Tumblr media
21) Ninja Funnies #1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be continued!

My Top Posts in 2022:

The longer that RWBY goes on and the more side material we get for RWBY (the comics, Ice Queendom, even the non-anthology manga) it seems to be getting close to a few headcanons that I have about the Schneeblings and just how dysfunctional their relationship is.
Like, you have Ice Queendom that is definitely giving us a bit more to Weiss's thoughts on how her family is. Whitley is more of a pest that seems to be watching over her and reminding her of her failures, the duties she has, and adding fuel to the fire of making her question herself. And then there's Winter, someone Weiss has looked up to and basically has seen as a set of rules to be like. Something so close, yet so far away, and still not someone she's really close to.
Now, Ice Queendom is definitely more of an exaggeration on everything due to the grim, but its not too far away from her actual feelings for the little we've seen with her siblings. For Winter, she's distant, but still tries to get close, even if it is at an arms length. And Whitley, what more can I say than he's a 14 year old brat who torments his sister is his own ways. Usually by reminding her about her legacy or even alluding to knowing more about what's going on than he lets on.
Which... all starts to make more and more sense once you realize that Jacques has probably kept the Schneeblings away from each other in various ways. Winter, being the first heir, would've been kept away from Weiss until she decided to be a huntress. Weiss followed shortly after, but wouldn't have been long once she was deemed the heiress and brought into her own training.
Whitley is someone who was left behind and not given much of a chance to know his sisters. Winter would've been gone by the time he'd try to get close to her, and Weiss would've been pulled away for her own training to take over the company, as well as her desires to be a huntress and try to reclaim the Schnee legacy.
And Jacques would be at the center of all of them. Between pulling Winter into being an heir to the SDC, and then pushing her away when she became a huntress, his attempt to hold Weiss to him and pushing her through a brutal test to go to Beacon along with holding the SDC over her head and everything that goes with it. And for Whitley, with Willow drinking, Winter off in the military, and Weiss off at Beacon and then running away from home, Jacques was all that was left for him to turn to for anything. And as a safety mechanism of his own, Whitley started to act like how his father wanted in order to keep himself safe.
And now that Jacques is gone and Willow, Winter, Whitley, and Weiss can start their own reconciliations, it'll be interesting to see the storm that comes as they figuring out how to work through their own traumas to work together.

Hey guys, just as a reminder with RTX around the corner and RWBY Vol 9 coming:
If CRWBY is vague on the panels, there's a reason. If they're not answering with a direct yes or no answer, there's a reason. There are answers that are spoilers in either the yes or no direction which means they wont always be able to answer all the questions without being vague. So if there is no direct yes or no confirmation on a panel, then accept that the answer will be coming at some point in the show.
As a fandom, we need to accept that often the answers we want we cant always have immediately and CRWBY is very good at answering questions when they can or giving us the answer in the show. That goes for any relationship questions or anything about the direction of the volume they havent already told us.

The more I think about Cinder, the more I feel like she's misunderstood from a fandom and character perspective. In show, no one really knows who Cinder is.
Rhodes is probably the only one who really saw Cinder as she was for a while: a scared girl desperate for things to change. And while he was the one to first suggest she becomes a huntress, he starts losing that she's scared and feels alone and starts seeing her as someone who just needs the hope of freedom to keep going.
Salem sees her as an extension of herself, disregarding that she's a scared little girl and uses her a tool for her own needs and a key she keeps close.
Watts sees Cinder as nothing more than a failure and an annoyance, that her biggest success was still a resounding failure because she failed to retrieve the relic from Beacon due to no fault of her own.
RWBY and JNR see her as just a killer, someone who is willing to burn the world to obtain her goals.
And a good majority if the fandom see her as someone who can never change, that her failure to change her direction after her defeat at Haven and that she hasn't turned over a new leaf after Watts' vol 8 tirade, means she's doomed to be killed off.
However, what everyone doesn't seem to realize is that Cinder doesn't actually know who she is. She holds a facade of Salem and the Madame to try to emulate them for her own gain since she doesn't know better. Who she is seems to change person to person as she's promised freedom, uses her allies, tries to find a way to gain her own power. She's a mirror to all that use her, slowly breaking apart the longer she's handled and looked at, tossed away by those who no longer deem her necessary and kept close and ill-maintained by those who need her, causing herself to shatter or to be lost before she can be deemed as useless.
Which begs the question: if no one truly knows Cinder, does she know who she is? And if she doesn't, how long can she keep up the facades until her own perception of herself shatters and reveals to us and herself her true self? And when that day comes, what choice will she make to be true to herself?

Adagio “It Takes Two For A Quarrel”
SHORE OF BOSPHORUS, ISTANBUL – DUSK
LAND: The boat has to be docked on my shore all the time. If the boat leaves my hand, it ends up with being wrecked. The better part of it is on safe ground. [1]
SEA: It’s just one of the many boats, don’t be so serious. Think of what’s been achieved and what can be achieved through sailing in my infinity. It makes no sense for the boats to be docked always when its purpose is to sail around the oceans.
LAND: You are so random and unpredictable. There is always a danger of shipwrecks.I have borne Ocean’s threats, and no storm of his has availed to wreck the ship which I have weighted down. [2]
SEA: I am dangerous and unpredictable, yes, but if you are always trying to limit the boat by just keeping it on one place, is there even a reason for a boat to be a boat? Doesn’t it take away the possibility to the unknown, always in fear of what might happen? Just enjoy the limitlessness above me. A boat on land is like a ship in the sink. [3]
LAND: You said the purpose of a boat is to sail around, but it’s always on me where it has to end up with. Accordingly, the merchant embark in a ship and set sail only intending for his mother land. [4]
SEA: You may be the endpoint, but you have different endpoints all around you, how would the boat even get to your end points when it’s docked to a single point?
LAND: I have rivers and lakes where the boats can still serve their purpose. The Importance of the part played by inland water transport is well known. [5] I’ve seen so many people and ships stranded to my shores because of your deeds. I will not stand it anymore. It is only by me how the boats can come to existence from the first place, and thus I bear the responsibility to keep them in shape, in safety..
SEA: But now is no hope of safety. [6] What makes your waters less risky than me? So you are trying to claim the boat on your waters and docks, knowing that they are in the end flowing towards me. Why shouldn’t they just be free to keep sailing beyond the horizon? And isn’t it a paradox to talk about ‘waters’ in front of me?
LAND: So what do you want to say? Sailing beyond the limitless horizon for what? All journeys are roads with ends, and you are not realizing the fact you are finite. It’s a pure fantasy, a delusion
SEA: Such a road exludes every further “voyage”. [7] Someone of the land might more readily become seasick in a boat than someone associated with the sea. [8] So if they are seasick and fall overboard, I, the sea shall be their tomb. [9] Offended? [10]
LAND: Enough with your risky fantasy. I’ll teach you who’s the more righteous one for the ‘right boat’.
SEA: Try me.
The two are moving from the illusion of absolute rationality to ‘bounded rationality’ and ‘good enough reason’. [11] In the meantime, the search for a suitable boat was on. [12] Wood does not offer assistance to a boat [13] for them to really claim to whom it really belongs.

TITLE: 彼からのプレゼント  (Present From Him) AUTHOR: せっこ (Secco) FROM: Danganronpa Comic Anthology Vol. 4
hello! back to my ishimaru challenge month, terribly off schedule but what can you do about having to be a working adult. this is the last of the anthology comics that have a major focus on kiyotaka! although this comic is technically about togami, it’s more about the antics of mondo, kiyotaka, and makoto. it’s a real fun one, hope you all like it as much as i do! images are in order from left to right.
disclaimer,  i’m not fluent in japanese, nor would i call this a perfect translation,  just a rough one to get the basic understanding! mirrored this on imgur, accompanied by a more fleshed out translation (and notes) as per usual, but under the cut here, i've included brief barebones  summaries of each page.
as for usage: if you're going to  use the raws for anything, or reference the rough translation that i've  given, i'd appreciate some credit (via a reblog is fine!), or a link  back! however, such is not necessary, and otherwise, you're free to use however you wish, since the only thing i really own are these particular scans. (i’ve seen some of it popping up on instagram and! glad to know people are getting their usage out of them, god knows i don’t scan these for my sake)
1:  Starts off with Monokuma handing out the slips with everyone’s secrets on it, and telling them that he’ll expose what’s on them in 24 hours if there’s been no killing. Makoto notices that Byakuya drops something, and notes that even he seemed to have been affected by it, and picks up a note which reads that Santa does not exisst (> implying that his secret is that he believes that Santa does exist)
2: Mondo and Kiyotaka (and Toko) come across Makoto at this point, wondering what’s up with him. Makoto shows the note to the three of them, saying that Byakuya had dropped it.  Kiyotaka thinks that it’s a shock that ‘this kind of pure Togami-kun exists’. Mondo feels like they should just tell Byakuya the truth (before Monokuma reveals it), and Makoto agrees, but Kiyotaka disagrees with them.
3: The basis for Kiyotaka disagreeing is because he was moved [by the fact that kind of side to Togami exists], and wants to protect him/his beliefs. Mondo says that they should just get it over with; while Kiyotaka argues that being able to protect those dreams (of a friend) is an indication of a true man’s friendship. Which sways Mondo into agreeing and apologizing for disagreeing with him. Kiyotaka says that they should protect Byakuya together [the three of them], which gets them looking for him.
4: When they find Byakuya, they find him in the laundry, hanging up his socks. Which leads Mondo and Kiyotaka to conclude that he must be waiting [on a gift] from Santa, while Makoto tries to point out that he’s just hanging up his laundry to dry. Kiyotaka wants to put a [noodle] soup in his sock [as a gift], to which Makoto protests on the basis that Byakuya will get angry. Mondo doubles down by asking Makoto if he has anything, which he only has cup noodles. Kiyotaka says he’ll do it once Byakuya leaves, Makoto once again protesting, and Mondo in agreement by saying he’ll get hot water [to cook the noodles].
5: Admist this, they notice Byakuya and Asahina talking. Byakuya gives her a knife and tells her to put it back in the kitchen; when Asahina asks if he used it, he informs her that Monokuma left it in his room, and he obviously wouldn’t use it (as a weapon). Kiyotaka concludes that Monokuma did it to undermine his trust [in Santa], and Makoto thinks that Monokuma must be up to something (since he’s expecting one of them to kill). They notice a somewhat muffled sound and inspect the source, wondering what Monokuma’s doing.
6: Lots of yelling. Mondo asks why Monokuma’s being a nuisance, while Monokuma essentially asks why he’s upset [when it’s not the real thing/not a real person]. Kiyotaka exclaims that they won’t allow him to mess [with Santa], while all the noise has finally gotten Byakuya’s attention.
7: All three of them are surprised by Byakuya’s sudden apperance; with Kiyotaka calling him an idiot, and Mondo shouting at him to not look [at what they have]. This confuses Byakuya, and Monokuma decides it’s the perfect time to announce.... that Byakuya doesn’t actually believe in Santa, he just prepared the note and dropped it for Makoto to find it, and laughs at the misunderstanding.
8:  Mondo and Kiyotaka are unhappy with Makoto, and Makoto tries to deflect by saying they got excited on their own, offhandedly mentioning the socks. Which leads Byakuya to realize that under the impression that he believed in Santa, they left a gift for him [to pretend to be Santa], and “in other words, the culprit of this[his socks] is you.” Monokuma is pleased by how things turned out, while Byakuya’s telling Makoto to wash them and him agreeing to it.

Twilight Zone for manga fans
“You're travelling to another medium. A medium not only of sight, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose conception is possible through imagination. You've just crossed over... into the Manga Zone.”
Now I’m a big fan of the Twilight Zone and anime/manga, so at some point I wondered if there’s any weeb stuff like Twilight Zone. After being completely disappointed with the anime The Laughing Salesman and Twilight Q, I looked further, and found 4 manga. Everyone, presented for your perusal, 4 horror anthology manga hostesses: Misery (the Outer Zone), Yomi (Zekkyou Gakkyuu [Ja: 絶叫学級, “Screaming Lesson”]), Kaminuma from the Soumatoh Kabushikigaisha [走馬灯株式会社, “Revolving Lantern Corporation”], and Misa from Eko Eko Azarak. Below are my thoughts so far on these series, in the order that I enjoy them, from best to least good.
1. The Outer Zone
Tumblr media
“Hello, everyone. I’m Misery, your guide through the Outer Zone.” - Misery
The Outer Zone is probably the closest out of the 4 manga to the Twilight Zone and it seriously excels at itself. Every chapter is its own story where we meet a character or two and we witness them as they encounter whatever strange happening the Outer Zone presents them with, ending each story with a twist and a moral lesson/message. Like the Twilight Zone, each story is bookended also with an opening and closing narration from Misery herself.
For fans of TZ and anime/manga, I think this is a must read. Now unlike TZ, Misery tends to insert herself as part of the story. At first I thought this was something the author had done to shy away from making it a fully anthology series, but as the series goes, I find that the insertion of Misery is actually a good one for some stories. There is quite a noticeable dip in quality in volumes 3 and 4, but it managed to pick itself back up in vol 5. Misery is sorta an omnipotent-ish deity who “takes an interest in the dark side of life” and isn’t evil. If anything, she presents opportunities for the good to pull themselves out of the trouble and opportunities for the bad to be punished, much like how fate leads the characters in TZ. One of my favourite chapters is the one where a couple comes across a lucky shrunken head that porports to be able to predict what to bet on, potentially allowing the owner to win and endless amount of money. But is there really no catch to this?
2. Zekkyou Gakkyuu [絶叫学級]
Tumblr media
"Good evening. It is time for yet another Screaming Lesson.” - Yomi
I first watched Twilight Zone as a kid, and I was certainly not old enough to really understand the themes about the US-Soviet arms race and other topics like this that were contemporary issues in the 1960s when TZ aired (I’m not even American or Russian). Also, generally, TZ is really an adult show, dealing with primarily problems concerning adults, with themes such as gambling, working, nostalgia, etc. Perhaps for that reason, I dropped the Twilight Zone for a good number of years before returning to it as an adult. Personally I was more intrigued by stories about a child who kept telling lies and finding out his lies came true, and my teachers in middle school really dug a TZ-esque story I wrote about helping a granny across the road, even though I didn’t really think that story was special at all.
This brings me to the point: I wish that there was Twilight Zone, but for a younger audience. And Zekkyou Gakkyuu is exactly that. It deals with situations that are perhaps more at home if you’re still a student, and most characters go to school. Now reading this as an adult, the final messages may make you feel like you aren’t part of the targeted demographic, with final messages like “remember to treat your friends well” and “don’t be picky with food”. But hear me out, despite the messages that are aimed at a younger audience, the stories themselves are actually very solid and compelling even reading it as an adult, so besides the final message in the end, there doesn’t seem to be compromises in the story department, so I would definitely say even as an adult, this is worth checking out. After all, even the classic TZ episode “To Serve Man” is basically like a sci-fi version of Little Red Riding Hood in any case. It’s the same message you might tell children, but the story is an enjoyable one. Like Outer Zone, each chapter begins and ends with a narration from the ghost girl host herself. And while we’re at that, I certainly am a fan of the design of the host character, who’s a ghost with only her torso...
3. Soumatoh Kabushikigaisha [走馬灯株式会社]
Tumblr media
“Welcome to the Revolving Lantern Corporation. Look back on your life to your heart’s content!” - Kaminuma
Right off the bat, I should probably warn you that this is definitely an adult, 18+ manga.
Soumatoh (or “Soumatou”) Kabushikigaisha is said to be based on one specific Twilight Zone episode (which I have not yet watched) called “What’s in the box”, where a man finds a TV that could predict his future.
The SK is a kind of supernatural company that offers a service of allowing you to watch back on someone’s life if you provide the company with that person’s name and details. And you watch their life on a set of DVDs. Clumsy for a supernatural power, but it does come into play into the plot sometimes.
Anyway, I’m actually surprised how much they were able to milk this simple concept (and I mean this in the good way). At first, I wasn’t terribly fond of this premise, because you know the current state of the individuals, so I figured there couldn’t be anything too shocking going on, but it proves me wrong time and again. The twists usually come when you peek into the life of someone close to you and how they experience the same events. So despite the predictable setting, it still manages to deliver a TZ experience, though I would say it does so in a weaker manner than say, the Outer Zone, and there tends not to be anything supernatural going on in SK.
A word of warning if you decide to pick this up. There’s basically a sex scene in every story (each story usually spans 2 chapters), but it’s not hentai. It often feels that it contributes to the plot point, but there is quite the abundance of it, so just be warned.
4. Eko Eko Azarak
Tumblr media
“Eko, eko, azarak. Eko, eko, zomelak.” - Misa
Eko Eko Azarak is a line from a Wiccan chant, and this manga deals with a little witch who practices black magic and goes around different schools to “serve justice”, as the manga summary puts it.
Like Zekkyou Gakkyuu, this takes place in a school setting, so some of the issues addressed feel more at home if you’re in that age range, such as wanting to get good grades and school gangs.
Now while I did find the first chapter to be a very worthy TZ-for-teens episode, I wasn’t quite as thrilled with chapters 2 and 3, and for that reason, I’ve decided to put this manga on hold for a bit. The reason? Our protagonist Misa isn’t really what I’d call a good person, and the punishments the MCs of each story (I’m distinguishing here the protagonist Misa from the MC of each story) receive don’t really feel deserved. These are in stark contrast to Misery, who tends to punish the bad. Now don’t get me wrong, TZ has its fair share of episodes where even the good get into a terrible fate, and not always as a warning either (in Time Enough at Last, I don’t think Henry Bemis has really done anything to deserve his fate, and unlike To Serve Man, it doesn’t serve [pun not intended] to warn us about trusting strangers). But I think if you’re going to put “people suffering from terrible fates without good reason” stories in, I don’t think these should be the manga starter. Many times, Misa seems to tempt the MC without good reason or just outright messes with them (this is also one of my complaints for the Laughing Salesman). Overall, with Misa not really being a good person and the undeserved punishments, this manga sits at the bottom of my list. But I still think it is nice in that it’s TZ for school-goers, and I have hope that people will face karma for bad deeds they’ve done further into the chapters.
Closing narration
Overall, I’m happy that there are a handful of enjoyable manga based off of the Twilight Zone. OZ is definitely the strongest in my opinion, and ZG and SK are also good reads. They deliver the suspense, the twist ending, and the lesson (though perhaps less so in SK). I hope you could give the first 3 a read too, and if there’s any anime/manga that give TZ vibes, please do let me know, and I’d be happy to check them out! (And I don’t just mean episodic manga, I do mean the whole TZ package as I described). I’m also doing a little Touhou/Twilight Zone crossover Youtube series, and I hope you could also check it out if you like this sorta thing. Regardless, just don’t get too engrossed into the books... or you may find yourself sucked into, with no way out... of the Manga Zone.
