fanfic friday: aftg edition
Deadly Affections by NikNak22
Summary:
Neil Josten is not soft- has never been in fact. But when an unintended comment from one of the Foxes throws Neil for a loop, he finds himself reminding them why no one should think of him in that way. But why is Andrew suddenly so distant? And what happens when all of these reminders of his past start to catch up with him?
Aka: all the times Neil proved he was a badass, and Andrew reminds him he's an idiot.

Words: 12,287
Chapters: 1/1
this was genuinely a work of art. i generally love fluff/soft shit but this. this fundamentally rewired my brain oh my fucking god. it was the perfect balance of angst (neil reverting back to nathaniel??!!!) but also comfort <3 and also neil being a badass may be the sexiest thing in the world (perhaps even more so than kevin switching his racket hand 👀 which i didn't think was possible). plus i dont necessarily like it when neil is treated as incompetent (he is literally so talented! however he chose to ignore all of that in exchange for exy) so really this fic is perfect. plus it felt very canon andreil, and basically very in-character in general. overall 11/10
the author has written a whole bunch of aftg fics (which im gonna go read right now) so pls check them out! idk their tumblr but if someone finds it lmk

OKAY time to share my two cents that nobody asked for on this scenario. yeah, I'm disappointed. ngl this is casting a pall over my replay of the series and general enthusiasm (which sucks but I know I'll bounce back very quickly, it'll take FARRR more than something like this to kill it). regardless of the impact of our choices or lack thereof, I have faith that veilguard will be a great game because I haven't been let down by a dragon age game yet. the concept of worldstates is a HUGE reason why this series is special to me, but it's not the only reason.
that being said, yeah, it's pretty fucking weird to have so... few... choices represented in the CC. especially if you think about how impactful everything that is NOT being represented is. so many things stop making sense.
we saw our choices mattering less as we moved from DA2 -> DA:I, but nothing of this caliber. its.... idk. idk what else to call it beyond weird and disappointing
we still can't say anything is for certain until we play through the entirety of veilguard itself but I'm definitely much more wary than I was before

Helloooo farmer friends!! So last night my friend @pavusprince mentioned how she doesn’t understand the toothpaste mint chocolate chip ice cream comparison and that got me thinking!! Let’s talk about food!!
Does your farmer like mint chocolate ice cream? Does it taste like toothpaste? Are they neutral, or do they hate it?
During the summer does your farmer visit Alex’s ice cream stand? What flavor/treat do they buy? What’s their least favorite flavor?
What is one treat your farmer will ALWAYS have in their home? Is it healthy or unhealthy?
If your farmer was a snack item what would they be? (It cannot be a food that could be eaten like a meal, but it may be a dessert) Here’s some examples: chips, cookies, M&ms, Twinkies, crackers, bubblegum, lollipops, etc
What’s your farmer’s comfort food, favorite meal, and least favorite meal?
What’s something they will NEVER eat?
What do they cook if they know they will have a guest over?
If the town’s potluck didn’t matter so much, what ingredient would they take? And what food would they put at an event table if you had to bring something?
Finally, if your farmer was real, what would YOU give them to eat.

It's been a rough day today so here's some comfort headcanons
Rus tries to distract himself. Preferably with company if it's an option, but he'll also manage on his own. He’ll do puzzles, sort/clean things in his room, customize some clothes, just...anything to take his mind off things for a while. If it's really rough though, he might just crawl into his closet and sit there disassociating for a while. Sometimes, coming out of being so stressed, he'll draw or paint something for a little while. Helps him reorient a little.
For a while, Edge would only distract himself. There's not time for comfort in a world like theirs. This would lend to overworking frequently, or on the rare occasions he pushed himself too hard, a very bad panic attack where he'd do his best to hide (usually in his closet) and make as little noise as possible. Once surfaced though, he takes a lot of comfort in making things with his hands. Either crocheting, cooking or baking, or painting. Though he'd rather be alone when calming down.
Stretch runs hot and cold on company for comfort. Sometimes he needs it, will go anywhere he isn't alone so he can't hear himself think, but sometimes he absolutely doesn't want to be near anyone. Those times, he mostly just distracts himself with video games or wallowing in bed dipping in and out of consciousness. He doesn't have as much available energy as the other two, so if he’s already feeling a bit beat, picking up his hobbies tends to just make him feel worse, so mostly, he just tries to nap and...not think about it.

Something someone could do to help comfort Rus would be to distract him. Hang out with him, do or talk about things unrelated to what's upset him. Giving him that space to not talk or think about it while still feeling supported would help a lot.
As for Edge, while he generally prefers being alone, if he’s not too worked up, quiet 'parallel play' might help. Just hearing someone nearby, doing their own thing, especially if they'd be willing to play taste tester if he’s cooking or baking, it helps bring him out of his own head sooner, and...well, it's good to be reminded he doesn't have to handle everything on his own anymore.
Honestly, Stretch being mildly bullied into doing something mild, if he’s not too down, could help him a lot. Especially getting him to leave his bedroom, even if he doesn't go much further than just the living room. A movie, snacks, and low energy company could usually do him a world of good (and someone who doesn't make him feel like he should be ashamed for feeling bad).
