please read this community cookbook compiled by my city’s art gallery as part of a recent installation on cultural foodways, it’s a glorious example of the particular cross-section of the sublime and the completely insane that has always made me love these kinds of cookbooks
my favourite parts:
the dude who unironically claims a vegetarian restaurant in Toronto was the first time tofu was the star of a dish
the photos of hand-written recipies passed down through families
the teenager who appointed themself the creator of the ‘official’ cookie of my old high school
the family secrets getting revealed
the batshit person who microwaves orange juice concentrate with ginger

National Clean Your Home Month Day 13
I woke up very grumpy and low energy this morning thanks to overheating because I'd put my normal amount of blankets on, anticipating that the outdoor temperature would drop to near freezing like it usually does, but instead it warmed up overnight to 50°F. While overheating, I had this weird dream about seeing Chris Colfer at a tour appearance with @spaceorphan18. It wasn't a book tour, it was him going around the country talking about how making Glee was the worst 3 years of his life. (Yes I know, but in the dream it was 3 years.) Also he still looked 23.
I had more coffee than usual, did a shorter swim than usual, and then managed to do maintenance chores and tick some things off my list.
- in addition to washing my swimsuit, I used the rest of the vinegar solution left over from yesterday for soaking a shirt that had deodorant stains. The shirt's not dry yet, but from the preliminary inspection, it looks like the soak worked!
- called the bank to deal with the credit card issue I discovered yesterday, they said they would fix it and I shouldn't be charged for late payment
- Ticked off a whole bunch of financial related chores from my list. Ugh. But they're done. And I listened to my iTunes on shuffle while I did it. Top sing-along moments were Barbra Streisand singing "Where Is It Written?", "Steven's Last Night In Town" from Ben Folds Five and "I Want A Monster To Be My Friend" from Sesame Street.
- folded towels that were washed yesterday while watching "American Commune," a documentary about The Farm commune. I was super excited to find this documentary yesterday since I've had my copy of The New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook since I was a teenager and have never stopped using it. Some kids who were raised on The Farm talked about how they ate soybeans constantly, and this will not surprise you if you have read the cookbook.
- made tofu and nutritional yeast "cheese" sauce for lunch and ate it with homemade crackers. I promise, I had actually planned that for lunch even before watching "American Commune", but having watched it, the lunch seemed especially appropriate.
- put away the towels
- took a picture of some of the wool dryer balls I've made in hopes that people on Tumblr will want some because this is really too much for one household:
Tumblr media
They're made of clean wool straps from old wool socks, sweaters, etc. Let me know if you want a set! I can't guarantee particular colors, but you can let me know your preferences. We use three in our dryer. No charge for the balls and no charge for shipping in the US; if you want to pay something, I would gladly accept Tumblr rainbow checkmarks or other badges I don't have yet.

Alright, I heard today's episode with so much more food and I know my niche in fandom is the creation of spreadsheets. So, in case this would help anyone else, here is a spot to collect all the food descriptions given in Worlds Beyond Number and then links to fan's recipes.
It's open to anyone to edit. But if it escapes containment I'll limit it and then you can message me here for editing permissions.
I look forward to seeing what we all create!

When I told my brother my new name, he said, 'Pretty much all the Noahs I know wear beanies, so it fits.'
And it makes me wonder if there's some truth to it. I've come to learn that Noah is a pretty common trans male name, and wearing my beanie gives me a weird sense of euphoria. This is the time of year when I feel most myself, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, even if it can sometimes feel like it.

Just read the anarchist cookbook, should I commit treason?
Treason? How?
If you want to start a prolonged people's war against the Imperial state I'm all there with you. But we need organization, numbers, and a clear strategy with goals and the ability to carry out the tactics necessary to achieve those goals. All of which we're currently lacking, fundamentally.
I'd instead recommend joining your local revolutionary Socialist organization, a trade union if possible, and if none are available to you, I'd recommend starting your own chapter.
Get the numbers, organization, and some substantial group of passionate anti-Imperialists together and THEN start hitting the system.
And even then, violence shouldn't be arbitrary or used unnecessarily. That doesn't win hearts and minds. Instead, I would think along the lines of a war of attrition against the state. Constant and consistent attacks on public and private infrastructure used daily for commerce and such acts of sabotage could be used to great effect in a long, drawn out People's war. Wear the system down, hit them where it hurts, and then reap the gains in the ensuing chaos.

Okay okay okay. I'm enough of a nerd that yes I own those damned Disney Star Wars themepark cookbooks, and I've been steadily working my way through most of the recipes in them.
Mostly the recipes are a great balance of fun, interesting, and vaguely deliberately shifted around a really solid base to make it just a little unfamiliar so it's 'space' themed. But actually something you'd be willing to cook, without a million and a half rather finnicky steps and a ton of things to wash up before the thing even meets heat.
(With one or two minor SNAFUs caused by ye olde separated by a common language - tomato paste vs tomato puree woops)
But ahem, anyway that 'spicy' Mandalorian stew, ey?
For all of the advertised heat in the thing... You essentially end up with a rather tasty Japanese style curry with couscous in it, rather than rice on the side.
Nice? Yes.
Spicy? No not really. Even compared to other similarly mild curries, and taking spicy to mean spiced not hot. The Japanese style curry this recipe seems to be based around somewhat infamously comes from the bland for the UK-palette generic curry powder of the Victorians...
Sooo. I am spitefully choosing to follow a large chunk of fandom's example and picking bits of Star Wars at random to pick and choose my canon from... I'm now taking that recipe as 'proof' that Mandalorian cooking... really isn't all that hot.
And yes, I made that Pog soup too. Tasty? Yeah sure. Spicy? ...Eh?
And again, spitefully logicking my way through, which culture is always depicted in the films as actually extremely multicultural, and actually allows its members to retain their home traditions from their roots, and actually is based loosely around Asia rather than the old colonising empire building bounty hunters and rogues mashed with Knights Templar thing that is still the bulk of what the Mandos have?
The Jedi.
Who, notably, are absolutely missing any representation whatsoever in either of the two Disney-era Star Wars cookbooks. Since the setting is post the second Jedi genocide in the Skywalker Saga...
So whilst I'm now headcanoning, Mando food as all bark and very little bite, spitefully and based solely off of a very dubious bit of 'canon'.
I can also with impunity go, Sichuan cooking for the Jedi? Yes. Yes. Yes. Genuinely interesting Indian cuisine? Sure why not? Spicy Uzbek style stews? Great! Shakshouka as fiery as you can get it for breakfast? Amazing! Enough spicy kefta to feed fifty ravenous knights? Fabulous!
There's a brisk, and expensive given they're just cheap space-ramen, trade in the Jedi Temple sector of Coruscant of all the numerous flavours of Space-Buldak Chilli Noodles, since the Padawans basically live off of them.
Swimming in chilli already? Well that's not hot enough for old Master Rancisis! Add more! And don't forget the numbing peppercorns, that's Master Sifo-Dyas's favourite part!
Cue a fanfic, with the usual increasingly irritating set-up. Ahahaha, lets laugh at the culture that supposedly eats nothing but the blandest thing on the menu encounter the Manly Men we only eat the Hottest Vindaloo because we're hard! culture... And... Nope, nosiree the Mandos cannot handle it at all, cue much blue milk chugging, and not from the jedi half of the contingent. Despite all their showboating about how spicy they love their spicy spicy stew, they're like the old stereotype about white Brits in an Indian Curry House in Goodness Gracious Me.
(Seriously still far too spitefully amused that the official 'Spicy Mandalorian Stew' recipe produced bland but tasty comfort food in reality.)

Recipe #2 - Chicken & Rice
Ingredients
2 boneless thighs
Chicken brine of your choice
Butter and/or olive oil for frying
2 yellow onions
2 tomatoes (I prefer on the vine)
2 cups basmati rice
3 cups chicken broth
Recipe:
Prepare chicken thighs by brining. I typically use a salt and lemon juice brine with a few herbs, but any simple recipe will do.
Wash basmati rice until the water runs clear
Soak rice in COLD water for 30 minutes, then strain
Thinly slice onions for frying
Mince garlic cloves
Dice tomatoes into small cubes
Melt butter or oil in a LARGE based pot, add salt on medium low heat. Add more butter/oil as you add more ingredients as desired
Add onions and cook them until just browned
In a separate smaller pan, cook chicken thighs until golden on both sides and have reached an internal temp of 165°F/74°C
Cut chicken into small cubes and save for later
Add tomatoes, and sprinkle with salt. The salt in this step is essential
Cook until the tomato-onion-butter mixture is less pink and more orange
Add minced garlic until it becomes fragrant, don't do this for more than 2 minutes or the garlic will burn!
Add the chicken back in and stir until covered in the mixture
Add in the rice at this point with some more butter, and quickly stir it in and cover it in the butter and ingredients
Add in chicken broth and cover until rice has absorbed all liquid. If needed, add a few more tablespoons of chicken broth if the rice has absorbed all liquid but is not fully cooked. Generally though, basmati rice is best cooked with a 1:1.5 rice to water ratio.
Serve.

I’d like to attempt at writing a 4th(??) Chapter of my So’lek series this week, and try to find another recipe in my avatar cookbook. I’ll do another poll. There’s 3 sections of clans. And then sub sections I can talk about another time. But for now:

"Today is a day spent looking back, remembering and reflecting.
I just found this picture of us all, on the day our cookbook came out. The Duchess had wrapped a book for each one of us and wrote a lovely message to each lady on the first page. Always very thoughtful, today we received a lovely voice message from the Duchess, being the 5 years anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, asking how we are, about our children and families and giving us news of hers. Just being her beautiful kind self."
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tragedy, and the Hubb Community Kitchen shared this post on Facebook.
