The Journey of Clone Force 99 (and Friends)

a fun little research project i've been working on -- mapping out the locations visited by [members of] Clone Force 99, as seen on-screen in their Clone Wars Season 7 arc and The Bad Batch show itself. i really wanted to see where these locations were in relation to each other in the big, wide, Star Wars galaxy.

Note #1: Any planet names on the map that I had to add/type in myself are locations that I had to approximate, based on their Wookiepedia entries. They're not 100% accurate but I feel they're pretty darn close!

Note #2: This is NOT the complete map of all locations visited -- there were about 10 places that had planet or moon names in Wookiepedia, but no information on their location within the galaxy, not even a sector name.

Note #3: the pink-purple "misc" locations are ones that were either A) visited by non-CF99 characters, and/or B) mentioned or shown on-screen but no one really 'went' to the planet. They're all mentioned in the big list at the end of these notes.

used the links here to access the sector maps for the Outer and Mid Rims. it's an older but legitimate Star Wars source, from a book published in 2009, but I believe it has remained accurate and carried over into the Disney Canon. I used this a lot for the locations that weren't on the primary map -- Wookiepedia gave me the planet's sector name, and I was able to find the sector using these maps.

this map is fan-made and can be zoomed into very closely to see a lot more locations. There are also faint outlines for the sectors. I don't think this map itself is 100% accurate either, but it was still very helpful in confirming some locations I was approximating.

Fun things I noticed:

with it's "cameo" / intro appearance at the very end of Season 1, Wayland/Tantiss is the only location that we see in all three TBB seasons.

(unless there was a Coruscant scene i'm forgetting from S1??? that would be the other most likely candidate. but I think we only visit Coruscant in S2 and S3.)

(Ord Mantell came kinda close, with an indirect reference in S3, re: the imperials finding and questioning Cid.)

My actual canonical interpretation of SatoSugu?

I believe they were the bestest of friends, inseparable soul mates who were mutually in love with each other, but never confessed the depth of their feelings, never discussed their relationship, and never actually made anything out of it.

I believe that Suguru had a massive crush on Satoru throughout their high school years. Satoru was more dense on the other hand and did love Suguru but didn’t know how to place his feelings exactly. Suguru was always by his side and that was enough, he felt secure, so why look into it deeper?

After the trauma from the Star Plasma Vessel mission, Suguru was heartbroken that Satoru left him alone a lot. He missed Satoru and spiraled, self-isolated, started becoming obsessed with his own self-talk about ‘monkeys’ and ‘creating a new world with sorcerers only’. He and Satoru both became self-absorbed. Suguru lost that crush and admiration he had for Satoru even though he still loved him. He wanted his own goals more. So he left.

The second he left, I bet that’s when Satoru realized what Suguru meant to him. That’s probably one of the reasons that Satoru is stuck in the past, because he finally placed his feelings for Suguru, realized he was in love with him, and kept replaying those moments they had together, realizing he never noticed Suguru sending signals, mad at himself for never noticing. He regretted it so badly that he just couldn’t stop living in the past with Suguru. If he’d just paid attention, if he noticed Suguru’s signals, his spiraling, maybe he could have stopped it.

That moment where Suguru returns to the high school to declare war only to leave again, when Satoru watches and watches, (according to the JJK 0 Light Novel) his “eyes kept following the shape of Geto’s soul”. He couldn’t look away. He was filled with so much regret. His entire creed is to raise strong sorcerers together so that no one has to be alone the way Suguru and he ended up.

And when the time came for him to kill Suguru, because last words are so important to him, he finally told Suguru what he should have told him when they were high schoolers. “I love you.”

Suguru, who’d long buried those feelings, probably realized that the things he’d told himself about how Satoru viewed him were wrong. This whole time, Satoru really did love and trust him still. That’s why he smiled. He was loved in return.

“You should at least curse me a little at the end.”

He wishes Satoru would have hated him because now he’s filled with regret. If only they’d had talked sooner, none of this would have happened. Suguru had always placed emphasis on ‘found family’. We see this when he calls Kuroi “Riko’s family” and when he adopts Mimiko and Nanako, as well as the rest of the sorcerers/curse users he rounds up for the Night Parade of 1,000 Demons. With that said, I know for a fact that when they were in high school, he saw Satoru as his family. He saw him as home, as safety, as love.

Really, the only time that he and Satoru aren’t putting on some sort of act is when they’re alone together. It’s strange to see the two of them so serious, especially Satoru, who deflects with humor like his life depends on it. But it’s fitting. They’re just comfortable around each other, there’s no need for masks. They never even seriously raised their hands against each other, nor fatally hurt each other’s family/students.

Now, fast-forward to a year later in Shibuya, when Kenjaku uses the love Satoru and Suguru have for each other against Satoru. How does he know seeing Suguru would have such a drastic effect on Satoru that it would immobilize him completely? Did he watch from afar? Did he keep tabs on them? Or did he see Suguru’s memories somehow? Could he feel how Suguru felt when around Satoru? I’d like to think it was both—Kenjaku kept tabs on them before Suguru died, and gained access to his memories after taking him over.

He even knew the tone Suguru used to use for Satoru’s name. The soft way he called his name. He knew the only thing in the entire world that could stop the strongest sorcerer in modern times was using the love of his life against him.

The smile Satoru had when he thought it was Suguru makes me believe that the only thing he wanted was to see him again.

Then, when he realized it wasn’t him, Kenjaku said “how sad, you don’t recognize me?”

As if to say Suguru would be devasted that Satoru didn’t recognize him. Kenjaku knows how Suguru feels about Satoru.

Then Satoru calls him on his bs and he says “creepy, how did you know?”

The only other time Kenjaku is creeped out is waaaaaaay later in the manga (spoilers ahead) when Satoru sets the fight day to Dec 24th Kenjaku acknowledges that it’s romantic, and that “having a date with him on the 24th gives him the creeps”.

Oh, I know he’s grossed out with how much they love each other. Like. How the hell else do you interpret that???? Come. On.

Add in when Suguru somehow comes back from the dead for a moment and tries to choke his own body to save Satoru. Kenjaku is baffled—that’s never happened before. That is a demonstration of love everlasting, absolutely.

Then you have Shoko’s “I’d never fall in love with either of you, but you were still never alone” to SatoSugu, basically confirming that she knew the two of them shared a romantic bond that she couldn’t replicate the depth of.

So. Yes. They were very very much in love with each other and to this day Satoru loves Suguru with every fiber of his being and lives his life dedicated to atoning for his (self-perceived) failures to Suguru. He thinks about him everyday. He says he was his only friend. He has Shoko, Ijichi, Mei Mei, and Utahime and yet he only sees Suguru. He only sees Suguru.

They can also be spotted by an abundance of jewelry, often gifted in addition to their hefty surrogate contract payments, they proudly display, rather than use as spell components, as a mark of how many surrogacies they've completed.

Adventurer

While academic wizards often fit the wizard stereotype, adventurer wizards are the opposite. They live a life that's freer and less structured than most other wizards, and some even tend to be 'looser' than most wizards. Being more exposed to the world, it's variety and temptations, adventurer wizards often end up impregnated by accident, whether by a fight with slimes gone wrong or by a single night of 'drinking and dancing' with one of their party mates, just to name a few examples. Pregnant adventurer wizards are often looked down upon by the rest of wizard-kind, both for the lack of family planning and for the often mismatched outfits they sport, often dressing in whatever they can fit in, as it's hard to find a good tailor who can keep up with their growth and their traveling schedule.

Adventurer wizards often end up settling down outside of the big cities or universities most wizards call home. They usually settle down soon after giving birth. Perhaps not after the first time, or even the second, but usually somewhere between the third and fifth time; when it gets too strenuous, or depending on the location, too dangerous to travel with a party full of young children. Although there are a few who adapt to living in caravans, their ever growing family housed in a series of magically connected and protected caravans they use to continually travel the world in.

Satellite schools or small independent schools are often started by adventurer wizards, giving people in rural and wild areas access to a magical education they would otherwise have to move far away to even get a chance at getting. They are known to teach more practical magic, giving those who then wish to move to more traditional schools an excellent educational baseline. While adventurer wizards may be looked down upon for being "dirtier" from traveling and "sluttier" than most wizards, some of the greatest academic wizards of the day were taught by adventurer wizards. Even if an adventurer wizard does fit the stereotype of mismatched travel worn clothes with a heavy belly, a baby on their hip, and a toddler at their ankles; doesn't mean their contributions to magic and magical education should be disregarded.

Royal Wizard

Many kingdoms require that Royal Wizards have a minimum number of children. The reason is that a wizard who is so powerful as to obtain the status of a Royal Wizard needs to spread their genes and produce a few other powerful magic welders to pass on their power. Adventurer wizards promoted to this position may have already fulfilled that requirement, but since children born as surrogates dont count, academic (and other types of wizards) immediately feel the pressure of this new duty weighing them down. Of course, a Royal Wizard can always leave the child bearing to a partner or so, but in the past, this has left room for doubt of parentage. To prevent the disasters a court drama like that can bring (royals are very big on the whole 'bloodlines' thing), Royal Wizards often just choose to carry the required offspring themselves.

One often can't become a wizard powerful enough to be promoted to a Royal Wizard without a good amount of hubris. And in their hubris, most newly appointed Royal Wizards choose to carry all the offspring they're required to produce in one single pregnancy, despite the warnings of the Royal Wizards that preceded them. They always think they'll be the ones to perfect it, or do it better, or weave just the right combination of spells to alleviate the struggles of previous, 'obviously inferior,' Royal Wizards. Most come to regret this decision around the time the second trimester hits.

It certainly doesn't help that a Royal Wizards pregnancy may take much longer than the average wizard's due to having to pause their pregnancies due to the importance of their work. If a kingdom is at war, it wouldn't do to have your most powerful wizard at risk of going into labor at any moment. Or so gravid they cannot stand to give their speech at a peace conference. There are a thousand different situations, either real, fabricated by the ruler they serve, or even fabricated by the wizard themselves, that force a Royal Wizard to put their pregnancy on pause until it's convenient for them to finish growing their brood and allow labor to commence. While one might assume a Royal Wizard would only have to endure this once in their lifetimes, several kingdoms do have bylaws that state a Royal Wizard must conceive the required amount of children for each new ruler that ascends the throne. Conceive, not birth, which prevents the Royal Wizard from simply pausing their pregnancy at the end of a rulers life. This is most common in kingdoms with high turnover in leadership, or those with bylaws requiring the reigning ruler to be the one to breed their Royal Wizard.

Tips: Studying at Home

Adjust your learning

The first thing to acknowledge is that an online education demands a different style of learning as opposed to the traditional classroom environment.

You should be aware that you will need to adjust your learning style to ensure you get the most out of any online learning experience by doing things such as:

Fully commit yourself to join in with digital discussions so you are still actively learning and developing key skills such as debating and listening.

Be prepared to try new tech - with new online learning platforms and video calling functions, prepare to become adaptable and open to trying new technologies.

Collaborate with others - whether that’s over instant messenger outside of class/tutoring time, or with online discussions - get involved and you’ll make the most out of your learning experience.

Be self-disciplined - You will need to ensure that you’re ahead with the class work, pre-reading course materials where you can and ensuring excellent time management to prevent missing classes. All of this will help you to get the most out of your online learning.

Clear Distractions

When setting up your home study and/or work space, make sure there is nothing in the background that may distract you or your classmates/co-workers.

That includes putting your phone in a separate room or turning it off completely to avoid taking your attention during your online learning. 

It’s important to note that you may also need to move your work space throughout the day - perhaps you may need to move as sunlight comes through your window to avoid screen glare.

So have a think about this before you are forced to move and re-position halfway through a learning session.

Use headphones and a microphone (where possible)

If you have them, make sure you use headphones and a microphone so you can clearly hear your tutor/classmates, as well as deliver clean and clear audio for easy flow of communication.

Even if you don’t have access to this, most laptops do have a reasonably high-spec audio and microphone set already built into them, however having a specific kit will always elevate your sound and audio quality.

Make sure your camera is stable

Again, to help avoid distractions during your online learning, make sure your laptop or webcam is sturdy and pointing ahead to avoid any strange angles. 

Also, don’t sit too close to your camera either as the audio could muffle if you are sitting close to the microphone on your device. 

Prevent interruptions

We’ve all seen that BBC News video interview - and we know you certainly don’t want to have the same happen to you. 

To avoid this, make sure anyone you live with is aware that you will be doing some online learning from home and to ask them to leave you alone to concentrate.

If you can, close a door and stick a sign on the outside of it, making it clear that you cannot be disturbed.

Pre-prepare resources

If you have work that you want to share with your tutor or other students during a video lesson, make sure you have them ready and waiting on your desktop with clear file names, and are ideally already open and waiting before you start.

This will avoid time-wasting if you need to hunt around your downloads folder and browser tabs. 

Strong Wi-Fi connection

Before joining an online session, make sure your Wi-Fi session is working and up to scratch.

The website; Speed Test will help you to see what sort of internet speeds you’re currently getting, and whether they will be strong enough to support video calls.

There are a few obvious steps too to try and consider to improve your Wi-Fi strength, such as putting your internet box up high on a sideboard, making sure nothing is covering it, and setting up your work space close to where the box is. 

If you do have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you may struggle to host a video call, so it’s worth considering if there’s any other locations you could use for your learning session - perhaps a friend or relative’s home?

Pre-read material

If possible, review any resources and material that you’ll be studying before your online learning session.

This will give you the chance to prepare for any discussions, have questions ready to ask about subject matter that you haven’t quite fully understood, as well as help the new knowledge to be absorbed ever so slightly easier.

We’ll be getting the following new functions:

Part 1 (beginning 11 Mar):

Event Recall - Previously completed stories will be available to enjoy in the same way the original events were presented (instead of just the story in archive form). If the event story has not already been unlocked through normal play through, it will require gems to unlock. Missed rhythmics will be made available in the RHYTHMIC page once cleared. This is available through the Story tab.

Memory Shop - Items that were previously available during events (such as extra cards and groovy items, etc.) will be available in the Memory Shop. Memory Medals are required to purchase items from this shop, which can be bought in the gem shop, or during this event in the Tuna Can 2024 Shop. You must have finished the event either via the original run or from the Event Recall for items to be available for purchase.

Crewel/Trein/Vargas Item Gacha - New Item Gacha will be available that require "Reward Medals" to roll in. These Reward Medals will be dropped during lessons. The Item Gachas will have items from those respective lessons available. In addition, Crewel's Item Gacha will have the new Buddy Lv Up Items.

Buddy Lv Up Items - The Friendship Herb Tea will be available to increase Buddy Levels of cards. There will be three tiers (L, M, and S) and will be dropped during Alchemy and Special classes.

Other Changes

Up to 25 teams can be saved for use during battles. Support or Guest cards cannot be saved in a team.

Support Cards can be pinned, so that they will be easily accessible whenever you need that support.

There will be an option to favorite specific story chapters available from the Archive screen.

Single Magical Keys can now be converted to a Tenfold Magical Key, given that you have 10 single keys available.

Lesson Skip Tickets will become available. This cannot be used for Special lessons.

Collect Battles can be completed in a batch similar to Tests.

Magic Lv can be increased multiple levels at once instead of one at a time.

Battle Speed can now be set to 3x.

AP, BP, and RP can be refilled in batches instead of one at a time.

The Trouble sequence in the Guest Room can be skipped.

The Guest Room invite time will be reduced.

Part 2 (Beginning 15 Mar):

Second Floor of the Guest Room - A second floor to the Guest Room will be added that can be decked out with its own theme, furniture, and BGM. This will unlock at room rank 31.

The Tuna Can [2024] is an event drop and you can get 1, 2 or 5 randomly by completing lessons (History, Flying or Alchemy). You can see how many you have on the bottom of the Event Page. Left is how many you have right now (so if you spent some, the number is lower), right is how many you have collected until now (this is what you need to make Grim permanent).

To quickly go to Grim’s lessons from the event page, click on the Lesson button on the Main Event page or go all the way to the right on the Lesson Page, right after Diasomnia.

When you click on Grim’s card to level him up, you’ll get a message reminding you that he isn’t permanent yet, so items and madol spent on him will also disappear if you don’t make him permanent in time. Just click the black button to proceed.

One of the missions is to level up one of Grim’s magic to Lv.5 and we suggest you start with his M1 if only to complete the missions faster, because you use Tuna Cans to level up magic and the amount needed for each magic is different. (To level up magic, just click on the 4th tab: 魔法Lv)

Stamp Card Info

On the bottom left of the Event Page you’ll see a Stamp Icon, click there and complete some missions for rewards.

The event ends on the 25th, but the First Stamp Card only goes until the 15th 14:59 (JST), so pay attention to the time limit.

A Quick Guide to Ao3 Searches! (Part 1)

From someone who searches for fics frequently!

So, you've decided to make the switch to Ao3! Or maybe it's your first time diving into the world of fanfiction! Either way, welcome!

Why am I making this guide? I feel like a lot of people can be overwhelmed when they first begin to use Ao3, so I'm here to try & help alleviate any confusion!

This guide assumes that you have made an account! Some authors choose to hide their work from those who don't have an account, including me! If you haven't yet, I suggest making one as soon as possible & coming back to this later!

With all of that said, let's get on with it!

Home Page

The first page that you see when you open up a tab with Ao3 should be the home page! From here, you can see tags that you've saved as a favorite, works you've marked for later, & news from Ao3, as well as links to both the Twitter & Tumblr status accounts!

Also on the home page is an empty search bar with a button next to it that says Search in the upper right corner! Above this is where you can access your account, the button to post a new work, & the button to log out of your account!

What we want to focus on is the empty search bar! Here, you can input what you want to look for, & it will show you the works that best match what you put!

Search Results

Now that we have our results, what next? Well, you could always stop here & look through the works manually, but that's generally not a great method, especially since some searches can have thousands of results to sort through! Thankfully, there's a solution!

Towards the right of your screen, a little below where you entered your search, there's a button that says Edit Your Search. If you click on this, it will lead you to a separate page where you can narrow down the works that you're shown, ranging from the title to the amount of bookmarks a work has! I'll briefly go through each filter as I understand it!

Work Search

Work Info

Any Field - Where you can find what you searched for!

Title - Where you can input a work's name if you know it!

Author/Artist - Where you can put the username of the author of the work if you know it!

Date - Where you can input a range of time that fics were posted/updated!

Completion status - Where you can choose from seeing all works, works that have been completed, or works that are still in progress!

Crossovers - Where you can choose to include crossovers, exclude crossovers, or see only crossovers!

Single Chapter - Checking this box will show you works with only one chapter!

Word Count - Where you can specify the word count you're looking for, from exact amount to broad range!

Language - A drop down menu where you can select from a wide range of different languages!

Work Tags

Fandoms - Where you can put what fandoms you're searching for!

Rating - A drop down menu where you can choose what rating you wish to be shown works from, ranging from any to explicit!

Warnings - Checkboxes you can mark to indicate that you want to be shown works with that warning!

Categories - Checkboxes you can mark to indicate that you want to be shown works with that category!

Characters - Where you can put specific character tags!

Relationships - Where you can put specific relationship tags!

Additional Tags - Where you can put tags that are neither characters nor relationships!

Work Stats

Hits - Where you can specify an exact amount to search for, or a broad range!

Kudos - Where you can specify an exact amount to search for, or a broad range!

Comments - Where you can specify an exact amount to search for, or a broad range!

Bookmarks - Where you can specify an exact amount to search for, or a broad range!

Search

Sort by - A drop down menu where you can select how you wish to be shown works in the results!

Sort direction - A drop down menu where you can select which direction you would like to see results sorted by!

Most of these options are pretty self-explanatory, but if you're still unsure of how some of these work, try clicking on the question marks next to certain filters! These should help you understand some things a bit better!

By default, you are shown all works, including ones you might not be interested in! In order to narrow down the results, it's best to use work tags that match what you're looking for! Excluding results will be explained in the second part to this guide.

There are also different searches you can choose from on this page, those being People Search, Bookmark Search, & Tag Search! You can find the buttons for these below the empty search bar! I don't use these often myself, so I'm not confident in explaining how to use them, thus they are not included in this guide!

Search Works

Now that you've filtered what you want to be shown, you can hit the Search button near the top or bottom of the filter list! Don't click the one next to the empty search bar, but if you do, hitting the back arrow should take you back to the filter list!

For a more comprehensive guide with better explanations, I recommend checking out Ao3's official Tags FAQ, which includes what types of tags there are, how to tag your own works, & the process that goes into making tags, among other things!

This past Thursday, Casey Mcquiston was in my town for an event at the library. They were a block from my job—of COURSE I was gonna go!

I headed over right after work and ended up third in line, and it was great to make a few friends while we waited (I got there stupid early lol). Once they let us in, we had the chance to take photos with a balloon arch and with some signs the library had made which I completely forgot about because my goal was getting a good seat. Got a few little trope stickers and CMQ book cover magnets (except The Pairing was a pin) before heading in for a place to watch them speak. I ended up front row, right in front of them.

To be fair, that part wasn’t planned; there were two seats so they could’ve been not right there lol. I lucked out.

Regardless, it was a wonderful talk. I love them???? Like, obviously I love them, but they’re a joy to listen to. They spoke a bit about their writing process and had a few fun anecdotes to share.

A few things they mentioned:

-They are working on their fifth book. It is NOT the same thing they hinted at during the Pairing Tour. It is also NOT a sequel to anything. It is something adult, romantasy, and a bit of speculative fiction in the way OLS was speculative fiction.

-All they can say about the RWRB sequel is that a sequel was announced and that there is some part of a script somewhat written to some degree.

-It’s a LOT harder to write RWRB in this current political climate. They said it was hard before, but that this time around it’s worse. They want it to give hope—just as the first book did—but getting into a good mind space is tough.

-Apparently, the first time they met Nick on set, they had gone to the bathroom and he hid around the corner to jump out and introduce himself to them.

-Their favorite trope is forced proximity.

-If they weren’t a writer, they’d be a booze cruise DJ. Also, they have their boating license in two states.

-They blame You've Got Mail for their love of romcoms, as that was the first movie they went to see in theatre with their mom.

Obviously they said more over the course of their talk but those were a few fun ones. My details may be a little off on the grounds that I was a little starstruck, but the general overview is correct.

I’m hoping the library will YouTube the video like they do with a lot of their Enters the Chat series (they have their TJ Klune video uploaded, for fans of him, and Mark Oshiro, among others), because I want to watch it again.

Anyway, after the talk, they did a book signing, and since I was way up front, I ended up basically last in line—which is fine, because you know, yay new friends, and also it was chill to wait. The host, Jeff Adams, came over to chat with us while we waited, too, and he thanked my new friends and me for being up front and clearly engaged in the talk (side note: who wouldn’t have been engaged????), but he also spoke with Casey back in 2019 just before RWRB was initially released on the Big Gay Fiction Podcast that he hosted, so we got a little insight that way. Anyway, he’s SUPER nice and we nerded out for a few minutes because he’s big into accessibility which is a big thing I care a lot about as well, so yay, connections to keep in touch!

Once he left because he wanted to get home (valid), we just hung out in line: me, the friend I got to come with me, and this adorable little ball of anxiety college girl that I will love and protect for the rest of my life. She was the actual last in line because we decided she deserved that honor.

Casey was an angel, though. They were obviously tired by that point, but they still marveled at my AGCD-coded tabbed to hell and back book, and they loved my Alex Bearmont-Diaz. He was the hit of the night lol. So many people wanted his picture and I was told multiple times he needs his own Instagram account, haha.

There were no posed photos, but the staff were taking people's phones and snapping shots of our interactions. Like I have 41 photos of the few minutes I got with them!

Anyway, long story short … if you ever have the chance to meet Casey, do it! They’re just absolutely wonderful. 🥰

A free image hosting solution for AO3 and elsewhere - A Tutorial (mobile-friendly!)

This guide is for an easy, mobile-friendly way to host files for hotlinking on AO3 or elsewhere, using github and cloudflare pages.

I've encountered far too many dead links in fanfics and forums simply because a hosting service decided to dump older files, or they decided to change their TOS to no longer allow hotlinking or certain kinds of content (nsfw, fictional graphic content). See Optional Steps for even more options.

This is an easy, barebones way to permanently host images that you don't want deleted unexpectedly or that you can't host elsewhere. (Emphasis on barebones. This will not be a nice portfolio style site. Unless you decide to code that yourself!) You can follow the link above for an example of this type of site.

It is also EASY to upload and use on mobile devices after initial setup!

Tools you will need:

Cloudflare Pages/Workers is a free to use static site hosting service. This will publish your files and make them available online. This will publish your files and make them available online. There is a limit to the amount of data you can upload for free, but you can pay for proper hosting if you want to exceed it.

Github is a code sharing/storage platform. Your files will go here first before being published on Pages. You can edit and upload files through your browser at github.com, or through Github Desktop, a program you install on your computer. There are limits to Github repositories, but they are also generous (suggested 1GB to 5GB per repo).

Basic Setup

1. Create a github account

2. Copy this template repository hotlink-archive-template

Your website will be contained in a repository, a place where all the files and the revision history for your project are stored.

This template repository uses an "Action" (using python) to automatically create a "home" page with an Index of all the files in your repository every time it is updated.

NOTE: I recommend you set your repository to Private. Github's history feature is extensive, so if you have sensitive content or think you might want to delete something later, it will be hard to get rid of it completely once it's been committed and publicly available.

3. Enable Action permissions

In order for the Action script to work, you need to give Actions permission to read and write in your repository.

Within your repository, go to the tab Settings > Actions > General > Workflow Permissions

4. Create a Cloudflare account

5. Create a Pages (or Workers) project and link it to your Github repository

Your Pages project will create the front end of the site where the images will be displayed. You will be able to link those images to other platforms like AO3.

You can create either a Workers or Pages project by going to Add > Pages (or Workers). Name your project WISELY! This name will be your site's URL.

Workers vs. Pages

Workers is subsuming Pages on Cloudflare and now has all the same static hosting capabilities, in addition to its original server-side processing services. If you'd like to, read more about this.

While Workers has similar capabilities, I recommend Pages for this project. Pages has the added bonus of a cleaner URL if you do not have your own domain: “MySite.pages.dev” in Pages vs Workers' “MySite.username.workers.dev”

You will be prompted to import an existing Git repository. You will need to give it access to your Github to do this.

Select the repository on your Github you made for your project, then hit "Begin Setup".

Name your project WISELY! This name will be your site's URL.

You do not need to change any settings on the next page, so hit "Save and Deploy". Your image hosting site will now be live!

The URL will be "https://ProjectName.pages.dev". It may take a few minutes to become accessible.

Now you're done with the basic setup!

How to Add files

You can add any files you want to link to on AO3/elsewhere through mobile, desktop browser, or the Github desktop program!

Here is how to do it on Github.com:

Open up the repository that you made (it can be found at github.com/username/repositoryname). You will see a list of folders and files that are in that repository.

Click into the folder "fan-stuff".

In the top right, go Add file > Upload files and drag in the images you want added. You will need to name the images BEFORE you upload them, as there is not an easy renaming feature within Github's browser interface.

In the Commit changes box, choose a title for what action you are doing. This will help you backtrack uploads if needed.

For example, it could be "Uploaded Batman Art". Make sure it's set to "commit directly to the main branch", then commit those changes. This will upload the files.

Now, if you visit your site, you will see your uploaded image under the "fan-stuff" folder!

To embed/link your image, navigate to your file on your Pages site and copy the URL in the address bar. This URL is what you will use to embed your photo (using HTML or "add image as URL" tools some sites have).

Github’s web UI is great, but it has major limitations. I highly recommend that you use Github Desktop during the initial setup, as well as when you want to make major organizational changes to your files/site. Once you have everything set, though, you can use Github in your browser to upload whatever files you want to hotlink at the moment.

Download Github Desktop and “clone” (download a copy of) the repository you made.

This is the best time to rename/rearrange folders + files, etc.

There are other methods in the Troubleshooting section if you need, but Github Desktop is by far the easiest way

Once you’re done editing, “push” (upload) all the changes you made to your online Github repository.

Having some sort of text editor like Notepad++ is useful for editing any code, the automatic color-coding is very helpful. You can edit in plain old Notepad as well, it just won’t look as nice.

About the Index Page

The template repository uses a python Action to automatically create an HTML "home" page with an Index of ALL the files in the folder every time it is updated.

This is particularly convenient for mobile use, as you can upload a file, and the python action automatically updates the Index page.

If you don’t want this, just disable the “create-index” Action and delete the .py files. You can just type in the file locations to get to each file, or you can manually maintain an home/Index page yourself, which isn't hard if you know some basic HTML and can remember to do it consistently.

Also note that if you wish to change any of the content on your Index pages, you must edit the "index.py" file, not the "index.html" file. The "index.html" file gets re-written every time the "create-index" Action is run in order to keep the file index up to date.

Adding/Renaming/Deleting Folders

Disclaimer: This is a bit convoluted because I am extremely unqualified to be working with python OR HTML. There’s probably an easy way to do this, but I don’t have the skill to do it, and most of the stuff here is copied from stuff I found around. If you know a better way to do things, please let me know, it’d make my life easier too!

Adding or renaming folders involves some extra steps.

1. The "index.py" file inside the folder needs to be edited to match the parent folder name.

The place you need to do this is found near the top of the file (highlighted below)

2. Then the outer-most "create-index.py" file needs to be updated to match the new name as well. If you’ve added a new folder, duplicate and adjust the code to match.

If you don’t need any folders at all, great! Just delete them and their contents! No need to edit any files. (Don’t delete “index.html” or “create-index.py” or “.github/workflows”!)

If you would like to have these folders for later use, leave them as-is and simply edit the index files.

The relevant lines of code at the bottom of "create-index.py" like in the previous step for renaming folders. You may delete this code, or comment it out (using # at the beginning of a line will make it “invisible” to the computer)

Then, add the folder’s name to the “exclusions” list at the top of the "create-index.py" file so that it doesn’t show up on your Index page (highlighted below)

You can also use this same concept to create "invisible" files/folders. Any files/folders included in the "exclusions" list in "(create-)index.py" will not be listed on the Index page, however they can still be found through the direct URL to the file.

On the flipside, this means simply hiding the file/folder from the Index page does not get rid of the file from your site. Anyone who has the URL will be able to find that file unless you remove it, or move its location to change the URL

Tips/Troubleshooting

(Re)name your files before uploading

It’s not possible to rename image/media files on Github’s web UI (it is possible with the local Git program). The "create-index" Action lists out the names of your files exactly, so you will end up with ugly strings of numbers and letters on your Index page if you don't rename them, which is terrible to look at and also plain old CONFUSING to navigate.

So if you're uploading on mobile or through Github on browser, name your files with easy to remember and distinctive filenames before you go ahead and upload them. This makes everything much easier, and it makes your Index page look nice :)

Check to see if your Pages is retrieving from the correct branch, and if it has automatic deployments enabled.

Can’t see your Github repository when trying to link it on Cloudflare?

Check your Github applications Repository Access settings. Go to your ACCOUNT Settings > Integrations - Applications > Cloudflare > Repository Access

Index action is failing!

Go back to step 3 in Basic Setup and check if you’ve given Actions permission to read and write. If that’s not the issue, check to see if you’ve set up your "index.py" files correctly. The folder names should correspond to the parent folders, and the "create-index.py" file in the outer-most folder should have the correct folder names at the VERY BOTTOM.

How do I rename a folder (or move a file) in Github’s web UI?

It isn’t possible to directly rename a folder in Github’s web UI, doing it using Git on your computer is the most foolproof way to do it. But there is a way (except for media files).

Go into the folder you want to rename and select a file such as “index.html” and enter the “edit” mode.

Go to the file name and backspace until you can edit the parent folder name as well. This will create a new folder with the new name.

You’ll have to do this to every file in the folder until they’re all in the new folder.

Unfortunately, you can’t do this with media files like png/jpg/etc, because entering the “edit” mode on a photo “breaks” it somehow, and bye-bye image :’) (Don’t worry if this happens, just don’t commit the change or roll it back in your history).

Optional Steps

Make deployment (semi-)Manual

You can play with cloudflare and github to make deployment of your site a manual step you have to trigger, instead of automatic with each commit (default setting). This is a safeguard in case you accidentally make a change or delete something from your github, it won't affect your website.

Deploy w/ Branches

You could do a semi-automatic deployment with a "Production" branch on your github that is separate from the branch you edit. This creates an extra step before anything is published on Cloudflare. A safeguard against accidental changes/deletion of sorts :)

Go to Settings > Build tab > Branch Control

Choose your Production Branch (MAIN or CLOUDFLARE) and enable (or disable) automatic deployments

If you choose MAIN, every change you commit to MAIN will be published to Pages

If you choose CLOUDFLARE, any changes you make to MAIN will not show up on your Pages site until you Pull from MAIN to CLOUDFLARE

To Pull changes from MAIN to CLOUDFLARE, go to your github repository

Above your files on the Left, you will see a toggle to choose which branch you are on.

Choose Cloudflare. There will be a message like "This branch is 7 commits ahead of, 2 commits behind main." Click "2 commits behind"

Click "Create a Pull Request". Then click "Merge Pull Request". If everything is correct, this should trigger a build on your Cloudflare

Deploy w/ Github Actions

Or you can create a manual command that you have to enter on github to trigger a deployment on cloudflare. If you're paranoid about anything happening to your site due to a mishap on the Github side, this is a safe choice. Unless you manually trigger the command, your Pages site will be completely untouched no matter if something happens to your repo.

This can be done in many ways, I think the most straightforward is with Deploy Hooks (maybe in conjunction with Actions if you want to make it mobile-friendly), and might be a bit complicated, but not too hard to figure out with some Google-fu.

Storing Locally instead of on Github

Although this guide is written with Cloudflare's Github integration in mind, particularly for easy online/mobile access, you can also keep your files locally on your PC and directly upload your assets onto your Pages project. This gives you full control over what happens to your files. (Keeping backups is a good idea. You can still use Github Desktop to do this, just keep your repository on your PC.)

Simply clone/download the repository as it is, customize it as you like, and create a NEW Pages project on Cloudflare, using "Direct Upload" to upload your files

Once you have connected a Pages project with Github, there is no way to change the deployment method to Direct Upload or vice versa. Direct Upload is also not available for Workers.

One thing that will NOT work the same is the "create-index" Action that only works on Github.

I have made a "create-index.exe" that will execute the "create-index.py" files in the exact same way as they would work with the Action. You do not have to install python for this to work (if I did everything right). Simply run "create-index.exe" whenever you make a change and want to update the "index.html" files

Remember, this is EXACTLY THE SAME as the "create-index" Action, meaning you have to edit each "index.py" file when you rename folders, add a folder, want to exclude a file from the Index page, etc. (See Adding/Renaming Folders for how to do this)

I had a look at GIMP 3.0, which is the next major upcoming release of the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

I used a Fedora Linux 41 Spin with the Xfce desktop environment in Distrosea to test the release candidate version.

To get GIMP 3.0, I used Fedora's built in package manager, which is called Dnfdragora to search for and install it.

Dnfdragora is a graphical frontend tool based on 'rpmdrake' for installing, uninstalling and upgrading various packages in Dandified Yellow Dog Updater (DNF) on Red Hat based Linux builds.

However it refused to install due to a limit in the virtual disk size. So I had to remove quite a few various applications which came pre-installed with this version of Fedora.

Once I had finished uninstalling the packages, I tried again and successfully managed to install GIMP.

I clicked on the entries in the menu and GIMP launched. I modified the layout of the tab panels to my liking and edited a screenshot taken within the VM.

GIMP 3.0 (RC3) was released earlier this year and is a step closer to a final stable release which features a complete GTK3+ UI overhaul, HiDpi improvements, a fresh logo, non-distraction editing of images, various fixes and new features.

My love made a task list app for me so I can be a bit more prepared going into my MFA residency this December <3 It toggles between categories where you can add tasks to specific categories. The categories are user-created, so you can tailor them to your individual needs. For example: I needed a category for work, school, around the home, and personal goals. Categories with no tasks turn purple and categories with tasks that still need to be completed turn pink and lists how many tasks are left to complete in each category (for example: I have 3 work tasks to complete) The tasks lists are accessible via the navigation pane on the left, so I'm not bombarded with all the tasks being visible on my screen at once. Instead, I can toggle between categories and focus on one category at a time. This helps me from getting distracted by all the other things I need to do. If I want to spend Monday mornings focusing on just school work, then I'll only open the MFA Residency tab.

He's planning on adding a Spotify player to it for my lo-fi studying playlist, as well as a few other features I'm looking forward to (theme customizations, animated background, a calendar...etc) but it's currently functional and ready for me to play with! Becky sighed. Moments earlier, she'd been so excited. Now, she was wondering how quickly she could learn to speak Spanish.

It wasn't that bad an idea, actually, especially considering Kevin certainly would never bother learning. She didn't know why, it would have made sense for him to do so ages ago, but for some stupid reason, he was unwilling to even try.

So, if he wouldn't do it, at least she could.

But, that was later. In the meantime, the crappy online translator would have to do.

I don't speak Spanish, she typed back, But if you can put up with lousy online translations, we might be able to pull this off.

She translated it, copied it, pasted it, and sent it off.

The reply took longer that time, and she immediately filtered It through her translator again.

It is good enough. I understand.

It wasn't perfect, but yeah, it would work. Although she was pretty sure there would be stuff lost in the translations.

In the meantime…

How are you messaging me? Are you using Kevin's computer? Did he let you? 

A quick response that time.

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

If you are using his computer without permission, Generico, he will skin you.

There was a longer pause that time.

No. I am using my computer.

Rebecca blinked. Hard.

When the hell did Generico get a computer??? she thought, more than a little alarmed. 

It took her a moment to collect herself but, once she did, she responded.

When did you get a computer? And how? 

Copy, translate, send.

And after a long pause…

habia un hombre en una tienda de la ciudad.  el tenia esto y le pague en efectivo.  costo mucho pero Kevin no sabia que tenia dinero.  ahora, no.  pero funciona.  necesitaba hablar contigo.

It was a hell of a lot of Spanish, and Rebecca knew the translator would have a hell of a time with it, but…

There was a man in a store in the city.  He had this and I paid him cash.  It cost a lot but Kevin didn't know he had money.  Not now.  But it works.  He needed to talk to you.

Well that doesn't sound right. Did he steal Kevin’s money???

Who needed to talk to me?, she asked. And did you steal Kevin’s money?

NO! the response came. Generico dinaro! Geneirco habla! 

Becky didn't need the translator that time.

Not that it would have helped anyway.

Messaging through a translator, especially one that was trying to compensate for her friend's speech patterns, was going to be a bitch, she could tell.

So. It was your money, and now it's your computer. How much did it cost?

Two months, Generico replied.

“God,”  she said aloud, staring at the nonsensical translation, “This is shit. How the hell are we going to work this???”

You know, Generico, if I'm going to message you, I should probably learn Spanish.

si. espanol muy bien.

She was already beginning to treasure the messages she didn't need babelfish for.

Suddenly, her phone began to ring.

BRB, she quickly typed And, sending it along, she answered the phone.

It was Finn.

“Becky!” Finn said, far too enthusiastically for, among other things, the middle of winter, “Are you busy? I'm in your area and was thinking maybe lunch.”

Rebecca looked back at her screen where a lone question mark had appeared as a response, Generico clearly not understanding what BRB meant in any language.

And as she stared at it, thinking of how excited she had been to get that first message and how sad she knew in her heart Generico would be if she logged off so soon, she couldn't help but smile into the phone as she replied.

“You know, Prince,” she said, invoking the nickname she had given Finn years earlier, “I think I am.”
