Just imagining Dipper's parents finally trying to get their shit together and rekindle their relationship with the twins after several years of almost no contact, only to show up in town and 1. Dipper doesn't recognize them at first, and 2. When they remind him who they are, his brain scrambles for a second because, in his head, his "Dad" is already in the shack, scamming groups of tourists for loose change. He nearly goes, "huh? But my dad is-," and points to the shack, before catching up with his brain and realizing who he's talking to

see, the thing is that (up until countdown at least) there’s no symmetry in jay and bruce's respective ways of grieving.

jay is perpetually trapped in the bargaining stage of grief, trying to reach out to bruce from beyond death.

bruce is way past this. he has settled into a quiet, passive type of mourning, devoid of hope for a reunion. and to stay in this state, he had to necessarily disregard jay’s true image – an image of an earnest, bright child, his son. the memory of jay has been reconstructed in his mind a thousand times and sealed in a folder labeled as “soldier” (or even just a personal failure). it's ugly. it's unfair. it's a coping mechanism.

so to me, the issue isn't that bruce wants his dead, sweet little boy back – the issue is that he barely remembers him. if he did, maybe he would be willing to take a leap of faith and search for that person in jason who came back. but he's not even trying to reconcile the image of 15yo jay with red hood – or rather, maybe the image of a volatile kid that he created in his grief fits with the red hood a bit too accurately. maybe it's a bit too convenient. it works perfectly well for his own self-preservation and sanity, to think that jason has been doomed from the beginning.

jason, on the other hand, is cursed with remembering. one of the very sparse concepts that i found interesting in rhato was when in #3 (2011) jason chose to give up on his happiest memory – skipping patrol to watch a movie with bruce. maybe it's because recalling these tender, sweet moments is what gives him hope, and motivates him to keep bargaining and trying to reconcile with bruce. and bargaining with reality is exhausting. the readers and jay know that it's a lost cause – both because neither bruce nor jay are the same people anymore, but also because, ironically, batman, the symbol of hope, doesn't have any left when it comes to getting his son back. bruce, in his grief, essentially closed the door. jay, in his grief, is banging on them.

aki kind of navigates the world worried his loved ones will leave him and is a little too clingy because of it. he also has been playing those worries off by being charming, flirty and funny. like he can somehow project this hyper-extrovered version of himself and try to make people love that !!! he drops that more around his bandmates/friends, but not in front of people he's just met (please guess who accidentally escalated the bed fight on the tour bus)

aki also hooks up with people a lot, just cause he likes sex but also because he enjoys the no-strings-attached. because of those attachment issues, when he gets something that feels black and white to him, something one-and-done and he leaves in the morning, he can just. take feelings out the equation. he knows its not meant to last so he can just walk out (leave! hit da bricks!!! walk out!!!!!)

committing to a romantic relationship . you can imagine. is a little complicated due to all this LMFAO he just overthinks and worries before even getting into it, regardless of if it's reciprocated or not. between the one time he's actually into someone (seven) and how that ended (...badly) + the fact that deliriously avoiding commiting to anything except hookups = very little (none at all) actual dating experience. aki has no idea to deal with it and will balk. yeah this is immature of him but i have plans to make this guy character develop so hard throughout the course of infamous that he may implode

First of all; your art style is absolutely gorgeous and I want to eat it /pos, second; I've seen a lot of cat-like mannerisms in your designs of the V units, and this may have already been shown in a drawing or two, but do they have the ability to create a sound similar to purring? Maybe the whirring of fans or buzzing of machinery to indicate contentment?

Third; A bit more of a specific one because I'm really curious- in one of your drawings (Caption "In the tomb of Saint Gabriel", the one in your banner.) he's shown attacking V1, however your other drawings show them on more friendly/affectionate terms. Did Gabriel briefly lose (or altogether lose) some of his memories after falling? Did he have to be reminded of said memories and/or rediscover them? Or was this drawing simply a standalone piece?

aaaaa thank you!!! i really do like to think the v-units have some equivalent to expressing joy with a soft little refrigerator hum - this can happen for a variety of reasons of course, but this "comfortable" hum doesn't involve their fans kicking on like they might when their systems are truly being taxed. it's just a little extra cooling coming on because the v-units were never meant to experience contentment, safety, or love. their computers have to work just a little harder at processing it, and so they make a small, gentle buzz when they're most content :]

as for the pieces i drew of the fight in gabriel's tomb, that is how i see v1 encountering fallen gabriel for the first time - when gabriel is first resurrected, he is disoriented and highly emotional, unable to control the overwhelming grief that consumes him immediately upon waking. and v1 is central to his fall, in the moment he sees it as the devastation that took away everything he was, the thing that tore the light out of him. this is, of course, the logic that heaven would want him to believe and he does eventually come to his senses, but he fully intends to kill v1 before he regains that control. i really see it as the last true fight against gabriel, where he takes on a strategy and brutality similar to that of the prime souls while fully reflecting the kind of emotion we see in heresy - he has been stripped of his weapons but given the full extent of his strength, angrily lamenting his death and his fall while knowing he can do nothing to regain his place in heaven.

Finally crawling out of his hiding spot in the brambles, he meticulously brushes the leaves from his clothes and composes himself, now fully focused on his generic traveler's map of the area... After checking it about 500 times just to make sure he isn't confused, he determines that going down the nearby river would likely still get him where he's trying to go, and hopefully be much less treacherous than wandering through haunted forests or confronting the stern gaze of the barrier guards..

It only takes about 10 minutes of following a narrower rocky path off the main road to reach a nice shaded spot of land next to a small river. He kneels in the grass, eagerly rummaging through his backpack for supplies, in addition to whatever he can scavenge from the edge of the woods. The rush of excitement slowly dissipates however, once he realizes that he.. actually.. might not know how to make a raft as well as he thought... Surely it's quite straightforward, no? Just.. make it look like it does in picture books?? There are no rules, as long as it floats, it works! Probably anyone could build one on intuition alone! ... maybe...???
