I was listening to an interview that Alexander Siddig did with Trek Geeks and this man said that he stayed up so late playing video games in the 90’s, and was so tired all the time on set, that the producers staged an intervention and were like ā€œWe’re going to support you no matter what your answer is but: are you on drugs?ā€

This is the second time in my life I've heard the word 'codec'.
The first time was in university when one of my online friends was super into this one anime series and thought I should watch it. Please note, this was in the days when if you wanted non-dubbed anime, you needed a source of fan subs. So she made me a copy of the fan subs she'd gotten and sent it to me with the promise that 'it had the right divex codec." Or was it divix? Divx? No clue and it doesn't really matter because I didn't know what the hell it was.
We'll go with divex, since I can't remember and have never heard of it since. The important part is that having no idea what she was talking about I went "Um, okay, thanks" and tried to play the DVD on my computer.
It didn't work.
When I told her I couldn't get it to play, she was absolutely confounded because she knew she'd given me the right codec, so she tried again. And again. I finally just gave up.
Ages later, after I'd lost any and all interest in the anime in question, something occurred to me. I hit...I think Hotbot was still THE Search Engine at the time...and sure enough.
With all of her fretting over getting me the right divex codec, she'd never once thought to make sure I had a divex player.
I still don't have the first idea what a codec is, and probably wouldn't know what to do with one if I did.
one piece of Computer Guy contrairianism i can't stand is "webp isn't actually bad, the programs you use just aren't equipped to support it!" okay well. soudns like for all intents and purposes its bad then innit

Stan and Ford being off the internet on their sailing trip works out for both of them. For Ford, it lets him avoid new technology and enjoy his old study methods of physical books & journals. For Stan, it means he and his brother can more easily put off resolving the whole fake ID thing.
I imagine they have to get very creative when authorities ask for proof of identity...
I also imagine that, upon discovering online databases (and the sheer amount of scholarly research they hold), Ford goes absolutely WILD
