Types of Sociology 

Micro- small group interactions. Interactions are viewed in order to better grasp how they impact larger society.

Macro- examines large scale social structures to determine how they impact groups and individuals 

Sociological Paradigms

Social Darwinism

Survival of the fittest, this is considered one of the first sociological views “People are poor because they can’t adapt”

Herbert Spencer is known for social Darwinism

Functionalism

Emile Durkheim Studied social factors that contributed to suicide (wrote a book on suicide that goes into detail about the ofur types of suicide) he was the first to consider the relationship between suicide, social isolation, and society

Conflict Theory

Karl Marx- German philosopher who focused on economics. He believed there were two types of people: bourgeois (those who purchase labor) and the proletariat (those who sell their labor). Karl Marx believed that the proletariat would develop class consciousness (when an individual realizes that the people around you are a part of the same class), and then overthrow the bourgeois. 

Symbolic interactionism

Associated with Mead (believed meaning came from interactions)  and Goffman (dramaturgy). This school of thought says that nothing is inherently meaningful, but that we derive meaning from interactions

Feminist Theory

Branches off from conflict theory, but specializes in the inequality of genders. Feminist theory seeks to reform. 

Queer Theory

Belief that sexual identity is a social construct and that there is no sexual category that is fundamentally deviant or normal.

A #troubleshooting story in photos. I’m trying to get a brukpocket #workflow output for my pattern design software so I can #design from my #laptop rather than hunched over tables and wrecking my already mashed up back. I have access to a vinyl cutter/plotter through my membership at #Toronto’s best #makerspace @hacklab.to and this is the story of me trying to get my virtual machine to recognize and control the hardware, then making sure that the scaling was proper. Clothing patterns have to print out the correct measurements or it’s not going to work out. This is the stage I’m at now. Thanks to my friend Igor I was able to determine how to get the virtual machine to be able to actually access the usb port, which, oddly enough isn’t automatic. Nothing on virtual machines is! In the end, I plotted out a 1” square to try and figure out how to offset any discrepancies in measurements but they seem to change with every print. Oh well, baby steps. I’m learning a lot about computers while I try to figure things out. A #VirtualMachine is basically a computer within your computer. It’s basically a whole fresh computer walled off from your main computer that you can run jenky software from and not harm the rest of your system. You have to install a whole separate operating system and tell it to actually use the peripherals we take for granted will work automatically on out main machines. Neat, eh? I kinda love this shit but the frustration is real. I have good news. So you know how I’ve been having lots of lagging issues with my streams? Well I’m gonna be getting a new computer for better streams. It’s a desktop PC. Windows 10 & comes with a keyboard, mouse, speakers and a web cam. Better stream quality is on the way. Yay!!

Dag 177 – “Movie”

Dit verhaal hoort bij mijn werkdag van woensdag 3 februari.

Wat ik de vorige keer achterwege liet in mijn verhaal was de worsteling waarmee ik de afgelopen dagen, in het weekend en zelfs gisteravond na en tijdens de open dag mee kampte. Een belofte die ik gedaan had.

Toen ik mijn eindexamenleerlingen in december overnam van mijn collega had ik mezelf een paar doelstellingen meegegeven: zorg dat ze goed weten wat ze moeten kunnen aan de hand van leerdoelen, zorg dat ze ook in hun eigen tijd kunnen werken aan de verwerving van de leerdoelen en sta voor de leerlingen klaar als dat nodig is.

Dus begon ik met alle stof te splitsen in leerdoelen, hier uitlegdia’s per leerdoel aan te koppelen om daarna per leerdoel aan te geven wat ze kunnen doen om het te oefenen. De laatste, en meest ambitieuze stap, was het maken van filmpjes per leerdoel. Niet van een hele paragraaf, maar specifiekere en daardoor ook kortere filmpjes zodat ze alleen hoeven te kijken naar de theorie die ze nog lastig vinden.

Leuk zo’n belofte, maar die maakt wel schuld. De afgelopen weken had ik mijn handen al vol aan het voorbereiden van de lessen en de theorie steeds net op tijd op een rijtje te hebben voor de leerlingen. En de filmpjes raakten dus achterop, zakten steeds weer net teveel op mijn prioriteitenlijst. Maar afgelopen vrijdag realiseerde ik me, dat het nu of nooit was. Deze week gingen mijn leerlingen namelijk de SE’s maken.

Dus ging ik het weekend in met de opdracht om filmpjes te maken bij 42 leerdoelen. Pfoe. Mijn collega’s ware niet jaloers op me, maar het was mijn eigen schuld en verantwoordelijkheid. Voor de zekerheid had ik die vrijdag toch even een polletje gedaan hoe graag zij het wilde en hoeveel gebruik ze er van zouden maken. Met een score van 4,5 ster op een schaal van 5, wist ik dat ik het móest doen. En zoals ik altijd zeg: wat moet, dat kan. Dus die vlieger moest nu ook op gaan.

Na een hele zaterdag te werken, voor mijn gevoel althans, had ik nog geen filmpje opgenomen. Wel had ik de presentatie flink uitgebreid omdat ik ook nog theorie moest verfilmen van ‘voor mijn tijd’, die leerdoelen had ik dus nog niet uitgewerkt. Tijdens het maken van zo’n presentatie kan ik me dan helemaal verliezen aan de volledigheid, de overgangen en de animaties die soepel lopen. Zodat ik niet voor verrassingen kom te staan in de les, normaal gesproken, of nu dus tijdens het opnemen van het filmpje.

Zondag kon ik daar de vruchten van plukken. Ik werkte verder aan de presentatie maar nam ook een zooi filmpjes op. Leerdoel voor leerdoel werkte ik ze af, plaatste ik ze op YouTube en zette ik de link in een excel die ik deelde met de leerlingen maar die ook automatisch voor mij de beschrijving van de video aanmaakte die ik kon gebruiken bij het uploaden. Mijn innerlijke computernerd kon z’n hart ophalen met al het geexcel en gepowerpoint dat ik in één weekend deed.

Het weekend was voorbij en ik had zeker nog geen 42 filmpjes. Dus de maandag werd gebruikt, de maandagavond (toen ik er werk thuis op mij te wachten lag na de open middag), de dinsdag en de dinsdagavond. Tijdens en rond de open avond gisteravond was ik nog druk bezig met uploaden. Tot het moment dat er stond: “uploadlimiet bereikt”. Mijn hart zonk even in mijn schoenen toen ik de tweede zin las: “U kunt 24 uur geen nieuwe video’s meer uploaden”.

Vierentwintig uur? Dan gaat het dus niet lukken! Ik moest er namelijk nog wel een aantal uploaden en alles wat ik ná vandaag uploadde sloeg écht nergens meer op, ik vond vandaag eigenlijk al te laat. Morgen is het schoolexamen NaSk1 (natuurkunde) en vrijdag het schoolexamen NaSk2 (scheikunde). Dus wat was ik als een kind zo blij toen ik vanmorgen wél weer kon uploaden, slechts 12 uur later. Gelukkig bedoelde YouTube gewoon dat ik gisteren niets meer kon uploaden.

Het was een interessant proces van zes dagen en ik was 42 leerdoelen, 42 filmpjes en meer dan 300 presentatiepagina’s verder. Ik was trots op het eindresultaat, of eigenlijk met name op het feit dat het gelukt was. Natuurlijk baalde ik ook dat het niet eerder af was en heb ik mezelf voorgenomen om het de volgende periode wel bij te houden maar onder druk werk ik nou eenmaal het best. Helaas was mijn timing misschien niet het beste voor de leerlingen, maar wel hield ik woord. Wat moet, dat kan. Eind goed, al goed. Gelukkig is er aan het einde van een goede film, na een sticky mess, altijd een happy ending.
