based on one of your latest tiktok saga posts:
I'm convinced that when people heard billy hargrove apparently had a crush on steve, a small but dedicated portion of eddie's followers started jokingly stanning billy. the cross section of conspiracy theorists / shitposters absolutely clowns all over eddie's comments with shit like "simping for the man who hit you with his car is king behaviour" and "wow, steve literally ran this guy over and he really just said thank you m'am. pathetic. I'm kissing him on the mouth btw."
I also like to imagine eddie would absolutely loathe this development
Oh my god, this is hilarious and very, very apt for internet culture. People were jokingly stanning Billy and then someone with an old Hawkins High yearbook posts a picture of him, and people realized he was hot then, game over. It’s the worst week of Eddie’s life and he once was on the run for murder, fought an interdimensional slime monster with daddy issues, and died in the same week.
I think Eddie absolutely adores fan art. His studio is lined with art that people have given him and that he’s bought from fans. He was even more over the moon when people started drawing art of him and Steve, but then. Then, these very talented jokesters in his comments are posting fan art of Steve with Billy.
Just imagine the amount of discourse Billy would create on the internet. It’d be worse than the discourse in the ST fandom, because Eddie has never had an opinion that he hasn’t shared. He’d let people know that he hates this. Billy was a bully who harassed him and his friends and liked shitty music.
This would egg people on more, I think, because that’s how the internet works. But Dustin, as president of the Steve Harrington fan club, would not let that slide. He posts a Tiktok like, “Uh, guys. You’re very talent artists and all, but uh. Billy Hargrove tried to kill Steve. He *picture of Steve after Hopper took him to the hospital* beat Steve up really bad and he wouldn’t have stopped if Max didn’t drug him. He ran me and my friends off the road once. And he was racist. He tried to fight Lucas.”
Max also posts. She talks about how hard it was after Billy died and how it nearly killed her, but she also talks about how he wasn’t a good brother, how afraid she was of him, and how he attacked Lucas and attacked Steve for sticking up for them. She doesn’t really want to see him on her FYP.
This leads to so much fighting between people who view Billy as their new white boy of the month and people who are like, why are you retraumatizing that girl in a wheelchair (I imagine post-season 4 Max does have mobility of her legs and walks with a limp or a cane, but sometimes still has to use a wheelchair). It’s just very annoying until the next big scandal happens and people stop talking about it.

Conspiracies and the Problem of Peggy Carter
I bounced really hard off the Captain Carter version of Peggy Carter. For me, it felt like the triumph of her style over any quality she had as a character. I’ve spoken about this before, but I think giving Peggy dementia robbed her of her voice, unable to speak to her past, and thus providing a blank canvas for the writer and audience to use with as they will.
My biggest critique of Peggy’s fans have been this sense that they love her aesthetic and the platitudes over the substance of the character. She became 2010s girlboss. The Agent Carter series did provide the potential to further explore her as a character. It could give her a past pre-dating Steve, show the history of SHIELD, show her as a leader, and delve into the moral complexities of the MCU intelligence side. But that never happened. The show was canceled after two seasons and all we had left was a very marketable aesthetic.
We have some vague notions of what she did during her time as director of SHIELD, but nothing substantial. Then Endgame happened, Chris Evans left for other projects, and the Russos, Markus and McFeely seemed to have scrambled for a way to write out Steve. Steve’s exit seemed like an afterthought at best. As a consequence, whatever lore Peggy had in the main MCU timeline got completely thrown out. This is because Steve Rogers is a heroic paragon and his designated love interest must be above reproach. She is little more than a sexy lamp and when Captain Carter got attention in the What If... series, well she’s even more marketable now!
The thing that gets me about Peggy’s haters is the level of reaching done to justify their dislike. I’ll get to some of my critiques on how Disney/Marvel Studios handle the espionage side of the MCU (not well). But stay with me here. I need to do some comic book history.
The MCU Peggy Carter is an amalgamation of a number of love interests Steve’s had over his publication run. Earth-616 Peggy is a retcon love interest. She was introduced in 1966 after Steve’s book was essentially rebooted. Captain America was popular during WWII, but the initial post-war years weren’t kind to superhero comics. Atlas Comics (who later rebranded as Marvel Comics in 1961) tried to rebrand Steve from a Nazi puncher to a Commie smasher that went over like a lead balloon. His book was canceled in 1954 and Stan Lee and Jack Kirby revived Steve in 1964. They came up with the “on ice” backstory we saw in the TFA. The 50s Cap was explained as having been a succession of other characters acting as Steve, such as Jeffrey Mace (Patriot), William Naslund (Spirit of ‘76), and most infamously by William Burnside.
Anyway, during the 50s, Bucky got shot and was replaced by Steve’s then girlfriend, Betsy Ross (then known as Betty and later goes by the code names Agent 13 and Golden Girl). She is THE original love interest and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, published in December 1940, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. She basically did everything in the 40s comics that Peggy in the 60s (and the MCU by extension) was said to have done. The reason you’ve never heard of her is because of Betty Ross Banner - The Hulk’s main love interest. 40s Betsy got retconned into a relationship with Jeffrey Mace (one of the guys who was a retconned 50s Cap) and now lives in a retirement home.
Sharon and Peggy Carter get introduced in 1966. Sharon’s got a complicated story that we don’t have time to unpack so I’ll just say, Sharon is messy and that’s good. I think it’s good that she’s the Power Broker. Steve later dated glass-blower turned lawyer Bernie Rosenthal, who was introduced in 1980. He’s had an on/off relationship with former villainess Rachel Leighton, aka Diamondback (who was introduced in 1985). And there were romances with fellow super heroines like The Black Widow, Wasp, Rogue, and The Scarlet Witch.
Now we move onto the conspiracy theory Peggy Carter haters adore: Cynthia Glass.
Cynthia “Cindy” Glass was created in 1991 by Fabian Nicieza and Kevin Maguir for The Adventures of Captain America #1 - #4. She had four total appearances before she was killed. There was apparently a guid book for the MCU where she was mentioned as an inspiration for MCU Peggy, but I’d like to see those receipts before I make a call on the veracity of the claim. But I can see why the Peggy haters claim her as the true inspiration of MCU Peggy. Cynthia kind of looks like Hayley Atwell (if you squint) and is revealed to be a Nazi double agent who gets shot.
Look, if you don’t like a character (and maybe their actor, too), it’s fine. Just don’t fuck with them and move on, don’t make up shit about a character being a secret Nazi when there’s no actual proof. And don’t say that Cynthia Glass was Cap’s first love when she was a clear retcon that completely contradicts previously established canon regarding Betsy Ross and Peggy Carter. Especially when anyone can look up the publication history. At most MCU Peggy kind of looks like Cynthia and met Steve just before he got the serum. The decision to keep Atwell’s brown hair could easily have come down to “she looks better as a brunette.” Film production decisions are often not that deep.
Peggy Carter was probably the most convenient love interest to adapt for TFA. She doesn’t have Betsy’s name problem. Sharon needs to be established as being Peggy’s niece to explain why they look so similar. You need to justify a face-turn for Rachel. And the only people who know about Cynthia Glass are those who read the original limited run she was in during the early 90s as it looks like it wasn’t collected into a trade paperback until 2018. Again, film production devisions are not often not that deep.
So now we get to my critiques of how Disney/Marvel Studios have handled Peggy and just the spy genre in general. Spy fiction can vary wildly in terms of tone and just how heroic the protagonist is, but generally the genre leans towards a cynical world view. This is fueled by the author’s own politics, and by their own experiences if they worked in intelligence themselves (ie: John le Carré and Graham Greene). The genre also borrows heavily from hardboiled detectives (think the works of Raymond Chandler) and film noir. In any case, the protagonist is, at best, an anti-hero and sometimes a terrible one. The nature of intelligence work requires moral compromises, both in and out of fiction. If you actually look into how that world operates, it’s honestly more like organized crime backed by a nation’s treasury and given the fig leaf of respectability because you’re “fighting for a cause.”
This runs headlong into the MCU retcons when it comes to Peggy. By making SHIELD older than originally implied and putting Peggy in charge during the early days, she now has a fuck ton of skeletons in her closet. The problem is that Disney will never produce anything that is critical of the US government or could be as cynical as the spy genre demands. Yes, there was Agents of SHIELD, but that show (and I say this with love) has more in common with NCIS than The Sandbaggers or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Disney is too scared of biting the hand that feeds. They’re scared of getting cut off from Pentagon money. This is Disney’s lone fear, and it shows how toothless The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was. They just come up to the edge of valid critic, actually showing how the empire works.
Bringing this back to the problem Peggy, because the Russos, Markus and McFeely needed her to be morally pure so she could be Steve’s perfect love interest. She can’t have a past, red on her ledger, or anything that puts her into a compromised position. It’s probably why Steve goes back to 1949 and gets with Peggy before SHIELD really starts. That way, Peggy hasn’t done anything wrong. The audience is asked to forget about Zola and the HYDRA infiltration (though it’s never explained what she knew when). The Bucky situation is a bit different, and the Cynthia Glass conspiracy requires you to forget that in universe the Winter Soldier is treated as an urban legend within the intelligence community. Natasha brings up in TWS that no one can agree if he’s real. Given the few crumbs we have on Peggy’s tenure as director of SHIELD, the most I’m willing to say is that she might have know that the Winter Soldier was real. But with hindsight, I think the HYDRA infiltration was pulled off badly.
Like if I had my way, the Peggy Steve meets after he’s unfrozen would be played by an older actress like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, or the late Diana Rigg. That way she can speak for herself in the present. If I had my way, Agent Carter would have lasted longer and Peggy would have become something along the lines of DC’s Amanda Waller mixed with Dench’s M with a dash of George Smiley’s moral grounding. We could get a more accurate understanding of Peggy and SHIELD and even if you still don’t like her, she’s still a character with actual depth. And maybe Captain Carter would just be a fun “what if...” and not a free mulligan.
Cause it really feels like Disney wants to wipe the slate clean and rewrite Peggy as a morally uncomplicated heroine who can be Steve’s un-problematic girlfriend.

Captain America: Brave New World trailer reveals Red Hulk, first look at Giancarlo Esposito
Harrison Ford and Tim Blake Nelson also star in the upcoming Marvel movie.
By Nick Romano Published on July 12, 2024 09:00AM EDT
Marvel has dropped the first trailer for Cap 4 (shown above), officially titled Captain America: Brave New World, which confirms that a long-rumored comic-book baddie is making his MCU debut. The final moments of the footage reveal a shot of Red Hulk catching Cap's vibranium shield in an epic battle playing out amid the cherry blossoms of Washington, D.C.
The Captain America: Brave New World trailer also gives us our first look at Giancarlo Esposito in a mysterious villain role, which was added to the movie following fairly recent reshoots. He's shown wielding an automatic assault rifle, shooting at someone off camera.
The film continues the journey of Mackie's Sam Wilson, who assumed the mantle of Captain America after Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021). Now, Mackie headlines his own Cap movie.
Meanwhile, Harrison Ford takes over the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, following the late William Hurt. Ross is now president of the United States and tasks Sam with reconstituting the Avengers team, but everything goes awry when they uncover a sleeper-agent conspiracy.
Potential spoiler warning: In the comics, Ross is fated to become the Red Hulk when his long-held hatred of Bruce Banner leads him to become the very thing he always fought against. Of course, the MCU often plays with and remixes comic book source material in new ways, so perhaps a few surprises await.
A sneak peek screened exclusively at CinemaCon in Las Vegas first hinted that we'd be getting major Captain America: The Winter Soldier vibes. Similar to how Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) could activate Bucky Barnes' (Sebastian Stan) brainwashing in that movie, turning him back into a sleeper-agent assassin, Carl Lumbly's Isaiah Bradley (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is now one of various individuals activated by a mysterious sound that forces them to attack the president. The incident leads Sam and Ross to realize that the president's inner circle has been breached.
"It made more sense for it to be more of a grounded espionage action movie as opposed to aliens and airplanes coming through portals and s---," Mackie previously told Entertainment Weekly. "Even though I've been in so many of them and have seen it all now, the opportunity for Sam to really establish himself as a true action star and Avenger comes with this movie."
Captain America: Brave New World also features Danny Ramirez's return as Joaquin Torres, another face from the Disney+ series, destined to become the next iteration of Falcon. A shot from the trailer shows another individual wearing a Falcon flight suit soaring through the sky alongside Mackie, so we can only assume this is Joaquin.
Shira Haas will play Ruth, a member of the U.S. government, while Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson will return as Ross' daughter Betty and Samuel Sterns (a.k.a. the Leader), respectively, for the first time since their debut in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Xosha Roquemore also has a role in the film.
"This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be," Mackie told EW. "I think with these movies, you're getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier."
Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters Feb. 14, 2025. Watch the trailer above.

I started looking up an old Comedy Zone lineup this week because I was writing a biography of Andy Zaltzman and wanted to see who'd done that with him, and then I fell down a small rabbit hole, and now I've accidentally taken screenshots of the Comedy Zone blurb in every Edinburgh program for the 24 years it ran (1991-2014 - I think, 1991 was definitely the first and I couldn't find references to it in later programs) and then made a list in text of all the lineups by year. I've done things like this before and usually there is at least some sort of point to it, but in this case it really is just autism, I saw a chance to make a list and I took it. It's not for any larger thing. But it might be kind of fun to look at?
The Comedy Zone was a thing where Avalon picked a few of its new people and had them perform as a mixed bill in the middle of the night throughout the Edinburgh Festival. As far as I can tell it was very frequently people who had not done a solo Edinburgh show before that year, but would do their first one the following year, so they were about that level of new.
I find it slightly interesting that I've heard of at least one person in all those bills, two or three in most of them. All four in 2000, 2009, 2011, and 2007. The 2007 thing I know in further detail from John Robins' Chortle blogs that chronicled his Comedy Zone experience from that year. Blogs that I highly recommend reading (archives exist from July and from August) - to anyone who shares my weird interest in Edinburgh Festival comedy history with a specific focus on the 00s, or to anyone who thinks John Robins is too intense now, and you would like some perspective on how much farther it used to go.
Anyway, I'm quite sure the number of people I've heard of in that list of Comedy Zone performers is disproportionate, compared to if you took a Fringe program from any of those years, made a list of all the comedians in it who had never done a full solo Edinburgh show before that year, and then took four random people from that list. The fact that Avalon could consistently pick which new people were most likely to go on to be famous (at least, famous enough for me to have heard of them, as a person in Canada in 2024), even though none of them were famous when they were first picked, is a sign that Avalon is a really really good judge of talent, and/or that there is truth in the conspiracy that Avalon secretly runs all of television. Possibly a bit of both. (My favourite example of that theory is this video, where they say at the beginning "Reds were made up mostly of Avalon acts" - no one in that video was particularly famous when it was filmed but there is a notable discrepancy now in the levels of fame from one team to the other).
The list is kind of interesting to read as a timeline of when people really kicked off their comedy careers, so it might be worth opening the link below for that. But really, I just made a pointless list of names for no reason and wanted to do something with it so I've stuck it here.

It's been 10 years passed since @marvelstudios movie called "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" which is the second one that came out on April-4-2014 and let me tell ya: it was an AWESOME movie I've ever watched. It's about after the cataclysmic events in New York with his fellow Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye), Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), lives in the nation's capital as he tries to adjust to modern times. An attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague throws Rogers into a web of intrigue that places the whole world at risk. Joining forces with Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), aka Black Widow, and a new ally Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), aka Falcon, Rogers struggles to expose an ever-widening conspiracy, but he and his team soon come up against an unexpected enemy: the Winter Soldier aka Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Bucky Barnes is Steve Rodger's childhood best friend who has re-emerged as an enhanced brainwashed assassin by HYDRA after supposedly being killed in action during World War II in the first Captain America movie.

Episode 565 - Danny Fingeroth
With the 60th anniversary of the assassinations of JFK & Lee Harvey Oswald, Danny Fingeroth brings us the new biography, JACK RUBY: The Many Faces of Oswald's Assassin (Chicago Review Press). Danny & I talk about what drew him to tell Ruby's story, how many JFK conspiracy rabbit-holes he had to avoid, the challenges of separating Ruby's life from myth & speculation, and how the bio began as a graphic novel collaboration with Rick Geary (!) before its prose incarnation (although he's still hoping for an adaptation). We get into what he learned from talking to Ruby's rabbi, Hillel Silverstein, the figures he would have loved to interview for this book, what Ruby's siblings & their kids went through in the aftermath of Jack's moment of infamy, the circus of Ruby's murder trial and Melvin Belli's failed epilepsy defense, and the danger of treating Ruby's life like a sitcom. We also discuss Danny's dizzying résumé, including his 20-year run as a writer & editor at Marvel Comics, discovering himself as a biographer with Stan Lee: A Marvelous Life, the complexity of the (working) relationships of Lee, Jack Kirby & Steve Ditko, the surreal of experience of meeting Gabe Kaplan while promoting JACK RUBY, and more! i have an important question what media like music movies tv shows etc do you think steve robin nd eddie would b obsessed with if they got to be young in current times instead of the 80s. bc like i just Know steve would adore buffy the vampire slayer for example like i cant explain it but i Feel it
HM i think robin would like the same sort of like cool indiegirl movies she already watches like going to every single new a24 movie but they strike me as the types to find something even if it's objectively insane or not their usual kind of thing and become Obsessed with it like they would be such big brother heads to me... and like love island and all that. and survivor. steve would also watch like adam sandler and all adjacent movies he would call him adam like they're on a first name basis. robin can we please watch adam. that so fucking funny to think of god. also i think it's funny when ppl think of eddie as a potential "UGH name every SONG that's not music this is" type when ROBIN would be the most annoying person possibly on earth by virtue of all small town gay people are until she like relaxes (source: me)
i ALSO think if robin and eddie had met in school they would have realised they're both obsessed with the same kind of shitty supernatural teen shows when they were like 14 like the vampire diaries and teen wolf and shit they were 2 ships passing in the night destined to get in trouble for talking in class about why derek would even DO THAT! GOD! and YES steve also likes buffy. robin and steve watch the x files but they both secretly find it scary. robin and eddie were hardcore warrior cats percy jackson kids this one is just so true. and as for MUSIC i literally have a playlist of what steve would listen to if he was our age and it is almost exclusively like brittany spears madonna miley cyrus y2k though i do think unfortch he is the most likely to be a swiftie. robin would find like hyperpop annoying eddie would love it but would hate like 99% of pop punk. oh steve would love the disney channel even as an adult a portion of his paycheck goes to paying for it hes like these kids are just like me :) Hey Jessie :) i can picture him so clearly just laying on his couch watching sonny with a chance after a hard day of being a 20 year old employed boy..
OH i think robin would like a lot of anime and eddie who had 0 access to the internet as a kid thinks all anime is like pokémon and he's seen like 4 episodes of naruto cuz those were what were on tv so he thinks he knows everything that happens and somehow he is always sort of right and they would argue about it for 5 hours. robin would have been a one direction stan and her favourite was niall. they have a pictureboard of which celebrities they think are secretly gay or bisexual and andrew garfield has been on there ever since they watched the social network. eddie would not watch rocky horror TO ME or just bc the word reminds me any horror but he would watch like every ghost hunting show ever like unsolved and ghost files and all that also all those bigfoot alien documentaries (but not like conspiracy theories!!!) and when the upside down stuff happens he's like GOD this is just like what happened to zack. he would like comedy horror but he scared of proper horror ROBIN would watch like blair witch to calm down from a hard day.

Hiii! I’ve been reading your theories on Steve being a Skrull and now I’m literally obsessed with this idea! I agree that Secret Invasion would be the perfect time to reveal that idea but just in case they don’t, what other ways do you think they could reveal Skrull!Steve? Like the upcoming Cap movie? Thunderbolts?
hey! skrull steve / imposter steve is imo the only way that the mcu could redeem what they did to the character in endgame. years later its still hard for me to compartmentalize the steve we spent a decade getting to know versus what endgame gave us (aka ruined all character development and integrity).
while I'm at the point where I don't want to even believe that they'll ever give us closure at the risk of being further disappointed, I do think they could reveal it in projects other than secret invasion. secret invasion could hint other major players are skrulls, and then a later installment could reveal steve was one of them. while it would be interesting for this to come to play in the upcoming cap film, it is important that nothing takes away from sam being captain america-- which I think a major reveal like that would do. so personally I would prefer they continue to hint that old!steve might not be who they say he is, and save the big reveal for another film

And there are a few more things
-here they keep breaking the rules and they think they're powerful and they get a smackdown and they don't see it and they hear about it and can't remember it and it's terrible so we have to physically stop them and we have to do it now so we're moving in because the court cases are causing them to be heated up
-we have one more day and Pluto starts to disappear and the stone chips are not up and there aren't any up of theirs and it is sitting there so we figured out something it's probably a conspiracy to stop our projects from proceeding and we heard it too they said we're in the way and we don't care then it's like this once it disappears the project will start and then fight each other at that time so they got the message and did nothing
-we are making progress some people want to use this ruse to try and take ships and people in the way are saying you're going to screw us all and it's going on and it said what do we do Tommy f is going to go up anyways and they said they might not be until after Pluto and Mars and then they said this we don't think so and the truck starting to fight over it and their women are disgusting cuz they're so dumb
-there's a huge number of people that hate Garth and his sister is one of them because he's so dumb the ships are not adequate for almost anything cuz they're too small and they are going to get hurt through this dumb job that you can't do the job and you can't not do the job and a lot of people want to hit him and they're trying to they're going to go away
-another huge thing happening here today is that these pseudo empire has ordered stand to fix the place and he says it's my place and I do what they want but then he says I'll let people know you're telling me to because I should probably fix it they heard him say that then I heard him say it at home it is not going to do anything and now that they told him to he'll never do it so they said that you're out and you're contingent is small and annoying you're trying to take from us all the time Stan has no cloning left and he has like 100 million ships and that's it and lost most of his bases. Soon he will be out and out of Charlotte county mack Daddy hates him and Biden doesn't like him cuz he's trying for his job I mean Jesus. There's a whole bunch of stuff happening but this is important that Stan has decided to go against their order and they want to see if he's blowing Steve and does it do testing but really it's ridiculous what they're doing here
-I'm going to polish it's important
Thor Freya
Olympus they're not suing stand yet but these pseudo empire might start doing it if he continues pulling his stupid s*** is what they said they're doing testing today. Also the fecal matter in the river and the harbor is down 2 ft and there's 8 ft left in the harbor and 7 ft in the river and about 3 ft in the canals the total depth at low tide is about 59 in and it's way down for what it was right now at midnight it's like 23 in and that's really when the water starts hitting is not true it's high tide and that's really where it is at high tide but okay and it's going to start raining like madness shortly they're going to evacuate for real out of the Midwest I've been sitting out there trying to take stuff they start losing last night and losing stuff they have a giant number of ships and they're going to move out all at once fairly soon and they're going to try and evacuate their people fully and they will destroy the South they're going to start today they said moving the ships at 11:00 a.m. all day long it finally 7:00 p.m. the big ones will come out and it will cause havoc in the south and they'll say they'll try and kidnap our son and bring it to the UK to open up their gift and he's a fool and a loser and it's not a gift he's a f** for falling for it and yeah you're a troglodyte Tommy Allen hello life and a low level and low IQ nobody and you fell for it and we need someone to sit there that's all you're doing you're so stupid you can't figure anything out I can't even figure out a computer program
