Academic Articles that Analyze Queer Readings of Batman and Robin (Brudick)

There actually exist multiple!…but the ones I want to introduce right now talk specifically about how the creation of the batfamily was DC’s attempt to dissuade brudick readings. and that it can be argued that DC is still doing the same thing today.

The first article is called “All in the Family: Homophobia and Batman Comics in the 1950s”, published in the International Journal of Comics Art in Fall 2000 by Chris York. It was not available for free online, but I bought a digital copy of the volume it was published in and provided screenshots because it’s been 24 years and I hate the fact that academics are behind paywalls so I’m sharing.

This article was actually infamous because DC refused to grant permission for the use of their panels in this article.

Crocodylia, commonly known as “crocodilians”, is our first order of archosaurs. Only three families remain: Alligatoridae (“alligators” and “caimans”), Gavialidae (the “Gharial” and “False Gharial”), and Crocodylidae (“crocodiles”).

The fact that the alligator ends its brumation when the rainy season begins and returns to its burrows when the rainwater in rivers recedes, as well as the fact that it lives in bodies of water, may be the reason for the dragon's portrayal as a water-related mythological creature.

The Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger) is the largest living alligatorid, with a maximum length of around 5 to 6 m (16 to 20 ft) and a mass of over 450 kg (1,000 lb). They are the apex predators of the Amazon, taking prey as large as Domestic Horses and Cattle, and have a bite force sufficient to shatter a turtle shell. Even Jaguars (Panthera onca), who sometimes prey on smaller caiman species, avoid large adult Black Caimans.

The Miocene Purussaurus brasiliensis was a giant caiman once native to South America. It is often regarded as one of, if not the, largest crocodilians to ever exist, with a 145.3 cm (4.8 ft) long skull. A 2022 study estimated a length of 7.6–9.2 metres (25–30 ft) and a mass of 2–6.2 metric tons (2.2–6.8 short tons), based on the body proportions of related caimans.

While most crocodilian fathers are not involved in child-rearing, sometimes even posing a threat to hatchlings, dominant male Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) (image 2) do actively participate in protecting and guarding their young. One captive male Gharial was observed to show high interest in hatchlings and was allowed by the female to carry the hatchlings on his back.

The West African Crocodile (Crocodylus suchus), once thought to be synonymous with the larger, more aggressive Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), was finally given species distinction in 2003, and only received wider recognition as a valid species in 2011. Ancient Egyptian priests were aware of the difference between the two species, according to Herodotus, with the West African Crocodile being smaller and more docile, making it easier to catch and tame. In Sobek's temple in Arsinoe, a crocodile was kept in the pool of the temple, where it was fed, covered with jewelry, and worshipped. When the crocodiles died, they were embalmed, mummified, placed in sarcophagi, and then buried in a sacred tomb. Herodotus also indicated that some Egyptians kept these crocodiles as pampered pets.

Mauritanian traditional peoples who live in close proximity to West African Crocodiles revere them and protect them from harm. This is due to their belief that, just as water is essential to crocodiles, so crocodiles are essential to the water, which would permanently disappear if they were not there to inhabit it. Here the crocodiles live in apparent peace with the humans, and are not known to attack swimmers.

The Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) (image 4) is the largest living crocodilian, and the largest living reptile. Male Saltwater Crocodiles can grow up to a weight of 1,000–1,500 kg (2,200–3,300 lb) and a length of 6 m (20 ft), rarely exceeding 6.3 m.

The critically endangered Cuban Crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) (see gif above) is known to be highly intelligent, engaging in pack hunting behavior and learning to perform tricks. They are the most terrestrial of the living crocodilians, with reduced webbing on the hind feet and no webbing on the front feet. Once found across the Caribbean, the Cuban Crocodile has been hunted almost to extinction, and can now only be found in Cuba's Zapata Swamp and Isla de la Juventud.

Several species of crocodilian are sold as exotic pets. As they grow larger, pet owners are often unable to meet their expensive diet, space, and lighting requirements, resulting in unhealthy, stunted, and/or deformed crocodilians. Pet crocodilians are often abandoned or released, either resulting in their suffering and death or becoming invasive.

These crocodilians are threatened due to overhunting for their hides, habitat degradation and loss, unsustainable fishing practices, poaching for the pet trade, the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and other forms of pollution.

The UN's Official Mission report on Hamas' Sexual Violence in Israel was published

Credible circumstantial information, which may be indicative of some forms of sexual violence, including genital mutilation, sexualized torture, or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, was also gathered. 22

With regards to the hostages, the mission team found clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing.

The mission team was unable to establish the prevalence of sexual violence and concludes that the overall magnitude, scope, and specific attribution of these violations would require a fully-fledged investigation. A comprehensive investigation would enable the information base to be expanded in locations which the mission team was not able to visit and to build the required trust with survivors/victims of conflict-related sexual violence who may be reluctant to come forward at this point.

Regarding the occupied Palestinian Territory, while its scope did not extend to verification, the mission team received information from institutional and civil society sources as well as through direct interviews, about some forms of sexual violence against Palestinian men and women in detention settings, during house raids and at checkpoints. Though the mission team did not visit Gaza, the Office of the SRSG-SVC will continue to monitor the situation for any relevant allegations of CRSV in the context of the ongoing hostilities. The relevant UN entities present in the occupied Palestinian Territory will provide UN-verified information for reporting to the Security Council on allegations of CRSV, which will be complemented by the information obtained by the mission team.

VI. Recommendations

The mission team makes the following recommendations: a) Continue to encourage the Government of Israeli to grant, without further delay, access to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, to carry-out fully-fledged investigations into all alleged violations that would deepen the preliminary findings contained in the present report. b) Urge Hamas and other armed groups to immediately and unconditionally release all individuals held in captivity and to ensure their protection including from sexual violence, in line with international law. c) Call on all relevant and competent bodies, national and international, to bring all perpetrators, regardless of rank or affiliation, to justice based on individual, superior and command responsibility, in accordance with due process of law and fair trial standards. d) Encourage the Government of Israel to consider signing a Framework of Cooperation with the Office of the SRSG-SVC to strengthen capacity on justice and accountability for CRSV crimes as well as security sector engagement, training, and oversight to prevent and address CRSV. 23 e) Strengthen the capacity of the United Nations to monitor and report on incidents, patterns and trends of CRSV in both Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory through the establishment of the Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Arrangements on CRSV (MARA), convened by dedicated technical specialists, namely Women’s Protection Advisors (WPAs), deployed to the region to ensure prevention, protection and coordinated multi-sectoral assistance to survivors/victims. f) Encourage relevant actors to uphold information integrity and ethical, trauma-informed representations of conflict-related sexual violence, including by respecting and safeguarding the dignity and identity of survivors/victims and witnesses of sexual violence, as sensationalizing headlines, media pressure and scrutiny, exposure of identity, political instrumentalization and pressure, and/or fear of reprisal can result in the suppression, silencing and discrediting of survivors/victims and witnesses, further compound trauma and increase the risk of social stigmatization. g) Urge all parties to the conflict to adopt a humanitarian ceasefire, and to ensure that expertise on addressing conflict-related sexual violence informs the design and implementation of all ceasefire and political agreements and that the voices of women and affected communities are heard in all conflict resolution and peacebuilding processes....."

Hamas rejected another ceasefire deal.

Multiple big accounts on here and across other social media, as well as major news stations, were celebrating and pushing the narrative that Hamas had accepted due to them “welcoming the UNSC’s vote on a ceasefire”.

But just because they “welcomed” the vote does not mean they accepted a deal in any capacity. Saying otherwise is not only misleading, but an example of propaganda.

Let me give you an example;

Imagine you go into an interview for a new job. The description says that is pays 100k a year, has 6 weeks of vacation, and parental leave. You nail the interview and they verbally confirm the pay and benefits that are in the description. You go through onboarding and they say they'll give you the paperwork to sign at the end. You receive the paperwork and instead of the aforementioned pay and perks it says that you will only get 50k a year, have 2 weeks vacation, and no parental leave. You'd be rightfully upset, call them out on the bait and switch, and refuse to sign the paperwork.

Right? They wasted your time and mislead you.

They were never going to give you what you wanted or what they said they would. They were relying upon you investing your time and not wanting to have wasted it, so you'd therefore accept anything they gave you.

That’s what is happening here. Mediators work with Israel and Hamas to negotiate a deal that both will potentially accept. Israel accepts the deal and Hamas says it does as well. Except while Hamas says it accepts the deal they send a counter offer with different terms. So when Israel then rejects the new proposal because it contains things they did not agree to, Hamas and its allies/supporters/mouthpieces attack Israel for “rejecting” a deal it said it had “accepted”.

Does any of this sound like a reasonable way to negotiate the end of hostilities?

Why aren't you including extinct birds? Partly because I am only including birds that have photos, but mostly because there are already so, so many birds.

Our next order of paleognath birds are the Rheiformes, commonly called “rheas”. It contains one living family, Rheidae, and one living genus with two species: the “Greater Rhea” or “American Rhea” (Rhea americana) (image 1) and the “Lesser Rhea” or “Darwin's Rhea” (Rhea pennata) (image 2).

Like most other paleognaths, rheas are large and flightless with long legs and long necks. They have fluffy, tattered-looking plumage that is gray or brown. Their wings are large for a flightless bird and are spread out while running, to act like sails. When in danger, they flee in a zigzag fashion, using one wing after the other, similar to a rudder. Unlike many other birds, they only have three toes. Rheas are mainly herbivorous and prefer broad-leafed plants, but they also eat fruits, seeds, roots, and animals such as insects, small reptiles, and rodents. Living rheas are only from South America and are limited within the continent to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. They live in open grasslands, the pampas, and chaco woodlands.

During the non-breeding season rheas may form flocks of between 10 and 100 birds, although the Lesser Rhea usually forms smaller flocks. These flocks will feed alongside deer and cattle. During the breeding season, the flocks break up, with males attempting to attract females with a loud, booming call, running short distances, and waving his neck back and forth. Rheas are polygynandrous, with males courting between two and twelve females and females commonly mating with multiple dominant males during the breeding season. After mating, the male builds a nest where each female will lay her eggs. The nest is a simple scrape in the ground, lined with grass and leaves. It was right there, on their website. For all to see. Evidence that a major American news outlet — one with prestige, resources, and supposedly rigorous editorial standards — had quietly published, almost word-for-word, what can only be described as a press release from a designated terrorist organization.

Earlier this month, CBS News ran a story about an alleged Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza. The headline set the tone: “Israeli strike on Gaza school allegedly kills 31 Palestinians, many kids, but IDF says it hit Hamas.”

Already, the usual red flags: a suspiciously specific death toll, immediate emphasis on children among the casualties, and of course, the requisite skepticism toward the IDF’s explanation — all paired with the now-standard framing of an aggressive Israel recklessly targeting civilians, rather than Hamas.

According to CBS, the death toll was sourced from the “Civil Defense rescue agency in Gaza,” which in turn cited medical records from Al-Ahli Hospital — the same hospital that, just days after CBS published its report, was revealed to contain a Hamas operations center inside the facility. That’s right: inside the hospital. Just to give you an idea of the reliability of the sources CBS deems fit to cite.

And yet, rather than question the reliability of medical records emerging from a Hamas-controlled war zone — or pause to consider the well-documented strategy of placing multiple command centers in civilian institutions — CBS instead cast doubt on the IDF. Why? Because the IDF had issued similar warnings the day before, when targeting a different Hamas site. Apparently, the editorial team at CBS finds it hard to believe that a terror group that has ruled Gaza with an iron grip for nearly two decades might operate more than one military facility embedded in civilian infrastructure.

We know. Shocking. Almost as if tunnel networks, human shields, and base duplication are all part of Hamas’ war strategy.

But the real giveaway came in a line CBS quietly scrubbed from its article after publication — with no correction, no note, no admission. The line that read:

The death toll of the Israeli aggression has risen to 50,609 martyrs.

Yes, really. “Martyrs.” And “Israeli aggression.” Directly lifted from Hamas propaganda.

At some point, a CBS journalist hit Ctrl+C on that phrasing and dropped it straight into a news story — no quotation marks, no attribution, no context. Just presented as plain, unqualified fact.

This is how warped coverage of Israel’s war with Hamas has become: ideologically blinkered or just plain lazy reporters sourcing claims from the most biased actors in the region and piping them directly into American living rooms under the banner of “journalism.”

We’ve seen it before. HonestReporting has documented how outlets like UPI routinely republish Hamas talking points. The BBC, The Guardian, NPR — all have quoted Hamas press officers and “health ministry” officials as if they were neutral observers rather than representatives of a proscribed terrorist organization.

This is how distortion becomes doctrine. This is how Hamas’ narrative — complete with inflated death tolls, blood-soaked victimhood, and cartoon-villain depictions of Israel — spreads far beyond Gaza’s borders.

When Western news outlets start parroting the language of groups banned in their own countries, it’s not just a lapse in editorial judgment. It’s complicity.

now. for those of you unfamiliar. Radio Free Asia is basically a US propaganda organ that masks its intentions by attempting to appear objective.

although many will suggest that they no longer have direct affiliation with the CIA, and that may be true, it does not change the fact that they are funded by the US government and have been spreading blatant lies with literally no source to their extremely over the top claims for many years.

that being said, these perpetual lies happen to include misinfo regarding China's versions of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Some of the RFA articles reviewed lacked key context in describing purported issues with Chinese-made vaccines. This could enable the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation at a time when research suggests that exposure to online misinformation about vaccines can increase rates of vaccine hesitancy.  In one example, a November 10 article on RFA’s Cantonese website, headlined “Clinical trial of Chinese vaccine halted in Brazil after causing serious incident,” lacked important context from local authorities. A serious incident had indeed occurred: the death of a participant in a local trial of the Sinovac vaccine. But Reuters reported November 9 that the death had been deemed a suicide and that an official had denied any link to the vaccine, a detail not noted in RFA’s article.  The article, presented as a news story, also contained editorial comment dismissing China’s approach to vaccines. “This accident not only renews criticism of the ‘Great Leap Forward’-style of vaccine research and development, but also presents a serious setback for China, which is devoting all of its resources to this Covid-19 vaccine competition,”  the first paragraph reads. RFA continued to describe the trial’s suspension as owing to “severe adverse effects,” not mentioning the participant’s reported cause of death, in at least two subsequent articles.

A key part of the strategy: amplify the disputed contention that, because vaccines sometimes contain pork gelatin, China’s shots could be considered forbidden under Islamic law. The military program started under former President Donald Trump and continued months into Joe Biden’s presidency, Reuters found – even after alarmed social media executives warned the new administration that the Pentagon had been trafficking in COVID misinformation. The Biden White House issued an edict in spring 2021 banning the anti-vax effort, which also disparaged vaccines produced by other rivals, and the Pentagon initiated an internal review, Reuters found.
