A Magnus (Protocol) By Any Other Name…

…will be just as horrifying.

Well, it’s time for me to dust off the corkboard, unravel some fresh red yarn, and cook up some new incredibly wrong but passionate theories. First one is bouncing off some key points:

1) The Magnus Protocol’s logo is composed of certain alchemic symbols, chiefly a version of the sign involved with creating the Philosopher’s Stone; the catalyst for riches and the Elixir of Life’s gift of immortality.

Especially tasty to consider, what with the first episode introducing us to poor Red Canary who discovered the ruins of the Magnus Institute were host to some strange symbols of its own inside.

2) A fellow by the name of Saint Albertus Magnus was kicking around in the 1200s and, like that famous French scribe Nicolas Flamel, he got a hefty posthumous reputation for having been a great alchemist on top of being a philosopher and scientist.

What does this add up to? First, I want to look at identity possibilities when it comes to who the Magnus(es) in question might be here.

Theory A: Jonah Magnus was part of a lineage with an itch to chase the more-than-earthly and, naturally, immortality. If not a direct descendant, then a sibling or cousin line. Can’t say Albertus would be jumping to congratulate the bastard for his ‘success story.’

Theory B: With apologies to the actual Albertus, maybe Jonah is that original alchemic Magnus. Or at least he wore the guy once upon a time and kept the surname. Maybe he fudged the ye olde records some centuries back. Death records, life records, whether or not old Al ran into some unsavory character with unpleasant gray eyes…

Theory C: Circles a bit back to A, in that Jonah wasn’t the only one in his family tree poking around supernatural and supernal forces. Assuming Jonah existed as himself at all in this place. Someone or something else might have been running this world’s Magnus Institute before it was roasted. While the current assumption is that the cast of characters we knew in The Magnus Archives might exist within TMP’s universe as themselves, we don’t have all the pieces yet.

Fun stuff!

But oh. Oh boy. I am chewing apart the implications of the main logo and the ‘protocol’ like an excited dog. Specifically, the possible implications of the Philosopher’s Stone symbol visible in the logo not being this…

…but this.

The sign is inverted. Which shouldn’t mean much, right? All the other little symbols chilling in there are right side up, what’s the big deal?

The same kind of deal that we see in the difference between a pentacle, associated with magic and pagan faiths in various forms:

And a pentagram, associated point blank with outright devilish and demonic dabbling:

Or, if you’re up on your Tarot, you know that there’s a world of difference between getting your card right-side up (delivering on the image’s classic meaning) versus flipping it to see the picture inverted (the opposite of the original intent).

So what does that mean for the TMP’s symbol, the same stamp which we might assume the Office of Incident, Assessment and Response has on their workplace? My guess: This is the insignia of a force or founder who put the ‘protocol’ in The Magnus Protocol. A foundation based on actively opposing what they took to be forces of a classically alchemic and/or infernal nature rather than the cosmic horrors we know the Fears as.

The Enemy is using these powers to evil ends. The Enemy is made of monsters. The Enemy includes Jonah Magnus, the spoiled offshoot of Albertus Magnus. Our sign is the opposition to his and others’ vicious quest.

Or suchlike.

In the style of Gertrude Robinson, the original person or persons behind the Protocol and our main characters’ Office appears to have hit upon a ‘fight fire with fire’ reaction to the Fears. We see how Alice, a veteran employee of the Office, displays a strong insistence on categorizing its statements very, very loosely, and actively not prying into deeper research in the way a place wholly possessed by the Eye would encourage. She’s seen people go strange upon following the lure of weirdness; but she knows from experience that the Office can be worked in jovially enough, sans side effects. The implication being that Colin is sprinting down that rabbit hole, poor dude.

If the OIAR is of the Eye, it is also against the Eye. Against all Fears, even as it absorbs statements of their actions. Feeding its patron while also cutting back the portions by way of not being too careful about the filing or the tasty background research. If the Eye is present at all in the Office, then it is settling for granola bars versus Jonah Magnus’ offered banquets.

Which all comes back to the question of:

If Jonah Magnus founded the Institute here, who is responsible for the OIAR?

My pet favorite is the ‘one who got away’ as far as Jonah’s classic 19th century days went—one Dr. Jonathan Fanshawe who got an eyeful of a victim’s blinking innards and broke ties with Magnus like they were pretzel sticks. We never do find out what became of him afterward.

His last written words to Jonah ran:

Nothing stood in the way of my retreat, and I dragged Albrecht’s body back as far as the coach. We left that awful place, and I have endeavored most acutely to forget the route. Before he was buried, I was able to secure permission to do an autopsy. I had some thought as to discovering the cause of his sudden, violent passing. Do I need to tell you what I found, Jonah? Do I need to detail what covered his organs, his bones, the inside of his skin? What clustered together in their dozens, and all turned as one to focus on me as I opened his chest, their pupils constricting in the light, with irises of every hue and color? Because whatever it was that did this to him, I know in my heart that it is your fault. I have had the body burned. Please do not write to me again. Your obedient servant, Doctor Jonathan Fanshawe.

You can feel the polite antique ice on that goodbye. Just as we can read here, and glean from his full letter, that the whole experience surrounding poor Albrecht is one he actively wishes he could forget. To not examine. And, of course, there’s the baited hook of Jonathan Sims’ next lines after reading the letter aloud:

Statement ends. (sigh) Disconcerting to find my namesake in a statement, especially one connected so directly to the Institute. I can only hope breaking faith with Jonah Magnus didn’t go too badly for him.

I can’t think of a better ironic hell for the good doctor than to find himself the abrupt focus of the Eye all over again. Especially when the meat of the letter-statement involves this scene:

“I had them rebound last year,” he said. “Damp can do terrible things to a book.” I told him I was certain that that was the case, but I must insist we talk about his health. Again he ignored me. Instead, he took the seat opposite me and started to tell me a story. And then another. And another. A stream of strange tales began to pour out of him, and I just sat there, transfixed, desperately wishing I had the strength of will to leave, but all I could do was listen. He told me of a seamstress, who laced her body with fine black thread, and when she pulled it all out in a single swift motion, her skin dropped away like a loose shift. He told me of a man so scared to die he spent a year weaving a rope blindfolded, so he would not know the length, and could not foresee the moment it would tighten around his neck when he finally threw himself into the void. He told me of a fire that burns so hot and fierce that to even know about it is enough to burn a man’s tongue from his head. He told me so many terrible things.

And at the end of it all, the only thing I could think to ask him was where he read them. My eyes darted to the books that surrounded us, but Albrecht laughed at this, and placed his hands across a spine that was simply labeled ‘A Warning.’ For a moment, he looked as though he were about to wrench it from its place and hurl it into the fire. But it passed. He turned back to me. “You do not understand,” he said to me in German. “I do not read the books. They read me.”

Isn’t that something? A crossing of paths with the Eye that wasn’t just inflicting its Stare upon him through a victim or an avatar, but effectively pinning Dr. Fanshawe in the role of the unhappily avid audience, however briefly. Forced to absorb a litany of horrors as another Jonathan would so many years later. Good foundation for someone who, upon discovering the insidious supernatural Powers That Be were not about to leave him alone, would try his best to turn that force into something to use against the monsters. A habit among Archivists who’ve had Jonah Magnus inflicted on them.

Assuming it is Fanshawe at the roots here, the act of designing a symbol centered on inverting the Philosopher’s Stone sigil makes sense. Cosmic and eldritch horror wasn’t really on the table for that era. But the demonic and the arcane were. As were, we can assume, history books to do with famous old Albertus Magnus and his possible connection to Jonah ‘Wants to Be an Immortal All-Powerful Specialboy’ Magnus. Whether it’s Dr. Fanshawe behind the OIAR’s inception or not, having it be somebody from Jonah Magnus’ early days works out—they would assume the bogeymen at work were merely hellish, nothing broader.   

Plus, there’s just plain narrative convenience to consider. ‘19th century guy knows Magnus is up to shit with his Institute. Gets suspicious. Gets avatar’d against his will. Gets proactive about it. Named Jonathan, good for a bait-and-switch down the line.’

But, I could obviously be 1000% wrong, as per usual with ¾ of my Magnus-flavored theories. It could be someone or something entirely unrelated, though I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Fanshawe. Especially when I stop to think about how very fond the Fears are of avatars who play hard to get, forcing their essence and power on those who want it least.

Humanity finds itself alive and well on the planet of Lunestia! With its gorgeous greens, purples, pinks, and white fields it is definitely different than Earth but almost eerily the same. After the legendary forum wars of 2025, aliens have fully become a part of society on Earth as well as Lunestia. Great advancements in not only technology but human evolution have improved life in the universe more than any being could imagine!

I fell in love with Risa's Lunestia and Meroze maps as soon as I saw them! It was really hard to choose between those two to use for this space world save but Lunestia's beautiful terrain painting and blend won me over! I highly recommend both of these worlds, absolutely gorgeous and incredible work!

Mae, Malie, and Una Verse keep watch over the renovated remains of the First Contact ship that brought all beings to beautiful Lunestia! Although thankful for the great honor bestowed upon them from their ancestors, these young beings just want to have some fun, sometimes!

The Goth family and Bachelor family fell into a wormhole in Sunset Valley and have found themselves farther in the future than they could even imagine!

Candy is a plantsim who is trying her very best to recreate all of the lovely plants from Earth! She lives in her underground lab and you can find her there or above ground tending to all of her lovely friends…uh plants!

Skyla Martial is a genius who has filled her home with bots that she treats like family but never stopped to wonder if she wants an actual family. Either way, the bots fill that void…for now.

The MotherShip by Snowmoon is a little more inviting for the locals in Lunestia. The Darts Competition is weekly, see you there!

It wasn't long after Lunestia was discovered that the Space Buzz Studio by Hidehi was built! You can always see some of the actors rehearsing on stages upstairs if you stop by to tour the studio rabbithole (in the basement).

Crater Lagoon is the town fishing spot stocked with all fish and not too far from there you will find Oasis Shoreline Beach!

Don't forget to visit the crash scene wreckage! It might look like a junkyard but very important research is being done here. You can see the renovated First Contact ship from here as well!

In this download, you will find the world and 3 save files:

LunestiaCommunityLots - this save has the community lots only, no residential houses or other lots

LunestiaUnpopulated - the is the final version of the save without sims

LunestiaPopulated - this is the final version of the save with all households

This save uses Into The Future, Lunar Lakes, and all sci fi store content extensively but there is zero custom content. I have all expansions, all stuff packs, and all store content but if you do not have some of the items, the game will generate a similar item for you (but you may have to edit). The only expansion not used is PETS so I am unsure how the save will perform with Pets, but there is definitely plenty of room for them!

Because this world was just roads and trees, I ran into the same problem I had with Simarellen, which was sometimes the lots do not line up perfectly with the roads. Some of the lots may look diagonal or incorrectly placed because of that but I have playtested everything and have not found any routing issues. This world save does use the Into The Future elevators profusely so there might be an issue with some of the elevators not working as intended. To fix this, simply go into build mode on the lot, go to the ground floor of the lot, use the hand tool to pick up the elevator and then drop it, this will reset the elevators to go to the correct floors. I tried not to fill the world up with lots too much, but it was hard to choose with so many excellent options out there! You can always add more, if you like!

So in the Monkey King and the Infant AU, Guanyin and Iron Fan are sisters right?

What was their relationship like? And how did Guanyin feel about Red Son being taken from Iron Fan?

Would Guanyin put up much resistance to Iron Fan trying to take her son back or would she just kinda let it happen? It's Iron Fan's kid afterall.

It's... complicated.

I did try to draft up a rough Royal Family Tree a while back, and Guanyin/Songzi is listed as one of the Jade Emperor and Xiwangmu's daughters, aka Iron Fan's older sister.

You see Guanyin isn't biologically related to the Jade Imperial Family.

But her soul is.

Let me explain.

Guanyin/Kuan Yin is the current incarnation of the First Jade Princess Songzi - the eldest child of the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother of the West.

Whilst studying under Bixia Yuanjun, the Goddess of Birth and Destiny, Songzi realised that she was disatisfied with her heavenly existence, and longed to experience the cycle of mortal life and death her teacher spoke of.

Then one day Zhinu the Seventh Princess; would abandon her cushy life in the Celestial Realm to be with a human man. Only for the Jade Emperor and his wife to tear the happy couple apart by literally splitting the skies open so that they could never meet. Zhinu and her husband and children were forced to become cosmic castaways in order to escape Heaven's authority.

Songzi had lost her then-youngest sister all because she loved someone.

So one day, Songzi decided to no longer eat the Peaches or drink the Wine. Many fights were had between her and her family over the matter, with them even trying to force her to consume an Elixir of Immortality just to lengthen her time.

Until one day, Songzi passed on. The details are unclear.

The Celestial Realms quaked with the sorrow that overtook the royal family for thousands of years to come.

Songzi would reincarnate many times in the proceding years. Sometimes as an animal, an asura, a mortal man, or in the case of Miao Shan; a human princess. And each time, she would choose mercy over violence or spite.

As Miao Shan, she refused to marry and instead became a buddhist nun/healer, much to the distaste of her father Miaozhuang Wang. He would then execute Miao Shan for defying him/having powers that scared tf out of him, but she still forgave him and her executioner. Even while staying in a layer of Naraka/Hell, Miao Shan managed to alleviate the pain and torment of those around her - so much so that King Yama the God of Hell kicked her out. (Bonus lore detail+ Miao Shan is frequently associated with Tigers and lions during her tale, which is the celestial animal of Xiwangmu...)

The now-revived Miao Shan would spend many years meditating and helping out lost fisherman while chilling on Fragrant Mountain/Southern Seas. Until one day she heard that her King bio-dad was dying, and that the eyes and arms of a pure being could cure him - so she offered up her own. In this great act of forgiveness she became Guanyin.

The Celestial Realm noticed this and upon recieving confirmation of who she once was; wanted Guanyin to immediately return to Heaven and retake her position as the First Jade Princess.

However, Guanyin realised that she couldn't just leave earth behind while there was still so much mortal sufferring that she could heal. So she became Bodhisattva so that she may still act directly with mortals and the Buddha.

All the Jade Emperor and Xiwangmu can do is sigh with both frustration and resignation. Thats their eldest daughter for you.

From Heaven's perspective, it's a lot like the "Steven isn't Pink Diamond, but kinda?" situation in Steven Universe. The Celestials don't 100% understand that reincarnation isn't a direct copy-paste; Guanyin isn't Songzi anymore, though she still holds her soul and her powers. If she ever truly wanted, she could become next in line for the throne.

A similar situation happens later with Lady Yin - Nezha's mother, who reincarnated as a human woman and decided to stay that way even as her husband and sons become Gods/Celestials in their own rights. Nezha is in turn considered *legally* the grandchild of the Jade Emperor, despite not having a genetic link to him.

Princess Tieshan/"Iron Fan" was born shortly after all these deaths occurred, becoming the youngest out of all of the royal daughters. She grew up hearing how perfect her missing sisters were. All perfect except for that One Little Thing that caused them to lose their place in Heaven and by-proxy; their parents love. These harsh warnings and lessons to never let her emotions rule her decisions, accidentally led Iron Fan to fall for a demon who wore his heart on his sleeve - the Demon Bull King.

As for how Guanyin felt about Red Son being taken from his parents? She felt bad honestly - but she thought that he would cause so much more damage if he was allowed to run around undiciplined. And being legally First Princess, she was allowed to make the decision for his "punishment" when the toddler Red Son did something that greatly angered/terrified the gods...

As for Iron Fan coming to pick Red up from the Southern Sea? Guanyin is literally like; "Ok sure. I'm glad you're taking initiative again. I made sure Red didn't age so you two could make up for lost parent-child time. Call me if you need anything."

Princess Iron Fan really isn't sure how to react around Guanyin. The Bodhisattva may have the soul of her eldest sister - but she acts like a younger one to her (as Miao Shan was the youngest of three), and is a neutral party in the debate of Heaven vs Everyone Else. So the best PIF can do is call her Red's "auntie" and not elaborate on the details.

One of my mutuals @dorothygale123 has been reading through chinese mythology, and was the one to open the door for me on the Guanyin origin story. I've been looking through different articles, and have decided "tired reincarned goddess" is my au's interpetation of Guanyin.

Okay, so, wild speculation time but: I think Nashi could appear in Duskmourn: House of Horror. Like, in a major role.

Now, I, obviously, do not wish harm upon Tamiyo's beloved ratperson son, but also I think there are a bunch of factors that make it make sense for this to happen. [Edit to add: uh wait hang on we got some Duskmourn art in the [admittedly too long] I spent writing this?! Really?!]

Like, enough that I'm going to stick a "read more" in here.

Anyway, to start off: Wizards probably does need some established characters to Experience the Horrors. Like, there's the idea of horror as corrupted familiarity - already-known characters can be a source of said familiarity. It's why all those Pokémon creepypastas exist[1]. Also every set has at least some tie, at the very least thematically, to the larger plot (yes even Zendikar Rising). This, obviously, doesn't necessarily mean Nashi, specifically, has to be there, but it is relevant context for all the rest of this.

Nashi is teen-coded [I do not know quite how old he's meant to be, and him being a Nezumi might complicate it, but he is still A Teen in every important respect]. Now, I am no Modern Horror Expert (tm), but a lot of those stories do focus on teen characters and... in terms of the present timeline we have Nashi, Kellan and. Uh. Shadowblayde-with-a-y? Like there are not that many Teen characters, especially with the recent timeskips. Like, Rat might technically be 19 at the youngest now. And, speaking of Rat, well, with apologies to her fans, I think we're still close enough to War of the Spark for Wizards to be nervous about introducing a new character to be the token teenager [in the main story. There might be other Teenaged Horror Protag/Victim creature cards in there].

Nashi also just starred in a story in a set with 43 other Legendary Creatures [not including Commander exclusives, or Loot], despite not getting a card himself. This might just be because Wizards let Akemi Dawn Bowman write whatever for her OTJ side-story, but there might well be a reason they brought Nashi back here. (I mean, it's a good story, and sometimes Side Stories are just there, but I'm assuming relevance for the sake of argument.)

"A Long Way From Home" further established Nashi's power as cameras - indeed, his entire thing as telling stories through cameras. The very limited information we have for Duskmourn includes the set logo. Which has freaking scanlines. Also cameras and found footage and people attempting to record the horrors for posterity are all modern horror staples [I would do a list but it would get long]. Again, Nashi is the clearest link to these tropes 'normally', and he's just about reckless enough that him getting involved doesn't seem particularly OOC.

Finally, Nashi uses his OP camera powers to steal an "elixir" described thusly: "The liquid was deep red and unmistakably metallic. There was no writing on the bottle, but Nashi's nostrils flared when he picked up its scent. The magic was abhorrently pungent, and the stench made his eyes water.".

I don't think anyone has managed to ID this incredibly suspicious potion. He presumably went ahead and drank this stuff, or otherwise still has it. I would not be surprised if it actually had some ties to the horror plane/plane horror and drinking this mysterious red liquid is part of how you end up on/in Duskmourn (like, it has the urban legend feel to it, and the power, or other desired thing, at an extreme and unpredictable price implemented by an almost cosmic force is also a big horror thing that falls outside of the Innistrad remit). Like this is pure speculation, to be clear, but it also really fits the vibe imo.

SUPER DUPER BONUS POINT

Kaito confirmed for Duskmourn! I mean. Kaito was mentioned in Nashi's story, because Nashi still has very complex feelings about the "Kaito didn't save my mom" thing. So it's a point in favour! But also, like, I feel as if Nashi would be in that type of art if he was appearing, so...

This is Sejant (his name’s supposed to be kinda ironic, since he travels around a lot and. never touches the ground)! He’s a giant cosmic bat who carries around a lot of tonics and elixirs (a good chunk of which are scented ones he use on himself lol). He’s pretty friendly, but in like. a rlly assertive way.

If he were animated in the ENA style, he’d probably emerge like smoke from his purple triangle-wing-things, and the star/nebula pattern would be stay still while his outline moves, like they’re separate (I hope I’m describing it well enough so you can glean what I mean).

Here’s Chitin (technically her full name is Chitin Meleon)! She’s sorta like a computer bug, who mildly, involuntarily glitches and distorts the world around her at a radius. As a result, she chooses to reside in the Shrouded Palisade and never leaves it, as the structure’s place a bit beyond the Pixel Plane makes it unaffected by her destabilizing capabilities (and cancels them out as long as she’s in it). She’s soft-spoken, innocent and cryptic - and not 100% sure of herself, as she’ll speak to someone only in the form of questions until she gets comfortable enough w/ their presence.

If she were animated in the ENA style, I imagine there’d be a scepter on one of the tentacles of the palisade, and she’d slide down it.

Okay so I really wanted to DRAW some fantasy food but then I realized, idk how to draw food...

I do imagine they'd probably have weird vegetation? And different variation of farm animals, a side effect from eating the magical vegetation. So yes! They have more magic fueling foods. A list I thot of and what I think they'd do ✨ magically ✨

1. Stardust Sapphires: Delicate, shimmering blue fruits that emit a faint glow. When consumed, they grant a temporary boost in mental acuity and focus.

2. Luminescent Nectar: A radiant, glowing liquid extracted from celestial flowers. Drinking this nectar enhances one's magical abilities for a short duration.

3. Aetherian Crystalberries: Small, translucent berries that sparkle with a faint inner light. These berries possess healing properties when consumed and are often used in medicinal remedies.

4. Celestial Mooncakes: Delicious pastries that appear to change color and emit a gentle glow depending on the phase of the moon. Each phase imbues the mooncake with different enchantments.

5. Ethereal Elixirs: Mystical potions brewed from rare celestial herbs and infused with celestial energies. They provide various magical enhancements or temporary abilities, such as flight, enhanced strength, or invisibility.

6. Aurora Apples: Apples that reflect the vibrant colors of an aurora. Eating one grants the consumer a sense of tranquility and peace while rejuvenating their spirit.

7. Nebula Noodles:Noodles made from stardust-infused flour, creating a dish that shimmers with faint twinkling lights. They offer a surge of energy and a feeling of cosmic inspiration when consumed.

Everglow Soup: A luminescent broth that seems to shimmer with an inner light, this celestial soup is made from an assortment of rare, glowing vegetables found only in the most enchanting meadows of the celestial realm. Wooly Celestial Cow Steak: Sourced from the fabled Wooly Celestial Cows that graze upon the shimmering pastures of the celestial realm, this steak boasts a tender and succulent texture unlike any other. Infused with the essence of cosmic herbs and celestial grains in their diet, the steak offers a delicate balance of flavors—earthly yet otherworldly—accompanied by a hint of the cow's wooly, ethereal nature.

I also thot it would be funny if there is just Pink Kale 💀 or something so dumb like that. Most foods have their own magical names like Everglow Soup, Mystic Herb Bread, and then Pink Kale 🤪

Review:

In case you couldn't have guessed from my other posts here, I consider myself witchy. When I saw that Three Moons had a blend dedicated to Eros (an underappreciated God in my humble opinion), I was captivated and knew I had to try it.

The tea is familiar, it reminds me of Witching Hour, but no anise flavor and amped up chocolate! The roses and cacao nibs are th3 strongest notes- a perfect pairing for those in a romantic (or perhaps spicy) mood.
