I have a question and a request. Question: When CQL first started airing, what were people saying about the relationship between WWX and LZ in the show, and about the actors playing them? Did the CP start right away? Request: Then later on, when the BTS started appearing (when was that - after the show finished airing, right?), what were people saying about the real interactions between the two actors? Were people shocked? Amazed? Even more curious? I can imagine social media was on fire! But I'd like to hear from someone who "lived" through it in real time. Please give me a description of what it was like - especially what your thoughts and feeling were as you saw it happening. I wish I could have been there! Thank you!

Hi Blbrave! Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying my blog!

This is all a very, very long time ago, but I'll do my best to share what I can remember.

Actually, the CP started before the show began airing. The supertopics were opened during filming in 2018. I think this was inevitable, given that the series is based on a BL story. Of course fans of the novel will go into all of this with an eye toward the two characters and, by extension, GG and DD.

Similarly, as the show was airing of course there were a large number of viewers who knew it was a BL and viewed it as a BL at that time, even though it was being billed as a martial brotherhood series. There was a lot of analysis from fans trying to spot various ways that the production team managed to get around censorship and signal the queer romance between WWX and LWJ.

Others have done far better, more comprehensive analysis of all that than I could ever do, but it's so long ago I don't know where those posts might have gone. Some of this was discussed in my post about queerbaiting, so you can look there for more info.

As I said in that post, one of their smartest ways of highlighting the queer relationship was to downplay romance between the straight characters. We never see a straight couple doing something that we don’t also see LWJ and WWX doing. The wedding happens off camera, yet we see LWJ and WWX do their bows on camera. There’s never a kiss or any kind of PDA between straight characters, yet we see LWJ and WWX in each other’s arms throughout the series.

We got a gay kiss:

We got gay sex:

There was also the headband repeatedly being described as the domain of only family and spouses, and the various ways they connected it with WWX. WWX grabbing it when he was possessing the paperman, and also at one point being tied to LWJ by the wrist with the headband - all of this signalling that WWX was a spousal figure for LWJ.

There was the drunk scene with LWJ giving WWX chickens (a wedding tradition in China).

And many more examples I won't get into.

There were many of those types of things in the series, and they were discussed enthusiastically at the time. However, I don't think there were many bystanders who made those connections. It was primarily fans of the books/show (i.e. those who appreciated it as a BL story and not as a bromance/friendship story) who saw and discussed those hints.

I know the idea that anyone could be so oblivious to the gay subtext throughout the story that they miss the queerness entirely is hard to get one's head around, but straight viewers usually just see WWX and LWJ as best friends and sworn martial brothers. The show could never have been made or aired if that wasn't the case.

In fact, newer fans might not be aware that there was a lot of controversy during filming because of leaked early attempts to create a straight romance between Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing. Some relationship-building scenes between them were filmed, and at one point in the BTS GG is heard complaining about the straight romance and saying that all those scenes should be deleted.

In the production team's defense, there was doubt at the time about whether the show could air given its source material as a BL novel. They likely had investors and backers pressuring them to make sure that the story was unambiguously straight.

Fans of the novel made a massive uproar about it, threatening to boycott the series. The backlash was so extreme that it became a bigger threat to the success of the show, and the straight romance was killed. We all owe a lot to those agitators! 😅

The BTS

The BTS clips were first discussed in an Untamed press conference (that section of the interview starts at around 36:30). The producer said that in the future some of the behind-the-scenes moments would be shared. GG and DD exchanged a glance and looked extremely uncomfortable with it.

A lot of turtles find that clip funny, and laugh about what GG and DD might 'have to hide', but I have never understood how fans can find GG and DD's discomfort funny.

It might surprise some newer turtles to hear that there were moments where GG and DD appeared to be uncomfortable with the BTS, but there were.

Another moment happened in an interview where GG and DD were asked to explain a BTS scene of the two of them in the boat, where GG is lying in DD's lap. DD turns to the interviewer with a shocked and displeased look on his face and says, "They released this?"

There were other moments as well, but I haven't kept a comprehensive record of all that. This happened long before I clued in on how quickly clips can disappear in this fandom.

I believe that it is totally normal to have mixed feelings about the BTS, and I believe GG and DD are no exception to that. No doubt they enjoy some of the clips and feel uncomfortable about some of them, just like many turtles (myself included).

There were official BTS clips released during promo, but the unofficial BTS clips didn't come until later. I talked in more detail about the unofficial BTS and how they came to be released here.

The unofficial clips began being released by fansites in the fall of 2020. It would be hard to overstate how different the atmosphere around them was to what it is now. Now it's quite common to find BTS clips all over the place, both in C-social media and on international sites like YouTube and Instagram.

However, back in 2020 they were extremely hard to get ahold of, and sharing them outside of where they were initially released was strictly forbidden and frowned upon by fans. In fact, if you dig back through my 2020 posts I'm sure you'll find many posts where I admonish people not to share the BTS clips, and where I bitch about people sharing them without authorization. I also answered a lot of asks about these issues at the time (just one example).

Times have changed a lot, and now everyone is sharing them all very freely without any concerns.

The situation was a lot different back then:

GG and DD had gained a tremendous amount of popularity from the show, but their reputations and careers were not yet fully established and secure.

227 was still an active concern that was still making news and still impacting GG's life directly. He had not yet recovered from any of it and was still mostly lying low. He was constantly being attacked and antis were constantly out to get him.

The Untamed was still fresh and current, and being discussed regularly in the media. Because filming was still fairly recent, what happened during filming would still run the risk of impacting GG and DD's lives and careers.

Fans were coming under very close scrutiny because of 227 and other fandom-related scandals. The government was starting to crack down heavily on fandom culture.

This was all uncharted territory. No one knew how the BTS might be received, or how it might impact GG and DD. Fans were very freaked out about the possibility of anything compromising getting leaked and harming the boys.

No doubt fansites were also worried about how fans might respond to some of the releases, and wanted to ensure they didn't upset or anger fans, or stir up more excitement than could be safely contained within the fandom.

All of this contributed to a climate of extreme caution and secrecy around the release of BTS clips.

We never knew when one might be released, and when they were released they were typically only put online for a few minutes, then deleted. This was all done in an effort to limit the exposure of these clips primarily to turtles who have GGDD's best interests in mind.

The clips were heavily watermarked and overlaid with visual and audio curses that 'reuploaders must die!' ('banyun biss', which I'm sure most of you have encountered in some of the clips you've seen).

Those who missed out were out of luck. It was extremely socially unacceptable to re-share clips once they'd been deleted. Those who missed out would have to rely on recaps and transcripts from those who had seen the clips. Fans took to staying up all hours watching and waiting for a release.

Back in those days people tried to save every clip they could, hoarding them greedily. Turtles' phones were filling up with large video files. It's funny to think about now, because the clips are everywhere and so easy to find these days, but back then it was a whole Thing.

The initial releases were sporadic and quite tame as fansites dipped their toes in the water of how all this would be received. Gradually over time clips became more frequent and stayed up longer, and some of the more salacious stuff began being released. Those clips were often accompanied by hilarious intro images.

Of course all of the clips were heavily discussed as they came out, and a clearer picture of GG and DD's relationship and of their experience of filming began to take shape over time. Some of the fake rumors (such as the 49 fake candies and the CPN that GG designed a racing suit for DD) were gradually proved to be true as these clips were released. However, that was mostly confined to fandom circles.

There were occasionally times when these clips or their content would cross over into the mainstream and start trending on Weibo. In many of those cases, the hotsearches would be bought and pushed by antis of GG and DD who want to see them cancelled. At those times turtles would jump into action to wash those topics and replace them with mundane, unrelated content.

There were fan theories and fake rumors about GG and DD's reaction to the clips. Sometimes when new clips were released GG and DD would be seen online and turtles assumed they were watching them. Of course, considering the clips featured them, it's highly likely that they did eagerly await releases just like the rest of us.

A large percentage of BXG light banners and slogans came directly out of the BTS, some of which you can see GG and DD discussing in LRLG rumors.

I suspect that it was likely a mixed bag for them. Some clips might have really stressed them out either upon initial release or after reactions began to emerge, while others likely made them laugh and feel nostalgic about filming.

There were definitely a few scandals and close calls that came out of the unofficial BTS, and solos and antis frequently tried to use them against GG and DD and tried to spin negative narratives about their relationship based using disingenuous takes and edits of them (they still do to this day).

For example, the clip where GG tells DD that he prefers a natural look to idol makeup was used against GG at the time, and antis tried to make it seem like GG was homophobic and that GG was against men wearing makeup. Some of the clips where they were playfighting or bickering were used to try to create a narrative that they hated each other. That kind of thing.

BTS and fan service

One of the most common questions I've gotten about the BTS - and I still often get this question - is, "Aren't the BTS just acted out/scripted as fan service to promote the show?"

There are a few reasons people have this question in their minds.

Solos #1 narrative about GGDD is that their CP was just for the show and the BTS was all fan service, and nothing about their relationship is real. They push this claim very aggressively on social media anytime GGDD or The Untamed is discussed, and new fans will almost always encounter those claims in this way.

CP fan service is a normal part of how dramas are promoted, so people familiar with Asian dramas will often immediately jump to that assumption about GG and DD and about the BTS.

Heteronormativity leads many people to immediately dismiss the possibility of a gay relationship, which leads them to try to come up with other explanations for those clips.

People naturally have a hard time believing what they're seeing with some of those clips. Some of it is pretty jaw-dropping and it's understandable that some people will be skeptical.

However, there are a lot of really good reasons why these clips are obviously not fan service.

For one thing, the show was billed as a martial brotherhood, not as a romance. Some of the official BTS clearly did try to appeal to CP and MDZS fans and could be counted as fan service, but those weren't even the ones BXG are most excited about. (There is a playlist of some of the official BTS clips here).

The most exciting stuff was never released during promo, and almost none of it is overtly romantic. A lot of it is really crude and totally unreleasable as promo. GG and DD are lewd, crude and often rude in ways that only two people who are really close could ever get away with. In many cases it's the casual way GG and DD constantly cross polite social boundaries with each other that shows their intimacy, rather than anything overtly sweet or romantic.

A lot of it is also totally incomprehensible to regular audiences. You have to be a turtle digging deeply into GGDD to understand the significance of most of it. For example the way GG took care of DD on his birthday, or the way DD constantly bargained and haggled with GG to get him to eat more.

Most importantly, if it was all fan service then why did GG and DD never do any joint CP endorsements? The entire point of doing that type of fan service is to make a buck. Other drama CP - including BL - do this all the time.

And it doesn't make sense that a production that was as low budget as The Untamed could afford to have the two lead actors learn a whole second set of lines and do a whole second performance that never ended up getting released.

And of course, none of that explains why the bulk of the BTS clips ended up in the hands of fans and released years after the show finished airing. A lot of it still has never been released to this day.

I've often joked that if the BTS were scripted they were far more complex, more melodramatic and better written than the drama itself. You just can't come up with this stuff in a writer's room. 😅

Anyway, this post got a bit long but hopefully it gives you a bit more of a picture of what it was all like at the time. Sorry, I guess I didn't talk much about my own feelings/reactions, but hopefully you can get somewhat of a sense.

Overall it was exciting, but I also had some deep reservations about it all (and got a lot of hate mail for voicing those feelings, too). Keep in mind this wasn't long after 227, so I think it's understandable that I was feeling very wary about everything.

But that's all water under the bridge now. It's been many years, and if the BTS were going to harm GGDD it would have already happened. I think it's all pretty safe territory now.

Edit: some more of my thoughts and feelings at the time:

One of the most exciting things for me about the BTS clips was seeing so many of the fake rumors being proved true. There were a lot of rumors (including the 49 fake candies) that I totally scoffed at when I first heard about them, only to later find via the BTS clips that I had been totally wrong about them and that these things had actually happened, and even crazier things were gradually revealed.

Things were changing pretty rapidly for a while there now that I think about it.

Learning more about their relationship and seeing just how much they looked out for each other was another big one for me. Also the timeline. The BTS really reinforced my belief in The Devil's Timeline (the belief that they got together prior to filming).

But overall that was a very different time in the fandom as well. There were always so many candies coming out, not just BTS clips but things that came out of GG and DD's activities and social media posts. It was a really really busy time in the fandom.

Since then there has been a government crackdown on fandom culture, on the entertainment industry, on LGBTQ etc. in China, plus DD's split with Nike and him having to delete a lot of his GG candy posts from his Weibo account.

Things are so different now, and unfortunately a lot of it for the worse. Being a turtle is not always easy, and I'm sure being GG and DD can't always be easy either. We make it work, but I do sometimes look back wistfully on the freer, more exciting times in the fandom.

More such times could come in the future. We just have to keep moving forward and hope for the best.

BJYX - Thursday Madness ( 12/7/23 )

I don’t know what’s with this date that they both decided to attack us with updates. We were prepared for WYB, because the event was planned tho he still surprised us with some bits. I swear when I saw the alert on my phone for XZS update I was 🫢🫢🫢. They are both feeding us so well.

Here’s my attempt at doing a recap of the candies ( and other things ) we got today. This may not be all inclusive, I only added the popular ones being talked about.

Our day started pretty early when WYB posted on his Weibo. All of the attendees of the event were actually sharing some pre show photos on their accounts and some of us were waiting what’s he gonna post. Everyone else were sharing professional photos but then WYB goes ahead and shares a b&w photo that tells us he is still in bed 😂😂😂 this bitch. I also feel like he didn’t want to shoot outside the exclusive “town” cause there are people going around and they may crowd if he does opening shooting. The night he arrived, 12/6, everyone saw Lele / Yanyan around but no WYB. So he was really trying to not be seen unless it was time for the show.

The photo itself is kinda mysterious tbh. It’s like something you can send to your s/o and be — “im waiting for you” HAHAHAHAHA! Tho I think for WYB he can send a more explicit one to XZ 🫢🫢🫢 So we get the PG version. What we noticed is the channel he is tuned in is CCTV 5. He said this in an interview with XZ, that when he is alone, he keeps the TV open with CCTV 5 and Volume 3. So he’s still doing it! Also, this was taken using his Leica M11 b&w. I feel so happy knowing that! He is still on his photography hobby. Too bad he couldn’t go around the venue cause i bet there are lots of sights to see. The Leica CPN is only getting stronger. ☺️ ( I have already talked about the Leica CPN at length, so just search it on my blog ). Side note, even if the photo was so simple it went on HS #7 lol. His power.

Then it was time for WYB to make his appearance and he didn’t disappoint. First of all, he was in YELLOW. BXG color. Yeah, it could be a stylist choice or whatever. But this is a clowning space and I think we are free to interpret it as a sign for us.

But what’s more glaring is his hat. It looks so much like the one he wore at CQL concert & fan meet. Also reminds us of the whole One Piece CPN between them ( the post i’m linking is a starter but there has been more examples since like this one ).

To be fair, WYB is someone who loves a good old hat/cap. from his bucket hats & caps — that is more for anonymity. It also extends to his performances like 11/11 finesse or the initial photoshoot for ROMW. What i’m saying is, we should not forget the fact that this is his personal preference as well and not entirely because of candy. Tho I have to say that the style is interesting. Why does it have to be so close to that? It’s like he is bringing us back memory lane.

WYB is honestly so beautiful today. He always is but there was something about his aura. He is chill. He was genuinely interested and i found it sweet of him, during the boat ride, he was clapping for Rocco, like applauding him for the event i guess. In the meantime, on Weibo, the top hot search were people criticizing the “boat” thing on GQ ( literally something like GQ boat embarrassment was the tag ) As soon as the live started it went on 1 or 2. I don’t know if Bobo saw that but I just like how he showed his appreciation to Rocco, and by extension, his team. That’s just my interpretation and it could be a completely different thing but knowing WYB, he is very generous with acknowledging people.

I also want to address another “candy” some cpfs are laughing about, it’s a fancam where Rocco moves to sit with WYB before the boat sailed and WYB smiled and said no. They were interpreting that as WYB doesn’t want Rocco to sit with him. Speculating that as he doesn’t want to get close cause ZZ will be jealous. But if you look at it, he was asked if he wants to switch seats. WYB declined. He was okay with his position. I guess some people have some beef with Rocco & GQ and that’s fine. However, what we feel about certain things is not the same as what the boys would feel. I also think that at this point, It’s in WYB’s best interest to have a good relationship with people in the industry. For example him attending 10c Starlight, even if a lot of his so/os hate Tencent ( and with good reason ok sure ). He is only extending his reach and it’s better to not burn bridges.

That got serious, so here, have some comparison between the gremlin in 2018 to now. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

The first thing is the BGM for the exercise section of the vlog Hans Zimmer/Richard Harvey《Preparation》 which was used in the 2015 movie The Little Prince. A favorite CPN symbol among us. Like, okay, MXTX probably didn't intend it to be sexy, but damn, when you look at YZY's marriage, the idea of her having some secret past before JFM where she really got to live, but gave it up for duty... That's the kind of thing I eat up!

What are your favorite things about the ship? - THE NAMES. Seriously, Violet Spider with a sexy purple whip, and hand that could crush your golden core, two seriously dangerous people that one-on-one you would NEVER want to mess with!!! *Sighs* yeah, definitely sexy.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? - Are there any *popular* opionions about them? /s When I think about it, I guess it would be that they would be no better for each other than YZY and JFM, that there is a reason their history is history, having much to do with the sects they ended up in, and they were never a "meant to be", just a "could have been, maybe, had the world been different".

What made you ship it? - Because there is a history between them we know so little about, two women who were so close they pledged their firstborn children into an arranged marriage (and you know Madame Jin would have had to fight JGS tooth and nail to arrange it, because logically JGS would have wanted to choose the most politically/economically advantageous option, and while the Jiang had some political clout at that time, I'm sure JGS would have preferred an alliance with someone like the Wen). And because I think they'd be sexy together :D

What are your favorite things about the ship? - To a certain degree, the ship is a blank slate because we know so little about Madame Jin (including her effing name), but what we do know is that both of them are strong, opinionated women who can be vicious in their own ways, particularly when they believe they're protecting their children, even if they don't always show it in healthy ways (this is fiction, who cares about healthy ways lol). And again, the actresses in CQL are gorgeous and remind me I'm bi over and over again.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? - That, personally, I find them more interesting and engaging than any other femslash pairing in the fandom? Because I can enjoy various groupings of Mianmian, Wen Qing, and Jiang Yanli, but to me they just don't have that tooth, that bite that the older ladies do. But that's just a personal opinion - I'm very ship and let ship so enjoy your ships :D

Why don't you ship it? - I'm trying to put my finger on it. Because I HAVE read a handful of fics, and I can appreciate the stories and the writing, and it's a perfectly fine ship! How can I not appreciate a love for NHS and LXC. I guess it just comes down to me not feeling it. They don't reach into my chest and grab my heart and scream at me that their story needs to be told in every variation possible.

What would have made you like it? - I dunno, really. As I said, I've read a few fics and tried, so I'm not sure what would shift it over from neutral to ship. I can see the potential, it's definitely there, I just kind of... *shrugs*

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? - The biggest one is the shippers - a lot of the people I started following on Tumblr when I first got into the CQL/MDZS fandom were XiSang shippers, and they're all such awesome people that I will defend the ship on their behalf at the first sign of attack ;) And the characters are both ones I enjoy (NHS more so, he's my MAJOR BLORBO), and I can at least see the potential in the ship! It's one of those things where all the ingredients are there and correct, but it's just not the cake I want to eat.

why this is hurtful

a lot of my posts on @songfeng-shuiyue reference real-world chinese language and cultural practices that date back throughout chinese history. whenever i post something on that blog, i’m taking elements from my own identity and culture to share with anyone who reads them. these elements are interspersed throughout the world of mdzs and cql, and they play a large (albeit subtle) part in shaping the world that our favorite characters live in. some of these practices are still in place today, being used and referenced by actual people we know and love and care about, and it’s an incredibly uncomfortable and unpleasant feeling to feel as though they are being publicly viewed as tropes or quirks to be appropriated at will by someone outside the culture, for a imaginative or derivative setting.

i’ve previously spoken to these individuals over DM to explain my perspective and ask them to remove the tags. each time, they have done as i requested and promised to stop. but over and over again, this behavior has persisted. it makes me not want to share those parts of myself and my culture/language any more, because it really hurts. it hurts even more because one of my favorite things about being in fandom has always been interacting with and befriending people outside of my own culture. because when i do, i naturally always want to share, and learn about them in turn.

this is how i feel. this is how some of us in fandom feel, every single day.

First of all, there are no 'categories' - a turtle is a turtle. As I have said a thousand times, there is no obligation to believe they're a real couple. A huge percentage of turtles don't really believe they're a couple. Many have never believed they were a couple at any point. Creating or focusing on divisions is destructive to the sense of community in turtledom. Just be a turtle.

It's a bit of a conceit to believe that just because you no longer believe SZD, that suddenly you're set apart from others. You're not. You're just an ordinary turtle.

Also, before I get a bunch of asks about this 'breakup' theory, let me say that it's absolutely nothing new. There have been tons of theories of their breaking up over the years. One prior to the Japan trip, one in 2020, and every year since. Just as there are people who become SZD turtles, there are people who fall out of belief. It happens all the time. Some come to believe they never were a couple, some come to believe they broke up - it's nothing new.

Often people who rely heavily on candy for their continued belief will wax and wane in their belief as the supply of candy waxes and wanes. This is very common*.

*Just a reminder that GG and DD are ordinary people who have busy lives and don't owe us proof of their relationship.

I personally don't see any evidence that they broke up, and in fact there's plenty of evidence to the contrary - including the recent Weibo hot search after DD removed CQL from his bio. A hot search about them breaking up started trending and was immediately shut down, meanwhile several other BJYX hotsearches were left to dominate the list for a while.

okay what is tgcf is it worth consuming so I'm not blacklisting half your blog

tgcf/heaven official's blessing is a book by the same author who wrote the book adapted into the untamed/cql. i enjoyed it a lot and thought it was funny as hell but it has two main issues: 1) the translation is bad (in terms of grammar mostly) and 2) idk how to explain this succinctly but the author (mxtx) can be a freak. for example there's one scene that's very sexually charged and there's a child present. it might not "cross a line" but its Very Weird

IF you can look past that it's a great story. It's about scrap-collecting immortal xie lian who has just ascended to godhood for the third time (after getting kicked out twice before). at it's heart tgcf is a love story between xie lian and his last remaining follower, the ghost king hua cheng.

there's no live action adaptation (yet) but there is an animated series. it fixes my two big issues with the book but personally i had a really hard time enjoying it because i disliked the way people were drawn. but that seems like an unpopular opinion. there's also a web series but I don't know anything about it.

that all being said... i finished the book yesterday so my blog won't be all tgcf anymore <3

520 and 521 : A Boxiao History 🤍

CPN and all that good stuff related to this celebration for the past few years. If you are not familiar with it, 520 means I love you and it’s considered their Valentines day. 521 on the other hand means “I am willing”. Individuals celebrating 520 and 521 have been known to take the opportunity to express their feelings for their partners or crushes through social media. It’s also prime time for brands to market and release their own 520 promos and limited edition merchandise. This post will cover 2016-2021. Please note that this post is very CPN biased and it’s okay if you don’t believe any of it. Lol.

• 2016

During this time, GG was still filming Superstar Academy in Hangzhou and almost daily you can see fansites posting photos onset. However on 5/18 there were less photos and it seems like GG got off work earlier than usual ( as per resource blogs who posted that day ). DD on the other hand was in Sanya filming the TTXS episode where he was a pilot.

5/19, DD jumps on a flight back to Changsha wearing a pink cap ( and we know what color he associates with love ). GG then surfaces back in Hangzhou to resume filming @ 10:20.

CPN: GG went to Sanya. This is like probably not real at all cause this is 2016! Lol. Unless you believe in Devil Timeline.

Now we arrive at 520. GG posts a series of selfies from filming SA but as you can see there are two that are out of place. He is in a car and then he blurred something at the back. Lol. Of course our CPN brains will think there is someone there, that’s why he blurred it. Who? We don’t know.

DD on 520 was working and had an event with UNIQ ( Changsha ) ; a coincidence, he does a gesture that portrays a rabbit. Interesting.

The next day he left Changsha to go to Seoul, all photos from fansites had him with a pink cap and a completely different outfit from the Weibo selfie he shared. Why are these two sharing photos that are not from the same day? Stock photos? 👀

5/19 GG went to Duyun ( Guizhou ) for filming of Fights Break Sphere and he was wearing a pink top. Do you see a pattern here? Lol. They like Pink. Around this time DD was filming Private Shunshan Academy and there were a lot of on set videos posted.

Now on 520, GG posted a weekly vlog showing his big hotel room with a very nice bathtub. Just watch it. my god he was so wholesome. He even said here that 520 is important and I agree! 🤍🌸

How about DD. He shared a short clip of an Action scene from PSA Drama. That’s all.

5/18, they both left CQL filming to go to Beijing for their own work engagements. One flew from Hangzhou ( DD ) and the other from Yiwu ( GG ). DD was wearing the off-white top we are all familiar with ( black for him and white for GG ).

5/19 GG was filming a video for his cooperation with KFC and he said this line :

I mean it’s most likely fanservice thing but considering that he’s been working with DD for the past weeks already and they had to part? Hmmmm. Maybe this means something more to him that time cause he can relate. 👀

This is a popular one, because GG’s 520 post he was wearing a similar top as DD’s. Tho you can argue that this was a popular print at the time and pretty common— but no. It’s the same one from off-white. Same exact style. What we don’t know tho if what GG was wearing was his or not. DD posted with the kadian 23:28 ( love zhan, love bo. ) CQL has not aired yet and most BXGs have not been all FBI on them so there were probably other things going on that we didn’t pick up on. ✌🏼

As we all know, GG was not in the public eye during that time so it was DD who was so extra this whole time. DD posted this Douyin where he sent a Love Gun. Which is their thing. 🤍

Now the star of this year was undoubtedly DD’s 521 Ben and Jerry x Nike post. I will just direct you to other people’s post about it and it’s truly a fandom favorite. Yibo had no chill that time.

Personally, what stayed with me from that chaotic day was the glimpse of “Have some faith” printed on the clothes. It was such a nice message considering what was going on that time. I felt like it was intentional, it was a message to stay strong. Yes, I have faith and 2 years later I still do. I still have faith that these two will make it through. 🤍

Alright, how does one consume the untamed? I see that it’s like… a bunch of different forms and adaptations with various degrees of representation.

hi! this is actually a good question and really it mostly depends on what you're looking to get out of the franchise!

as far as i know, these are all of the major versions currently:

the original novel: mo dao zu shi by mxtx (also known as mdzs, tl/aka: grandmaster of demonic cultivation)

the live action drama: the untamed (chinese title is chen qing ling, aka: cql)

the donghua (chinese animation): mo dao zu shi

the manhua (chinese comic): mo dao zu shi (the only version i haven't read/watched)

the audio drama: mo dao zu shi

the untamed and the donghua are both censored so the gay relationship between wei wuxian and lan wangji (the main characters) is not explicit. the romance between them is still quite obvious in both versions though, it's just more in subtext rather than on-screen declarations/physical affection.

my favourite adaptations are, in order: 1. the untamed, 2. the audio drama, 3. the donghua.

i personally dislike the original novel and i cannot in good faith recommend it because the way the main relationship is written is quite fetishized and homophobic. i've posted about my opinions about this quite a lot, so feel free to search my blog if you're interested in what this means. the tldr is that there's a lot of harmful stereotypes and consent issues, especially in the extra chapters. the female characters also have a smaller role than in cql.

these issues are unfortunately also present in the audio drama and in the manhua. but to be fair to the novel, some scenes and themes etc that were cut/changed/simply not well adapted are pretty good and they definitely do have merit and can give you a new perspective on the story and characters. you could also listen to the audio drama instead of reading the novel, since they are Very similar (the only reason i have it ranked so high is because the voice actors deliver an amazing performance and it's a beautiful production with good editing and music).

since you're asking me personally, i would say to start with the untamed. it's the perfect introduction to the franchise imo and you'll get the most out of it. you can watch it on youtube, netflix or viki. even though it's censored, there's absolutely no question that the relationship between wei wuxian and lan wangji is meant to be romantic, if that's what you're looking for! what you want to do after that is up to you, but i would say either pick the novel/audio drama or the donghua (youtube).
