CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN—April 2039
Without coffee, Sam did not recall why her alarm clock went off so damn early. She could not remember the previous day’s embarrassment at all until squeezing a leg into Johnny Storm’s jumpsuit. Why the hell would a man wear something this tight? Sam hoped training today involved punching something she was less afraid of than Natasha because she was poised to wail out frustration on something flammable. Tandy spoke of her required ‘discharges’ of Lightforce if she hadn’t used power for a long period of time; Sam wondered if this was the same thing. Maybe her body was just antsy with pent up energy? Maybe it had nothing to do with Bucky himself? She hoped.
Out on the lawn, travel cup in hand but not enough caffeine in her veins, scarfing the last bite of a croissant sandwich down, Sam walked sloppily towards a car in the drive. A small kit of pigeons pecked between the gravel at the corner of the lawn. Sam kept shuffling forward expecting the birds to scatter as she neared, but in her morning haze, it slowly dawned on her that they didn’t move. Her foot stopped less than an inch away from one’s foot. She stared curiously.
The birds took flight simultaneously aimed at her body. Startled, Sam raised her hands to her face, tossing her mug aside, and falling back onto the drive. The squeaking noise that erupted in her shock was followed by a snickering laugh across the lawn. Big Sam stood in his sweats, arms crossed over his heart, cackling.
“Your face,” Wilson breathed through joyous belly laughs, “priceless.”
Sam wasn’t hurt, save her pride and liquid lucidity. Option #1 for punching: Big Sam. She grabbed her half-spilled tumbler off the ground, frowning, but thankful that she had not worn her white sweatshirt as she dusted off. Bucky stood by the car, holding out a peace offering of more coffee and failing to hide his own smile. Sam got into the car, thinking Option #2 within arms length.
Trailed by various soaring friends, Big Sam waved Sam and Bucky on as he completed his run before training the teens. His pace was slow but steady, his salt and pepper hair glittered in the dawn light. Samantha tilted her forehead to rest against the window of the outlandish, dark green, custom Ferrari Bucky had chosen from Tony’s garage. Bucky must have done something right to convince Tony to give him access to his ‘babies.’
Sam drank some of the new tumbler then wiggled it into the holder. “How long is the drive?”
“Over an hour, when I go the speed limit.” Bucky smirked, energized by their little prank. When Sam didn’t reply, he shifted his eyes from the road to her, his nub of a ponytail gently scratching against the leather head rest. “It looks nice,” Bucky tried, making a waving gesture over a shoulder with his free hand.
Trying to put a shine on early hours with a compliment of her hair cut was not going to work.
“I hate you,” Sam grumbled before shoving her hands into her kangaroo pocket and nodding back off against the pane of passing trees.
Bucky smiled again.
Tumblr media
Sharon adjusted Sam’s shoulders and feet. “Try it like you’re shooting.”
Sam hit zero of the stationary targets set 50 feet out, facing away from the Rogers’ classic farmhouse home outside of…where? Sam had no knack for domestic geography. She wanted desperately to be fantastic at this. Instead, her showing so far was truly pathetic. All that came forward from her palm was a wide spit of flame that launched Sam backwards into the grass.
Her coach returned to her side. “Ok, describe to me what you’re doing.”
They wanted her to fire a blast of energy that maintained inertia across the rich green field from her left arm, of course, which was not her dominant. She was having to mentally adjust the few aiming lessons of her life to the other side, and she felt overwhelmed and stupid for not picking this up immediately. She was good at a plethora of things, all sorts of subjects, but not this. Sam’s analytic mind reeled, rushing through physics calculations and velocities and impacts and force and speed. Equations were much easier on paper. Or when Missy helped. This was Sam, alone, with an audience of professionals. It should have been her dream, what she’d worked for this whole time. It made her sweaty instead…or would have if she could still sweat.
“I’m…aiming like drawing the bow back.”
Sharon laughed at herself. “Right, shooting arrows, with Clint." She rounded on her heels, remarkably spry for a woman in her fifties. “Bucky, give me your weapon.”
The resistance to the tug of the assault rifle from his chest let Agent 13 know just how possessive the soldier was of his comforts. Nobody ever fired it except Bucky unless some bizarre happenstance prevented him maintaining and cleaning it himself. Steve couldn’t stop the curl of his lips.
“Just for a moment,” Sharon comforted, “I promise, I just need to demonstrate kickback. This is the most equivalent size. Pretty please?”
Bucky relinquished.
Sharon gingerly cradled Bucky’s metal baby in her arms, stifling a laugh, until she was back by Sam’s side. She positioned the girl’s hands, shoulder, and the angle of her hips. “I’m expecting this to knock you over, so prove me wrong, yeah?” Sharon lowered her voice to barely a whisper, adding, “I know you can impress them.” She winked before shifting to stand behind Sam. “Tiny burst towards the targets, just so you can feel the force and correct. Just one, or Bucky will have a heart attack.”
Sam’s breath caught as she lifted the heavy weapon, afraid of falling on her ass, so she dug her heels in for balance and concentrated. She could feel something summoned inside by her focus, a tendril of steel reinforcing her arm, strengthening her shoulder socket. She practiced a one-count in her mind in an attempt to automate the timing in case the kickback overwhelmed her. Her finger gave a tentative squeeze.
The tat-tat-tat of gunfire startled her even when she expected it. Her feet did not falter until after the firing stopped, but then she stumbled back, unable to shift her balance forward against the punch of the butt into her pectoral.
“Goddamnit,” she mumbled.
“Not bad,” Sharon whispered with a pat on Sam’s shoulders, calling “You can have it back now!”
Bucky hovered a foot away and grabbed the gun back faster than Sam could release her hands. Sam had the distinct feeling she had managed to defile something precious to him, but he was gone before she could apologize or thank him for allowing it. Sharon wasted no time. “That’s the kind of thing happening inside your body—best guess—so I want you to prepare, to push back so that your balance aids your aim. Alright?”
Sam’s face betrayed her terror. Sharon put her arm around Sam, blocking the eye line of the men. “Sam, think of it as you are the bow string, you are what pushes the bullet forward. Sorry, mixed metaphors, but you are absolutely smart and strong enough to produce the different velocity and distance shots I’m asking for…plus I’d rather you learn to take down targets when they are far away rather than up close. This will technically make you good at both, and you’ll get stronger by producing and aiming different forces.”
Sam sagged a corner of her mouth in response but nodded. Her heart raced as Sharon walked away, leaving the impression of a demolition expert unspooling a cord to distance herself from dynamite. Missy’s voice quoted mathematical possibilities in her head. It made Sam focus on the problem at hand, in her hand.
So my body is a weapon now. Release the safety, feel the balance, and control to discharge…that’s shit soldiers say, right? Her eyes focused on the red center of rings but didn’t fire. Her eyes, she noticed, shifted focus as if a solid tunnel formed between her and the spot; the closer her field of vision got to the tiniest of spots, the hotter she felt.
Sam raised her arm. Every cell produced a tiny wave of energy, little ripples bouncing around, magnified when they hit the echo pad of her vibranium skin. She willed the little echos to converge to her left palm, and they did exactly as they were told. Behind her ears came a high ringing like the charge before Iron Man’s blast. Something methodical took over. Her periphery shut down. The game was an experiment; Sam needed the results. It was that simple. She made mental notes…that she couldn’t share with Missy. The ringing peaked. She fired off like a snapped rubber band, a bright whip of fire racing from her outstretched palm.
Sam did not puncture the target—she blew the whole thing sky high.
“What the hell,” Bucky shrieked.
Steve beamed with pride, but his eyebrows raised high in surprise anyway.
Sharon clapped after a split-second of shock. “Great, and now we’re gonna reign it back in a bit.”
Samantha Stark’s first ever shit-eating grin spread ear to ear across her face.
Tumblr media
Sam smiled all through lunch; she didn’t even mind the other three chatting as if she wasn’t there. She had no notion of what they were saying anyway. At some point, after Sam inhaled her pot roast and salad, Sharon turned to discuss a burgeoning plan to fully train her.
Sharon Rogers was engaging and kind, but Agent 13, the professional, dived back in with precision and intensity, convinced that she had relevant footage to help Sam train.
“No, no,” Sharon insisted, “the DVDs are in the garage. I know they are.”
Steve shook his head. “The player doesn’t even work anymore.”
Unhappy to see her trainer deflate, Sam offered to help. She fixed the Barton’s stuff all the time back when she lived there.
Sharon rushed to gather everything, dropping the hardware off at the table with Sam and her husband before disappearing again to search the garage. Bucky excused himself to set up the afternoon’s exercises.
While Sam tinkered, Steve stared out the window at Bucky work then shifted to watch her. Sam assumed he didn’t want to talk until he blurted, “I chose to be changed, too, back in ’43.”
Sam barely raised her chin, intent on her task, and clueless as to what he meant.
Steve started swirling his tea around in the cobalt blue tumbler. “I’ll give you the same advise I was given. Remember who you are. That doesn’t change simply because you can do more.”
Sam had no idea what prompted his concern, but it felt out of place with their current circumstance. “You mean, stay the girl born into technology so I can repair some old fart’s video system?” Sam smiled in jest.
Steve couldn’t help but smile back. “You’ve been hanging around Cloak and Dagger too much.” He knew Sam would never have spoken to him like that a year ago because it was familiar and playful, friendly for once. “You like it, admit it,” he added, grabbing away one of the little tools Sam had set down only to watch her fling her hand out in offense.
“Give,” she demanded.
He handed the screwdriver back. “I meant that sometimes when people have the ability to do something, they tend to think they must, that they have to use power. You don’t have to, you understand?”
Sam tinkered for another moment. Steve sipped his tea, thinking that the task before her did not require such an intensely dark expression.
“Sir, I wasn’t anybody before this,” Sam started slowly, “not to you or anyone else. I was given everything, and I was still nothing. So pardon me for enjoying being noticed, whether it’s because I can blow stuff up or because I can fix things.”
Bucky and Sharon returned before Steve could protest. Sam tightened the casing she’d replaced and triumphantly trotted to the living room.
“Perfect.” Sharon followed Sam. “Let’s set up while Bucky tries to clean my dishes without breaking anything.”
“Sharon,” Steve warned, hanging his head.
“Or twenty bucks…for interest added.”
“You said 15.99,” Bucky quoted, gathering plates, “and I would rather be blown up.”
Steve snorted, waving his hand forward. “Sam. Sic ‘em.”
“I’m not a dog. You’re the golden boy. Let’s make sure this plays,” she finished, turning into the den, “I promise I won’t set your house on fire.”
“I know you won’t, sweetheart.” Sharon, jumping forward to her plan, handed over the disc. “But after this, I want us to get back finding that sweet spot you found with that first target. Everything was in balance, you could see it in your glow.”
Sam crouched down to plug in the cables behind the viz-screen base. “What’d you mean?”
“Well, you know, the Extremis and vibranium, they work against each other or one dominates and you are orange and violet or your skin’s all a patchwork, but when it all works—” she linked her fingers “—together, you’re basically green. That’s a balance. We need to work on that.”
Tumblr media
Sam’s training in the afternoon was less terrifying when she tested the nuances of her energy strikes. She even shot the Cap Shield out of the sky…once.
Bucky couldn’t explain why Steve got choked up when Sam celebrated by bouncing up and down. Kid stuff, he thought, but while the dark road in front of him zipped under the car, he understood that his friend had no children to teach. Samantha Stark was the only child Steve Rogers had been around from her birth to adulthood, and his friend witnessed her learn something new. Bucky never considered that a bond on its own.
It was a confusing day for Bucky, including the cryptic conversation Steve had with him over the dishes. The talk ended with “Buck, if you don’t even bother to look for the right partner, the dance ends with you alone.” The sentiment was not new, but it came out of nowhere. Bucky remained distracted the whole afternoon while watching ancient footage of himself, Rogers, and the Howling Commandos, clips that Sharon had compiled long ago and refused to embarrass Steve with until she thought it might inspire Lil’Sam.
After seeing others go through growing pains, progress never feels as slow and arduous. It worked for Sam, but Bucky hardly paid attention.
“I see why they live like that,” Sam chirped, breaking the silence of the ride back to HQ, “it’s peaceful. No people around.” She’d continued her great mood all day.
“Yeah, nice to be secluded,” Bucky replied softly. Why was what Steve said bothering him so much?
When Sam made no further comment, his eyes focused back on the road, and the silence descended again. Bucky’s mind wandered to the distinction between children and adults for a time. He certainly felt his own innocence die with his father, having already grown up without a mother, but he remembered moments at Lehigh when recruits would befriend him. He knew, even at thirteen, the difference between being treated with respect or as a naive brat. He’d known then, and he was nowhere near as smart as Sam at that age. Why did he associate her joy negatively with youth? Why did he think Sam acted childish and unprofessional for celebrating a successful day? Hell, most of my training consisted of being brutalized until I complied. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
A thought popped into his head out of nowhere. “Where did you find the whisky?”
He knocked Sam out of deep contemplation aimed at the window. She raised her brows, tired.
“My gift, thank you by the way, how did you find it?”
“Oh,” she blinked, “my search of your name for information on your arm.” She shoved her hands back into her sweatshirt, adding,“happy belated birthday, by the way.” She was frozen in cryo on the day last month.
Bucky snorted. “I don’t count those anymore.”
Perhaps Sam was too tired to filter her thoughts. “If I were that old, neither would I.”
He tried to suppress a hearty laugh, biting his lower lip, darting his gaze off to the side. His attention turned back to the road quickly, but his smile did not fade right away.
Sam giggled, a new, charming sound. “Did you know that there are fan clubs dedicated to you? It’s actually a little freaky the number of photos they have of you, but there are so many fans of Captain America… They make up all these stories of celebrities you date, or have one night stands with. It’s weird.”
Bucky scowled, the first one Sam ever saw on him. She had to know this made him uncomfortable, but she kept going.
“I’m just saying you’ve got a big pool of options. Lots of takers. No one should be alo—”
“Would you and Steve mind your own damn business?” Bucky exploded. His blood boiled over in an instant.
Sam’s arms snapped to her sides, eyes as big as half dollars.
“It gets old really fast when you all just blurt out what you think I need—”
“Hey,” Sam yelled back, ”Steve knows you better than any person alive.”
“Then leave me to my life.” His temper wavered. Apparently, she was not angry that he’d snapped at her, but Bucky saying something against his friend, a man not around to defend himself, that crossed a line. Odd. An uncommon response from a teen.
“I’ve—” Sam got quiet while he stewed in irritation. “You’re right. I have no right, but…Tony, without Mom…he’s a shell, and I don’t want you to be a shell.”
Bucky pursed his lips. That insightful little twerp, he grumbled, unwilling to relinquish his anger yet, she has a point. Is this how Steve feels too? He made no reply aloud. He already knew the answer because Bucky heard the same speech year after year.
“Excuse me for not wanting that to happen to anyone else.” Sam let out a huffing sigh and shifted. “How much farther is it?”
“Why do you always ask me about this stuff?” Bucky couldn’t let it go just yet.
“I only asked if you knew about fan clubs, and then you screamed at me. Didn’t hear you screaming at Steve earlier…What did he say?”
“I wasn’t—sorry, I’m sorry.” The apology hardly explained, but this topic needed to die a quick death in his book. On top of all the rest, he kicked himself for ruining Sam’s good mood.
She curled into a ball in the seat. “Whatever. Be an asshole. Just get us home.”
Bucky found it interesting that Sam finally referred to headquarters as ‘home.’ She looked comically adorable when she pouted, but he thought it inappropriate to smile before being forgiven.

Chapter Four - Pretty Boy
Caspian made his way through to the living room of his high rise apartment that his parents had bought for him. The gorgeous city glittered like multi coloured jewels outside of the expansive ceiling to floor windows. The whole apartment reeked of old money, which was part of the reason why he spent so much time at Ed’s loft apartment. He’d never invited Ed back here – Ed didn’t seem to mind – he was worried that Ed would start to share the same views as Y/N.
The friends that Caspian had known for years were sitting on the plush sofa, dressed up for a night out as they balanced tumblers of whiskey in their hands. Caspian remembered that they were going to a fairly new bar on the Upper East Side, a bar that had about a month waiting list. One of Caspian’s friends’, Eli turned to Caspian with a smile as he nodded to a glass of whiskey on the coffee table in front of him.
“That one is yours; you’re still coming, aren’t you?” Eli asked taking a sip of his whiskey as Caspian shrugged on his jacket.
Caspian bit his lip and shook his head, “something’s come up, something that I need to sort out immediately. I should have sorted it by now, actually,” he muttered more to himself, “I’ll meet you guys there, alright? My name will be on the list, won’t it?”
Eli nodded as he looked at Caspian with disappointed eyes while the rest of his friends sneered at him. He had known that his friends would be disappointed but it still stung, “fine, see you later,” Eli said in a harsh voice, mumbling as Caspian reached the door, “it’s not like we’ve been planning this for over a month or anything.”
Caspian sighed as he walked out into the cold night air as he quickly hailed a cab to take him to Brooklyn. Caspian wished that he was anywhere but here as he pushed past the people smoking outside of the bar but he really didn’t have much of a choice. He needed Y/N’s help, only she could help him.
The loud music pounded in his skull, was it always busy in this damned bar? He spotted Y/N leaning on the bar, talking to one of her customers, her face lighting up as she laughed and fiddled with her hoop earrings. She looked really pretty in a band tee and ripped denim shorts, she looked like someone from a magazine. Caspian thought that he should really stop staring; he didn’t want to come off as a weirdo.
Clearing his throat, Caspian made his way to the bar, awkwardly passing a couple who were making out against the pool table. As soon as Y/N glanced in his direction, the easy smile slipped from her face as she stood up straight, mumbling something to the customer that she had been previously talking to. Raising an eyebrow, she walked over to Caspian, folding her arms as she stood with her back against the back bar, crossing one leg over the other.
“I never thought that I’d see you in here again, especially not on your own. Are you lost or something?” she said, sounding very disinterested as she picked at her red polished nails.
Caspian grimaced at her, feeling a bitter pang in his chest, “trust me, I never wanted to come into this shithole ever again.”
Y/N glared at him as she glanced over at him, her lip curling, “so, why are you here? To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I need to talk to you about something, privately. Is there somewhere that we can go?”
Y/N rolled her eyes as she looked down at her watch, “I’ve got a break in about five minutes, you had better not waste my time,” she sighed, biting her lip, “I’ll make you something while you wait,” she offered him a small smile before she began mixing him a drink.
Caspian watched, mesmerised as she effortlessly tossed the cocktail shaker into the air and then caught it with one hand. Caspian supposed that she was just showing off but it was so cool that he almost didn’t mind. In no time at all, Y/N smirked over at him as she slid the whiskey cocktail towards him. Caspian picked it up and took a tentative little sip, it was amazing. The rich caramel flavours danced along his tongue and it pleasantly warmed his insides as it smoothly slid down his throat.
“It’s good,” he gave her a grin and her smirk almost seemed to falter.
“I know,” she laughed, “it’s on the house, by the way,” she flounced off before Caspian had the chance to object.
Caspian looked around at the other patrons as he sipped his drink and waited for Y/N, everyone seemed to be really rowdy but he noticed that they were all smiling and having a lot of fun. They all had real smiles on their faces, not fake ones that Caspian had to plaster onto his face sometimes, he almost envied them. He felt fingers tug at his hair lightly that he almost groaned before quickly remembering where he was with a flush.
A voice cooed in his ear, “are you ready, pretty boy?” Y/N smirked as she nodded her head in the direction of the back door.
Caspian swallowed and got off his bar stool and followed her through the bar, aware of all the male attention that was focused on Y/N. Y/N stiffened and Caspian could tell that she felt uncomfortable. He suddenly felt protective as he glared at all the wandering eyes; he was ready to step in if things got out of hand.
As the pair got out into the fresh air, Y/N let out a relieved breath as she leaned against the brick wall as she shakily got out a cigarette. For a moment, Caspian saw a smidge of vulnerability that she usually hid behind her snarky attitude.
“Are the men always like that?” Caspian asked sympathetically.
Y/N nodded as she lit up her cigarette, “pretty much, I was thinking of putting on some jeans for tonight but I really like these shorts.”
Caspian felt angry on her behalf, “you don’t have to change what you’re wearing because of stupid men. I’m sorry, Y/N.”
“I appreciate it,” she blew out a curl of smoke, “so, what did you want, pretty boy?” she was obviously feeling more comfortable because her snarky attitude was back.
“Right,” Caspian had nearly forgotten why he was at Aslan’s tonight, “so, um. I have this family wedding to go to in a couple of weeks,” he finished lamely.
Y/N quirked an eyebrow as she laughed around the end of her cigarette, “um, I don’t know what to say, congratulations, I guess?” it came out as more of a question.
Caspian felt frustrated as he ran his fingers through his hair, why was it so hard to talk to her sometimes?
“It’s a family friend’s wedding, and I kind of need a date,” he bit his lip, “a fake date,” he added and she looked up at him in alarm when it dawned on her and her mouth dropped open slightly.
“Are you crazy?! No! Absolutely not, no,” she hissed, shivering slightly in the cold night air, Caspian slipped off his jacket and offered it to her which she refused with a shake of her head, “and they say that chivalry is dead,” she teased.
“Please come with me, Y/N?” she was the only one who could go with him, he knew that she wouldn’t want anything more, “my parents aren’t expecting me to bring anyone and I don’t want to give them the satisfaction of being right about me, please, Y/N,” he pouted.
“Why me?” she narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms, “I’m sure that any girl would jump at the chance, so why ask me?”
“Because, you don’t like me, I know that you don’t want anything to happen between us, so there won’t be any misunderstandings.”
Y/N nodded, “I guess that’s true,” she sighed, tapping a nail against her chin, “if I say yes, will I have to act all posh?”
Caspian frowned and shook his head, he would never make her act differently, “no, of course not! There’s an open bar by the way,” he smirked.
Y/N bit her lip, looking conflicted before she threw up her hands, “fine, I’ll go with you, only for the open bar.”
Caspian grinned, feeling so relieved and he threw caution to the wind as he pulled her into a hug, the scent of her sweet perfume had mixed with the cigarette smoke and it made Caspian feel light headed, “thank you!”
Y/N laughed as she patted him on the back, “don’t mention it,” she pulled away from him and nodded at his empty glass, “want another?”
Caspian bit his lip, he did want another one but he remembered the promise that he’d made to his friends, “I can’t, I’m meeting my friends in a bar on the Upper East Side.”
Y/N nodded as she flicked away the butt of her cigarette, her face becoming stoic and closed off, “of course you are,” her snarky attitude was back in full force and Caspian noticed that her eyes had hardened.
----------------------------------
Tonight had been a very confusing night, in more ways than one, firstly Caspian had asked you to be his fake date for his friend’s wedding, and secondly, you had actually accepted his invitation. Though, it was only for the open bar. You were eternally grateful that it was only one date, you couldn’t imagine going on more fake dates with him. You wondered what his parents were like, they were probably awful.
You got quite a scare as you unlocked the door to the loft and walked into the living room to see Lucy’s face glowing from her laptop light, it was like something out of a horror film, “jesus, Lu! What are you doing up at this time?”
She grimaced at you as she lowered the lid of her laptop, “working on an English paper, I would have done it in my room but I would have given up ages ago if I was tucked up in bed,” she laughed before taking a proper look at you as you threw your keys into the bowl by the door, “what happened to you?”
You bit your lip as you got a bottle of water out of the fridge, “Caspian asked me to be his fake date for his friend’s wedding, and I accepted,” you still couldn’t believe it, you were willingly going to be spending more time with a man that you couldn’t stand.
A grin spread across Lucy’s face as she gasped and clapped her hands, looking very excited, “this is amazing! Do you have anything suitable to wear?” before you could even open your mouth, she shook her head, “no of course you don’t what am I saying? I love your style, Y/N but it’s not really wedding friendly,” she laughed, looking over at you fondly, “we’ll have a look at what’s in your wardrobe in the morning.”
You shot her an amused glance; you were far too tired to argue, “fine, that’s fine. Goodnight, Lu. Try and get some sleep sometime this year.”
“Night, Y/N,” Lucy laughed and you could still hear the excitement in her voice.
You sat cross legged on your bed, eating a chocolate pancake and drinking some orange juice, watching as Lucy stood in front of your bed with her hands on her hips, looking at the choice of dresses. She ran her hand over a lace one that was pretty but the dark colour wasn’t really suitable for a wedding. You still wanted to look appropriate; you didn’t want to stand out like a sore thumb.
“Are these all the dresses you have?” Lucy asked with a sigh and you nodded as you put your empty plate on your bedside table.
“You know it is, Lu,” you yawned, Lucy had woken you up at the crack of dawn so you could both go through your wardrobe; she was acting like a kid at Christmas.
She sighed, shaking her head, “I don’t think that we can really make any of these work sweetie, want to go on a proper New York shopping spree?” she asked and you had to admit that it sounded like a good idea.
“Today?” you asked, biting your lip as Lucy nodded, “fine,” you laughed, getting up off your insanely comfortable bed, “let me get in the shower first.”
Lucy nodded with a beaming grin as she squealed, “okay! I’ll meet you downstairs when you’re ready! I hope it won’t be too busy on a Sunday.”
You huffed out a laugh as you started the shower so the water could warm up, it was New York, no matter what day of the week it was, it would always be busy. While your tired muscles relaxed under the spray of the hot water, your mind went racing. You wondered why you were so bothered about what you were going to wear to this damned wedding. Maybe you didn’t want to give Caspian’s parents the satisfaction of knowing that you weren’t good enough. Maybe you had something to prove. One thing was certain; you definitely weren’t dressing up for Caspian. After a leisurely shower, you got out, shivering in the cold air as you blow dried your hair and got dressed before taking your dishes into the kitchen.
“Well, well, well,” you laughed when you saw who was in the kitchen, “you’re here again, don’t you have your own place?” you smirked at Caspian as you stole a piece of toast off Ed’s plate, kissing him on the cheek when he exclaimed.
Caspian narrowed his eyes at you as he took a sip of his drink, “I do have my own place, but I come over just to annoy you, Y/N,” he laughed, playful scorn spread across his handsome face.
“Sounds about right,” you mumbled, taking a bite out of the crispy toast.
Ed looked between you and Lucy, what are you guys up to today? Does it have anything to do why Lucy looks like Christmas has come early?”
You glanced at Caspian who was looking at the both of you with interest, a slight smirk on his face but before you could answer, Lucy was already speaking up, “Y/N’s been invited to a wedding,” she shot a meaningful look at Caspian, “we’re going to go shopping for an outfit. Speaking of which, we’d better get going.”
Ed nodded as he shrugged and went back to his food, as you walked up to the door with Lucy, Caspian caught up with you, “Y/N,” he trailed off and looked at Lucy.
She winked at you, not so subtly and you felt a blush rise to your cheek as Caspian let out a deep laugh, “I’ll meet you outside, Y/N.”
You nodded, looking after her before you turned to Caspian, “you know that you don’t have to get a whole new outfit, I want you to be comfortable, Y/N.”
Too late for that, you thought to yourself as you bit your lip and shrugged, “it’s fine really, I don’t have anything that’s really appropriate for a wedding, I’ve never been to one,” you admitted with an embarrassed smile as Caspian raised an eyebrow, “and plus, once Lucy gets an idea in her head, there’s nothing that anyone can do to stop her,” you smiled, sharing a rare laugh with him. The edges of Caspian’s eyes crinkled as he laughed and his eyes shined. How have you not noticed that before?
Caspian opened his mouth to reply but Edmund interrupted his unspoken words, “if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought that you two were having an adult, civilised conversation,” you rolled your eyes as you heard the laughter in his voice.
Both you and Caspian took a couple of steps away from each other, matching looks of scorn on your faces, “never,” you said in unison and you saw a flicker of a smile on Caspian’s face as he went back to join Ed. You stared after him for a moment before you shook your head and went after Lucy.

Morgan in invisibility robes, holding Icarus; This will be important latter, and beats a generic picture of a wagon.
Tale 21: What The Wagon Was For (chapter 1 - Old Junk 1/7 ) part 6. Stories of wizards
no warnings
A red plastic wagon; Something you might find at a toy store. Used to carry children, and their things, on family outings. Like maybe a zoo or park. Its primary colour scheme is nearly offensive, in it’s obvious and off-putting simple design; Possibly intended to spark joy.  It is worn, scratched from years of use, and a bit dirty form being left outside. The noble wagon is but neglected, old, wise, and beloved.
A pale blue antique styled bike. White leather on the curved handles, to match the worn seat and accents. The bell that was once painted red, but does not ring as it should; Yet, this instrument is satisfactory in its performance. It is a good bike; a quinte dutiful bike. There is a latch for a basket, weaved of thin strips of pastel, and there were tassels on the handles, before you inherited it. It was once belonged to your mother.
A winter Nordic crocheted hat; in speckled ivory, navy, and red. Made by your uncle. The pompoms at the ties and top, still in mint condition. It goes with the worn flannel navy trench; you think it looks cool. It actually makes you look impoverished. A cotton t-shirt, with argyle on it; A satisfying geometric pattern, that can convey numerous colours that would be atrocious together in any other circumstance. It was custom made, and you own many; just in different equally terrible colours. But mostly white, navy, blue, red and pink. These Garbs are not lone, for there are a pair of worn runners, that you will soon outgrow. Once white, but now beige. Once tidy, but now torn. Purple and red along the sole and sides, because a designer that year thought that was a good idea; it was the only colour scheme that didn’t offend you. You settle. Often. This outing attire is not complete without ripped worn jeans, that you shouldn’t wear; The knees are green and ripped, and the ankle hems torn off.
Band-aids and gauze, on your face and wrists. Maybe you should buy some foundation. You don’t want people to notice. You want them to stop noticing. There are so many scars, scrapes, and bruises; You don’t know where, when, or who gave them too you. You spend a lot of your allowance on first aid. The rest is for books of fantastical tales.
“Morgan, I asked you to bring objects that spark joy to therapy. To explore positivity in your life. These are very odd and specific items, that probably tell interesting tales. But you’re a book worm, and those things are for adventures.” Leo Greenwood asked. He was both curious and desperate. This was his fifth meeting with Morgan, and all he knew was that the boy jittered from anxiety, didn’t speak, and was a mage. Leo couldn’t help this poor boy, if he didn’t know him. Leo was hoping his request would be catching Morgan with honey, and would make him open up. Leo knew Morgan was knowledgeable of magic, and practically a historical encyclopedia; But this private counseling room was not a class room. Leo didn’t want to hear about magic, he wanted to hear about Morgan; Something Morgan was obviously less encyclopedic about. That was why he was there. As accurate as Leo’s assumptions about the objects Morgan brought were, the conversation remained one-sided.
Morgan sat twiddling his thumbs. Icarus, his golden eagle familiar, was perched on his shoulder. Icarus would talk for Morgan, but Leo forbade it, as he wanted Morgan to have the confidence to speak for himself. Leo’s familiar was Dolly, a Maine Coon cat. Familiars say something about inner nature. This suggested there was a regal, brave, and polite something underneath that cowering youth. Also, that there was a large, soft, tame someone inside Leo’s seemingly professional exterior.
“What about the wagon? We can start with one object.” Leo inquired. Morgan shrugged. The wagon and bike were leaning against the bulletin, next to the door. There was a motivation poster with inspirational vapid photography on it; And another with cartoon animals.
“You brought so many things; it makes me think you have a lot of meaningful things in your life, and thus a lot of love to go around. I hear from professor Fyrstan and Woodwick, that you are a passionate young man,” Leo pushed. Morgan stayed silent. “It is full of a variety of loot today. Is that important too?” Leo continued, trying a more upbeat tone. Morgan looked destroyed, but nodded a little. Progress. Leo smiled.
“This place is confidential right?” Morgan murmured. Leo adjusted his seat and leant in with excitement. The boy was indeed, not mute. For now.
“By law! This office is a safe place, Morgan.” Leo said sweetly. Then Morgan took a deep breath and looked off to the side, at the succulent terrarium. Leo’s smile faded. Morgan was so anxious all of the time, Leo had never seen him take a breath. More over, he was a seer, and when magic seers take a breath like that, it means a lot of information is coming your way.
“Each week, for years, I put the same things in the wagon.” Morgan said. That was an anticlimactic answer, For such a deep breath. Leo looked around, tapping his pen. He nodded for Morgan to carry on.
“Tucked neatly in the wagon, each week, are the following assortment of things:”
A worn brick red plastic container; full of thumbprint cookies
A large glitter encrusted brand name coffee tumbler; with mermaid logo.
An empty six-gallon jug
A 1L of half and half
A freezer bag full of homemade dog treats
One of the old tabletop games found in storage
A cassette player, and tape, filled with a playlist of catchy children’s songs
A therapy bullet journal
A six-meter garden hose
Large bronze bridle
Hathing fyords Celtician tea: rich black
Foxer’s box take out and all-day dinner double fish and chips with times two extra chips
Half a packet if cherry losings
Baby Blue’s perfectly pressed sugar cubes
A counterfeit alchemized rhinestone and silver men’s business watch
Thick hemp rope
The gossip page of The Weekly Passing’s newspaper
An opaque athletic water bottle filled with skim milk
The Pony Paradise Boutique hand crafted equine grooming brush
A 12” hard wood dowel
A bag of plastic party kazoos
“Goodness Morgan; What in the two veils are you doing each week, as a mage, with such an assortment of oddly specific, and very mundane, things?” Leo asked. He was completely stunned and perplexed. Morgan looked up and made eye contact with Leo for the first time. Then he shrugged, but this time with personality; suggesting the answer should have been obvious.

Something Domestic: Chapter 4
A/N: Hey y'all! This is a new TRR AU I’ve been working on. This story is told in first-person narrative, from Riley’s (MC) POV. There will likely be smidges of canon in this, but not too much. Thanks for reading, and please leave feedback, and/or if you would like to be tagged.

Synopsis: When Riley Brooks takes a new job as a nanny for the affluent Rhys family in New York’s Upper East Side, she assumes she’s just going to care for the children of the couple who hired her. But instead of just school pick-ups and afternoon snacks, she also finds herself spending time with Liam, the handsome divorced dad. Can Riley control her feelings for Liam while still performing the job she was hired for?
All characters are the property of Pixelberry Studios. Thanks for allowing me to borrow them.

Chapter Summary: Riley and Hana celebrate their new jobs and meet some new friends.
“HOLY SHIT!”
Hana’s voice rings throughout the apartment. I spring from my bed, dropping the book I was reading, and rush out of my room to find her standing in our living room, holding a thick white priority mail envelope.
“What’s going on?” I ask her.
Her eyes travel from the envelope to mine. “It’s a letter from Valtoria High School.” She flips the envelope over in her hand and slides her finger under the flap. Her eyebrows pinch together as she slides the letter from the envelope and begins reading. Suddenly, her eyes widen.
“Oh my god, it’s my acceptance letter!” she shouts. “I am officially the next music teacher at Valtoria High School!”
I leap across the room and scoop her up in a crushing hug. “Hana! That is so amazing! Congratulations!” We both start jumping up and down squealing as the envelope slips from her hands and falls to the ground with a light thud. She stops jumping and looks down to where the envelope landed, giggling as she picks it up.
“What else is in there?” I ask.
She pulls out the remaining contents of the envelope and spreads them out on the coffee table. I glance over her shoulder to see a brochure, two pamphlets, some documents, a map of the school’s campus, a bumper sticker, a pencil, and a notebook with the school’s logo on the cover. I walk over to the couch and take a seat, picking up the brochure. I open it up to a random page and scan the content until something catches my eye.
“Is that what I think it is?” I ask, re-reading the list of donors for the school. Hana leans over and shrugs. “Oh yeah. His company is a major donor. I think they sponsor a bunch of the school’s extracurricular events. Gotta love those tax write-offs.”
My eyes glance back at the page, and it’s like the words are slapping me in the face.
GOLD LEVEL SPONSOR: Cordonia Enterprises
Fucking hells. Of course, he gives a shitload of money to the local schools. He’s one of the richest men in the city and he obviously gives a shit about someone other than himself. The woman who ends up with him is a lucky bitch. Fingers crossed it will be me.
“I wonder if he’s willing to donate to the “Riley Brooks is a Broke-Ass Bitch and needs money to pay off her student loans Foundation,’” I say.
Hana giggles. “He is. It’s called your paycheck.”
I narrow my eyes at her and chuck a throw pillow in her direction, narrowly missing. She ducks out of the way and sticks her tongue out at me in triumph. “Okay, enough fantasizing about your new boss’s bank account. I’m officially employed, so this calls for a celebration,” she declares.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?” I grin suggestively.
“Put on your best drinking dress. We’re going to the Double Tappe.”
***
We arrive 45 minutes later to see a line outside, which is weird because this place is rarely busy. It’s one of the reasons why we like coming here. I scan the line of people. The crowd doesn’t look like our usual mix of college students and barflies. We make our way up to the front where the bouncer, Spike, stands with a permanent scowl and a clipboard in his hand.
“Hey, Spike. What’s going on here?” Hana asks.
Spike turns his head and sees us, and his demeanor instantly changes. “Hey! My two favorite patrons. What are you guys doing here on a Saturday?” he asks. Hana and I haven’t gone out on a Saturday since we were in college. The type of people who barhop in this city on a Saturday night aren’t really the type of people we usually associate with.
I sling an arm around Hana’s shoulder. “We’re celebrating mine and Hana’s new jobs.”
He grins wide. “That’s awesome! Congrats, you two.” He cocks his head toward the line. ”Unfortunately, we’re having a private party tonight. Some big wig and his older brother are having this company get-together. Invite-only.”
My pulse quickens. Could it be? I ponder name-dropping him to gain us entrance. I mean, what good is working for a billionaire if you can’t throw his name around to gain perks in this city? I try to sneak a peek over Spike’s shoulder at the guest list.
“Any chance there’s someone on that list we could pose as to get in?”
Spike shakes his head. “No can do, girls.”
Hana frowns. “Come on, Spike. We’re regulars. One drink. We’ll be in and out before anyone notices.” she pleads.
He looks between us sympathetically, then down at his clipboard. “Tell you what. Sneak around to the back and knock twice. I’ll text Chuck to let you in. If anyone catches you, say you work for the catering company and get the hells out of there. Got it?”
We both side-hug Spike before sneaking down the alley towards the back. We maneuver around the dumpster, reaching the back door marked “Deliveries.” Hana lightly taps twice on the door, and a couple of minutes later, a large man with a red beard pokes his head out the door.
“You Hana and Riley?” he gruffs.
“That’s us,” I reply. He nods and steps aside, allowing us to enter. We weave our way through the kitchen until we reach the bar. The lights are dim, and the walls are covered in kitschy decor. A five-foot mahogany bar runs along the back wall, where bottles of various liquors adorn the shelves. Not surprisingly, the whiskey takes up two shelves.
Two pool tables take up one side of the bar. A single dartboard hangs on the wall near the back. On the other side: one of those state-of-the-art jukeboxes where you can select songs from an app on your phone, and a 10x10 dance floor. This place is the definition of a dive bar.
I’m shocked at the size of the crowd. There has to be at least 100 people here. I don’t think the Double Tappe has seen this many people at once. Pretty sure this place is overcapacity. I hope the fire marshal doesn't show up.
The owner Drake is standing behind the bar — a dish towel draped over his shoulder — talking to two men, one younger, one older. The younger man’s hands gesture wildly as he speaks. He then says something to the older man and elbows him. The older man looks over at him for a split second, before scowling into his tumbler of scotch.
I grab Hana’s hand and pull her to the bar. “Hey, Drake. Two whiskey sours, please,” I say, holding up two fingers. He looks over to us, and his eyes light up.
“Hey girls. Fancy seeing you here,” he replies. “It’s about time someone orders a normal drink.” As he gets to work mixing our drinks, the younger man to my right turns to me.
“He wouldn’t know a real drink if it slapped him across the back of the head.”
I turn to get a better look at him. He has olive skin and dark brown coiffed hair, He’s wearing a silk black dress shirt with gold leaf details and dark washed jeans. The older man sitting next to him is wearing a maroon blazer and navy turtleneck with charcoal-colored slacks. The two of them couldn’t be more night and day if you tried.
“Come on now, whiskey sours aren’t so bad. In fact, they’re my favorite drink.” I reply.
He smirks. “You clearly haven’t tried anything with Viniq. I think you’d like it. You seem like the type of girl who enjoys a shimmery cocktail.”
Drake looks up from what he’s doing, shooting the man a death glare. “We don’t serve that garbage here, Maxwell.”
He laughs. “Dude! Do you realize how much more money you could rake in every night if you stocked it?”
“Glitter doesn’t belong in drinks. That’s a hill I’m willing to die on,” Drake growls as he sets our drinks on the bar in front of us.
Hana and I giggle and take them. I scan the crowd once more as Maxwell and Drake continue to bicker over alcohol. The patrons are all dressed to the nines, sipping colorful cocktails. Some of them are wearing the latest pieces from Fashion Week. I’m pretty sure that woman by the jukebox is wearing a tiger print jumper. These people definitely aren’t your typical Double Tappe customers.
Maxwell turns back to us. “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your names. Are you some of Bertrand’s new hires?”
Hana and I pause, glancing at each other. She busies herself with the straw in her drink, leaving me to explain our presence.
Shit, Riley. Think. What was it that Spike told us to say if we got caught? “We… we’re with the...uh…  the catering company,” I stumble. He cocks one eyebrow at me before turning to the older man on his right.
“I thought all the caterers left, Bertrand. Didn’t you send them home after dinner?”
The older man turns to his left, looking me up and down skeptically. “Yes. They were dismissed an hour ago,” He scowls. If looks could kill, I’d be a dead woman right now. “You do realize this event was by invitation only, correct?”
Our cover is blown. “Uh…” Abort! Abort! I grab Hana’s arm and start to slip off my barstool when a warm hand settles on my shoulder and squeezes firmly. “She’s with me.”
Hana’s eyes widen. My heart stops. That voice. I turn around and sure enough, there's Liam. He smiles down at me and I'm pretty sure my soul just left my body.
”What are you doing here?” I ask him, confused yet relieved.
“I’m on the guest list.”
Of course, he is. His best friend owns the bar. He probably just walked in — like an episode of Cheers — and everyone knew his name.
”You know these two?” Maxwell asks.
”Well, I don't think I've been introduced to this lovely woman here, ” Liam says, gesturing towards Hana, ”but Riley works for me.”
”Ah, another office drone, huh?”
Liam chuckles. ”She’s the kids’ new nanny.”
Maxwell smiles knowingly. ”Ah. So this is her. This guy’s been talking a lot about you.” He winks and cocks his thumb towards Liam “Well, it was nice to meet you, Riley. Riley’s friend. Have a good night.” He slides off his barstool and drags Bertrand towards one of the pool tables.
Liam extends his hand and introduces himself to Hana. He then takes the empty barstool next to me. He’s dressed down, wearing a black sport coat over a tight-fitting grey t-shirt and dark wash jeans. How does this man look so good in everything he wears? He motions to Drake, and a few minutes later, two fresh drinks appear in front of Hana and me.
”So, you’ve been telling people about me, huh?” It’s dim in this bar, but I can definitely make out a blush. “Why am I not surprised you’d be here tonight?” I say as I sip my drink.
He smirks and the butterflies in my stomach flutter. You’d need a chainsaw to cut the sexual tension in this room. His eyes look to Hana, then back to me. “Can I make a confession? I was hoping I’d run into you here tonight. I knew you hung out here a lot, and even though this was a private event, part of me was hoping you’d show up anyway.”
“We actually weren’t planning on coming out tonight, but Hana got a new job too, so we decided to celebrate.”
“Congratulations,” he says to Hana. She lifts her glass to his and nods before downing it. Liam eyes my drink. “Next round is on me.”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” I say. “We’re the ones who crashed your friend’s party. We were only supposed to stay for one drink.”
He shakes his head and waves Drake over. “I insist.”
I nod as Drake approaches us. “Hey, Li. Another scotch on the rocks?”
“Actually, three shots of the finest tequila.”
Drake nods and reaches up to the top shelf and grabs a bottle of San Matías Rey Sol Extra Anejo Tequila. He places three glasses in front of him and pours the shots, before handing them to us.
Hana picks up her glass and observes it. ”Wow! I've only ever read about this tequila. They say it has notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice.” She brings the glass to her nose, inhaling deeply like some sort of tequila sommelier.
”Wait a minute. This tequila is $400 a bottle! We can't accept this,” I say, pushing the glass away from me.
Liam frowns. ”Why not? I offered to pay. I'm not expecting anything from you for it. You work for me now and I want to thank you for taking on the task of caring for my children.”
Isn't that what my paychecks are for? I stare at the shot for a few beats, contemplating what the gesture means. He said he wasn't expecting anything. Maybe he means it. Stop overthinking it and take the damn shot, Riley. When are you ever going to get the opportunity to try something this extravagant?
I shrug and pick up the glass. ”To new opportunities,”
”To new opportunities,” Hana and Liam say in unison as we clink our glasses together. We each take the shots, garnering different reactions. Liam nods in approval. Clearly, he drinks this stuff on the regular. Hana’s eyes light up and she swishes the tequila around in her mouth, enjoying the different flavors. My face puckers and I struggle to swallow, the shot burning as it goes down. Obviously, I don't drink tequila that often.
”That was incredible. I hope I can one day afford to buy a bottle of this for myself, ” Hana says, licking the remnants of the tequila from her lips.
“It’s perfectly okay to treat yourself once in a while,” he replies. He looks down at his watch and frowns. “Well ladies, fatherhood calls. Thanks for having a drink with me.” He motions to Drake for his bill and I sneak a peek as he pays the tab. That’s a lot of zeros! “Have a great rest of your evening.” He leans over to shake Hana’s hand then rises from his barstool and leans down towards me. His hot breath tickles my ear and my face warms. Obviously from the tequila, right? “You two have fun tonight,” he whispers. “Don’t drink too much. I’ll see you bright and early Monday morning.”
He smirks as I sit there trying to catch my breath, and just before he turns to walk away, he winks at me. Then, he’s gone.

Starbucks 2018 Holiday Cups
During the holidays, memories from the past help connect us across time and distance. Simple acts can spark a flicker of remembrance – like making snow angels, serving an old family recipe and hanging sentimental childhood ornaments. The senses can cue our memories too, like the smell of peppermint or fresh-baked gingerbread. This season, Starbucks stores are celebrating the spirit of yesteryear with a modern twist.
“We started this season by looking to the past,” said Kristy Cameron from the Starbucks Creative Studio.
The Starbucks Creative team found inspiration for this year’s holiday look in one of Starbucks most time-honored traditions, Starbucks Christmas Blend, which will be back in Starbucks stores tomorrow (Nov. 2) for another holiday season. When dreaming up holiday plans more than 18 months ago, they passed around one-pound coffee bags from more than 30 years of the beloved brew. They talked about old stories, remembering an unexpected gift for a customer at the Pike Place store, and former coffee buyer Dave Olsen delivering Christmas Blend to Seattle area stores from the roasting plant in his pickup truck.
“Looking back at our heritage, we found something lovely in our own story, with beautiful coffee and flavors that come together to make the season magical,” Cameron said.
They snipped pieces from Starbucks holidays past – a star, a branch of coffee cherries, a flame. They added doses of vintage colors and patterns, like mint green and argyle and reinterpreted them with graphic flair, and a dash glitter and shine.
Starting tomorrow, Starbucks stores in the United States and Canada will be decked for the holidays to mark the return of the seasonal flavors of Peppermint Mocha (back for a 16th year!), Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, Caramel Brulée Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Gingerbread Latte and Eggnog Latte, all available hot, iced and Frappuccino blended beverages. Stores will transform with festive and warm trim and décor, Starbucks baristas will proudly wear their red aprons, customers can sip their favorite seasonal beverages from holiday cups, shop for Christmas Blend whole bean coffees and beautiful, giftable Starbucks Cards and merchandise.
“When you come into Starbucks, there’s a festive vibe,” she said. “Our customers have told us that the return of Starbucks holiday cups and beverages are a signal the season is upon us. We hope they feel the holiday magic that only Starbucks can create during this special time of year.”
Starbucks holiday cups have themselves become a symbol of the season for more than two decades. Just as they did that first year in 1997, this holiday features a series of four unique cup designs:
On each bag of Starbucks coffee, there is a sealed seam that runs along the back, called a fin. Starbucks has been adding a contrasting color along the fin as a design element for years, and the team found a way to bring that design element to center stage. A take on the iconic red cup, the Stripes holiday cup features graphic bands of bright poppy red and a darker cranberry, accented with white pale rose gold. A ribbon of black, white and Starbucks green on the back ties all the four cup designs and reappears in merchandise and store signage and displays.
“The ribbon was born out of the holiday feeling of boxing holiday presents and wrapping paper,” Cameron said. “The holiday cups feel like these presents you want to unwrap. Each one is its own gift.
Ripe coffee cherries have evoked festive holly on packaging over many years, including 2013 and 2017. In a nod to Starbucks coffee heritage, the Flora design features mint-green graphic leaves with pops of colorful bright red berries against a cream-colored background.
Starbucks Christmas Blend Espresso Roast is known for its intense flavor and caramelly sweetness. Designers used fire to represent this rich, dark roast and reimagined it as an elegant flame in the red and white retro Espresso Houndstooth design.
Stars often appear in Starbucks designs, even winking atop the Siren’s crown in the company logo. The illustration of a couple reaching up to place a star atop a holiday tree from Christmas Blend 1999 was the starting point for this year’s Stargyle design. Here the stars twinkle against a backdrop of interlinking diamonds in varying shades of Starbucks green.
Holiday Food & Merchandise
Starbucks 2018 Holiday Cups
New holiday food to savor this season includes Chocolate Swirl Brioche, a buttery brioche layered with a dark “fudgy” chocolate filling, Pistachio Honey Croissant, and the Sugarplum Cheese Danish, made with buttery croissant dough topped with creamy cheese filling and plum spread. These new holiday flavors join returning favorites Gingerbread Loaf, Penguin Cake Pop, Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop, Snowman Cookie, Cranberry Bliss Bar, Carved Ham & Swiss Breakfast Sandwich and Holiday Turkey Panini.
As the holiday season approaches, Starbucks® stores offer a cheerful collection of gifts, including shimmering cold cups, sleek tumblers, festive mugs and whimsically decorated Starbucks Cards. The holiday gifts will be available in stores in the United States and Canada starting tomorrow with more beautiful, curated merchandise added throughout the season. Find something for everyone on your list in this year’s gift guide.

5 ways to pour your creativity into promotional drinkware
No matter the business, promotional drinkware makes a great giveaway. According to Advertising Specialty Institute®, 82 percent of Canadians will hold on to a promotional product that they consider useful—and drinkware is always useful.
Promotional drinkware has other advantages as well. Studies have shown that 57 percent of people could recall the advertiser on a cup, while only 32 percent could recall one from the radio and 28 percent from television.
Drinkware doesn’t just have to involve their favorite beverage. In fact, you can help make your promos extra memorable by trying one of these five ways to use drinkware that don’t involve drinking. Getting creative can help your bottom line.
  1. Office supply holder
While there are dozens of ways to store office supplies, there’s a certain “homey” feel associated with a mug stuffed with pens, pencils and other items. A Cabano Mug or Value Coffee Mug would be an appreciated gift for new employees or customers settling into a new office. You can even include an Atlas Stylus Metal Pen with Laser Pointer and a Post-it® Flag Highlighter to help them get their desk prepped for a full workday.
  2. An unexpected gift bag
People attending trade shows, a company event or training are frequently presented with a tote bag of swag. Why not change things up a bit and let promotional mugs stand in for the tote? For instance, if you’re running a table at a health and safety training day, offer a Rounded Spooner Coffee Mug or Aztec Spooner Mug stuffed with a packet of chicken soup, a Hand Sanitizer Spray and a Bandage Dispenser.
  3. A table-top garden
Just because you’re giving someone a business gift doesn’t mean that the gift must be all business. For your employee or customer with a new house (and a green thumb), a Flower Pot Mug and a Seeded Paper Bookmark can start the recipient on a fresh, fun hobby. Even if gardening isn’t their thing, there’s a strong chance your gift will get used. Studies show 64 percent of Canadians will pass along a gift they aren’t using.
    4. Coupons, flyers and other literature
Paper items can easily get lost or left behind after a presentation, but promotional drinkware will almost certainly get taken along. Combine the two and make certain your literature, discount coupons and business cards get where they need to go! The Slim Jim Vacuum Insulated Tumbler is tall and thin, and ready to hold a hot beverage or some critical literature. The Thermos® King Travel Mug also offers plenty of space for leave-behind materials, and later, drinks.
  5. Centrepieces
The next time you have a gathering or gala, cover the table with promotional mugs—and let them hold the decorations for you!  Add a unique twist to your floating candles by putting them in a Sparkling Mug. The high sheen and bright colours are sure to be a conversation starter. And flower arrangements will look especially lovely in Glitter Travel Tumblers.
Promotional drinkware isn’t just for quenching thirst!
Promotional drinkware comes to the rescue when you want to make a memorable impression. Drinkware is versatile, and there’s no limit to the ways it can be used. No matter how you use it, these mugs and tumblers will help build your brand. For more creative ways to use promotional drinkware, check out our infographic.
