Me two hours ago: I only give gifts to six people during the winter holidays so I should see who wants handmade gifts and who I can just buy something for
Four of the six people: yeah I want something handmade
A fifth person: You can do whatever (I decided to make them a hat in bulky weight yarn cuz they got excited about the pattern and it calls for a yarn I really like working with)
Sixth person: has not responded yet (I randomly send them weird things so I asked them if they'd rather get something weird or something handmade. Knowing them it'll probably be the weird option)
I am telling myself I have plenty of time for six small projects.
I am gonna start my sibling's Dramatic Bitch lace up opera gloves that I'm drafting the pattern for myself (RIP the discontinued lace up opera glove pattern that I made myself when I was 14 and also a Dramatic Bitch that inspired this choice) today. I've cast on for a gauge swatch and I have all the ingredients I need for this and it'll take the longest so I better start now.
My grandma said she has always thought it would be fun to have a small zippered tote that has a zippered pocket that someone else made for her and that grandpa does all the grocery shopping and he could use a bag that's easy to fold up. I'm using this as an excuse to go to the quilting shop I bought Edith (serger) from cuz they are a local place and have much higher quality fabric than JoAnn's (derogatory).
My mom said she would think about what she wants and I warned her to only pick small items cuz between my other projects I can't knit her like idk a sweater in the amount of time I have.
My gf said I could just buy her something and I am keeping that as a backup and making her hat last in case I run out of steam/time.

I am up to my usual holiday crafting. For whatever reason (laziness? Executive dysfunction? Some kind of weird need to show off?) I can only make myself craft when the finished object is for other people. Anyway I'm making a puzzle ball for my baby nephew. Here it is so far (wow so beautiful):

Can't find your masking tape and don't want to brave the holiday rush just to buy another roll?
Just use that washi tape with the ugly pattern! It's basically the same thing. Now you can prevent paint from spreading where you don't want and reduce clutter!

Upgrading the 'polaroid magnet' idea of 2019 for 2023's Xmas card trades, these ones are made from wood and use actual magnets! Luxurious! |D All the poses are also referenced from actual party photos i've taken of other people, to add to the candid vibe lol.
The dreamcatcher is kind of a gag gift (yes the craft project i reffed here) for some friends. Since they don't have the ability to fight their nightmares i have offered to [try and] do it for them XD
Made from: Wooden craft polaroid (plus some backing MDF pieces), magnet, misc decorating items (glitter, wooden shapes, gel pens, paint etc). The dreamcatcher is just a storebought one with laminated paper mes wired to it

It's the time of year I might get a little sappy. But think of the kids reactions? Maybe the next great fashion designer will be sparked after seeing their designs made real.

I’ve been busy
crafting holiday gifts—
sculpting delicate hearts
from air dry clay;
reflecting on friendships
near & far—
acquaintances who left
& soulmates who stayed;
tying satin bows &
stringing wooden beads;
painting shimmering stars
to hang on glittering trees;
there’s much to do
before another year
recedes from view…
& next December
comes round again.

As promised, here's a Google drive containing a free pattern for a blackwork ornament, with instructions and images showing how I assembled it. If you make one of these and post pictures, I'd love to see them!
Stitches used: - back stitch - double running stitch - ladder stitch - blanket stitch
Materials: - Aida cloth (I used 18-count) - embroidery floss (I used 6-strand cotton DMC floss in colour 991) - cotton sewing thread - stuffing or fibre fill
More ornaments I've made this way are here, here, and here. Here's a set assembled the same way, but using cross stitch rather than blackwork.

Shameless holiday Etsy store plug!
It's that time of year again! Crafters, if you're looking for leather thimbles, I got you.
I've never been able to use metal thimbles and it was always a source of frustration because needles start to hurt your finger pretty quickly. A couple of years ago I learned how to make leather thimbles and it changed my sewing and embroidery game entirely. When I got a stack of leather offcuts, though, I ended up with way more material than I needed, so I started making extras and selling them. I started having fun with the kinds of leather I worked with and incorporating fun, colorful designs, and now I stock all sorts in my Etsy store:

I only use reclaimed leather scraps from other Etsy sellers who I've built personal relationships with, several of whom also use reclaimed leather before selling their own offcuts to me. Each thimble comes wrapped in tissue paper, packing slips are printed on recycled paper, and shipped in unbleached envelopes with labels made from recycled materials.
Whether these are your thing or not, I hope you'll keep independent artisans in mind when you're buying gifts this season! They work hard, are underpaid, and need your support more than corporations.
(Also, if you see an Etsy ad on google or in the ad space of a website, don't click on it! Search for the Etsy store's name through Etsy instead. When you make a purchase after clicking an advertising link, Etsy takes a percentage and keeps doing so every time you go back to that store. Etsy already takes 25%-33% of sellers' profits in fees, don't help them take more! Links like the above that are embedded in an individual person's post are fine, just look out for ads on the side or bottom of websites, blogs, and social media pages, as well as google ads.)
