Just a few answers to questions I've seen in the notes on this poll

What is a site skin? A site skin is CSS code that changes the way AO3 looks. This could be anything from changing the page colour to the font to the way tags look to hiding parts of the site - and more.

Where do I find site skins? There are a few places. The easiest one is in the site footer (that red band at the bottom of the page). There are four skins linked there under the word Customize, and you can click on them to see what they do. Another place to find skins is https://archiveofourown.org/skins?skin_type=Site Those skins were created years ago and loaded into AO3 for easy applicaiton. Just hit the Use button and they'll be applied to your account. Lastly, you can find skins created by other AO3 users. Some people post their code on AO3 itself, some use github or other code repositories. A lot of folks share their skins here on tumblr with images and then a link to the code itself.

How do I save them to my account? If you're using the ones in the footer or the ones linked on the Public Skins page, you don't need to save them. Those are built into AO3. If you want to create your own (or use one created by another user), that's when you save them to your account. Tap on your name at the top of the Ao3 page. Then select Dashboard, then select Skins. Tap the button labelled Create Site Skin and give your skin a unique name. Write or paste the CSS code into the big box, then hit the Submit button to save it. If you want to use it right away, hit the Use button on the next page.

What's the difference between a Work Skin and a Site Skin? A work skin changes the appearance of an individual AO3 work, and it changes it for everyone who looks at that work. This lets you turn your fic into something that looks like an email or a text chain or a newspaper, etc etc without having to use images. Work skins can also be turned off by other users, so if they just want to read the plain text of your work they still can. A site skin changes how the entire site looks - but only for you.

How do you have 100+ site skins?? I start a lot of skins that I abandon partway through. I also create skins for certain specific purposes - for example, changing the look of all of the buttons on the site - and then I can just grab that chunk of code and add it to any "full" site skins I create for the purposes of sharing. I have a lot of experiments that fail, but I keep the code around because maybe I'll learn how to fix it someday.

Can I create my own site skin if I don't know how to code? You can! AO3 has a site skin Wizard that will help you change the colours, fonts, and font sizes on the site. Go to your Dashboard > Skins > Create Site Skin and then tap on Use Wizard. Give your skin a unique title. Click on the ? bubbles to get examples of how to enter information into each box. If there's anything you don't want to change, you can just leave that box empty. When you add in colours, they must be hex colour codes, and they must include the # at the start. Any font you add need to exist on your device (so it might work on your computer but not on your phone because your phone doesn't have that font installed). You can add parent skins to Wizard skins, too. See below!

I wish I could have [X functionality] in [Y aesthetic skin] You can! If you create one site skin in order to block certain works or tags, you can add that skin on top of an aesthetic skin. To do so, edit your aesthetic skin, scroll down and tap on the Advanced button (lower left of the CSS box), tap on Parent Skin, type in the name of your blocking skin and Add Parent Skin. Then save your aesthetic skin, and the two are combined! You can also do this with those skins that are native to AO3. So for example, you want a Reversi (dark mode) skin that Shortens Long Tags and also hides the "you have muted some users" banner. Create a site skin with the muted users code:

it's a messy combination of pieces of code from other people's skins and my own changes

how to customize this skin:

FONT SIZE: at the very top of the code, change the "90%" to be bigger or smaller to change the font size within a fic

MAIN COLORS: to change the main colors, select "use wizard" when editing the skin and replace any of the four hex codes under "Background color:", "Text color:", "Header color:", and "Accent color:"

SECONDARY COLORS: find all hex codes within the code and change those numbers as you like! i changed all colors to match with the color palette of the header photo that i chose to make it feel cohesive

TAG COLORS: towards the end, the "relationship", "character", and "freeform" tags alternate three colors to make them easy to separate. in this skin they are all very similar, so you can change those to be whatever colors you like!

HEADER PHOTO: find the link towards the end of the code right before the warning tags and replace it with a link to any photo you like! it loops, so you don't have to worry about sizing or anything

FONT: i'm unsure how exactly to do this, but the in-fic font is currently set to Georgia Serif, so i suppose just go find that and replace it with your preferred font!

BORDER STYLES: wherever you see the code "border-style:", replace the word that comes after it with one of these options: none, solid, dashed, dotted, double, groove, ridge, inset, outset, or hidden

WARNING TAGS: at the very end of the code is a list of words or phrases that, when they appear in the tags of a fic, are highlighted in a contrasting color so that they are easy to avoid if necessary. you can add or remove those tags however you like, or change the warning color!

Inspired by the likes of @making-you-in-spore and others (not tagging them all for politeness), i wanted to start this blog so i could practice making skins & models in blockbench. i make them a few times a month, so not much, and figured this would be a good way to exercise those skills.

Requests are open, as well! Asks with media are currently off (due to worry of getting sent gore. Links should be fine?) I'm also willing to do pretty much anything as long as the design isn't too complicated. (sorry hoyoverse characters) . I also won't do h/rry p/tter in any circumstance along with media you'd group with it. If my request guidelines need to be less vague, let me know! and yes, i do OCs. i love ocs.

I can also do private requests if you request that in the ask and are off anon, or if you send a message.

I don't plan to script any models i make or make them useable. That would take more hours of my time than i have available for this and don't want to overwork myself. Sorry! I don't believe it will be game-breaking if you do not fully restart, but I recommend that you try to zip through the first chapters if you are only wanting to see what’s new in chapter 3.

Some notes on the update if you are interested…

Chapter 3 is quite large and has more than doubled the word count - but keep in mind that includes coding and text that is entered for multiple passages. This chapter was actually shortened from my original vision to accommodate time constraints and as the current ending point provided a natural break after a very hefty segment. Unfortunately, you will have to wait a bit to meet the last of the ROs.

Several general updates were made and even to chapters 1 & 2 were touched up. This includes:  simple corrections to typos and grammar, the altering of some values for certain variables, the addition of MC hair customization options (white hair added, option to have MC go grey as well), and some general improvements to some of the text.

The Codex was also updated with a good bit of pantheon information, the contrast color for dark mode links was improved, a link to a bug/error report form was added to the menu, and trigger warnings were updated to include things that will come up even beyond chapter 3.

Chapter 3 will continue to be refined as it did not get the amount of editing and testing that I would have liked, and there’s one or two smaller extras that I didn’t have time to add. Please report errors to me via the linked Google form in the game menu - nothing is too small. I think I caught the biggest, game-breaking, errors over the weekend, but there’s likely some issues with code floating around. If you are uncomfortable using the form, you can send me an Ask through Tumblr as well.

I hope you enjoy this little update! I found it enjoyable but not as exciting as I would have hoped (personally), though there are some very fun antics you can get up to. The next installment will have a lot more adventure (and mishaps), and you’ll finally get to meet all the main players of your story!

sometimes these will not be 100% accurate due to limitations of fantasy lifes character creator -- this may involve but will never be limited to: shortened names, inaccurate body types, hair that isnt quite right, things i havent unlocked yet, and so on and so forth

none of these will be done in the new fantasy life game because A it isnt out yet and B i want to keep this simple and easy for myself. if i end up enjoying fantasy life i or want to make more detailed characters then ill make a separate tag for it

i do not take future clothing options into account for various reasons, not the least of which being because this game has massive amounts of clothing to choose from and i dont have the time for all that. maybe someday

at present (april 11th, 2025, 6:19 pm cdt) i cannot add voice clips to posts. this is because i dont have an easy way to get them from the game and dont want to have to fiddle with bullshit to get something working -- the only reason i have the avatar maker music at the ready is because its on zophars domain already. if you have any of the avatar creator voice options on-hand, send 'em my way through a filegarden link in dms or something! help make my job easier!

i have the origin island expansion pack which adds a few more customization options and, most notably, has very spoiler-heavy names for some of these options. i will NOT be making no-dlc alts of these characters because i dont have a comprehensive list of everything it adds and i do not want to also

tagging will be like this: "#made in fantasy life #avatar source: [x] #life: [x] #body type: [x] #gender: [x]" on every creation post for organization and easy searching

i add details for recreating avatars in every post unless the requester specifically says not to, in which case i will unquestioningly omit these details

I just took a deeper look into Barbwirebrat.. and their TOS is actually wild + hypocritcal af. Long rant about my thoughts on it I'll link their TOS below, but some points that stuck out to me:

"By commissioning me you agree to my turnaround times. Please note that they are flexible and may be shortened or extended by any amount of time." They are giving themselves the "legal" ability to just infinitely push off someone's art indefinitely. (Quotes because its not legal but they're certainly attempting it with the wording)

"Refunds may be discussed depending on the situation." No solid refund clause in the case of above where it can be pushed back past the buyer protection period on paypal. Key word on MAY.. not WILL, but MAY be discussed. Insinuating you might not ever get the option. Never give this mfer the chance to push your commission past the buyer protection oh my god. "You may not copy, trace or reproduce my designs, even if you own them. No heavy inspiration, colourpicking, siblings/parents or breedings, or copies of my designs. Tracing or heavily referencing my work is not permitted" Hmm where have I seen that before.. oh, I remember! Like how Barb ripped off Bratblush's brand, art style, and designs? Even going as far as to rip off Bratblush's bases, including their Eevee one? "Credit must remain intact at all times, even if redesigned by another artist. "creator and designer" must remain as me and only me. do not add other artists to the creation of my designs." Basically Barb is the only artist, ever, and nobody else can ever touch their work or be credited for it. Kinda weird and imo this should be against TH's rules to demand nobody can be credited for redesigning your OC on the profile.

TL;DR this person is actually delusional since their TOS contradicts their entire art existence riding off of Bratblush's popularity.

I cannot recommend enough to NOT buy Barbwirebrat's adopts or commission customs from them, they are a sea of red flags. If they've done this to Bratblush who is well known and popular, who's to say they aren't ripping off entire -designs- from other users on TH as well, especially lesser known ones?

It's one thing if you want to use their art style, especially since your original artwork looks completely different than the bases you've ripped off and the quality control (anatomy, mainly) is not the same.. but to go this far while also pretending like you invented your format, and demanding others can't do the same to you? Wack.
