Grey seahorse: a multigender and/or gender-nonconforming person that presents their gender through the color grey
Grey cuttlefish: a queer woman that presents their femininity through the color grey

dont know whos front right nkw but hi its chaos system can you explain whats going on in splatoon to us badly maybe we don't go there but are so curious (only if u want )
haii :D okay so i'm not sure how familiar you are with splatoon so here's a few basic things to get out of the way first:
all of the music is diegetic, and is made by bands that exist in-universe!
each game has an "idol group", which is a group of in-universe celebrities who sort of act as the mascot for that game. whenever you open the game, there's a little news segment run by them where they tell you about any updates the game has gotten, what maps are in rotation, special events, if the biblically prophesied mutant salmon invasion is happening, etc! and they also do songs and stuff.
every, like, month or so, there's an event in the game called a Splatfest! basically, a question is asked, such as "Which is better? Cats or dogs?" and you pick a team, and then you will fight against the other team! this will last like 48 hours, and whichever team does better wins the splatfest and whatever option they chose is now legally the correct one! so if team cats won the "dogs vs cats" splatfest that would been cats are officially factually better than dogs forever
oh and also whenever there's a splatfest, each idol picks a different team, acting as a sort of mascot for that team
the games do not receive support forever, but they like to go out with a bang via a final splatfest! these are the biggest ones, and they actually have an influence on the NEXT game!
the first game's splatfests were run by the musical duo Callie and Marie Cuttlefish. they're called the Squid Sisters, because they're cousins. and the final splatfest in Splatoon 1 was Callie vs. Marie!
Marie won, so in the next game, Callie defected to the side of the enemy
Splatoon 2's splatfests were run by Pearl Houzuki and Marina Ida, who make up the band Off The Hook! they're also lesbiabs. the final splatfest of Splatoon 2 was Chaos vs. Order!
chaos won, so Splatoon 3 takes place in the mad max desert that was once known as france
Splatoon 3's splatfests are run by the musical group Deep Cut, consisting of Shiver Hohojiro, Frye Onaga, and Big Man:

you can guess which one is Big Man.
currently, the final splatfest of Splatoon 3 is happening. the Grand Festival!! it's the biggest one there's ever been!!!!!!
the theme is: "Which is most important to you? Past, present, or future?"
and for the first time, instead of each idol representing a specific team, each team is represented by an idol group from one of the games! Past is the Squid Sisters, Present is Off The Hook, and Future is Deep Cut.
anyways
for this splatfest, there is a completely new hub world!!!! the Grand Festival Grounds! and it's really really cool this splatfest is so insanely big :] there's a bunch of stands everywhere selling stuff, all of the characters are attending the festival, and there's three big stages at the venue where each of the idol groups can play.
they have fifteen fully animated choreographed performances involving lights and pyrotechnics and dance moves. all of their songs are like four minutes.
THAT IS A FULL HOUR OF FULLY ANIMATED CHOREOGRAPHED PERFORMANCES FOR THE FICTIONAL CELEBRITIES IN THE SILLY SQUID GAME.
that's also fifteen song remixes just for this event.
and this is only the beginning! this is the opening - this is phase 1. even more is to come on saturday night and i cannot WAIT. all of the idols have special Grand Festival outfits that they, noticably, are not wearing at the concerts!

(also look at how pearl and marina holding hands is the central point of the composition of this piece)
the new map they added to the game specifically for this splatfest, the Grand Splatlands Bowl, has not been used yet! and after we had to do a whole thing last week where we saved it from the salmon
+ the new song, Three Wishes - we still don't even know what it's for yet!
there's a ton of other special little things but that's the grand gist of it! i hope this made sense!
i love infodumping about splatoon i do it to my mom all the time thank you for another opportunity to do so :) ask me about salmonids next i love them
oh since this is anon i should probably @chaosites so that you still get notified for it. ok bye!

I love your Orbulon and space bunnies are sea creatures propaganda how do you even come up with that it’s so cool‼️
Thank you!! A fun fact about me is that i am actually insane about invertebrates. So when wario presented me with two made-up invertebrates i went a little insane. I do play it kind of fast and loose with these guys so i'm sure an actual specbio enthusiast would not be impressed but i'd say 40% of my creative decisions are also based in what would be the funniest (such as making sure the polyp looks like a bowling pin)
I have hinted at this via my orbiology poster but i have an entire orbulon corkboard living in my head so here is the bulk of that iceberg
Based on orbulon's aversion to heat, big ol' sunglasses, and milky complexion, i think that he is the interstellar equivalent of a cave olm. Instead of an underground cave i think he lives on a gas giant far from his system's sun, which would be cold, dark, and have a thick atmosphere for him to "swim" through. ("What about the air pressure?" You say. "Hold your horses" I say. "It will all be worth it in the end.") This reason i think it is worth it is because my model for this is uranus, the gas giant whose atmosphere contains notable amounts of, and i cannot stress this enough, methane. Tell me a more warioware planet
I also think that his planet is predominantly blue, not just because of the youranus thing but also because whenever he gets really scared he literally turns blue. Check it out

I think this is NOT the same as blushing, but a fear response similar to cuttlefish changing color to camouflage with their environment via chromatophores in their skin. Unfortunately when orbulon is scared shitless he does a bad job of it and just defaults to his home planet color, but when he actually thinks about it he can change his color and shape to be whatever he wants (such as a pretty woman).
3. On a similar note, orbulon does not have teeth but he can shapeshift his mouth to create the facsimile of teeth. This is a cool party trick but you need to know that the fake teeth are still squishy and it's really gross.
4. Orbulon's eyes are uber-sensitive to light which is why he needs those impenetrable coke-bottle sunglasses. He also doesn't have eyelids, so during his 24-hour naps his eyes are open the whole time. Sweet dreams.
5. This is going to veer out of plain biology and into his society so i'm not going to go too deep into this but basically i think that telepathy is an integral part of intraspecies communication and that their society is very communal as a result. Think like ants with pheromones, not a hivemind in that they lose their individual identities but they're definitely less atomized than humans. They're also wildly intelligent and have canonically developed time travel technology to the point where the average person can just have a time machine built into their car. This gives a little insight into orbulon's mindset here

(I don't think he's very clever by orbulon standards)
This is getting too long and crazy so i'm going to top it off with one more thing. I know orbulon is supposed to have smooth skin but in my heart i wish he had the texture of these bad boys

#If any of this is contradicted by the new game that just came out do NOT tell me i will cry#not art

hey so hi so i may or may not have gone insane abt mollusc blood/hemocyanin a while ago.
so. squid blood transfusions. could it happen????? they dont have blood types to complicate it because they dont have red blood cells or a hemocyanin equivalent (blue blood cells?) cause their blood protein is just dissolved in the blood. so like. could you hypothetically do a blood transfusion between squids. the world needs to know.
You have gone insane. And I did not give you permission to take me with you dammit! >:(
So, Squid Blood Transfusions, huh?
I fell down a research rabbit hole so lemme take this from the start.
1. What 'bout them blood transfusions?
So in order to take blood from a donor your blood types have to be compatible. Your blood type depends on the antigens displayed on the surface of your red bloodcells. The antigen receptors in you blood are located on the surface of B-Cells and T-Cells. If they recognise antigens not present on your own red bloodcells they trigger an immuno response (as to why a blood transfusion with a non-compatible blood type is so dangerous for you)
There are 36 different systems in which you have a blood type, the ones most relevant being the ABO and Rh Systems, these make up the blood types you know like A-, O+, AB-, ect.
Source
Interestingly, in fish only 3 Systems of blood types have been found, for example Tuna's blood can be sorted into the Tg System.
Source
2. What the fuck is wrong with squid blood???
The blood of most invertebrates is not red, they don't have red bloodcells and transport the oxygen through their body in different ways than us. Notably, Octopi, squids and cuttlefish use blue haemocyanin. This has lead to their blood often being falsely labelled as blue, even though its more translucent.
Source
Their blood also lacks an equivalent to T-Cells and B-Cells so it lacks the receptors as well.

So Squids don't have blood types.
Source
3. But what if they get sick???
Cephalopods have a very efficient immune system, it's just very different to ours and barely understood. Research is still ongoing, but from what I've understood they have many different responses to health threats.

Source
4. So Squids can do blood transfusions?
Technically yes. From what I've figured. Though obviously theres other factors of complication that I might have overlooked/misunderstood and as I said the field is still very much left unexplored.
I'm very much not an expert in cephalopods (when I set my ask button to 'ask me about squid' It was more a shits and giggles thing, Im so sorry anon lol) but ive dedicated an evening to researching this and discussed it with my mum who studied medicine for what thats worth.
I hope I could affirm your theory, researching this was really fun. Also Anon u wanna be friends I don't think I can be normal anymore haha. \hj TT.TT

~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
Our carriages thrust through the press of the rejoicing crowd that presently filled Liberty Square. Arnold Way was the street that formed the north side of the Square. The Presidential Mansion took up the entire north side of the Square.
Green Jacket Marines kept back the cheering throng, as we filed into Number One, Arnold Way, the residence of presidents and the seat of administration since the revolution. We were met by none other than President Benedict Arnold, himself. Now in his seventies, he was still hale and hearty. He grasped the hand of each of us as we entered the foyer and greeted us by name.
“Commodore Marks! Gentlemen! You are most welcome! Your journey has been long. To make up for that, dinner has been laid out on the sideboards in the dining room. Commodore Martin is here along with many other notables ... Even,” and here he smiled yet more broadly, “the ambassador of the United Kingdom, Sir Lional Humphries.”
In a high good humor, he conducted us to the dining room. Many candle sconces provided the light, showing high ceilings and a simple understated elegance of decor that spoke volumes about the man who lived here and ran the country.
Among the guests, I saw the unmistakable frowning profile of Sir Lional. I also saw the jubilant Mr. Smollet, chief naval architect of the Cuttlefish Project. Admiral Martin waved to me from his place at the table. I was headed his way, while some heads turned in surprise. Sir Lional’s eyes followed me with calculation. I was stopped by a hand on my elbow.
A firmly commanding yet friendly voice said, “Tecumsah, I have not been able to spare the time to visit your mother’s lodge, these last few years. I have missed my other family. We write back and forth, but it is not the same as a visit. Will you share news from home with me?”
“Mister President, ...” I began, turning to him.
“Such formality from one who first made himself known by spitting up on my weskit,” he interrupted with mock severity. “What happened to ‘uncle Benny’?”
About the room many mouths formed ‘o’s of surprise. Even Sir Lional seemed taken aback.
“I thought the occasion too formal for such familiarity,” I excused myself.
“Never. This dinner is as much a chance to see you again, and hold converse with a friend old and honest enough to hold me in no awe, as it is to celebrate mighty deeds of war. After this pow-wow is over, we shall have to have a long talk of old friends and family.”
“I shall look forward to it,” I replied with true enthusiasm. “Is that centerpiece on the buffet what it appears to be?”
“Indeed, to honor you, son of my spirit. Bison hump and haunch from the Onida herds,” he said in perfect Iroquois.
“Then I shall have to get some, to honor the giver, Uncle,” I responded in the same language. Then in English, I added, “That food looks too good to miss and I see another old friend over by the buffet. I haven’t seen Jean since the Academy. He was a year behind me, and I sort of took him under my wing.”
“Go then, youngster, so long as we talk later.”
“My word on it.”
I made my way across the crowded room to the buffet.
By the sideboard was the French Ambassador, Jean, Count du Coucy, an old school chum. He had been fortunate enough to be studying at the Continental Congress Naval Academy when the French threw off their royalty. When Napoleon had come to power, the First Citizen had instated him as Ambassador, and returned his estates.
“So, filling your plate with meat and treats outranks words with your President?”
“Jean,” I smiled, “it is good to see you again. Letters, be they ever so often, are no substitute for a handshake and word face to face. Mister Arnold and I were merely arraigning time for a real talk, later.”
Sir Lional was edging closer, to overhear what a mere Lieutenant of the Navy might have to say to both the President and the French Ambassador. I decided to give him an earful.
“How is it that you never mentioned Mr. Arnold during our Academy days?” inquired Jean.
“Then, as now, he hates notoriety. He is an old family friend from the days of the War of Independence, no more.”
“No more!?” Jean seemed shocked. “The hero of the Great War, the conqueror of Canada, the man who formed, and brought to your Union, the Indian State, Senator for how many years, and now President twice over, only an old family friend? How did that happen?”
“It goes back to when my grandfather, on my mother’s side, Tall Bear, saved the general’s life at the second battle of Ontario ...” I began, but was interrupted.
“Do you mean the Tall Bear, who took the colonies of St. Laurence and New Found Land?” cut in the impeccably British accents of Sir Lional.
“Why yes, I do. My grandfather. Though I wasn’t talking to you,” I rebuked gently. “Yet you are welcome to join us. The minced bison pasty is excellent.”
“I thank you, but no. I am not here to eat. You have the ear of the President and the French Ambassador.” He shot a poisonous look at Jean. “You must be a valuable go-between. I am surprised that President Arnold would allow you to be risked in a small squadron at war on the high seas.”
“The risk seemed small enough. Besides I have been involved in improving the range and accuracy of our Congreves for the last ten years. I wanted to see them perform in field conditions.”
“Should he be hearing that?” asked Jean. “It is a secret, yet.”
“My tongue is not so loose as all that. We will be unveiling them tonight. Besides, little goes on in the Continental Congress that Sir Lional does not know of. You have had reports of our activities in rocketry for what, about ten years?”
Sir Lional had the grace to look away in embarrassment. “Something like that,” he muttered.
“If you are not here for the party and food, why are you here?”

Explore Busan - Korea's Beautiful Coastal City!
The Busan Cooperative Fish Market
The beautiful blue waters of Korea's largest portside city, Busan! At the Busan Cooperative Fish Market, located near the Jagalchi Market, the day begins at early dawn as merchants gather for the fish auction. Here, we were able to experience a very different scene from your typical city. The morning was gorgeously bright in Busan.
Gwangbok-dong & The PIFF Plaza
The coastal city of Busan is now growing internationally. The very first place we visited was the crowded Gwangbok-dong and the PIFF Plaza. There were many movie posters and handprints of popular stars at the PIFF Plaza. If you think about movies, you think Busan. And if you think about Busan, you think movies. When I visited the PIFF Plaza, there were hand-shaped prints everywhere.
That's right. Every fall, Busan opens an international film festival with attendances by all the top stars, both national and international, making it a fun night of entertainment. This film festival continuously grows year after year to present the largest venue for moviegoers. Every street that stretched out from the plaza was filled with places to eat.
I'd also like an order of Odari please. Like this, fried cuttlefish is prepared on the spot, and all the shops here offer deliciously prepared food that will make your taste buds tingle. Wow. This looks great. Do you see this? First of all, I'd like to say that I'm sorry, but I'm going to dive in and have a bite. Ah! delicious. You can all come visit the PIFF Plaza to taste the amazingly chewy Odari. But Busan is still another world for most. If you are worried about getting around in Busan, the Busan subway system connects you to all the popular tourist attractions including the PIFF Plaza.
Haeundae Beach
This is the first place that comes to mind for most when you mention Busan. Escape from the sweltering heat of the summer and take a visit to see the refreshing blue ocean waters! This is Haeundae Beach. The Haeundae Beach is Busan's most popular summer spot, and it seems like waves of vacationers have already started showing up. The ocean waters blow away the summer heat and the smiles on the faces of summer vacationer seem exceptionally brighter than ever while playing in the refreshingly cool waters. This is also true for foreign tourists as well.
Leisure Experiences
Let's go~!! Wouldn't you like to experience what it feels like to take a ride on a motorboat and speed your way around Haeundae's ocean waters? Not only that, but you can also cut through the cool ocean winds on Haeundae's oceans while surfing, Or take a cruise on a luxury yacht tour, along with other various unique leisure experiences that are prepared for you.
Taejongdae
Among all the venues that are available here, I chose to take a ride on the ferry to take a closer look at the jade colored waters of the ocean while touring the Taejongdae regions.
Here, the vast ocean waters meet the beautiful cliffs of Taejongdae, Where the Yeongdo Lighthouse now stands tall, painting a magnificent picture.

If you've ever pondered an octopus, you've probably scratched your head over just how it is they're able to match their environment so quickly and accurately. Its almost magical to watch a cephalopod in action change not only the color of their skin but at times even the texture as well. How is that?
CHROMATOPHORES!
(Well the color part anyway. Texture is different.)
"Chromatophores" are pigmented organs controlled by rapid nerve impulses to radial muscles. They come in colors of brown, red, orange, and yellow (but not every one of these is present in all species). When the eyes send visual information to the brain, the brain will send signals through the nervous system that stimulate the radial muscles connected to these colorful "sacs" to shorten.
Doing so affects the skin's appearance as the way the incoming light reflects the color changes. Pigments may be large or small, deep or shallow, smooth or rough and be layered on top of one another creating different effects depending on what is revealed. They are generally less dense in squids while the opposite is true for octopi, and that density can vary across different regions of its body.
In many species these organs are used for camouflage since it can render predators unable to discern its outline among the rest of the terrain, but its also been observed to have social or signalling utility as well. Fascinatingly, as showcased in the GIF above, some cuttlefish have been seen to "flash" colors at prey in order to entrance them. The common octopus also employs a similar strategy, which has been called the "Passing Cloud". "Deimatic" displays on the other hand are signals to predators in which many cephalopods will make themselves wider and larger while creating dark rings against a pale backdrop. Between those of the same species, signals may communicate mating intention or fighting capabilities.
Source:
Messenger, J.B. “Cephalopod Chromatophores: Neurobiology and Natural History.” Biological Reviews. vol. 76, 2001, pp. 473-528.
Chromatophores are are incredibly nuanced. They can be used in a variety of contexts and in complex ways that have still yet to be understood. They have the potential to teach a lot about nonhuman communication — exchanges of meaning beyond language.
Stay tuned for more marine musings 🐙

marina (tall lesbian) and pearl (short lesbian) are idol duo off the hook! pearl comes from a rich family, and tried to do a solo career but struggled with it due to a destructive voice (literally. physical destruction) and her heavy metal music just not growing in the industry (one of her songs from this time is #$@%* dudes be #$@%* sleeping, aka fucking dudes be fucking sleeping, assumedly a song about her being pissed at her teammates)
meanwhile, marina was an octarian soldier and tech, a high ranking member in fact. however, during the events of splatoon 1’s hero mode, the squid sisters (callie and marie) sang the calamari inkantation, snapping her out of things and making her choose to desert the army. she, not knowing how to speak the inkling language, met pearl, who taught her. marina realized pearl also liked music and the two decided to form off the hook together!
they’re mostly present in the dlcs, splatoon 2’s octo expansion and splatoon 3’s side order. octo expansion follows agent 8, who deserted the army as well. however, they weren’t as lucky as marina was, and they (while just kinda wondering) fell into the deepsea metro (a subway station controlled by an ai) with agent 3 (agent of splatoon 1’s hero mode) and captain cuttlefish. captain cuttlefish tries to radio for help from the other two agents (agents 1 and 2, aka callie and marie) but marina and pearl intersect the broadcast and offer their help! leading to them arriving by helicopter as agent 8 completes the climb with the others (after beating the ai out of agent 3), marina figuring out how to officially kill the ai, and pearl using the power of her voice to fucking destroy it!
thing is, that ai wanted to control all of them, just like it did for so many other octarian deserters who just wanted to see the surface. marina wants to free them, so in splatoon 3’s side order she begins creating the memverse! she creates smollusk to be kinda the “host” of the memverse, enlists the help of another agent, agent 4 (splatoon 2 hero mode agent), as the security system, and then also codes a drone version of pearl to help the memoryless/sanitized ex-octarians find their memories and stuff. this is where i need to start mentioning that in this dlc.. yeah pearlina’s probably 100% canon now. one of the dev diaries marina writes something along the lines of “and i’ll put myself at the top of the spire, and pearl will lead them to me! wait, would that make me like a princess? i’ll make a tower worth you the climb, brave pearl! <3” there’s a bunch of other things that are like “woah. lesbin” so like. there’s no way they ain’t canon you can’t hide the truth nintendo

sorry that this was long i am so normal but YIPPEEEEEE GAY SQUIDS
if for whatever reason u wanna learn about splatoon just ask 🙏🙏🙏 i may be a little bit autistic over this game. i also may or may not link a character. i also may or may not have three alters from this franchise alone (i am haunted)
i heard the tall lesbian and the short lesbian won a twitter yuri poll via an irl. sk uh tell me about pearlina

Thanks for giving me the overview on team click! All the characters sound interesting though is it ok if i ask you to elaborate on bennet himself? Also considering the alterna logs that rotm gives us dya think holly would know abt them or not?
ye ofc!! i've got a thing lemme see if i can find it
here we go!
Born with an awful stutter, Bennet was the target of bullying as a child. His family made sure to encourage him and took him to speech therapy, where it improved considerably, but the stutter is still present in his speech. His family moved to Inkopolis when he was ten, and the atmosphere was entirely different. He found more people that didn’t care about his stutter than those that did, and it helped him reach out of the shell he’d built up around himself. He started going out more and discovered that hey, making friends and talking to people can actually be fun. Once he hit fourteen, he was determined to join turf wars. He tried out different weapons and found he was decent with chargers, so he stuck with it and became rather skilled with them. His stutter didn’t matter much on the battlefield with the random assignments of teammates and lack of communication between them.
When it did matter was when he decided he wanted to join an official team.
This was one thing that, while his family wanted to support him, weren’t sure he’d be able to do. Constant fast-paced communication with teammates was vital, and he wasn’t capable of perfect speech.
That was five years ago. He’s been successfully leading his own team for four years and has learned to communicate quickly otherwise- hand signals and clicks and snaps that he and his team worked together on creating a system of.
That was the backstory I'd written up for the group rp thingy, and since then he's been in a couple other rps! His team has now hit five years going as well, right in the interim between splatoon 2 and 3 :V it was a very emotional moment for him, mainly because even despite his persistence he himself wasn't even sure he was going to make it to one whole year, much less five! So he and his team are still going strong in splatoon 3, and they've even started to check out the competitive scene over in splatsville :0
As for the logs in alterna, I definitely think that she would! She's certainly curious enough to read through them, but I don't know that it'd really grab her attention much since she's rather intent on finding cuttlefish and therefore hopefully dj and also therefore hopefully her squad.

Beast creeps into the city through civilization’s magnificent sewer technology! Borderlands and frontiers of the Empire transgressed by the octopus from beyond the edge of the world! It has an unquenchable thirst for the fish sauce in YOUR kitchen pantry!
---
Present-day New York and the ancient Roman town of Puteoli have at least one thing in common: the sewer systems of both have been said to harbor rather unusual creatures. [...] The legend of the alligators in the sewers turned out to have older antecedents [...]. [T]he common core of the stories is the hostile intrusion of a wild beast, an octopus, into the urban environment [...].
---
The ancient legend is [...] preserved in two variants, both incroporated into the fabric of literary works on natural history. The first is included in the work of De natura animalium [...] by [...] Aelian (AD 165/170--230/235), [...] of Praeneste, Italy [...]. Written in Greek [...]. The second comes from a Latin sources [...] in the voluminous Naturalis historia [...] authored by Pliny the Elder (AD 23/24--79). [...] The ancient legend features a multifaceted and even contradictory animal [...]. The most basic trait is its liminality: the octopus often tends to straddle or transgress two cultural categories at once, fully belonging to neither [...]. The entire body of the octopus was a contradiction [...], with the numerous, fluidly flexible tentacles [...]. Aelian mentions craftiness [...], the octopus was a symbol of intelligence [...]. Its ability to change color in accordance with its surroundings was interpreted to be [...] cunning (Theognis; Plutarch ...). [...] In Aelian’s version the octopus emerged through the city sewers, whereas in Pliny’s it descends from the sky by climbing up and down a tree. [...] The octopus transgresses other categorical boundaries as well.
Aelian states that the octopus “despised and disdained the food from the sea and its pasture.” Its unquenchable desire for pickled fish or fish sauce, the much-loved garum of the Romans, means that it abandons its own natural, unprocessed food for a quintessentially human gastronomic product.
---
Garum [...] provided the Roman diet with salt [...]. It was an important object of trade and Iberian garum was deemed to be some of the very best [...]. The Iberian merchants functioning as the human protagonists in Aelian’s variant of the legend [...] represent the archetypal garum merchants [...]. The octopus’ monstronsity [...] in Pliny’s [account] gains an added dimension because of the Roman cultural conceptions of the prodigious bounty of the Iberian waters. Many types of fish and marine animals, such as conger-eels, lampreys, trumpet-fish, purple-fish, cuttlefish, and octopuses were thought to attain giant proportions there. [...] [T]he waters around Italy had been depleted through excessive fishing at this time [...].
[T]he motif might also be related to the notion that Iberia was situated at an important geographical and conceptual boundary, which may have imbued it with liminal qualities. The Pillars of Hercules, i.e., Gibraltar, had long been considered the last stop before the vast innavigable ocean [...]. In the first century AD this idea of a boundary took on renewed relevance with the Roman conquest of large parts of the known world. Roman ambition needed a new purpose and the legendary, dangerous ocean beyond, which few had as yet penetrated [...] could provide the basis for dreams [...]. Thus, the monstrous octopus might be set to fit into the general paradigm [...] of the wonders at the edge of the known Earth. [...] In terms of social status, the benefits of producing and propagating such accounts were actually so great that Roman officials of the early Empire actively competed with each other in producing them [...]. Pliny himself captures this pervasive ambience of the marvelous nicely when he describes the story he is about to relates as “close to the wondrous” [...].
---
Aelian’s account exploits the notion of the intruder entering the city through the sewers [...]. The most celebrated sewer was the Cloaca Maxima [...] [T]he sewers were counted among the greatest of all Roman accomplishments [...] Some went as far as to compare the city of Rome with Babylon and Thebes -- alluded to as “the hanging cities.” Rome similarly “hung above” the torrents of its magnificent sewer system (Pliny the Elder Naturalis historia ...; Dionysius of Halicarnassus Antiquitates Romanae ...’ cf. Strabo Geographia ...). The sewers furnished the foundations on which Roman greatest rested [...]. On the other hand, turning a sewer into a triumphal arch, as a great Roman proverb stated (Cicero Pro Placio 40.95), did not succeed in ridding the sewers of their more unpleasant connotations. [...] In terms of metaphor, the sewers were frequently associated with the less noble parts of the body: the guts (Cicero ibid; Varro ...). [...]
The fear of sewage clogging up the drain during floods and causing an intrusion of alien filth into the home is believed to have been a [...] factor in keeping private households disconnected from public sewers. [...] This anxiety about the sudden reemergence of dirt recurs in the legend narrated by Aelian [...]. The octopus strengthens its liminal position by transgressing not only conceptual boundaries between cultural categories, but also the physical boundaries between nature (the world of the sea) and culture (the sphere of the human city). By traveling between these spheres through the manmade sewers, the octopus metaphorically conquers the human domain by stealing through the underground structures of the city to the surface.

So turns out i had done writing practice a while ago, and i had never posted it!
So heres a drabble i wrote about agent 8 having a mildly horrifying time!
Worn down and forgotten pipes rattled, and leaked droplets of milky-white, limescale tainted water. Light bulbs close to blowing out, buzzed and flickered in their moldy, soon-to-be defective fittings. Obscured machinery hummed as they kept unknown systems running. The rhythmic tapping of steel-soled boots walking on ancient train tracks harmonised with the melodies of the metro's tunnels.
Agent 8 didn't know how far these tunnels went. When it had rang through the intercom that his train to the new station had been delayed due to emergency maintenance, he had simply just dropped down from the platform onto the rails, and just began his walk. Some part of him knew that yes, this would indeed lead to a waste of time, but he didn't know why he didn't follow that train of thought.
Perhaps he was feeling extra stubborn that day, perhaps he didn't want to wait around for the next train. Perhaps he didn't want to give up, and return to the dingy motel he had rented for him and cuttlefish, with no earned CQ points to keep them housed or fed for the night.
As his stomach grumbled, he cursed himself. Why did he think it was a good idea to walk all the way? What was the point? By the time he got there, he would be too exhausted and starved to complete the test, and would have nothing to show for it. His wounded arm was still healing from what little rest he could get, why did he think it was a good idea to go to a physically intensive test in the first place?
Why was he still pushing himself? Why was he still walking to his destination? As he stopped and knelt to catch his breath, he wondered why it had taken him this long to realise why this was a bad idea. Hot tears started to well up in his eyes as cursed himself for his stubbornness. What did he think he was accomplishing by acting like this?
Not only was he putting his own health at risk with this dumb mission, he was putting captain cuttlefish in danger too! If something happened to him out here, the old inkling would be left alone in the metro, with no way to support himself. Agent 8 had already had a run-in with the repossession agent of Kamaboco, who would stalk the metro and its cities for anyone unfortunate enough to be left in the dust. He shuddered to think of what that vulture would do to captain cuttlefish if he wasn't around.
'.....This is stupid.' he thought. 'I’m being stupid'. He stood back up and turned to walk back to the station he came from, with his figurative tail tucked between his legs. As he walked back however, he couldn't help but realise something off. First he was questioning why he was so compelled to act the way he did today, forgetting what was at stake for him, when it had worn into his mind since he arrived. It took him a while to realise that the tunnel he was walking through, which used to be angled at a curve, was now completely straight. And that the distant lights that used to be working, had silently blown out after he had passed them.
He wasn't be a stranger to walking through dimly lit areas. If he walked this far without meeting anything, he still shouldn't on his way back. As he was walking, he noticed that the only noise present in the tunnels were the tapping of his steel soles against the cold hard ground. The rattling and dripping of the pipes, the buzzing of the still lit bulbs, the humming of the machinery. At some point, they had stopped. He wasn't sure when, and he didn't know why he couldn’t notice it until now.
What he did notice though, was behind him, the faint sound of what sounded like...flesh...sliding on the ground. He immediately swiveled around and was met with the sight of an arm on the ground a couple of metres away from him, immediately retreat back into the shadows of the light bulbs that had somehow gone out from this side as well.
As the feeling of revulsion and wrongness gripped him, 8 bolted away, not turning back. The noise of the machinery had returned, but what was once a distant hum, was now a deep rumble so intense, it rattled 8's chest.
8 didn't stop, he just kept running his way back to the station he had abandoned, eventually running past the lit area, into the darkness with no light in sight. He didn't know how long he kept running in the dark like that, hearing the distant slithering of whatever had been chasing him, keeping up behind him. Everything was brought to a halt as 8 fell, not because he had tripped, but because something had grabbed a hold of his foot, and would just not let go.
Before he could get his bearings, he felt like he was being grabbed by more hands and forced down onto the ground, one hand grabbing a hold on his tentacles and shoving his face into the cold metal of the railing. Had he not fell, he still would've been rendered paralysed like a deer in the headlights, by the bright unmistakable light of a train, barreling towards him.
BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
8 jolted in his bed with an undignified squawk, as he heard a distant crash. He shot up, panting as he as he got a bearing of his surroundings. It took him a second to realise that yes, he wasn't in the metro anymore, he was dreaming, and he was safe and sound in Agent 4's house, and it was thankfully daytime. 'oh sweet sweet rapid coherent lucid thoughts', he though to himself 'oh how I’ve missed you.'
This sudden clarity didn't stop him from emitting a pathetic squeak, as he heard the same horn from his nightmare blare out again. "Oh! Good morning 8!" he turned to see Agent 4 sitting up in her bed to look out of the opened window. 8 breathed a sigh of relief, if 4 was this calm, then whatever that was happening was surely not the end of the world, "4...what was that?". "Ah, a car crash happened out on our street" She said as she turned away from the window, "it was pretty loud, but hey! As far as i can see, no ones been hurt!"
She grimaced as she heard the loud yelling of people outside arguing over damages and who's suing who, "you'd think they'd be more happy about that though."

Cuttlefish --not so cuddly
I. Classification
Animalia
Bilateria
Protosomia
Lophozoa
Mollusca
Cephalopoda
Coleoidea
Sepiida
Sepiidae
Sepia
officinalis
Integrated Taxonomic Information System, Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758)
II. Biology
Vagabond Lifestyle
The Sepia species can be found across temperate and tropical seas except off the coast of the Americas. A range of species can be found in Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia.
Each species of sepia live in either tropical or temperate waters. They are saltwater dependent so they all inhabit the ocean. They can either live in shallow or deeper waters (as low as 2,000 ft beneath the surface). Some species migrate from warm to colder temperature as the seasons change.

Armed and Dangerous
The Cuddlefish Cuttlefish has 8 arms along with 2 tentacles. These are specialized for holding on to prey like fish or shrimp. It lures prey by altering its skin color while waving its arms in a mesmerizing fashion to draw in unsuspecting prey. When the prey is near enough, its tentacles shoot forward and entangle the prey. The arms of the cuttlefish also has the ability to suck in water into its mantle cavity in order to appear larger when trying to ward off predators.
Beak
Much like a parrot’s beak, this is used to subdue prey or as a last defense towards predators. It lies deep in the base of the 8 arms of the cuttlefish. Beaks are one of the characteristics scientists use to identify species from each other.
Big Brain Energy
What makes this organism diverse may be attributed to the size of its brain. It is considered as one of the largest of any invertebrate. It can handle a variety of inputs from different senses like sight, smell and “sound” caused by pressure waves. Based on various studies, the cuttlefish can use visual cues in solving mazes. They are considered as intelligent as octopus and pigeons.
Cuttlebone
Image retrieved from: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/camo/anat-nf.html
Cuttlefish can control their buoyancy! Through their cuttlebone, a porous internal shell, they can adjust gas levels in the forward chamber and water level in the rear chamber, to control the buoyancy to rest in the water column.
Eye see you
Image retrieved from: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/camo/anat-nf.html
The cuttlefish is considered to have the most highly developed eyes in the animal kingdom. It is able to see in low light and can detect polarized light. While humans only reshape lenses to see, these organisms reshape their whole eye. It has a “w” shape on the pupil which helps control light intensity entering the eye. Cuttlefish have amazing eyes that can detect differences in polarization, and can shift its lenses forwards and backwards. They can see behind them!
Fintastic form
There are specialized fins on either side of the mantle that helps the cuttlefish reposition and glide through the water. It looks like a flouncy skirt when used to maneuver. It can help the cuttlefish go forward, backward and even in circles.
Early bird catches the worm. In this sense, the fins are used by smaller males to beat other larger males gain access to females.
More to Love
The cuttlefish has 3 hearts where two pump blood to the gills and one that circulates the oxygenated blood to its body. Its blood is a blue-green color because of hemocyanin, a copper containing protein that transports oxygen in most invertebrate bodies.

Secret Weapon
Since the cuttlefish is closely related to squids and octopi, it also has an ink sack that helps it ditch or distract predators who rely on sight. There are two ways to eject ink: one is to create a smoke screen behind the organism as it jets away or it can create a decoy by releasing ink in the form of pseudomorphs which are bubbles of ink surrounded by mucus that are about the same size as the cuttlefish. Dopamin and L-DOPA are present in the ink which can temporarily paralyze the sense of predators who hunt by smell.
youtube
Hairy details
There are lateral lines that consist of tiny hairs in the mantle of the cuttlefish that are sensitive to pressure waves. They are sensitive to 75 and 100 hz. These hair cells can be used as a defense mechanism by detecting movement of surrounding predators around the cuttlefish.
Mantle
Cuttlefish locomotion is heavily dependent on the mantle. When escaping predators, water is sucked into the cavity and the mantle muscles expel the liquid with great force so that the organism can move in the opposite direction. The water exits through the funnel which controls the angle of the spray. The mantle aids in respiration by bringing water up to the gills where oxygen is filtered and released into the bloodstream.
Reproductive organs
Males have a reproductive arm that inserts into the female’s buccal area, the area where the spermatophores are stored. Females accept more than one mate which leads the males to spray water through his mantle into the female’s buccal area to wash out other males’ spermatophores. Once ready to lay eggs, the female uses her arm to wipe the spermatophores onto the eggs.
Life as we know it
Image retrieved from: National Geographic Photo Contest 2019
In the springtime, after females lay their eggs they soon die. After two months, th eggs start to hatch. This process is highly dependent on water temperature. Once hatched, cuttlefish babies feed on small crustaceans and rapidly increase in size. Once big enough, the cuttlefish soon reach sexual maturity wherein the males mature much faster than the females. In ideal conditions the cuttlefish reach adulthood at 18-22 months. Their life span can reach 12-24 months

III. Relationship
Cuttlefish is an economically valuable marine species. Just like their cousins the squid and octopus, cuttlefish are a food source for humans. They are found in most temperate and tropical waters and the market for cuttlefish is large in Asian countries. In Japan, large cuttlefish are eaten raw as sashimi and the smaller ones are packed and frozen for cooking or sometimes dried (surume) (Nash & Thorpe, 2003).
The cuttlefish has an internal shell called the cuttlebone. This internal shell usually gets washed up to the shore and is picked up by beachgoers, collectors, and researchers. There aren’t many uses for the cuttlebone. Research on the effectiveness of cuttlebones as a supplement for caged birds are limited. However, from the research of Galal (2019), cuttlebone meal as dietary supplements for Japanese quails improves egg number and egg laying rate. There is also an increase in fertility rate and the body weight of the chicks.
Oil is also harvested from cuttlefish liver. In a journal article by Meivelu Moovendhan et al (2018), the oil from the liver of Sepia pharaonis was evaluated for its quality characteristics and biological activity. They found out that the oil contained Vitamins A and E, and nine fatty acids. Among the fatty acids present, Linoleic acid, DHA, and EPA had higher amounts.
According to Mehanna et al (2011), cuttlefish are overexploited in the Southeastern Mediterranean waters. The 45-day closed seasons are not effective, rather, they suggest that trawl selectivity should be improved. Also, the protection of spawning grounds through the establishment of MPA is necessary for improving stocks.
IV. Did you know?
Cuttlefish are also called “chameleons of the sea” because of their ability to camouflage. They can change their color through the help of specialized cells in their skin called chromatophores. Aside from color changing, they can also mimic the texture and shape of objects around them. They extend and retract their papillae in their body to change their skin’s texture.
Male cuttlefish change its color to attract femates. They can multitask, changing the color of half of their body to attract mates, while displaying aggressive coloration on the other side to ward off other males. In order to get a mate, a male cuttlefish also do “cross-dressing” and disguise himself as female. Since females only have three pairs of arms, a male even hides his fourth pair of arms and pretends like he’s carrying an egg. A real master of disguise!
Cuttlefish can hypnotize their potential prey by displaying pulsating light and color.
