I love the little guy. Last week one came into our bathroom through an open window so obviously I had a little photoshoot with him and dre different hats on him on my phone. My personal favourite was the 🎩

21st of August 2024: Pacific Banana Slug

Today I’ll be telling you about the Pacific Banana Slug (Ariolimax columbianus), one of three species of banana slugs [1]. They are the largest land mollusc of North America [2] and the second largest slug in the world, reaching a length of up to 25 cm [3].

They live primarily in the USA and Canada in the temperate rainforests [4]. They have however also expanded outside of this range, being found in European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden as well [5]. They are named banana slugs due to their colouration ranging from yellowish to dark brown or black, oftentimes with spotting, making them resemble bananas. However, these exact patterns may vary depending on location, where islands with more vegetations tends to produce spottier slugs [3].

They’re omnivorous, being willing to eat both fruit as well as dead animal waste. While they obviously aren’t as efficient in seed dispersal in terms of being able to carry them long distances, their density makes up for it in part. They can also do secondary seed dispersal by feeding on the excrement of other animals [6]. They tend do come out to eat most around dawn, while the humidity is still high and temperatures haven’t crept up yet. For similar reasons they also don’t mind dusk [7]. Their faecal microbiome can also change depending on season [2].

Finally, they are also known for biting off their partner’s or their own penis at the end of mating [5]. Just thought I should throw that in there.

It was found in a piece of bark in a forest in northwest England
