Hocus Pocus 2 is a 2017 American Halloween comedy fantasy film directed by Adam Shankman. The film stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson sisters. It also features Oakes Fegley, Thora Birch, and Tobias Jelinek.
In the film, the now grown-up Max Dennison moves to Los Angeles with his family, where he encounters Allison, a fan of Hocus Pocus who unknowingly resurrects the Sanderson sisters on Halloween night. Walt Disney Pictures released the movie on October 20, 2017, grossing over $8 million worldwide. Critics generally panned the film for its lack of originality and humor; however, some praisedMidler's performance and the visual effects.
On October 9, 2015, it was announced that a sequel to Hocus Pocus was developing at Disney Channel with work already underway. On February 16, 2016, it was confirmed that original cast members Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker would be reprising their roles as The Sanderson Sisters in the sequel, with Kenny Ortega returning to direct from a script written by Scarlett Lacey. Production began in March 2016 at Universal Studios Hollywood and concluded that May.

Hocus Pocus 2 Release Date on Netflix
We all know and love the 1993 classic film Hocus Pocus, don't we? The Sanderson sisters are some of the most iconic movie characters ever. And who could forget that amazing scene where they're singing "I Put a Spell on You?"
Well, we may be getting a sequel to this beloved film. According to sources, Disney is currently in talks with director Adam Shankman to helm Hocus Pocus 2. Jen D'Angelo is writing the script, and there is no word yet on whether or not Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, or Kathy Najimy will reprise their roles as the Sanderson sisters.
There is also no word on when this sequel would take place, although I'm sure it would be set after the first film's events. And as for a release date, nothing has been announced yet, but I'm guessing it would premiere on Disney+ or Netflix since that's where most of Disney's live-action remakes have been debuting lately. What do you think about a potential sequel to Hocus Pocus?

Hocus Pocus (1993)
Tumblr media
There aren’t many Halloween-themed movies fit for both little children and their parents. This - but mostly the annual showings of the film by Disney - is why I believe Hocus Pocus has become a cult classic. Though the plot may not be original and there are a couple of rough bits, the special effects are quite good and its trio of witches is memorable.
On Halloween, 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, witches Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) are hanged after draining the life out of a little girl to restore their youth. Before their execution, Winifred casts a curse that will resurrect them if a virgin lights their Black Flame Candle during a full moon on All Hallows’ Eve. In 1993, Max Dennison (Omri Katz) tries to impress his classmate Allisson (Vinessa Shaw) while taking his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) trick-or-treating and accidentally bringing the three sorcerers back to life.
I get why the movie is a fan favorite… without feeling like I will ever crave to see it again. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are clearly having fun as this trio of dimwitted spellcasters. All three have iconic looks that would be a lot of fun to bring to life for your own October 31st celebration. They provide a couple of good laughs here and there. As for the heroes, the young stars are appealing, particularly Thora Birch. Their characters are pretty stock, leaning towards bland but when they’re teamed up with Thackery Binx (voiced by Jason Marsden), a 300-year old boy who was transformed into a cat and cursed with immortality, you can’t help but smile. Seeing a live-action talking kitty is just delightful, whether you’re watching this movie or an adaptation of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch.
The biggest issue with Hocus Pocus is that it doesn’t know what to brew with its ingredients. Sarah Sanderson flirts with practically every man she sees - but so what? It’s just something for Parker to do while Najimy sniffs around for children and Midler scolds them for their blunders. All the witches need is one child for them to stay alive past sunrise but they’re so inept you never feel threatened by them. This might be a feature for young children watching but for grown-ups, the threat is non-existent. The film plays with the idea of becoming a musical in two scenes. First, when Sarah lures a child to the Sanderson home with a song, then again in the present when Winifred (not Sarah?) hypnotizes the adults at a Halloween with a rendition of I Put a Spell on You. Another idea that goes nowhere, though I'm sure fans would call it one of their favorite scenes.
You could draw the heroes' arcs with your eyes closed, making the villains a standout by far. They aren't badly written, it’s just that you’ve seen everything there is to know about them elsewhere, from the older brother who doesn’t appreciate his younger sister until she is threatened to the generic high school bullies who prey on him and the pretty classmate he befriends and will eventually share a kiss with. For a brief moment I thought maybe the film would play with the idea that Max is a virgin. Maybe he and her would… but then I remembered this is a Disney movie made in the early ‘90s.
If you’ve never seen Hocus Pocus before, you expect it to be this big deal thanks for the star power and the fact that we’re still talking about it in 2022. The truth is, this movie is workmanlike, at best. Unless you grew up with Hocus Pocus, you're unlikely to call this an instant favorite. Its popularity might even leave you scratching your head. More Halloween Reviews!
In my continuing series of Halloween movie reviews, I'm going to be covering Hocus Pocus! Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus is one of the more iconic and fondly remembered Disney Halloween movies for millennials and zoomers.
Synopsis:
Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, "Hocus Pocus" centers on a new kid in town, Max Dennison, whose family has recently moved to Salem, Oregon. He's dragged along to babysit his little sister Dani while trick-or-treating and accidentally unearths the local legend of the Sanderson Sisters: Winifred, Mary, and Sarah- a trio of witches who vowed to come back on Halloween night 300 years after their execution. Max, Dani, Max's crush Allison, and a cursed cat named Binx must work together to defeat the witches before they gain immortality.
Tumblr media
Thoughts:
This movie was absolutely hilarious. I know the witches aren't supposed to be the main characters, they're the bad guys but they're honestly the most entertaining characters of the whole film, particularly when they're the only ones with musical numbers. The plot with the kids doesn't age as well (particularly the many references to him being a virgin) but its still overall enjoyable.

Fandom Newsletter #4
Today is Friday, the 26th of October, and Welcome back to another Fandom Newsletter!
Writers: Atlas, Blackpurrl, Fyne, YoursTruly Editors: Fyne and YoursTruly
“Oh my God, Karen! You can’t just ask people why they’re white.” ~Mean Girls
Let’s get started!
First to YoursTruly with the Horror, Hannibal, Tim Burton, Animation, and Gaming fandoms--
Horror: Horror fans love the new Halloween movie! The movie has been a massive success among fans young and old! The movie gives off a nostalgic vibe, even referencing the older movies several times throughout the film. However, if you’re going to see this movie, stay until after the credits, there’s a little surprise at the end.
Hannibal: The Fannibals have began trying to bargain with show runner and producer Bryan Fuller for another season. The show left off on a not so satisfying conclusion, and many fans want more. Bryan Fuller has even teased the idea himself quite a few times. Will we get another season one day? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Tim Burton: Disney is offering, throughout the month of October, Halloween themed cruises. They even offer an onboard show featuring Jack Skellington and Sally. And you can even meet these characters for pictures! Now that’s a cruise! Also- The Nightmare Before Christmas celebrates its 25th anniversary this year!
YouTube: YouTube recently crashed worldwide for two hours. YouTube hasn’t said much about the incident, but problems like this are becoming more and more common on YouTube. Many people are wondering what the causes of these issues are.
Animation: Goretober is in full swing! Many animators have been uploading their daily Goretober art.
Gaming: The season of scary game releases is upon us! October is the month where many creators on platforms like Steam and Gamejolt are releasing their horror games in anticipation for Halloween.
Now to Blackpurrl with the Harry Potter and Bands fandoms, along with World News--
Harry Potter: Countdown to Fantastic Beasts: 27 days!
Bands: Did you know, about twelve hours of songs are uploaded to SoundCloud every minute? Insane!
World News: Denmark Shooting for the Digital Stars
Next to Fyne with the Sherlock, Supernatural, and Spooptober fandoms, as well as the weekly positive news--
Sherlock - Ever wonder how our beloved show even came to be? Apparently, for years, writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss took a train to and from Cardiff while working on Doctor Who, and discussed various projects they were interested in doing. One that kept coming up repeatedly was a modern-day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. This reportedly went on for some time (with neither man making any particular effort to get it up and going) until Moffat’s wife, Sue, invited both men out for lunch. Her place of choice just so happened to be the Criterion, a watering hole and eatery in London’s Piccadilly Circus. It just so happens to be the same place where the fictional John Watson (Sherlock’s best friend) first hears of the famed detective. The two men got the hint and began working on the series, bringing us our show that we have today. I think we all owe Sue a little bit of a thank you, don’t you?
Supernatural - Did you notice that (according to Archangel Michael in the episode The Song Remains the Same) Dean and Sam come from the bloodline of Cain and Abel? So is this important? Or is this just another coincidence?
Spooptober - This year is the year that Halloween movie Hocus Pocus reaches its 25th anniversary. The premise of the movie is this: After moving to Salem, Massachusetts, teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani and their new friend, Allison. After dismissing a story Allison says is superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.A family favorite movie that almost everyone has seen and that is playing on at least one channel nearly every night of October. If you haven’t seen this iconic movie, you definitely should go channel surfing at some point this month.
Positive News - The words we use to talk about mental health can perpetuate stigmas. A new portrait project featuring people who have mental health issues aims to make us think again about the language we choose.
Lastly to Atlas with the Voltron, Musicals, and Movie fandoms--
Voltron: This fandom is a ticking time bomb set for December 14th. We are all going to die.
Musicals: George Salazar ships Boyf-riends!
Movies: Who else wants a live action Corpse Bride?
Now back to Blackpurrl with the weekly movie review--
Movie Review: Hannibal Rising
This movie relays the story of Hannibal Lecter’s childhood. Although most of the especially gory parts are not on camera, the viewer eventually knows exactly what became of the victim. It provides an interesting plot, and explains why the famous cannibal does what he does. I would not recommend this movie to anyone under thirteen or anyone who cannot handle tragic stories. Overall, I’d give it a 10/10.
And back to Fyne with the weekly trivia fact and quiz--

(This isn’t physiologically proven, its literally just a test I made up in my free time so don’t take the results to heart and please do not be offended)

HOCUS POCUS Sequel May Be In-Development!
For years, fans have been pining for a sequel to the Disney Live-Action film Hocus Pocus (1993). The Halloween hit follows moody teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) who explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and town hottie Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstition, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy). With the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop their immortal plot.
For years there have been rumors of a possible sequel. Fake poster art has cropped up on Facebook accompanied by news stories of the alleged reboot for years. In July 2014, it was announced that Disney was developing a supernatural film about witches, with Tina Fey was on board as a producer and star. However, Deadline debunked rumors that the film was related to Hocus Pocus. In November 2015, Bette Midler stated in a Facebook Q&A that “after all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no” in response to a question about a sequel. In June 2016, character actor Doug Jones mentioned that Disney had been considering a sequel, and behind the scenes discussions were in place to possibly continue the series. Until now, none of these rumours have come to fruition.
But appears there may just be a light up ahead.
Mick Garris, co-writer of both the Hocus Pocus story and screenplay, recently opened up to Forbes about the future of the film;
There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel. It might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead.
  Asked whether not the iconic Sanderson Sisters, portrayed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will return, Garris said;
I think they are, yeah, I think they are. If they don’t do that I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?
Here’s hoping the most recent discussion on a possible sequel doesn’t disappear into a puff of smoke. While we wait, why not enjoy a viewing of Hocus Pocus along with 31 days of Horror Movies in our Halloween marathon?
