The Crow (2024) | Trailer
The 2024 Crow movie seems to be a cross between John Wick and Constantine and I'm here for it. #TheCrow #MovieTrailer #BillSkarsgard #FKATwigs #DannyHuston Trailer here ⬇️
Writer: James O’Barr (Comic book series), Zach Baylin & William Josef Schneider (Screenplay) Director: Rupert Sanders Stars: Bill Skarsgård, Danny Huston, FKA twigs, Laura Birn, Jordan Bolger, David Bowles The movie looks grounded and gritty like the first John Wick movie yet it still has a fantasy/supernatural undertone. The revenge movie aspect is very John Wick but the supernatural aspects…

Wonder Woman (2017)
Tumblr media
In a recent interview, Patty Jenkins commented on the ending of Wonder Woman, how the finale was originally “smaller” but that “the studio made me change it”. This prompted me to watch it again. Would I detect what might've been? Instead, I was reminded of how much I love this movie. The conclusion is big and extravagant. This doesn’t make it bad and before then, there’s so much to love in its action, romance, and characters it sweeps you off your feet.
Raised on magically isolated Themyscira, Princess Diana (Gal Gadot) and the Amazons learn of World War I when American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on the island’s shores. Convinced that this “war to end all wars” is orchestrated by Ares, the god of war, Diana leaves with Trevor as her guide. Armed with the Godkiller sword, she will fulfill her people's destiny to restore peace.
Origin stories tend to be bottom-heavy with a lot of exposition. That goes double when dealing with mythological adventures. Once the foundation’s established, this tale becomes uniquely empowering. Diana is not of our world. When she’s introduced to it, there’s much she doesn’t understand. At first, the fish-out-of-water scenario is effectively mined for comedy. It’s nice and light. Gadot and Pine have terrific chemistry. You’re excited to see what's next. As the story progresses, the gravity of the situation comes to the forefront. This war isn’t a game. Soldiers return home missing limbs, women and children are killed indiscriminately. Bombs and poisonous gasses kill in numbers an outsider could never imagine. Even when there was combat on Themyscira, the sandy beaches were bright. The glorious choreography of the women on horseback made you go “wow”! This? It’s like the world itself is dying and all color has bled out.
Diana’s unfamiliarity with London’s politics makes her speak out. She’s outraged by generals sitting comfortably in boardrooms talking about casualties in the thousands. Her protests are a wake-up call. The moment she gets fed up and steps into the line of fire is the film’s most powerful scene. It isn’t merely that Diana stops bullets with her bracelets and faces artillery head-on, or her physical strength; it’s that she's a hero by refusing to stand idly by. I found myself filled with unexpected emotions. I marveled at the stunts and choreography. Seeing her smash through pillars and punch through windows shows you what power is because it began as something small and human: her ability to see something wrong and to say “I’m going to do something about it”. Finally, we see Wonder Woman in her full attire. It makes you go “Woah” in ways no female-led superhero or action film has before - or since.
Though the film has several villains - Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya), German general Eric Ludendorff (Danny Huston), and Ares - none are the true antagonists, which is why the film’s conclusion is never as impactful as Diana entering No Man’s Land. The real struggle is internal. It may be naive of Diana to believe that Ares' death will end the war. In a world where magic lives - even if it’s only on a remote island - isn’t it possible? You want it to be, if only so she'll be ok. She experiences the worst we have to offer but the best too. Many superhero films feature romantic sub-plots. Here, it’s crucial to every aspect of the story from the comedy to the drama, all the way to the conclusion.
Wonder Woman is a joy to discover. The film is exciting, sensitive, and romantic. The heroine is beautiful and strong. She’s also human; capable of losing her faith, falling in love, or appreciating ice cream. (On Blu-ray, December 26, 2020)

Review : IO (2019)
Tumblr media
After a couple years of consistent original content from Netflix, I’m learning that they hold it down quite well in two specific genres : science fiction and documentaries.  That’s why, after finishing up Fyre : The Greatest Party That Never Happened, I was pleasantly surprised to be recommended a new piece of original science fiction form the streaming platform in the form of IO.  Needless to say, after a quick peek at the trailer, I was on that viewing with the utmost urgency.
In the wake of the Earth’s atmosphere becoming toxic, most of human civilization has opted to flee the planet and seek the refuge of a space station located on IO, on of Jupiter’s moons.  In hopes of possibly correcting the atmosphere issue, Sam Walden (Margaret Quallery) opts to stay behind and tend to a bee colony created by her father Harry Walden (Danny Huston).  One day, a two-fold delivery of bad news takes place : a message received from Sam’s friend and estranged lover Elon (Tom Payne) states that the final transport for IO leaves in 48 hours, and a storm destroys all of the Walden research.  A glimmer of hope arrives in the form of Micah (Anthony Mackie), a mysterious man with a helium balloon in search of Harry Walden.  As the two learn about one another and face the reality of their situation, Micah decides that he is going to take Sam to the launch site for IO, whether she wants to go or not, which sets the two off on a journey filled with peril and obstacles in hopes of survival.
IO seems to rely heavily on the ideas of visual juxtapositions, the concept of pairings for survival and the quest to take control of a dire situation.  Immediately, the stark contrast between the overrun and overgrowth cities and the rural workstation that Sam has created stands out and sets the tone for the entire proceeding.  Her idea of trying to restore self-sustaining systems via revitalizing the bee population not only has connections to modern day real issues, but it shows that we are all co-dependent on one another as creatures that occupy Earth for survival, and it shows that change is possible as long as hope for it exists.  On top of all of this, it shows that the desire for humanity will not subside as long as their is breath in the lungs, and this is specifically shown via Sam’s constant desire to visit the art museum (a last vestige of the society that was).
The film is a wonderful slow burn wrapped up in the appearance of a dystopian sci-fi drama.  The ideas of philosophy, love and interconnectedness are all present within the dystopia, and the ideas thrive, even when Sam is alone.  All of these aspects are multiplied when Micah enters the picture, creating an interesting love triangle between two individuals and a voice in Sam’s head that represents the messages sent from Elon.  One of the more interesting aspects that occurs between Sam and Micah is the idea that even the supposedly last two people on Earth cannot sustain a perfect relationship, as attraction eventually joins the ranks of intentions, desires and upbringing, which are all obstacles that any relationship must overcome to survive and thrive.
The production design really stood out to me, specifically the aforementioned overgrown cities and Sam’s rural outpost (with its juxtaposition of mechanical and organic elements).  The allowance of letting the love narrative hold equal weight with the dystopian, end of the world narrative works quite well for me too.  The small cast really holds down the weight of the performances, with 95% of the work being done by Qualley and Mackie’s chemistry and connection in the midst of their differences.  The inclusion of Lena and the Swan is a perfect beat to end on, as it really opens up the idea of accepting your fate and being the master of your own destiny.
Margaret Qualley takes on her nature of being torn between her past and future while being stuck in the present, as well as taking on the fleeting hope of reconnection with Elon, like Atlas takes on the weight of the world... her actions are driven by whatever whim takes precedence, eventually resulting in her altruistic final choice.  By contrast, Anthony Mackie brings the energy of forward momentum and a clear knowledge of what he wants to the table, playing squarely opposite against Qualley while perfectly complementing her in both performance and opposite energy.  Tom Payne’s vocal performance and a brief appearance from Danny Huston round out the small but stellar cast.
I hope that Netflix continues to explore in the areas that they thrive in, especially in the world of science-fiction.  IO may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s definitely worth giving it a chance.

Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! The other one of these two samurai films (I don't know why I included both pictures in each), this one is certainly more a film... 🎞️ Chapter 29: Samurai Marathon 🎬 The other film's only tie to reality was the main character was (theoretically) "based on" a real person who was known for his undefeated record in his 61 duels. Samurai Marathon on the other hand is inspired by an actual event that happened (which was also the start of the first marathon in Japan). This Japanese-British co-production is just a much better film, no matter how you look at it. I enjoyed it, and would watch it again (as opposed to the previous, which is a one time watch novelty I think). This one had actual story, and acting, and characters and circumstances you got to know some and care about. Plus is was exciting, and shot well, and not at all as goofy as it's name might sound to us here. Additional notes, it was also directed by the director of Candyman, has an appearance by Danny Huston, and is scored by consummate weirdo Philip Glass. 🎥 #SamuraiMarathon (#SamuraiMarathonMovie) #TakeruhSatoh (#SatoTakeru) #NanaKomatsu #DannyHuston #BernardRose #PhilipGlass #SwordFighting #SwordFightingFilm #JapaneseFilm #BritishFilm #JapaneseBritishFilm #JapaneseCinema #Samurai #SamuraiFilm #WellGoUSAEntertainment #2020 #iLoveMovies #vacationstaycation #eternalbluraycatchup #blurays #movies #films #bluray #movie #film #cinema #MovieGeek #MovieNerd (at Jersey City, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeXGdxWuVCQgq6KT_bB7tzPyUOLYWMjZbBfTwU0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
