90s Music and Uranus Neptune Conjunctions
I personally don't fall under this aspect as I was born in the late 90s not early 90s but those who do are part of a pretty intriguing generation as uranus neptune conjunctions take over 100 years to repeat
There's loads of stuff on the Internet about how people with this aspect in their natal chart are into fringe philosophies and mysticism so I won't go into that but it does interest me to see which albums where released when this conjunction was taking place or in the shadow of it:
Nirvana, In Utero
Weezer, The Blue Album
Alice In Chains, Jar of Flies
Greenday, Dookie
Oasis, Definitely Maybe
Bad Religion, Stranger Than Fiction
I may have cherry picked a bit as I am into a lot of alt rock but let's analyse some of these releases in light of the planetary conjunction. There was also a lot of technological innovation that same year as musicians began to dabble with internet sales but that's a classic uranus-neptune aspect. uranus neptunw governs boundary pushing and taking things to the edge of creative consciousness, so it makes total sense that these albums were released while this conjunction was in the sky as all of them represented a change or nee beginning in terms of creativity for the artists who made them
My personal tastes aside, is it any coincidence that so many alternative rock albums were released in this year? The grunge scene dealt with depression and addiction; uranus neptune conjunctions often govern these matters and thus the energy was probably right for these lyrical and musical themes to be brought to light. Just my two cents.

My Best of 2023: My Top 5 Non-2023 Books
1. The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexandre Dumas, 1844)
2. No Country For Old Men (Cormac McCarthy, 2005)
3. Britt-Marie Was Here (Fredrik Backman, 2016)
4. In the Miso Soup (Ryū Murakami, 2003)
5. The Storyteller (Dave Grohl, 2021)
Note: These were chosen from the 10 Non-2021/Non-King books I read in 2022. (Low, I know, but once again I got caught up in new releases.) Same as previous years, Stephen King gets his own Top 5. The only Classic I managed was The Count of Monte Cristo, which was epic and took up pretty much my entire January. My first two reads for 2024 are Lonesome Dove and Don Quixote, so hopefully I'll get in the trend of reading more Classics throughout the rest of this coming year.
Thank you all so much for reading/sharing/etc. And please follow for My Top 5 Stephen King Books of 2022 & My Top 10 2022 Books, Coming Soon!!

The Devils I Know - Number 15
Welcome to “The Devils I Know!” For this spooky time of year, from now till Halloween, I’ll be counting down My Top 31 Depictions of the Devil, from movies, television, video games, and more! We’ve reached the Top 15! Today’s Devil can be summed up thusly: if rock is the Devil’s music, he’ll prove it. Number 15 is…Dave Grohl, from Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny.
Tumblr media
“Pick of Destiny” is, in my opinion, one of the best musical comedies of the past couple decades. I’m not sure how well it was revered in its own time, but he seems to have gained a significant following over the years, if nothing else, and I think it’s well-deserved. The movie was made as a cinematic vehicle for Jack Black and Kyle Gass, playing their respective characters of J.B. and K.G. (a.k.a. Jables and Kage), from their duo band Tenacious D. The story tells of two wannabe rock stars who go on a quest to find the mythical Pick of Destiny: a legendary guitar pick (no, seriously) formed from one of Satan’s own teeth. Unbeknownst to them, Satan himself is trying to find his lost tooth, also, as apparently he has plans to take over the world. However, he can’t do it till he is complete again.
Inevitably, after many colorful and bizarre encounters, the duo do, indeed, encounter the Devil, played by former Nirvana drummer and founder of Foo Fighters himself, Dave Grohl. Upon retrieving his lost fang, Satan prepares to first kill the rockin’ pair and then enact his plans for world domination…but Jables challenges the Devil to a rock-off, a challenge the arch-demon cannot decline. If the Devil wins, Kage’s soul and body will belong to him (and only Kage, because Jables threw him under the bus there). Otherwise, Satan shall be banished back to Hell…and be forced to pay the pair’s rent at their apartment, because hey, might as well make the most of that bargain, right? The rock-off with Satan – a song called “Beelzeboss” – has become one of the most popular and beloved scenes and songs from Tenacious D. It’s easy to see why: the song is, in a way, a modern, raunchy reimagining of things like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” with the fate of a soul hanging on a musical competition with pure evil. Much like that song, the Devil’s section is a grandstanding production piece, while Tenacious D.’s is more simplistic and heartfelt…ironically, however, for this same reason, the Devil actually WINS the competition, and it’s only by pure luck that Kage and Jables are able to beat him after the fact. I really love that comical twist on the formula. Grohl’s Devil is only onscreen for about five minutes, but they’re the best five minutes of the entire freaking movie. The musician is completely unrecognizable in the makeup and costume, which actually only adds to the power of his performance. Underneath it all, he plays and sings his heart out. There’s no subtlety to this Devil in any respect, but that’s really what makes this Satan a lot of fun: it’s like a cartoon character brought to life, and I say that with all the best connotations. The “Beelzeboss” number has been reprised live in concerts for Tenacious D. a few times, with different performers playing the Devil, but none have been able to match the intensity and pure fun that Grohl delivers in the movie. For many, this remains an iconic depiction of the King of Evil…and coming from a movie that ends with the two heroes turning his broken horn into a bong, that’s probably as hilarious as it is ironic. I, for one, wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tomorrow, the countdown continues with Number 14! HINT: He’s a Trans-Siberian Menace.

Night Shift
Fictional Interpretation/Short story of the Song Night Shift by Lucy Dacus.
Summary: Y/N goes through a horrific breakup with her now ex-girlfriend, Julien Baker. Instead of seeing Julien everyday at Y/N's 9 to 5, she decides to get a new job.
I felt it in my bones that this was wrong. The spit of the man I was kissing was almost drowning me. Actually, it was. I pushed my tinder date harshly off my body and coughed into the floor. My date laid on one end of the couch where I had pushed, while I keeled over, coughing on the other side. “What the fuck? Are you okay?” His gruff voice only made me cough harder. “Julien I’m sorry” I regretted the name the moment it came out of my mouth, my head slowly whipping around in hopes the man would be replaced by a more comforting figure. He wasn’t. “Okay, you’re fucking crazy. I’ve got to go.” I quickly got up. “Hey I’m sorry. Julien- I mean Jacob please come back!” The door shut in my face.
“I’m doing fine.” My hands rubbed against the soft fabric of my pants. “I’m just trying to derail my one track mind, you know how I get.” I looked up, trying to gather whether my therapist believed me. “You  know I’m regaining my self worth back in just record time.”  She let out a quick chuckle. “You’re not doing fine, Y/N. You choked when you kissed someone other than Ju-” “My ex.” “Do you see my point? You can’t even hear her name.” I was silent. “Have you spoken to Phoebe or Lucy?” I shook my head. “I almost reached out a couple of times, but it felt wrong. They belong to her. Not me.” My therapist nodded. “Have you been keeping up with what she's been up to?” I slowly nodded in sadness. “She comes back into town this weekend.” “Oh that's interesting! Will you see her?” “Oh no! Absolutely not!” She set her notebook down. “Well why not? You could gain a lot of closure by going to have coffee or something with her.” “She’s already moved on.” “Well this isn’t a get back together Y/N, It’s closure. Don’t entertain the thought.” “But I just can’t help but think of the other girl in the bed that was once mine every time I see her.” “Just try it.”
I wondered if I was a masochist. That was my only thought as I stared at the brown eyes before me. The woman I once looked at as the sun now resembled a burnt out street lamp. She wore a backwards hat and slouched, like she always fucking did. Always trying to seem small in public so people wouldn’t realize she was Julien fucking Baker. In my head, I imagined myself punching her in her teeth. Her big ‘Dave Grohl’ smile, as Lucy once put it. I was so fucking angry. How dare she move on. She moved on in the four months of silence while I had been grieving the three years of love. “You’re a fucking bitch Julien!” My arms shoved her back so hard she slipped out of the metal chair. Her mop of beige hair flew into her face. “I fucking loved you! I never meant what I said in the breakup! I always assumed you’d come back! But you fucking moved on!” I kicked the table so violently the glass cups fell and shattered on the ground. Laying next to my broken heart. The glass crunched under my boots as I walked away.
“Y/N. You okay?” My eyes blinked back into reality. “Hm?” “You went somewhere for a second.” “Oh yeah, I’m sorry about that.” “You know you never needed to apologize.” There was silence between us. The tension cut both of us off from talking. “I regret my part in the downfall of us, but you truly left me no choice, Y/N.” I felt sick. “I mean what was I supposed to do? Beg you to come back when I knew neither of us was happy? I certainly wasn’t happy.” Why did I come here? To sit and watch her stare at her fucking feet and absolve her guilt and just shake hands as if she didn't destroy me? I felt no need to forgive whatsoever. But as I looked into her eyes I figured I might as well. It would take time but I couldn’t live my life being angry at the woman I once adored. As I gazed at her I felt the urge to connect our lips. She looked at me with the same intensity she always had, eyes analyzing every part of my being. I need her lips on mine.  I just wanted to feel her one last time. No. I had to stop. I cleared my throat, shattering the moment. A crumpled up bill was in my pocket, I grabbed it and threw it on the table, paying for my part of coffee. “I gotta go Jay.” “Wait.” She grabbed my arm. “Say it again.” I turned around, confusion consuming my eyes. “Say what again?” “My name. It’s just been so long-” “I can't, I truly have to go, Julien.” My arm was ripped from hers as I quickly made my way towards the street.
The sun was making its way down behind the tall buildings, the neon lights of Memphis slowly replacing it. I walked for hours on end. The last time I had checked my phone it was when I was waiting for Julien at 5 o’clock, checking my phone through blurry eyes, I saw that it was now 12 am. I sighed and turned the corner with all intentions of returning to my new, empty apartment, but when I rounded the brick wall I saw a small bar, nestled in between a Law office and a Record store. The bar looked cozy enough so I popped in through the red door.
“Hey love, it’s four am, you have to leave.” The blond behind the bar spoke to me sweetly while trying to pull the vodka soda out of my hands. “Wait-no please. I need it.” “Here’s some water. Please sober up. You gotta leave here in the next 45 minutes.” I nodded sadly as I took the water out of her hands. I finished the water and my hands grew idle. My phone had sat neglected next to me, so I picked it up, tapping through stories. My eyes landed on what only could have been described as my worst nightmare. It was one of JUlien and I’s mutual friends' private stories. My eyes were glued to the image behind the two men posing. It was Julien, with the girl she had been seen with mere hours after I ended things. I grew angry and dialed the all too familiar number. The ringing stopped. “Hello?” The groggy voice that came through the line cut my heart.” “You know what Julien-” I was completely slurring my words. “Don’t hold your breath. I hope you forget you EVER saw me at my best. You know, you don't deserve what you don’t respect. You don’t deserve what you say you love and then you neglect.” “Avery I-” “Now bite your tongue! It’s way too dangerous to fall so young.” I took a well needed breath. “Take back what you said. You can’t lose what you never had.” I hung up just as the girl’s hand took my phone. “There will be no calling of exes.” “Whatever.” I sighed, slouching down. “Come on girl. Let's get you home.”
I got over it the best I could over the next few weeks. I eventually ended up getting a job at the bar I had solemnly stumbled into. I was serving one of my regulars when he looked at me in my eyes. It wasn’t just a glance, but a look. It was almost like he could see my entire life in this look. “What are you doing here?” I laughed. “What do you mean?” “I mean this job obviously isnt you.” “Well that’s a bold statement.” “Im serious.” He grabbed my arm. “Tell me why you’re sad.” Looking at the him, I decided to give into it. “My ex, well we met at the recording company I was working at. I fell for her instantly, but after we broke up i couldn’t stand to be there anymore. She was there 9 to 5, so I just assumed it would be best if i took the night shift, somewhere else.” “You left your job because your ex recorded there?” “If i can help it, I’ll never see her again.” A slow love song that used to be ours started playing from the speaker. He waited for my commentary, “In five years I hope that all of these songs feel like covers, almost very distant, and I’ll dedicate them to new lovers.”
The questions from my regular never stopped coming until we finally had to kick everyone out at closing. The floors were sticky with spilled alcohol, and my coworker had left me to close the bar by myself. I was mopping the floor when I heard it. The soft sound of Julien’s voice over the speaker consumed the entire building. I let the song devour me, dropping the mop and throwing my arms around myself as I swayed with the music. I was so consumedwith the sound around me I didn’t hear the soft sound of the door opening, but I did hear the steps of boots I had known so well. Instantly I whipped around and made eye contact with the person who broke me and engulfed me all at once. I took a breath. “Julien.”
Thank you for reading! This is my first work so pls be nice!!! Suggestions and critiques are welcome!!!

ten books that have stayed with you in some way — they don’t have to be greats, just the ones that have touched you.
as always anyone is welcome to do this <3
1. the silmarillion — tolkien
when the jackson trilogy came out at the movies, it was talk of the playground in the wholesome and exciting way things are when you’re a child but it wasn’t until i read silm that everything changed for me!
2. a little hatred — joe abercrombie
not my fave abercrombie but the impact it made on me was so welcomed after my asoiaf burnout. in it for the long haul with joe abercrombie, looking forward to the devils (sound of the summer)!
3. macbeth — shakespeare
fave shakespeare which i own several copies of. i worked on lighting for a production back in 2014-15 and my copies are heavily annotated with production notes & codes
4. just kids — patti smith
beautiful and heartbreaking. there’s a longer story to it but patti signed a copy for me when i met her and it is deeply treasured <3
5. emma — jane austen
my favourite austen <3
6. the storyteller — dave grohl
i have an enduring lifelong love for him, he is undeniably charming — witty, silly, and filled with warmth. the audiobook version is the best.
7. le lai de lanval — marie de france
technically not a full book, but i think about this short arthurian tale and the mystery of marie de france quite a lot!
8. the subtle knife — phillip pullman
absolutely my fave from the HDM trilogy which also influenced a lot of my interest in sci-fi/fantasy. cried for hours when i finished reading it as a child.
9. ariel — sylvia plath
a collection of her poetry that is quite confronting when you realise how young she was, and how you're approaching that age. reflectins on motherhood, feminism, depression and marriage right up until she died.
10. the fourteenth year of chenghua — meng xishi
detective case fiction and political intrigue for history buffs. i hear meng xishi is quite popular now but i've never read any of her english translations. her chinese prose is so utterly beautiful and her writing is so rich with historical and cultural notes i worry they won't translate across. romance takes a back seat in this one. it's clear she's a history nerd; writes extensively about it in her notes, how it influences her, her interpretations etc. i am aware i am bravely attempting to pitch

remember kids: if someone says they “support all women, especially the unborn”, they are probably so flagrant with antisemitism and racism, and a r a p e apologist to boot that they probably don’t even realize it and we probably should start writing feminism’s obituary while we’re at it. they’re probably blatantly misandrist, too.
“men only support abortion because it proves that they’re deadbeat dads”. so, you believe that men force abortions on women, which is not only a completely alien concept to me because in my experience it’s the other way around (growing up around christians who thought that abortion was morally wrong; if a woman got pregnant, that was it, she has to carry it out and raise the child once it’s born no matter what the circumstances; i.e., i’ve always seen the pro-life side as far more controlling, so the whole “men forcing abortions on women” is science fiction to me), but also tells me that rather than being smart with your choices from who you choose to sleep with to what you do the day after to being responsible over your own fucking body, you instead blame the men and wish to make everybody else suffer because of your own hang-up against the male gender? you bitch.
you know how feminists had the reputation of being man-haters for decades and it wasn’t until about ten years ago when we started seeing a pushback against it, but it’s now rather pointless and back to square one now that i write this out and see how men are often trashed while women are built up? this is why.
“i survived a botched abortion”. i think this was the sentiment that made me realize that she was absolutely full of it and it really made me question her legitimacy, too. her mother had an illegal abortion when she was pregnant with her, either out of shame or guilt or fear or what have you, but kristin never expanded on it, though… at least that’s what i think the story is. again, she never expanded on it. when you ask her about it, she gives this convoluted statement that is really hard to follow unless you know both sides of the argument down to a t; nobody like me who admittedly only had a basic understanding of this until pretty recently (i just never saw the point of this argument: if someone wants an abortion, that should be okay, why is this a problem?) was going to get out from under it. total sensationalism on her end, and she doesn’t seem to realize this, either.
the whole “support all women” thing will never not make me laugh, either, because she’s one of those “everything after the year 2000 sucks” people (read: classic rock supremacy, that is officially a joke now), without really realizing that her precious classic rock and grunge were considered pop music at their time. plus, what genres of music have more women (or people of color for that matter) in them than pop? maybe jazz or the blues or country or hip hop. rock n roll, as much as i love it, is predominantly white and male: what women there are should be cherished. i’ll admit, i used to be like that, too, but then i started exploring more popular stuff just out of curiosity and then i realized this whole supremacy thing, “rockism” as it’s known, is complete nonsense. most rock n roll guys are into popular stuff, too (like alex’s love of hip hop, or a guy like eric being into ariana grande of all people, or dave grohl liking taylor swift), and most pop musicians and rappers ironically tend to be into rock n roll, so it comes off as totally pretentious.
in fact, i think that’s a word i used on her some time ago, “pretentious.” assuming that i know what you’re talking about and just blindly buying into it, but i have this nagging feeling that something about this just isn’t right. it feels “off”. there’s something about all of this that doesn’t sit well with me, and i feel helpless to say something because i don’t feel smart enough.
and then… the jews. i forget where or when i saw it, but all i know is when roe was overturned, i started seeing things how it violates jewish law. yes, separate church from state, but you should also respect other people’s religion and their right to practice it. she advocates something that infringes upon the right of jewish women to do as they please. plus, i started thinking, “you know i’ve never seen her say ‘happy Hanukkah’ or l’shanah tova or anything like that. i have never seen a single jewish person on her profile. i have never seen her with a black person before (i caught her using ebonics—that’s just one time, too, it makes me morbidly curious as to how many other times it’s happened).” the whole “support all women” thing becomes not only hollow but incredibly confusing, especially for someone like me, your basic bitch pro-choice advocate. (it becomes even more confusing once you realize that she actually wants courtney love, A WOMAN, dead. i wish i was making that up.)
the other night, before all of this happened, she was going on about the election how we’re having to choose predator #1 or predator #2, and how someone in their early twenties was groomed by one of them… something like that, i don’t remember the whole thing and i frankly don’t care, either. first off, you’re a legal adult when you’re in your early twenties (and i was literally laughing when i wrote that, too). second, in a perfect world, we’d have candidates who are actually good and clean people. but that’s not the world we live in, though: they’re all garbage, they’re all horrible people (it’s why i vote independent). but would you rather have the ones who have us in mind or the ones who pull dumb shit like banning drag shows? third, it’s so rich coming out of her because she is a r a p e apologist, there’s no way around that. she’s posted stories from people who “regret their abortions” and you actually read the whole thing and find the person was 11 years old when they had it done, failing to realize that that was a literal child. 11 year olds go outside and play, they watch cartoons and play with dolls; they shouldn’t have to worry about becoming pregnant and going through the traumatic experience of it and having their lives threatened all the while, and going in for a single scraping will save them. which tells me she’s okay with literal children having children of their own. in fact, because of that, i started wondering if she’s a closet p e d o for that reason. saying that r a p e is not okay but also saying that literal young girls should not have a procedure that can genuinely save their life because “it could kill the young girl inside”… yeah, that does not sit well with me.
like i said, it… gets so fucking disturbing once you read between the lines and start putting the pieces together. she tries to soften the blow by saying shit like “but life is complex!” yeah, don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining, kristin. you live in a fantasy world. you live in a fantasy world and you complain about shit that either isn’t an issue, is an issue but your approach is utterly baffling, or you phrase it in such a way that the implications surrounding you are abhorrent and i can’t help but wonder if you’re harboring some dark secrets and you come across as an absolute bitch in the process. what’s worse is she doesn’t realize it. i mean, the fact she’s never apologized or shown any nugget of humility is telling to me. she’ll also say bullshit like “yeah, i know” in the snottiest way possible. well, if you know, then why aren’t you doing anything, miss 3 feminist 5 u? you know, i’m so sick of this “armchair activism” as it’s known: after seeing too many people being shot in the last several years, i’ve started to take strongly worded tweets and blog posts as nothing more than airy noise that does fuck-all to get a point across. in the election post from the other night, i pointed out how 2023 isn’t even halfway done yet and yet here she is out here rambling about it in the vein of those fuckign ron desantis commercials I’ve been seeing lately. 2016 was awful: i remember that election cycle, it was hyped to the moon. and it literally began in 2015. which tells me this next one is going to be even worse.
here’s something interesting: when i was 10th grade, believe it or not, i picked up this trait about dictatorships of all things, in that the further they go onto a certain wing of the political spectrum, they end looping around to the other side. you get so conservative and strict in your rules and laws, that you wind up making sweeping changes and destroying everything in the process. conversely, you get so liberal in everything that you wind up being incredibly strict and hateful and everything around you goes sideways. i realize it’s not just politics, either: you see it at the granular level. i.e., someone this staunch in her positions cannot have her head screwed on right.
this woman is far too liberal for her own good. she’s so feminist that she winds up being a literal misandrist. her brand is feminism is pure white, to the point i couldn’t tell you if she has any minorities on her page (oh, she’s also a bully to christians, many of whom didn’t even come up to her and tell her she’s going to hell for being a flaming atheist, they’re usually just regular people). she’s so pro-science and yet she ignores all the science surrounding female biology. she’s also one of those royally annoying vegans who tries to convince you that it’s the gospel, but… I’m not even touching that one. she claims to be pro-lgbtq+, saying that lgbtq+ rights “start at conception”—another disturbing implication that you know your sexuality when you’re a bundle of cells the size of a dime—but i’m literally pansexual (and a crossdresser!) and she has patronized me far more than supported me. if you speak out against her, she humiliates you and rallies people up so they can verbally attack you, while she plays up this victim complex in that she’s this delicate girl, a fragile helpless little flower, even though she’s a year older than me and i would touch billie eilish before i touched her, and i wouldn’t touch billie with a 10-feet pole covered in grease.
i’ve said it to her before, it’s going to look even weirder the more time goes on; it already looks really bad just from her frivolousness, her ego, and the fact that she does not ask questions about her own beliefs: i have, many times, and i’m still questioning. i can only hope that she wakes up one day and realizes just how much she advocates is actually either unethical or illegal, and just how shitty of a person she’s been on top of it.

The Black Phone (2022) Review
Tumblr media
Wow, kids in the 70s really liked bullying each other, didn’t they? Just the common high school hobby - lets punch each other to our heart’s desire! What a time to have been a child!
Plot: After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims.
This year has been pretty good for horror films thus far. Got to see Sebastian Stan being a charming cannibal in Fresh; a bunch of youths filmed a porno whilst being massacred one by one by their old horny landlords in X; and the Foo Fighters got killed off by a possessed band leader Dave Grohl who wanted to go solo in Studio 666 - so all in all, not too shabby to bring out the scares of 2022. Next we now have The Black Phone, where Ethan Hawke gets to play your not so usual evil clown (he describes himself as a part-time magician) who wears a half-clown-half-devil mask, drives a black van and has a bunch of black balloons as a prop in abducting little boys. Oh yeah, this guy is a pervert through and through, and Hawke is aptly creepy and scary, however be warned, this movie is not the Ethan Hawke show, as he’s actually not in the movie that much. Only for 3 or 4 scenes really. It’s actually about a brother and a sister, a modern Hansel and Gretel if you will (though any fictional brother/sister name examples would fit) and them dealing with their abusive father who has a drinking problem, and gosh I must tell you, if anyone here has had abusive parents, I feel for you as the abusive dad in this is horrible and manipulative. So as a result what we have is a movie that is not necessarily that scary, but more so just offers a situation that in itself is horrifying.
Speaking of which, the child actors in this are phenomenal. They get the most screen time, and they could have really ruined the film with bad deliveries or general annoyances that can come with the demand of an R-rated, adult-themed movie, and in the 1970s no less. They really had to understand their element, and the main brother and sister had to show us their chemistry not just when together but also when apart. They had a lot to work with, and lived up to their roles. This was of course complemented by Hawke's villain role, portrayed very obscurely yet charismatically. You're not ever really knowing what he's thinking, what he'll do next, or why/when he'll decide to wear different masks or illicit a new kind of conversation. They could have gone deeper into it narratively however, as it is never really explained why Hawke’s character wore masks, and at one point in the film when his mask is torn off he freaks out and becomes a wimp, again begging the question why his character felt so naked without the masks. Felt like there was an expositional scene that was cut out from the final cut, which does leave one wanting more. Especially due to Hawke’s limited screen time, you do wish there was more backstory provided for him.
The Black Phone feels like a movie that was made in the 70′s. Scott Derrickson in faded tones to give it the feel of that era, and throws in cuts of old school stock footage to amplify that. Additionally the first act of this film is very slow paced, and takes its time introducing us to the child characters and their lifestyle, which very much reminded me of the coming-of-age style of Richard Linklater movies. Also, all the kids in this movie bully the heck out of one another at school. Like there’s so much punching. Like my gosh the 70s was rough. I blame it on ‘Nam. I don’t know, for some reason seeing kids bully each other makes me think of the 70′s. Cause evidently bullying is so specific to the 70′s...
Overall The Black Phone is a very enjoyable if not quite dark thriller. I wouldn’t really call it a horror, as the scares mainly come from jump scare reveals of ghosts who look like zombies, but even then I wouldn’t call them scary. However seeing a very game Hawke and very talented lead child actors, this very much provided a exciting if not a tad forgettable visit to the movies.
Overall score: 6/10

Album Review: Mudhoney “Plastic Eternity”
Seattle’s Mudhoney are now like elder statesmen of alt-rock! The band formed in 1988 and their sound was highly influential on what came to be known as Grunge. The band’s song “Touch Me I’m Sick” was referenced in Cameron Crowe’s Seattle-set film Singles, with the fictional band Citizen Dick’s song “Touch Me I’m Dick”. The band members intersect with several other WA bands of that era: Singer/guitarist Mark Arm and guitarist Steve Turner had previously been in Green River (read my album review of their 2019 reissue here) with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, later of Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam. Longtime drummer Dan Peters was briefly in Nirvana in 1990. The band’s contribution to Singles “Overblown” was a crazy surf rock punk stomper of their response to Seattle’s popularity. Unlike many of Mudhoney’s peers, the band never had a big huge hit on radio or MTV, but they got serious respect from musicians and from critics. I never got heavy into Mudhoney, but I always dug their stuff. The fact that they are named after Russ Meyer’s 1965 cult film Mudhoney got my attention. The band’s song “Acetone” is one of my favorites of the 90s after it was featured in the 1996 college comedy Glory Daze. The band had some pop culture moments like when they appeared in the Chris Farley / David Spade movie Black Sheep! After some time on a major label in the 90s, they returned to Sub Pop and are still on the label today. In Oct. 2019, I saw them in concert at Brighton Music Hall and they rocked (read my review here). This week Sub Pop is releasing the band’s eleventh studio album Plastic Eternity.

Much of this album is about trying to make sense of a world gone crazy. It’s not just the Pandemic, even though the band had some time to prep these songs during lockdown. It’s Mark Arm’s sharp and funny lyrics about the craziness he’s observing. Case in point, “Cry Me an Atmospheric River” about climate change and asking what it would be like if the climate could play like Hendrix.

I can’t say this album blew me away in the way that, say, Pearl Jam’s Gigaton truly felt like their best album in over 1.5 decades. But it is a fun album. The more you listen, the more the album gets better. Dan Peters is someone I’ve always had deep respect for, going back to his brief time in Nirvana in 1990 just before Dave Grohl joined. “Sliver” is definitely one of the 25 Best Nirvana Songs Ever and his playing in Mudhoney has always been an anchoring point. While there might not be a “Touch Me I’m Sick” or “Suck You Dry” level of a banger here, there are some fun tracks.

The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl
“I stopped trying to understand fate and destiny a long time ago, but dumb luck seems to be my specialty.”
I am a huge Foo Fighters fan. And Dave Grohl is very high on my list of all-time favorite drummers (and front-men). So, naturally, I was pretty damn excited when this book was first announced. Then it was released, and because I generally just do not read non-fiction, it slipped through the cracks. Fast-forward to this month, when Spotify announced the availability of audiobooks for premium members. I'm not normally a fan of audiobooks, as I'd much rather read my books than listen to them (my brain just processes/devours them better that way). But, seeing as this one was read by the man, himself, I figured... why not?
This was easily the best way for me to experience this book. Grohl has an extremely excitable - and likable - personality that makes these stories just fly by, and saves the book from his often awkward prose. And hearing him actually tell these stories, instead of just reading his words, brings an emotionally touching sense of reflection to them. It also keeps all of the name-dropping from ever feeling like (just) bragging. Instead, it makes them feel like the world's luckiest fan sharing the unlikely situations - and unbelievable encounters - that led to him becoming one of the biggest rock stars in the world.
My biggest complaints would be that there are some periods from which I would've liked to get more stories, his prose can often be awkward - but is (mostly) saved by the audiobook - and the stories are seemingly organized randomly in terms of chronology, making it difficult to keep track of where we are on the Dave Grohl timeline.
This isn't really a book about Grohl's craft, nor is it a comprehensive account of his life as a musician. It's just a storyteller telling stories. Knowing this, I was able to kick back and enjoy these tales for what they are. Dave Grohl may be one of the biggest rock stars in the world, but he's also a fan, and it's so fun listening to him geek out about meeting his personal heroes on his journey to becoming one of ours.
7.5/10

Note: I'm including a few favorites from when I got to make photos of Foo Fighters back in 2015 at Fenway Park.

Mid-Year Reading Update
Thanks @leer-reading-lire for tagging me! 🥰
Amount of books you've read so far: 27
Best book you've read so far in 2022: The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker and The Storyteller by Dave Grohl.
Best sequel you've read so far in 2022: I haven't read any sequels this year. I'm more into standalones now, unless is a good thriller/detective series.
New release you haven't read yet but want to: Elektra by Jennifer Saint.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
Biggest surprised favorite new author (debit or new to you): Ashley Winstead. I really liked In My Dreams I Hold a Knife and I'm planning on reading her latest book soon.
Newest fictional crush: probably Coop from In My Dreams I Hold a Knife.
Book that made you cry: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.
Book that made you happy: The Storyteller by Dave Grohl, again. It's just a great book.
Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received): probably my hardback copy of The Women of Troy by Pat Barker.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?: I wanna get to my annual reread of Dracula, reread Persuasion before the new movie comes out, read some Tennessee Williams, and just try and get to read at least 10 of the books in my tbr.
I'm tagging @thestateofspirit @totallyshelfaware @pxdfoott @scienceandpuzzles and anyone else who wants to do it 🤗

Why will you not discuss your writing in more detail here? Or link to your stories? There’s readers here who like your stuff - we do like you. Be nice if your stuff was here.
are you updating learning to walk next? Also why that title? Lots of asks for you! 🫶🏻
This is all so loaded - you know how I asked if y’all want to see Joel in Maria’s little jail cell (which apparently you do!)? I guess you want me there too! 😉
About a year ago - and let’s face it, this has been going on since the inception of the TLOU game - many if not most of the writers, readers and fans of this forbidden ship were forced underground. Readers on social media have very strong opinions about this ship, and I’m no stranger to forbidden ships, I’ve been writing fan fiction since the late 90s.
The difference between then and now is that there seems to be a very aggressive culture of readers that cannot separate fiction from real life; that what a writer is putting out in the universe is indicative of what type of person they are in real life. In the 90s and early 2000s when I was writing as a young adult, most people just shrugged and ignored writers they didn’t like - they didn’t have a platform to express their distaste.
Now, with multiple platforms of social media where literally every person across every generation and every walk of life has an opinion that they’re not afraid to express, we’ve entered into an era of not only tearing down fiction writers, but there are people out there hellbent on exposing writers who write under pseudonyms - some to protect their identity for work purposes, others to protect their families and themselves. That is a dangerous situation that writers and artists can find themselves in.
This is all to say that if you are familiar with my work, you know where it is. If you’re not familiar with my work, you can ask and I can point you in the right direction - over to ao3 where taboo subject matter is more widely accepted. Writers have their share of harassment there, too, but it’s far less and readers are less likely to attack writers and try to dox them because of ao3 policy of tolerance.
If you’ve made it this far into this diatribe, congratulations. 🥳 Learning to Walk, chapter 6 is next on my list - the story will cross 50k words and the sugar and spice is coming. Where did the title come from? The Foo Fighters’ song “Walk” - lead singer Dave Grohl said that the song was partly inspired by his life after losing his best friend, Kurt Cobain. Joel has seen too much in his life , and Ellie hasn’t seen enough, they’re learning to live and learning to walk together despite the world that stands against them - between them.
Okay little cubs, that’s it from Mama Bear today 🫶🏻 thanks for sticking around!

using this platform as an excuse to talk about books — so here’s what i read 2023 and what i recommend:
[ the storyteller: tales of life and music - dave grohl ] i am a huge foo fighters fan and grew up with my mom loving dave grohl, the stories he tells in this book are not chronological; but they are beautiful. it makes me admire this man more than i did, he’s truly inspiring. 4.5/5 stars, -0.5 because i could not retain as well when it would jump from year to year.
[ suicide notes - michael thomas ford ] i did not enjoy this book for as much as it was overhyped. i understood the plot, i understood the story, it was gripping but not generally moving. a common coming-of-age young romance with mental illness; not bad yet not the best. 2/5 stars, -3 because i did not like how slow and basic the storyline was, though i liked few of the characters
[ daisy jones & the six - taylor jenkins reid ] OH IM A TAYLOR JENKINS REID GIRLIE NOW. i had previously heard of evelyn hugo but at the time djats series had just came out, and i was curious to read the book. i watched the pilot and was sold, you’d think a hippie gal who loves rock bands would pass this up ?? TJR’s book style is so easy for me to get into too, i could NOT put the book down. greta writing and great storyline, forever a camila kinner and truther. -4.5/5 stars, -0.5 bc i HATED billy dunne and book eddie loving.
[ 11/22/63 - stephen king ] i read this for extra credit in my language arts class and when i tell you i’ve been DYING to read this book since i saw my mom read it. my roman empire is the JFK presidency and assassination, and i’ve always enjoyed stephen king… so this was just a chefs kiss. although, mr stephen king holds onto scenes a little too long and it could’ve been a 600 page book, not 800. so sometimes i caught myself snoozing, but i loved the concept loved the book. time traveling + historical + thriller + romance = 4/5 starred book, -1 only because it was longer than it should’ve been
[ water for elephants - sara gruen ] this book is one of those “it gets good at the end” books. i put this book down twice and it took me majority of the year to get into it. i did not enjoy the beginning, but over time and chapters it became better. true story on a circus with what i’m guessing are fictional main characters. either way it was good, good paced, and interesting. definitely makes you look at circuses or any animal show differently. 3/5 stars, -2 just cause the beginning was slow
[ intensity - dean koontz ] …. now wtf. i read this bc my mom recommended it… don’t read it. it’s good it’s crazy it blows your mind, but it is so so fucked up. it’s a murder story and it’s just gross and weird. intensity is the right title, it was very intense. i was holding my breath on so many scenes, yet it was somehow enjoyable just because of how much of a thriller it was. 3/5, -2 only cause i would never read it again, and it was gross.
[ red, white, & royal blue - casey mcquiston ] i noticed this was a movie so i thought why not watch it, i don’t tend to watch stuff before i read it, but i wanted a judgement on this book. i loved the movie just bc it was so cutesy and the characters were so in love. and i got that right in the book. definitely your typical cheesy teenage romance book with light smut, and very gay. so as much as people critique it, i enjoyed it and it was what i needed to read or have in that moment. just a sappy and cutesy love story. 4/5 stars, -1 because i wasn’t left as content as i thought i’d be
[ the seven husbands of evelyn hugo - taylor jenkins reid ] taylor jenkins reid the woman that you are. i understood the hype, i loved the book, it was written so well. there’s twists and just emotion and i loved it. i tabbed the book and everything. i just loved it, it’s truly a gripping and great story. fuck men, except for one he was a sweetheart. plus it’s around marilyn monroe/rita hayworth actress era and i eat that shit up. 5/5 stars, she’s just that girl.
[ the book thief - markus zusak ] :( i love this book but oh is it sad. i reread it for a school unit. liesel meminger you’re a remarkable girl. 4/5 stars, point off bc we had to do assignments on it and i hated one section of the book.
[ the complete persepolis - marjane satrapi ] during the iran revolutions and conflicts with the shah and stuff. it was okay, not my favorite but not bad. also a graphic novel!! autobiography also, pretty neat. 3/5 stars, not my cup of tea and we had to do stupid assignments on them that made us think too hard abt it
