Animorphs #20-22 by @kaaauthor

This is a remake of a book I made almost exactly two years ago. That was the 11th book I ever made and this one is the 50th (!) I asked K.A. Applegate to sign the book while it was still in sheets, so I only had one chance to get it right.

🐅 Animorphs 20-22 was the first serialized arc in the 90s book series.

🐅 The heroes recruit a new kid to their guerilla team and grant him morphing powers, only for his selfish and sociopathic tendencies to jeopardize their fight against the alien invasion.

🐅 Young readers were challenged by this subversion of the "new kid" trope and the moral dilemma that developed. Do they kill a fellow teammate? How else can they neutralize him?

🐅 ALSO: Can these middle schoolers crash the G7 Summit and save Boris Yeltsin, Bill Clinton, and other heads of state from infestation?

You just don't get him like I do.

Wymack pulled a bottle of vodka out of the bag and put it down beside Kevin. “You have ten seconds to inhale as much of this as you can. I’m timing you. Go.” It was alarming how much a man could drink when he needed an emotional crutch. Wymack had to pry the bottle from Kevin’s desperate fingers afterward.

Kevin was silent for an endless minute, then said, “You should be  Court.” It was barely a whisper, but it cut Neil to the bone. It was a resentful goodbye to the bright future Kevin had wanted for Neil. Kevin recruited Neil because he believed in  Neil’s potential. He brought him to the Foxes intending to make a star athlete out of him. Despite his condescending attitude and his dismissals of Neil’s best efforts Kevin honestly expected Neil to make the national team after graduation.

“Good thing you’re not there anymore.” “Jean still is.”

“Let Riko be King,” Kevin said, with the exaggerated enunciation of the thoroughly sloshed. “Most coveted, most protected. He’ll sacrifice every piece he has to protect his throne. Whatever. Me?” Kevin gestured again, meaning to indicate himself but too drunk to get his hand higher than his waist. “I’m going to be the deadliest piece on the board.”

Before he stepped on Kevin tapped the butt of his racquet against the floor and passed his stick to his other hand. He stroked to half-court head high and left-handed and the crowd went wild.

Currently thinking very hard about how Neil was so cautious around Wymack in the first book. Like, if Wymack even got annoyed about something Neil very quickly made sure to put enough space between himself and Wymack to make sure he didn’t get hurt.

The fact that Wymack himself had to reassure Neil that he would never hurt him.

And then at the end of the second book, Wymack picks Neil up from the airport without any hesitation and is there for Neil when he’s panicking and helps to patch him up after everything that happened. Like, Wymack is so focused on making sure Neil is okay that nothing else matters in that moment.

David Wymack is THE dad ever and no one can change my mind about that.

we know abby has seen some really terrible injuries during her time with the foxes/aftermath of spending time with the ravens so she saw jean and was somewhat prepared, but i can imagine the nurses/doctors/trainers for the trojans being absolutely appalled, driven to drink levels of disturbed by seeing jean’s medical records/x-rays/scars. like i can just imagine the coaches and team staff getting together to compare notes on jean and realizing how far into the deep end they were thrown (they’re all cursing kevin day and wymack, and jeremy a little)

KEVIN AND WYMACK!

Whatever you do don't think about Kevin meeting Wymack for the first time and having to pretend that he's just another coach and not the man that may just give him enough strength to keep going.

Don't think about Kevin finding himself in front of his father years later, a broken hand and a desperate expression on his face, so many things to say but only being able to let out a quiet "please help me" before crashing in his arms.

Don't think about Kevin looking at how Wymack treats his foxes and knowing that he would have been just fine if he had just been with his father.

Whatever you do don't think about Wymack starting to hate Kayleigh a bit more every time he hears about something that happened in the nest.

Don't think about Wymack watching Kevin drink himself to oblivion just because he wants to let go for a while, watching him scream at people during practice or scowling when he's disappointed and think "yeah, that's my son alright".

Whatever you do don't think about Kevin and Wymack being father and son without knowing how to actually be them.

Don't think about them standing awkwardly one next to the other but prefer that than being separated again.

Don't think about Kevin finally telling his father the truth and feeling like he has finally lost the only person that actually believed in him because why isn't he saying something??? Why is his father just standing there, not even looking at him??

Don't think about Wymack hearing the truth for the first time and feeling his whole world collapse. She lied to him. Kevin is his son. His son. He had abandoned his son. He should have pushed harder, he should have known that she wouldn't cheat on him, he should have been there, he should have saved him.

Don't think about Kevin and Wymack being ghosts around each other and not knowing how to be anything else.

BUT

If you do want to think about them then think about Abby making dinner plans for the three of them, just so they can all get to know each other in a different light.

Think about them going camping together because Matt said that it's something he used to do with his father.

Think about Kevin, waking up from another nightmare, one that seemed more like a memory than something made up by his mind, and asking Wymack if he can stay with him for a couple of nights, just until he feels better.

Think about Wymack waking up in the middle of the night because of a screaming Kevin and saying "Come here, son", embracing him in his arms until he calms down.

Think about Wymack teaching Kevin how to fish, how to make a proper steak, how to ride a motorcycle, because he wants to experience every first that the universe has left him.

Think about Wymack taking care of a sick Kevin and hearing him call him 'Dad' for the first time.

Think about "and my father comes to all of my games. That is enough."

Because sure, being father and son is not easy, especially after spending so much time apart, but they make an effort. Abby helps, Bee helps, the foxes help, even Jean unintentionally helps. It's not easy but they try, that is enough.
