Crazy how you can pinpoint the second Rex Glass becomes Peter Nuyerev in the very first episode of the penumbra. Because he starts out as sweet and sickly as he is with Nova Zolatovna- “is there room in that window for two?”, all the purring and the flirting and the running his tongue over his canines-ing.

But you can see - right when Juno tells “Rex” to punch him again - the walls start to fall a bit. He’s just a little too concerned, a little too hesitant, unwilling to keep up the grandeur in the face of this private investigator who Peter suspects is too masochistic for his own good. They crumble when Juno tells the truth about his brother, I think because Peter doesn’t know how to react with true, hard-won honesty without returning it in kind.

And the walls creep back up later, sure - we know he’s ready to go long before Juno snaps the cuffs on his wrists. But I think it’s important that we did get to see the real Peter Nureyev in the first episode. Juno did too. I truly believe that that’s the reason he doesn’t really give up on Nureyev in season 1. Because he might not believe that he knows who Peter Nureyev really is, but deep down in his bones, he does.

another jupeter piece and some recommended songs from my jupeter playlist!

I have synesthesia which means my brain associates certain audio and music with different colors and shapes, so I worked a lot with the colors on this piece and especially the background to kind of translate some of the visualizations I get when I listen to these songs together! If you read the lyrics of both you’ll see why I heavily associate them with juno and peter!

I have another piece that I’ll hopefully post circa S3 that goes along with There’s No Secrets This Year (the most jupeter song ever) and a comic for Waltz in E-Major, Op. 15 “Moon Waltz” by Cojum Dip that I really want to work on soon! I organized it partially by season so hopefully it’s easier to understand the character connections of the songs. Thank you so much for the support while I’ve been on hiatus! I’m so hit or miss on Lee Bermejo’s art. I was flipping through Dear Detective #1 today and like, he has an incredible command of texture, of things like leather and skin. But sometimes he does too much and it’s just grotesque. 

I remember seeing a Suicide Squad cover I think? Possibly a variant? Of Harley and it was straight up gross to look at. I think making grotesque hyperrealistic art of these characters could be an angle -- maybe that IS it is? -- but I feel like being grotesque probably isn’t his intention, because like, Riddler looks fine. There’s a page of Two-Face in there that looks incredible. Bruce/Bats always looks great.

I sort of wonder if maybe he just can’t draw women. There’s a Catwoman in there where I tried to picture how her face would look without the cowl on and it was just.....like...something was really off with the eyes? I can’t even explain it. Ivy looks rough, Harley looks rough more often than not. 

Maybe it’s just me though; I feel like he must be popular enough, if he’s getting essentially a mini artbook issue.

I always say that I like L's death in the manga more, but I've never explained why. It's because it's quiet. You don't realise L's dying until he's actually dying. You see L stop talking mid-sentence, but it's not a weird behaviour coming for him. We see the ellipsis constantly, because he's thinking. You then see Mogi and Soichiro's confused faces, Soichiro asking what's wrong and in the bottom left L's hand trembling, but we already saw him shiver. It was when Ukita died and after Aizawa grabbed him. Or when Misa mentioned the Shinigami in the tapes. So, maybe he's shaking because he's scared or deeply affected by what's going on: Watari just died, the Shinigami disappeared, the Kira Case is getting to a critical point. It's normal to think that he's just trying to calm himself down. But then... He just falls to the side, while letting go of the spoon he was holding. You can't really say that’s usual for him. He fell off the chair once, but it was off screen. Now, even if it's a drawing, you can feel that he's going in slow motion, which means something is very wrong. Obviously, when you read, you can immediately see that bigger picture in which he falls and have a reaction, but going panel by panel, it's just so quiet. He's not going out in a big style or making a lot of noise. And this silent death symbolises to me how L – himself, not the detective – was during his time alive. So unimportant to anyone but Watari, that could've had an immediate reaction in case he had died in front of him. Just like those present had a reaction in that moment. But what if he died and no one was around him? He would've just perished. Alone. Nobody would've known. The world would've not realised that he is gone. And it didn't anyway. All the people he worked with. All the connections he made. None of them knows that L died. When I picture his death in my mind, I can’t help but imagine him being alone, because that's how I think he felt in that moment. He wasn’t actually very close to the task force. They were just people he worked with. Even if he felt some affection towards them, I don’t believe he thought they could feel the same. And they showed that they moved on pretty quickly. When I think about that moment, instead, I see him being on a stage, illuminated by the light, while all around him is dark, and you'd think that at least someone is watching in silence that heartbreaking moment. But once he falls, dies and the light turns off, you'd realise that there is actually nobody to react. No one actually cared about him without the detective persona attached.

I know, I haven’t used this tumblr in forever, but I fell headfirst into an old obsession again and decided to rewatch the Detective Conan anime from scratch. It feels right for a nostalgic experience like this to put it on here.
