I haven't posted art in a long long time and this is all I have so have terrible screenshots of a sopping wet Sun and his loving boyfriend Basil Nick Arsenic

I'll preface this by saying I haven't read the arc where Bruce shoots and kills Darkseid; I'm fuzzy on the details. the sources I've looked up here and there whenever the topic came to my mind seemed contradictory; I get the impression there was collaboration from some other heroes and it might've not been that clear cut? either way, I'm not going to read the arc rn (might in the distant future, if I choose to do something with it), but it seems there's agreement that this was the one time Bruce canonically planned to and followed through breaking his most sacred rule.

and I remember at one point I thought: what if this plot was used to give Bruce a better understanding of Jason's choices? what if it could make him not just willing to find a middle ground between them, but intentionally seek it? it wouldn't, couldn't be blanket acceptance, but if there's one point in canon that will even nudge him way from his increasingly uncompromising stance during the post-crisis/new earth continuity (1), it would be the one time he found his line in the sand, and realised that, unlike he always feared, he could walk back from it.

at the time it was no more than a passing thought, but just today, to close that chapter with the year, I read the very last few comics including new earth!Jason, in my completitionist quest of reading every single one of his (and every other version of Jason's) appearances. and two (technically three) of them reminded me of this.

one is his arc in convergence: batman and robin #1-2, published circa 2015 (revisiting new earth after 2011's reboot). it's part of a larger event that I can't be bothered to read fully rn (this ain't about them), but the gist of it is that Red Hood and Scarlet return to Gotham as some apocalyptic level shit is going down, helping Batman and Robin (Damian). Bruce accepts Jason's help, which bothers Damian, although by the end of the arc there's a truce between them and a clear willingness from everyone involved to work together going forward.

the other one is in batman incorporated vol. 1 #6, the last proper appearance of new earth!Jason before the reboot in 2011 kickstarted (the arc seemingly continued in vol. 2, but from what I already know about, and what little I've personally experienced from, the new 52, I'm not getting my hopes up). it consists on just a couple of panels where we don't see Jason's face or hear his name, and just see Bruce recruiting someone as "Wingman" (2), offering him a opportunity to "salvage a reputation" by joining his international bat-initiative, on a few conditions like keeping Jason's identity a mystery (3).

and I'm sure that if (when?) I read the aforementioned Darkseid's arc (and the subsequent time traveling shenanigans) there might be plenty to be found to contradict this post, because I do have some experience with detective comics comics. but these two instances are so easily aligned with my own take (4) that I had to post about it.

unfortunately, this is just making me mourn what-could-have-been, had the reboot never occured, even more than I ever did.

(1) pre-crisis/earth one!Bruce had a different attitude. and sometimes it feels that things like self-defence (batman vol. 1 #400) or defence of others (detective comics vol. 1 #411), two incredibly understandable motives, seem beyond the grasp of new earth!Bruce.

(2) if I ever do something with this plotbunny, I refuse to give him such a generic codename, just so we're clear.

(3) "we're building a ghost –a bogeyman too big to be clearly seen. its edges indistinct, it's full extent and purpose uncertain. a rumor. a terror made of shadows and flapping wings." MOURNING, I said 😭. also do you see why I think this deserved a much cooler name smh.

(4) the other things Jason did in between Bruce's not-so-dead experiences and this were during his Evol Era (battle for the cowl, batman and robin vol. 1). obviously nothing there would convince Bruce to suddenly approach him with more generosity than he did even in UTRH lol. but it'd make sense for it to be something Bruce did.

while drafting my comic teachers wanted nelly's feelings for cosmo to be more explicit in one direction (either romantic or platonic) and to that i say, simply, it doesnt really matter to the story HOW they love each other, just that they DO. but SECONDLY, it's simply too predictable if an angel-coded alien randomly falls out of the sky and the protagonist immediately falls in love with him. obviously, if it were GOING to happen at all, it would be one thousand times better if the angel-coded alien fell out of the sky and then became smitten with a loser who has the nervous sweats so bad that he walks around half naked on a daily basis and has zero swag. why? um because he was the only person on the entire planet that showed him kindness. DUH!!!!!!!! nervvy nelly is a loser but he is empathetic and has the unrelenting urge to be useful and helpful. cosmo is a chronic loner who has traveled around the universe solo because of his disdain for the lack of kindness he has consistently observed in others. DUH again. even though i cut that tidbit of cosmo lore out of the final cut so how would anyone know that except for me. oopsy. WELL YOU CAN INFER IT! put on your thinking cap

Why can’t the Marvel writing and editing staff invest in a copy of the DSM that isn’t 30 years out of date? We haven’t used that terminology since the last days of the DSM-III in 1993.

In the intervening years, there have been the DSM-IV, the DSM-IV-TR, the DSM-5, the DSM-5-TR, and any of these would provide the correct language to refer to a system. There is no reason anyone should be classifying DID as a personality disorder, or using the word “personalities” to describe alters.

I shudder to think what will happen once Jed MacKay stops writing for Moon Knight if this is the “quality” of writing that Marvel throws at a marginalized community.

Yikes, Marvel. I know y’all don’t care, but could you do the bare minimum? At the very least, put a restraining order on writer Danny Lore and keep them 100 meters away from Moon Knight at all times!

i love that cass' love for humanity is almost reciprocated in a way. almost, but everyone seems to miss her slightly just because no one does really have a frame of reference similar to how she sees the world. and there are so many places where she walks away and the other person probably doesn't understand her but it's clear that. she had an Impact.

every single person who meets her will remember her, they're all fascinated by her in some way, and focusing on that could be beautiful, that she's able to touch so many people

but while that remembrance can come from the way she tries so hard for everyone it's also frequently -

david cain raises her and then when she leaves he's just watching her tapes over and over - shiva has her chosen as one of the people with the potential to kill her - that random guy at the bar follows her to a city after she beats him for refusing to leave her alone - black wind just watching her constantly - those government agents being like how the hell does she exist - the three assassins who almost worship her - these are all actually people who make her uncomfortable in various ways but she's extended a hand to them all anyway and some of them have less impact on her than others but the imprint she leaves is clearly huge

even those who are so scared of her like the guy from issue one - he's still able to recognise her as the one who cut his hand more than eleven years ago when she was a little girl. her face is completely covered and he still is somehow able to tell it's her.

(she haunts someone who she fought and hurt as a kid, in the same way that the person she killed (the person who really showed her the pain she could cause) haunts her. are there others who met and fought this tiny little girl and remembered her with fear? does she wonder about it? or try not to? maybe it hasn't occured to her)

people are fascinated by her, by things that come naturally to her. her kindness, but also the way she moves and the way she sees people and she does want to keep those things for herself but she's uncomfortable with the people who fixate on it like all those memtioned above and they're there anyway and most of the people who do see and appreciate her view of the world and way of moving through it in some way (however distorted their lens is) mainly value her for the fighting it seems and it's so sad.

and once again i have lost whatever point i was making but

it just feels lonely reading bg2000 sometimes, even towards the end when there are so many people around her there's still this wall and wow i wish it ran longer i want to see her meet more people in this run not somewhere else

but also babs and bruce are so important in that respect because they do know her and even if they both do have a hard time actually understanding or when they were getting to know her at first, they're trying and they love her and

also i wish we saw more of brenda. cass' reaction just when she was invited her to the party was so good. - but even before brenda tried to look out for her and just this random stranger (as she initially was) repeatedly offering her kindness and with no strings attached must have been so. where else would cass have been able to have that. ever?

Simon has always been confused on why you gift him toys. Sure, most of the gifts you gave him were some of the things he liked. Bourbon, masks, gloves, make up for him to smudge his eyes with, some daggers and knives. Things that we're useful for him, just him. But later, you gifted him a toy airplane. He makes a comment about it, saying he is not a child anymore and you were better off giving it to Johnny instead.

"No, this is specifically for you, take it."

When he gets to him room, he walks toward his trash can, opening it with the tip of his boot. He gives one more look at the toy, his mood souring before throwing it into the trash. He goes on about his day, training, signing paper work, drills. Doing anything to ignore the pain stinging memories that the toy brought back. Emotions that were buried thousands of feet deep it could reach hell itself. Later, he lies awake in bed, staring at the ceiling, avoiding looking at the cylinder shape that's calling for him in his peripheral.

Fuck.

He pulls the covers off vigorously and stomps over to the trash can. He is standing over it like he's trying to intimidate it, as if it was an enemy he's trying to get rid of in battle. To anyone else, the scene would look comical.

He sighs to himself and reaches down to take out the toy he so cruelly threw away. He sets it on his desk and quickly walks toward his bed, facing away from his desk.

The next day, he wakes up feeling different. He swears he sees his room more vibrant, more lively. That energy follows him through out the day, having his other teammates notice his rather bright mood.

You catch him in the hallway. Pulling him aside to ask him about the paper work you left at his desk this morning. Of course, he notices the way you smile brightly, more so than usual. But he notices that you're not looking at him. More like looking at something next to him.

"What's got you so cheery?"

You turn to look up at him, feeling a bit embarrassed.

"I just..." You take a quick glance at the spot next to him, before bringing your eyes back upon his.

"I just hope you liked your gift." The same bright smile appearing on your face.

He stares at you, examining your words. Your expression.

You think you see his eyes crinkle a bit.

"Yea,"

"I liked it."

Me: my mom is being irritating rn and I'm pissed off. I'm not going to reply tp her text abt going to the botanical gardens tomorrow bc it's a transparent motion

Also me, 5 mins later: maybe I will answer no bc I do have other stuff I want to do tomorrow and the rest of my week is going to be flowers and maybe itd be good to have a day where i am not around plants and flowers. On fhe other hand i dont want her to think I'm upset with her, even tho i am. bc im weak. Also i do like going to the botanical garden...ok: 'Sure'
