The Deepshade

Long, long ago in the land of Erva there was a great forest. The forest stretched across the northernmost half of the great continent of Ruh from one coast to the other, a region dwarfing that occupied by all the nations of men, elves and dwarves together. This wood was wild and wicked, and the canopy of the trees of this forest joined to cast a shadow over the land below, leaving it in perpetual night.

It was known and remembered by many names; the Northwood, the Endless Wilds, the Deepshade, and, to those who lived along its edges, simply The Forest. A great many tales were told about the Forest, and it was said that none who ventured too deep would ever return. Many was the story told over a campfire in those days of the spirits of those who strayed too deep, lured by the mystery hidden in the shadows of that place. Stories of how their restless lost souls wander between the trunks and whisper the tales of their misfortune.

Yet as is the way of people regardless of race or creed many were drawn to the edges of this place. The land at the edges of the Northwood were fertile for farming, and the abundance of lumber carefully harvested provided excellent export for those few brave enough to risk the perils of the shadows. These people were called the Woodsmen and Shadewalkers and over time their story became legend.

The perils of the Deepshade were scarce believed in the great cities of the south, saved for tales of pixies and centaurs to lull children to sleep. As one travelled further north stories might be heard in inns, over ale and accompanied with laughter, of the wild Fey or the ancient druids. Still further northward the laughter quieted and talk over campfires at night was of the wolfmen and the great Beasts. on the edge of the Northwood though, the Woodsmen themselves spoke of all of these things and more; of the respect that must be paid to the Fey and their wild and weird wants; of the ways of hunting or hiding from the Beasts that prowled and hunted in turn; of howls that echoed through the night and whisps that wandered among the trunks and hollows; of the secret language of trees that whispered doom to the man on watch; of shadows birthed in torchlight that stalked and killed the unwary.
