Thoughts on 3x12-3x22 ok lots of thoughts again! I will say I’m not totally sure how I feel about this half of S3. While I was mostly entertained and I enjoyed some of the storylines it did feel like the show was going through the motions for much of this half. I think it had to do with the plans changing with Klaus and wanting to keep him alive for the spin-off. The Evil!Alaric and ring-that-makes-you-murder plot were zzzzzz and Esther was eh as well. I’m also not an “original groupie” I found most of the family annoying or boring especially at this stage so that probably didn’t help (I do like them better on the spin-off particularly Klaus and Bekah). While I don't care about the triangle back and forth the Defan scenes were mostly great and I did enjoy the focus on Stefan's addiction both with bloodlust and his personality.

This show loves its deadbeat Moms, I tell ya! Also did they really make Abby abandoning Bonnie about friggin' Elena!?! This has to be the worst season for Bonnie and I put all that blame on Plec and Dries because they can't stand Bonnie getting anything!

Um Stefan is being way too dramatic about Elena kissing Damon, like come on man. Maybe if you weren't terrorizing her for the last few months she wouldn't have gravitated towards Damon. Even if you want to try and excuse it like "he was compelled to turn it off" his humanity was on for his most recent terrorist activity of threatening to drive her off a bridge! Damon deserved to be punched in the face though, no issues with that.

I like how Elena is like “but Elijah?!” and everyone is like “anyway, let’s dagger an original!” because I agree! The hell I care about Elijah, already stabbed them in the back once.

This Alaric subplot with Meredith and the ring that turns you into a serial killer plot is very confusing and boring.

Nice to see Elena facing some consequences for bringing the Salvatores into everyone's lives and their actions always negatively affecting her friends. Caroline is such a good friend by being able to protect Bonnie there, and not make Elena feel too bad while making a great point. I mean they could have easily manipulated Elijah into backing off by playing up the "humanity and morals" bullshit he pretends to adhere by.

It’s kind of weird how the show randomly started hinting at Matlena being romantic, Matt just throwing his hat in the ring since he’s got nothing better to do.

We have reached the very strange point in my rewatch where DAMON is the least annoying member of the trio right now. He seems to be the only one who understands his brother is an addict, in all forms of life. Like he said Stefan goes from one extreme to the other, he cannot do moderation. He's either the good brother or the ripper there's no middle ground (yet). As soon as Stefan found out Elena kissed Damon he went back to the extreme "good brother persona" which, maybe if you weren't so comfortable with Damon BEING IN LOVE WITH ELENA while you were together this wouldn't have happened, Stefan. He hammed it up in 3x14 with soulful glances and manpain, that obviously worked hook line and sinker since he made it all about Elena. Then the terror at having to be the one to turn Abby to the point Damon knew he had to do it because he doesn't care (neither does Elena but that's a whole nother conversation). Then when she saw him with blood feeding on a girl he acted like everything is ruined! What I'm trying to say is Stefan is insane.

I like that Caroline is using all the methods Stefan taught her when she first turned. When she told Jamie that Abby needs him and to not avoid her so she maintains her humanity with human connection. Just like how Stefan brought Caroline to the swimming hole to be with Matt and convinced Bonnie to give her a daylight ring (I miss my babies this is all I can get right now *sigh*). In general though watching Caroline's vampirism storyline has been wonderful! I have even more appreciation for it during this rewatch.

Now Elena is making Ric killing Caroline's Dad about herself and how bad she feels ugh SHUT UP. I should have kept a tally on how often this happens. I wonder if Caroline ever uses this against Ric, because I would "you didn't do the dishes like you said you would" "well you killed my Dad"

Klaus being like "you're torturing technique is subpar and your skills are lacking" to Rebekah about how she's draining Damon of vervain CTFU!

Okay fine the Delena motel kiss was a great scene, congrats universe you win this one. They actually have been more tolerable this half of the season for me, probably won't last but I haven't wanted to roll my eyes during their scenes recently so baby steps.

Elena being like "oh you're not bias or anything" about Caroline being team Stefan instead of team Damon as if she doesn't have every right to be! The fact that Elena never acknowledges that Caroline's hatred towards Damon is a big reason that I dislike her immensely.

The 1920s decor must be getting to Klaus’ romantic side because he tried to proposition both of his boos tonight. Trying to get Caroline to run away with him even though she can’t stand him. Then calling him and Stefan “strange bedfellows” wanting to rekindle their flame from the ‘20s even though he hates him. Oh well!

Klaus stomping around the porch before using a soccer ball and picket fence for darts really sells it. I just love when Klaus is over-the-top in a funny non-whining way, I could do without the yelling in so many of his scenes.

Tyler saving Elena and saying "I'm not your little bitch anymore" was a great scene for him and overall he's had such a great arc the past few seasons. He's also just so devoted to Caroline and they have a great romance, and I think it's one of the reasons I can never get into the KC scenes. Because I do get the appeal and they have some good scenes (I like the chemistry in the "rescue" scene this episode) but ultimately Caroline never shows anything besides an attraction to Klaus and that's not my vibe.

I know a lot of fandom thinks Elena should have chosen herself instead of picking a Salvatore and while I do agree with that (she needed to pick lots of therapy and anti-depressants) it's kind of fundamentally not who she is. Elena loves love and being in love and because of that she's incapable of choosing to be alone.

I don’t know if Stefan wasn't so off balance battling between extremes this season with his bloodlust and ripper/good brother personalities he would have made the same decision that he did, to save Matt over Elena. Watching it all unfold in a rewatch binge like this I noticed way more instances of that being pointed out (especially by Damon). Look I've heard all the reasons to why Stefan let Elena die, and yes he let her DIE because no one knew she had vampire blood in her system and would come back (even then he know she didn't want to be a vampire). No matter how you spin it "he didn't want her to hate him for letting Matt die" "he always respected her choice and didn't want her to have survivor's guilt" "insert any 'actually it was really selfless excuse' you've read" the fact of the matter is he looked at the love of his life drowning and saved her friend instead. That is so CRAZY!!! That his need to be the "good brother who respects Elena's choices" outweighed her life. I have even seen that he didn't save her because he feels so much regret for forcing Damon to turn and taking that decision away from him, but like when has Stefan EVER respecting Damon's decision to die? Everything he went through this season is because he wouldn't let Damon die, hell the reason he's dead now is because he wouldn't respect that decision! I think Stefan's psyche is so fascinating and how he's essentially an "addict" in so many ways. He does get better at moderation between all of his extremes (personality and bloodlust) though in later seasons, but right now he is hella hella crazy. I think this scene was pretty detrimental to Stefan in re: Elena because it meant Damon was right he's the one who was going to keep Elena alive. All I'm saying is there's a reason Paul Wesley hates this scene.

Like it just reminds me of all the times he's been in her bed/her room against her wishes that at this point she's kind of just accepted it and learnt to tolerate it. I guess it was supposed to be like "oh look they've evolved to the point where she's not uncomfortable anymore" and its like. no.

TVD rewatch thoughts: Elena and Damon oddly get each other (in a very creepy way, lol) which means that they probably have the same primary. @nectargrapes and I said Badger, and I am honestly seeing it in Elena with all the idealization of her dead parents and how pre-series (and even season 1) Elena was involved in Mystic Falls activities.

I love this moment because so much is being said here without actually any words being necessary. They are both aware of the consuming love between them, a love that will never die and transcends time. They are willing to walk into hell, hand-in-hand, as long as they’re together. And they will always together, whether it be in life or in death.

I've read your thoughts on the noncon kiss between K/ataang (and I agree 100%), so I was wondering what your thoughts were on when Damon kept on trying to kiss Elena even after she rejected him?? (Also, I'm genuinely asking! I actually ship Delena, but this has just always bothered me.)

I suppose the simplest answer to this question is ‘I hold vampires with dodgy morals who began the show as villains to a different standard than I hold the heroic protagonist of a kid’s show’--because the fact of the matter is, Damon began the show as a villain. (And, not that it makes much of a difference, but I genuinely do not remember Damon trying to kiss Elena again after finding out that she was wearing vervain in the third episode--with the exception of the first episode of season 2, which was absolutely a horrible moment and I’ve never denied that. So where did he ‘[keep] on trying’? Genuine question, bc it’s been a while since I saw the early seasons of the show so I could be forgetting something.) Damon was unequivocally a villain and a monster in the beginning of the show, and his road to become a good man was long and not at all linear, and he was never going to be the Hero, because that’s just not who he is. (Which is ok, because not all good people have to be.)

The way the EIP kiss is presented, with absolutely nothing bridging the gap between that and Katara making out with Aang in the finale, it makes it seem like she figured out her feelings for him because he crossed her boundaries, rather than coming to that conclusion because she actually had romantic feelings for him and had worked through them on her own time. Aang makes his feelings her problem, without even asking her how she actually feels about him, and reveals that he assumed they would be in a relationship by now (because of the last time he kissed her without her consent, something that he phrases as mutual when it very much was not). This is especially an issue because it’s a children’s show, and this could very well be some of the target demographic’s first concept of consent in a romantic relationship--so the fact that there wasn’t even an attempt to point out that what Aang did was wrong and why, nevermind allow Katara to actually work through her feelings on screen, is a big problem, and when this gets brushed under the rug by Aang/Kataang fans it seriously bothers me.

By contrast, Elena was able to work through her feelings for Damon on her own time. He killed her brother at the beginning of season 2, unquestionably one of his worst actions in the entire show, and he had an arc where he began to realize that he actually cared about what he’d done--he actually cared about her, and was in love with her--and did everything he could to make it up to her. Crucially, though, he never actually made his feelings her problem, once he came to terms with them. He told her that he was in love with her, but then he compelled her to forget it so that she wouldn’t be burdened with that knowledge--and he backed the hell off. He didn’t even ask for her to forgive him until he was literally dying. And he accepted when she said that she still needed time--time he didn’t have--and didn’t actually push the issue until he was so delirious from the werewolf venom and in the middle of vivid hallucinations that he couldn’t control himself.

Elena kissed Damon at the end of season 2, thinking he was going to die--this was 100% initiated by her and unprompted by him, and it was her saying both ‘I forgive you’ and ‘goodbye’, because she thought he was about to die. (And he would have if Katherine hadn’t shown up with Klaus’ blood.) The next time they kissed, you could actually compare it to the Kataang surprise kisses--because when Damon kissed Elena in 3x10 it was unprompted (though she held the kiss and did not react negatively to it, unlike Katara who looked upset at the pre-invasion kiss and got angry at the EIP one)--but the important difference here is that Elena herself phrases it as a mutual kiss later on when she is talking to Stefan and wants to be open with him.

And the real crux of the matter here is, Elena’s feelings are always front and center in her relationship with Damon. She initiates most of their pre-relationship kisses--2x22, 3x19 (where she nearly fucking jumped his bones lmfao), 4x7--and the one where she didn’t is a kiss a kiss she describes as mutual, and as something she needs to confess to her ex-boyfriend to keep all her cards on the table. (Actually, I just went back to refresh my memory, and she doesn’t just say ‘we kissed’, like Damon said to Bonnie the next day. She says ‘There’s something I have to tell you. And it’s not because I feel guilty that it happened, it’s because I feel guilty that you don’t know. I kissed Damon.’ And then Stefan goes on to punch Damon because of it, because that doesn’t have any gross implications at all, but I’m not gonna go into that bc this isn’t an ‘I hate Stefan Salvatore’ rant. Yet.)

Elena chooses who she wants to say goodbye to in the season 3 finale. Elena chooses who she wants to be with in the beginning of season 4 (because, whatever she felt for Damon [and she owns those feelings and admits to them multiple times without prompting], she never had closure with Stefan, and she needed that before she was able to truly move on), and she chooses who she wants to spend the rest of her existence with after that.

Elena’s choice is crucial in her relationship with Damon, in a way that Katara’s never is with Aang. And I’m not trying to pretend that there aren’t a lot of elements to Damon and Elena’s relationship that aren’t questionable (he’s a 172-year-old vampire with a lot of murders in his past and a history of being a monster pre-redemption, and she’s an 18-year-old girl when they start dating), but again the difference there is that I have different standards for a) enemies-to-lovers relationships vs friends-to-lovers where they are on the same side from the start, and b) vampires vs Kid Heroes, so I’m going to have different expectations going in, and am probably going to react with more distaste to actions in one that might be comparatively tame, but still read very differently in different contexts.

It’s 100% understandable to have a line in the sand re: sexual violence/rape, but there are still vast differences in what is considered ‘par for the course’ in a show like TVD vs one like ATLA. In TVD, compelling humans is normal, and almost every vampire has had sex with humans under compulsion, so when this is brought out as some mark against Damon and only Damon, it makes me wonder why some fans hold him to a completely different standard than literally every other vampire on the show (possible exceptions being the ones who get turned during the show--although Caroline compelled Matt to forget she was a vampire and then continued her relationship with him sooooooo). Not liking TVD because it has issues with sexual violence/how consent is addressed when half the cast can take away the other half’s free will? Very valid. Not liking Damon, specifically, for these reasons when stanning characters like Stefan, Katherine, or.... p much any other vampire on the show???? Not so valid. 

Annnnd I’ll get off my soapbox now lmfao. I still have A Lot To Say apparently, and some day I’m gonna get into why the TVD fandom has such a weird relationship w the show’s issues with consent (like why Stefan and Katherine stans will call Damon a rapist while ignoring that their faves are also rapists by the very same metric), but I think that’s a bit beyond the scope of this ask.

Thought on 5x12 - 5x22 welp what a nose dive in quality that took! Not that the beginning of the season was great writing but at least I was having fun, this not so much. There's stuff I liked of course, the Steroline build-up is great and they got some beautiful scenes. I love Liv and Luke and the finale was awesome (this and Katherine in 1x22 were the best cliffhangers they ever did). The problem is the bad parts all outweighed that. I cannot STAND Enzo and this is the worst Damon has ever been which is saying a lot. Every DE monologue made me groan and the travelers are probably the worst villain this show ever had (Markos wasn't terrible though, he fit the description). But I made it, and you can read me bitching about it below!

I really hate how they used Caroline having sex with Klaus to somehow make her come around to DE because now she knows what it's like to "want the bad guy" RME! Caroline sleeping with Klaus was about her taking an opportunity to get him to leave her alone and have an itch scratched. Damon is still her rapist.

Honestly Stefan punching Tyler has a lot more to do with him not liking Tyler and less to do with him thinking Tyler was in the wrong. Do I think Tyler deserved to get punched absolutely not, Caroline needed to leave him the hell alone! But I’m not Stefan and I like Tyler and think he’s allowed to be really fucking angry at Caroline for awhile.

What Katherine said to Damon as Elena is exactly what Elena SHOULD say to Damon but never does.

The switch from “I want Stefan Salvatore” “Well I’d hate to be the person standing in your way” to a shot of Caroline is absolutely intentional. This scene is also adorable and say what you want but Stefan is absolutely flirting here, especially when he's like "I have no idea what Klaus saw in you, what was he thinking!" because he knows EXACTLY what Klaus saw in her!

“Come on Damon, you’re better than this” he’s really not though Stefan! He’s pretty consistently been awful this whole show.

LMFAO there was a definitely a lot of foreshadowing that Stefan was gonna kill Enzo.

Caroline looks so hot and gorgeous in that dress and the way her hair is clipped *faints* no wonder Stefan checks her out. There's also a few moments where the wind blows her hair and she just looks stunning. Bonnie looks smoking hot too, I love her bob and the lace on her dress is super sexy.

Katherine’s eye roll at the dramatics of Damon kidnapping Jeremy and needing to show her concern for Jeremy... honestly same, this is a stupid ass plot. I do appreciate that Katherine knew to be worried about Caroline if she has feelings for Stefan. Like Damon is a moron so dispatching him was easy but Caroline, she’s gotta know what she’s up against.

EL OH EL the framing is so funny though how Caroline keeps popping up every-time Kathlena gets a moment with Stefan. And he looks guilty AF when she opens the door. Caroline also looks so good standing in the doorway with her little turn.

Ugh Stefan is totally jealous of Tyler this show is so stupid you had the perfect love triangle set-up and you BLEW IT! FOR ENZO! I mean Stefan really? Acting like Tyler was gonna kill Caroline, please he knows that wasn’t going to happen. He just doesn’t want Caroline to go back to him because he’s totally crushing on her and refuses to see it!! He’s the same as Caroline because his bad news was actually good news for him.

Uh we don’t all love Matt Donovan Katherine, okay. Some of us have wished for his death every season. Words matter.

I appreciate Stefan pointing out Elena has never cared about Damon doing horrible shit before, and that’s like his first clue something is off.

Katherine asking who Stefan loves more Damon or Elena, girl don’t play that stupid game! You are only gonna win stupid prizes! Katherine should also know better than this, she knew Damon was the key to saving Stefan in 3x09 because she knew he wouldn’t let Damon die even with his humanity off. It feels like the show is doing that thing again where they make characters dumber than previously shown for the plot. Maybe you could say Katherine was off her game because she became impatient, but like she didn't survive for 500 years being impatient! DUH Stefan would do the most Stefan thing ever and put himself in danger instead of killing Damon, I mean what show have you been watching Katherine?

I love how domestic Steroline got in these last few episodes, Caroline made herself right at home at the Boarding house AS SHE SHOULD!

You know I love LOVE Caroline but girl leave that man alone! Tyler needs space. While I agree about Caro monologue that people always expect good from her and she has flaws Tyler doesn’t need to forgive her and he really hasn’t been harping on her that much. Damon was right Caro took the nuclear option to end her relationship with Tyler. Even if I understand why she had sex with Klaus she still knew what it would do to Tyler.

I guess in retrospect Katherine was right, she made sure if she couldn’t have Stefan no one could.

I feel like the writers did a lot more damage to how they see Elena's character after the sire bond storyline than they realize. I don't mean that it ruined her character, I mean it ruined how they feel about her and how the inevitably treat her. This was a really fucked up thing to do to Elena, I mean she had complete autonomy of her body taken away for 3 (almost 4) episodes! That would have never happened in S1-3 because of how the writers felt about her, she was the special snowflake of human frailty MUST PROTECT. You can also tell by her styling, it's been off and on all season (especially the hair) as opposed to when she always looked stunning in S1-3.

THIS SCENE! When I watched this episode live I was ready to give up because I was so over the triangle of doom and straight-up not having a good time and then Steroline got these scenes in this episode and I was like OMG this is really gonna happen!?! When Stefan said "Me, and I would do it for you, too" he just confirmed that Caroline was up there with Elena and Damon for him aka people that he LOVES and Caro's face was my face like *tingle*. Then Caroline confirms the same when she says "You'd do the same for me right" and HIS FACE!!! He really didn't know she was so ride or die for him, and then his total jealousy over Enzo, I cry.

Damon and Elena are THE WORST my god. This is the stupidest dialogue I have ever heard on this show and that's only because it's second to their monologue in 4x23!

I’m sure Damon’s dialogue is supposed to be sexy but all I feel is rape-y.

God I absolutely LOVE the scene where Caroline can’t kill Tom and snaps Enzo’s neck instead! The way she reacts to Stefan is always more intense than any of her other love interests, sorry not sorry. She looked into those green eyes and remembered Stefan said he was a good person and the emotion from that meant she couldn’t do it.

Liv asking to be killed rather than listen to Damon and Elena, bestie I CAN RELATE!

Why are we doing with the Jeremy might be cheating on Bonnie subplot with Liv? Just so unnecessary MY GOD LEAVE BONNIE ALONE ALREADY!

The van scene is so <3333 I think it’s very obvious they both have feelings for each other in this scene. The way Stefan keeps looking at Caroline’s lips and the sultry voice he’s using *flails* and Caroline feels it too. I think this is the moment she realizes she’s falling for him. For Stefan I feel it started last season and it got even more confusing after his amnesia stint and this is probably the point where he starts pushing his feelings away because it's scaring him. He does not think Caroline has feelings for him with the way he talks about Enzo and her so for him it’s better to push it away than possibly ruin their friendship. Even if he’s such a dummy because OBVIOUSLY STEFAN she’s got a thing for you. I love them so much man, they just make me feel things!

Welp Bonnie hasn’t been tortured in like 3 episodes so of course we had to make up for that -_-

Oh man they even put Elena in her old S1/2 wardrobe and her straight hair is back! Totally gassing it up in these visions huh?

It’s amazing how interesting the traveler plot sounds with taking over MF like invasion of the body snatchers as opposed to how unbelievably boring it actually is.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before but I really don’t like Kol and I don’t know why I have to keep dealing with him.

As someone who has watched the Steroline 8x02 proposal let’s just say A LOT, the Stelena vision proposal in 5x18 IS NOTHING LIKE IT YOU WEIRDOS. I mean the ring was in a drawer, that's literally it.

I did not remember that Vicki got sucked into Cade’s hell and IDK that’s a bit harsh show, Vicki did not deserve hell.

Turns out hell is every Delena scene this season.

The Stelena scene by the fire is an example of how the show uses nuance in scenes to keep ships alive depending on how you read into it. For me it feels like closure, they talk about how they grew apart and ending the spell kind of signifies that draw they felt has ended. However, you could say it shows they'll always love each other and now with the spell gone if they found their way back to each other it would be completely natural. YMMV.

I always thought "I think you can either be friends with someone or in love with them. I don't think you can be both" was such a (!!!) quote from Stefan since it shows you how he compartmentalizes people because he's a control freak. He puts the women he loves into these two categories from everything we've seen so far. Caroline and Lexi fit into the "friend" box, Elena and Katherine fit into the "in love" box and the two boxes do not mix. He moves Elena into the friend box now since he's not in love with her anymore, but the problem is Caroline. Unlike Lexi Stefan does feel more than friendship for her (he says it in 6x16 argue with the wall) but he can't mix the boxes! He doesn't think you can mix the boxes! He doesn't think you can have both. This line is a Chekhov's gun IMO he says it because we're either gonna learn it's true or it's not.

I was about to say how much of a loser is Stefan that he keeps helping Elena study but obviously he would not miss a chance to be pretentious so I get it.

Poor Tyler this is the beginning of his tragic downfall of the writers not GAF about him anymore.

Enzo on the other hand is A LOSER!

This episode might be rock bottom for me in terms of being boring and stupid. I would almost rather go back to a stupid DE monologue, ALMOST.

Oh it’s the Steroline first kiss cabin!

Hehe Damon called Bill Forbes a dickwad, sometimes I like you Damon I admit.

Caroline knowing right away that Stefan and Elena were being lying liars who lie, my BB has come so far in her ability to read people. And her idea to expose them is through charades because she’s always gotta have a theme!

I have no idea what’s going on with Jeremy, Tyler, Matt and Bonnie besides the fact that Bonnie deserves better. Always and forever.

“I didn’t want you to think any less of me” TINGLE!! When I saw this scene live I was like okay I give in I WANT ALL THE STEROLINE! Knowing full well it could still get used as a prop for SE but like I couldn’t help myself! He brushed the dirt off her cheek! He did the thing he always did with Elena where he only wanted her to see the good parts because that’s what this fool does when he’s in love! Truth be told I do not think Stefan is in love with Caroline here, I think he loves her as a friend but his feelings for her have become something more than friendship. Caroline however knows she’s falling in love you can see it on her face when he walks away.

The writing for Elena is very passive these past few episodes and it feels weird. Like she’s just there, she doesn’t move the plot or really do much but exist in the scenes they put her in. It’s such a stark difference to when she moved everything and everyone revolved around her. Oh well!

Stefan was so proud of that “if Caroline Forbes were here right now we’d both be laughing” joke. What a dork!

The anti magic spell was a good twist, and I like that it took awhile to get rid of.

Ugh I hate this scene! Poor Tyler that was cruel and I hate that they de-powered him! I think de-powering for male characters on this show is basically a death sentence because the ‘verse works on hard power for men and once you lose that your days are numbered (unless you’re Matt Donovan).

No Lexi he doesn’t, because he’s a moron.

Bonnie that was obviously not Stefan lol but she’s going through a lot I will let it slide. Why does Silas want to be resurrected now! Everyone was so ready to die until they actually did huh!

Stefan and Elena; who share many (some explicitly pointed out in the show (by characters and the narrative) and some more implied or subtextual) similarities and traits and values, with numerous parallels between them, who have several times outright stated what attracted them to each other and why they love each other (ex: Elena affirming that Stefan accepting her choice despite not “wanting” to is exactly why she loves him),

were retconned into being ~magically cursed~ to fall in love because they’re the doppelgängers of two people in love (with the implication being that those feelings were disingenuous or at least not entirely their own)

Not Damon and Elena who got together bc of the sire bond, prior to which there were constant and consistent confirmations of Stelena’s feelings for each other and the future they wanted together, with that whole issue being dropped after Elena gets her humanity back, who constantly talk about how toxic they are or how Damon is the worst choice for her, with their love (or maybe just her love for him) being in canon something said to be inexplicable and something neither of them can “control”
