AITA for repeatedly losing my temper at my kinda-friend? I (17F) have anger issues and I'm working on mitigating it, however, losing my temper always involves yelling and insulting people. Usually I think this is bad and apologize profusely when I lose control.
However, this kinda-friend (16F) who I'll call E, has absolutely no respect for other people's personal belongings, space, or time. She always grabs and plays with my things during class, or our mutual friend's items (16F), and as all three of us are artists, we carry around pretty expensive equipment. (Think Micron ink pens, Winsor & Newton paint, Derwent pencils, etc., just as reference. Thankfully no Copics lmao.)
The mutual friend will be referred to as J.
So, E has been told by both of us to stop taking our art supplies and playing with it, to the point where I'll yell sometimes, and she absolutely refuses to listen to us. She'll claim that she's forgotten what we've told her and put down the item just for her to pick it up again five seconds later. The problem is that she sometimes breaks these items or injures us - she'll play with my x-acto blade and cut me, or break J's graphite pencils, or push my watercolor palette off the desk. I've really tried to be patient about it, but it's proving to be difficult.
J is quite soft spoken, so I end up doing most of the reprimanding. E also brings up inappropriate topics that make J and I uncomfortable, as well as disturbing us when we're busy and then sulking when she doesn't get our immediate attention - once I told her three times to let me do my classwork before snapping, and E cried. She never does anything in school and hates all of our teachers, so she's pretty rude to them. All my work gets copied by her. She really annoys me, but I do feel terrible that I seem to lose control so often around E, since no one deserves to be yelled at.
However, this all came to a peak today when R (16M) and I won prizes for winning a mini-game and asking an interesting question during a seminar at school respectively; the gift was a black notebook that I didn't even like, which is an important tidbit to keep in mind. R left his gift still wrapped in his bag when he left the classroom for break time, so it was just J, E, and myself in there. Upon seeing what I had unwrapped, E went to R's bag and opened it - since all four of us are friends, we thought E was just being "jokingly" invasive as usual and were on alert, but didn't stop her.
J asked what she was doing and E said she was grabbing the gift out of R's bag. This caught my attention, so I asked why she was doing that. E told us that she wanted the book, and when J reminded her that the gift was, in fact, not hers, E said (and I wish I was kidding because this is replaying in my head in 4K HD right now like oh my god pls) "I know. It should be mine." Had she asked for my notebook, I would've given it up happily. I've got too many empty sketchbooks and notebooks at home.
I immediately stood up, but allowed J to handle the situation because I didn't trust myself not to react violently. J eventually lost her temper too and that's when I jumped in and started my yelling routine. I always feel bad whenever I do this, because it's not something I enjoy, but in this particular situation I just can't muster up the guilt? E is extremely irritating, but she tells us she has a horrible home life, so I try to be understanding. Except this was just completely intolerable. R even said that he'd predicted this would happen and to just give her the damn notebook - I vetoed that so we wouldn't enable E.
I really don't know if my reaction was overblown because I shouted a lot and said things like "you were given a brain - use it" and "you're a terrible person with no morals". It's ridiculous to say all that because it's (at the end of the day) high school drama, but I really can't understand why she acted that way. I don't know if I'm in the wrong in this situation. I wish she would listen when we tell her nicely not to do something, but even when I was blowing up at her, she was just smiling as if it was a joke. Should I apologize? I've apologized before when I lost my temper, but I have completely lost all will to be civil with her after this. The teachers are tired too - when she disappears from class or talks back, they just let her be. We can't really go to them because she'll feel betrayed and then get mad at us, which is a whole ordeal, because she's known to destroy and sabotage other people's items because of a grudge.
This is really lengthy. I apologize. I just feel terrible about the situation because I don't feel any guilt for my anger like I probably should. So, AITA?
What are these acronyms?

The lustrous Hratgrog
My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum
Tumblr media
A bit of a big experiment this week; painted with a brush pen using Derwent inktense paint, with no underlying sketch for reference, because I wanted to challenge myself and try something different! The white markings on the veins of the wings are Vallejo model colour white paint, since I don't have a white in my Derwent paint set.
Thought process under the cut…
"[The following are largely disconnected sentences plucked out of a multi-page sermon making this animal into a complicated spiritual metaphor.]
It is my intention to paint a picture of the Hratgrog, whose wings are sheathed in silver and whose tail has the pale colour of gold.
The Hratgrog, the subject of this account, is said to have red feet.
The surface of the wings is suffused with the colour of sapphire, because the soul of a contemplative man takes on the appearance of heaven. But the sapphire colour of the wings is marked by traces of shining white, as the white of snow is tinged with sapphire. The mixture of snow-white and sapphire in the wings signifies purity of the flesh and the love of contemplation.
The Hratgrog, therefore, has saffron-coloured eyes.
The rest of the Hratgrog’s body matches the colour of a wild sea.
The first characteristic of the Hratgrog is that instead of song it brings forth a lament. The second, is that it lacks bile; the third, it likes to kiss; the fourth, it flies in groups; the fifth, it does not live by theft; the sixth, it gathers better-quality grain; the seventh, it does not feed on corpses; the eighth, it nests in holes in rocks; the ninth, it rests on flowing water so that if it catches sight of the shadow of a hawk, it can more swiftly avoid its approach; the tenth, it rears twin young."
I was at a bit of a loss as to where to start with this one, we know it has wings, feet, eyes, and it rests on water. The rest is all notes about the colours, so we don't really have any hints about what kind of creature this is, even…
My default for 'beast with wings' is to assume it's a bird, but I kept coming back to the wings being 'sheathed in silver', particularly given we are later told that the wings are actually blue and white… This led me to assume that it has to be an insect with a silver elytra (wing cases); while some true bugs have a coloured, harder section to their forewings, the only two types of insect to possess elytra are beetles and earwigs, and since beetles are much more likely to actually fly, a beetle it is!
Wings are the colour of sapphire (blue), with black veins highlighted in white. As an aside, I learned a lot about how beetle wings work and fold away!
It has long, thin legs with red feet, the better for resting on the surface of water like a pond skater, as well as the red eyes and yellow/golden tail mentioned in the description. Given it eats grain (I assume that since it is so holy, people leave out food for it, since it doesn't steal its food), I made it a weevil (like the grain weevil, which probably does steal its food), partially because the idea of them rubbing their snouts together as if kissing is super cute!

As soon as I saw the new Valve art, I knew I had to draw spy in that killer dress.
I based it on the official art along with this stock photo (below). You can see my progress pictures on my IG story, page, and further down on this blog. He was extremely fun to draw, been ages since I've drawn a full head-toe humanoid character portrait.
Media used: Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen wallet (I used the 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 nibs), Derwent Academy graphite sketching pencils (I used 2B), and Faber-Castell dust free art eraser (green), Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolour paint brushes (Round 1, Round 4, Flat Shader 6), Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolour paper cold pressed NOT A3, WHSmith 24 watercolour pencils, Derwent Watercolour pencils.

love you're art so much and i really want to learn how to draw as well as you <33
Do have a question though, well two.
1. what brushes do you use?
2. what app do you use?
Thank you, nonny!! 💜💜💜 you flatter me! It’s all patience for yourself as you learn. And when you run out of patience for yourself, you take a break, and then find some more patience. And have fun.
I use the ProCreate app which sadly is only available for iOS. I tinkered a bit with the settings for the pen and the brushes I use and that’s it.
As for the brushes: I mostly use the gouache brush, both for painting and blending. For sketches I use the Derwent pencil brush, sometimes the HB pencil brush. Those are all default brushes in the app.

The anthropophagous Mlekragg
Tumblr media
My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum (thank you again for running these!)
Pencil sketch, then lines in Pentel brush pen, and colours with Derwent inktense paint.
As ever, reasoning under the cut...
"In India there is a beast called the Mlekragg. It has a triple row of teeth, the face of a man, and grey eyes; it it blood-red in color and has a lion’s body, a pointed tail with a sting like that of a scorpion, and a hissing voice. It delights in eating human flesh. Its feet are very powerful and it can jump so well that neither the largest of ditches nor the broadest of obstacles can keep it in."
Now, I'm 90% sure I know what this is, and if it is the case, it's interesting to read the original descrption… With that in mind, I figured I'd go with exactly what the authors wrote...
The first thing I wanted to work out was how the face worked; I looked at lion skulls, cat skulls and human skulls, and tried to combine the three - that's the drawing in the top left of the image. The rearmost (and longest) set of teeth are those of a lion, the middle set are those of a human (with the squared-off incisors), and the front (and smallest) teeth are those of a domestic cat. I used this as a reference when drawing the face of the creature. The ears were a little tricky to work out, but I figured I'd just stick with a lion's ears here, since they's almost part-way between a domestic cat and a humans's ears.
The eyes, I didn't have a grey paint, but I wanted to make them shaped more like a human. It felt like it needed a bit more going on, so I added some thick fur (almost a mane) on the back of the head and the neck; I really want to look at some other brush pen art, to get a better idea of what it's possible to do with this medium (I was hoping to get more of a flowing look to the hair actually like a lion's mane, which didn't pull off, but I feel this works with the general vibe of the creature…)
To reflect it's jumping prowess, I have the Mlekragg leaping straight up in the air. I really liked the idea of the image flowing like an 'S' shape, so that heavily informed a lot about the image. I did look up some reference from leaping cats (particularly snow leopards), but the size of the page and the decisions I'd already made meant the pose was kind of stuck - I feel like if I were to revisit this type of thing, I'd have it making a horizontal leap, arms outstretched. A lot of the proportions were taken directly from lions, but the unusual pose makes it look a little weird.
@sweetlyfez made the very valid point that at this point, its a running joke that we can't trust bestiary authors to know remotely what a scorpion looks like, so as long as there is some kind of 'stinger' we could go in any direction with the tail. However, I really wanted to draw a scorpion tail, so that's what we ended up with (scopions are rad). Did you know that in some lions, the tuft on the end of their tail conceals a sharp bone spur? (Lions are also rad)
It's red, it's got a very clear colour guide, what encouraged me to pull out the inktense paint blocks, and which was a nice change of pace too. I also think that next time, I need to draw the outline in pencil, ink with the brush pen, then colour - I painted the colour on before inking the lines, which meant it was really hard to see the pencil lines…!
