ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.
I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.
She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!
This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.
No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.

Racing Development Post
This is my development post of the racing game elevator pitch from my last post.
I have followed the tutorial provided in the IGB120 tutorial for the racing game and have the basic requirements of the top-down racing game. The initial implementation of the game which includes, forward traffic, oncoming traffic, trees, roads, scores, player collision and movement.

My Plans
Implementing a new type of movement for the player, allowing it to move up and down the playing field (speeding up and slowing down). The movement will now use up, down, left, right arrow keys instead of just left and right arrow keys.
Implementing powerups like an invincibility powerup that allows the player's car to destroy the cars it collides into, rewarding more points for each car destroyed.
Increasing the difficulty of the game as the game progresses, by increasing the speed of the player car and/or increasing the speed of the oncoming traffic. The speed increase will be small, but significant.

Week 8 - Racing Development Post
In the development process, I firstly changed the colour of the car try to make it looks like Taxi and added lights effect animation.

Since my screen is 1920x1080, and the original codes doesn't work well, so I changed the values into the one that fit the resolution.

Now it has the basic function and works correctly. In the future update, I will try to add more elements like surrounding buildings and change some sprite drawings. I'll also try to change the orientation of the road.

Week 6
This week i worked on my asteroids game in GDevelop.
To recap, my game's concept is a take on the popular asteroids game but with some significant changes including:
Collect coins on things you destroy
Upgrade your gun / player
Place objects to destroy more things
The asteroids changed to mobs / zombies
I have made some development on this so far, even play testing with 2 people at the end of this development week.

As you can see, I have basic temporary artwork and UI that functions. The only current upgrades are bullet cooldown and player speed. I got 2 people to play test and the feedback is summarized as follows:
Gameplay:
Controls were intuitive (4/5).
Gameplay was enjoyable (4/5), but too easy (1/5 difficulty). Players could easily remain stationary and win.
Upgrade System:
Moderately rewarding (3/5). Upgrades weren't impactful and felt slightly distracting. Suggests adding shortcuts.
Clear explanations but could use more specificity (4/5).
Visuals and UI:
Visual style moderately matched gameplay (3/5); background inconsistent across devices.
Excellent clarity in UI (5/5), especially health, money, and upgrades.
General Feedback:
Liked the movement and turning mechanics most.
Suggested adding more enemy variety, boss fights with health bars, and special item drops.
Noted bugs: game doesn't end on player death; map lacks boundaries.
Enjoyable but room for improvement.
I will improve on all this feedback before finalizing the game.
Book Reading
This week I read chapter 10 of the Game Design Workshop book and have found an interesting mechanic i'd like to discuss, called Upkeep. This is found in the game Warcraft III. Basically, the more units you had, the less gold you earned. It was Blizzard’s way of stopping players from just maxing out their army and sitting on a pile of resources.
They wanted smaller, more tactical fights where your hero actually felt important—not just another unit in a giant blob. Upkeep forced players to make decisions: do I go all-in with a big army and risk going broke, or keep it lean and rich?

Funny part is they originally called it “Tax” and players hated it. Just changing the name to “Upkeep” made it easier to swallow. Small detail, but it shows how wording alone can shift how people feel about a mechanic.

Assignment 3 Development Progress
For assignment 3 I joined a group with Connor, Callum, and Kymani, we all decided my game was the strongest to develop out of the three. For the playtesting Connor was the questionaire role, Kymani and Callum were the note takers, and my roles was the script / notetaker for parts. I first started by giving my group my first version of my game that didn't have a whole lot of progress in terms of levels. We decided one level per person was a fair amount of work to distribute between each group memeber while also helping eachother where we could. I created the first level of the game alongside all of the menu screens in the game. Throughout the process of building this game there were some time managment issues with some team members in the group, alongside minor issues with the learning curve of GDevelop and the degree of learning each member did. Besides our issues we created a fun game that is playable.

Assignment 3 Development Progress
Work on Assignment 3 has properly gotten underway. Within our group, each of us have begun working on our respective tasks. I have been assigned to work on the UI, and as this week, have designed a health bar and have begun work on a sidebar detailing information about the players current status. My other group members have begin working on a wave spawning mechanic, as well as designing and implementing several ultimate abilities for the player to use. The GitHub is working perfectly, so we have been able to effortlessly collaborate on our changes. Communication is working perfectly too, and we have been routinely sharing updates regarding the progress of the game on Discord.
The reading for this week was Chapter 11 from the textbook, which focused heavily on fun and accessibility, something that is crucial for fostering a positive player experience. While working on our game, we are constantly keeping in mind the essence of challenge, wanting our game to be a fun test of player skill. We have a score which is shown to the player at the end of every round to show how well they performed, and a difficulty scaling with increased waves provides a constant challenge and offers opportunities for players to improve. The combat is always randomised, so there is always a new experience for players each time they play. Furthermore, the powerup system one of my group members is working on will hopefully add another element of variety to our game, with each powerup changing the moment-to-moment gameplay.
As a quick aside, I also wrote a short piece of music to be used as the game's main theme. Unfortunately it is saved as a .WAV file, so I can't upload it to Tumblr, but it'll be present the moment our game is finished and published.
There's only a few more weeks left to work on the game before our final submission, so we're going to keep pushing to develop the best game we possibly can.

Asteroid Development Post
This is my development post of the asteroid elevator pitch from my last post.
I have followed the tutorial provided in the IGB120 tutorials and have the base game and mechanics of the game ready. I then added a global variable for scores to ensure that it is shared by the stage and game over scene as shown in the image below.

To add some surprise factor to the normal gameplay loop, I decided to develop a fast-moving asteroid that moves towards the player at fast speeds. I had some trouble figuring out how to randomize the location of the asteroids so that they are spawning outside the playing area and eventually moving towards the player. Then by using the Random() expression, I finally figured it out and got something close to what I had envisioned.
My Plans
I would like to add a more random interval for the fast-moving meteors
Fix the bug where meteors can spawn directly on the player
Add an animation for the exclamation mark warning
Maybe aliens will come after you once a certain score is obtained to add more variety to the gameplay

Week 6 - Asteroids Development Post
Changing the drawing and animation of the ship.

Added an active skill to the default mode that uses Lshift to speed up the ship. A cooldown mechanism and speed up duration will be added in a future update.

Added brightness to the default weapon and set it to a medium attack speed to differentiate it from other weapons.

Added drop bombs and set them to slow attack speed, with different damage and range to be added in a future update.

Added laser attack, which provides higher attack speed and a larger area, will reduce damage in a future update.

Added different damage values for different sized stars, and will add different life values for different stars in a future update.

Weapon attacks on stars will destroy them, while only large stars have a certain probability of dropping healing packs.

Each healing pack only restores one life point.

In a future update I will try to implement different ship modes, such as a tank mode which gives higher lives but lower speed, or has different active skills.
