Footballer with type 1 diabetes provides inspiration with World Cup goal
Spain's Nacho Fernandez has given hope to millions of people with type 1 diabetes by becoming the first person with the condition to score in a World Cup. Nacho, whose full name is Jose Ignacio Fernandez Iglesias, was told his "footballing days were over" after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes aged 12. But, determined to prove his doubters wrong, the 28-year-old has successfully forged out a professional career and now plays for one of the biggest teams in the world, Real Madrid. And on Friday 15 June, the defender scored his nation’s third goal in their Group B clash with rivals Portugal in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, proving that having type 1 diabetes is no barrier to success at the highest level. The goal, a stunning strike, was not just celebrated by the Spanish fans, with people with type 1 diabetes also rejoicing in the occasion. On Twitter, Helen Lazarus (@LazarusLife) who has type 1 diabetes‏ tweeted: "Apparently having Type 1 diabetes doesn't stop you scoring an absolute stonker of a goal #diabetesweek #TalkAboutDiabetes". Nacho is enjoying a glittering career, having won the Champions League and the top football division in Spain, La Liga. Speaking about his diagnosis, Nacho has previously said: "I was diagnosed with (type 1) diabetes. On the Friday the doctor told me there was no way I could go on playing football. Imagine any 12-year-old kid being told that. It was awful. On the Monday I went back into the hospital and I saw a different doctor, Dr Ramirez. "I was so happy because he said the opposite was true. He said sport was the most important thing for me and I had to carry on playing and competing. It wasn't true that my condition meant I couldn't be a sportsman. And here I am still fighting." People with diabetes who play sport or want to become more physically active, can visit our Diabetes and Sport section for help and information. How my diagnosis went
I read a lot of story's about how people got diagnosed. Thought I would write mine too. So here it goes: I was 12 years old. It was kinda hot outside. It was around april or may, but it was nice weather. Since i am transgender (born a girl) i had a vagina 🙄😶 and i got an infection (sorry if this is tmi). Which, according to my mom, is quite strange for someone my age. We went to de gp and she gave me some medicine for it. Unfortunately it didn't go away and I had a horrible summer. After the summer i went to highschool and had to cycle for 5km. Its not a lot but i couldn't make it and had to stop every few minutes. I lost weight too. My mom at first thought i had anorexia because i used to be a little overweight my whole life and i was trying to lose some kilo's. But then she noticed i ate everything there was in the house and i drank around 7 or 8 litres of water a day. We are now in November. On the 17th of november, It was diabetesweek and you could go to the farmacy to get your bloodsugar tested. Mine was 36.6 mmol/L. I remember asking my mom: "well.... is that good or not?" All she said was: i think we are going to the gp again. That same afternoon the gp send me to the ER and at that point i realised i was sick. Still didn't understand what it all meant but i knew there was something going on. After a few hours i could go to the childrensward. There they explaned what diabetes was and that as soon as i could inject myself, I could go home. I really didn't think it was that bad. Well i was sick, but i am not gonna die, i just need to learn to live with it. The next day i made sure i could go home. I was very brave at that point of my life. I injected myself everyday for the next 6 months. After that (by that time i was 13 years old) i started to use an insulin pump, the medtronic paradigm. 8 years later (that was a month ago) I started using the Omnipod. Unfortunately, 4 years after i got diagnosed, i got severe depression and i stopped caring about my diabetes and myself in general. Since a year I'm slowly getting back up with my diabetes again :) Thanx for reading

Cambridgeshire-based Zoe Whitefield has successfully reversed her type 2 diabetes after an impressive weight loss, despite the complications of only having one kidney. After a difficult few years - discovering she had type 2 diabetes and finding out her son was diagnosed with special needs – the 43-year-old turned to food for comfort. Read how she turned things around with The 1:1 Diet and get in touch if you want to know more. https://www.one2onediet.com/blog/Zoe-Whitefield/1516889/ #Diabetesstories #Diabetesuk #Diabetesweek #Diabeteswareness ☎️Jo Cox 07976 897 696 👩🏼‍🦱 The 1:1 Diet with Jo Cox, by Cambridge Weight Plan 🚚 UK deliveries 👍🏻 Free Consultations 🙌🏻 1:1 Support, Advice and Guidance ⏰ Flexible appointment times 🌐 https://linktr.ee/JoCox #womensupportingwomen #girlcode #bettertogether #womeninbusiness #loveyourself #one2onediet #inittogether #mumbod #mum-life #bristol #mummy #portishead #itcanbedone #dietbloggers #friends #support #weightlosstransformation #womenempowerment #one2onedietwithjocox #beyourownboss #businessowner #northsomersetsmallbusiness #potisheadbusiness #supportlocalportishead #bristolsmallbusiness #localbristol (at The 1:1 Diet with Jo Cox) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPoIo5OB5Sn/?utm_medium=tumblr
