It’s time for chapter 3! I will try adding more translation notes for particular words/phrases in footnotes from now on, which might be fun for people who are learning Japanese (although I don’t recommend calling anyone a 穀潰し in real life lol). I know I said last time that this book seemed a little light on the bite play but I actually take it back, this chapter was pretty steamy with both Ayato and Shuu… (〃ω〃) Have fun reading!

STORY Following her father’s job transfer, Komori Yui is sent to live with the Sakamaki brothers. However, these six brothers turn out to be sadistic, ill-tempered vampires. The men are after Yui’s sweet and incredibly rare blood, and go to great lengths toying with her body and soul to get it. Before long, Yui finds herself trapped in an alluringly dangerous love game(1)...

1. 吸血愛戯 (ラブゲーム): Stylised as ‘love game’ but written with the characters for bloodsucking (吸血), love (愛), and play (戯). The latter character also has a connotation of playfulness/mischief.

That night, the moon stood high in the sky, but the Sakamaki mansion was wrapped in fog.

In the dining room, Yui joined the brothers for dinner. It was a habit for the six of them to assemble in the dining room once a month for a banquet. As Yui sat at the large table, she wondered why she had to be included, but there had been little room for her to protest when they half-dragged her in here.

A variety of luxurious dishes reminiscent of a high-end restaurant were placed on the table in front of her, but even as she eyed the food, she couldn’t bring herself to eat.

Vampires don’t even need this kind of food, anyway, Yui thought cynically. Her eyes shifted to Ayato, who was sitting next to her. He ate his dinner using a knife and fork with surprising dexterity, behaving in a more refined manner than she had ever seen him. The same was true for Reiji and Subaru, who were sitting across from her.

The saying goes ‘dining together is happy together’ (1), but this family was worlds away from that. A heavy silence had fallen in the room. Shuu, who was sitting right opposite Yui, did not seem hungry either, and simply slumped in his chair with his eyes closed.

I don’t feel like eating. To the brothers, I’m no different from the food that’s on the table right now, anyway… Yui thought, and lost her appetite completely.

“You’re not eating much, Bitchlet,” Laito suddenly said from behind Yui, startling her. “You’ll get anaemia if you don’t eat well, you know? Would you like me to feed you?”

“Laito,” Reiji interjected sternly. “It is rude to get up during dinner.”

“Fiiine. Let’s continue this later, okay?” Laito murmured to Yui, and hummed quietly as he returned to his seat.

The dining room was only quiet for a moment before a loud sound made Yui jolt. It was Shuu, who had pushed back his chair and stood up.

“Shuu…?”

“I can’t be bothered,” the eldest muttered as he walked out of the room.

“That good-for-nothing (2)…” Reiji remarked, his voice tinged with resentment, when Shuu closed the door behind him.

Good-for-nothing? He’s saying that about his own brother?

“Oh, well. That’s what happens to people who’ve been spoiled since birth.”

The Sakamakis don’t seem to care about one another to begin with, but these two really seem to hate each other…

“Teddy, what would you like to eat next?”

Yui looked towards Kanato when she heard his voice. He sat with Teddy on his lap and was trying to feed him.

“Shall we try this banana snowball (3) first?” The purple-haired triplet said as he stabbed the snowball with his fork to pick it up, but it split in half.

Kanato frowned in frustration and began bringing down his fork onto the remnants of the snowball over and over, laughing maniacally. He didn’t stop even when the plate broke with a loud crack.

Reiji appeared fed up with his younger brother’s behaviour, and spoke up. “You all cannot keep yourselves together even at our one banquet of the month… Let us call it here for today.”

Everyone aside from Reiji stood up and left for their rooms immediately.

I should go back to my room, too. Albeit hesitantly, Yui put her hands on the table to push herself up when she was fairly certain she could leave.

“Wait.”

Reiji’s voice brought her to a halt.

“Have you no manners? To place your hands on the table like that… If I ever see you do that again, I will punish you thoroughly. Understood?”

“…Yes.”

His punishment must be pretty severe, judging from what Yui had seen of Reiji’s personality so far. Dejectedly, she returned to her room.

“Ah…”

Yui sighed heavily when she sat down on the edge of her bed. She was glad to have a day off, but it seemed impossible to relax. Come to think of it, I usually helped out Dad on my days off…

Wanting to help her priest father with his work in whatever way she could, Yui usually kept the church clean on the days that she didn’t have school.

It hasn’t even been that long (4)…

Even though she had seen her father only days earlier, her life with him already felt like a thing from the past. Suddenly reminiscing about the days spent with her father, she opened the drawer in the nightstand by her bed and took out her father’s diary. However, the memories that her father had penned down were still nowhere to be found.

“So they really are gone…”

It felt like her own memories with her father had been erased with them. Yui felt herself getting teary-eyed. But why? When I first saw it, it was written right there.

Yui brings me so much joy. The fact that she is not my own child bears no meaning at all. She is truly a blessing, and I am nothing but grateful for every day I get to spend with her.

Her father’s familiar handwriting had spelled it out clearly for Yui to remember. But why had the writing disappeared from the page completely?

The only clue I have is this picture…

Yui quietly stared at the picture of her father and her infant self. The picture alone would not get her anywhere. Besides, I don’t even know what kind of cruel fate awaits me if I try to leave.

Yui sighed again.

Completely at a loss, she slid the picture back between the pages of her father’s diary and returned it to the drawer.

“Whatcha doing?”

Yui shrieked when she looked in the direction of the voice. Ayato was straddling her desk chair in reverse, his elbows propped up on the back of the chair and his chin resting on his hands as he watched her.

“W-why are you…”

“I can do as I please,” Ayato stated, tilting his head to the side ever so slightly. “Hurry up and give me your blood.”

Oh no… I have to hold him off.

“I-I was just about to take a bath.” Yui tried to slip past him, but to no avail. “Huh? Ah!”

Ayato stood up in a flash and threw his arms around her, embracing her from the front. Yui struggled against him when he ran his tongue over the nape of her neck, but his arms soon settled on her waist. It was impossible to run from him.

“Ayato… Please, I’ve been feeling anaemic lately…”

The stress from being in a new environment might have also played a part in it, but since Ayato had taken her blood yesterday, her physical condition had been worsening.

Ayato paid her worries no mind. “Shut up.”

He was clearly toying with her. His tongue found her skin again, licking her as he occasionally made low noises of pleasure. The wet sound of it echoed through the room.

Yui tried to endure it by squeezing her eyes shut, but it inadvertently only made her focus on Ayato more. A small sound escaped her lips at the anticipation of not knowing when his fangs would pierce her skin.

“Feels that good, huh?”

Yui tried to get back, but Ayato wouldn’t budge. “That’s not…”

Just when Yui thought his grip on her waist loosened a little, Ayato bent down to her chest and pressed his lips against her skin. He let out a low moan as he sucked hard. The pain made Yui’s voice slip again, and he finally looked up.

He didn’t… bite me?

Looking down at her chest, Yui did not see blood, but a red mark in the shape of a rose petal on her skin.

“That’s my mark of ownership.”

“N-no…” Yui pushed against his chest to get away, but he only gripped her tighter.

“Don’t move. I’ll give you more.”

Enjoying the feel of her skin, Ayato leisurely moved his tongue to the other side of her chest. He pulled down her sweater to expose her skin further, almost to her most sensitive parts, and began covering it in love bites.

“I want to hurt you more. More, and more…”

“Ah…”

Yui could barely move. She could only try and stand the pain.

When Ayato finally let her go, his red love bites fluttered across her chest like flower petals and clearly marked her as his.

“We’ll continue when you get out of the bath. You’ll only get more anaemic if I feed on you now and that’d just be a bother,” Ayato whispered in Yui’s ear as he embraced her tighter. “Just hurry up. You know what’ll happen if you make me wait too long.”

This time, Ayato let her go. He left the room.

For what felt like the umpteenth time today, Yui sighed heavily. What’s happening to me? Still, no matter how she thought about it, she couldn’ come to an answer.

“In any case, I should take a bath first.”

She knew it was part escapism, but Yui felt that she would lose her sanity completely if she could not do these kinds of normal, human things. Yui grabbed a fresh towel and a clean set of clothes, and headed to the bathroom.

Come to think of it, this is the first time I’m using the bath here.

On the first night, when Yui had only just arrived at the mansion, she had lost consciousness and simply slept for a while, and the next day, she had used the shower room near the pool.

I know it’s foolish to think about, but I can’t help but wonder what kind of bath they have… Daydreaming about her impending bath time, Yui stepped into the bathroom.

It was lavish. Marble covered the floor of the large room in front of her, and a large, white clawfoot tub stood near the back wall. I’ve never been in such a luxurious bathroom before, Yui thought. Even the sink is made of marble. She put her fresh clothes on top of the sink, and her eyes drifted to her reflection in the mirror in front of her.

The marks on her chest were undeniably there. But why would Ayato do this?

Yui had no hopes of running away from the mansion to begin with—the brothers had told her so—and it seemed unnecessary to brand her as his for the world to see.

But still, the throbbing pain of the love bites made her thoughts drift to Ayato even when he wasn’t with her. When she thought of it like that, she realised that the marks must have served Ayato’s intended purpose.

Yui was startled by a sudden splashing sound and she spun around to look at the bathtub. What was that? Is someone there?

Gingerly, she made her way over to the bathtub and saw Shuu, eyes closed and lying fully-clothed in the water. Yui did not know why he was in there with his clothes still on, but he looked like he was trying to drown himself.

“Shuu?!”

Before Yui could reach out to him, Shuu’s languid voice sounded from under her.

“Damn it, don’t yell like that.”

“B-but if you stay in there with your clothes on…”

“Strip them off me, then.”

“What?” Not used to Shuu speaking that way to her, Yui was briefly at a loss for words.

“Didn’t you come in here to see me naked?” Shuu asked, trying to gauge her reaction.

“N-no!” Yui stammered. “Please don’t say such inappropriate things… I came in here to take a bath.”

Shuu’s clear blue eyes watched her face become red, and let out a low laugh as if he enjoyed seeing her flustered. “Would you like to join me?”

“T-there’s no way...”

“Your red cheeks suggest otherwise.”

Realising Shuu was making fun of her, Yui inadvertently shot him a glare, but he simply repositioned his head on the edge of the bathtub with a dissatisfied expression on his face.

“Boring.”

Clearly not intent on getting out of the tub, Shuu closed his eyes again.

Yui’s fear that he might drown dissipated, but even though she felt somewhat relieved, Shuu’s overly sluggish behaviour left her with a complicated feeling. All they’ve done since I came here is manipulate me…

Yui thought of the six brothers’ faces.

So Shuu is the eldest and Reiji is the second son, then the triplets Ayato, Kanato and Laito, and then Subaru is the youngest. But…

“You’re brothers, but why are you all so different?” Yui wondered aloud.

“We’ve got different mothers.”

“What?”

“…Reiji and I have the same mother, and the triplets have a different mother,” Shuu said in a detached voice, his eyes still closed.

“I… see.”

So that’s why they don’t look alike, Yui concluded, but suddenly realised that he had missed one brother.

“What about Subaru?”

“Also got a different mother,” Shuu said, before completely submerging himself in the tub.

“Wha—Shuu!”

In a state of panic, Yui reached out and grabbed both of Shuu’s arms. At the feeling of her hands on his body, his eyes flew open.

The blurry vision of a boy, slightly taller than him, plagued Shu’s mind. When Shuu was younger, the boy always reached out a hand towards him, took him to all sorts of places, and showed him things he had never seen before.

However, the next moment, Shuu’s sight was taken away by a cloud of burning ash. His memories with the boy faded into nothing. That day, Shuu could only stare, dumbfounded, at his friend’s village as it burned to the ground, black smoke rising from its buildings.

“Edgar…”

I couldn’t do anything… My only friend, and I couldn’t do anything to save him.

Everything you love can be taken away from you in the blink of an eye, and never even leave a trace. Just like that boy.

All Shuu was left with was a feeling of powerlessness. All was meaningless.

“Shuu, it hurts…”

Shuu snapped back to attention at Yui’s voice. What did I just…

When he looked at Yui, her face was twisted in pain. Why is she making that face? And… she’s so warm, he thought, slightly confused. As he looked at his hands, he involuntarily reached out and grabbed Yui’s hands tightly. So this is… the body temperature of a human.

Shuu tugged hard at Yui’s arms and pulled her into the bathtub with him, causing her to shriek. Water splashed around them.

The human girl was now soaked to the skin. Her wet clothes made her look thinner (5) than she already did.

Shuu did not know why he did it. He found it difficult to think about anything but the feel of her warm body—the human warmth that he’d gone so long without.

“Let me drink your blood.”

Yui gasped. Fear washed over her face when she looked up at him.

“Hm? Are you scared?” Shuu traced a hand along her neck and pulled it towards him. Perhaps out of fear, Yui squeezed her eyes tightly shut.

Shuu gazed at the porcelain-coloured skin of her exposed neck. “You’re so pale. I wonder how your skin will look when I sink my teeth into you and stain it bright-red with your blood…”

As he spoke, his eyes trailed slowly downwards to her chest. When his gaze fell upon the red marks there, he couldn’t hold back a laugh.

“Ayato. What a control freak.”

“Shuu, I thought you were the only one…” Yui met his gaze even though she was shivering. “I thought you were the only one who’d be different… So why…”

The fatal flaw of humans—they tended to be much too trusting. Shuu felt himself becoming increasingly annoyed at her foolishness. “Let me be clear. I’m a vampire.”

This is too bothersome.

“I’ll show you a whole new world.”

The hand that had been trailing across Yui’s neck, Shuu now used to pull her roughly against him so he could sink his teeth into her shoulder. Yui bit down a shriek.

“Your blood is so warm… I feel like it might burn me.”

Desperately, Yui tried to block out his voice.

“Ah, you’re getting turned on… What a lewd woman you are, running so hot when I bite you.”

“I-It’s not…”

Eagerly gulping down Yui’s blood, Shuu came to a realisation. He raised his face to hers. “…I know now why you’re here. It’s your blood. It’s really something special.”

Blood from the wounds Shuu had inflicted on Yui dripped into the bath, almost as if her body was crying for her.

“Don’t offer your help to me again.”

Yui’s tears of blood quietly disappeared into the water.

A little while after Shuu had left, Yui came out of the bathroom and dragged herself to her room. Memories of what had just happened flashed through her mind.

Shuu actually wasn’t interested in her. That’s why she thought he wouldn’t hurt her, but Yui realised that had been a very naive assumption for her to make.

At the same time, she thought it strange that her blood was ‘something special,’ as Shuu had called it. I don’t think that means I have a rare blood type, Yui thought as she opened the door to her room. She sighed and closed the door behind her.

“You’re late, Pancake.”

Ayato was sitting on her bed.

“I’m thirsty. Hurry up and give me your blood.”

“Ayato, I’m…”

She’d already told him she was feeling anaemic earlier, but Shuu had only just fed from her as well. Yui was certain she would keel over if Ayato took her blood now, and yet the redhead jumped off the bed and stalked towards her.

“You have no right to refuse me.”

Ayato grabbed her from behind and snaked his arms around her waist.

“You’d be better off surrendering to my fangs,” he said as he bent down to her neck to bite her, but he suddenly froze. “Huh?”

On her neck, he found fresh bite marks.

“What’s this?”

“It hurts…” Yui hunched up her shoulders in pain when Ayato ran his fingers over the wounds.

“Reiji? No, Shuu. That motherfucker…”

Ayato grabbed Yui’s hand and forcefully dragged her out of the room.

The two ended up in the gaming room. It had a billiards table, and a rack with cue sticks and a dart board were placed against the wall. When Ayato spotted Shuu lying on the sofa, he strode over and started yelling at him.

“Shuu, you fucker! Are you picking a fight?”

Shuu didn’t respond and his eyes remained closed, which only angered his brother even more.

“Hey, listen to me!”

“Shut up.” Shuu muttered. He clearly did not feel like arguing with Ayato.

Ayato clicked his tongue in response to his brother’s sluggish behaviour. When he looked around the room in anger and his eyes spotted the dart board, he thought of something.

“Let’s play a round of darts!”

“…I can’t be bothered.”

“Like hell you are!”

What should I do? At this rate, they really are going to fight… Just as Yui hesitated whether she should step in to stop them, she suddenly heard someone clapping.

When Yui looked behind her, Laito was leaning against the billiards table, looking at the three of them in amusement.

“How lovely. Our little bitch will be the grand prize!” Laito’s smile deepened when he looked at Yui. “Hehe. This is the best!”

“Grand prize…?” How did it come to this? Yui had a hard time comprehending what was happening.

“You are being way too rowdy.” Having overheard his brothers’ bickering, Reiji now stood near the wall with an irritated look on his face. “Would you care to tell me what is going on?”

“Ayato and Shuu are going to play darts against each other. And what better way to spice things up than a grand prize on the line, right? So, we thought Bitchlet would be the perfect prize.” Laito motioned to Ayato and Shuu to signal that it was their competition.

”Again with the nonsense… If you must, then do it quietly.”

“Okay…”

Yui had hoped Reiji would step in and end the argument, but he hadn’t. Shuu opened his eyes to look at Yui.

“I don’t care about her… so just let me sleep in peace,” Shuu mumbled and closed his eyes again.

Reiji scoffed in response. “I already expected you to say that.”

Reiji? Yui watched as Reiji was staring daggers at his older brother even more than usual.

“You do not even have the guts to accept a challenge. The word ‘coward’ (6) must have truly been invented for this man right here.” Reiji paused for a second, but then continued his tirade. “What a good-for-nothing, useless man.”

Shuu slowly got up at this remark. His sluggish demeanour disappeared completely—his face briefly suggested that he was out for blood—before returning to his usual state. “I’ll do it, Ayato.”

“Well, I wasn’t gonna accept any other answer.”

And so Ayato and Shuu’s battle for Yui began.

The two brothers barely missed their targets when throwing the darts, but somehow, Shuu seemed to come out on top. When Shuu examined the darts he was using, Laito called out.

”Shuu’s next shot could decide the game! If he hits the right mark, our little bitch will become his… How exciting!” Laito sent a sidelong glance to Yui, who stood speechless next to him, as he laughed in amusement.

She quickly looked away. Would it be Shuu or Ayato? Whoever won, Yui had no choice in the matter.

“This is insane,” she muttered. I’m not an object! Yui tried to leave the gaming room, but Laito grabbed her by the shoulder before she could get near the door.

“Oh, my. Our grand prize suddenly started moving on its own!” Laito’s tone of voice was light-hearted, but his unrelenting grip on her shoulder suggested otherwise.

“Let go… It hurts…”

“Hehe.”

Yui glared at Laito even as her face twisted in pain, but he only returned her glare with a shameless grin.

“You’d better look. Shuu’s about to throw, you know.” Laito pointed to his brother, who had just assumed a throwing position and was holding the dart expertly in his hands.

Shuu…

Reiji and Ayato looked on, mildly displeased, as Shuu threw the dart towards the board. It soared through the air in a straight line, perfectly hitting the mark that Shuu had aimed for.

Ayato clicked his tongue in annoyance. Reiji just stared at the board, the winning dart sticking out of it. Shuu, however, sighed in relief that the game was finally over, and turned on his heels and immediately headed for the door.

Shuu? Yui stared after Shuu in confusion.

Laito noticed this, a glint of mischief appearing in his eyes. “And your prize is… Bitchlet!”

He gave Yui a strong push, sending her stumbling towards Shuu with a yelp. The force of it caused her to slam into Shuu’s back.

“I-I’m sorry.” Yui stammered an apology, but Shuu stayed silent, his back still to her. “Um… Shuu?”

He slowly turned around to face Yui, and leaned in to whisper.

“Humans are nothing but prey to me.”

Shuu’s low voice and dangerously glistening eyes as he looked down on her made Yui freeze in place. He grabbed her chin with a hand and tilted her face upward with a rough movement to expose her neck.

Yui flinched.

“You know that, right?” he said as he bent down to her neck. Yui was immobilised by fear. “Don’t bother me anymore.”

With these words, Shuu unceremoniously sank his teeth into her skin. The pain running through her neck sent her spiralling into darkness, and she soon lost consciousness.

1. 食卓 (しょくたく) は団欒 (だんらん): A figure of speech in which 食卓 refers to a dining table, and 団欒 means a ‘happy place,’ or ‘sitting together in a happy circle/harmony,’ thus suggesting that dining together is supposed to be an enjoyable activity to bond with one another.

2. 穀潰 (ごくつぶ) し: Good-for-nothing; deadbeat; parasite; useless person. This is the nickname Reiji often uses for Shuu.

3. スノーボール: A snowball is a kind of chocolate, snowball-shaped and often filled with fresh cream.

4. 懐 (なつ) かしい: Adverb denoting a feeling of nostalgia; looking back fondly on something that happened long ago.

5. 貧相 (ひんそう): Thin (body); poor/seedy-looking. In Diabolik Lovers, the boys usually use this word to refer to Yui’s body as “not much to look at,” especially referring to her lacking in the chest area.

6. 腑抜 (ふぬ) け: Coward; spineless person. Literally someone whose ‘guts have slipped out.’

Translator’s note: I honestly can’t help but get some sort of ‘reverse culture shock’ whenever I go back to one of the earlier drama CD series. :p The boys have been toned down so much in the more recent games and CD series, I’ve honestly forgotten how ruthless they can be. Especially Subaru caught me off guard with some of his statement because he’s just a blushy, tsundere cinnamon roll now lol. I’m not into the super sadistic content, but I can definitely understand why some people are frustrated with the change if they initially got into the franchise for the darker content.

The ground is sharp as you run across it, barefoot. You’re shivering, head frantically looking left and right in anxiety as you drag your body through the halls. This is the farthest you’ve ever gone, farther than you’d let yourself even imagine; a spark of hope emerges in your chest.

And then it’s gone.

Stood before you, staring down at you with that disapproving frown, is Carla.

“You didn’t think I’d let you leave, did you?” His arms are folded, eyes lidded as he looks down at you with an expression that sends a chill across your body. It's too fast for you to move when his hand comes out to slap your face with immense strength, sending you staggering to the ground with a cry. Carla steps forward, his shoe coming to rest on your calf. He presses down, and you wince at the bruising pain as you're trapped below him.

“You know that I do not tolerate disobedience. Must I break your legs in order for you to understand that you cannot leave me?” The pressure becomes a little more painful, before finally dissipating as you watch him step back from your pitiful form

"Stand." He demands, voice deep and powerful with eyes full of scorn. You try, but the fear has left you paralysed, and you freeze half-way, stuck on the floor, beneath him. He watches you for a moment, before reaching down quickly to yank on your arm.

“Now."

His hand holds your arm with a bone-crushing grip.

“You will follow me.”

You're dragged along behind him at a pace that you’re unable to keep up with, feet stumbling with every step as your weight is held up only by the agonising grip he keeps on your arm.

There's no way to tell how long it takes for you to reach the dungeon, a matter of seconds, perhaps hours. But nonetheless, your body finds itself crashing onto familiar stone ground- the impact only adding to the blossomed bruises along your body, no doubt.

“Must you really defy me, every chance you get?”

You're thrown across the bed, your night-dress ripped from your body as Carla holds in his hand something black, and to your horror you come to realise it's a whip.

"You will obey me, Y/N, whether you want to or not. Beg for my forgiveness."

The first crack of the whip against your skin elicits a piercing scream from you. Tears sting your eyes and you immediately begin to beg.

"I'm s-sorry! I'm sorry!" The tears are falling as you cry out, but your words are in vain as you feel the burn of the whip against you once again, and your body convulses violently as you struggle to be free.

"I'm sure you could do better than that." There’s a familiarly sadistic tone to Carla’s voice as a third and fourth laceration hits across your back before you can even open your mouth. The cold air stings the cuts as you feel blood trickling down your back.

You're screaming frantically, blubbering a messy string of words that probably make little sense, in an effort to earn his forgiveness. But the sadist above you continues without mercy, and you feel dizzy from the pressure pounding through your head.

It burns with an unbearable pain as you lay, sobbing. Your voice is cracked and broken and there’s black spots dotting your vision.  It’s too much. You can’t think, you can’t breathe. It’d be so much easier to just give up altogether and-

And then it stops.

You can barely open your eyes to look up and see Carla above you, staring at your face. His golden eyes burn into yours, and you can feel the sweat trickling down your forehead uncomfortably as you struggle to breathe. But this time, he seems confused- with a deep frown as he stares at you- before you realise what his expression truly holds. Concern.

There's a momentary silence, in the cramped room, save for your loud inhales. And then he places the whip down, gloved hand reaching out to grab your chin in a surprisingly gentle grip. His voice is deep and final.

"You are forgiven, Y/N. Do not give me reason to punish you again."

(unpopular opinion) A Defense of Diabolik Lovers: 2

3. “I hate Yui because she’s a pick me and doesn’t defend herself”, aka one of the most common bullshit I see even among the otome fandom. There’s already some nice defenses of Yui but I wanted to throw in my two cents. Before I even begin I’m going to state that this defense is coming from someone who has seen both the games, the show and listened to selective drama CDs. Alright let’s get started. First, she is not weak. As what I mentioned earlier, Diabolik Lovers is a freaking universe full of highly sadistic and insane creatures of the night who doesn’t know anything about being human, no matter how beautiful or gorgeous they looked it would not change that they aren’t human in the first place. Try living in this kind of world for real, let’s see how it’ll turn out because these vampires ain’t like Edward Cullen of Twilight, they’re the most realistic depiction of vampires in terms of personality. Second of all, she is NOT a Mary Sue. Oh come on now you all, it’s damn obvious that most of the fans are jealous because she’s the freaking center of their universe and they are all handsome but that doesn’t make her a SUE! Yui wasn’t aware that she has Cordelia’s heart and I am sure that if given a chance to choose, she would choose not to have that crazy woman’s heart in the first place. And another thing, it never showed in the series that she enjoyed the vampires biting her in fact most of the time she was in pain and forced to be bitten. Third of all, the main reason why she’s very important to the Sakamakis, Mukamis and Tsukinamis is because of her heart–which is technically not hers because it was just implanted. Cordelia is a powerful daughter of the Demon King so her blood is really of the finest quality which now flows in Yui’s veins so…in reality she was actually really nothing but a blood container to them all. Being forced against her will, bitten at the same time without her permission, being yelled or accused and treated like she has no rights are not exactly signs of love and affection. Fourth, she wasn’t useless or spineless. She tried prying them off and say no to them but she was not successful at all, the ending is always the same for her as shown by the start of the series. Throughout the years, especially in the early ones, people have been making fun of Yui for being “meek”, “dumb”, “pick me” and countless more. Granted these people have probably never read, played or watched every DL–related media and have better things to do. Unfortunately, I don’t. I have way too much time and not enough motivation. Because of that, in this following paragraph, I’ll be explaining why Yui survived to the point where she’s gotten and whether or not Cordelia’s heart had a factor in her survival. First off, Cordelia’s heart - Yui’s chances exponentially increased because of her special blood and the circumstances that surround it. Recall in the games and anime that Karl specifically said to the Sakamaki brothers to not kill her off at least not immediately. Note that I said increased. Despite his orders, in HDB and MB, Yui has died in several endings. Meaning even though her blood is a specialty that has been the biggest contributing factor for her surviving the horrors of the DL brothers and one of her biggest defenses, it still isn’t enough to ensure that she lives. Because of this, it has led me to believe that the reason for Yui’s survival isn’t her blood, but rather her personality. Yui’s patience and understanding character is so inhumanly powerful, because it showed that she was willing to give each and every DL boy a chance at redeeming themselves. This is where the ‘air-headed’, ‘dumb’ and other similar comments come into play. Most of these comments target her for being naive, ignorant, gullible and ‘too-trusting’. But I think what they failed to see was that she didn’t have a choice. She knew that there was no way for her to escape the manors, especially since each DL boy has reminded her of that fact in their respective routes. Yet instead of letting this bring her down, she instead chose to be determined

Diabolik Lovers Op Rankings

It’s been a while since I did a ranking for this blog. So, I’m thinking of ranking Diabolik lovers opening(game versions only) This ranking does not include the anime ones. I will rank the music by how good it sounds, and not by how the opening looks. These videos don’t belong to me as it belongs to its rightful owner. Huge thanks to Asyiqin98 Creator.

7. Unlimited Blood (Diabolik Lovers More Blood)

I had to rank this on the bottom of my list, because of personal reasons. First, it was a long intro where there was laughing and the piano in the background. This type of intro is awkward if you listen for the first time. Another reason is that the song is not catchy. It didn’t give a great impression compared to the first game. So the song will sound mediocre.

6. Blood-Sucking Labyrinth (Diabolik Lovers Vandead Carnival)

Another opening that almost is forgettable. I do like it tries to add a new instrument to get that laidback feeling, but the whole saxophone sounds like I’m in a bar or something. It didn’t match the theme of a carnival or gives DL vibes.

5. GuiltyXGuilty (Diabolik Lovers Dark Fate)

Now we’re are getting to the part where the opening will sound like DL. This opening song definitely sound sadistic like midnight pleasure. But if you look at Dark Fate, most of the boys are not that Sadistic except for the Tsukinami. Dark Fate is more drama added with some bit of fluff. So, having this type of opening would be better for the early games.

4. Known Underskin (Diabolik Lovers Lost Eden)

I love songs feature the Sakamaki. It’s my favorite family after all. The opening sounds grand, and it sounds like they are in the middle of a crisis. Every boy is able to sing a part, but I think sometimes they don’t have equal parts to share.

3. Fanatic of Night (Diabolik Lovers Lunatic Parade)

Another opening with the Sakamaki appeared again. I am so happy that they made another. This opening feels upbeat, and makes your body want to move. This type of feeling fit with the whole parade type of thing. I do think the voice actors are having fun with this. Also, my favorite part of the song was that short piano solo that gave out DL vibes.

2. Bad Howling (Diabolik Lovers Chaos Lineage)

Oh no, Subaru is not part of the trio. And is now is replaced by Kou. I am a bit disappointed, but the dynamic still works. The way the guitar makes its way catches the audience's attention. My head is banging with this music. It do like they added off voice to give it a cool effect.

I am going to put this opening on top of my ranking. This song is like a masterpiece to me. First is the catchy melody that appears at the beginning. You just know that this will be a good song. Everything is so catchy, and I think might be one of the reasons why people want to view the game. Add bonus points, if you’re favorite is Shu, Ayato, or Subaru. Then you are here for a good treat. They have their solos, which you can fangirl all the time.

Assuming he would like some time alone, Yui attempts to leave which only infuriates Kanato with misplaced anger. Laito proceeds to punish her using decidedly less childish methods, and mocks her for believing in something that can't physically save her from the evil that is him. Yui accidentally displeases teddy bear-holding Kanato by incorrectly guessing what he wants from her, and he punishes her for her lack of comprehension skills by displacing her school bag, which in turn causes her to displease Laito by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then she learns to her sorrow that she doesn't have a single ally in the entire household. She enters the enormous bathroom to draw a bath for herself only to find Shu listlessly soaking in it, fully clothed. She is temporarily released from her duties as his personal plaything and sippy cup so she may get bathed. Life with the six brothers becomes even stranger as Yui loses her appetite and becomes 'marked' as Ayato's possession. She has a really hard time as Ayato forces her to do everything he wants, even drink her blood. It is the first day of a new high school for Yui, with Ayato and Kanato in same class as her. Unable to escape and with traditional anti-vampire weapons being useless, she becomes lost within the labyrinth of hallways.

Reiji (1:17): Ya de por sí deberías de saber que es complicado hacer chocolates y aún así elegiste hacer unos bastante caros. ¿No estarás sobrestimando demasiado tu habilidad? Ah... No tengo opción *se levanta*. ¿Por qué te quedas allí parada? Tú también ven y ayúdame con los preparativos. Es obvio, ¿no? Prepararé un té que le siente bien a estos chocolates.

Reiji (2:00): Te lo dije, ¿no? Los chocolates que preparaste tienen un impacto muy ligero, por eso recuperaremos el balance del sabor con un té. Vamos, date prisa y trae las tazas. Si me ayudas adecuadamente también te serviré té. Luego de que aprendas que té va mejor con el chocolate deberás de asegurarte de recordarlo. Sí, esta es una ocasión especial para agradecer el que te hayas fijado en mis gustos.

Ayato:  *entra* Así que aquí, estabas. Te estuve buscando pecho plano. Me preguntaba en dónde andabas y estabas en la cocina. ¿Estás preparando la cena? Oh... ¡Oye! ¡Esto es takoyaki! Aunque no sé si contará como un castigo, ya que tú aceptas felizmente todo lo que te doy, jaja. Engañaste al gran Ayato y como castigo... Si lo entiendes, entonces date prisa y prepáralo *vas a cocinar*. Hmph, me diste expectativas y al final eran chocolates. Es obvio que el takoyaki es mucho mejor. Aunque en apariencia son idénticos, solo que saben demasiado dulces *come*. Como pensé, son dulces. Pero no están nada mal.

Laito: *tocas la puerta y entras* ¿Eh? Bitch-chan, es raro que seas tú la que venga. ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Eh? ¿Vas a darme chocolates? No estoy enojado, solo me llamó la atención porque desde anoche que lo sentía y ahora que conozco su origen finalmente puedo entender el porqué. ¿Pensaste que no me había percatado? No hay nada que yo no conozca de ti. Sería mejor que reconozcas que no puedes guardarme secretos. Si no lo haces, entonces tendré que volver a adiestrarte hasta que lo entiendas.

Ruki (1:04): Hmph, bueno, te perdonaré por esta vez. Abriré esta caja *come*. Son unos chocolates bastante dulces. No, está bien, no necesito café, ya que estoy acostumbrado a las cosas dulces. Más importante *te atrae hacia él*. Esto es algo que llevas preparando para mí desde ayer, ¿no? Entonces tengo que darte una recompensa, ya que eso es lo que hace un buen amo. Just like any other poor thing that bumps into him, when you meet him it’s already too late. Unlike his brothers, he hates the chase. He hates pray that fights back. Your porcelain skin is too perfect to taint in anyways of brutality. His preferred method is draining you of blood. Your bIood drained skin would portray such a pretty color in his collection.

Laito

Laito finds himself grow restless and bored days after each number. He likes to roam the streets at nights, hiding around night clubs, parties, churches until he finds the perfect pretty little thing to take home only to toy with. Appearance doesn’t matter to him, but he does tend to keep his eyes out for the naïve, innocent, defenseless looking.

The classic charm and seduce trick to get anyone trusting enough to follow you anywhere. His eyes almost hypnotic, anything he says could bring you to your knees. When he has you all alone, first drawing blood to get a taste, gauging the sweetness, before he gives you what else is in store for you. Ruining what you once thought of innocence, he’s rough and sadistic.

If do see through his act before it’s too late, he doesn’t mind. After all, he enjoys the chase. He likes to see the hope leave your eyes as you realize the running is futile, it always ends in bIood.

In this blog, 𝐊𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐦𝐢 is shipped to 𝐊𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐦𝐢 and they are not related by blood despite belonging in the same household. They have their very own history and route of story entitled as ‘Diabolik Lovers Forbidden Fruit (DLFF)’ in which Kou is the main MC of the story, thus the following series that involved this pair is marked specifically as ‘the idol’s story’ given only if the route is focused in their point of view.

Otherwise, they will only be viewed as pure best friends in the brotherly hood of the Mukami household.

Where their relationship is really low-key in open display, such like the bonds of the Tsukinami close siblings, Shin and Carla. In the public of DL world, they are known being best friends of each other, where wherever Kou is, Kuron will be beside him (openly unromantically). They are usually seen working in a pair, be it capturing or threatening a prey which they caught, or just casually doing something in the background, but supposedly no one knows about the truth of them being lovers in actuality. (So don't be alarmed if Kuron denies the fact that they are together)

In the Mukami mansion, they are known as the main idols of the family, both being stars of the country, being just as famous and attractive looking. Framed as trademarked stage alias being ‘Mr Sadistic Cat’ and ‘Dazzling Pink Idol’. Thereby with a side group title being ‘The Shining Idols’

In reality however behind closed doors, they are lovers of the violent, complicated and realistic kind, such will only be disclosed if it's a private scenario asked. (So do be warned they are not meant to be judged or predicted as lovey dovetail sort of couple, it's two domineering Do-S men, what do you expect?)

Oh boy so this is gonna make people really mad. I have listened to a total of 52 songs from the Diabolik Lovers franchise (that I could find) and ranked them for the hell of it. For this ranking I will be including all character songs, openings (both anime and game) along with the remixes. I will not be counting solo versions of songs (eg. Gin no bara), soundtrack bgm or the endings themes.

My ranking is based on these things:

how well does the song fit the character/s or game, both in lyrics and aesthetic

the overall production and performance of the song

is the song a bop? would I willingly listen to it again?

Couple of disclaimers: I do not speak Japanese so I will be crediting the translations of each song as I go through them along with any think pieces / essays that I come across. These are the songs I will probably never listen to again. I have a few gripes with them that I'll talk about in my explanation.

This song is just super underwhelming overall. The guitar is my favourite thing about the song but that's it. There is so much build up for a boring chorus. The lyrics don't have much for me either.

51. 血戦のDies irae (Kessen no Dies irae)

On the opposite end, this song is so overwhelming. There are so many elements to follow and its hard to keep up. This is the first time I'll bring it up but the volume of the voices is so quiet compared to the backing track, its frustrating. The lyrics is what brings it up a notch as it talks about the day of wrath (dies irae) as the day the founders take over. I was also low key hoping to hear some version of the dies irae song hidden in the background but I couldn't hear any.

This song just feels so forgettable, I just feel like there isn't much to comment on. There are some interesting lyrics sprinkled out like comparing literal self mutilation to abstinence. Also the actual delivery of 'S ah O ah S ah', I can't take it seriously.

This had an interesting start because I hadn't heard anything similar for DL but then after a few lines the tone change was just a nope for me. Again, Kino's voice is super quiet and the constant barrage of all these instruments that don't really gel together its confusing. Overall, it didn't leave much of an impression and I couldn't really visualised DL in the song.

48. 吸愛ラビリンス (Kyūai Labyrinth)

Praise for the saxophone! Props to that because it shines here and is really the only memorable thing besides that final line of the chorus. The song does give the vibe of the Vandead Carnival with its more playful energy though. The lyrics feel really typical, like there are so many times I read lyrics about drinking blood before I get bored.

First off please never let me see Subaru near a fedora again thanks. Overall I felt bored with this song, like its nice, but that it. There are similar sounding songs that just hit home similar themes a lot stronger later on. The best part of this song is the spoken word but it feels weird for Subaru to be singing such a slow song.

Again, the voices are super quiet and with how fast paced the instrumentals are its annoying. The tempo also backfires because these are two of the more 'chill' characters. The last complaint is that the speed of Ruki's speaking compared to Azusa's singing just isn't right.

This has to be my least favourite opening to a song, the staccato is just really grating to me. The way I'd describe the chorus is loud, the same note over and over again isn't appealing. The lyrics are an interesting read but nothing feels super important. The highlight of the song is the pre-chorus, thanks production!

One the best part of the original is that opening section with the steps, it creates some nice anticipation for the coming song. The chorus this time round feels a little low energy after the hype of the pre-chorus. After watching the actual opening with the remix, I kind of wish they had the voice over, the song is so chill the last chorus could have it to make it feel more grandiose.

Second generic rock song, this time it actually suits Subaru's brand! The lyrics do have some hints to Subaru as a character which is better. My sustaining thought is that this sounds like an off brand Arcadia.

39. Bloody★Mayim★Mayim

This has to have one of the strongest hooks for DL. For how many people sing in the song, it's easy to keep track of and the chemistry between them all is in sync. The main issue is that it feels like its missing some element to make it shine, the lyrics aren't in-depth too which brings it down another peg. The bridge/interlude is the best part though as I can visualise some mini story within the song here.

38. ADDICTED (2) PHANTOM

This song would be so much higher if I felt like it was more memorable cuz the lyrics here really shine. My interpretation is that this is Ayato questioning where his love stops and his sadistic nature to satiate his desires begin, can he separate the two? He both loves and despises the idea of draining his s/o dry. Another gripe with the song is that its not quite Ayato's aesthetic sonically.

37. Kindan no 666 (Three Six)

Kou & Azusa

What puts this song so low is the majority of the instrumental, it takes a backseat here when I feel there could be more added. Props to percussion, drums are great though. After watching the MB opening so many times its hard to not see DL. Lyrics match with this one line here describing Kou in a nutshell:

"Sin spread from mouth to mouth, saying 'I’ll be gentle' pulls the trigger on a casual disaster!"

36. Iolite (アイオライト )

I don't know why the producers associate electro-pop with Shu, I can't really see it much. I think they should have gone full glitch-pop instead considering how the song does a deep dive into his mind and thought process. Again, I think the voice is also quiet here but the instrumentals have some great moments, especially the strings.

Well this gives Sakamaki vibes, nice guitar! Again, I like how it isn't overwhelming despite the amount of people involved. Lyrics aren't super impactful but super catchy.

34. 冷たい血 (Tsumetai Chi)

You have to read the lyrics while reading this, please! Its surprisingly wholesome and emotional overall. Again, there is the issue of the voice being way to quiet as the instrumentals swallow him whole after the second clock tick. The delivery is really well timed and production does a great job adding elements that works with the lyrics. There is a subtle echo to the voice that feels super enchanting as he comes to terms with the fact that he has fallen in love. Biggest drawback obviously is that this is just spoken word.

33. KISS♥MARK

This song delves into the more perverse side of Shu, but we haven't really reached the level of Laito (we'll get there). The phone feels a little out of character but it suits that narrative. The straight cut out of music for the intermission was a bit abrasive but the transition back to music makes me forget about that with how slick it is. At least its better than a generic rock song.

32. カモフラージュ (Camouflage)

What a great match up for subject matter, my interpretation is a denial and inability to accept oneself, ultimately using a mask to hide. So please look up the lyrics for some gems. However, after the 'against the blood' nothing really hit that same point sonically, furthermore its not the most aesthetically fitting for the two characters.

Well time to party, talk about a bop and a half! Its just so fun, even though its to exactly DL to me, but that's Lunatic Parade for you. Shout out to the guitarist and percussion once again.

29. Bad Howling

This is super catchy, its nice to hear Kou in the opening song this time round, it spices things up. Theres some really nice elements played with the vocals as they sing over one another that is really well balanced. The biggest peg down is that I don't get super DL vibes and the lyrics aren't the deepest.

28. I.M.I.T.A.T.I.O.N. G.A.M.E

Overall this song is a little generic and doesn't sound like DL but! There is a lot to love here too. Starting off with the performance, I really like the vibrato in his voice and the decent of notes at the end of the chorus is just, yes. It a nice hook and the lyrics are pretty good too. My only other complaint is that the drums mask some smaller elements in the background of the song which would have been nice to hear more in the forefront.

27. 極限(UNLIMITED) BLOOD

This is where the rankings get pretty hard cuz I wish this was higher but oh well. the dramatic shift from the opening piano to the song is so abrupt but it gets you pumped. The intermission does a good job of changing things up without cutting tension. The lyrics themselves seem to be from the view of the Adam project during more blood and the unquenchable thirst they get in the story.

26. アルカディア (Arcadia)

Immediately I get Ayato vibes from this song and the rapping does help too with a nice flow that isn't too jarring from the rest of the song. These lyrics are basically Addicted2Phantom on steroids, I can't see anyone else other than Ayato in them.

25. Kekkyoku Night

Don't know why but the guitar melody just seems like I had heard it before but I can't put my finger on it. The bass is super slick here and I really enjoy it. The vocal distortion at the start of the verse sets a scene for him to hunt down this person and its a narrative choice. The main issue is that I wish there was a little more pizzaz to the chorus.

24. Kaikan DEATH-TRUCTION

Spoilers but I have placed both a Kanato's songs pretty high up so this was a little bit of a let down after the other two. The main issues here is that I don't really get too much of Kanato in the song and the yelling before the chorus is a little much. This, to me, is a self reflection from Kanato which is a good switch up from his last two songs. Overall, the song is abrasive in a good way that isn't overwhelming and the 8-bit section is my fave.

23. 血濡れた密会 (BLOODY SABBATH)

Oh boy, look these lyrics up for a good time. This song is about his hook up with a women with the song getting progressively darker as it goes on. Nice psycho reference but I don't know if it does much in the end. Really catchy hook and the escalation of the final chorus is just so good. Also I'm just going to leave this line from the song here:

“You wend all out with the rodeo girl play? So then, let’s grind!!!”

22. 幻日理論-Parhelion Logic

This song is meant to be kind of an open letter to Cordelia and my word these lyrics are haunting. It fits the vibe of Haunted Dark Bridal so well, super strong overall. I just wish there was a stronger performance vocally.

21. 暴言シンドローム (Seiron Syndrome)

Yuma, to me has some pretty good observation skills and its really highlighted here. The first line just hits the nail on the head in terms of how rough he is both in and out of the bedroom. This song is the best of the 'generic rock' with production being really smooth despite the high energy, it matches him really well. First line:

20. 蠱惑のParade (Kowaku no Parade)

We got another catchy banger here! This song just screams 'the two of us are here to hunt you down and we won't stop till we get a taste.' I mean this song is super pleasing aesthetically and great lyrics to boot!

The strings are an immediate attention grabber and its hold it throughout the whole song. Super catchy, and these lyrics are Azusa, especially this chorus. Id be interested to hear what people think about the second verse in particular cuz there's a lot to read into:

18. SQueeze…

Okay before anything else, the squeeze at the start is goofy, I can't take it seriously. Anyway, I can't help but tap my foot to this song. Third times the charm, finally hitting Subaru's aesthetic to a T. The voice is a little quiet on the track but what takes over just sounds so good. The contrast of the bell and the guitar is just, yes thank you. The pre-chorus is a nice mix up to the status quo and these lyrics are great too.

17. 愛の檻 (Ai no Ori)

The opening is a nice tone setter for a haunting head bopper. These voices work together so well, just like how the sirens work with the strings. The singular violin during the bridge is great, praise to anyone who can do that my god. The string motif climaxes at the final chorus and it creates an awesome song!

Well we have a nice build up ballad here. The opening is a little out of place but I forget about it as it builds to this final chorus with the tempo getting faster and faster. The stripped back production also ends up aiding the song in the end with its punches and message. Speaking of which; I get the idea this is about watching some either currently or in retrospective how their personality changes after turning into a vampire; a loss of innocence. How fitting for the Mukami's.

This is what I think the best of the best is. It reflects the themes, ideas and characters of Diabolik Lovers in the best way possible. When people ask me what music from the franchise to listen to, I point to these songs.

There is so much to talk about here, this is a mix of singing and spoken piece and it works so well for me. The delivery over this contagious beat I can't help but get hints of a k-pop vibe here. The movement to singing then vocoded voice are interesting and fun. The bridge switch up too is great, my only wish is that the choir hand a little more presence in the final chorus cuz its fun the first times round, it would be a nice call back.

14. A Certain Prophet's Fate [とある預言者の、運命 Toaru Yogensha no Unmei]

I can visualise a Nutella Kookie moodboard with this opening alone. To me, this is Reiji explain his views on women with allusions to Faust too, not the Ikemen version relax. there are some cool allusions to his mother in the lyrics too. The bass is so cool to listen out for and the guitar nodding to the chorus at the end is a nice way to end. I was just hoping for a little continuation to the opening like Reiji finding this person escaping on horseback.

13. CHAOS☆PARTY

Aaaaaand another innuendo song from Laito, what a surprise! The jazzy, circus-pop vibes are super fun and catchy, I love it. It's like an upgraded version of Bloody Sabbath to me. The distortion on the guitar is also great to listen out for.

The opening may be cliche but it works so well, this is such a deep dive into Reiji's psyche; his mother, inferiority complex and village burning to name a few. The actual song is easy to remember which makes it even better here, the descending notes at the end of the chorus is a highlight.

The song to start it all, thank god it's such a highlight. I get so hyped from hearing the opening footsteps; mirroring the prologue with You stepping into the mansion for the first time. I feel so nostalgic for this and I'm hyped to play the game every time I hear this. The spoken section is the high point in terms of the HDB aesthetic but these lyrics maaaannn:

"With a scream that shatters the moon itself I’ll give you this extraordinary pain called “love”!"

10. Guilty×Guilty!!!

I'm gonna get crucified for putting this above midnight pleasure but my list and this is my fave game op. The only peg down is the lyrics but it makes up so much for the actual sound variation. The unnerving energy from this scifi-y noise, it screams danger with the Tsunami arrival. The variation between the two verses in robs what places it high and the bridge is excellent to boot.

9. Farewell Song

If I had to make one song recommendation outside of DL with this list it is this song here. The lyrics and melody match up the same way and both are strong in their own right. Onto the song, these lyrics really shine wrangling with ideas and the thought process of depression; something that hits close to home for me. With the inclusion of the destructive nature vampires its truely impactful. The sound of the song aids these lyrics too while all sounding like Shu.

Without pause, the drops of a drizzle had begun to weep...

8. Mr.SADISTIC NIGHT

This is my favourite opening of all the games and anime and it is the most on theme with the DL franchise, not just the one game. The guitar rifts at the start are just sooooo iconic. The actual line "Mr Sadistic Night" is delivered so well too. I mean the song speaks for itself. I will make the observation though that this song is the epitome of kids unknowingly singing a song with dirty lyrics.

"If I’m so aroused by the snare of your enticing blood

Tonight, as I thrust deep into you, a lust for death awakens from within you!"

7. 悪魔的（Devil's）Spire!!!!

Kou

This song is just Kou at his best, I can imagine him singing this at a concert as a debut single. It has all the elements of a catchy pop song with some sinister elements that just reflects his personality. Production has my praise here too. The song seems to be a friends with benefits situation Kou has as he recounts the tale. Also, more innuendos:

"In the deep red velvet sheets, Do you want to taste my forbidden syrup?"

6. Operation X

Haven't seen these guys in a while! You can tell production had fun adding all these medical sounds in the back like the sirens and heart monitor. The song itself is super catchy too, that bass just hits you at the core! The lyrics look like the Tsukinami's observation of You as she has become entangled with all these vampires and the situation just seems to spiral even more out of control.

"The risk spreads further the deeper you get involved...

...The more you give up, the more that guy mocks you"

5. GRATEFUL★DEAD★MARCH

Production had fun again, you can tell. It's more upbeat there is still a sinister vibe here. The constant switch ups within the song all flow so well. I feel genuine despair listening to this chorus, like Kanato is mocking or toying with me before going in for the kill. My only complaint is that the slowing down at the end is a bit of a mood killer.

4. 切断★舞踏会 (KIRISAKI CARNIVAL)

In terms of character aesthetic, this is sheer perfection. There is a narrative within this song that you need to look at the lyrics for the best experience. The sound effects act as a good way to heighten the story as they match the lyrics. One moment to note it both the chorus and pre-chorus as they act as the extreme ends on Kanato's personality and it creates a great dichotomy when placed together.

3. Q.E.D.

My favourite solo song, and the one I constantly visit the most. Laito is a complex character and this song does a self reflection in the best way possible.I would also recommend reading this great analysis by everything laito because I can't do a proper analysis justice. For the song itself, the piano is a great mood setter as it acts as if we are approaching Laito as he plays the piano about to go into one of his many monologues to himself. The intercut from the piano to the guitar is abrupt but it works so well as if there are crack in his facade showing through. The change back to the piano is great too and isn't distracting in any way. I also think this is such an emotional performance, like I can feel the sadness and despair along with almost a self deprecating humour to the delivery. Top notch stuff

2. 罠-If You’re Diablo- (Wana -If You’re Diablo-)

I want mention first off that the spoken word from Ruki is such an aid here, the pace is slower, more haunting and despair-inducing in tone. The speaking adds a nice break to the vocals. The chorus in particular packs such a punch its kind of nice to lie on the ground and just let the song envelop you. The lyrics give the impression that there is a mutually destructive relationship here with the Mukami's mentioning of betrayal yet they suck the blood of this person. There is also a feeling of hopelessness that the Mukami's know they can never achieve their goal of becoming Adam.

"I'd been resigned to become Adam since who-knows-when...

I continue to hate this fate, my prayers in zero"

And we're finally at the end! This song encapsulates everything that Diabolik Lovers is. Vocally, it's really catchy with such a somber vibe, because that's what DL is. It's a dark series but you can see that darkness with each backstory, the actions these characters take and just the overall hopelessness in this one song. The Sakamaki's all singing together packs such a punch too. There are so many gems in these lyrics, to literally acknowledging the pain and suffering their mothers' caused and coming to terms with the actions they have committed as they fall in love.

"The proof remains on your neck while you sleep quietly Even if an eternal curse awaits me beyond those overflowing tears

I now hold this love and pain in my chest"

My DL Drama CD Collection + Recommendations

At this point in time the Diabolik Lovers series has a huge number of drama CDs and I thought it might be nice to talk about which ones I’d recommend for anyone who wants to get into the CDs but isn’t sure where to start. I’ve included a list of all of the CDs I own under the cut, so you can see exactly which volumes I’m referencing and if you spot a volume that you’re interested in and want to know more about then feel free to send me a message :)

Recommendations:

Rather than recommending random drama CD volumes, I’ve selected drama CD series that I would recommend based on what you’re looking for (and from there you can pick out the volumes of your favourite character(s)): 

Darker content -> The original Do-S bloodsucking CDs, the original Versus CDs, the More, Blood CDs and the Versus II Carla versus Shin volume. (One thing that’s worth noting is that in the original Do-S CDs, the dummyhead mic is only heavily utilized in the final ~15 minutes of the CD, whereas this isn’t the case for the versus or More, Blood CDs so if that’s important to you then this might be something to take into consideration).

Romance -> The Bloody Bouquet, Para-Selene or Born To Die CDs are going to be the best choice if you want something romantic. The Born To Die CDs are definitely the best if you’re just looking for fluff, but they are only available for the Tsukinamis and Kino (and to my knowledge none of them have English translations). As for Bloody Bouquet and Para-Selene, given that Bloody-Bouquet is themed around marriage, it’s a bit more romantic than Para-Selene but if you have the time/money then I’d recommend checking them both out.

Action/plot -> The Zero CDs. Because these CDs feature an actual enemy (the portrait version of the boys) they contain much more action than most of the other CDs. The versus CDs also have this to some extent but are much more open-ended and geared towards fan-service, while the Zero CDs have a self-contained story, with a satisfying conclusion.

Comedy -> Any bonus CD featuring multiple characters with the exception of the Chaos Lineage preorder bonus CD (which acts as more of a prequel to the game). In general bonus CDs with more than one character tend be very funny, and although I don’t own too many, my personal favourite is the Lost Eden bonus CD in which you and the boys hunt around the Sakamaki mansion for your and Azusa’s missing socks ( 「靴下を探してin逆巻家～開けてはならないパンドラボックス～」).

In addition: - If you’re completely open to new suggestions, then allow me to humbly recommend Shin’s Para-Selene CD, as besides Shin being my bias, I think this is a really well written CD and does a really good job of summing up Shin’s personality (in fact I would definitely recommend it if you’re trying to get to grips with writing him). - On the subject of writing, if you aren’t particularly confident with the Tsukinami brothers (but want to be) then I would heavily recommend the Versus II Carla versus Shin CD and the Dark Fate vol.1 CD as these a really good reference for writing the brothers interacting with an OC/Yui/a reader prior to any sort of emotional attachment. - If you own Chaos Lineage (the game), unless you’re out to collect all of your favorite boys CDs, I wouldn’t recommend getting the Chaos Lineage CDs, as I wouldn’t say they have any advantage over the game. - I also would not recommend the Lost Eden CDs if you own the game for the same reason (although I haven’t listened to Kino’s volume, which may be of interest to Kino fans). - The Another Story CD from the More, More Blood deluxe edition acts as a companion to the main More, More Blood CD (so Shin’s essentially acts as an epilogue), meaning that if you want the complete story of More, More Blood (and can afford it) then I would recommend getting the deluxe edition over the normal edition, but it is significantly more expensive. - The bonus CDs containing only one character that I own have all been good, so I’d recommend getting a hold of your favourite character’s if you can, however they’re a bit harder to come by than most of the other CDs and they’re normally only about 10 minutes. -The Sadistic Song CDs are all good, but they only feature a song, an off-vocal version of the song and a 9-14 minute mini-drama track for the price of a full drama CD (which is normally anywhere from between 45-70 minutes), meaning they maybe aren’t the best value for money unless you can find them for lower than the RRP.
