A little bit about this project:

The Psych Survivor Archive is an abolitionist organization deeply invested in mad liberation and cross-movement organizing.

We host two projects: the Psych Survivor Zine and the Digital Story Archive. The Psych Survivor Zine celebrates Mad art in volumes released twice a year, with thematic prompts for each edition. The Digital Story Archive is a more informal forum for psych survivors to write about our lives and share as much as we want, when we want, how we want. 

Through this archive, I hope to create a platform where psych survivors are believed and the psych system is held accountable for the ways it has harmed us. Our pain, resistance, knowledge, and grief are worth listening to, and I offer up this archive as a communal method of bearing witness. 

This space is for the imperfect crazy person, the noncompliant patient, those of us who trash our rooms in the psych ward and yell to ourselves on the street. This space is for our comrades still incarcerated in all kinds of institutions and prisons. An air raid alert has just started when Victoria Itskovych joins a Zoom call from Kyiv. “It’s, like, a usual situation,” she says. “But really, it’s not usual.” February 24 will mark the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. For nearly two years now, Kyiv has been under bombardment. Some weeks, people have to trudge to their shelters night after night, checking text alerts and Telegram channels to figure out where the missiles are falling and when it’s safe to come out—although, it’s never really safe.

That relentless stress, and the trauma of losing family, friends, and colleagues on the front, has taken its toll. A poll by the city government last year found that 80 percent of residents reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has exposed the whole of Ukrainian society to battle shock. “We’ve all suffered from this,” says Itskovych, who is director of the Kyiv City Council’s IT department. “Almost every person has somebody who was injured or died during the war, or lost their home or lost their health.”

In the face of such widespread injury, the Kyiv government has turned to Ukraine’s now-famous civic tech infrastructure for help. As the war enters its third year, the municipal government is starting to build a citywide system for providing mental health support to citizens. It’s a vast challenge, but also a unique opportunity—the first time that such a mass-trauma event has happened to a society that has already built the tools of digital government. Dealing with the mental health impacts of the invasion will be absolutely vital to keep society resilient, functioning, and committed enough to repel the invaders. And they’ve collected a lot of data, which is how the Kyiv government has been able to measure the scale of the city’s distress—and people’s reluctance to seek help. Of the 80 percent of residents who show signs of trauma, “40 to 45 percent are afraid to have contact with doctors who can help,” Polovynko says.

But this is only half of the problem that needs solving. For those who do want to seek treatment, there simply aren’t enough resources to help them. Clinical psychologists are supposed to limit the number of patient consultations they do in a day, so they don’t burn out. Before the full-scale invasion, Inna Davydenko saw a maximum of four patients daily. Today, Davydenko, a mental health specialist at the City Center of Neurorehabilitation in Kyiv, sees twice that number. When we speak, she’s just finished a video call with a soldier stationed near the front, whom she’s helping cope with stress and anxiety.

Even before the war massively increased the number of people dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety, Ukraine’s medical system suffered from an underinvestment in mental health provision. “In most hospitals, you have maybe one psychologist. In good hospitals, it’s maybe two,” Davydenko says. “A lot of people need psychological help, but we can’t cover everything.” There is simply no way that the current system can grow to match the enormous jump in demand. But, Davydenko says, “almost every Ukrainian person has a smartphone.”

This is exactly what Polovynko and Itskovych want to exploit, using Kyiv Digital’s platforms and data to digitize mental health support for the city, and so close the gap between need and resources. Their project will focus first on those they’ve identified as being most vulnerable—war veterans and children—and those most able to help others: teachers and parents. The next six months of the project will be a “discovery stage,” Polovynko says. “We need to understand the real life of our veterans now, of the children, of the parents, what’s their context, how they survive, what services they use.”

The project will track people through the process of recovering from trauma, monitoring the treatments they ask for and the ones they receive, their concerns as they move through the mental health system, and their outcomes. Once the team has a detailed map of services and bottlenecks, and data on what’s working and what’s not, they can match individual needs with treatments. A full roll-out is scheduled for early 2025.

“It doesn't mean that the whole chain of the service will be absolutely digital,” Itskovych says. Some patients may be directed to group therapy or one-on-one meetings with psychologists, others will be given access to online tools. The aim, she says, is to create efficiency, to close the service gap, but also to provide comfort, meeting people where they are. “For a big part of our clients, there is more comfort with getting the service online, in different ways. Some people are not comfortable meeting a specialist one-on-one; they prefer a digital way to get the service.”

The project is being supported financially and operationally by Bloomberg Philanthropies, a charitable organization created by former New York mayor and Bloomberg founder Michael Bloomberg. James Anderson, head of government innovation at the organization, says that the project comes at a critical time for Kyiv, where people continue to suffer even though global attention has shifted away to other crises.

“There's always a tremendous amount of attention when the immediate crisis hits,” Anderson says. “But mayors continue to have to deal with the human costs of crises, long after the newspapers have turned to new subjects. That’s certainly what we sense and see in Kyiv.”

The size of the challenge in Kyiv is clearly daunting. But, Anderson says, there are reasons for optimism. Cities have got better over the past two decades at responding to common crises, such as Covid-19, which also required rapid, mass digitization of services. “Every crisis is distinct and different, and awful, in its own way,” Anderson says, “but there are lessons learned.” The Kyiv government, and Ukrainian society more widely, have demonstrated a capacity for rapid innovation to meet urgent needs, and Anderson hopes that success in this project could see it replicated internationally. “This is not the last war. This is not the last crisis,” he says. “I think Kyiv has lessons that they can share with cities around the globe.”

For Kyiv, and Ukraine, the crisis won’t end when the war does. “Psychological health is the number one problem for Ukraine,” Davydenko says, before correcting herself. “Number one is Russia, number two is our psychological health,” she says. “PTSD is our future.”

Racist pseudo-science is making a comeback thanks to Elon Musk. Recently, the tech billionaire has been retweeting prominent race scientist adherents on his platform X (formally known as Twitter), spreading misinformation about racial minorities’ intelligence and physiology to his audience of 176.3 million followers—a dynamic my colleague Garrison Hayes analyzes in his latest video for Mother Jones. X, and before it Twitter, has a long-held reputation for being a breeding ground for white supremacy. [ ... ] Musk is amplifying users who will incorporate cherry-picked data and misleading graphs into their argument as to why people of European descent are biologically superior, showing how fringe accounts, like user @eyeslasho, experience a drastic jump in followers after Musk shares their tweets. The @eyeslasho account has even thanked Musk for raising “awareness” in a thread last year. (Neither @eyeslasho nor Musk, via X, responded to Garrison’s request for an interview.) “People are almost more susceptible to simpler charts with race and IQ than they are to the really complicated stuff,” Will Stancil, a lawyer and research fellow at the Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity, told Garrison in a video interview. He added: “This is the most basic statistical error in the book: Correlation does not equal causation.”

Racist pseudo-science simply sprays cologne on the smelly bullshit of plain old irrational bigotry. Warped theology, which was used to justify slavery, passed the baton of officially sanctioned race prejudice to pseudo-science in the late 19th and early 20th century.

DNA and other real science not only undermine the pseudo-science of racism but has revealed that "race" is not even a valid scientific concept among humans. What is widely regarded as race is defined by rather generalized phenotypes.

There has always been petty bigotry. But racial pseudo-science has been used to justify exploitation, colonialism, and territorial expansion by the powerful and ignorant. Elon Musk certainly qualifies as both powerful and ignorant.

In 2022, just one week after Musk purchased Twitter, the Center for Countering Digital Hate —an online civil rights group— found that racial slurs against Black people had increased three times the year’s average, with homophobic and transphobic epithets also seeing a significant uptick, according to the Associated Press. More than a year later, Musk made headlines once again for tweeting racist dog whistles in a potential attempt to “woo” a recently fired Tucker Carlson. But, his new shift into sharing tech-bro-friendly bigotry carries its own unique set of consequences.

If you are still on Twitter/X then you are indirectly supporting the propagation of pseudo-scientific racism – as well as just plain hate. Like quitting alcohol and tobacco, ditching Twitter/X can be difficult. But after doing so, you'll eventually notice how much better you feel.

"Well aren't you just the prettiest young thing. Does your mommy know you're here, sweetie?"

The sultry voice was oddly out of place, here under the fluorescent, sterile gleam of examination-room lights. At the sound, Judy – the willowy blonde nurse to whom those words were addressed – flushed. Her fingers tightened imperceptibly on the clipboard as she drew herself up to the full, impressive height of her five whole feet. And as she turned her grey eyes over to the buxom, orange-jumpsuited woman who had addressed her, a note of hesitation entered her voice.

"I- You… You shouldn't talk to me like that." The pen in Judy's hand trembled… wavered… trembled again. "I'm just- just here to give you your annual physical. That's it, Miss… um, Miss…"

"Aww, does this cute little nurse not even know how to read?" A glint of amusement sparkled in the prisoner's eyes. She lifted her manacled wrists to gesture at the name stitched onto the straining fabric around her bosom – and as she did so, a wry chuckle escaped her lips. "It's Farnham, by the way. Gloria Farnham. But you don't really care about that, do you?"

Nurse Judy opened her mouth to protest, but her seated patient smoothly spoke her into silence. "Of course not. You're just here to do your job, of course. Do what they tell you. Try your very, very hardest not to mess up. Because that's the only way an adorable little nurse who's just getting started will ever get ahead, isn't it? Isn't it, sweetie?"

The blush was glowing now in Judy's cheeks – crimson against the white of her uniform. "Ah, well- I mean- yes? Procedure- it- it's very important I do everything just right-" "And I'm sure you are doing it all – so adorably well," murmured her patient, whose gleaming eyes were following every tic of emotion on the nurse's face. Farnham may have been the inmate, but there was nothing remotely submissive about her. Her entire aura reeked of power, of confidence, of… control. And against that, poor insecure Judy was quickly finding it a very tough time indeed.

Maybe the comforting solidity of routine could help. "I'll, um- I'll need… your height? I- you should- um, stand, please…"

But it was as if the patient could read her very thoughts. Farnham had already risen and was standing, with an unperturbed smile, against the measuring tape. "Oh-! You- you already did–" Judy faltered out meekly. "Oh, never mind-"

Down went that figure, recorded by Judy's shaky digits. She took a hasty breath while her patient slid smoothly back down onto the examination table. Then, her fingers discarded the clipboard, reaching as if for reassurance for her stethoscope. "I- um, I'm going to need to check your, um… breathing? You- you know- tuberculosis is a real, erm, problem-"

"Oh, check out my chest all you like, nurse," purred her patient, thrusting out her womanly bosom in evident amusement. "Go on, sweetie! You can't be more than what… twenty-one? Twenty-two? And I bet you've never even touched a woman like this." She bit back a smile as the nurse's gloved hands approached, trembling with sudden violence. "You know you want to, sweetie. Go on… touch them…"

"Ah- no- no that's not-" But Judy's fingers were already pressing deep into that jumpsuit, driven home not of her own volition but by the patient's own manacled – and surprisingly strong – hands. "See? It's okay, baby," soothed Farnham, as softly as to a restive child. Her wrists tensed, forcing Judy's hand even deeper into her formidable cleavage. "All okay. Go on… listen to my breathing, sweetie. Mmm… so soft and warm and steady…"

When Jimmy finds out about the law suit, he wants to break something. He’s just finished up a six hour surgery on a trauma patient when Sharon Goodwin takes him aside and shows him the video that was being streamed across the student platform throughout every single one of the universities attached to the study.

You’re up on stage delivering a seminar on Grief and Neurodivergence when a process server marches right up to you and thrusts it into your hands. He sees your confusion in the moment as he tells you you’re being sued before he trapes back up the aisle. To your credit you don’t falter, you simply fold up the piece of paper, set it down on the podium and continue your lecture as if the whole thing never happened. You amaze him sometimes, anyone else would have fallen to pieces if they had been humiliated in that way but you just shake it off.

“Where is she?” He asks, running a hand through his unruly dark hair in agitation and Sharon pushed the button to call the lift before responding.

“In the conference room upstairs with Peter.” She says as they both step inside. “I asked him to take some time out of his schedule as a personal favour to discuss her options.”

“A personal favour.” Jimmy repeats, his gaze fixed on the digital panel as the numbers increase to indicate what floor they’re on. “I don’t understand, I thought it was a hospital matter, something related to the study.”

“No.” Sharon says in that tone she uses for patients, the ones she’s about to break bad news to. “It’s Daniel Redford, he’s suing her for defamation of character.”

Jimmy doesn’t speak, he can’t. It’s like he’s been punched right in the face and he’s still standing there in the shock of it all. He wants to scream, he wants to shout, he wants to hunt down that arrogant son of a bitch and wrap his hands about his throat until his lips turn blue and he stops moving.

He knows that Danny is trying to punish you, that he’s seen how well you’ve been doing since leaving social services and he can’t have that, he can’t have you succeeding, not after you had him investigated for sexual harassment. That’s what the video was about. Jimmy has no doubt that it was orchestrated to disgrace you, to maximise your embarrassment. It isn’t enough that you had to re-live one of the most horrendous time periods of your life when you opened that letter, he has to ruin your reputation too.

“I’m going to kill him.” He finds himself saying, his hands clenching into fists as the elevator comes to a stop. “I’m going to fucking kill him.”
