k so there was this stitch going around tiktok where somebody was saying that fascists deserve to eat and be housed and people are ripping into him but.
here's the thing. they're human rights, not good person rights. I'm not shedding any tears over nazis getting punched in the face for their hate speech. this doesn't mean tolerating their shit. it doesn't mean giving them a platform. it just means providing them with the bare minimum to survive, as we would for everybody in this hypothetical world.
besides, how would you realistically enforce this? by my personal opinion is that there should be as few barriers to food and shelter and Healthcare etc as possible. not a fan of the idea of a soup kitchen making you fill out a political ideology questionnaire before they'll help you.
yesterday I gave a homeless guy some water bottles and money. I didn't ask about his political alignment first, I just gave it to him. it didn't even occur to me to ask.
now I have a question, why does your hypothetical perfect world include questions about who does and doesn't deserve human rights? I really don't like the fact that people are uncritically engaging in that conversation tbqh. at the end of the day, who benefits from the idea that some people just don't deserve basic human rights? who benefits from you engaging with this question in good faith?
because if somebody asks "do fascists deserve human rights?" what they're really asking, whether they realize it or not, is "should human rights be revoked in some cases?"

sorry if you've talked about it already, but what is it that makes KOSA's idea of online safety wrong? I don't know much about the bill, what does it intend to do?
What do you think is a good way to protect kids from things like online predators or just seeing things that they shouldn't be seeing? (By which I mean sex and graphic violence, things which you'd need to be 16+ to see in a movie theater so I think it makes sense to not want pre-teens to see it)
From stopkosa.com:
Why is KOSA a bad bill? KOSA uses two methods to “protect” kids, and both of them are awful. First, KOSA would incentivize social media platforms to erase content that could be deemed “inappropriate” for minors. The problem is: there is no consensus on what is inappropriate for minors. All across the country we are seeing how lawmakers are attacking young people’s access to gender affirming healthcare, sex education, birth control, and abortion. Online communities and resources that queer and trans youth depend on as lifelines should not be subject to the whims of the most rightwing extremist powers and we shouldn’t give them another tool to harm marginalized communities.  Second, KOSA would ramp up the online surveillance of all internet users by expanding the use of age verification and parental monitoring tools. Not only are these tools needlessly invasive, they’re a massive safety risk for young people who could be trying to escape domestic violence and abuse.
I’ve heard there’s a new version of KOSA. What’s the deal? The new version of KOSA makes some good changes: narrowing the ability of rightwing attorneys general to weaponize KOSA to target content they don’t like and limiting the problematic “duty of care. However, because the bill is still not content neutral, KOSA still invites the harms that civil rights advocates have warned about. As LGBTQ and reproductive rights groups have said for months, the fundamental problem with KOSA is that its “duty of care” covers content specific aspects of content recommendation systems, and the new changes fail to address that. In fact, personalized recommendation systems are explicitly listed under the definition of a design feature covered by the duty of care in the new version. This means that a future Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could still use KOSA to pressure platforms into automated filtering of important, but controversial topics like LGBTQ issues and abortion, by claiming that algorithmically recommending such content “causes” mental health outcomes that are covered by the duty of care like anxiety and depression. Bans on inclusive books, abortion, and gender affirming healthcare have been passed on exactly that kind of rhetoric in many states recently. And we know that already existing content filtering systems impact content from marginalized creators exponentially more, resulting in discrimination and censorship. It’s also important to remember that algorithmic recommendation includes, for example, showing a user a post from a friend that they follow, since most platforms do not show all users all posts, but curate them in some way. As long as KOSA’s duty of care isn’t content neutral, platforms will be likely to react the same way that they did to the broad liability imposed by SESTA/FOSTA: by engaging in aggressive filtering and suppression of important, and in some cases lifesaving, content.
Why it's bad:
The way it's written (even after being changed, which the website also goes over), it is still possible for this law to be used to restrict things like queer content, discussion of reproductive rights and resources, and sexual education.
It will restrict youth's ability to use the Internet independently, essentially cutting off life support to many vulnerable people who rely on the Internet to learn that they are queer, being abused, disabled, etc.
Better alternatives:
Stop relying on ageist ideas of purity and innocence. When we focus on protecting the "purity" of youth, we dehumanize them and it becomes more about soothing adult anxieties than actually improving the lives of children.
Making sure content (sexual, violent, etc.) is marked/tagged and made avoidable for anyone who doesn't want to engage with it.
Teach children why certain things may be upsetting and how best to avoid those things.
Teach children how to recognize grooming and abuse and empower them to stop it themselves.
Teach children how to recognize fear, discomfort, trauma, and how to cope with those experiences.
The Internet makes a great boogeyman. But the idea that it is uniquely corrupting the Pure Innocent Youth relies on the idea that all children are middle-class suburban White kids from otherwise happy homes. What about the children who see police brutality on their front lawns, against their family members? How are we protecting them from being traumatized? Or children who are seeing and experiencing physical and sexual violence in their own homes, by the parents who prevent them from realizing what's happening by restricting their Internet usage? How does strengthening parent's rights stop those kids from being groomed? Or the kids who grow up in evangelical Christian homes and are given graphic descriptions of the horrors of the Apocalypse and told if they ever question their parents, they'll be left behind?
Children live in the same world we do. There are children who are already intimately aware of violence and "adult" topics because of their lived experiences. Actually protecting children means being concerned about THEIR human rights, it means empowering them to save themselves, it means giving them the tools to understand their own feelings and traumas. KOSA is just another in a long line of attempts to "save the children!" by dehumanizing them and giving more power to the people most likely to abuse them. We need to stop trying to protect children's "innocence" and appreciate that children are already growing, changing people, learning to deal with discomfort and pain and the weight of the world the same as everyone else. What people often think keeps kids safe really just keeps them ignorant and quiet.
Another explanation as to why it's bad:

Do you really think that the needs of detransitioners aren't being centered or talked about enough? I refer you to the people under your post engaging in conspiracy theories about how trans healthcare is being pushed on poor innocent children by evil doctors. This stuff is the basis for legislation currently being passed in what is likely to soon be a majority of US states, not to mention the UK. I just feel like maybe detransition is a little too much in focus, idk.
The first thing to point out is that I didn’t even call for ‘more’ talking about detransitioners. I wrote one paper where I talked about detransitioners (among other folks). Then someone got pissed about it. Then I wrote a post about how treating detransitioners and those who talk about them like ‘traitors’ isn’t helpful. Also… intra-community discussions on Tumblr are very much not a comparable context to anti-trans newsmedia or legislatures?
Second, you could say the same about trans people; why do we need to talk about their needs, aren’t they being talked about all the time in the media.
Which brings us to the central issue, namely that volume isn’t quality. The media weaponizing detransitioners for anti-trans agendas isn’t actually ‘centring the needs of detranstioners’. It’s centring the interests of anti-trans movements. None of the discussions actually include expanding mental healthcare and medical support for detransitioners, for instance, even though that’s constantly reported by detransitioners as core needs in research.
Staying silent and letting the media platform anti-trans activists as ‘the voice of detransitioners’ won’t counter anti-trans narratives. By contrast, an important part of countering those anti-trans narratives involves building solidarity and community with pro-trans detrans folks.
Do I like that the media has put such a spotlight on detransitioners in pursuit of transphobic agendas? No, but that’s the reality we’re working under and I don’t think letting anti-trans detrans narratives roam free and define detransitioners in the public eye is going to turn out well for trans folks.
It’s also worth emphasizing that detrans folks are real people with real needs, so the implicit idea that we just shouldn’t talk or care about them because transphobes talk about them enough already just doesn’t sit right with me.

I just found out about Jasmine Sherman and they look really cool. Like, the policies that they say they’re going to do? The fact that they have an audiobook option for people to listen to what the policies say on their platform? (If people don’t have JAWS or screen readers on their devices, JAWS for computers.) I really hope they get far enough in the presidential race.

It's time to actually put the people in America first. We do that by meeting everyone's basic human needs. This includes guaranteed housing, universal healthcare and education, UBI, and environmental/infrastructure reform. In doing this, we give people a fighting chance to create a more sustainable model for society that ensures the general welfare of people within our borders for generations to come.
1) Housing- Decommodify housing and eliminate rent, mortgages and property taxes 2) Healthcare- 100% coverage including vision and dental 3) Education- universal education up to and including doctorate level studies 4) UBI-a monthly disbursement based on the cost of living in a resident's state 5) Environment/Infrastructure reform- Abating the damage caused by climate change through sustainable development and creating an infrastructure that fosters community
The Jasmine Sherman for President campaign envisions organizing through various strategies. They aim to leverage social media and technological advancements for rapid outreach to a wider audience. Direct action and mutual aid will be prioritized to attract like-minded individuals and build a strong support base. The campaign will also focus on nurturing relationships established through past coalition-building efforts, aiming to strengthen connections and amplify the campaign's impact. By combining these approaches, Jasmine Sherman's campaign aims to effectively engage, mobilize, and expand its reach in pursuit of its organizing goals

while good omens is still in my pinned post (for now) i currently have the tag blocked and havent been posting about his works since shortly after the allegations came out. i havent removed good omens from my pinned post since neil gailman was not the only person who wrote that book, it is also terry pratchets work, and the story means a great deal to me.
jk rowling is actively using her money to fund the genocide of transgender people. she wants us dead and wont stop until she has achieved that. she has also stated that she considers support for her works as equal to support for her ideology.
neil gaiman is (allegedly) a rapist, yes. and im not denying that. but joanne is on a whole different level. neils actions are immoral, but ultimately they only affect him and those closest to him. jk rowling is fanning the flames of transphobia in this country and around the world, which directly affects me, my safety, and the safety of many of my closest friends.
im not scared of looking like an immoral twat. im human, im going to make mistakes sometimes and if someone calls me out for genuinely problematic behaviour i will change my ways. what i am scared of is losing access to transgender healthcare, which will cause rates of transgender suicides to skyrocket. we have already begun to see this happening. what i am scared of is not being able to use the bathroom in public any more, because no matter which bathroom i use im gnc enough to be beaten to death for daring to piss in a toilet.
what im scared of is intersex women, women of colour, and gnc women being 'transvestigated' and harrassed until they get invasive medical procedures to prove that they are a 'real woman'
harry potter fans are directly contributing to this womans platform and success. the harm that jk rowling is doing is a whole different ball game to whatever neil gaiman gets up to in his spare time.
so. to clarify. have i stopped engaging with neils works? yes. should you stop engaging with harry potter? YES.
now fuck off back to whatever tar pit you crawled out of

New study of how American LGBTQ people use the internet
Tumblr media
The report "ctrl+alt+lgbt: Digital Access, Usage, and Experiences of the LGBTQ+ Community" by Data for Progress highlights the critical role of digital technology in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals.
The study, based on a survey of 1,304 LGBTQ+ adults in the United States, reveals several key findings:
Internet usage is nearly universal among LGBTQ+ adults, with 96% using it daily, demonstrating a strong reliance on digital connectivity.
LGBTQ+ adults frequently access the internet in public spaces, including coffee shops, libraries, and LGBTQ+ community centers.
The internet is widely used for essential services, with 87% searching for health information online, 61% using telehealth services, and 44% finding LGBTQ+-friendly healthcare providers.
Social media platforms play a significant role in the lives of LGBTQ+ adults, with many joining before the age of 18 for social connections and self-expression.
Online spaces have had a profound impact on LGBTQ+ identity and self-expression, particularly for transgender adults (90%), younger LGBTQ+ adults (87%), and LGBTQ+ people of color.
Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ adults experience online harassment and encounter misinformation, with transgender individuals facing higher rates of these issues.
Despite challenges, a majority of LGBTQ+ adults feel safe in online spaces, which is crucial for their continued engagement and expression in digital environments.
The report emphasizes that while the internet provides vital resources and community for LGBTQ+ individuals, it also reflects real-world inequities and prejudices.
