big informational post on israel & palestine

before i start, i want to say that the end goal is not defeating one side or the other. we want peace, for both nations to exist together. there are innocent and good people in both israel and palestine. here is a thread with basic information on the conflict.

White phosphorus is also highly flammable, and can be reignited during treatment. here is a thread with more information.

Armor piercing bombs. As implied by the name, they can penetrate metal and travel long distances. Armor piercing bombs are designed to pierce through bunkers, warships, and heavily enforced targets. They can easily destroy buildings and famously sunk the USS Arizona in 1941.

Indian Economy Shows Growth and Expansion

Private credit is becoming more popular for Indian projects as entrepreneurs prefer short-term debt over giving up ownership. This is happening because new private equity (PE) investments are decreasing, and many PEs are leaving through public markets.

Several companies are planning to enter capital markets soon to provide money to PE fund investors.

"Private credit demand is going up. Big credit funds are investing lots of money in Indian companies, both struggling and doing well," says Bhavin Shah, a partner at PwC India.

PE firms offer private credit at slightly higher rates than shared loans and also provide global expertise to entrepreneurs.

Tax uncertainty worries PEs in India, with many still getting income-tax notices despite efforts to clarify the system," Shah notes.

"This is India's decade, with global PE investors planning big investments," says Eric Janson, global head of private equity at PwC.

In 2021, India saw record private investments, leading to record exits for early investors. In 2023, there were also record exits through public market sales.

Global PE funds usually hold their investments for 6-7 years and make returns of 3.5x–4.5x on their original investment in CY22 and CY23.

M&A activity increased in Q1 2024, with 455 deals worth $25.6 billion, a 24% increase from Q4CY23, showing a market change.

Dinesh Arora, a partner at PwC India, says: "Amid opportunities, the Indian economy is doing well. Q1 2024 is the best in six quarters, showing growth and a desire for expansion."

While M&A average deal sizes stayed the same, PE deal sizes fell 39%, with most deals under $50 million, especially in the lower- and mid-market segments.

The biggest deal was in media and entertainment, with Reliance Industries and Walt Disney forming a joint venture.

Tamannaah Bhatia to headline Dharmatic Entertainment produced start-up dramedy for Prime Video: Report

This marks the second project Dharmatic Entertainment following Showtime, starring Emraan Hashmi and Naseeruddin Shah. It is set for a summer 2024 release.

Tamannaah Bhatia is set to collaborate with Dharma Productions’ digital wing, Dharmatic Entertainment, for an upcoming start-up dramedy, set for Prime Video India. While the title of the project is kept under wraps, Archit Kumar of Dr. Arora fame will be directing this light-hearted series.

As per a report in Peeping Moon, this dramedy will feature two women and the casting for the second lead is underway. The report states, “Currently in pre-production, filming is slated for mid-March or early April, creating anticipation for a nuanced exploration of the highs and lows of the startup journey.” The actress is all set to explore yet another different genre with the upcoming tipsy dramedy.

This marks the second project Dharmatic Entertainment following Showtime, starring Emraan Hashmi and Naseeruddin Shah. It is set for a summer 2024 release.

For Tamanaah Bhatia, this marks her sixth digital project, following Prime Video’s Jee Karda, Netflix’s Plan A Plan B and Lust Stories 2 and Disney+Hotstar’s Aakhiri Sach and Babli Bouncer.

Let's take a moment to recognize the immense force that is the BTS Army, a global army of fans of the K-pop group BTS who are dedicated to promoting social change in addition to the group's catchy songs and gorgeous vocals. Prior to the US election, the BTS Army staged a Trump rally by reserving hundreds of seats so that Trump would speak to a partially empty stadium. In 2020, the group launched a number of powerful campaigns, raising millions of dollars and bombarding white supremacist hashtags with short, edited videos of the band(Rebels, 2022).

Fan Activism

The activity of uniting pop culture enthusiasts for social change is known as fan activism. It uses a variety of fandoms, interest groups, and strategies to confront social concerns via the prism of popular culture (Action Network, n.d.).

Fan activism can take many different forms, including advocating for social justice, supporting organizations that share similar ideals with fundraising efforts, and protecting fan works from commercial exploitation and copyright infringement claims.

Notable Examples of Fan Activism:

The Glee Equality Project: In order to better address homophobic and transphobic conduct and portray straight partnerships differently from LGBT+ ones, this fan activist movement sought to rework plotlines in the television series Glee (SPARKMovement, n.d.).

Harry Potter Alliance: Millions of Harry Potter fans have been inspired by this fan advocacy group to take up social issues, such equality and education, and they have won changes like Warner Bros. switching to 100% Fairtrade or UTZ sourcing for their Harry Potter chocolate (SPARKMovement, n.d.).

Racebending Movement: This fan activism movement, which attempts to advance diversity in Hollywood films, was started in response to the live-action The Last Airbender movie's whitewashing of the cast (Simons-Rudolph, 2019).

K-pop fans: This fan activism group, formerly known as the Harry Potter Alliance, has garnered a lot of attention and research and has organized fans to promote a variety of social justice topics.

Q: Do toxic fans in some online spaces (e.g. Twitter) make it difficult to become or identify as a fan?

YES. Online echo chambers are the breeding ground for toxic fan culture, where fans use purity tests to attack other fans and get into exaggeratedly passionate arguments about the stuff they watch. Abuse of other fans by toxic fans is common, with them characterizing the other as "fake" or "true" in their critique. For new fans, this kind of behavior can create a hostile atmosphere where they feel unwelcome or intimidated by the fanbase (MovieFanZ, n.d.).

Diversity and inclusion: Diverse fandoms are more likely to be hospitable and nice to all fans, especially Asian fans, if they actively support diversity and inclusion (Bae, 2023).

Communities and platforms: Some online communities and platforms support inclusive and good fandom experiences more than others. Fans can interact with people who share their interests on social media sites like Reddit and Twitter, which provide them a sense of community and belonging (Opinion, 2022).

Fan studies: Researching fandom can reveal information on the dynamics of online communities and point out elements that support a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all fans.
