Big Bend Chapter Twenty Seven - Aquarium
Word count: ~1300 words
Cw: mentions of giant killing someone in the past, past trauma, cursing
Angie’s POV
I felt like my mind was reeling from Dave’s revelation. I didn’t want to harp on what was clearly a very traumatic event, instead deciding to let him lead. So when he changed the subject, saying we should get going to the aquarium, I didn’t argue. Despite that, though, his account remained in my mind even as we entered the aquarium’s doors, as we bought our tickets, and as we started looking around. I had countless questions I wanted the answer to. Most of which I knew he didn’t even have the answer to, like who that man that was killed was, or who the giant who had killed him was. How the giant had gotten to earth, and where he’d gone after the incident.
All questions he likely wanted to know even more than I did, I thought.
I tried to refocus on the exhibits around us, a plan that was so far miserably failing. Jellyfish were plenty intriguing, but they hardly held a candle to the sheer shock factor of what my coworker had just shared with me.
Dave picked up on my distractedness fairly quickly. “Kind of killed the vibe with that trauma dump, huh?” He said, giving a half hearted laugh. I shook my head quickly.
“No-I mean, yes, but like, I’m glad you shared. I just can’t imagine what that must have been like to see as a kid, I guess.”
Dave gave a small shrug. “Yeah. It still feels surreal to me, honestly.”
“And I’m really surprised you’re working with Easton and us after…that,” I said, the words slipping from my mouth before I could second guess them. Out of the many, many questions I had, that was one of the ones that confused me the most. Sure, Dave’s continued unease around our giant coworker made more sense now, but why he’d take and then keep the job now made even less sense. I’d think the last thing he want to do was work with a giant in the middle of nowhere after seeing a giant kill someone in the middle of nowhere as a child.
“Me too,” Dave admitted. He met my gaze, giving a resigned sigh. “I don’t really know what I was thinking. Or what I am thinking.” He paused. “Have you ever been so afraid of something that it almost becomes some sort of fascinating?”
I considered his question. “Well, I guess I like watching horror movies and true crime for kind of a similar reason?”
“Yeah. So there’s the whole scary but fascinating part, and then I guess I was hoping maybe working woth Easton would help me get over it, but really I think it just made everything more confusing, because he’s so…human? Like, the giant that killed that guy has always just been some shadowy monster in my brain, but Easton’s…nice. Funny. Anxious. Kind of awkward…all these traits that don’t fit with some caricature of a boogey man. God, I don’t even know what I’m trying to say.”
“No, no, I think I get it?” I offered.
“And then I end up feeling bad that I am still so freaked out by him, because sometimes he really just seems like another…person? And then I remember he’s not even from our world, and he’s bigger than some of our buildings, and he could kill me just as easily as that other giant killed that man-and then I just get stuck in this weird limbo of feeling guilty because I don’t really think he’d do something that like, and feeling scared because he could, and not wanting to quit because I don’t want what happened back then to define my while life, but very much wanting to quit because what am I thinking…and, fuck, I’m really rambling.
“Hey, it’s okay,” I said, offering Dave a hopefulym reassuring smile. “I don’t know how I’d even begin to process all of that, but I’m more than happy to listen if that’ll help.”
“Thanks,” Dave said. “I really am sorry for ruining the vibe, though. I mean, there’s some really cool fish here.”
“And we have plenty of time to see them still,” I said. “Really, you don’t need to apologize. I was just trying to process, I guess.”
“You and me both,” Dave said with a dry laugh.
I leaned over to give Dave a half hug after a moment.
“Thanks for trusting me with that,” I said.
We turned to look at the jellyfish in front of us, this silence washing over us this time comfortable instead of awkward. I wasn’t exactly sure how long we stood there, the blue creatures in front of us drifting lazily through the water, tentacles swirling behind them. It wasn’t either of us who eventually broke the silence, but instead a new voice.
“They’re pretty, aren’t they,” the unfamiliar voice mused from behind us. Dave and I both turned at the same time to see who had spoken. The newcomer was a man perhaps a bit older than us - late twenties or early thirties, if I had to guess. I hadn’t seen him enter the dimly lit room that housed the jellyfish exhibit, but then again, I hadn’t been paying much attention to my surroundings during our prior conversation.
“They’re real mesmerizing,” Dave agreed. “It’s kind of amazing that they don’t have a brain…ocean life is weird.”
“All life is weird if you think too hard about it,” the stranger said. “It requires such delicate balance.” He paused. “Have you seen the alligator exhibit upstairs yet?”
I shook my head. “Not yet. We just got here.”
“It’s worth checking out, if only to appreciate how long crocodilians have called this planet home.”
“Oh, that’s right - they’ve existed since like the dinosaurs, haven’t they?”
The stranger nodded. “One of the two remaining archosaurs.”
“You seem like you know a lot about animals,” Dave said.
The stranger shrugged. “I enjoy learning. I’m Lee, by the way.”
Dave extended his hand. “Dave. This is Angie.”
“Pleasure to meet you. Are you two from the area?” Lee asked, shaking Dave’s hand. I was already shaking my head before he’d finished the question.
“Not really. Just here on a weekend trip,” I said. “You?”
“Something similar,” Lee replied. “I was in the area for business.”
“We’re in the area to get away from business,” Dave joked.
“I think we all need to do that every now and then. You two work together, then?”
“Yeah. We’re both park rangers, we had the weekend off and thought we’d come over here,” I replied.
“Park rangers! That sounds like a fun job - I used to work at a park myself. Just as a tour guide, though. Which park are you at?”
“Big Bend,” Dave replied.
“Ah, I think I’ve seen that one in the news a lot recently. Something about hiring a giant?”
“Yeah. An aphirial. His name’s Easton Parks.”
“A fitting name for his job,” Lee said with a laugh. “Park ranger Parks.”
I was a little surprised that was what he’d focused on, given the other bit of information I’d offered. Easton’s name being ironically fitting had occurred to me as well, though, and I gave a small laugh.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“What did you say you did for work?” Dave asked.
“I didn’t, but I’m a freelancer of sorts these days,” Lee replied. “It gives me plenty of time to travel.”
“That must be nice,” I said. “We both stay pretty busy. Still, we’re lucky to have gotten this weekend at least.”
“Beautiful weekend here too, not too hot. It does get pretty hot over by Big Bend, though, doesn’t it?”
“That’s putting it lightly,” Dave said. “Puts Arizona to shame somedays, I swear.”
“I’ve heard the flash floods over there do too,” Lee said. He paused, as if remembering something. “Well, I should get going - I won’t interrupt your weekend any further. I hope you enjoy the rest of the aquarium!”
He didn’t wait for us to respond before leaving the room.
“Huh,” Dave said after a moment. “That was kinda weird.”

On the Injustices of the Modern Senior Discount
Words: 1143 Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson, Argyle/Jonathan Byers Characters: injustices of the world Additional Tags: Humor, Shippy Gen, idiot 4 idiot Summary: Steve finds Eddie, Argyle and Jonathan in the middle of a protest.
When Steve finds his guy, Eddie’s handcuffed to the theatre doors. His right wrist is, anyway. His left is cuffed to Argyle’s. And cuffed to Argyle’s left ankle, is Jonathan’s right. Argyle attempts a wave, but the movement takes Eddie’s arm with it, which results in a supersized soaking of icy coke all over the pair. Jonathan snorts. Probably because he’s managed to be unscathed by the splash back.
“S’why we should have gone with 7-up.” He says. But Steve barely catches it from where he lies on the sidewalk, head pillowed in his hands.
“But you like coke, dude.” Argyle says, taking off his second layer and dabbing it at his sticky stomach.
“Without…a doubt…” Jonathan says through yawns, “but 7-up doesn’t stain.”
“Board shorts can be replaced, you know, but supersized sales on fountain drinks last forever.”
“No man, this all-you-can-drink sale ends July thirty-first, ” Eddie says, “And today’s the… ”
“Thirtieth .” Jonathan supplies.
“Yeah, so like, what are we doing sitting here and not like, out there, disrupting the land?" Argyle asks, "High time we pretended we’re some white folk from the east, man, and that that fountain machine is our California gold.”
“Some of us are white folk from the east.” Jonathan breathes.
Steve can't be sure that he's really even awake. Argyle tries again, but Steve shuts him down immediately, not needing to hear anything more.
“Could I just—“ Steve pinches the bridge of his nose (and mumbles why do I even hang out with you bozos), “—could I just interrupt you guys for a sec. Anyone want to tell me what’s up with the cuffs?”
“Cuffs?” Eddie asks, with a head tilt. “Come again?”
“I said, DID YOU PUT YOURSELF HERE OR DO I HAVE TO CALL BAIL BONDS?”
The trio wince.
“Roll the volume back to 3, brother, I’m sensitive.” Argyle says, twisting a pinky in his ear.
“He always swabs too harsh.” Jonathan says, and turn to his side. It brings Argyle’s ankle over his own. Argyle doesn’t seem to notice or mind.
“You wanna make sure you got all those little gummy guys out of there.” Eddie says, “Jay think fast!”
Jonathan returns to his back a second late and instead of his open mouth, the popcorn kernel Eddie tossed at him falls into his shirt. Steve hadn’t seen it before, but when Jonathan sits up, there is a littering of kernels outlining Jonathan’s concrete bed like some kind of buttery snow-angel. Eddie shoots him a comforting smile.
“I’ll get it one day.” Jonathan says with a shrug.
“Hey, I won’t give up on you, if you don’t give up on you.” Eddie says. Argyle places a hand on Eddie's shoulder.
“That right there, brooooooooo, that’s some real ass shit man. You could work for hallmark.”
“Nah, I wouldn’t last one—“
“GUYS!” Steve shouts again. “Let’s reel this back to why the hell you’re all cuffed together, mmkay?”
“Oh, yeah, we’re protesting.” Eddie says and fishes a half soak joint from his pocket.
He frowns. Argyle pats him on the back consolingly, retreats, and digs through Jonathan’s jean jacket to procure some rolling papers.
“Protesting what?”
Argyle takes out his wallet, places a paper on top, and uses a nail to cut open the soaked joint. He empties the bud onto the new paper and re-rolls like he’s performing brain surgery.
“Being denied the senior discount.” Eddie says with a growl.
“None of you are seniors.” Steve says.
“What, because of our age? I was a senior a mere three months ago, my guy.” Argyle says, and then snaps his fingers in Eddie’s direction. Eddie mindlessly brings out his zippo and hands it to Argyle.
“Doctor.” Eddie says quickly.
“Doctor.” Argyle says in kind. He holds the flame under the length of the joint, close enough to seal but not burn.
“No, right? For christ sakes, Steve, I was a senior three times. That means I should have like, three times the discount…” Eddie’s brows scrunch. “If my math is right.”
Steve covers both hands over his face. And then runs them through his hair, pushing back the waves in all kinds of odd angles. He imagines they look like how he inwardly feels—distressed.
“It’s not.” He says flatly.
“But the formula…” Argyle starts. And Steve has to cut him off again.
“You! Hey!” Steve kicks at bottom of one of Jonathan’s converse. “Okay, no, you—why are you here? You know better.”
“Oh, I know better, man. I know better than to trust the man to fairness and equality. We all deserve access to Alien 3.”
“Sure. Right. Okay.”
“Plus,” Jonathan says with a laugh, “this is where the bud went and I was promised nachos.”
“Christ, you really need to stop hanging around Eddie, because you’re starting to make less sense than him.”
“Nah, E&J Spa Day Saturdays are sacred and irreplaceable.”
“You don’t even go to the spa.”
“I dunno, it just sounds better than Jonathan and Eddie get blasted, visit natural history museums, and make up fake lore about earth and mankind’s evolution Saturdays.”
“Huh, now I see why I don’t get to tag along.” Steve says with raised brows. “Guess I owe you a thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.” Jonathan says.
“Wait, wait…so where’s the patty wagon?”
“Get this. These are the auxiliary doors.” Eddies says.
“Walk me through that one?” Steve raises a brow.
“We can’t, sweets, because they’re only for emergencies.” Eddie says this like Steve is five, as if he's the one missing the mark. Steve rolls his eyes.
“Forget I asked. Alternate definitions welcomed, guys.”
“Back doors.” Argyle says.
“Oh.” Steve scratches his brow with a pinky nail, “So no one’s even noticed you guys, have they?”
“Oh, they’ve noticed, Steve, baby. But just like any other injustice of the world all these—bawk bawk bawk—chickens are couped. Conditioned to ignore wrong doing if it ain’t immediately doing them wrong!”
Instead of engaging in whatever all that means, Steve squats and levels them all with a scrutinizing stare.
“How high are you guys right now?”
Argyle frowns. Starts to speak. Stops. Studies the joint he’s nursed back to health. And then fixes Steve with a serious look.
“Dude, I think the real question is how high aren’t we right now? Like, one could posit that, like, we can and should, be like, higher.”
Steve closes his eyes. Breathes through his nose.
“I don’t even—christ—get yourself unlocked. I’ll pay for the tickets. You’re still getting the Nachos, babe.” Steve says.
“Fair enough." Eddie nods. "Suppose the cause could pause for a free hour and a half of thrills and chills.”
When everyone is free and standing, Argyle’s striking up the lighter again. Steve steals the joint he’d been meaning the light right from his lips.
“If I’m buying, you assholes sure as hell owe me first hit.”

// In which Odette & None go fishing...
Tumblr media
You are a world away when you feel the line tug. Your hands respond more out of surprise than any real skill, a sharp tug upward. Out of the corner of your eye, you see None’s big ears twitch and they rise. Embarrassment burns in your cheeks. You want to impress None but fishing has never been one of your talents.
They are next to you soon enough, guiding you through the steps. Pull, reel, pull -- let him go a little, sweets but not too much. Is he heavy? Their voice is a rasp, a fall of gravel. It is low and quiet as though they fear the fish might hear and give up the pursuit. Their fingers close around the pole, carefully avoiding touching you. Gratitude filled you twice over.
With None’s aid, the fish is out of the water before long. They nimbly remove the hook from the fish’s lip - you wince in sympathy, feel a burning in your throat - and then None gestures to you. You lift your arm so they can measure the fish against it, expression thoughtful.
You think None is beautiful.
(You would never tell them this, they would say thank you but they would hate it.)
Their hair is a dark, deep green that reminds you of moss and their eyes are large and brown like the worn leather of your pack. Their fingers are calloused and their face lined with age and grief. It never tells you much but you know None well enough to read the minute changes.
(You once told them they must have been born old and sad. You had meant it in a mean way. You had been twelve. None had laughed and the sound had filled you with such joy that you saved it, folded it up many times, and stored it in a corner of your heart.)
None pulled the fish back with a shake of their head, the end of their big, droopy ears swaying with the motion.
“Too small.”
They kissed each of the fish’s cheeks, the air just above its scales, and then wordlessly held it out to you.
You obediently leaned forward to mimic the gesture; a kiss for thanks and a kiss for luck. The fish stared blankly back at you, mouth gaping. None turned and squatted to gently release it into the water once more.
“S’good catch,” they murmured as they washed their hands.
“It was too small,” you detest how your voice whines when you say it and you sink a little more into your embarrassment.
“Lotta things are,” None replied with a shrug. Their voice was dry as ever. Nothing ever phased None and it made you envious, crybaby that you are. “We just try again.” They turned back to you and patted their stomach and, unexpectedly, gifted you with one of their grins; fierce and out of place on their exhausted features.
(You do your best to memorize the expression. Forever stealing traits from those you adore; it is the only love language you know.)
None is saying, “I’ve got a big hunger so, get back to it.” They hand you the fishing line. They have already baited your hook for you and though it wasn’t your hands that pierced the worm with the hook you still feel… queasy. You watch it wiggle for a while, trying to puzzle through the emotions that sit heavy in your stomach.
None hasn’t let go of the fishing pole. They are watching you.  You don’t mind, you never have. None watches you how they watch everyone; how you imagine a tree might watch a squirrel upon its branch. They are only observing, perhaps some mild concern for safety.
Their eyebrows lift in a silent question.
You want so badly to be something else, at this moment. But you are what you are and your heart beats from the edge of your sleeve.
“Does it hurt…?” your voice is so small.
None’s right ear twitched and they looked down at the worm on the hook.
“Probably.”
“Oh.” Not the answer you wanted and your heart constricted painfully.
None makes a noise. Some might think it annoyance, maybe anger. You know it is helplessness. The silence stretches long.
“If I take it off the hook it will likely die anyway, sweets.” Their voice has changed. You hate and love that you have this power; to change the enduring monotone of None’s voice. It is softer now. Like someone has laid velvet over the gravel in a strange attempt at comfort. “Next town I’ll buy different bait.”
It is a victory of a sort but you do not feel pleased. You can only watch the worm on the hook.
Eventually, None casts the line and places the pole in your hands.
“Fish gotta eat, sweets. So do I.” It is gently said and you think None would kiss your brow if you were different.
For the first time, you are thankful you do not.

Just wanted to say you’re an amazing writer and I loveeeeee reading your content…..any chance you could write a snippet with Wind and Fierce??? Pretty please! 🥹❤️🙏🏻
”Ok, but this stuff is the good bait,” Wind said eagerly, wiggling the bait in front of him.
The Fierce Deity watched him curiously, intrigued. “The good bait?”
“Oh yeah! This’ll attract all the fish, not just your standard bass, oh no, they’ll all come running!” Wind continued, throwing his fishing rod over his shoulder with enough gusto to almost knock himself off balance.
Fierce smiled, his own rod in hand. “Lead on, then, little hurricane.”
Wind twirled on his heels, marching towards the lake. As he walked, he asked, “Is there a lot of water where you’re from, Gramps?”
Fierce walked slowly since one of his steps was equivalent to four of Wind’s strides. “A fair amount, yes. No oceans from what I can recall.”
Wind paused as they reached the shore. He glanced at Fierce a little uncertainly. “What you can recall?”
“I have been trapped in that mask for a long time, little zephyr,” Fierce sighed. “I have… lost memories in that time.”
Wind’s expression was something akin to sympathy, one Fierce was not accustomed to having levied against him. The cursed deity sat, patting the ground beside him to move the topic along. He didn’t need the scrutiny, nor did he wish to burden the child. “Tell me of your world.”
Wind trudged a little closer to the water and then cast the line. Fierce followed suit from his own position.
“Well, with the ocean there’s water as far as the eye can see,” Wind explained, his face glowing at the thought of it. “And the waves are never quiet, you’ve always got this constant noise in your head and the smell of sea salt in the air. It’s really great.”
The sailor’s shoulders sagged a little. “I miss home.”
Fierce watched him a moment, somewhat lost as to the right thing to say. After all, the cursed deity had no home. He asked, “Do you wish to return home?”
Wind sighed, shrugging. “Yes? But I don’t mean permanently, I just want to see everyone. Letters are great but it’s not the same as being there, you know?”
Fierce hummed thoughtfully before settling cheerfully into waiting for fish to bite. Neither had to wait long, and their lines were tugged nearly simultaneously. The pair carefully reeled in their prey, Wind squealing in delight as his flew through the air and smacked him in the face. Fierce played with his a little longer before the fish landed neatly in his clawed grasp.
“I told you the bait would work!” The sailor yelled. “I probably scared the other fish away though, but give it time; they always come for this stuff!”
Fierce smiled fondly at the boy, and the pair deposited their catch in the pouch Wind had brought along. Silence filled the air, pressing around them like a blanket, warming their hearts and minds. It was interrupted by the gentle lapping of the lake shore before Fierce finally spoke up.
“Home is where family is, you say?”
Wind glanced at him. “Hm? Yeah, you’re right.”
Fierce reached out, giving the boy a gentle back scratch. “Then you should remember you have a home here as well, little zephyr.”
Wind opened his mouth to speak and found no words coming out. Smiling gently, the boy launched himself into Fierce’s chest, nuzzling his nose into the mythical deity’s neck, fishing forgotten. No words needed to be said, and the pair held each other as the waves continued their gentle lullaby.

Almost Perfect (Sebastian x Fem!Farmer) Chapter 9: Tranquility
Warnings: Slow burn, personal struggles, anxiety, depression, eventual smut
Summary: Despite attempts to distract himself with work, Sebastian finds himself unable to shake off the memories from the previous night.
A/N: I rewrote this chapter several times and even though I'm not a big fan of what I came up with I think it's better than everything else I had.

Chapter 9: Tranquility
Spring 19
It had been 5 days since that night at the lake. Sebastian couldn't stop thinking about it, it took up every free moment within his day. He had been using his work to keep him from thinking about the exchange, but now that wasn't even helping. His fingers hovered over the keys and he sighed. All he could think about was the way his name sounded leaving her mouth and how magical it all felt.
“Shit…” He grumbled as he leaned back in his chair. He ran a hand through his hair and frowned. He didn't have time for this. He was never going to leave this basement prison at this rate.
He needed to get out of here, not waste time thinking about some damn girl.
Sebastian stood up from his seat and threw on his hoodie before heading up the stairs. Maybe he just needed some fresh air? It hadn't worked the last few times, but for whatever reason maybe now it would.
“Hey hon” Robin called from behind her desk. “Heading out for a bit?”
“I need to clear my head.” Sebastian turned to face his mom.
She nodded at him in understanding. “Still feeling worn out?”
Sebastian shrugged. “A bit.”
Robin hesitated for a moment before opening her mouth. “Maybe you should talk to Dr.Harvey?”
Sebastian let his head fall back in frustration. He wasn't really frustrated with his mom. He was more upset with himself that he just couldn't push through it. He didn't understand why he was having such a difficult time lately. “I'll think about it.”
Robin gave a wry smile at the answer but relented. “I won't bother you about it too much, but think about it, okay?”
Sebastian nodded and turned silently, leaving the house. Maybe she was right and he should talk to Harvey. It was awkward since they were essentially neighbors, but what else could he do? He'd talk to Maru about making an appointment for him later.
“Make sure you don't take more than what's necessary.” Sebastian looked up from his feet, Linus was talking with the farmer. Why did she have to be here right now?
She nodded and smiled politely at the older man. “I promise I’ll give back when I can.”
“Good.” Linus gave Angeline a rare smile that he had only ever shown Sebastian when he offered him some leftovers for the first time.
“Oh Sebastian!” Linus said as he looked over at him. “Isn't it a bit early for you?”
Sebastian rolled his eyes playfully. “Actually, it's pretty late for me.”
“Hey Sebastian.” Angeline said gently as she looked up at him from their now shared spot he supposed. She had been fishing and from the looks of it she had caught a few.
“I'll get out of your way.” Linus said as he picked up his basket. “Have a good day you two.” He called as he started to head towards the woods near the east of his house.
Angeline waved goodbye to Linus before turning her attention back to her fishing line. She seemed like she didn't have a care in the world. Why was he so on edge? Did she not feel what he was feeling? Was it really just him?
Sebastian silently pulled out his pack of smokes and took out his lighter. “You fish now?”
Angeline nodded. “I do it all.”
Sebastian grinned and blew some smoke into the air. “Oh really?”
She hummed in response and toyed with the reel in her hand. “Mhm.”
He couldn't stop looking her way as they stood there in their now shared spot. She seemed so at ease even though she had just moved here. If he wasn't so happy for her he'd be jealous. No matter how long he lived here he always felt out of place or in the way.
“You seem pretty comfortable out here.” He said as he continued to look her way.
Angeline shrugged. “I think it’s still too early to say for sure.” She looked over at Sebastian searching for something. Her stare made his heart ache. What it was she was searching for he couldn’t tell you, but her stare was making whatever he was feeling only intensify. “But it’s pretty peaceful here.”
Sebastian took another drag of his cigarette and leaned against a nearby tree. All the tension he was feeling for the past few days was dissipating. “You don’t mind the company, right?”
Angeline shook her head as she recasted her line. “Not at all. The more the merrier.”
“Good, ‘cause I could use some peace and quiet myself.” He said as he rubbed his tired eyes.
Angeline frowned slightly but nodded. “Rough week?”
“Something like that.” Sebastian rubbed the back of his neck. If he were being honest his whole life had felt rough, but these last few weeks had felt particularly hard. He could hardly sleep, his stomach constantly felt like it was in knots, and he just couldn’t stop thinking about her.
“I get that.” Angeline said sympathetically. She did? “Sometimes you just need to escape, even if it’s only for a little while.”
Sebastian watched her intently, letting her words sink in. “What about you?”
Angeline paused, considering what to say. “...Just trying to find something better, I guess.” She looked down at the fishing rod. “Fishing has been helping.”
There was a silence that washed over them. It wasn’t peaceful like the last time they stood outside by the lake. This time it felt somber and the air was heavy. He felt that if he said something more that he would break the moment they were sharing in two like It were pieces of glass.
“Sometimes it nice to just be out here, away from everything.” He said as he stubbed his cigarette out. He couldn’t even focus on smoking. His head felt like it was swimming, but not from the nicotine.
Angeline nodded and reeled in her fishing line. It seemed like the fish were done biting for the moment, or maybe she wasn’t able to focus either. “Yeah, I’m a bit jealous.” She smiled as she turned to look at Sebastian. “It’s like a little piece of heaven here.”
Sebastian looked over the lakeside, taking in the view. As much as he loathed the valley he did love this view, especially at dusk. The water always seemed so still and it was just the right amount of quiet. He would never have this in Zuzu, but despite loving this space he needed something different. At least that’s what he was telling himself. Pelican Town couldn’t give him what he truly needed despite the few bright spots here and there. “Well, I’m glad you found your way here.” At least he was leaving his spot to someone who could truly appreciate it. That was good enough.
“Thanks.” Angeline said softly.
“Anytime, Angeline.”
“I’ll see you at the saloon later?” Angeline asked him. The saloon? Crap, was it Friday?
Sebastian stood up straight and rolled his shoulders back, trying to ease the soreness from sitting at his desk. “Yeah, I’ll see you.”
Angeline nodded and picked up her things before walking back to her farm, leaving Sebastian alone by the lake again.
~*~
Angeline made her way to the saloon. She earned the break, between the farm and now fishing she felt like she was constantly working. She didn’t want to burn herself out the way she did when she was working for Joja. She owed herself the break, and she was looking forward to seeing everyone. Everyone being Abigail, Sam, Victor, and Sebastian. If she were being honest, she was most looking forward to seeing Sebastian, but she couldn’t really say as to why. She just found him incredibly interesting. Everyone else in the village was so open while he just held everything inside. She selfishly wanted to know more about him.
She thought back to how they spoke earlier at the lake and it made her heart flutter. Despite how incredibly vulnerable she felt in the moment it felt just as good. In any other instance she felt terrified to open up so much, but it felt so easy with him. Because of that she wanted more.
“Hey Ange!” Sam called out. He was standing right in front of Stardrop with Sebastian. He must’ve just gotten there too. She picked up her pace and made her way over to the pair.
“Hey” she said with a smile gracing her lips. Sebastian gave a small nod in greeting and Sam wrapped an arm around Angeline’s shoulder as he pulled her inside with them.
“I’m sooooo hungry.” Sam whined as he released Angeline from his hold and made his way over to the bar to order.
Angeline stood back and watched Sam with amusement as he chatted happily with Emily. “He seems like he’s in a good mood.”
“He asked Penny to the Flower Dance and she said yes.” Sebastian said as he tried to hold back a yawn.
Angeline nodded and pursed her lips a bit confused. “I thought you guys hated the Flower Dance?”
Sebastian nodded and headed into the game room, Angeline following behind him. “We do.”
“So?”
Sebastian shrugged. “I mean, they dance together every year without him asking.”
Angeline only became more confused with each word Sebastian spoke. “So then what’s the big deal exactly?”
Sebastian grabbed his pool cue and started to chalk the tip. “I think this year they’re going to walk to the dance together, too.”
Angeline tried to hold back a giggle. She found it cute how excited Sam was to just walk to the dance with Penny. She wasn’t sure if it was Sam or the influence of the village, but the whole situation was so wholesome. If this were Zuzu people would be making fun of Sam and Penny for sure, shaming them for moving like kids. “Th-that’s probably the cutest thing I ever heard.”
Sebastian gave a small chuckle. “Not much romance in the city?”
“Not like that.” Angeline shook her head.
“Did someone say romance?” Abigail asked as she made her way into the room, plopping down into her spot on the couch.
“Sam and Penny are walking to the dance together.” Sebastian explained.
Abigail rolled her eyes. “Oh I thought we were talking about something exciting.” She pulled out her phone and began typing without missing a beat.
“I think it’s cute.” Angeline said as she sat down next to Abigail.
“I have pizza and drinks!” Samn announced as he entered the room. “And I found Victor.”
“Found?” Abigail quirked a brow as she looked up from her phone.
“Ran into.” Victor corrected. He gave a small wave to Angeline before putting some coins into the Pumpkin Smashers cabinet.
“Found…ran into… that’s the same thing. “ Sam said as he placed the food and drinks on the table for everyone.
“I can’t believe we have three traitors in our presence.” Abigail pouted as everyone began to settle into their spots.
“Three?” Victor asked with a slight frown.
Abigail nodded and started to count on her fingers. “One and two, you and Angeline because you guys don’t have to dance and wear those awful outfits.” She frowned and pointed at Sam. “And now three, Samson, since he’s all happy because of Penny.”
Sam made a face when Abigail said his name. “Hey, why can’t you be happy for me like a normal friend?”
“Because I’m bitter.” Abigail huffed.
“Is it really that bad?” Angeline questioned.
“Yes.” Sam, Abigal, and Sebastian said in unison.
“It doesn’t look that fun to be honest.” Victor said as he thought back to previous dances.
Angeline frowned. “Well, I am looking forward to it.” She confessed. She was desperate to see everyone in the awful suits and dresses, and the dance itself had her even more curious.
“Then please take my place.” Abigail practically begged. “Sebastian can step on your feet instead.”
Angeline shook her head and felt her face flush. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to dance with Sebastian she didn’t want to dance, period. “N-no I really don’t want to.” She glanced over at Sebastian and he seemed just as opposed to the idea from the expression he made. Even though she didn’t want to dance, it still stung at little that Abgail and Sebastian would be dancing together.
~*~
The rest of the night carried on uneventfully. Sebastian and Sam played their usual game of pool, Sebastian winning for the third time of the night. Abigail played on her phone and Victor was trying his best to beat the highscore on Pumpkin Smashers.
Despite not much happening Angeline didn’t mind. She was getting into a routine and seemed to find a group of people that she could even call her friends.
“I should get going.” Angeline said as she stood up from the couch.
“Already?” Abigail looked up at her with a frown.
Angeline nodded and stretched. “Yeah, I have to get up early.”
“You too?” Sam said. Angeline glanced over and noticed that Sebastian was putting his cue back on the rack.
“Yeah, I just got a message from a client.” Sebastian explained as he rubbed his eyes. “They need a rush job on some project.”
“Oh you can do that anytime.” Abigail dismissed, causing Sebastian to frown and roll his eyes.
“I’m leaving.” Sebastian said and moved past Angeline towards the exit. Angeline quickly said her goodbyes and followed after him.
“Sebastian?” Angeline called out once she had exited the saloon. He stopped, he was only a few paces ahead of her.
She was surprised that he had stopped walking. He turned to look at her tiredly when she didn’t say anything else. She rushed over to him and felt herself panicking trying to think of something to say. “U-um…are you okay.”
Sebastian gave a mirthless chuckle. “I’m fine, thanks.”
Angeline frowned but nodded. “O-okay.” She didn’t want to push him. He was just finally starting to talk to her.
“Thanks for checking on me, really.” Sebastian said. “I’m just tired.”
Angeline smiled a bit. She wasn’t sure if he was being honest, but she appreciated him humoring her. “Have a goodnight, Sebastian.”
“Yeah, you too.” Sebastian said as he started to walk towards the path that led up to the mountains.
“Get some sleep!” Angeline called out as he moved further away.
“Yeah…you too.” Sebastian said softly to himself as he smiled gently.

Raising the dead and Scaring the Fish.
The Cleric and his son, the Warlock, found themselves locked in yet another argument.
"Cadmus, I implore you to cease offering Contracts to the townspeople, allowing you to reanimate their bodies into a zombie horde. It's against our faith," Alphonse said, his fingers anxiously twisting the beaded Dionysian rosary in his hand.
"But it's not as though they have any use for their bodies once their souls are gone. What harm is there?" Cadmus retorted with a sly grin, casually applying his eyeliner. He had a knack for provoking his father. From his perspective, he was doing the town a favor; the frozen tundra made it nearly impossible to bury the deceased properly, so they were often left to rot in the nearby woods, scavenged by beasts. Cadmus offered these bodies a chance at a new purpose – to fight in epic battles, defending the world from evildoers. Plus, his sales pitch provided a much-needed source of income for the starving townsfolk.
"Dionysus disapproves! Our faith revolves around celebrating life, and frankly, it's one of the few that imposes very few rules." It was a fact that the Dionysian faith embraced hedonism and the joy of life. As a priest, Alphonse had often preached the message of joy and love, but in their current location, he struggled due to the dreary and work-oriented mentality of the people, often facing rejection when trying to bring merriment.
"Once again, you say 'Our Faith.' I left the order years ago for much better terms. You may not appreciate my Patron and find his methods questionable, but he has yet to impose any objectionable demands upon me."
Al's face flushed with a mix of annoyance and embarrassment, his anger evident. "By the Maenads, you foolish boy! How on earth do you suggest we transport numerous dead bodies?" he fumed.
"Calm down, Dad, have some mead. I've already thought about that," Cadmus replied casually. He picked up his staff, twirled it in a circle, and struck the ground, creating a portal. "It's a simple pocket dimension. No dead bodies to stink up the place, and the lack of oxygen prevents decay. It's a win-win situation."
Alphonse's anger didn't abate entirely, but his curiosity got the better of him. He cautiously approached the portal, peering into the mysterious void pocket dimension Cadmus had conjured.
Cadmus grinned mischievously, gesturing toward the portal. "Go ahead, take a look, Dad. You'll see, it's quite a convenient solution. No mess, no fuss, just the bodies ready when we need them."
With a mix of skepticism and intrigue, Alphonse tentatively stepped closer to the portal, wondering if his son's unorthodox methods might just be the solution they needed to address the challenges of their grim environment.
Alphonse's frustration deepened, and he took a step back from the portal, letting Cadmus dismiss it. "You are utterly ridiculous, you know that, Cadmus? I have no idea where I went wrong. I granted you absolute freedom when you turned 13, in line with Dionysus's command. You joined a traveling carnival, honed your skills, and became a magnificent Bard. I thought you were following the right path, but no! You chose to align with a criminal underground and made pacts with a devil."
Cadmus shrugged, a defiant glint in his eyes. "I didn't sell my soul; I indentured my services to an elder god for unfathomable powers. It's entirely different. I still have a say in where my soul ends up, Dad." His nonchalant attitude clashed with Alphonse's deeply rooted beliefs, leaving them at an impasse.
Stan, the leader of their motley group of adventurers, chimed in, hoping to mediate the tense situation. "Al, just let it be. You'll only give yourself a headache. Cadmus, cut it out with the zombie talk. Both of you need to sort this out later; you're scaring the fish away," he remarked with a sigh of frustration as he reeled in yet another empty hook. "This town is cursed as it is, without the two of you causing a scene." Stan's words served as a reminder of the greater challenges they faced in their grim surroundings, urging Alphonse and Cadmus to set aside their differences for the time being.

shannon lynch and johnny kavanagh quotes in keeping 13
“I wasn't entirely sure how to navigate, but the feelings she evoked from me were addictive. Fuck addictive, I was obsessed with my girlfriend. I was in so deep with her that I could hardly breathe and still, I jumped in deeper, pushed down further, wanted more and took it, doing whatever I could to just be with her.”
“Oh God. This boy. My heart.”
“So, I'm your first first?" I asked sleepily.
"You're my everything."
Whoa.
"Night, Shan," he whispered.
I closed my eyes and grinned. "Night, Johnny.”
“She's going to be happy for you, Johnny," he replied. "Shannon loves you, lad. She's been in your corner since your surgery, willing you to get this shot.”
“So, will you come tonight?" Johnny asked, drawing my attention back to him. "Please? It would mean a lot to me."
"Okay," I whispered, forcing out the word when all I wanted was to say no and hide. "I'll come."
He turned to look at me and beamed. "Really?"
Oh god, that smile. "Really," I confirmed, heart racing. "If you're sure?"
"I'm sure," he replied, eyes blazing with heat.”
“Trembling, I squeezed his hand and sagged against his chest. "I'm sorry."
"Don't even say that," he whispered, wrapping me up in his arms.
"I smell like fish," I warned him. "You'll get it on your clothes, too."
"I don't care," he whispered, dropping a kiss to my hair. "I love fish, I love you, and I still want to eat you for dinner."
"Not as much as chicken," I sniffled.
"I fucking love chicken," he agreed with a chuckle. "Everything's okay, Shan." Stepping back, he cupped my face in his hands, and stared down at me. "Do you hear me?"
I shrugged weakly. "I hear you.”
“I love that girl. Like I really fucking love her, and I can't cope with knowing she's in that house right now. I lose sleep worrying about her.”
"Thank you," I croaked out, teeth chattering, as my heart thudded a rhythm of adoration for the boy standing in front of me. "For everything."
"I'd do anything for you, Shannon like the river," Johnny replied gruffly, pulling me into his side. "Anything."
I believed him, but I wished he didn't have to.”
“I walked over to the door only to hesitate and turn back. "Shan?"
She looked up at me with a lost expression. "Yeah, Johnny?"
"I love you."
Relief flashed in her big, blue eyes and she smiled back at me.”
“Why are you crying?"
"I'm not crying, baby." Sniffling, I wiped my eyes and moved to go to her, needing to hold her in my arms and just stop the world for a minute. My head was spinning, my heart was reeling, and I couldn't take it all in. Closing the space between us, I pulled her into my arms and squeezed her body tighter than I knew I should. "I love you," I whispered, holding her close”
“I held her even tighter. Right there on the floor of my kitchen, I cradled her in my arms, feeling every one of her sobs and cries in the deepest part of my soul. "Shh, little darling…"
"You're s-singing." Sniffling, she clung to my chest. "Here Comes the Sun."
I was singing. I was doing whatever I could to make this better for her.
"That's m-my Granda Murphy's s-song," she hiccupped. "You remember me t-telling you t-that?"
"Yeah." I remembered her telling me about her grandfather singing this song to her when she was frightened and it was all I could do in this moment. "Should I stop?"
"N-no." Shannon shook her head. "D-don't stop."
Trembling, I continued to rock her in my arms and softy hum the words of the song in her ear, while I waited for the doctor I knew had been called.”
“I miss you."
My heart cracked in my chest and my legs were moving before my brain had a chance to catch up. "I'm right here, Shan." Sitting down beside her, I resisted the urge to pull her onto my lap, settling on placing a hand on her bare knee instead. "I never left, babe. I was just trying to give you some space."
"I don't want any more space," she whispered, shifting closer. "I just want you."
"You have me," I croaked out, feeling my heart thump rapidly. "Always.”
“Hating you?" I shook my head. "Shannon, I love you. I'm fucking desperate to keep you here."
"But my brothers –"
"I want them to stay, too," I hurried to tell her. "I love little Sean – and Ollie? Christ, I even like Tadhg. He's a mouthy little fucker, but I understand him. And Joe? He just needs some help. Shite, even Darren's growing on me." Wiping a tear from her cheek with my thumb, I leaned closer. "I want all of you to stay with my family."
"But we're a lot of trouble," she whispered, sniffling.
"I like your trouble," I told her. "I want your trouble, and your complications, and everything else that comes with you." Leaning closer, I stroked my nose against hers. "I want you.”

Can we please have yandere Masky, Hoodie, and Toby, with an significant other that escaped just to go fishing in the forest. S/O sees them and waves at them like everything is fine.
Masky
"Where the FUCK did you get a fishing pole?!"
There was a little lake in the center of the forest you lived by. It was quite peaceful, and the mosquitos didn't bother you whenever you sat here
It gave you a sense of serenity while Masky was at work.
Not that he knew you found a way out to escape. But in honesty, it wasn't terrible living with him as long as you listened.
And when he let for work you got to escape into the forest nearby, or perhaps get some lunch in the nearest gas station.
(The same gas station you use for buying fishing bait, btw).
Masky's anger morphed into frustrated confusion. Masky doesn't own a fishing pole.
"I- uh- I found it? It was just laying- Okay, I see that you're angry!-"'
Masky advanced toward you, trapping you against the edge of the rock you perched on. He squatted down in front of you, piercing your soul with those crystalline blue eyes.
"I should fucking choke you out with that line."
You gulped, shifting nervously. Could you escape if you jumped? Is Masky a good swimmer?
Everything was going so smoothly recently, it was a shame to see him hostile like this again.
Masky fisted your hair, and dragged you back towards the bank, dismissing your thrashing and protests. "MY BAIT! I BOUGHT THAT!"
He threw you to the ground with astonish, and you know you'd feel that lump on your skull in the morning. "You-.... You went into the gas station?... And you didn't call for help?"
"Well, why would I?" You shrugged.
"..."
"You're stupider than I thought you were." And with that, Masky dragged you home, not caring about the damages the fishing line will do to the environment.
You're in for a world of pain once you get back home. Don't think your stupidity will go unpunished.
Hoodie
He knew you were gone the moment you stepped out of the house.
Thanks to your nifty new tracking anklet disguised as a beautiful silver chain, Hoodie knew exactly where you were at all times.
In fact, Hoodie followed you all the way to the lake. He was planning on surprising you with a very rough tackle to the ground, should you ever decide to turn around.
The fear on your face was to die for. Every. Single. Time.
Hoodie wanted to see it before dragging you home.
From a tree, Hoodie watched as you struggled to find bait in the nearby dirt next to the quaint spot you picked. He watched as you poked yourself trying to put it on. He watched as you almost fell asleep waiting for a bite.
He saw everything, just like he always does.
And when you were nodding off again, Hoodie kicked your spine with his Size 13 steel-toed work boots.
You gulped in gross, pond water before you could grasp your bearings.
"Get out. You're going home, or I'm going to give you something much worse than a light kick that involves that pretty face of yours."
It took great effort not to gag out the pond water as you crawled out through the mud and cattails.
"And once you're in your room, I'm leaving to find your accomplice. When I come back, you better still be in the same exact position or you're going to have a bad time for the rest of the month."
You gulped, nodding. The next time you'll shower is uncertain. But you hope he'll spare you some mercy, because the smell was already making you nauseated.
Or maybe it was the boot print stamped on your spine that was turning your stomach.
Toby
Oh, you silly goose! If you wanted to go outside, you could've told him!
Toby was enraged when he saw you missing. Did you escape? Were you kidnapped? Did you secretly run off with your new over?
His mind was racing before he even left the house!
But...you were just sitting peacefully on the bank of the lake, holding a fishing pole between your legs as you struggled to rip open some Goldfish snacks with your teeth.
Toby decided to stealthily sneak up on you, watching as you almost lost the pole when your teeth slipped past the plastic.
You attempted again, successfully tearing it open but spilling a few crackers for the frogs nearby to inspect suspiciously.
Toby watched you in silence, too focused for his tics to interrupt this serene moment.
He crept up behind you, footsteps silent, and leaned side to side to catch a glimpse over your shoulders. Your serene position was admired up close, and Toby couldn't help but smile at how cute you looked to him.
You simply tucked your feet under your thighs, criss-cross, and adjusted your reel a little bit.
You looked so peaceful.
Without Toby.
Toby doesn't like this anymore.
His face drops into a scowl, and the rage he felt previously resurfaced into a bubbling, boiling frustration and betrayal.
When he grabbed the back of your collar, you gagged when it snapped against your throat.
"Where were you?!" He cried out desperately. The brunette was towering over you and you had nowhere to run that Toby wouldn't immediately catch you.
You weren't given time to answer, you were pulled roughly against Toby's body. He buried his face against your hair, sniffling as he mumbled incoherently.
"Oh [Y/N], [Y/N], [Y/N]....Please don't ever leave me again, I was so scared."
"I know.."
"So scared, so scared... C'mon, I'll take you back home. L-Let's go." You knew Toby would quadruple check the locks next time. So long to your peace of mind.

| Something In The Water |
The journey to the ocean wasn’t a particularly long one, made even shorter by the Piglins fascination on the story told not twenty minuets ago. He had heard tales of mermaids before, sirens more often. Hell his favourite books at the moment were about the adventures of a mermaid in a war torn world. But the idea of them being real always seemed to escape him. He shouldn’t be much surprised, seeing as he closest companion is immortal, and his tenant is an enderman hybrid. He guessed the thought never crossed his mind, in his defense most of the stories he had been told of mermaids were from sea crazed or drunk sailors, sometimes even both.
Pulled from his thoughts by a grunt from Steve he became more aware of his surroundings. They had quite quickly reached the cliff side over hanging the ocean. Not the best place to fish but he didn’t have a lot of time to be fishing, he had merchants to be rip off, and more totems to gather. His movements were smooth as he fixed the hook to the rod and speared a bit of fish onto the end of it. He wasn’t very good at fishing, but being good friends with Phil he knew enough to hurt himself. Most likely.
He was quick to cast the line into the water, watching the tackle sway with the gentle tides of the ocean. In and out, in and out, in and out. It would have been real relaxing, even the voices had quieted down a bit, but he soon grew bored of the repetitive motion. Soon enough his eyes drifted from the bobber to the rocks the water lapped around, splashing up and polishing them a dark grey. Technoblade was quick to spot a few snails making their way across the surfaces of the rocks beneath foot, a few making their way to the small tide pool like grove further under the cliff face. It was a beautiful scene, if it hadn’t been for such grey gloomy weather.
A quick tug was enough to draw his eyes back to the tackle, which had now been pulled under the surface of the water. In the foamy waters it was easy to see the dark grey, nearly back body of the fish among the lighter rocks. It was big too, what ever it was, certainly on or two of these would be enough to hold Steve over until they got back to the cabin. Reeling in the fish was less pleasant then expected, by no means was the fish stronger then him, the piglin was certain he could pull the fish out of the ocean with his own two hands given the chance. But the handle of the reel was not made for four fingers, let alone four fingers that were made of nail.
As quickly as it came the fish had gotten away, as the tugging suddenly stopped and all he could do was watch as the shadowy figure of the fish swam away. A few frustrated curses slipped past his lips as he slowly reeled the hook back in, having to take several moments repositioning his hands. Quickly however he realized that this pole was not made for him, and no matter how much he practiced with the tool it was unlikely to work.
He wasn't left alone long however as a rather gruff voice caught his attention. "Oi! Wadda ya doin' out 'ere? Rather far from the village o' blood god." Letting out a confused ' heh ' he turned quickly the piglins eyes quickly focused on the two men not to far behind him. Dressed in thick, warm coats and large seal skin boats Techno was quick to recognize the dress. They were fishermen.
Giving a curt not the piglin rose to his hooves, catching the attention of Steve who followed suit. "I thought fishermen didn't come to these coasts anymore" he thought aloud, his ears twitching as one of the men, one with a rather thick beard, laughed. "Don't tell me you're listenin' ta town rumours now? Say ya lookin' inta fishin' ?" The man questioned gesturing with a gloved hand to the fishing pole in the piglins hand.
"Not for long hopefully, the fishers all out" Techno blade explained, relaxing as he grew to realize these men were certainly no threat. " Course they are! With that beast of yours it's no surprise" the thinner man chuckled, scratching at his stubble ridden chin in thought. "Say, for a coin we'd be 'appy 'elp ya catch a few" he offered with a shrug of his shoulders.
Knowing full well he wouldn't be able to catch half the fish these gentlemen would be able to he let out a defeated sigh. Dragging his hand down the length of his face he nodded along. "I'll bite. A gold coin each."
The men clearly perked up a bit, a small grin on the first mans face as he nodded along. "We'll be sure ta make sure it's worth it! Come with us, we'll show you the good spots to fish" He hummed. His hopes of leaving the sea men to their work was soon crushed as they began to lead him off. Blood god or not he wasn’t a very social man, and it showed as he awkwardly began to clamber after the two, tugging at the reins of Steve’s harness as he walked.
Technoblade wasn’t entirely sure why he was even following the men, he was awkward sure but the an certainly knew how to make an exit. As usual his poor choices seemed to follow his curiosity. Certainly the fishermen would know of the sea witch or siren, they seemed to think of the idea as a joke. But joke or not a story is a story, and he wouldn’t have much to do that day as Phil was making dinner. Letting out a sharp breath his ears perked as a splashing caught his attention. Casting a glance down the cliff side into the water nothing but the tide seemed to be moving.
A head of them was a hill, whatever was making that noise had to be over it, meaning what ever was making the noise had to be large. The fishermen seemed to connect the same dots as he did as the bearded one turned to the other.
 “Someone else out ‘ere?”
 “No one besides Scotty”
“Whatever he’s got must be big, eh?”
The bearded man let out a little chuckle, the two picking up pace as they made their way up the hill. Technoblade didn’t put to much effort into catching up, knowing he wouldn’t lose them, and Steve didn’t look like he would be speeding up either. It wasn’t long until they disappeared over the crest of the hill, Technoblade wouldn’t have taken any notice if a holler hadn’t quickly followed.
“Scotty what the hell ‘re ya doin’?!”

Summary: This is just my rewrite of the show Outer Banks with my own twist by adding another main character which also happens to be John B’s twin sister.
Note: Hey guys! Thank you so much for the support of my last couple of fics. All your messages have been so kind and so sweet! I’ve made a rewrite of the show with a new character that eventually falls in love with her best friend. I’m gonna be posting a new chapter three times a week. Let me know what you guys think!
Word Count: 4.3k
Warnings: None
Chapter 2
Tumblr media
"That's what, a three-story fall to the deck?" John B tip toes across the middle of the roof as he sips out of the can of beer in his hand.
I lean to my right, pressing against JJ's shoulder as we sit on a construction slack used to hold construction workers as they work on the siding of the home. Scaffolding, I think it's called. I narrow my eyes at my brother, counting down the seconds until he falls.
"I give you about a one-in-three chance of survival," Pope jokes from the deck below us.
John B shrugs. He licks his finger and holds it up in the air as if he's feeling which way the wind is blowing. "Hm. Should I do it?"
"Yeah, jump." Pope holds up a power drill and points it at John B like it's a gun. "I'll shoot you on the way down."
"You'll shoot me?"
"Yep." Pope closes one eye and pretends to shoot it. "Pow!"
I roll my eyes and look forward again, letting the beer slip down my throat like a refreshing glass of water. The warm North Carolina air presses soothingly against my freshly tan skin and I bask in the sunlight. Its days like these that I like the most. Days where none of my best friends have work, we're drinking causally, and joking with one another. Even if it's on a construction site in the middle of Figure Eight. But the idea of getting caught just gives me an adrenaline rush.
"They're gonna have Japanese toilets with towel warmers," Kie says as she walks out of the unfinished house.
"Of course. Why wouldn't they?" JJ says next to me with a shrug like it's not the craziest thing that a Kook would own.
"This used to be a turtle habitat, but who cares about the turtles, I guess."
"I can't have cold towels."
Kie looks up at John B, shielding her eyes with the back of her hand. "Can you please not kill yourself?"
"Don't spill the beer. I'm not giving you another one," JJ says.
As if on cue, John B's foot slips. Luckily he catches himself, but his beer, however, drops to it's death on the deck below. As John B steadies himself I release the breath I didn't even know I was holding. I take another greedy gulp of my warm beer to steady the nerves in my chest.
"Whoa! Oh, shit," John B curses.
"Of course you did," JJ rolls his eyes playfully. "Smooth."
"A plus, really." I glare up at my brother, feeling his mischievous smirk right back at me.
"Dumbass," Kie mutters under her breath. She looks up at me as if waiting for me to say something, but I only giggle to myself. John B can be clumsy but he's not going to accidentally kill himself.
"Hey!" I hear another voice shout behind us towards the street and front of the house. A voice that doesn't belong to any of my friends or my brother.
"Hey, uh, security's here," Pope says.
Immediately knowing what that means, I jump to my feet with the help of JJ right after he slugs the rest of his beer. A delirious grin dances along my lips as I hop down to the main deck.
"Let's wrap it up!"
"Boys are early today."
"Humpty Dumpty, let's roll!"
My legs take off after my friends through the house. Adrenaline rushes through my veins and straight to my head like a power high. I can't even feel my legs as they jump over wooden slacks and construction tools. The high from running from the police is better than any drug JJ can get his hands on, even the good stuff.
"Gary is that you?" JJ plays along before accidentally running into him, making him slip on his feet before running the other way. I grab his wrist and pull him closer to me to catch up. "Gary, good to see you man!"
I laugh as my feet land on the freshly cut grass in the front yard. "You're asking for it."
"JJ!" The obese cop chases after us, recognizing my best friend's face instantly. I'm not surprised, not even a little bit. JJ had his fair share of run-ins with the law.
"They're going out front!" I hear another cop shout. I can barley hear through the wind rushing through my ears.
We run into a tall white painted fence that blocks us from our car, better known as the Twinkie. Hopping fences is something I've learned to become better at after doing it so many times. However, I can't say the same about Pope. He's always struggled.
I swing my legs over the fence and land with a small 'oomf.' I look over my shoulder for my slow-poke friend and see him falling over the fence, landing on his side. I laugh as I pick him up by the shoulders.
JJ is waiting for us, clapping his hands like a coach on the sidelines at a football game because his players aren't running fast enough. But there's a smile on his face. "Get up, Pope, fatso's coming!"
"Hey!" The guard shouts behind me. He's halfway up the other side of the fence, but he doesn't have the strength to pull himself over completely. "Come here you little pricks!"
I hear the familiar honk coming from the van John B and I learned to drive in. My brother and Kie are waiting for us in the front seats of the Volkswagen van that would look better in the 70s than the 2020's but I love it. It fits our friend group perfectly. Plus I'd choose this car over any fancy Mercedes Tourons usually drive. The only time I've ever been in one of them is when I snuck off with a golf player from Georgia after a boneyard party. It was luxurious of course, but nothing like the Twinkie.
"Bus is leaving!" John B says as we get closer.
"Come on!" Kie yells at us from the passenger seat, banging the flat of her palm against the door.
I dive through the back first, landing on my elbows and rolling over. Pope and JJ follow less than a second later.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Gary calls after us as John B steps on the gas.
JJ leans out of the sliding side door that's still wide open. I lay on my back watching him as I try to catch my breath. His smile is contagious. For a boy who's been through hell and back, he smiles a lot, and I love every second of it.
He holds out his beer can as if he's offering it to the cop who's still trying to catch us...if he can catch up to it. "Check out Gary, gunnin' for a raise. Come on, Gary!"
"Wait. Slow down. Hey! You little pricks! Hey!"
"You're gonna give him a heart attack!" Kie tries to scold him but she can't fight the smile on her lips either as she watches from the side rearview mirror.
"You're so close! You can do it. There you go. They don't pay you enough bro."
"JJ, stop. Stop!" Kie says through her laughter.
I love Kie. She always tries to keep the peace between her friends and the world itself. Always the girl who raises money for charities that protect this Earth and save animals and solve world hunger. She's going to change the world someday. Her and Pope. Maybe if they can tolerate each other, they'll do it side by side.
JJ slumps back into the van with a toothy grin. He sits next to me and pulls me up so I'm sitting up straight. He dangles his arm around my shoulder and I lean further into his side. If I could choose one position to be in for the rest of my life it would be this one.
But I'd never admit that.
"Oh, come on. That sort of initiative is just begging to be punished," JJ says.
I hum in response and lean back into the seat behind me and stare out the window. A view of passing vibrant green leaves takes over the window as John B drives. The scene comforts me. Summer is my favorite season. No school. Just work and friends and the Outer Banks. Paradise on Earth, some may call it.
It's the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses. Two tribes, one island. We're currently driving through Figure Eight, the rich side of the island. Home of the Kooks. So, guess where we don't live.
As John B drives further South, the houses get smaller and smaller, feeling more like home. This is the South side. Or as we like to call it, the Cut. Home of the working class who make a living bussing tables, washing yachts, running charters. The natural habitat of...drumroll, please...the Pogues. That's us. Pogues, pogies, the throwaway fish. Lowest members of the food chain.
I know... a little harsh, don't you think?
So, the downside of the Pogue life is we're ignored and neglected. But the upside of the Pogue life? We're ignored and neglected, which means we do whatever we want, whenever we want.
The second John B parks the car, the boys are gathering all their fishing gear and we set off to our next destination. The marina.
"Nice haul, dude. Look at that!" JJ teases my brother when he reels in what I think is the smallest fish I've ever seen. If it was orange, I would have thought it was my old pet goldfish from when I was six. "Been all bait for, like, three weeks."
John B pulls the fish off his hook and tosses it in JJ's direction. JJ flinches back, knocking into me and almost throwing me into the water below. That was probably my fault, though. I shouldn't be sitting on an open ledge, dangling my legs twenty feet above the water.
"Watch it, idiot!" I smack JJ upside the head after letting go of the death grip I had on his bicep when I was about to fall to my death. Well...I'd probably survive, but it would hurt like hell.
"It's not my fault you chose the most dangerous seat!" JJ retaliates.
Yeah, that's JJ. John B's best friend since the third grade, which subsequently makes him my best friend since the third grade too. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, drinking, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living off the water. Second best surfer I know. First being me of course. Mild kleptomaniac and a future tax cheat.
"Yeah, Mar, you should really get down from there," Kie says, walking over to me to help me down. I decide not to put up a fight. If I'm going to break my leg, I'm gonna do it in a surfing accident or something cool, not by falling off the dock.
Kiara. Or Kie as we call her. When not saving turtles or listening to Bob Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with us. I'm not really sure why though. She's a rich kid, actually. Her family owns the Wreck, this Outer Banks institution. Total cash down with the tourists and my current job. You know, I'm not really sure how her parents feel about us. But they like me enough to bring them money towards their restaurant. I bring in a lot of regulars. Advertising is kind of my thing. I'm pretty sure all my friends, even my brother, have a thing for her.
Kie hands me a water bottle and lays her legs across my lap. She lies down on the wooden bench and bathes in the sunlight the day still has to offer. Kie is my best friend. Best secret holder known to man, for the most part.
"I think she needs a leash," Pope adds, making me pass him a glare.
"The only thing useful about a leash is how I can strangle you with it," I say.
"Kinky," JJ says and winks at me. "That's my girl."
John B slaps JJ upside the back of his head.
I'm lucky my sunburnt skin is hiding the blush that creeps along my cheeks.
Pope glares at both JJ and I which only makes my growing smirk widen.
Pope...the brains of the operation...finalist for the Lucas T. Vanderhorst Merit Scholarship. And the smartest person I know. Little bit of a weirdo. His father's this legendary character, Heyward. Anything you wanted on the island, Heyward could get for you. Now, I'm not sure Heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn't matter. He was a Pogue, just like the rest of us.
"Trust me, if a leash was that easy, I would have tried a long time ago," John B mutters with a hint of a smile.
John Booker Routledge. My insufferable twin brother. Pain in my ass. Number one partner in crime. I hate him but I love him. Pretty much like any sibling relationship. We live in an old fish shack on the marsh. The Chateau as my dad use to call it. My dad disappeared at sea nine months ago looking for a shipwreck. I mean seriously, who disappears at sea these days? I miss him a lot. He may have been a little neglectful, but he took care of us the best that he could. My mom, however? She split when I was three. Last I heard she was in Colorado. At least I think it was Colorado. Honestly who knows and who cares.
Since my dad vanished, my Uncle T is supposedly my legal guardian. At the moment, he's in Mississippi, building houses which means it's just me right now, on my own, hangin' out with my brother and my friends.
Three months after my dad went missing, he was officially presumed dead. John B is more of an optimist than I am. He refuses to sign the paper and until he sees a dead body, he's not giving up. I back John B's decision, but I'm more realistic about what happened to my dad. The ocean, although my favorite place to be, is also one of the scariest.
My dad is probably dead and I will never get the closure that I want. So I'm dealing with it the best way I can, although I'm pretty sure everyone is a little worried about me, especially Kie now that John B is starting to follow in my footsteps by exhibiting reckless behavior.
But I'm getting better now. Day by Day. At least I wasn't acting like I did when my dad first left us.
                                                     ~ ~ ~
I woke up with a slap to my ankle and my head buried deep into my pillow. I groan from the abrupt living alarm clock that's now pacing my room and throwing clothes from my closet at me. It only makes me squeeze my eyes tighter in hopes for at least five more minutes of sleep.
"Seriously, Mar, we need to go. We're late." John B rips my blanket off my body, leaving me exposed in just my pajama boxer shorts and a tank top. The sudden chill sends goosebumps up my arms and legs.
"Go without me." I push myself up on my elbows and grab the clothes he threw at me. I knew meeting the social worker alone wasn't an option. Even if one of us goes to this stupid meeting, it will prove to the social worker that we're not being responsible enough to keep DCS off our backs. As far as they know, Uncle T is still living with us and keeping us safe.
"You have five minutes." John B ignores me and leaves my room, slamming my door shut.
I roll my eyes and tumble out of my soft bed. I slip on my jeans shorts and a white t shirt that I tie in a knot to make it a crop top. Underneath it I have on my plain black bikini, knowing that I will be surfing the second we get home. The News has been reporting a storm for weeks that's suppose to hit tonight. Vicious waves and crazy winds sends a thrill through my body.
We arrive to the social worker's office only two minutes late. I thought that was a sign of responsibility, but the social worker only looks at us with distaste as we sit in the two chairs in front of her desk.
"John, Marleigh, it's come to our attention that you two are unemancipated minors living on your own." Her hair is pulled back into a tight low bun and her glasses are perched on the tip of her nose. Her suit looks way too tight for comfort, like it's squeezing the life out of her.
John B scoffs and leans back into his seat as if we have nothing to worry about, but I know his heart is beating just as wildly as mine. "No....no." The social worker raises one brow in suspicion and glances in my direction to either confirm or deny what John B is saying. John B sees this and answers for me. "No."
I just shrug as a response, which only makes the social worker more weary. She leans into her desk and folds her hands on top of our folders that are piled in the middle. "I need honesty to help you. That's what we want, right?"
"Yeah. I'm being honest."
"Okay, then when is the last time you spoke to your uncle?"
John B looks down at his watch and purses his lips. "Uh...thirty-four minutes ago."
"When's the last time you saw him?"
"Two hours and...forty-three minutes ago?"
I hold myself back from rolling my eyes. It's clear on the social worker's face that she's not buying into any of John B's lies.
She sighs and turns to look at me. "We're gonna come out there tomorrow to talk to your uncle. If he's not there, we're gonna move forward with foster care." Foster care. The words make me dig my nails into the wood of the arms of the chair I'm in. The last place I ever wanna be is in foster care. I want to stay here on the island with my brother and our friends. Not with some random family who couldn't care less about us in a place I'm not familiar with. "I want to assure you, we're gonna find you a safe and loving home."
She says it like she's offering us a better life, one that we would want, one that sounds like the better option but it isn't. I ignore the worried look John B sends my way and watch the seconds go by on the clock above the door. We basically have twenty-four hours to find Uncle T or someone to be pretend to be him.
                                                  ~ ~ ~
The winds begin picking up early in the afternoon, the rain hitting by 5. On my way home from working at the Wreck, I watch people board up the windows of their stores and homes. All John B and I can do is hope that our little shack won't blow away by morning.
Unfortunately for Pope, he's at our house when John B catches me leaving the house with my board. When he tells me to stop, I'm prepared to put up a fight. I've been looking forward to surfing in this storm all day - something I can use to push the DCS lady out of my head and the promise she made that sounded more like a threat.
"You think you were gonna go out without me?" John B smirks and leads the way to the beach.
Pope follows behind us like a lost puppy, basically talking to himself as he tries to convince us that this is a bad idea. We stop at the edge of the beach. It's almost impossible to see the ocean through the wind and the rain.
"Those aren't surfable waves, bro," Pope says, squinting through the rain that splatters our faces wet.
"Says who?" I say, passing him a devious smirk and make a run for it towards the ocean.
I paddle past the choppy waves, letting the water knock me around like a feather in the wind. When I see a decent looking wave to ride, I prop myself up on my feet and stand. I lean into my board. The warmth that's taken over my body outruns the cold water I fall into when the waves crash over me. My body tumbles under the water and my board bumps against me. I try to swim back up to the surface but the current is strong. I don't know where I am and I can't see under the water. My nose burns when water rushes up my nostrils. I squeeze my eyes tight and just swim upwards in hope of reaching air. Maybe this was a bad idea, but the thrill is still keeping me excited.
I finally reach the surface after what feels like years. John B and Pope's screams are dull against the whistling wind. I hop back on my board and give the two guys a thumbs up and a wicked smile. Pope looks like he's about ready to have a heart attack and John B breathes out a sigh of relief as he paddles closer to me.
"You alright?" He asks me.
"Fine," I yell against the wind.
John B nods. He looks like he's about to say something else, but something over my shoulder catches his attention. I turn myself around, intrigued at what's he's seeing other than the water, clouds, and a bunch of rain. Then I see it. A boat that barely looks afloat, so far out that it looks like a speck against the rain.
"We should probably go," I say. I don't want John B's mind to run to what might have happened to Dad out there. Maybe he was caught by a storm like this, maybe his boat went overboard and his body is out there floating with the fishes. I don't know. The last thing I need him to do right now is speculate. Even if the same thoughts are running through my head, John B thinks he's still alive. These thoughts will keep him up all night. He doesn't move, however. "John B let's go."
                                                  ~ ~ ~
JJ is already laying on the pull out bed in my living room when I get out of the shower. JJ crashes here most days of the week. He'd much rather be here than with his drunk abusive dad. Our friends don't know the extent of how shitty his relationship really is with his dad. But I do. I found out when I was thirteen. JJ snuck through my bedroom window after a tough night with his dad. His face and torso were covered in bruises. It took everything in me not to burst out in tears right then and there. But for some reason, he trusted me of all people with his biggest secret. I cleaned him up and let him sleep in my bed with me. Every once in a while we repeat the process. Sometimes he's not even hurt, he just shows up. And I let him in because I like having him there.
I fall onto the mattress next to him and prop my head up on my hand, leaning on my elbow. I run my fingers through his hair, feeling satisfied and bubbly when he moans in response.
"When did you get here?" I ask him.
"You were in the shower. Don't worry I didn't peak, but I was tempted," He says into his pillow.
I use the same hand I had woven in his hair and punch his shoulder playfully, making him fall on his back. His lips turn up in a grin.
I lay there for a second, looking up at the ceiling. My eyes feel heavy, the events of the day officially taking over my body. I peek an eye over at JJ who's watching me carefully as if I might break under his fingertips.
"What?" I grin to myself, thankful for the darkness so he couldn't see the blush on my cheeks. Again.
"You all right?" He asks, pushing my hair out of my face so he can look straight into my eyes.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
JJ hesitates, like he's trying to pick the right words to say. I watch him closely, studying every mark and crevice on his face. Beautiful and clear like always. Even when it's covered in bruises and blemishes, he's handsome. I could look at him all day.
"You hate storms," He says.
"I can sleep through anything," I tell him. "And I don't hate storms. They make for...eventful surfing days."
His face drops to a more serious one. "You know what I mean."
I do. Storms have never really frightened me. Not really. But ever since my dad disappeared nine months ago, I worried that he would get caught in a storm like this, that by morning there would be a knock on my door from an officer who would tell me that a dead body has washed up on shore and they ID'd him as my father. The image leaves me with nightmares on nights like tonight.
JJ's the only one who knows this.
I don't like talking about it. Like JJ, we have this in common. So instead of telling him I'm fine and him not believing me, I pull the blanket at the edge of the mattress over our bodies and tuck myself into his side, laying my head on his shoulder. A position so intimate for just us "friends." I hope he can't feel my heart pounding beneath my skin, against his side. I let my body soften against his, feeling sleep take over me. I fall into a dreamless sleep next to JJ, hoping that the storm will be gone by the time we wake up.

that's the kind of love i've been dreaming of
Has Beca mentioned that she hates his guts? Everything is just too… annoyingly nice. His charming smile, his messy but not too messy hair, his sense of humor, and well, his taste in women, as he’s dating the girl Beca happens to be in love with.

The muffled giggle greeting Beca when she steps through the door makes her groan. The deep voice that follows confirms that Chloe is indeed not alone, and Beca briefly considers turning around and… going for a walk or something.
But her feet are about to fall off, she feels gross from her overcrowded subway ride home where she’s pretty sure a dude sniffed her hair, and she is really fucking tired.
She’s just flopped down face first on the pull-out couch when the door to Chloe’s bedroom opens, and two sets of feet grow closer.
“You alright, Becs?”
Beca grunts something inaudible in acknowledgment before she rolls on her back. “M’fine.”
“Hey Beca,” Chicago greets her with a soft smile, and Beca somehow manages to leash in her sneer.
“Hey,” she mumbles, the best she can muster when it comes to Chloe’s boyfriend.
Has she mentioned that she hates his guts? Everything is just too… annoyingly nice. His charming smile, his messy but not too messy hair, his sense of humor, and well, his taste in women, as he’s dating the girl Beca happens to be in love with.
Yep. It’s only been four years and a half; not a big deal.
She was this close to admitting her feelings to Chloe, still reeling with adrenaline after her solo performance, when Chloe ran to Army Boy instead. Beca doesn’t think she knew what a broken heart felt like until that very moment.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” Chicago asks, setting his hands on Chloe’s hips.
“Yeah,” Chloe agrees and leans up to kiss his lips. Beca rolls her eyes, grabbing her phone from her back pocket as a distraction from the display of gag-worthy affection.
The door finally clicks shut behind Chicago, and Beca hears Chloe sigh. That kind of content sigh that has jealousy flare up within her because Chloe should be sighing like that because of her.
“I thought he was leaving tomorrow morning?” Beca asks as she scrolls through her Instagram, not really registering the photos zooming past her eyes.
“Not anymore,” Chloe says, biting on her bottom lip like she’s trying to prevent a smile from breaking through. “He’s um, going to be stationed in Brooklyn. His request just got granted.”
A huge lump forms in Beca’s throat as she registers the news and an uneasy feeling seized her stomach. “That’s--” she swallows with difficulty, swiping her tongue over her dry lips. “That’s great, Chlo.”
She soon exits Instagram, opening her safari to look for apartment listings.
*
Finding an apartment in New York City within her price range, as it turns out, is pretty fucking difficult.
You would think Beca was aware of that given the fact that there used to be one more person living in her current studio, with a simple curtain acting as bathroom walls.
(she definitely has PTSD from that night Amy had food poisoning from Taco Bell.)
When Amy moved out, Chloe took her room, because Beca is the night owl of the two, usually coming home late from work or cooking dinner after Chloe has gone to bed.
It’s pushing eleven by the time she makes it back that night, and she prays that Chloe is already in bed. The past couple of weeks following the news have been… weird, to say the least. Beca has been avoiding Chloe, coming up with excuses whenever Chloe asks her if she wants to hang out.
She makes herself a quick dinner (okay, makes might be a bit of an overstatement: she just pours some hot water over instant noodles. Don’t come at her.) and messes around on her laptop for a while, turning the lights off just after one am.
A moan reaching her ears just as she feels herself dozing off has her eyes fly open. A moan that very much belongs to Chloe, and Beca just wants to disappear off the face of the earth. Quiet laughter follows, and when the bed starts squeaking, leaving no doubt regarding what they’re doing in there, Beca ponders smothering herself with her own pillow.
She grabs her headphones instead, hastily placing them over her ears before she hears something that will most likely scar her forever. It somewhat cancels out the sounds, enough for Beca to fall asleep. She flees the apartment before either of them is awake, drowning her sorrows in a double espresso from the corner coffee shop.
Over the next few days, she excels in avoiding Chloe. She knows Chloe’s schedule well enough to come back when she’s either asleep or not there. Or at least she thought so.
“Hey.”
Beca freezes as she closes the door, looking over her shoulder to find Chloe popping her head out of the fridge.
Beca clears her throat, rubbing her nose with her knuckle as she stares down at the scuff of her shoes. “Hey,” she echoes, setting her keys down on the counter.
“Long time no see,” Chloe says as Beca sits on the edge of her bed to take her boots off.
“Yeah um, I’ve been busy,” Beca mumbles as she undoes her laces.
“Busy avoiding me?”
Beca’s spine snaps straighter at that, and she looks up to meet Chloe’s eyes. “No, just--” her shoulder lifts in a half shrug. “I figured you and Chicago might enjoy some private time together.”
Chloe hums like she doesn’t believe her. “You’d tell me if-- if something was bothering you, right? I feel like I’ve done something wrong.”
Beca swallows. “It’s not you, Chlo. I’m just--” she sighs, feeling her frustration rise as she scrapes her brain for a believable lie. “Work sucks and I feel like I’m getting nowhere, so I’ve been crankier than usual.”
Chloe nods, her lips curving in a sympathetic smile. “I’m sorry you’re having a hard time at work,” she says. “We should go out tonight! It’s been forever.”
Beca’s rebuttal lies on the tip of her tongue, out of reflex. She swallows it back, because Chloe is giving her those puppy eyes she’s mastered so well, and Beca knows damn well she can’t resist. Besides, she could definitely use a drink. Or ten.
“Yeah, okay. Sure.”
That’s how they find themselves in an overly too loud, busy club a handful of hours later. Beca is definitely tipsy, and Chloe has just ordered shots, so she knows she’s likely to finish the night with her head in the toilet. But she hasn’t laughed like that in a while, and it feels amazing to be… Beca and Chloe again.
It’s ruined just after Beca downs her first shot, when Army Boy shows up.
“Hi!” Chloe exclaims, springing up from her stool to hug him.
Beca grits her teeth so hard that she’s half-concerned they might break, her eyes throwing daggers at Chicago’s head.
“Hey Beca,” he says, apparently oblivious as he slides on the vacant stool.
Beca simply tilts her chin towards him, along with a tight-lipped smile. As Chicago orders his drink with the waitress, Beca shrugs her jacket on. “I’m gonna go,” she announces over the music, not caring one bit that it’s obvious as to why.
She doesn’t wait for a reply, letting her legs carry her towards the exit as quickly as possible as tears burn her eyes. She bumps into someone in her haste and mumbles a disoriented sorry, sucking in a much needed breath as soon as she steps outside of the club.
The music gradually fades away as she starts down the sidewalk, tugging her jacket tighter around her frame when a chill rolls down her spine. She’s not even sure in which direction she’s going, set on hailing the first cab she finds.
“What the hell is your problem??”
Beca freezes at the familiar voice, swallowing around the forming lump in her throat before she turns around. She barely meets Chloe’s eyes. “I’m just tired, Chlo.”
“Bullshit,” Chloe spits out, a scoff flying past her lips as she shakes her head. Her typically warm eyes are bone-chilling icy. “You left the second he got here.”
Beca sighs heavily, her hands forming fists by her sides in an attempt to tame her growing irritation. “Yeah well, maybe I didn’t feel like being the third wheel. I thought it was just going to be you and I, tonight. But you two have been attached to the hip and all you can talk about is Chicago this, Chicago that.”
“Well I’m sorry if I enjoy his company,” Chloe fires back. “You know, the least you could do is be happy for me.”
“Oh great, the guilty card,” Beca says, eyes rolling skyward. She sucks in a sharp breath. “I can’t be happy for you, Chlo.”
Chloe staggers back as though Beca’s words slapped her in the face. “What?”
“I said, I can’t be happy for you,” Beca repeats, her tone rising along with her frustration.
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Chloe asks, a mixture of anger, hurt and confusion surfacing in her features. “Why can’t you be happy for me? That’s what best friends are supposed to do, you know. I mean, are you even still my best friend? Because you haven’t been acting like one those past--”
“Because I’m in love with you, dumbass!” Beca finally blurts, a lot louder than necessary. Her declaration catches the attention of a few bypassers, but Beca is too focused on Chloe to care.
She watches as realization dawns in Chloe’s eyes, and all she can hear is her heart beating madly in her ears. She swallows, glancing down at the crack in the sidewalk. “And I’m the biggest idiot in the world,” she mumbles, roughly wiping at her cheeks when she feels a few tears rolling down her skin. “I’ll be out of the apartment by tomorrow.”
Beca is thankful Chloe doesn’t follow her when she turns around and resumes her journey home. She ends up walking all the way, too embarrassed to break down in a cab like in those stupid rom-coms. She texts Amy when she makes it back to ask if she can crash at her fancy apartment, fishing out her suitcase as soon as her friend agrees. Tears keep leaking out, and Beca wipes them away with her sleeve before she starts shoving her clothes into the suitcase, trying to ignore the way her heart aches.
A key slides into the lock just as she’s done packing. Beca straightens and hastily wipes her cheeks dry, even though she knows her bloodshot eyes will betray her.
“You’re really leaving,” Chloe murmurs, her voice barely audible.
Beca sniffles as she heaves her suitcase off the bed and sets it down. “Yep.”
“Why?”
Beca bites back a humorless laugh. “I don’t know, maybe because I’m not a masochist?” She deadpans. “Seeing you and Chicago together isn’t exactly fun.”
“We broke up.”
Beca’s breathing halts as she registers the words. Her jaw slacks. “What?”
Chloe clears her throat a little, taking a step closer. She’s fiddling with her keys, something she does when she gets shy, nervous or nervous, or excited. “Well, I broke up with him.”
“You did?” Beca croaks out.
Chloe nods, the corners of her lips upturning in a sheepish smile. “Because it’s always been you, dumbass.”
Beca’s lungs flood with oxygen, and her shoulders slump, releasing the tension at once. “Oh.”
“Oh?” Chloe echoes, raising an eyebrow as she takes another step.
Beca closes her eyes briefly, her head tilting as she frowns. “Sorry, I think my brain needs to be re-booted. Could you um, could you say that again?”
Chloe chuckles, finally closing the remaining distance between them. She cups Beca’s cheek and joins their lips in a soft, lingering kiss. Beca’s knees quake as a bunch of butterflies release in her belly, and she can’t quite believe this is really happening.
She licks her tingling lips when Chloe pulls away, feeling a bit dizzy. “Um, I’m not sure I quite got that one, either. Care for an encore?”
The first of many, many ones.

Mythomaniac—childhood best friend!haechan x female reader.
summary: he’s your best friend, he’s always been. but sometimes you have to stop gazing through those rose colored lenses to see donghyuck for who he really is; a liar.  warnings: recreational drug use, language, hyuck being an asshole maybe, depictions of a toxic relationship, peer pressure, happy ending? what’s that genres: childhood best friends to almost lovers (?), angst, fluff if you squint, coming of age word count: 10.5k author’s message: big thank you @yongiefilms and @gardenpebble for proofreading this and giving me the confidence to post this. this has been a work in progress for a long time, and i hope you all enjoy it!  this story is inspired by the songs, “liar” by leon and “i swear i’ll never leave again” by keshi. i would recommend listening to these!
-
The first time Lee Donghyuck lies to you, you’re both eight years old and fighting over the playground swing.
It’s your turn, you argue, kicking the floor as tears well in your eyes. Recess is over in five minutes and you’ve been waiting for Juna to get off since it started! But then this random dark-haired boy suddenly shows up and is going to take it away from you.
“It’s my turn!” You screech again, on the edge of a temper tantrum.
Your shrill tone causes Donghyuck to wince, and being much more mannered than you, he sighs in defeat. “Fine, fine. I’ll push you. Tomorrow, you push me. Okay?”
Sniffling, you nod and make your way onto the swing. When you jump up and land your bottom on the seat, your toes barely brush the ground. You grasp tightly onto the swing, looking over your shoulder at the boy who’s disappeared behind you. “Not too hard, okay? Not too high.”
“I won’t push too hard.” You’re still unconvinced.
“Promise?”
His response comes out as smooth as honey. “Promise.” His hands are already on your back, pushing you forward ever so lightly. It’s okay at first, and a bright smile spreads across your lips as you register the breeze fanning across your face.
A boisterous laugh leaves your lips, like sparkling stars in the dark of the night. For a moment your small childish world is overrun by excitement and enjoyment; the only thing that exists in this moment is you and the swing. From the height you’re at you can almost see the whole playground.
Wait—the whole playground? Were you already up this high?
When you reach the highest peak of your pendulum you look down, and your eyes widen at the distance from the ground that you are. Your bright laugh now turns into a terrified shriek. “Too high! Too high! Let me down!”
Donghyuck is, at first, unaware of just how frightened you are, but when you start flailing around in fear, his eyes widen. It all happens so fast. You swing back and forth a few times but your limbs are flying around so impulsively in your moment of fear that the boy has to scoot away so he isn’t hit by your flailing figure. Then one more time, you’re at the highest point of the swing when your frightened flailing becomes too much and before either of you can register, you’re flying off the swing and freefalling toward the ground.
He’s afraid to look so he turns away, but your loud crying quickly turns him back to you as the recess bell rings, signaling the end of your playtime. When he sees you on the ground, his first instinct is to run away. But then he sees you grasping your leg and crying, crying, crying.
God, you sure do cry a lot.
“Are you… are you okay?” He asks, running to kneel beside you.
You shake your head furiously, still grasping onto your ankle which burns with pain. It’s the worst pain you’ve ever felt in all eight years of your life. Tears freely flow down the apples of your cheeks.
On the verge of panicking, Donghyuck tears your arm from where you’re grasping onto your leg in the moment of searing pain, and swings it over his shoulder. “Come on,” he says, as though encouraging not you, but himself. With the strength that a normal eight year old wouldn’t have, he stands and pulls you to your feet. Your eyes wince in pain as sharpness shoots up your right leg, but alongside Donghyuck, the two of you walk to the nurse’s office.
He had lied. He said he wouldn’t push you too hard. He promised.
Your parents had told you since you were a little kid, fibbing about whether or not you ate the last cookie in the cookie jar, that lying was bad. But that day, you find that maybe lying isn’t always bad.
Because Donghyuck’s lie brings you a new friend.
-
“Do you think things will change, Hyuck?”
Your sudden question causes him to open his eyes from where he lays in the grass. When he does, it’s as though the stars in the sky are reflected on his orbs. But no, that’s just your crush on your best friend making itself prevalent once again.
“Things change everyday, Y/N.” His answer leaves you unsatisfied, so you roll your eyes, laying back down beside him in the grass. The playground is only a few feet away, but who are you to play at the park? You’re thirteen years old, for God’s sake.
“I mean in high school. The first day of school is already next week, aren’t you worried?” You turn to him, eyebrows furrowing at his relaxed expression.
His chapped lips purse in mild consideration, before shrugging his t-shirt clad shoulders. Carefree Donghyuck and worrisome Y/N, that’s your dynamic.
“It’s just high school. Same people, different classes. Why are you worried?”
“It’s just—” You sigh, eyes staring up into the endless dark abyss of the sky. “Things change. People change. You’ve seen the teen movies! The childhood best friends go to high school, one of them is super smart and becomes a nerd, the other one goes and does drugs.”
All you get in response is a laugh. Donghyuck’s laughter is something you’ve become accustomed to over the years. He has the light, boisterous laughter where something is so absolutely funny that he can’t help but screech. There’s the mid-tier average laugh, which he often lets out around relatives to be polite, but it comes off a bit awkward. Finally, he has the low chuckle in his throat he does when he finds something amusing and almost pitiful—it’s almost always reserved for you.
“We can definitely tell which one of us is which,” he jokes, which causes you to turn and slap his chest lightly, playfully.
“Drugs are bad,” you respond gently, reeling back into your space on the grass. Hyuck doesn’t understand: he’s easygoing, an extrovert with a sunny disposition. He’ll have no problem making friends in high school. You, on the other hand, won’t have it so easy. You can’t lose your one and only best friend. Wrapping yourself in your hoodie, you sigh. Hyuck registers this pitiful sound and settles down a bit; he knows when you’re really upset about something.
Suddenly scooching closer to you on the grass, he speaks softly. “Listen.” You do. “Nothing is going to change. Not between us. Things will happen, we’ll meet people, but we’re best friends forever, okay?” Now he looks straight to you rather than the sky, and you stare back. There’s something in his eyes, determination clear as he speaks. “I promise there will come a day when we grow up and become old, that we’ll come back to this park and stargaze just like now. By then, we’ll be able to drive ourselves, and your mom won’t have to wait for us,” he says, nudging his head toward the curb where your mom sits in her car. This makes you laugh: it really is amusing, your mom waiting for the two of you. “So shut up and stop doubting.”
Hyuck knows your insecurity and that’s what makes him your best friend. Your only best friend in the whole world. Quietly you respond with a question, digging your hand out of your hoodie sweater paws. “You really promise?”
Easily does he intertwine his finger with yours before leaning back into his spot. “Do I ever break my promises?”
The answer is yes, because a month later it’s a Friday afternoon when Hyuck does just that—break his promise.
Your first month of high school wasn’t as bad as you had initially thought it would be, really. Your teachers seemed nice for the most part, and you had managed to make a friend. A real friend, other than Hyuck. His name is Mark, and you only meet him because he’s the TA for your biology class. He’s a year older and not completely comfortable speaking Korean yet, but you’ll take what you can get!
Sadly, you don’t have any classes with your best friend. You don’t even share the same lunch period, and it saddens you that you can’t pay witness to Hyuck laughing so hard to shoot carrot bits from his nose anymore. He made friends in his classes though, and tells you about them. Most of them are upperclassmen… it’s not a surprise that your outgoing friend would be so compatible with older kids. So, you don’t get to see him that often. But that’s what the time outside of school is spent for: your best friend.
The two of you are supposed to meet at the park like you normally do on Fridays. It’s not a long walk from your school, and you’re halfway there when your phone vibrates in your pocket. Fishing it out, your eyes focus on the message lit on the screen.
[ Hyuckie ] : Jaehyun hyung invited me to hang out with the guys at his house. Sorry! Next week, I promise.
You sigh.
It’s not the first time he’s rainchecked you for that group of rambunctious older boys. The first week of school, you were supposed to get ice cream when he suddenly pulled up with those guys in tow. Just last weekend, he had promised to take you roller skating for your birthday, only to cancel when you already had your shoes on.
It’s like he has no time for you anymore.
So with a bitter huff, you send a passive-aggressive response and turn on your heels, trudging the rest of the way home.
-
When the bell rings, you slip your airpods into your ears and put your hood on. Finally, the day is over. Sadly, it’s only Tuesday so you still have a ways to go before the weekend.
Music rings in your ears as you tread down the halls of your high school, hands tucked into your hoodie pocket. It’s quite hot outside, winter transforming into the buds of spring. Spring and the oncoming heat make it more difficult for you to limit your fashion to hoodies.
When you push open the front building doors, the heat hits you, but you immediately walk toward a little shaded area under a tree near the courtyard. It’s where you always wait for him after school.
As you make your way there, the group of boys leaning against the wall don’t fail to catch your attention. With their brightly coloured hair and dark shaded eyes, it’s hard to miss them.
You have to reject the urge to visibly scoff at their appearance—they don’t even go here anymore, having graduated years ago. Why do they still show up here and hang around like they own the place?
Even if they left the school a while back, they still have a vivid reputation at the school. Though you had never paid attention, there are a few you know. Taeyong, presumably the oldest with his bright red hair and clouded gaze. Johnny, who had quickly been recruited into this group of delinquents upon his transfer from Chicago. Among them are others who you don’t care at all about.
Though their gazes follow you as you walk directly across their line of sight, you ignore them and retreat to your spot. Flopping down, your bottom meets the grass and you lean your head back against the tree. Closing your eyes, music fills your ears as your eyes meet darkness. For a moment, it’s as though you can shut out the world and simply relish in your own company.
High school hasn’t changed you much, but the people around you have changed.
The moment passes soon enough, as you feel a light slap on your thigh causing you to open your eyes. Your gaze lands on the sight of your best friend, who plops down beside you. A gleeful smile spreads across your face as you take your airpod out.
“Mark,” you tsk. “You’re late.”
“Sorry,” he apologizes, though a smile rests on his face. “Mr. Moon wanted to talk to me about something.”
“What about?”
“Auditioning for the talent show.” You blink, your eyes widening a bit at his revelation. Mr. Moon runs the talent show every year; if Mark had caught his eye, there would be no doubt that he would get in, and maybe even win the show.
“Really? You should!”
“I don’t know,” he says, pursing his lips in thought. “Honestly I don’t think I’d be good enough.”
“Shut up, you will. Besides, it’s your last year, you’ll never know what could have been if you never try.” The thought sobers you a bit: because Mark is a year older than you, his senior year will soon be coming to an end. The idea of spending your final year without your best friend saddens you.
Speaking of what could have been, the same time that Mark shows up, someone else also makes an appearance.
Fleetingly your eyes flicker over the group in the corner. Lee Donghyuck joins the group, his purple hair falling over his eyes as he lets his backpack fall to the floor. You watch, lips pursed as Taeyong hands him a joint, then you turn away.
He doesn’t call himself Donghyuck anymore. Or Hyuck, or your best friend. He’s Haechan now.
“Hello, earth to Y/N,” Mark’s voice rings in your ear.
Shaking your head to rid your thoughts of what could have been, you look to your best friend. Black hair is more appropriate than purple, you decide then. “Hm?”
“I was telling you that I’m leaving, but you zoned out.” You know he has his job, shifting through vinyls at the record store, in twenty minutes. Slowly, you bob your head in a nod.
“Okay… Have fun at work.”
“I will. I work for the rest of the week but we’ll hang out this weekend, okay?” You nod in response. He’s been a bit busy recently, but you don’t worry too much about it. “Promise.”
Your smile must visibly falter a bit, even though you try not to let it show. Mark’s eyes immediately widen slightly—sometimes he forgets how you dislike promises. How they give you a sense of false hope, and how you’d rather not give them space in your heart to do so. “Sorry,” he sounds. He stands and places a hand on your shoulder with a gentle smile. “I’ll see you.”
Then he leaves, and you pop your music back into your ear. With a soft sigh you look out at the courtyard, at the students leaving and cars moving. Will there ever be anything more than this? You take in the sight: the students running across the yard to their friends, the school doors opening and closing, even the group of boys racketing in the corner of your vision.
Hyuck—or Haechan as he now calls himself, though you find the name to be dumb and pretentious—is the youngest of them all. It all started in freshman year, when he met them and the distance between the two of you grew. His promises had worn thin, and eventually the string of friendship between you ripped apart right before your eyes. You can’t say that you miss him.
Because you don’t miss Haechan, the replacement for the boy you once knew. You miss Hyuck.
Your best friend who snuck over to your house on his bike when you had gotten rejected by Huang Renjun. The person you could always trust to push you on the swings and know your limits.
But that’s not him anymore.
The thought puts a sour taste on your tongue so you turn your eyes away from the cloud surrounding them and close your eyes. You don’t need him anymore. All you need is the music in your ears and the warm sun soaking into your skin.
You’re not sure how many minutes pass, but suddenly the warmth disappears from your skin. Your eyes slide open and there he is, casting a shadow over you. The sun is gone, only cold filling your veins at the sight of the long-legged memory before you and the smell of weed filling your nose. You take your airpods out of your ears, sighing.
Your voice comes out harsher than you intend. “What do you want, Haechan?”
Your use of his name must catch him off guard. You’ve never called him that—even when you drifted apart, like lonely boats without anchors, you always called him Hyuck in your sweetest tone. Now all you reserve for him is indifference.
“Haechan?”
“That’s your name isn’t it?”
He blinks, eyes fluttering underneath his lavender fringes. “Oh—” Sheepishly, he nods. It’s unlike the normal persona he employs when walking around school. That Haechan is cocky, flirtatious. “It is.”
You’re not entirely sure what it is that ticks you off. Not him, but the memory of him. “I don’t want any weed, if that’s what you’re asking.”
Haechan has the nerve to scoff. “No, that’s not what I’m asking.” You raise your eyebrow at him; he had left you in the dust when he decided to become one with those drug-doing law-breaking fools, yet he has the audacity to stand in front of you now. He takes a deep breath, tucking his hands into the pockets of his dark ripped jeans, which definitely don’t fit the school dress code. “I want to ask if you want to hang out?”
“Hang out,” you repeat, eyebrow raised. You could almost scoff from how ridiculous it sounds.
“Yeah.” He nods. His eyes are big, almost sheepish, and for a second he looks like your old Donghyuck. Behind the chains, the hair dye, the eyeliner, and the weed scent, you wonder if he still is. “I promised you I’d take you skating, remember?”
“No, I don’t,” you lie curtly, rising to your feet. Skating, that was over three years ago. It’s upsetting, but something in the way he still remembers this broken promise pushes you to say your next words. “Fine.”
As though he hadn’t expected you to acquiesce so easily, he nods. “How about Saturday? I’ll pick you up at your house? You… you still live in the same place, right?” It’s both humorous and painful that he has to ask.
“Mhm.” You sling your backpack over your shoulder and stare at him. “6PM. Don’t be late. And leave the weed at home. You stink.”
With that, you turn on your heels and make your way home. Behind you, you can hear the group of rambunctious boys yelling, congratulating their youngest.
-
Saturday comes quicker than normal, and it’s nearing five when you’re still not dressed for your meeting with Haechan.
If it were four years ago, you would have thrown on a t-shirt and called it that. If you were hanging out with Mark, it would have been easy to just put on a hoodie and jeans. But something is different now.
Why are you nervous? You ask yourself as you stand before the mirror.
It’s not… a date, but something in you wants to dress up, to look nice. But why? You don’t own many fashionable items, and it’s not a date. You hold back a self-deprecating groan as you darken your lashes with mascara and slather some lip gloss over your lips. He doesn’t deserve it.
You had expected him to come to your door, but when Haechan pulls up to your house in his very own car, all he does is text you. You had deleted his number years ago. Had he kept your’s all this time? Is your contact name still the same?
Fluttering down the stairs in a pair of jeans and a nicer t-shirt, you have to stop to remind yourself not to get caught up in the moment. This isn’t a date.
“You drive now,” is your first comment as you slip into the passenger seat.
The air is dank, reminiscent of a clear weed smell but it’s masked, as though someone had tried to get rid of it. “You look nice,” he says.
All you say is, “Thanks,” then retire yourself to looking out the window. He drives you to the roller rink, the familiar streets sliding by. The ride is quiet, awkward. Four years ago, the two of you would have been chattering away.
By the time he pulls into the parking lot, you’re reconsidering why you even agreed to coming here with him. After he parks, you step out and walk ahead toward the entrance of the roller rink. He jogs to catch up with you, and it’s the first time you get a good look at his outfit.
He dons a blue flannel over a white t-shirt and blue skinny jeans. A chain hangs from his belt hook, and another by his neck. His hair is done up, unlike the purple fringe he wore over his eyes earlier in the week. The old Hyuck you knew was a fashion disaster.
“What’s up?” He asks, tucking his hands into his pockets again as the two of you fall into the line. You need something to do with your hands, and suddenly you regret attempting to dress nice; your hoodie was a lot more comfortable.
“Why did you bring me here?” You ask suddenly, turning to him.
“I told you,” Haechan responds. “I wanted to hang out. And I made a promise to you that I’d take you skating for your birthday, but I didn’t. I just want to lighten my conscience a bit.”
A laugh almost leaves your lips at this. His conscience?
“Does your conscience ignore the weed and loitering?”
“Loitering? When do I loiter?”
“No, not you.” You shake your head, correcting him. “Your friends. They don’t even go to school anymore, why are they always around? Waiting for you?”
He blinks, then shakes his head. “Taeyong and Doyoung hyung are helping Mr. Moon coordinate the talent show. They have meetings with him after school. Jaehyun hyung teaches a piano class after school and Johnny tags along.”
Somehow, his answers shock you. It’s hard to picture his “friends” helping out at the school. You don’t respond, and clearly he’s less happy than you to talk about his friends because he follows his words with, “Can we not talk about them? I wanted to catch up with you, not talk more about them.”
“Sorry,” you mumble half-heartedly as you approach the booth, grabbing your size in the roller skates. Then, you search for a spot to sit down and put them on. For a few moments before Haechan joins you with his own skates, you think to yourself, is he sincere? He keeps saying it, and you want to believe it. Does your old Hyuck, your best friend exist somewhere in there?
Haechan approaches you, his skates in hand. You’re focused on tying your own, but you manage to scoot over on the bench you’re in to make room for him to sit as well.
But he surprises you.
He kneels, placing his skates on the ground and before you know it, your fingers on the laces are replaced by his as he ties them into a tight knot. You look up to him, but all your eyes fall on is his face, tightened in focused concentration. “What are you…” You start.
When he finishes tying the last lace into a tight bow, he looks up to meet your eyes. “You should tie them tight. Your laces used to always fall out when we were younger.” Then the corner of his lip tips up into a smile, and you can swear your heart races.
It beats out of your chest and you’re suddenly vividly aware of the fact that his face is mere inches away from yours.
But as quickly as the realization hits you, the moment is over.
He pulls away, taking the seat next to you before putting on his own skates. When he finishes, he pulls you up by the hand to the skating area and you let him. Your legs are a little shaky, but he looks over to you with careful eyes. “I’ll make sure you don’t fall.”
It’s not a promise, but it feels like one. Maybe, you decide, it’s okay to let down your walls and be with him. After all, he was, once upon a time, your best friend.
As much as you want to pull away from him, your legs are sliding, about to give out. You grip onto his arm with both hands, trying to keep your balance, and his hearty laugh is heard in your ear. In the midst of his laugh and your attempt to stand straight, your hand slides down to grasp his instead.
By the time you realize this, you’re already sliding halfway across the rink with gentle hesitant laughs on your lips. This is the first time you’ve talked to Donghyuck in years, yet it feels, you realize as your gaze down at your connected hands, as if you’d never stopped.
A couple hours later when you’ve both had more pizza than your stomachs can hold and both your knees are starting to bruise from how you’ve slipped onto them, Donghyuck brings you somewhere else.
Despite the curtain of dark over the town, you know where he’s taken you the moment he pulls into the street.
When he parks and you slide your feet out of the car to meet the grass, you look around and take in the appearance of this old place which hasn’t felt your presence in years. Your old park. Everything still looks the same, as if your late night stargazing sessions had never halted.
You’re still gazing when Donghyuck pulls you by the hand to the playground. “Come on,” he ushers.
“Hyuck, aren’t you a little old for the playground?” You question, not recognizing your slip.
He stops walking altogether and blinks at you, the light of the moon reflecting off his sparkling orbs. “You… You called me Hyuck.”
You hadn’t even noticed it yourself. Pursing your lips, you respond carefully. “Well… it is your name, isn’t it?” Somehow, your gaze finds your interlaced hands. By the time you look back up, you realize Donghyuck was also staring.
A soft smile graces the tips of his lips. “Yeah, it is.”
For a moment, a short moment, Haechan is forgotten. All that exists at the park with you is Donghyuck, your best friend since age eight when he had pushed you too hard on the swings and caused you to fracture your ankle. You had always blamed it on him in the following years, but it was never his fault.
It was always yours, for not being brave enough.
Even now, Hyuck pushes you on the swings after you give him a pointed look which clearly says, “Not too hard.” The force of his push reminds you how big of a role adrenaline once played in your life. Hyuck was your daily dose of adrenaline, of energy you never knew was missing from your life until it was gone. Now, he’s back again.
After a few minutes, the two of you find yourself lying on the grass gazing up at the stars, in a similar situation that your younger selves once experienced. You’re content to sit there staring at the glistening firmament above, but his velvet voice fills the silence between you.
“Is Mark a good best friend?”
His question catches you off guard. It could be a trick of your mind but is that… jealousy you hear in his tone? “Yeah, he is.” You nod, the cold breeze brushing your face. “He’s nice. Understanding… I’m just not looking forward to having to spend the next year without him after he graduates.”
“You don’t have to,” Hyuck replies quickly. You turn to meet his gaze, and find that he’s gazing at you with serious eyes. “You can spend it with me.”
The thought, however hopeful, causes a twinge of doubt to ignite within you. “What about the others?”
“What about them?”
“Are they good best friends?”
Like you, Hyuck takes a long moment to ponder over his answer. “They’re not my best friends,” he finally says when he comes to a conclusion. “They were always just placeholders. Just… people to spend time with.”
“Spend time as in vandalizing, smoking weed, and skipping school?”
He releases a scoff at your response, as though the idea sounded absurd to him as well. “Well… yeah. I guess that’s what it seems like.” You’ve never been the type to do those kinds of things, always too afraid of losing your self control for even a moment, so you ask: “What’s it like? Smoking weed?”
Your inquiry seems to throw him for a loop. You had always been quiet, comfortable living in a box which you knew to be safe. It was always him who had wanted to explore. He turns away from you and instead throws his gaze to the dark sky, though you remain watching him and the way the grass brushes his side profile from where he lays.
“It’s like… searching for something. You don’t quite know what you’re looking for. I don’t know—Nirvana, epiphanies, the meaning of life, or whatever. And for a second,” he pauses, his eyes matching the twinkle of the stars in the sky, but it’s a somber reflection. “When you reach that high, it’s… it’s amazing. It really is. You feel… calm. And relaxed, a bunch of things I’ve never felt before. But when you get used to it, and you come down from that high… it just feels… empty.”
Emptiness isn’t something you’d ever think Hyuck has experienced. In your memories he was always so bright-eyed and lighthearted, filling you up with everything you needed. Had you forgotten how to fill him up? Make him happy? Or, your hopeful heart suddenly asks, are you the emptiness in his heart? When he left you, was that when his heart had begun to feel hollow, as yours had? When had things changed so much, when had the two of you grown up? It seems just like yesterday that you were two little kids with hopes bigger than the world could hold, still playing on the playground.
Suddenly you lurch toward him, closing the space between you to lay shoulder to shoulder. The simple brush of your shoulder on his, a feeling that was once so familiar, speaks volumes to the both of you. “I wish things could go back to the way they were before.”
He sighs, a sound that’s supposed to somehow indicate that your words are easier said than done. “If only life was that easy.”
A thoughtful moment of silence passes over the two of you, the cold night air brushing on your bare arms. Your hoodies often kept you warm, but you don’t have them now. Instead, you have Donghyuck. “Are you cold?” He asks as he notices you shivering at a sudden strong gust of wind. You shake your head, not wanting him to give his flannel to you, but he does something else instead. “C’mere,” is all he says as he scoops you into his arms on the ground and presses your head into his chest.
You start to argue at first but you soon find yourself resting your head on the expanse of his chest. Eyes widened ever so slightly as you try to maintain the erratic beat of your heart, you whine quietly, “You didn’t have to do that.”
“We used to do this all the time.”
“Yeah,” you scoff gently with a roll of your eyes. “When we were ten and forgot our jackets.”
“Not much difference,” Hyuck responds. Suddenly a teasing tone occupies his voice, almost reminiscent of Haechan’s persona. “Don’t act like you don’t like it.”
You have the decency to be shocked, hitting his chest softly, playfully. “As if.”
He says things aren’t much different, but they are. Back then, things were simpler and easier. Your best friend was just your best friend. But now, seven years later, he’s a boy and an attractive one—that much you can admit. And, you have a history that makes your heart wrench; you had come to terms with the fact that you would no longer be able to envelope yourself in Hyuck’s bear hugs anymore, that sleepovers with him would be further nonexistent.
Hyuck doesn’t say anything after your hasty response, and it seems like he’s satisfied sitting in the silence with you, but you aren’t. Gently you speak up, “Hyuck.”
“Hmm,” he responds, eyes closed rather than gazing at the star-stricken sky.
“What’s your dream?”
He takes a moment to think about it. A couple seconds pass with his eyes still closed, and you turn your head to gaze up at his contemplative expression with tufts of dark grass tickling his ears. A couple minutes pass like this.
You’re almost convinced he’s fallen asleep right there, so you prod once again. “So?”
Hyuck takes a deep breath. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know? Everyone has a dream,” your brows furrow.
The next words to leave your best friend’s mouth sadden you to no end. His voice is soft but his tone is tired, as if he has all but given up. “I think somewhere along the line I stopped dreaming, wishing for things. It’s not the reality I’ve grown to know.”
-
By the end of the night, when the two of you arrive at your home, you’re starting to believe that a reconciliation with your best friend is possible. All these years, they were just… a break. A time for the two of you to learn yourselves and meet new people.
As he walks you to your front door, swinging your interlaced pinkies between the two of you, you speak first. The night, however sudden and strange, was nice. “I had fun.”
“Me too,” he quickly replies as he turns to face you though he doesn’t let go of your hand, your pinkies hooked around each other like a little unsaid pledge.
“I really missed you,” you confess. Before tonight you had never allowed yourself to consider how much you missed your best friend, how his absence left a gap in your life. “I want to do it again sometime.”
Hyuck’s eyes widen just a bit, and he blinks as though surprised. “You do?”
Giddily you bite down on your lower lip and nod. “I really do.”
His shocked eyes soften like sweet yellow honey, and he mirrors your smile. Here with the front porch light shining on his tanned skin and some lingering grass strands tangled in his hair, he doesn’t look like the cruel Haechan you’ve seen over your time in high school. “Thank you for tonight.”
“Why are you saying thank you?” you ask, a slight smile on your lips. “It should be me saying thank you.”
“I’m just glad you came along,” he explains, tapping his foot gently against the cement. “Taeyong would have gotten me in trouble if I hadn’t asked you to come.”
You blink. What?
“I’m just really glad you agreed to go out with me today. Even though I had no choice, I think it was really good for us, and I’d love to do it a—”
“Hyuck.”
He stops suddenly, having begun to ramble, and stares at you. “What?”
Anxiety begins to creep into your stomach, building a dark heavy pit. As your breath quickens, coming to your realization, you fall into the dark abyss of that hole. You tear your gaze away from him, your eyebrows forming a tight line as the gears in your head turn.
As he recognizes the way your chest starts to rise and fall rapidly, Hyuck leans toward you. “Y/N, are you—”
“What do you mean, you had no choice?”
“You’re shaking, you should go inside—”
You tear your hand from his, trying your best to control your accelerated breathing. Finally looking back at him, you feel despair begin to bubble inside you. “What the hell do you mean, you had no choice, Donghyuck?”
The look on his face is almost dumbstruck. He opens his mouth but no words come out. He closes it quickly, then parts his lips again after a moment. “I… I thought you knew…”
“Knew what?”
“That Taeyong hyung made me do it.”
If it’s possible for your entire world to crash in the fraction of a moment, it must be this. Suddenly your lungs feel heavy with burden and your eyes water, watching your ill-fated hope shatter before you. You want to scream at him, to yell at him, but you can’t find your voice. By your side, your hand which was once occupied by his, feels awfully, horribly cold.
Hyuck, on the other hand, still looks stupefied that you had no idea. Stuttering over his words, uncharacteristic of him, he continues desperately. “I-I… They know about us, about our friendship, and Taeyong hyung told me to ask you on a date or…or he’d make me deliver his next package. I already got caught once, I couldn’t get caught again! I couldn’t risk it,” he pleads.
Weed. That’s what this is all about.
“It was just for fun, they thought it was funny.”
Your throat feels dry, parched like the desert, and your voice feels like sandpaper as you speak. “I didn’t think it was funny.” A lonesome tear breaks the barrier, sliding down your cheek pitifully before being followed by another.
Clearly startled by the course of the conversation, he desperately reaches out to grab your hand. “Y/N, please let me explain—”
You whip your hand back, his touch making your skin crawl with betrayal.
“You’ve done enough.”
Of all the things he could say, he says the worst. “I thought you heard everything that day, in the courtyard.”
“I…” You start thinking back foggily. “I had my airpods on.” The pained look he wears at his realization of this would have been laughable if your tears weren’t threatening to flow down your cheeks.
All you want to do is run. Run inside, run away from him, run from this night and pretend that nothing had ever happened. But for some reason, your feet are stuck to the cement as though something holds you down. Burden-like weights, holding you down.
“I, I’m sorry,” he beseeches, only making it worse. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
You want to yell at him, to curse him into the next life for playing with you. For not knowing your character enough to think that for even a second, you’d be okay being a pawn in his game of dealing and dares. For giving you hope, even the slightest burning sliver. But you can’t raise your voice at him. Rather than fury, it’s sadness which erupts in your chest. You cannot find it in yourself to scream. Because he did, he did hurt you.
This must be the emptiness he was talking about.
Any sense of blankness you thought you knew before was nothing to this. As if your heart and mind itself have been ripped out of you, you’re overcome by a horrible, horrible hollowness. Then, looking at his pitiful figure, you realize that you want nothing to do with Lee Donghyuck any longer. Whoever he is, good or bad, best friend or stranger, Haechan or Hyuck, he is no longer important to you.
Wiping your tears against the back of your hand with an indignant sniffle, you scowl at him, but there is no anger, no resentment. Just exhaustion. You’re tired of his lies.
“Leave me alone, Haechan. Leave me alone, and don’t ever bother me again. I can’t believe I—” You stop yourself. You can’t believe you had believed, even for the shortest moment, that things would be okay. No, not with him, nothing would ever be okay. Nothing would ever be true, nothing would ever be pure. But you refuse to give him the satisfaction of knowing just how close you were to falling into him.
All you do is stare once more at his cowardly figure then turn away, hiding your tears which you refuse to let him see. Just as you’re about to turn to disappear into your house however, he reaches for your wrist.
“Y/N, please—”
“Don’t,” you say softly. If he truly is your best friend, if he had ever known you for even a second, he would be able to recognize the pain in your voice, the fragility with which you’re about to break.
But if he was ever your best friend, by now you can never truly know.
For a third and final time, you tug your hand from his touch. “Don’t. I mean it.”
Then you disappear into your home, flying up the stairs to the confusion of your parents, and leave Donghyuck there alone, stranded and in the dark.
-
There was a reason why you never liked parties growing up, and why you tried avoiding them at all cost, but today is different. Today is for Mark, you have to suck it up and enjoy yourself at least for him. Besides, since hitting twenty three you’ve been trying to “adult” more, and that means putting other people’s desires before your own.
You’re sitting on a couch in the bar, clutching a water bottle when you hear Mark’s voice in your ear. “Hey, you made it!”
Immediately you turn and feel your lips spread into a wide smile at the sight of your best friend looking completely ecstatic. Standing quickly, you collapse into his open arms. He pulls you tightly into a hug and you smile feeling his familiar embrace.
“Hey, you,” you say when you pull away. “Congratulations! I’m so proud of you, really.”
The beaming smile he wears back at you makes your heart warm. “Thanks, and thanks for coming! I thought you weren’t sure you were going to make it.”
“I cleared my schedule for you,” you admit cheekily.
“Aw, I must be so special,” responds Mark playfully, pulling you in for another quick hug. Mark has just been signed onto a record company as a producer. It’s only his biggest dream ever, and you couldn’t be prouder. His record label had insisted on throwing a party to welcome their newest hire, and from the smile on his face, it seemed like all his dreams had come true.
“But enough about me, how are you?”
With your busy post-college schedule, you’ve had little time to meet your best friend. “Just the usual. Work, eat, sleep.”
“Hey, at least you sleep, I’m up all night, every night working on music.”
“I believe that was your career choice,” you laugh and roll your eyes.
Mark laughs along with you. “I guess you’re right.” He suddenly eyes the water bottle in your hand. “Don’t tell me you’re not drinking at my party.”
“I—”
“No excuses! It’s a Saturday night, don’t say you have work tomorrow.”
“But—”
“Sounds like an excuse, you better go to the bar right now and get a drink.”
“I’m—”
“Now!”
“Okay, okay, I’m going!” You finally acquiesce, rolling your eyes at your friend’s behavior. “Do you want me to grab you something?”
He ponders it momentarily, sitting down in the spot on the couch you occupied earlier. “Just one of what you’re getting,” he says, already making conversation with the other person on the couch, one of his new coworkers.
You make your way over to the bar counter, basically shoving past the numerous people occupying the bar. With the prestige of the company that Mark has just been hired into, you wouldn’t be surprised if you were brushing shoulders with celebrities in your search for the bar.
When you finally find a spot at the crowded counter, you attempt to speak over the music to one of the two bartenders maintaining the counter. Flashing your ID at him, you sound, “Two Negronis, one with light ice!” You’re in the mood for gin tonight. You would have gotten your typical gin on the rocks, but you’re feeling a bit fancy and with the open bar, you’re fine not paying for the extra pizazz of a Negroni.
The one you originally speak to seems occupied but he hears you, nodding at you. As you pull out your phone to wait for your order, you register him calling out to someone, likely the other bartender with him. “Take care of that,” he says, likely referring to your order.
Only a few moments pass of you attempting to type out a text until you hear it.
Though it’s not loud, you hear it. Above the music, above the crowd.
“Y/N?”
Eyes leaving your phone screen, you find yourself face to face, eye to eye, with Lee Donghyuck himself. In front of you on the other side of the bar counter, clad in a dark apron and clutching a tall bottle of gin, with his light brain hair, tendrils falling over his eyes, it’s almost like it’s the first time you’ve ever seen him. Your gaze hasn’t fallen on him in years, not since graduation, watching him walk across the stage. Your jaw visibly tightens.
“Y/N, is that really you?”
“Who else would it be,” you joke tightly, deciding momentarily to play nice for now.
The laugh he shares is almost believable. “Wow, I can’t believe it’s you. It’s been…”
“Five years,” you finish for him.
Astounded, all he does is nod. “Yeah…”
The last thing you want to do is sit here and take part in a tired conversation with Donghyuck of all people, so you make a show of pointing your attention to your phone as you type a couple text messages. He seems to get the hint, and busies himself making your drinks.
Despite the buzzing bar environment around the two of you, there’s no doubt of the tension in the air. The last time you had spoken to Donghyuck, you had demanded that he leave you alone. For the most part, he had complied. But now, five years later, you have to ask yourself, have you forgiven him?
In the past years since your final falling out you’ve somehow learned to manage the emptiness that sprung inside you, yet now seeing him, you feel something other than hollowness, a swallow feeling in your chest. Are you… ready?
Within minutes he slides two glasses across the counter to you, red liquid occupying its volume. As you tuck your phone away into your purse and reach out to grab your two drinks, it’s clear to you that he has something more to say from the way his eyes linger on the glasses.
“What?” You ask.
“Are you…” He starts, eyebrows furrowing as he suddenly pauses, as though thinking over his words. “You got two glasses. Are you… here with someone?”
He’s curious if you’ve found someone. If you’ve brought them here and if they’ve managed to replace the empty space in your heart once occupied by him. You purse your lips, offering a tight smile as you shake your head. “No, one of these is for Mark.”
You’re unsure if the look on his face at your answer is a relieved one, but you’re sure it won’t bring about good things. “Oh,” he says. “That’s… interesting.” What is that supposed to mean? You have no idea, but when you’re about to turn and make your way back to your friend who is surely waiting for you, he speaks up again. “I have my break in thirty minutes. Can we… talk maybe?”
Talk. He wants to talk, but at this point you’ve learned that accepting any offer from Donghyuck will only lead to trouble. What is there to talk about? Will he apologize? You’ve already told him that you don’t want his apologies. Will he try to fix things? Regardless you’re sure that whatever it is, he will attempt to make his way back into your life, your life that you had worked so hard to create without him.
Every atom, every part of you screams at you to reject him.
But perhaps it’s the heavy feeling in your chest that tells you to say yes. You have unsaid words, words you have held within you for years, and now you might finally have the courage to say them.
Cautiously, you nod. “Fine. Thirty minutes?”
He’s visibly relieved at your easy agreement, and bobs his head in response. “Thirty minutes.”
Because you’re made uncomfortable by his gaze you feel the need to thank him for the drinks in your hands. With a slight gulp you hold the glasses up in a slight gesture. “Thank you for the drinks… Haechan.” His name feels foreign on your tongue.
“Oh, it’s just Donghyuck now. I stopped going by that name a long time ago.”
-
Over the following thirty minutes, barely sipping on your drink, you try to recollect all you’ve ever felt about Lee Donghyuck.
Once upon a time, he was your playground buddy. Pushing you on the swing high above the play area, he showed you the most thrill an eight year old could have. His excitement did lead to your broken ankle of course, but he had carried your backpack for eight weeks after that.
For many years he was the person you considered to be your best friend. The only person you could trust to share secrets with, like how your first kiss was with Huang Renjun of all people and how you were still, after all these years, afraid of the heights that came along with flying high on the swings.
In high school he was almost an enemy to you, someone you disregarded. Someone you had no respect for, with his smoking habits and dyed neon purple hair.
Then, for the shortest moment so fleeting it felt like a blink of an eye, he was someone you wanted. Someone you desired, someone you could have seen a future with not as a best friend but as a… partner. Laying there in the wet grass beneath the stars with your head on his chest and his voice in your ears, you could have accepted him. Could have forgiven all the distance between you and made it work. Could have become one again.
Then in the moment of truth all you could remember was anger and the pain of the betrayal. At that moment you were set on cutting Donghyuck out of your life. You could no longer take his lies, his habit of coming and going as he pleased. You cut him off.
But that didn’t mean he no longer occupied your thoughts.
Now, standing in front of him in a private room somewhere in the bar, you realize you no longer have anger for him. He is just someone who has hurt you, someone who is part of your past. From the way he gazes at you, he wants you in his future.
You’ve long since graduated from your hoodies and leggings. Now you don a dress, comfortable but also dressy enough for the occasion. But just because you’ve grown doesn’t mean you want him to watch you the way he does.
“You look nice,” he starts. Familiarity rings in your mind, and you purse your lips slightly.
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true,” retorts Donghyuck quickly.
“Sometimes it’d be nice to hear a compliment not involving my appearance from you,” you respond almost a bit too harshly.
Taking the loud hint, he quiets and doesn’t continue the topic. Instead he asks, “How are you?”
Unable to control the lilted chuckle that leaves your lips, you raise an eyebrow at him. “That’s what you brought me here for?” There’s no hostility in your tone, yet he winces.
“Well, uh… yeah. I just—we haven’t talked since—”
“Since you broke my heart?”
This seems to be news to him, because his eyes widen ever so slightly, outlined slightly in dark kohl that seems reminiscent of your high school days. “I broke your heart?”
He didn’t know. It’s almost laughable and you could almost be upset at him for not knowing just how strong of an effect he’s had on your entire life, if not for the fact that he looks absolutely pitiful, staring with wide eyes at the damage he’s done. You gulp, and nod tightly. “Yeah, you did.” After a moment, you add, “Tore it to pieces.”
A timeline of silence persists, before he speaks, voice low. “I’m sorry.”
He even sounds it, and from the way he looks, still clad in his apron and standing straight in front of you whilst you’re leaning on the wall, you could believe it. But at this point you’ve learned better than to believe anything that comes out of his mouth. Has he matured? Perhaps, but something tells you that he’s still the same kid you’ve known since the time before you could do long division.
Yet despite this, perhaps to settle the disruptive fire in your heart that has been burning, aching since the moment you turned your back on him, you nod. “I forgive you.”
Still, you continue with a scoff. “You didn’t even know. Didn’t even know that every single relationship, every promise, every smile from anyone since I’ve met you, I’ve had to reconsider. You didn’t even know, probably still don’t, how hard it is to trust someone, anyone. You were my best friend, Hyuck, and you betrayed me. How was that supposed to make me feel? Especially when you didn’t even come find me after that? You just… expected to just get away with it? You thought it’d be easy to just leave and never say anything, never apologize?”
He simply stands there, eyes trained to the ground in what seems to be shame as he takes in your words. You’re not done.
“And to think, I almost thought that things could go back to normal, that we could be friends again. Maybe…” You catch yourself on your words. You had never admitted them out loud. “Maybe even—even…”
His eyes move up to meet yours.
“Maybe even more,” you finally release in a breath.
“More?” The familiar emotion of surprise flashes over his dark ochre stained eyes. “You… you wanted to be with me?”
The truth is, yes. You did. In some way, perhaps you still do. You’ve always wanted him, you’ve always been ready to freefall into him at any moment. But he doesn’t deserve it.
“I really wanted to. But clearly that’s not possible at this point.”
“No—” He runs a ring adorned hand through his dark locks, a contrast from the neon purple you associated with him. Other things you associate with him—sadness, betrayal, lies, yet still stars in a night sky. “Y/N, I… I love you. I’ve always loved you. I meant it when I said you were my only best friend, you’re the only one. Not Taeyong, or Johnny, or Jaehyun, or anyone. It’s always been you.”
He… loved you.
It hits you like a truck because as much as he claims it, he has a horrible way of showing it. “Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not lying, fuck—I swear. I know I was a horrible friend, and I know I hurt you. Y/N, please, please listen to me. Please believe me.” Suddenly he’s grasping at your hands, beseeching you with pleading eyes. “I’m different, I promise. I’m not that old me, I’m better. I can be better.”
You rip your hands from his grasp.
“I said don’t lie to me! I told you to stop making promises you can’t keep. You’re doing it again, just like always did. You had your chance, and you lost it. You lost me, Hyuck, it’s over.” He stares at you with widened eyes at your sudden outburst, his brows and lips downturned in an expression of sadness. “I was always willing to make things better, I was ready to take you back the moment you stepped in front of me that day at school and forced me to go on a date with you. I never stopped loving you, and you never stopped being my favorite person, Hyuck. But this—” you say, gesturing to the two of you. “—was doomed from the start.”
You sigh, but this time you calm yourself with a breath and grab at his hands, though you had pulled away from him earlier. “It could have been, you and me. We could have been the perfect trope of childhood best friends who fall in love and spend the rest of their lives together, but that was clearly always out of the question for us. And it’s okay, Hyuck. It’s okay. It’s okay that we’ve grown apart, and that you’ve hurt me more times than I can count, and that we won’t be able to fulfill that fantasy. It’s okay, it really is. Please, just… accept it.”
The way he stares at you, the passion that he holds in his eyes causes a yearning feeling to infiltrate your heart. Yet your mind is clear enough for you to discern it’s not him that you miss, it’s the simpler times with him that you long for.
His eyes are pleading when he finally opens his mouth to respond. “You’ve called me Hyuck four times now. That leads me to think that it’s possible. We’re possible, Y/N…”
“I called you that because it’s your name,” you tell him softly, eyes moving down to where your hands are comfortingly rubbing small circles on his skin. He still has the most rough, callused hands you’ve ever felt in your life. “And because I’m going to choose to remember you as Hyuck, my best friend. Not Donghyuck, the kid who pushed me off the swings. Not Haechan, the boy who hurt me. Just Hyuck, my best friend who… made me happy for a really long time, and who will always,” you say with a slight squeeze to his hands. “Always be special to me.”
His eyes are soft as you look back up to find him. “Y/N…”
“I’ve got to go,” you tell him with a small smile. Finally, everything you’ve needed to say for years has been said.
The tears which layer upon his eyes are evident to the both of you, though you choose not to comment on it. You’re his best friend, and you’re about to walk out of his life. The last thing you offer is a comforting squeeze to his hands before you tear away from him, making your way to the door.
“Y/N.”
You stop, not saying anything before his voice pervades through the silence of the room, despite the raucous party outside. “I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
This time, you really believe him.
-
You slide the key into the keyhole and unlock the door, twisting the doorknob as you step into your apartment. To no surprise, it’s dark and empty. With a sigh leaving your throat, you slip in and slide off your shoes.
As you make your way through the apartment you flick on the lights you pass to observe your home, before clicking them off to immerse yourself in the temporary darkness again. In the hallway, books and various clutter have been arranged carefully on the shelves. Entering the living room, you take note of the way the couch cushions have been straightened and a folded blanket rests neatly on one of the lounge chairs, awaiting your arrival. A quick glance to the kitchen tells you that the floor’s been mopped and the dishes put away.
A small smile pervades across your face.
Finally, the bedroom.
Your calm, harmonious smile remains present on your face as you slip into the walk in closet, allowing the fabric of your dress to slide off your figure. Instead, you reach for your pajama bottoms and a thin tank top.
After brushing your teeth and clearing your visage of any remaining makeup, you peel off the blanket and glide into the space between the comforter and the mattress. Finally, you’re home.
You’re closing your eyes, ready to fall asleep with a newfound peace, when a hand slides around your waist. Your smile grows wider as you turn in your spot to meet the sleepy face of your fiance, Jaemin.
“Hey,” he hums tiredly.
“Hey. Sorry for waking you,” you respond lightly, pressing a kiss to his nose.
A small shake of his head and a smile is all that’s needed to settle your guilt of waking him. “It’s okay,” he says while pulling you closer to him, gathering you into his chest.
“You cleaned the apartment,” you muse in amazement at him.
The sound which comes out of him is both smug and proud. “I did. And did you have fun?”
You nod. “I did.”
“How was it?”
“It was nice. I… I met Donghyuck.”
This piques his interest. “Oh? Your best friend from high school who broke your heart?”
A pitiful laugh leaves your chest, and you nod once more. “Yeah, that one.”
“Mm, how was that? Do I need to go punch someone, teach him a lesson?” His words intend to sound menacing, but the fatigue in his tone only makes you chuckle.
“No, honey, it’s okay really. I… I told him how I feel.”
“How’d he take it?” He asks, resting his chin upon the crown of your head. He’s more than knowledgeable about your heart wrenching past toward your friend.
“It was difficult for the both of us but I think everything’s okay. Finally.”
You don’t have to look, but you know he’s smiling.
Where Hyuck is a dark night sky of stars, signifying all the possibilities of the universe, Jaemin is the dawn; the sun reappearing after an arduous night to bring you hope. Where Hyuck is a world of lies, Jaemin is your truth.
He had struggled for many years to make you see, to make you forget the scars that your time with Hyuck had inflicted on your heart. Though you had worried for many years that you were unlovable, Jaemin taught you the opposite.
He is the truth, he is all that’s good, and he is yours.
“Yeah, finally. I’m proud of you, honey. Can we sleep now?”
A laugh leaves your lips, and you nod. “Yeah, go back to sleep, love. Goodnight.” With this, he presses a kiss to your forehead. This small touch, the slightest brush of his lips over your skin, causes a world of love and emotion to erupt within your chest.
So, you say proudly, “I love you.”
He doesn’t miss a beat, replying within a second. “I love you too, with everything I am.”
With your entire heart, you believe him. You have no reason to doubt him.
He is your last and final truth.

purple scars. (d ragnvindr x reader)
i posted this on ao3 and forgot to move it here - so you get it super long and not 2 in parts. i’m thinking of continuing this, maybe?
thanks for reading and the support! i’m working on a xiao rn hopefully i can get my shit together
warning: contains some emotional trauma, implied r*pe but nothing is overly graphic. the second half is smut, separated by stars if thats what you want to skip to.
The bitter cold of Dragonspire finally started to fade away as you crossed over the bridge back into Mondstat for the first time in 10 years. You were bundled up to the extreme, having prepared for the cold, your sword on your back and jacket heavy on your shoulders. Your sword and your jacket were all you managed to steal away before you were able to escape your homeland, Inazuma. You were still dressed in the encampment clothes, your ID number splayed across the chest of the shirt and the boots too big for your feet.
You hadn’t wanted to be gone for 10 years - you wanted to only be gone for a few, to get your Electro under control. But when Baal placed borders around the country and started hunting down anyone with a Vision, life had become a living hell. You were placed in a prison camp and locked away from society shortly after, tortured beyond anything imaginable just for being born with a Vision. The only thing that kept you alive was the hope that one day, if you had gotten strong enough, you would be able to escape Inazuma to head back to Diluc, and Mondstat - were you really felt at home.
Diluc Ragnvindr was a mystery to everybody, except for you. You found yourself more often than not sneaking onto Dawn Winery’s premises when his father was not around and exploring each other’s bodies, like the horny teens that you had been. Sometimes you thought you could still feel the ghost of his fingertips on your skin at night - and tried to imagine that it was him when the Bakufu would do unspeakable things to you and the other prisoners. It was painful, and left you scarred - would Diluc even want you?
It had been 10 years - you had last seen him when you were merely 16 and he was entering the Knights of Favonius. The two of you fell in love as teenagers - no one expected it to be anything beyond that, but the two of you were convinced otherwise at the time. For you, it was still the same - you thought of Diluc every single day while you were in Inazuma. You could remember the day like it was yesterday - his heartbroken eyes, the cries you let out as you told him that you would be leaving, the way he held onto you.
“I’ll be back - I promise - I just - I need help that I can’t get here.” you sobbed into his chest. The Pyro users warmth was all around you as he held you in his room at Dawn Winery, his father out for the night, leaving the two of you bare in his bed.
“You better come back, or else I’ll go to Inazuma myself to get you.” his eyes looked down at you and your heart broke at the sight of him - Diluc was never a vulnerable person, but right now he was. One of his thumbs stroked your tears away on your cheeks as his lips peppered kisses up your neck. “I will never forget you. Ever.”
“Neither will I.” you said with a gasp, as Diluc had given you a night to never forget.
You had officially reached the other side of the bridge - the cold gone away and the warmth coming back to you. You thought about taking the jacket off, now way too hot with it on, but you didn’t want people to know where you had come from. You didn’t want their pity. There was a small camp with other adventurers and travelers around, the chef offering you food for free before you went on your way. It didn’t do much for you to quell the aching hunger you had and the shaky legs - you weren’t really the best fed and had been surviving off of fruit from trees. In short, you were in no condition to be traveling, clearly sickly and unwell. But you were not stopping now - you couldn’t. Not after all that you had overcome. You hadn’t forgotten about him.
A series of snarls from the side of you caused you to jump as you saw about four hilichurls coming right for you. You shrugged the jacket off and grabbed your sword, standing your guard as the monsters attacked. You fought them tooth and nail until your vision all but blacked out - you had hit the ground and heard someone calling for you.
“Hello? Wake up - Lumine - she needs help! Hey, wait - that’s an Inazuma camp uniform!” a high-pitched voice said to you. Your vision slowly came back as you saw a floating - fairy? You didn’t know what she was - but she was floating above you looking concerned next to a young blonde teenager. “Are you okay?”
“I - I don’t know. Need food - water - Di -” you managed to weakly say, feeling your world spin around you. The blonde teenager ran to the water source across from you - a lake? - to get you a drink of water as the fairy thing fished out something for you to eat. You felt like you were going to die - you were starving, dehydrated, but Diluc, you needed to get to Diluc.
“Here’s some water! Drink this, please.” she said to you kindly. You took the cup and quickly chugged the water, then taking the offered food. “My name is Lumine, and this is Paimon.” You gave them your name back, as they seemed trustworthy, as they sat down next to you and watched you. Paimon looked at you with sad eyes, seeing your uniform.
“Thank you very much. It’s been…. a while since I ate anything. All I have is this.” you said to them, continuing to eat. You were already feeling better, but by the way they were looking at you, you could tell that you were still quite a sight.
“You’re welcome - did you escape Inazuma? Paimon and Lumine were actually trying to find a way to sneak in.” Paimon had announced to you. You froze on the spot and looked up to them.
“What - no. Don’t go there. It’s dangerous - the camps - ” You felt panic start to bubble in your chest, your heart-rate increasing and breathing becoming staggered at the flashes of memories that flooded your mind. Paimon started calling out to you again, trying to calm you. She and Lumine had started to talk amongst themselves, looking at you trying to calm yourself as they made attempts to as well. You tried to remember Diluc - what you could of him, and slowly you were able to calm down. “I’m sorry - it’s just - it’s awful. I was there for 10 years, I was a prisoner.” You sat in an awkward silence before Paimon spoke up again.
“Hey - Paimon remembers that when you were talking earlier, you almost sounded like you were saying someone’s name.” she said to you.
“I’m - I’m looking for Diluc Ragnvindr of Mondstat - the Knights - or Dawn Winery - I don’t know where he is, actually. When I left, he was joining the Knights.” you said to them with a sudden hope that you hadn’t felt in years. Even in your journey, you hadn’t felt hopeful. There was always the chance of the Bakufu finding you and bringing you back or dying. But suddenly, you felt some hope.
“Oh - Master Diluc! Paimon didn’t know he used to be with the Knights of Favonius - that explains why he dislikes them so much now - but he does run Dawn Winery now!” Paimon said, floating happily. She paused for a moment - then looked like some gears had clicked in her head. “Wait a minute - you’re Master Diluc’s lost love!!”
“His what?” You asked. Lost love? Was that what the rumor was? But wait - if there was even a rumor, that meant there was potential that he still cared about you - still thought of you.
“What Paimon means to say is that Kaeya told us stories about when Diluc was… not like he is now. That he used to be much happier - and it was because of you.” the blonde traveler said to you.
“What - what do you mean? He’s changed?” You wanted to slap yourself - obviously he changed, it’s been years. But they made it seem like he was completely different - and he left the Knights? When Diluc was younger it was all he wanted to do, so he could protect people and help them. What had changed? You assumed you would find out.
“Paimon thinks we should take you to him to find out - Kaeya made it seem like you knew him better than anyone, so you would know more. Let’s go check Dawn Winery to see if he is there!” she said happily. You gave her a nod as you shakily stood up, feeling like you had a little bit more energy and walked with the traveler and her companion.
You learned about her on the way there. She woke up on the beach with no memory, but knew she was not from Tevyat. Her twin brother was missing and she was in search of The Seven to see if maybe that would be a way for her to find him, which explained why she wanted to go to Inazuma despite your warnings. But, she was Vision-less - a fact that shocked you as you could have sworn you vaguely remember her using Anemo during the fight. That little factoid made you feel a little better.
As you approached Dawn Winery, your stomach started twisting into knots. All of your anxieties came flooding back - would Diluc even want you still? Would he be appalled at the state of you? Would he be able to handle the extra baggage you came with now? Your mind reeled at Paimon babbled on about how maybe you would be good for Diluc to be happy, and how she was looking forward to the food the winery always had for them. You felt yourself fidgeting with the jacket, having put it back on to cover your uniform.
You saw his red hair from a mile away and froze in your steps. He had gotten taller, but god he looked the same. He pulled his hair back like he always had, muscles built out over the years. He couldn’t see you yet, talking to someone else across from him at the entrance of the winery. Lumine stayed by your side, the teenager having a big heart and concerned. However, Paimon floated on over to him.
“Master Diluc! Master Diluc! Paimon and Lumine have someone who was looking for you!” she said excitedly. You couldn’t help but admire the creature’s happiness, despite your nerves. You and Lumine walked forward as Diluc turned around - eyes going wide seeing you. Your breath hitched in your throat as you two made eye contact. It felt like all air in your lungs had just disappeared and you were unable to breathe.
Diluc slowly stepped towards you at first, not being able to believe his eyes. You could tell he was taking you in, observing your features and you to make sure that it really was you. You didn’t blame him for taking his time - you were unrecognizable from before. Your features had thinned out due to the years of neglect from the Bakufu, eyes sunken slightly inward and skin paled. You saw a flash of doubt flash in his eyes - or at least that’s what your brain wanted you to think - and you let out a sob. That seemed to do it for him as Diluc ran over to you in a flash, pushing anybody out of his way to wrap his arms around you.
It finally felt like you were home, in Diluc’s arms as he held you. More sobs wrecked your now trembling body, overcome with emotion as tears spilled onto his clothing. His grip on you was snug, but not too tight, treating you like you were glass and frail. He was warm, as he always was, while he held onto you like you’d disappear into thin air if he let go. You felt your knees give out, exhaustion starting to hit you, Diluc picking you up to support you. You tried to say something - to say anything to him, but the shaking and the exhaustion was becoming to much and eventually, you blacked out in his arms.
——
You woke up on a comfortable bed - so comfortable it almost didn’t feel right. You were sunk into one side with the blankets over you, body bare underneath. Had Diluc been the one to take your clothes off - did he see your scars? Your body suddenly felt good - there was no aching, you suddenly felt healthy? If that was the word for it. You shuffled in the bed, making an attempt to sit up, before you were promptly pushed back down.
“Lay down - please.” Diluc spoke to you. You turned your gaze over to him, laying next to you, half asleep and half dressed. You covered yourself underneath the blankets as he threw an arm over you, pulling you close to him despite trying to hide. “Don’t do that. Stop trying to hide from me.”
“Diluc - I’m - I’m not the same.” you stammered out. You felt his fingers dance over your bare skin and you gasped, instinctively jumping back. He retreated his touch upon seeing this, examining you again. “I’m sorry.”
“What did they do to you?” he asked. Panic bubbled inside of you once more as you tried to find the words to speak. You wanted to tell him everything. He deserved to know everything if he was still going to be with you. But for some reason, you couldn’t find the words. “Did the Bafuku do this - give you these?” His fingers grazed over the discolored scars on your body, purple marks from Electro attacks embedded into your skin forever.
“Yes - they would - they punished us when we fought back. All of us - but the females - they would - they’d come at night - ” Diluc let out a low snarl, understanding what you were implying without actually having to say it. “I tried to imagine it was you. Thinking of you is the only thing that kept me alive most days. It was awful - once Baal placed the orders to capture everyone with Visions, they found me in days. The painful part was that I was right at Liyue’s border - I was so close to getting out. That’s when I got this one.” You lifted your left arm, pointing to a series of purple numbers on your wrist.
“I don’t want to hear where they came from. It only makes me angrier that the damn Knights of Favonius didn’t even try to do anything to help.” Diluc said, cautiously wrapping a bare arm around you, testing the waters. You allowed him the contact - knowing that you were safe. You were safe with Diluc. You just needed to convince your brain the same thing, which would take time that he didn’t seem to mind. “It’s the middle of the night, let’s go back to bed. You need rest.” he said to you.
You gave Diluc a quick nod as you found yourself inching closer to his chest, resting your head on him. He was warm, as always, wrapping his arms completely around you and pulling you onto him. He never used to be one who liked someone on top of him, even you, and you had respected that - but now it seems like he wasn’t going to ever let you go again.
You didn’t mind as you attempted to fall into a dreamless sleep - but you were unlucky. Diluc was out in five minutes flat, but every time you tried to close your eyes flashes of the past would come back to haunt you. You weren’t sure if you got a wink of rest at all, until you found Diluc looking down at you, the sun out behind him. Your throat was dry and your face was wet. Had you had a nightmare? You weren’t sure if you had, since you weren’t even sure if you had fallen asleep at all.
“It’s just me - you’re okay. You were having a nightmare, I think.” he said, trying to say it in his calmest voice he could possibly muster. You blinked up at him confused.
“I - I don’t remember.” you said sadly, racking your brain to see if you could remotely remember, but having no such luck. Your brain was telling you that it didn't want you to remember, you think.
“You were screaming in your sleep. Almost shocked me, actually.” he said, throwing a light-hearted chuckle in at the end. You were not amused though, staring at him with wide eyes as you sat up slowly.
“I did? Are you okay?” you asked him. He looked at you like you had ten heads, confusing you until he spoke next.
“What - are you okay?”
“I think that answer is obvious enough.” You replied plainly. Diluc’s hand went to your chin, bringing your gaze to match his. His thumb lovingly and gently ran across your jawline, and you instinctively leaned into his touch. Slowly, you climbed up onto his lap, and he allowed you the comfort. “I think - I think I’ll be okay now, though. It’s just going to take some time.” You nuzzled yourself back into his chest as he hugged you snuggly, a hum leaving his lips.
“I’ll be here with you until it is, I swear it.” Diluc pressed a soft kiss on your forehead and you knew then that he meant it just like he did 10 years before.
*********************************************************************************
Slowly but surely, you started to heal, and it was all thanks to Diluc. The nightmares started to slowly fade away and with time, you were feeling happy again. You lived with him at Dawn Winery and took on some responsibilities to earn your keep (though Diluc always insisted that you didn’t need to do so), like helping the staff keep the place running and making sure that Diluc was on time to everything he needed to be. Which was a challenge, especially once you started to feel like your old self again (or what you could of your old self).
“One of these days, Charles is going to quit and then you’ll be stuck!” you said to him from on top of his desk, his lips on your neck as you let out a sigh. You weren’t quite mentally ready for much more intimacy, and he was okay with that, but you slowly had become re-accustomed to more touches. Diluc was letting you take the reins for what you were ready for and what you weren’t.
“He threatens to quit every day. He never does.” Diluc spoke against your skin, grunting as you finally pushed him away - and just in time, as Charles walked in to look for him. You hopped off and ran to find Adeline to see if she needed any help. Later on that day, you saw Charles again and he said that Diluc had been in a particularly angry mood for the past few hours. With a sigh, you had hunted him down, finding him in your bedroom.
“What’s wrong? Charles is going around saying you’re angry.” you said to him. Your partner let out a scoff as he turned back around to you, your eyes immediately going to his middle. You bit back a laugh.
“Don’t.” he hissed through gritted teeth, face burning as you stepped closer to him.
“It’s like you’re sixteen again.” you said with a small giggle. Before he could protest, you had him backed against the wall and his pants shoved down, solving the problem yourself. Charles saw you before he left for the night and had said Diluc was in a much better mood the rest of the day.
You had found out about Diluc’s night-time hero work as The Darknight Hero a week or two after you had returned. Originally, you fought him tooth and nail against it, for selfish reasons - but once he explained what had happened to him over the past 10 years, you gave it a rest and let him go on. With the death of his father and everything that had happened with the Knights and his brother afterward, you almost couldn’t blame him.
He had put a pause on it when you came back, but people started to talk and worry, and the Abyss Order picked up on it. He had to begin it again, and you worried every single night. Tonight in particular, he had been gone almost all night, and you were starting to worry. It was an hour or two more than what he was usually out, and you were alone in the Winery with your thoughts. To make things worse, it was storming outside so you couldn’t go out to look for him even if you wanted to.
A crack of thunder caused panic to rush through your chest - it sounded too much like Bakufu punishment for your comfort. You were snuggled under blankets, bringing your knees to your chest as you tried to push the memories away - another crack making an involuntary whimper leave your lips as the shakes came on. You hadn’t panicked like this in months - but the conditions of the storm and Diluc being gone for longer than he said brought it on, and you were nearly unable to control it.
The door opened and you jumped, not paying any mind to whoever it was that walked through the door as you fought to keep the memories at bay - flashes of them coming through in segments. You heard a curse and then running as you steadied some of your breathing, a hand coming to your face and forcing you to look at your lover. He wrapped his arm around you and brought you close to him, letting you soak up his warmth.
“You’re okay - you’re okay.” Diluc chanted to you softly. You nodded against his chest as you wrapped yourself around him back, his hand gently rubbing your back. He was right - you were okay. “I tried to get back as soon as I could after the weather rolled in, I’m sorry it took so long.” he apologized from above you.
“It’s okay.” you mumbled into him.
“No it’s not. I know how it gets - I should have known better.” he pressed a kiss to your hair after he spoke, guilt starting to rise up. Diluc had been overly cautious when it came to you since your return - within days he had memorized anything that sent you into a panic and was there to prevent it from happening. Until today, that is, hence the guilt. You let out a sigh as you relaxed into him.
“I know you want to protect me, but you can’t always do it, on top of everything else. I’ll be okay.” you said to him, taking your head out of his chest and bringing your lips to his.
He slowly reciprocated once his mind caught up to his body - realizing that you were initiating, something that hadn’t happened yet since you came back. His arms around you tightened as the kiss became deeper and more passionate, from a tiny little peck to open mouthed pants. Diluc was almost struggling to keep up with you, mind telling him to slow down for you but body betraying him, his need for you coming to the surface.
Diluc almost lost his mind when he had dragged you closer to him and heard a soft moan leave your lips as you landed on top of the tent in his pants. The moan seemed to be the signal that flipped the switch in Diluc’s head, as he flipped the two of you over, placing your back on the mattress as he towered above you.
“Are - are you sure?” Diluc asked, needing your complete consent before he went any further. A selfish part of him was hoping you’d say yes, but if you were to say no, he’d have no problem getting off you right now and going on with his night. It was all about if you were ready.
“Yes. Please Diluc.” you said back quietly. It was his turn to let out a moan at your begging for him as his lips went to your neck, softly leaving pecks up and down both sides.
“You tell me if anything - anything - is too much.” he spoke against your skin, coming back up to make sure that you understood. Diluc felt his cock twitch in his pants seeing your blissed out face, lust clouded over you from him. You let out a weak nod before he went back down with more vigor, sucking marks into your neck for all to see.
Fighting back wasn’t a thought in your mind as your body grew hot, clothes suddenly feeling restricting and your core in need of some friction. You hadn’t needed anybody in years, but right now, you needed him. Everything felt so right as his gloved fingertips pushed your shirt off your body, exposing your chest to him. The cool air made you shiver, but was soon replaced with the warmth of Diluc’s mouth pressing open-mouthed kisses to all the skin he could reach.
You managed to get Diluc to shrug his jacket off once you started to push it over his shoulders, pulling at his gloves next and discarding those. His mouth went back to its attack on your chest, finding one of your breasts and gently beginning to tug. A moan left your mouth as you tried to remember that your next mission was to get his shirt off. Your body was giving into him more and more as sparks of pleasure started to zoom through your veins and down to your core, slick starting to pool.
“Diluc…” you moaned out his name lustfully, spurring him on more. He pulled away from your nipple with a pop, panting as he almost ripped the rest of his shirt off his arms before going back down to pay attention to the other nipple. You continued to cry out, twisting underneath him as you filled with more and more need.
You felt his hands moving down your stomach, one resting on your hip while the other tucked under the waistband of your pants. For a moment, your mind started to reel and your heart raced - flashes of the past coming in. You were able to remember that you were with Diluc - you were safe, and you wanted him. Diluc noticed, immediately popping off you and gazing up at you.
“Should I - ”
“Don’t you dare stop.” you said, cutting him off. Throwing your arms around his neck, you brought his lips down to meet yours as he quickly continued what he was doing. Fingers dipped between your folds slowly, toying with your sensitive bud and making you moan against his mouth. With a small grunt back, Diluc slid two of his fingers into you slowly, beginning to pump. You sighed out his name as your hips ground into him, his lips moving back towards your neck as he panted against you.
“You’re so fucking perfect, baby.” he breathed against you, hips rutting against your thigh. You used your free hands to push your pants off, kicking them down your legs and leaving you completely exposed. The purple scars on your body reflected with the lightning outside the window and the candle light on the bedside while your body twitched with desire. Another moan left your lips as his fingers curled up into you, his thumb circling your bud making your walls tremble. “I need you. I need you.” he chanted into your neck, trying to use his freehand to fumble with his pants to push them down.
“Diluc…” you moaned as you started to meet his pumps, fucking yourself on his fingers trying to chase a high that you felt coming.
“I need to be inside you. Let me - I need it.” he stammered, continuing to finger fuck you until you said yes. You let out a cry as you felt yourself nearing the edge, body hot and sweat collecting on your skin. “Please baby - let me - ”
“Diluc, yes - fuck - ” As soon as the words left your mouth, he pulled his fingers out of you and finished pulling his pants down, kicking them off and letting them fall to the floor. You let out a whine at the loss before Diluc leaned down to kiss you again, gently using his knees to spread your legs wider and his hand that was in you to line his cock up with you. Nerves started to kick in ever so slightly, surpassing the need as you spoke out. “Be - slow - please.” you managed to say.
“Of course.” he said back, putting his lips back on yours as Diluc pushed the head of his cock into your hole. He let out a moan into your mouth, checking your face for any signs of discomfort before pushing in more. A whine left your lips at the feeling of being split open - it had been so long since you had someone inside of you that it almost felt like the first time again. Diluc pressed kisses to you, as some form of a distraction, as he continued to seethe himself inside until eventually, he was all the way in. “Okay?” he asked, bringing his gaze back up to yours. Diluc looked like he was absolutely holding back, restraining himself because you had asked. His face was red and he was panting above you already, heart racing with desire.
“Ye - yeah.” you said back to him. He let out a groan before he kissed you again, not moving inside just yet. His lips were warm against yours, swollen from all of the other kisses he had given you so far. Diluc wrapped his arms around you and brought you close to him, pressing your bodies together as you felt your need re-awaken. Your body was on edge, having him inside you but not moving - and you needed him yet again. “Diluc - you can move - please.” you begged.
“Fuck, yes.” he groaned into your mouth as slowly he started to rock his hips into yours, cock sliding in and out of you with ease. When he started moving, everything from before fully woke up again and you felt your muscles start to tense up, gripping onto his shoulders desperately as your moans started to fill the air. He took that as signal to start going faster and eventually, he started thrusting harder, with more purpose. A cry left your lips at the change of pace, feeling your body react by trying to move your hips to meet his.
“Faster Diluc - please faster.” you cried out. Your lover let out a loud moan at your plea, hiking your legs over his shoulders as he fucked into you harder, cock curving up inside you and hitting the spot that had you crying out his name. You started to shake under him, a warmth pooling in you that felt like it was about to bubble over. Diluc took your lips in his again, drinking up your moans as he pounded himself into you, the bed creaking and the sound of his hips meeting yours filling the room. You felt his cock growing harder inside of you with every thrust, your resolve close to breaking. “D - Diluc - Diluc!” you cried, tears streaming down your cheeks as pleasure started to overcome you.
“So good - you’re so good to me - so - perfect - fuck!” he said to you in a haze, a wanton moan leaving his lips as he felt your walls start to flutter around his cock. You let out a cry as you felt yourself nearly there - the pressure was bubbling and you were about to snap as the length of Diluc’s cock hit you right every time, his moans music to your ears and making your insides shutter. “Ah - ah - come for me, baby - come for me!” Diluc begged, now chasing a release by making you get to yours. You let out a whine - feeling yourself getting towards that edge - then a scream, feeling Diluc bring his hand down between your bodies to start rubbing at your clit. “Fuck you’re gonna - come - come!” he moaned.
“Diluc - Diluc - I’m - fuck!” you screamed out his name as white hot pleasure took over your body, feeling your walls finally clench down on him inside of you. Your eyes rolled into the back of your heard as you kept moaning, body arching against his and core still convulsing as Dilic continued to fuck you, now with a pace near brutal that had your orgasm being wrung out, overstimulation nearing. “Di - Diluc - ” you stammered as his fingers rubbed harder on your spent nub.
“Fuck - I’m - I’m gonna cum - so hard - inside - baby - ” Diluc let out one last loud moan as his hips slapped against yours, his cock twitching inside of you as his seed buried itself deep. He let out moans as he bucked his hips up into you, your twitching core milking his cock as he all but collapsed on top of you. “Fuck -” he breathed out into your neck, dragging your hips close again so he could keep pumping his high in your body.
You felt spent - exhausted. Eventually, you felt his cock stop twitching inside of you and Diluc pulled out, collapsing next to you. He brought the blankets over your bodies and pulled you close to him, pressing kisses to your temple.
“Are you okay?” he asked you. You turned to look at him, eyes wide with concern. You gave him a smile and pressed a kiss to his lips. Even after all that, he was still worried about you. You could argue that's what you loved most about him - that under the facade of not caring, he cared a lot - he was an emotional guy.
“More than okay.” you said back to him. He let out a hum as his hand trailed down to your abdomen - the area where you had the most scars from the Bakufu. Suddenly, you got what he was saying.
“I - well - I came inside. Are you sure?” he asked again. You didn’t really think about that in the moment, honestly. You weren’t sure how you felt about that one hundred percent - but you knew that you didn’t entirely mind it. You had gone through hell to get back with him because you wanted to be with him - you wanted to be with him completely.
“Yeah. I’m sure - I want to be with you, Diluc. That means… everything.” you said back. He nodded back down to you as he kissed you again, keeping his hand on you down below. When he stopped, he pressed your forehead to his lovingly.
“To everything.”

“Sarah, I’m not sure.”
“Please? I want you to meet everyone!” She plops on the bed next to you.
“You know I don’t like meeting new people and I’m shy!”
“Yeah, but I’ll be there. It’s just a nice day on the boat to meet everyone since I’m with John B now.”
You sigh and then groan, “Fine, but I’m bringing a book to read.”
~
“Sarah, I’m still not sure about this.” You say as she pulls up, beginning to freak out. You and her had grew up together and now that she was with John B she wanted you to meet him and the rest of the pogues. However, you were not a fan of making friends with new people. Crowds and new people were not your cup of tea. You’d much rather be left alone in your own little world with a book. Of course, Sarah was the complete opposite and loved attention, which is why you have no idea how you became friends with her.
“You’ll be fine! They’ll love you, y/n. I promise.” She reassures, smiling. “They’re excited to meet you.”
“I’m sure they are.” You mumble, following her and slip your glasses on. You could see the pogues at the dock near the boat.
“Hey guys!” Sarah announces as the two of you make your way down the dock.
“Hey.” They greet. Sarah gives John B a kiss before turning to you, “This is y/n, y/n this is John B, Kie, Pope and the blonde is JJ.” She points to each one.
“Hey.” You gave a small wave as they repeat hey back.
“nice to meet you, y/n.” John B says, “Sarah’s told us a lot about you.”
“Oh great.” You laugh a little.
“All good things I promise!” Sarah laughs.
~
After everyone is settled on the boat, John B finds a nice place for the boys to fish. You grab your book out of your bag and get comfortable.
JJ fixes the bait on the hook and glances over at you. He wasn’t too happy about adding another kook to the group. Sarah was enough of a kook, but he realized right away, you weren’t like her at all. Quite the opposite. He watched as John B started to hand you a beer, but you shook your head, “I don’t drink.. Thank you though.”
You, a kook, don’t drink? He thought all kooks were alcoholics. You were still in your coverup, even after the girls had took theirs off as soon as they got on the boat. You didn’t say much the rest of the day, unless you were spoken too. You were quiet and shy, nothing like the kooks he knew.
“Whatcha reading?” JJ asked as he sat next to you.
You marked your place, before glancing over at JJ, blushing. He was handsome and shirtless; his hair wet from taking a dip, “The Great Gatsby.”
He nods, “Is it.. good?”
“Yeah. One of my favorites.” An awkward silence fell amongst the two of you. “So, do you read?” You surprised yourself by asking. You weren’t one to make conversation.
He chuckles, shaking his head, “No. Never been a reader.. more of partier.” He glances at the front of the boat and then back at you, “Want to fish?”
“Oh no. I don’t.. I don’t know how.” You blush.
You were too cute, he thought to himself. “Come on, I’ll teach you.” He takes the book from your hands and puts it in your bag before standing and holding his hand to you.
“No no, it’s okay.” You say, shaking your head.
“Y/n, I won’t bite.” He smirks, “Only if you want me too.”
You blush again before taking his hand and standing. He leads you to the front of the boat and begins showing you how to bait your hook and cast the line.
He steps behind you, his hands over yours on the fishing pole, “Just pull back..” He moves his body with yours, showing you what to do “And cast the line.”
You can feel his hot breath on your neck and in all honesty, it was the closest you’d been to a boy. You glanced over your shoulder at him.
His hands had yet to move from yours, “And then if you feel a tug, reel him in,”
You give a small nod and he steps away from you, stepping next to you, “You really have never fished before?”
You shake your head, looking over at him, “Never.”
He smirks, “Well, you’re a natural.”
“Thank you.” You mumble quietly.
He tilts his head at you, intrigued, “You’re shy, you read, and you don’t drink.. unlike any other kook I’ve ever known. You’re sure you’re not a robot?”
You laugh and give a small shrug, “I’m fully of surprises I guess.”
He chuckles and watches as the pole dips a little, “Looks like you got a bite. Reel him in!” He’s back behind you in seconds, ready to help.
You struggle reeling in the fish and notice is pop out of the water, “I caught one!”
He grabs the net and pulls it out, “You did it! Look at you, you’re a pro.” He pulls the fish off the hook and holds it between his thumb and index finger, “He’s a big one.”
You smile as you watch him, “I can’t believe I caught one.”
He glances up at you, “You want to hold him? I can get a picture.”
You quickly shook your head, “Oh gosh, no.”
“come on.” He holds the fish over to you, “He won’t bite.”
Sarah snaps pictures of the two of you, looking at John B, “They’ll thank me for these when they get married.” She looks back at the two of you, “JJ! y/n! Smile!”
JJ looks at Sarah before stepping to you and wrapping his free arm around your shoulder, smiling at the camera.
You can’t help but blush again, smiling at her, “So.. what do we do now?” You ask, motioning to the fish.
“Well, we can let him go, or I can put him in the cooler and we can cook him later.”
You frown, shaking your head, “Let him go.”
He chuckles, “I knew you’d say let him go.” He reaches over the boat and lets him go, “Now he’s free to live the rest of his life.”
“Let’s do it again.” You smile, grabbing the fishing pole and holding it to him.
He smiles back, taking the fishing pole and baiting it for you. He liked you. He was starting to see you come out of your shell and liked he wasn’t right about you being another spoiled kook. You weren’t like them and he liked that about you.

You trudged down the empty hallway, your body slumped with exhaustion and feet hurting from wearing the ridiculously high heels to impress a man who never showed up. The silence in the empty halls was deafening unlike the crowded diner which was buzzing with lovestruck couples on the fine evening of Valentine’s Day. When you reached his door, you were barely hanging in there. Hesitantly, you knocked twice, immediately cursing yourself for fucking up his Valentines Day as well.
“Y/N?” Jensen tilted his head in confusion at your dejected state. “What happened?”
“I am done with dating.” A stray tear rolled down your cheek as you replied. Jensen pursed his lips as he opened the door wider to let you in. He threw an arm over your shoulder, guiding you towards the couch.
“Mike was a douchebag.” He said, as you plopped down on the blue couch.
“His name is Mark.” You rolled your eyes at him, “I dressed up all for nothing. I am done trying to find the perfect man. I will get a cat and become a cat lady. At least it will show up when we have a cat date with cat food and pizza.”
“You can't just swore off dating because Macaroni didn't show up.” Jensen smirked. “You just haven't met the right person yet.”
“I got stood up thrice within a span of two months. I surely know how to pick them.”
“Sweetheart, I'm so sorry but I know you'll definitely meet the right person. It's just a matter of time.” He rubbed your arm as you snuggled closer to him. “Should we order takeout? I am starving.”
“Mhm. I wouldn't mind some chinese. I'm sorry that I fucked up your plans for the night.” You said.
“I didn't exactly have anything better to do. Spending time with you is much better than third wheeling Jared and Gen.” He chuckled.
“What am I doing wrong, Jay? Something is definitely wrong with me or the entire male population is a douchebag.” You sighed, as Jensen took out his phone to place an order in your favourite Chinese restaurant.
“Y/N/N, nothing's wrong with you and there are good men out there in the world.” He said.
“They are all taken.” You replied, nonchalantly.
“I'm not.” Jensen said and your heart skipped a beat at his words.
“Maybe I was too blind to notice it,” you wanted to say instead you blurted out, “You're my best friend, Jensen.”
His hands dropped to the side as he visibly tensed up. An unbearable silence followed the awkward conversation. You could barely look at the actor beside you who was staring off into the distance, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. Fortunately you were both saved from further conversation by the delivery guy.

You bit down on your lip to stop the yawn that was threatening to leave as you pretended to listen to the man in front of you complain about his work life. You hummed along to the man’s words as your mind reeled back to that night at Jensen's house. You still didn't know why you didn't speak about your true feelings. Even though his little confession didn't break you two up, whenever you used to hang out, a discomfort lingered in the air and so you had ditched the weekly movie night the day before.
After another painfully long hour, your extremely bad date came to a very fortunate end. As a sign of politeness, you had agreed with Luke, your date, when he had offered to drop you at your doorstep. With no promises for a second date, you had left Luke’s car after successfully dodging his attempt at a kiss. You sprinted across the usually empty hallway and found yourself in front of Jensen's room. You knocked at his door.
“So I was on a date and oh god, time wasn't passing by at all! Luke was such a boring guy. I surely do know how to pick the guys- and I'm so sorry I didn't come yesterday for our weekly movie night-” You rambled on as soon as Jensen opened the door without giving him a chance to pitch in his two cents.
“It's okay.” He finally spoke but his words were soon forgotten when you saw the half-naked brunette standing behind him, glaring at you.
“I'm sorry,” You turned your attention to the man in front and noticed the swollen lips, tousled hair and his unbuttoned jeans, “I didn't know you had company.”
“Next time try to call before you barge in complaining about yet another bad date.” Jensen grumbled, rolling his eyes before he shut his door to your face. You stared at the closed door, crestfallen as tears started to pool in your eyes. You made your way back to your room which was on the next floor in the same apartment building all the while wondering if your insecurities had really messed up a good friendship.
Tumblr media
Jensen had neither heard nor seen you since he had closed the door on your face. He winced every time he remembered how rudely he had pushed you out of his apartment when Jessica was over. He was finally trying to move on since now he knew how you felt. Jensen was definitely hurt when you made it clear that you didn't reciprocate his feelings but he didn't hate you. You were still his best friend so it hurt when you had started to distance yourself from him, even ditching him on your weekly movie night. All that bottled up frustration had turned into anger when you had knocked on his door the next night to complain about your boring date but he still regretted the way he had told you off.
“Is Y/N going to come to Gen’s party?” Jared asked his tv brother during one of the takes.
“I don't know. Why don't you ask her yourself?” Jensen snapped as he went back to reading his script.
“What happened?” The hazel eyed actor frowned at his friend's behaviour.
“I haven't talked to her in weeks nor have I seen her.” Jensen grumbled.
“You two are like the Siamese twins and now you are saying you haven't even talked to her? Dude, what happened?” Jared asked. “Maybe you should talk to her.” He said after Jensen opened up about what happened.
“I have called her. Dozens of times. She is not picking up.” He scoffed.
“Gen is going to invite her I suppose. Maybe you can talk to her then.” Jared shrugged as they were called back on to set.
Jared was right about everything. You were invited to Gen’s backyard birthday party and so was Jensen. You had hesitated before you finally made up your mind to go to the Padaleckis' because you knew someday you had to face Jensen. When you had returned home that night, you had realised why no one was ever good enough for you since the perfect person for you was right in front of you but your insecurities had made you blind. You knew you had missed your chance when you had caught him with the brunette but what hurt more was when he shoved you out of his apartment.
Jensen had called you a dozen times but you hadn't picked up. You didn't know what to say and the longer you stayed away from him, your feelings for him grew stronger so instead you started to avoid him like plague, trying your best to move on.
The clinking sound of bottles behind you pulled you out from your deep thought.
“Hey.” Jensen awkwardly said.
“Hi.” You returned the same awkwardness.
“You weren't picking up my calls. I'm sorry for the other night.” He said, his gaze quickly dropping to the floor.
“It's all right.”
“No it's not. Then you wouldn't have avoided me.” He said. “I know things have been awkward since that night but no hard feelings. It's perfectly okay if you don't feel the same. I just want my best friend back.”
“I do feel the same.” You muttered quietly which made him look up to you. Jensen stared at you dumbfounded.
“Then why didn't you tell me?” He finally said.
“I panicked. I got scared because you know me, I don't do well with men and I thought if we didn't work out, I would lose you.” Your lips trembled ever so lightly as you stared into his green eyes.
“You won't ever lose me.” Jensen walked up to you, “Even if things don't work out relationship-wise. I will always be your best friend.”
“I don't wanna lose you. You're my person, Jay. So I lied not realising that I had pushed you away myself.” You said.
“I will always be your person just like you're mine but I can't fight this feeling anymore. I think I'm in love with you and I don't know what to do.” He said while walking up to you.
“Maybe you do know now.” He leaned down, cupping your face, his lips hovering over yours. You closed your eyes, feeling his hot breath fan against your skin but then you felt him pull back. You opened your eyes as you saw him stare at you with a look of regret in his eyes.
“I can't.” Jensen sighed.
“Why?”
“I have a girlfriend.” You gaped at him, heart broken into millions of pieces. Before Jensen could get another word out, you fled the scene.
“Hey Y/N.” Gen beamed. “Are you going home already?”
“Yeah I think I'm coming down with something. Sorry Gen. Happy birthday, again.” You said and wasted no time to get into your car and quickly drove back to your home.

Jensen had repeatedly called you since you had fled the Padaleckis’ house but you hadn't picked up. The first two days you had hardly left your house. You had been sobbing uncontrollably. You had bared your heart and soul to the man you had fallen head over heels only to get your heart broken.
You were lying on your couch, watching a sappy romantic movie when you heard a knock on your door. Pausing the movie midway you got up to open the door.
“Hi.” The green eyed man spoke quiet as when you opened the door. The sight of him brought tears to your eyes again. He was carrying a box of chocolate and a bottle of wine. “I would have brought flowers but I know how sad you get when they start to wilt.”
“What're you doing here?”
“I heard a guy hurt my best friend so I'm here with chocolates and wine.” He smirked. You snatched the box of chocolates from his hands as you held the door wide open.
“Sappy romantic comedy? Oh sweetheart, want me to kick the guy's ass? He deserves it. No one hurts my best friend.” He said as he pulled you into a tight hug. The intoxicating smell of his cologne finally breaking you. “I'm so sorry.”
“I'm so sorry too.” You sniffled as you looked up at him. “Our timings sucked.”
“It did. Can we start afresh?” Jensen smiled.
“What about your girlfriend? I don't wanna be your ‘slutty mistress’.” You said, quoting Grey’s Anatomy which made him chuckle.
“I broke up with her. I tried to date other girls to keep you off my mind but there wasn't a single damn second when you didn't cross my mind because I am totally, completely, hopelessly in love with you.” He grinned as he leaned down to kiss your cheek.
“I am in love with you too, Jay.” You said, “Kiss me.” Jensen dropped his head as he leaned into you, capturing your lips with his. His hands travelled all the way down your body before stopping at your waist. He gripped you tightly and pulled you closer, your hands landed on his biceps as you tried to steady yourself. His teeth grazed your lips lightly, making you moan into his mouth. Your hands left his biceps, hooking themselves at the nape of his neck, your fingers tugging at his hair, eliciting a groan out of him.
“Are you trying to turn me on or are you just that oblivious?” He growled into your ear.
“Is it working?” You smirked. Jensen growled once more into your ear before pulling away from you. He effortlessly picked you up, your legs hooking behind him as he went towards the bedroom.

Panting hard you tried to come down from your high as you felt him go soft before he pulled out. He placed a chaste kiss on your lips and rolled off to the side. His chest heaved as he tried to control his breathing, a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Lost in an euphoric state, you didn't notice when Jensen had left the bed to get a cloth to clean you up. After a few minutes, he returned back to bed. You laid there in his arms, naked, basking in the afterglow of what was actually the best sex of your life. Jensen was tracing tiny, imperfect circles on your arm as a sigh of contentment left his lips. Your back flushed against his chest, smiling, you spoke.
“We might be each other’s last first kiss.” You turned towards, kissing the corner of his mouth.
“No more bad dates. No more bad first kisses. You're mine.” Jensen whispered.
“You're it. You're my person. My world is a better place with you in it.” You said, snuggling against his warm chest. “I love you.”
