"Before enlightenment, no one can rely on strength. Enlightenment comes across by itself, and enlightenment can only be helped by a ray of enlightened power." Dogen Zenji
Tumblr media
[Dogen Zenji (19 January 1200 - 22 September 1253) was a Japanese monk, writer, poet, philosopher and Zen master, and the founder of the Soto sect in Japan.]
Being lost and being enlightened are like two sides of the same coin, in fact they are one and the same. So you don't have to be in panic to seek enlightenment, but when you are lost, you should just be lost.
You may try the hardest to “enlightenment, enlightenment” and think, for example, that we must do Zazen sitting meditation, read Buddhist scriptures, and so on.
But it is a force beyond enlightenment. Enlightenment comes to you far beyond enlightenment. In other words, Dogen teaches us that enlightenment has nothing to do with the efforts we make to try our hardest to find a way to become enlightened. Enlightenment comes one day out of the blue. So if you are lost now, then do not hesitate to be lost. Not ‘more lost’, but ‘firmly lost’.
It's okay to be ‘just lost.’ Just think so and just be lost.

[possible spoilers if you're watching s6 for the first time]
okay i hate everything about sayid's scene in the temple. first of all, what do we think about dogen? i don't know how i feel about him, and by "him" i mean the way he's written. second of all, on a poetic level i like the fact that sayid shot ben who then was brought to the temple to be saved and then ben's father shot sayid who then was brought to the temple to be saved... very good, I like that... but on a more rational level i kinda hate the way the show framed the "came back wrong" trope within the narrative... i dunno, i gotta think about that, there's something in here that i don't like at all. like, i already said somewhere on here that i don't like the association between ben and sayid via their supposed "shared", unsalvageable evilness. i see they're continuing this thread without considering how different sayid and ben are.

"A Zen Master's life is one continuous mistake"
~ Dogen Zenji
I attended sesshin with Roshi Hogen, once upon a time. One of the attendees asked, "Roshi Hogen, you are the Abbott of a Buddhist monastery and took vows of celibacy - and yet you have a wife and children. How do you explain this?"
He pondered for a minute or two and then replied, "Perhaps I failed."

“When the old plum tree suddenly opens, the world of blossoming flowers arises. At the moment when the world of blossoming flowers arises spring arrives. There is a single blossom that opens five blossoms. At this moment of a single blossom, there are three, four, and five blossoms, hundreds, thousands, myriads, billions of blossoms, countless blossoms. These blossomings are not-being-proud-of one, two, or countless branches of the old plum tree... Blossoming is the old plum tree’s offering.
The old plum tree is within the human world and the heavenly world. The old plum tree manifests both human and heavenly worlds in its treeness. Therefore hundreds and thousands of blossoms are called both human and heavenly blossoms. Myriads and billions of blossoms are buddha-ancestor blossoms. In such a moment, "All the buddhas have appeared in the world is shouted, "The ancestor was originally in this land" is shouted.”
— Eihei Dogen. Song era. Studied as a monk in 5 of the different sects of Chan Buddhist Monastic Universities of the time in China, and returned to open his own school in Japan. Dogen was a prolific and inspired author. z Is considered the first ancestor of the Soto lineage.

‘ Even preparing a meal is also a zen practice ’
- Dogen
[Dogen Zenji (26 January 1200 - 22 September 1253) was a Japanese monk, writer, poet, philosopher and Zen master, and the founder of the Soto sect in Japan. He innovated Japanese Buddhist practice through Zen in the early 13CE and wrote the Shobogenzo ("Treasury of the True Dharma Eye"), a book of Buddhist thought that is the foundation of the recent mindfulness philosophy.]
Young Dogen travelled to the Song dynasty to study Buddhism in his youth. What he experienced and was moved by in the Zen temples of the Song dynasty was the discovery that Zen Buddhism is ‘Zen for life’. It is the realisation that not only sitting in a Zen temple, but all of everyday life is a form of practice.
There are many anecdotes about this from Dogen. One of them is the episode of Dogen's encounter with an old chef at a Buddhist monastery, described in his book of "Instructions for the Cook (Tenzo Kyōkun)".
While Dogen was on board a ship in the harbour waiting for permission to land, an elderly monk came to the harbour to buy foodstuffs from Japan. He invited the old monk to his cabin, offered him a cup of tea and asked him about his life. He said, " It's been 40 years since I left my hometown in Shu, and I'm now over 60 years old, but I have to walk another 20 km (12 miles) back to the temple to prepare food."
Dogen said, " the 'Temple of King Ashoka’ is a splendid temple, so I'm sure one of your fellow monks will be able to prepare meals. We will treat you tonight, so please stay here."
The old monk replied, " You don't seem to understand what the practice is all about", and laughed out loud.
The young Dogen did not understand that cooking a meal is also a form of Zen practice.
However, from the point of view of the enlightened state, everything, including cooking and eating, is a part of practice. It is not what we live for, but the very act of living is a practice. In other words, life itself is Zen practice.
Dogen returned to Japan and remained at Kenninji Temple, where he regretted that the Kenninji monks took the preparation of meals so casually and realising that the gap with the Song dynasty. He then wrote "Instructions for the Cook (Tenzo Kyōkun)", detailing the importance of the chef at a Buddhist monastry and the guidelines for its duties.
