I said this elsewhere but
not to be That Guy but I don't really see the point of moving platforms anymore.
There is no where we can hide on the internet from the silicon valley bros. There just isn't. Patreon is VC-funded and could announce tomorrow that oh of course they've been partnered with Midjourney for months already. Twitter actively scraps everything for AI learning. And even if you trusted the other big players like FB/IG to tell the truth about shit, people are going to use these platforms for datasets anyway. They'll just do it quietly and hope no one notices.
And places like cohost or whatever-- honestly, if it makes you feel safer/better, go for it, but I don't think cohost has the sway or capital to build the type of legal team you need to fight against scrapers. Hell, you wanna retreat into private discords? Discord wants in on AI too.
Everyone big is already dealing in AI, and everyone small doesn't even have a seat at the table. In my opinion, we are all collectively holding out for Brussels or any of the many court cases to do something about this shit, because it's no longer a thing we can just hide from.
I'm going to keep my writing on the AO3 because they are the odd case of having an actual legal team in place for this shit. For artists, I have nothing but sympathy. I suggest glazing and nightshading literally everything you post.
But beyond that, I'm unsure what we can do. This is a matter for legislation. Silicon Valley doesn't care if we all go to cohost, and even less scrupulous data-crawlers will just grab our shit from there too.
So I'll be here.

Today I learned of Tumblr's plan to begin (or continue) selling user content to OpenAI and Midjourney, which is the last straw for me and my presence on the site. Regardless of their claims that users can opt out of this, I frankly just don't believe them.
I've used Tumblr since 2010 when I started photography, and this blog is the largest existing archive of my work on the internet. It's a liability for me to continue to allow it to be hosted on a site that is now actively contributing to the theft of art, directly from artists. I know my photos have already been stolen, repurposed and claimed countless times over the years from Tumblr and other sites, but I have to draw a line here. I will unfortunately be removing all my past work from this blog, perhaps something I should have done when the suspicions first arose about Automattic's greed.
Many aspects of my creative career have been negatively impacted by AI already, I just see this as one less path in which to be exploited.
That being said I want to thank all of you for the support over the decade plus I've been active on here, I stuck around much longer than most because of my appreciation for a website that was a huge influence to my early creativity as a kid. I still think it was the best format for social media, and I really am going to miss Tumblr and the creative community it used to be.
I will still do my best to utilize this blog as a place to make announcements about any new projects, such as my upcoming book I aim to release at the end of the year.
You can still find me and my (Glaze/Nightshade protected) work elsewhere on the internet at Instagram, Twitter, and my website.
So long,
Brendon

hello!
so, as is observable from my reaction to the news about tumblr and midjourney, i'm in a bit of a doomer mindset about the whole situation. i kinda left it a bit unclear as to where this blog would go from here, so i just thought i'd clarify~
i will not be deleting this blog, nor will i be deleting all of my posts-- but i think i will stop posting on here for the foreseeable future. life is kind of getting me down a lot already, and the prospect of continuing to make and post art in an environment where people's works are treated with increasingly less respect isn't something that has any appeal to me anymore, especially since i'm kind of struggling with drawing enough as is.
perhaps if my relationship with art improves or if i become more of a prolific artist then i might return to posting regularly on socials, but as it stands, i don't see much of a point in posting. my activity is infrequent enough anyways, so i don't think it will particularly matter if i stop LMAO
so, with that being said, i don't really have any 'here's where you can find me' links, save for these two
i will still participate in art fight yearly and i still stream art on twitch occasionally (though i might have my gamer arc on there eventually)
i'm not leaving the site (i still have my main and my selfship blog), but if you're interested in exclusively my art, that's all i have to offer, sorry ;w;
also: about people who say 'just glaze/nightshade your art!' i know this is a lazy opinion, but like, if i have to run my art through a bazillion different filters and programs and websites on the off chance it might make it poison to AI, i won't lie... i just don't think it's worth the effort. same with slapping a big ugly watermark on all of my art. like, what is even the point at that point
this isn't to say that artists shouldn't be doing those things-- please protect yourself and your works if you are willing and able! but i am just a rather defeatist person.
and i also know that my D tier artstyle isn't the kind of thing that is usually pulled to train on anyways, but the bottom line is that this whole situation is the last straw on an activity (art) that has been steadily demoralizing to me for years already. i don't want even the slightest possibility of contributing more to this shitty craze than i already have (unwillingly, considering data has probably been scraped already in years past). if i draw, it will exclusively be for myself, or as gifts for others
maybe i will change my mind about all of this one day- but honestly, my art pace already has slowed to an absolute crawl. i don't want this to get too vent-y, but... it's MARCH and i only have 4 completed pieces done this year. in reality, i only have one finished piece from this year! because the other 3 were wips at various stages from last year. in general i am kind of washed up and my passion is gone and my skills are lacking. so. . . not like anybody will be missing much! i was looking at stuff i drew in like 2020 and honestly there's barely a difference. i'm the most stagnant mf on the planet. and now i'm looking at the new wave of all of these 14 year olds that are actual god tier artists and i am like. genuinely so happy for them like i love that and they slay but GOD it makes me want to kill myself even more than i already do LMFAO. so, yeah

So I just saw the post you reblogged about A.I on Tumblr and I'm not sure what to think. I want to get back into post my Inuyasha art but now I'm worried about this whole ordeal. On the one hand I don't want to give up making and sharing my art w/ others (esp. Since I haven't in a while), but now I'm scared about it being stolen and other artists I love giving up posting. This whole debate with A.I has me so confused and scared and I really don't know whats going on. I'm also curious about what you will do if this deal goes through. Do you plan on using Glaze or something similar?
Tumblr media
Come sit with me, anon cause to be frank, I'm trying to take that particular post with a grain of salt. I hope it's wrong, because it wasn't long ago we were hit with "oh my god tumblr is closing where is everyone going" and we're still here. But I won't lie, it pisses me off greatly that it's even a possibility.
I completely understand, and I say - go ahead and post it. Don't give up on art because a bunch of fuck bois with no talent in their short hairs decide that generative technology is the way to go. I honestly hope that it crashes and burns in the next couple years, if not sooner. It had potential before fat old men in suits decided that they had to have more money than they know what to do with. I'm not quitting, because it's my income. It's my joy. I am also fueled by spite, because if I wasn't I wouldn't be here right now.
Art getting stolen is always going to be a thing to worry about, even before AI unfortunately. People will repost without credit and still take credit when that post gets more traction. Create a watermark and be a menace to the reposters, I say. There's Glaze, like you mentioned, and Nightshade. I've heard you have to do them in that order for it to be effective.
You can also search haveIbeentrained.com to see if your work has been picked up and request for it to be pulled from the databases. I've found three more of mine this evening. One was one of my mother's paintings.
I've already erased 15 years of work off the internet when I deleted my deviantart gallery at the end of 2022. Some of that work is so old it was never shared anywhere else. I may not even have that work anymore. If the deal were to go through, I'm not deleting my blog. It's been active since 2012; there's no way I could go through and find every art post and delete it to repost glazed/nightshade versions. It won't affect the reblogs. I haven't personally tried Glazing anything yet because I'm not sure if it'd even be effective with my style, but it's something to try when time allows.
I'm gonna say it again - don't give up on your art. Whether you're doing it as a career (I dare someone say art is a sidehustle, this is not MLM and I am not some 2-bit influencer) or because it is something you just enjoy doing for the hell of it, you should continue. I've seen people give up entirely on art in the last year, and it makes me mad. If art is something you want to do, you shouldn't let anyone make you feel like you can't.
And if you need someone to rally behind you and cheer you on, you've got me in your corner 💕 Hell, feel free to tag me in some of your art, if you'd like!

a lot of people have been leaving tumblr altogether, so i'm going to try to be more active on my cohost! i'll still be here but it's becoming increasingly obvious that putting all of my eggs in this particular basket is a bad idea
i'm not leaving tumblr. i'll probably be just as active as always, at least for the time being. however, i'm not sure if i'll be able to keep posting my art here, since opting out of ai bullshit just acts as a suggestion and i don't have the time (or the computer specs) to nightshade and glaze everything i post. at the very least i'll probably post my art on cohost before here

F you Tumblr and every company joining the sludge of generative AI
If you want to follow my art, come find me on BlueSky.
So much for starting this account up again eh? What's the point of even being online anymore when my data is just taken by companies to make a buck.
Alternatively you can sign up for my Newsletter to be reminded I exist every couple months or so.
I also have a blog on my personal website with an RSS feed you can use. It's not that active because I'm used to just updating BlueSky, but these days it seems like it's all going to crap.
I Glaze everything I post online, but it's time to start Nightshading it all, too. So tired of this. And yes I know there's an "opt out" but I don't trust it. Meta also did the "opt out" form and then announced they're trying their own AI anyway - that includes Instagram and Threads btw!

With (credible) rumors about tumblr soon selling its data to midjourney for AI training, it truly is a peculiar situation for everyone on this website.
Personally, it's a choice between yeeting all my art off the platform à la twitter or keep it, but with some asterisks attached for the future.
For one deleting it all won't actually delete the post (and thus art) itself, due to how tumblr works. Even now glazing everything in post is useless, because edits don't carry over in existing reblogs.
So deleting the blog is mostly off the table.
But what now?
It's a bit hard to say for me. As I do have some attachment to this hellsite. That's why even when I was mostly on twitter, I kept being somewhat active here
But as time goes one, the good will I had keeps getting stretched and now this is the final straw for me.
Obviously, going forward, every picture on this blog will be glazed, nightshaded when the webversion is out. Sadly, I think this also means the update frequency will decrease a lot, as glazing will add a not insignificant amount of time to the posting process.
I'll also start using tumblr less, either migrating to other websites like bluesky etc. or just become less active on social media as a whole. I'll still be in the qijiu week discord though, so you can find me and my scattered art there too.
Otherwise, when I remember, I post occasional stuff on ko-fi as well.(even have a sorted gallery of sorts, so it's a nice place to have things sorted)
I'll link all those places below.
Anyway I thank everyone who has read so far and the support I got on tumblr. bluesky (x) non BL bluesky (x) QiJiu Week Server (x) ko-fi (x)

El's Master list
Hi, call me El. I post cod shit, and occasionally fics. I talk to my mutuals a lot. like A LOT a lot. I don't post anything spicier than suggestive, go to mt sideblog @what-in-the-gloobie-glob for that, but don't expect much
Um I'm hard to offend, so if you wanna send me hatemail at least be creative :) if you send anyone else hatemail you're not allowed on my blog
a few rules before we start:
homophobes, transphobes, racists, pedophiles, ableists, zoophiles, and zionists are not welcome here. you are not welcome if you are just being an asshole in general, not saying you have to be nice, but don't be mean. Additionally I DO NOT support the use of AI in any art from including writing and audio. Here is the list
now that the necessary info is out of they way. feel free to make any request, my askbox is always open and anon is left on (dangerous I know), I cannot guarantee that any ask will be answered with any efficiency, but it will be answered eventually.
while I mentioned all the people who are not allowed on my blog, please know that the only problem I actively talk about is homophobia and transphobia. this DOES NOT diminish any of the other problematic topics, they are simply the ones that apply most to my blog. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET ABOUT ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS!!!
I do have a link to a bunch of downloaded Ao3 fics, fics that I have personally read, in the event that the website goes down for an extended period of time again (DDoS of 2023). there IS a link to give me suggestions for fics to download, only taking completed fics.

Stumbled on this - so for anyone out of the loop part of Reddit blowing up last year was because it was making use of it's API prohibitively expensive for the average person to use, killing off a lot of (superior) third party apps used to both browse and moderate the platform on mobile.
I don't know if it was stated explicitly at the time, but for me the writing was on the wall - this was purely to fence off Reddit's data from being trawled by web scraping bots - exactly the same thing Elon Musk did when he took over Twitter so he could wall off that data for his own AI development.
So it comes as absolutely zero surprise to me that with Reddit's IPO filing, AI and LLM (Large Language Models) are mentioned SEVERAL times. This is all to tempt a public buyer.
What they do acknowledge though, which is why this video is titled 'Reddit's Trojan Horse' is the fact that while initially this might work and be worth a lot - as the use of AI grows, so will the likelihood that AI generated content being passed off as 'human generated' on the platform will grow - essentially nulling the value of having a user-generated dataset, if not actively MAKING IT WORSE.
As stated in the video - it's widely known that feeding AI content into an AI causes 'model collapse', or complete degeneration into gibberish and 'hallucinations'. This goes for both LLM's and Image Generation AI.
Now given current estimates that 90% of the internet's content will be AI generated by 2026 that means most of the internet is going to turn into a potential minefield for web-scraping content to shove into a training dataset, because now you have to really start paying attention what your bot is sucking up - because lets face it, no one is really going to look at what is in that dataset because it's simply too huge (unless you're one of those poor people in Kenya being paid jack shit to basically weed out the most disgusting and likely traumatizing content from a massive dataset).
What I know about current web-scraping, is OpenAI at least has built it's bot to recognize AI generated image content and exclude it from the scrape. An early version of image protection on the side of Artists was something like this - it basically injected a little bit of data to make the bot think it was AI generated and leave it alone. Now of course we have Nightshade and Glaze, which actively work against training the model and 'poison' the dataset, making Model Collapse worse.
So right now, the best way to protect your images (and I mean all images you post online publicly, not just art) from being scraped is to Glaze/Nightshade them, because either these bots will likely be programmed to avoid them - but if not, good news! You poisoned the dataset.
What I was kind of stumped on is Language Models. While feeding AI LLM's their own data also causes Model Collapse, it's harder to understand why. With an image it makes sense - it's all 1's and 0's to a machine, and there is some underlying pattern within that data which gets further reinforced and contributes to the Model Collapse. But with text?
You can't really Nightshade/Glaze text.
Or can you?
Much like with images, there is clearly something about the way a LLM chooses words and letters that has a similar pattern that when reinforced contributes to this Model Collapse. It may read perfectly fine to us, but in a way that text is poisoned for the AI. There's talk of trying to figure out a way to 'watermark' generated text, but probably won't figure that one out any time soon given they're not really sure how it's happening in the first place. But AI has turned into a global arms race of development, they need data and they need it yesterday.
For those who want to disrupt LLM's, I have a proposal - get your AI to reword your shit. Just a bit. Just enough, that it's got this pattern injected.
These companies have basically opened Pandora's Box to the internet before even knowing this would be a problem - they were too focused on getting money (surprise! It's capitalism again). And well, Karma's about to be a massive bitch to them for rushing it out the door and stealing a metric fucktonne of data without permission.
If they want good data? They will have to come to the people who hold the good data, in it's untarnished, pure form.
I don't know how accurate this language poisoning method could be, I'm just spitballing hypotheticals here based on the stuff I know and current commentary in AI tech spaces. Either way, the tables are gonna turn soon.
So hang in there. Don't let corpos convince you that you don't have control here - you soon will have a lot of control. Trap the absolute fuck out of everything you post online, let it become a literal minefield for them.
Let them get desperate. And if they want good data? Well they're just going to have to pay for it like they should have done in the first place.
Fuck corpos. Poison the machine. Give them nothing for free.

I'm sad.
Like, I already expected my data and art to be scrapped so this new decision doesn't really make that big of a difference dispite feeling actively backstabbed, and a reminder to try out glaze and nightshade again. (It didn't work for me last I tried)
However seeing people move, a very understandable decision, and tumblr dying a little more because of that makes me sad.
Its the only platform that works for me. I don't like twitter, or instagram, or bluesky, facebook, reddit, tiktok etc. and whatever else I tried. I don't like the way their posts, timelines, tags and shit work. The focus of their content, their social climate etc. Sure I have problems with tumblr, but the way their fundamental systems are built are unique to it and the only ones I feel comfortable using. So no, I don't think just moving to a different platform and following my favourite artists there is going to be an option for me.
And well, that just makes me sad.

Sending this to Artists I follow:
Guess what! Tumblr made a deal with midjourney to sell what they can for AI development, and you have to manually opt-out.
Find it in the blog-settings, under Visibility. Its "Prevent third-party sharing for [Blog-Name]", and it has to be turned on for every blog and sideblog individually.
Or you can go on the offensive and Glaze and Nightshade your Art.
Or you can just do whatever. Im just trying to help.
Thanks for letting me know!! Admittedly this was my first ask and I got a little excited to see it but it turned out to be bad news. But nonetheless! I'm super appreciative of your help and I'm answering it so that this can be more public information!
I'm kind of a bit too lazy to glaze my art even though I really should. But I opted out anyways because I don't like Generative AI and the scummy practices people put around trying to force as many people as possible into giving their art out for it one bit :/
I feel really bad for artists that have stopped using Tumblr with their accounts still active. They're not going to be able to turn this off because they won't be active on Tumblr to see it. What a horrid business practice. These should all be opt-in, not opt-out. The automatic assumption that we WANT to be a part of this and the silent attempts at forcing us to be a part of this makes me sick to my core. What rubbish. :L

While I don't like AI and I actively avoid it bc its cheap, ugly, trained on people's hard work to provide a 2 second dopamine boost for unskilled individuals, I've lowkey stopped giving a fuck about the AI scares. Yes it will lose some jobs, yes it will cause copyright issues from stolen material, yes this that and those reason(s) and we should try to kill it asap bc it would be better for education, intelligence, skill building, etc.
However I've literally just stopped giving a fuck about if some website wants to data scrape my art or posts then go on fucking do it. Get your fix of mental illness & typo posting and furry art. You'll never be as special as artworks made from the heart and out of real feelings and thoughts instead of producing meaningless sludge that floods the web and takes up more data space than ever necessary. You're lame, ugly, boring, soulless and just useless. You'll never be real. <3
Nightshade/glaze overheats your devices and kills all the quality, has already been proven useless bc the machines can work around it (source: 2 coursemates), google has already sold all of our souls to the big corps of the world, even if you opt out of ai it may or may not still scrape it, because google owns it. The 40+y.o Facebook population has been sharing badly photoshopped images since 2005, so a few fake ai videos will probably not persuade them any more than a conservative newsletters clickbait title.
So make the best of it, post your art as usual, opt out of ai training, avoid ai art if you want and true love will find you in the end <3

So the AI shit people were warning about actually came true, huh. Absolute garbage. I encourage you all to opt out of that stuff - but let's be real, those AI Bros won't care either way, they'll just take our content anyways.
Welp. I don't think I'm going anywhere, my preferred style of posting doesn't particularly work well with the way Twitter/BlueSky works and I don't really feel like moving to something like cohost either. Since I don't post art that frequently I will probably just slap glaze/nightshade on it and call it a day.
My text posts will continue in full force though (which means maybe like once per month lol), you won't have to worry about that. I guess I'll just tell myself that my second language sentence structure is going to actively make the AI worse.
