This is old news but what do you think about the dress Lauren Sanchez wore to the State Dinner at the White House a few weeks ago? Fashion Nova vibes for sure.
I've read that some people are not happy that a woman 'like her' has broken into high society. They think she is cheapening the community. It used to be that women would leave their trashy aesthetic behind once they bagged the whale (Melania Trump before and after Donald), but she's not doing that and people are unhappy. I don't like to judge women for frivolous stuff like that but I kind of agree. The concrete breast implants and the outfits that always show her perpetually hard nipples are kind of trashy in my opinion. But hey, she is engaged to the wealthiest man in the world so opinions can't stop her lol.

"Fashion Nova vibes for sure"
Exactly😅
"It used to be that women would leave their trashy aesthetic behind once they bagged the whale (Melania Trump before and after Donald), but she's not doing that and people are unhappy."
I think she is ruining some great opportunities for herself to be taken more seriously and prosper by creating her own identity apart from being Jeff's SO. I believe that her constant need to dress inappropriately only makes people confirm that she's just a trophy or eye candy without substance even though she is quite accomplished herself. I'm not very surprised because she has chosen to be influenced by people with a cheap image like the Kardashians. Maybe one day she will be surrounded by the right crowd and change her ways, I can guarantee it's only yes men all around her that wouldn't dare to be honest with her. I'm also not surprised that Jeff is getting a kick out of all of this, there's so much contrast between Mackenzie Scott and Lauren Sanchez.😭

Matt Damon in The Martian (Ridley Scott, 2015)
Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain,  Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Won, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover. Screenplay: Drew Goddard, based on a novel by Andy Wier. Cinematography: Dariusz Wolski. Production design: Arthur Max. Film editing: Pietro Scalia. Music: Harry Gregson-Williams.
Andy Weir's best-selling science fiction novel was one of the few that manage to emphasize science almost as much as fiction. The film version, being aimed at a somewhat less cerebral audience, doesn't quite keep that balance, but Drew Goddard's screenplay is an admirable effort to keep up with protagonist Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) determination to "science the shit out of" the problem of surviving after he has been marooned on Mars. And in an age when science has fallen afoul of politics, The Martian nobly attempts to bring some luster to this essential human endeavor. There is also a political undercurrent in the film, namely the hurdles that NASA administrator Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) has to leap in order to achieve the rescue of his stranded astronaut. It's gratifying, too, to see so many actors of color -- Michael Peña, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Donald Glover, among others -- given key roles in the effort to rescue Watney, all of them allotted parts emphasizing their skill and intelligence. On the other hand, there were protests that the ethnicity of some of the characters in the film had been changed. In the novel, for example, the mission director is called Venkat Kapoor, and he is a Hindu. His first name is changed in the film to Vincent, and he's played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, the British actor whose parents were born in Nigeria -- the change is signaled by an explanation that his father was Hindu and his mother was a Baptist. One reason for such protests is that director Scott's previous film was Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), in which all of the Egyptian and Middle Eastern characters were played by white actors like Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, a continuation of an old Hollywood tradition that increasingly seems wrong-headed. Fortunately, in The Martian Scott kept the novel's prominent female roles, including mission commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) and astronaut Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara).

The Martian (2015) - Ridley Scott
{85} Movies Seen in 2020 - 4 1/2 Stars
How do I follow up watching something like Apollo 11. By rewatching the lovely "The Martian", of course. Also, my first time watching it since I have read the book (or should I say, listened to the amazing audiobook version).
Tumblr media
I still love this movie a lot, I think Ridley Scott does a great job making Mars look real, and he has always been excellent with doing sci-fi space travel technology. From Alien to Prometheus, everything looks as it should, they transcend time, while still looking realistic.
Tumblr media
Matt Damon does an excellent job here, he is funny, but still giving us layers, he is still a man alone in a planet, using inappropriate jokes to get through the day, to survive. And he is alone too, I didn't realize before how most of the time he is practically doing a monologue by himself. He makes us feel like we are right there with him.

SIR JOHN STEELL RSA (1804-1891)
PROVIDENCE WITH WIDOW AND CHILDREN, CIRCA 1832
carved sandstone figure group.
Note: John Steell (1804-1891) was born in Aberdeen in 1804, but moved to Edinburgh with his family in 1807. He entered into an apprenticeship with his father, who was a carver and gilder, and trained at the Trustees' School of Design. Just five years after going into partnership with his father in 1824 he resolved to become a sculptor and travelled to Rome. On his return in 1830, he was made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. During the course of his career he became one of the most important and esteemed sculptors of nineteenth century Scotland, being made sculptor to the Queen in Scotland in 1838. He is known for several famous statues including the statue of Queen Victoria atop the RSA building on Princes Street, Edinburgh, the statue of Sir Walter Scott in the Scott Monument, also on Princes Street, and Edinburgh's Prince Albert Memorial monument in Charlotte Square, for which he received his knighthood in 1876.
In 1832 he was commissioned to design his first architectural piece, the current lot, which would adorn the entrance to the St Andrew Square, head office of the Scottish Widows' Fund and Life Assurance Society in Edinburgh. It was based on the decorative emblem that was used on the society's policy documents. The sculpture depicts Providence, who is the divine representation of the ability to make provision, with a cornucopia with fruit and vegetables spilling from it. To her left is a child holding a bulging sheaf of wheat. On the left of the sculpture sits a mourning widow, shawled and seated in a Madonna-like fashion, surrounded by her children who look up at her. On the right of the sculpture is a headstone, signifying the lost husband, with the date AD MDCCCXV (1815) inscribed on it, which was the year of the society's establishment.
In 1859 the society's offices were moved a few doors down and the sculpture was relocated to their Glasgow branch on Buchanan Street. From there it was removed some time before the building's demolition in the 1970s, at which point it was stored in the basement of the old Scottish Widows' building at 9 St Andrew Square. The sculpture was subsequently gifted to Donald Mackenzie who placed it in his garden.

Film: The Martian review
Tumblr media
(Source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3659388/mediaviewer/rm1391324160/)
Release date: 30th September 2015 Duration: 2hrs 41 mins Genre: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi Directed by: Ridley Scott Rated: 12 Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michela Pena, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, Benedict Wong, Mackenzie Davis
Directed by Ridley Scott, (famously known as the director of other well-known sci-fi films such as Alien, Prometheus and Blade Runner) The Martian is a film based on the novel of the same name written by Andy Weir. In a Film4 interview special, Scott explained that The Martian is a very well adapted screenplay of the book and it is very faithful to the book. He also goes on to say that what intrigued him about The Martian was the puzzle of science and how it tied in closely to a very strong character who would not allow fear and terror make him succumb to the idea of dying.
Set in 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars are exploring on Sol 18 (Martian solar day) of their 31-sol expedition. Not long after, they are hit with a dust storm and decide to abandon their mission. They evacuate but crew member Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is hit by debris and gets lost in the storm. Presumed dead, the crew leave using their orbiting vessel, the Hermes. Watney survives the storm and wakes up to find that he is injured. He returns to the crew’s surface habitat “the Hab” where he performs surgery on himself. Unable to communicate with Earth, Watney believes his only chance of rescue is by the next Mars mission in four years where the Area IV will land 2,000 miles away. Worried about food shortages, he makes a garden inside the Hab using Martian soil fertilized with the crew’s bio-waste and manufactures water from leftover rocket fuel. On Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park (Mackenzie Davis) realises Watney is alive while reviewing aerial Hab images. NASA director Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) publicly releases the news but doesn’t tell the Ares 111 crew so they can continue with their mission. Watney finds the nearby Pathfinder and uses the camera and motor to establish two-way communication with Earth, starting with hand-written signs. NASA transmits a software patch to link the rover with Pathfinder which allows them to communicate via text. Watney doesn’t blame the crew for leaving him behind and eventually, they find out that he is still alive. Mars mission director Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) director Bruce Ng (Benedict Wong) prepare an Iris space probe to deliver enough food to survive until Ares IV’s arrival. The mission fails as the rocket explodes after lift-off and Watney’s hope for getting back to Earth slowly diminishes. The China National Space Administration has been developing a classified booster rocket called the Taiyang Shen and offer to repeat the Iris mission. Watney’s situation continues to deteriorate until JPL astrodynamicist Rich Purnell (Donald Glover) comes up with an alternative plan; he suggests that the Taiyan Shen meets and resupplies the Hermes which will then use Earth’s gravity to slingshot back to Mars two years earlier than Ares IV. Watney begins the journey to Schiaparelli where the MAV for Ares IV has been pre-positioned. After take-off, the MAV fails to reach the required speed so the crew resort to making a bomb to better align the ship. In a Manned Manoeuvring Unit, Lewis (Jessica Chastain) is unable to reach Watney as the tether is too short. Watney pierces his pressure suit and uses the air as thrusts to head towards Lewis and reunite with the rest of the crew. At the end of the film, we are shown that Watney has become survival instructor for astronaut candidates after coming back to Earth.
Despite the lengthy duration, this film was appropriately paced and worth watching. The storyline was straightforward: an astronaut is stranded on Mars and the film follows his progress and journey to get back to Earth. However, when it came to the storytelling there was a mixture of things: the use of diary entries, updates on the movement of the protagonist and what was happening back on Earth. It is these different elements that kept viewers eager and hopeful for Watney to return to Earth. The witty and comedic aspects of Watney’s character also lightened the seriousness of it all. Although the genre of The Martian is considered to be sci-fi overall, it is a film suited for all audiences and not just sci-fi lovers.
The Martian is available to buy on DVD from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Martian-DVD-Matt-Damon/dp/B015Q04ET6/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=the+martian&qid=1615835830&s=dvd&sr=1-3

2020 / 53
Aperçu of the week:
You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.
(William W. Purkey)
Wraping up 2020:
The year that is coming to an end has been so defined by Corona, Donald Trump, climate change and Brexit that this media oligopoly has also dominated my weekly self-reflection. Of course, as a self-confessed news junkie, my thoughts often revolve around sociopolitical aspects.
Numerous other topics fell by the wayside, which would have been worth mentioning, but could not assert themselves in my frontal lobe. Therefore, here and now a top ten compilation of my notes over the year (I jot down thoughts during the week, which I then process on the weekend to my blog), which I would like to get rid of on the last meters.
Other bad news of the year:
CIA and Mossad kill people on foreign soil. Even if you can't like terrorists and nuclear weapons scientists in principle, this clearly doesn't meet the criteria of the rule of law that they like to claim from third parties.
Black U.S. parents still have to teach their children special preemptive defensive behavior toward white police. Still way to go for "Black lifes matter"....
Corona complicates the fight against Ebola, HIV, etc. - especially in the third world. Vaccination initiatives are also set way back.
Spree killings and terrorist attacks everywhere - in France, Vienna, Trier, etc. - not only out of religious fanaticism, but also out of the blue. And there are still fellow citizens living in European societies who believe that defenders of freedom of expression, which also applies to images of the Prophet Mohammed, should be beheaded.
The extinction of species continues. Not only in the tropical forests of Asia and South America, where nature is being pushed back more and more by ruthless man. But e.g. also on the Russian peninsula Kamchatka, where unbelievably large populations were obviously poisoned insidiously - thus died due to environmental pollution. For comparison: that would be as if all wild animals of Germany were murdered within two years.
Political organizations (OpenPetition, Campact, etc.) in Germany are in danger of losing their non-profit status regarding taxes. This probably means the financial end for most of them, because they are usually overlooked when it comes to donations. Yet political education fulfills an essential social task, especially in the age of fake news.
Racism does not only exist in former slaveholding countries like the USA. In Ghana, for example, there is a frightening trend toward skin bleaching with extremely harmful agents, because lighter-skinned people have better chances in society - from dating to the job market.
QAnon - as probably the most frightening example of strange conspiracy theories.
Even if the whole world would take all possible measures to stop climate change from now on, the summer ice in the Arctic is already lost. And nobody knows what that means for the world's climate. It is dramatic how ignorant we all apparently still are.
According to the WHO, there was 60% more domestic violence in Europe in April 2020 than in April 2019 - an unexpected negative consequence of the quarantine and home office era.
Other good news of the year:
MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says she has donated $4.2 billion to charities in the past four months. Thanks to Warren Buffett and Bill Gates for "The Giving Pledge" initiative!
My favorite weekly newspaper "Die ZEIT" has again been awarded the honorary title of "European Newspaper of the Year." Good choice!
The EU strengthens the Convention on Protection for Endangered Species and enables global prosecution of human rights offenders.
Vatican puts itself at the service of the global education pact. Which primarily benefits girls in the Third World.
More and more Republicans in the Senate battleground state of Georgia are distancing themselves from Trump. So there's hope for a tolerable GOP future. And for political balance in the Senate.
Joe Biden can make a difference even against a Republican Senate majority: Strengthen Medicare, suspend student loan repayment, launch green infrastructure project, etc. - all important issues for the younger generations. For that, however, he would have to play "hardball." In doing so, he would save American democracy by renouncing his own ideals of political style.
The job market in many nations remains relatively stable despite Corona. This also reduces the likelihood of a new wave of poverty with loss of residency, etc.
A so-called "supply chain law" in Germany is intended to oblige or hold companies liable for tracing intermediate goods or finished products procured abroad at all stages of their supply chain for any production processes that are harmful to the environment or violate working conditions. "Fair trade" is in vogue.
Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser emphasizes the importance of human rights and environmental standards in trade issues with China and intends to increasingly align the global company's future actions with compliance.
The 40% drop in burglaries in Germany shows an unexpected positive consequence of the quarantine and home office era.
Wish you a happy new year and all the best for a better 2021!
