this post about lesbian divas rlly delighted me. it's fun to see this niche topic talked about and expanded on with lots of examples. soooo i compiled all the responses as of 21/09/23 10:30pm EST and put them in a spreadsheet. then ranked them by how much of a diva i consider them lol

first off, the general list. i found 152 unique responses in the replies, tags, and comments. some were only first names so i didnt bother researching into who the poster was talking about. images for ease of viewing:

second... what is a diva?? clarifying where im coming from is important to understand my upcoming opinions. i should make clear that im talking about DIVAS as in DIVA WORSHIP as in LIZA MINNELLI-BARBRA STREISAND-BETTE DAVIS-LADY GAGA etcetera. dykes can see these female celebs as divas as well, but what the original post touches on is the male diva.

this rthko ask explains the diva well. you should also take a look at scholarly articles and books -- divas have been a part of recorded gay culture and esp gay male culture and drag queen culture forever -- the term isnt concrete. rthko says that "there's no real formula" but lists these typical features of a diva:

larger than life -- glam, humor, charisma? would a drag queen impersonate them?

theatrical / proximity to theatre

sexy / horny -- rthko notes here that these arent requirements, citing liza's lack of sexual overtness

strength

niche -- can be popular but not a general crowd-pleaser

gay rights supporter -- before it was cool

now rthko is talking about female divas, even noting the blind spot for bi/lesbian fans and artists. i say you can apply the same features to male celebrities to identify the male divas dykes idolize. i should note that some of the ppl on the list are women or genderqueer. so the list is not entirely male.

another note: im putting so much emphasis on DIVAHOOD because it's SUCH a specific term. not all icons, "weird little guys", "blorbos" are divas. one thing rthko doesn't touch on is how a diva often has a strong sense of self that the devotee can identify and want to emulate -- at the xtreme, leads to drag art. if they dont inspire and amaze, then are they a diva?

lets get into part 3: which of these 152 people / concepts / groups are honest to god divas? you can argue they're all Icons to some extent (the bare minimum being having a lesbian fanbase) but do they have what rthko and i (and gay culture researchers) consider to be the features of a diva?

first thing i did identify those i both recognized and "saw divahood within". ended up with 44:

this ranking is not definite -- though i tried to be fair, considering the limits to what i know, it is subjective

i dont know the histories of some of these people, so i may be missing some things. an inverse example: i know far too much about gerard way, so i had a good idea of how he fit into each feature

some of these i couldnt decide whether i should check or not. al pacino i was esp worried about... couldnt justify checking those boxes the way i can for other people

either way, my findings yielded interesting results! 3 of the most commonly talked about singer-songwriters (bruce, bob, johnny) ranked low. this may indicate that there's other features to the male diva that arent specified or dont apply to females divas / gay male devotees. perhaps defined gender expression, or “voice for lesbians”, or something else.

all of the people with a score of 4 or more can be emulated. "sex" (meaning overt sexuality) is the least common feature, after "theatrical".

though anyone can be a diva to anyone, there's a certain "canon" of who is a diva in gay circles. liza barbra bette gaga. this messy qualitative approach is an attempt to figure that out for dyke divas. i would love to talk about it more.

1. one of my OGs is will parry from his dark materials. he’s of that type of male character that is relentlessly kind shonen protagonist who keeps being forced into violence but doesnt want to. also the original book boyfriend next to percy jackson. 12 year old me was obsessed. i loved prince caspian and half the narnia boys for the same reason, and when i watched fullmetal alchemist this was why alphonse elric was my favorite elric brother. (this is also why i love yuji, tanjiro, and deku very dearly)

2. probably one of my first blorbos of all time was elphaba from wicked, hence my old URL. reading that book too early changed my brain chemistry. area leftist of a marginalized identity maligned by society and also bisexual as hell. she will always be my first and forever girly. you can imagine what happened to me when i met wei wuxian, who is essentially the same character. i went nuts

3. the funny little bisexual man who covers his pain with humor and cares so deeply usually goes on the list. one of my first was and always will be Sokka, but percy jackson fills this role as well as my beloveds, Satoru Gojo, and Vash the Stampede

4. funny little bisexual man who covers his pain with humor and is doomed by the narrative could cover many already mentioned but Nicholas D. Wolfwood remains the pinnacle. he’s very important to me. ive made a lot of posts about him but him representing this existential dread that you’ll die before you find happiness haunts me

5. the secondary villain who becomes a begrudging part of the team for comedy also always is a favorite but Greed from FMA has always stuck with me. an embodiment of one of humanity’s sins finding peace because the thing he most coveted became the love of others and not material wants got my ass

8. shocking absolutely no one, while sailor moon is one of my favorite pieces of media of all time and it is largely about women, my blorbo is tuxedo mask, mamoru chiba, the like ONE guy. he’s pathetic, he’s bisexual, and he’s also one of my first anime crushes of all time. more importantly he has been wronged by many adaptations and i must fight for his honor.

i just wanted to maybe explain a bit of the perspective of people who don't reblog stuff on here, not trying to justify anything because i'm aware that writers deserve to be recognized for their work and people should share it when they're able, but there are a lot of reasons why people don't reblog anything!

in my case i used to not reblog a lot if not at all because i read like 50 things a day and i felt like it would be annoying for the people that follows me to have their timeline full of my reblogs, especially because most of them were from different fandoms and had completely opposite interests, also it made me feel so anxious because there's stuff i don't want people to know about me that's maybe visible on the things i read (or at least it felt like that in my anxious brain) and i'm sure other people have other reasons and again, i know it's not fair and it doesn't justify anything, but everyone is different! as for me, now i reblog everything i read/enjoy, but it was really hard to let my anxiety about it go!

anyway, maybe this won't help at all and i'm sorry if it's inconvenient or upsetting!

i do understand that perspective, and i absolutely can see those fears but i think it’s more than just being ‘recognised’, and i’ll explain why!

firstly, yeah being conscious of your followers is totally fair, however the beauty of tumblr is that you can make sideblogs, or tell your followers to blacklist/filter a specific tag so that their timelines arent clogged! even just queuing the posts gives a chance for them to scroll by if they want. ofc certain tws make sense to not share with followers who know you tho.

sometimes it isnt even about reblogs specifically; if someone left a comment or ask instead of a reblog that’s more than enough! the problem with just liking posts is that it creates a really consumerist experience on tumblr, which is first and foremost a blogging platform: so when i see empty blogs and their like pages are just full of fics i bluescreen a bit. these days, the like to reblog ratio of literally every artist (writer, fanart) is really really sad to see, their audiences just consume it without even sending a kind thought to the creator!!! doesnt that make your heart ache??

imagine a small town. everybody knows everybody, small businesses everywhere trading their own products to share the love and hyping up each other’s babies (their passions). that’s how i imagine blogs, and so when i see spam likes without reblogs, or a “part 2 when??!” when said person hasnt even commented before or reblogged, it transforms my blog from a community space where we share thoughts about blorbos into a product that only serves to entertain.

i really dont care about followers or note counts; i do care about having conversations with anyone who decides to hang around, if that’s a reblog chain or an ask or a comment thread then that’s how it is! we can talk headcanons or daydreams (within reason) or just generally chat!

i just cannot describe how crushing it feels when i open my notifs and only see likes. it makes me close the app straight away because there’s no one to interact with. also, it gives the message that someone read my fic, and liked it, but not enough to share it with their friends.

i hope that clears it up a bit more! it’s not a vanity or note count thing, if you comment or send an ask about a fic that’s exactly the same thing! thank you for reading and let me tell you i say this with nothing but love.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

i get into it like this

i.e., i have to find something that i can relate to with the character to be able to write them

like, it doesnt have to be the entire character’s personality, thats impossible. it can just be one (1) thing that i personally resonate with. and like....thats the window on how i get in and begin to understand everything else. like, lemme take two current blorbos i love, one thats easiest for me to write and one thats the hardest: luke and vyn

luke has so many windows. all of them are open, the front door is unlocked, hell, theres a hole in the roof. getting into his head-house is supremely easy for me since i relate to a lot of his personality/thought processes.

for vyn, it felt like breaking in like in a heist movie JHVKJHVSKFJHAS. i could not get in there for a While until i saw a singular air vent labeled “DESIRE TO HAVE AND KEEP KNOWLEDGE, AS KNOWLEDGE BECOMES A FULCRUM WHERE HE CAN LEVERAGE HIMSELF INTO A SAFER VANTAGE POINT” and i was like bINGOOOOOOOO!! related very much to that. and with that as the square 1, i was able to see everything else and understand the rest

as to How i find the opening, thats where all my ridiculous analyses come in. i need to pour over the stories and whats there already and find entrance points. like, character rambles is basically me trying to make the heist map.

from Designations Congruent with Things by cleanwhiteroom. this is a pacific rim fanfic that ran from 2013-2014 (no longer on ao3 but archived in many places by ppl who loved it) and it became a cult classic within the fandom for good reason. it is one of the most phenomenal things ive ever read in my life, across the span of All kinds of written work. this fanfic REWIRED MY BRAIN AT 13 YEARS OLD. 

and i still reread it every other year and im frigging blown away every time. these lines in particular just.....they Stayed In My Head. in the aftermath of complicated trauma, thats the situation. it’s written so simply and strikes so hard, it’s so forlorn yet hopeful as well. there are not many. but there are some... THAT MADE ME INSANE AND I HAVE NEVER RECOVERED.

yes! i completely understand where you're coming from and this makes so much sense. i used to be heavier in my teens (im hesitant to say i was plus-sized because i dont really know what qualifies as that and not?) and i ended up getting very sick and loosing a lot of weight in the process so i've seen this situation from both sides and it's insane how hard it was even a few years ago. i would always find myself thinking 'oh thats cute... on you'. i'm sure there's been some improvements but not any huge ones. especially when we talk about celebrities we admire the style of and they shop at higher end places, those stores are just abysmal with larger sizes. they're so far behind with plus sizes. also with sustainable clothes, they arent that size inclusive either.

disclaimer i am not good enough to beat extra stages.

touhou 6 eosd-- a classic. cannot objectively rank the characters because they are bigger than the game theyre from. (though i do think rumia and remilia deserve more attention than they get. remi seems to play second fiddle to her sister and maid fandom-wise) gameplay is... okay! rng heavy which is cringe but id say difficulty is solidly in the middle. i play with visible-hitbox patch. stage 4 can be rough and Fucking Sakuya but its fun! music i also cannot objectively rank, but its good!

touhou 10 mof-- i have barely played this game i mostly just abuse the marisaB glitch. music is amazing, autumnal atmosphere is great. i dont care much for the midgame bosses but the early game gods and the moriya shrine crew are really good. bullet patterns suck though. you get bullet walls too often in stage 4+. also my widescreen monitor doesnt treat it very well. the bomb system sucks a little esp with the fact theres no unique bombs per shot type or even character. laaame. game id rather look at and listen to than play. i really like zuns art style here its very expressive

touhou 13 td-- ehhh? something abt the vibes of this game are kinda dull, even though the Components are pretty good. maybe its the dark backdrops and kind of low-stakes plot. i like the cast and the art, music is good (old yuanshen and desire drive epic moments). hate the spirits/trance system it gets me killed too often and adds Death Lag and generally makes resources a hassle. very punishing if you die :( with the losing 1 whole power and your trance gauge (and again, the death lag when you trance upon death, it makes it less fun bc it takes you out of the flow...) honorable mention for having probably my favorite spellcard (oomonoimi’s dinner on normal difficulty). dishonorable mention for yoshikas spellcards

touhou 14 ddc-- i want to like this game but. i dont really. i like the plot and cast (minus the tsukumos im sorry i want to like them but theyre so dull...) the art looks... wonky here. the difficulty curve feels wonky, stage 3 is kind of spammy and i just dont feel like i ever Earn the deaths i take. the resource system is fine enough. seija my blorbo. the music is kind of repetitive and lacks some oomph. (primordial beat earns some points for the percussion though.)

touhou 15 lolk-- games good at what it sets out to do, which is “be absolute bullshit”. like its fun to push through these rather unfair patterns and challenge over and over, but legacy mode probably suffers immensely from this. also i think pointdevice should be allowed in extra. characters are all really good, music is great, arts good. vibes are good. not the same as other TH games, and yes it is quite bullshit, but i enjoy it

touhou 16 hsifs-- eh. kind of neutral on this one as a whole. very bright and fun game, but sometimes its hard to see the bullets on the bright bgs. cast is forgettable minus okina and the backup dancers. ppl say the dancers are forgettable too but i disagree they have fun theming both musically and as characters and i like their dynamic! they have a bit of personality and its understandable that they arent SUPER overt with that characterization because. like. theyre not meant to be all that independent. okina is epic. art’s crisp. fuck stage 4 and 5 and behind festival. musics good.

2. Why do you write fanfiction?

I write because i dont know how else to scratch the itch of having a character or some media im really into. It's when the source material isnt enough. Its when im clawing at the wallpaper for more but theres no more to be had. I dont think my writing says anything new, but i get to the point where i want to try my hand at it, see if i can do it to some degree of success. And see if maybe the itch for more can finally be scratched. (Spoiler alert, it cant)

7. What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Time taken to actually write. My free time is limited and my energy even more so. And writing is excruciatingly slow for me. I mull things over a lot. Work and rework and rework. Once i get going i can get in the zone, but the zone is still going to need minimum three hours in one uninterrupted sitting. And most days that isnt something that i have the fortune to do. Besides that, there are lots of other things i want to do (like music and skating and crafting and sewing and drawing and dancing and watching movies and working on my sideblogs) so often fanfic doesnt come first.

Heheh I finally understand all those posts about being the only author for a characteror pairing. At least for my blorbo he's shown up in like three other fics, so im not truly alone, but nobody else is shipping this dude with anyone. Thats a fact. They're about as into it as humans are really: generally not seen as okay/a societal taboo but some people are just really into it/Blaise enough about it regardless.

as for the point of the dlc, my best guess would be its there for much the same reason cindered shadows is in three houses: someone in management demanded the game have a dlc campaign/they started working on dlc as part of the usual development cycles these days but didn't want to make something directly tied to the main campaign for whatever reason. So, welcome to alt fanfic filler arc land where the stakes simultaneously dont matter/matter way too fucking much and can be conveniently ignored in the main campaign/story with ease. With that said from a story angle I do like fell xenologue more then cindered shadows anyways, but then I have a soft spot for mirror dimensions in fiction. the fell xenologue isn't as good as it could be even by those standards though.

I needed to parse the whole thing a couple a times to take the wall of text all in, but dont worry about it. what your saying is generally sound and its always interesting to hear how different fandoms approach the same thing in different or similar ways.

I knew people liked tsubaki and selena but I didn't know that one was the ship considered most cannon of fe14 selenas ships. Which as ya point out does make how she gives birth to her mothers identitcal [visually anyways] clone kinda funny in that context.

Honestly I just think its an issue of how fandom has so much purity wank going on in it these days, not even anything specific to fe. Its not enough that the blorbo is your favorite, your blorbo has to be a MORALLY GOOD PERSON too regardless of if the original text outright states that they arent a good person or not. Hence the oddly puritanical standards everyone holds characters too these days, like we had suddenly warped right back into the 1950's in terms of how mercilessly hard your judging your neighbour for having an unkempt lawn for.

I haven't engaged with the dlc characters as much compared to the main cast, so this isn't gonna be a 100% definitive answer sorry.

madelines a hard classic general, gregorys your inverse sage res tank unit with meh spd, zelestia is high on spd but average across the board otherwise, and nels the myrmidon to rafals mercenary. What ya see with their base stats is what your gonna get for them as units really. if your asking whos gonna be your most helpful, id say zelestia so long as you do the dlc early enough as their levels dont scale from what i understand.

zelestias got some chonky speed, and shes otherwise a mage knight on a flying dragon in her unique class with soulblade her class unique skill presenting some interesting avenues of exploitation in taking the average of an enemies def/res in damage calculations for swords. Give her some investment and I imagine

given the game was supposed to be released a lot sonner then it was, its not entirely surprising that the dlc came out so quick. I wouldn't quite say its 'era' is over yet mind, that simply depends on what comes out next and when.

With all that said, considering how fast it all came out I wouldn't actually be surprised if they announced a second pack of dlc if the first pack and engage as a whole does well enough. its not a sure thing but not impossible either.

I kinda wanna get a hint as to whats gonna come next though. Which is one of my bigger frustrations with is and fe really, i wish they communicated what they're plannin with the fans more.

I dont even think its ideas they're lacking in, its just a seeming reluctance on the koei assisted titles to release the additional maps the 3ds dlc ones did. all of the games since awakening have had an additional dlc campaign of sorts for instance, but in both three houses and engage they dont bother to include any of the gold or exp or weapon dlc grinding maps the 3ds games had, or try their hands at anything equivalent to the robust selections of weird dlc maps the 3ds games often hand like the festival things. engage i feel does better in this regard through the additional dlc emblem trials and campaign over three houses sitting with a dlc campaign alone but still.

my friends been trying to get me to watch ds9 for ages, and after a several month hiatus ive finally started watching again, and it sort of helped me clarify a bit of why ive found it so hard to get 'in'. its a combo of so many things.

i preceeded watching ds9 by watching 95% of tng (skipping a few episodes, ie The Naked Now). and that means that part of me, however unfairly, is comparing tng at its peak (like seasons 3-5 or so) to ds9 s1. and that is unfair! bc s1 of tng also isnt that good! but i watched that with no expectations of quality, and now that i know what star trek CAN be, s1 of ds9 is a bit weak. not bad! just finding its footing.

relatedly, ds9s pilot sucks shit. i dont like it. its a two episode character study and somehow i come out of it feeling like i understand sisko less than i did after the first episode. also just personally i dont find religion an interesting plot, especially on a character who... isnt... part of that religion. (compare sisko in the pilot to kira in Battle Lines. THATS the good shit. battle lines is a really good episode imho)

everyone kept telling me ds9 was really good so a weak s1 is. unfortunate

i just have not found an 'in' to liking Dax. she just doesnt interest me. the most interesting shes been so far is the few times when she and sisko are just like. bantering? bc its when you get a sense that she has literally anything going on that isnt just her job. to that, she has the unfortunate job of being the Main Science Gal (vs Obrien being the Engineering guy, and Bashir being the Medical Guy). and that means shes being compared to Data. And im sorry but Data's my fucking blorbo, my hometown boy, my perfectly aged wine, and so on. she never had a chance.

related to the way people have tried to sell me on ds9, whenever ive mentioned my lack of investment in Dax, ive been assured that she gets better. Particularly once Worf shows up and they start a relationship. and while im certain that will be good - i like worf! hes not my blorbo but, yknow, he's my guy - it sucks to me that dax only gets more interesting once a man shows up and she enters a romantic arc. that sours me a little pre-emptively

and theres probably arent really fair criticisms? im sure if i wanted i could try to properly unpack why the ds9 pilot failed for me and started me on a bad foot for the whole series beyond just 'religion plot boring', maybe more into the vein of 'its weird that sisko is the chosen one when he has no connection to this religion, this region, or this culture', or present a nuanced critique of why a heavily character focused episode is a choice that doesnt work for me when its the start of a series with an ensemble cast, but 🤷. and my dislike of dax definitely isnt fair.

but i feel like i gotta unpack it in some capacity as a way to help me get over the growing pains and find where ds9 hits its stride. because there has been some good stuff! odo and quark are exceptional together, with an excellent dynamic that already is more than just one note, with a usual rhythm and the ways it interacts with the episode plots to bring the two closer together and further apart.

when bashir isnt being horny, he's great! he was the character i was most excited to see, weirdly enough, bc im a sucker for a hot man with a british accent and man! bashir! and he's got good potential to be interesting, and i know he will be, even outside of the widely accepted pairing with the cardassian guy (which, thats a lil cringe but in a cute way instead of a bad way, like when hes trying to flirt with dax, bc that shits bad)

and there have been really good episodes so far, i think! Battle Lines is really good, bc it explores aspects of Kira's character and how her religion is important to her, and also Kai Opaka is a really good character. I liked The Nagus as a way to get a bit more into Quark's head and the ways he is similar to and different from his companions and peers. that shits good. I think Progress was really interesting. I also enjoyed If Wishes Were Horses, minus the bit with the two dax's. like yea the scene was funny but i also wanted to smother my boy bashir with a pillow. stop! being! horny! and so on.

idk. i needed to get words out to unpack myself. i wanna give myself the chance to enjoy the show. i already forewarned my friends that i was probably not going to get as far as Voyager (which. well. mixed bag. also theyre the bastards who do the fucking holodeck thing with the village and *smashes the ship* stop that) but i do want to watch ds9. i am excited for it. i just need to get into it.
